The Rogue Element are delivering the goods at the moment. Great stuff.

Product Description
Having delivered three killer singles this year, The Rogue Element is ready to get his first album Rogue Rock out there. As fans of The Rogue will expect, he does not mess about and heads straight for the dance floor jugular. Opening up with the 2 dance floor smashes "Let Me Breathe" and "My Style", Rogue Rock will not disappoint. Littered with stabby synths, deep as you like thundering bass lines and distorted keyboards with a selection of some of the finest new vocalists guesting, we reckon he's onto a winner.

Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

While working on the two "Pirates Of The Carribean" films, Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas. Enter legendary producer Hal Wilner, who brings his knack for matching maverick musicians with extraordinary material. Artists on this double disc set include Bono, Sting, Nick Cave, Bryan Ferry, Lou Reed, Richard Thompson, Lucinda Williams, Jarvis Cocker of Pulp, and many more. "Rogue's Gallery" offers a look at the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Fun--but not great.......2007-07-03

What a concept--a pirate song co-produced by Verbinski and Depp inspired by the "Pirates of the Carribean" series. It should be great and in places, it is. The big question I came away with is--who is Jack Sh**? That one definitely has me guessing.

I won't belabor the song content or the production value. I think the most notable reviews have got that down pat, although I'm not marking down as far as they have because I'm giving points for originality being a fan of Spike Jones and some other truly demented people.

One thing to note: this is not a CD you'd buy if you were looking for something to amuse your kids. Some of the content is very bawdy and Mom and Dad would have some serious 'splaining to do to the little pirates. There's both some language and some situations that are more twisted than a Hangman's knot.

3 out of 5 stars aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhh!.......2007-06-09

Some of the songs are quite good(mellow)others a little odd. Its what I expected, but not what you would expect.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointment would be an understatement.......2007-06-04

It is not unusual to find sea shanties performed by not the greatest musicians or singers in the world. It is not unusual to find shanties sung by people who have difficulty keeping perfect pitch, or tempo. But at least they understand what the music is about, and sing it with heart and enthusiasm and a love for the genre.

Hal Wilner should stick to whatever genre it is that made him know enough to be approached by labels, because he clearly has no understanding, and less enthusiasm for *this* genre.

If you love lively music from the maritime era, you can only be bitterly disappointed by this collection. Out of 43 tracks, I found 15 that were salvageable. Sort of.

I've already tossed this onto the pile to go to the resale shop. It wasn't worthy the cost of shipping.

2 out of 5 stars Zzz..........2007-04-04

I have to admit that I have no idea what kinds of music the pirates sang aboard their ships. I know it probably wasn't "yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me," but I expected something different than this. I think my expectations have been colored by groups like The Pogues, Flogging Molly, The Tossers, and the Real McKenzies. I have an annual Pirate Party and I was hoping to find some good music here to get people in the mood for a treasure hunt or pirate liar's dice, but instead, the music on this CD is something I'd put on if the party went on too long and I wanted to encourage people to leave. Some of it is actually awful and the rest is too slow and plodding to inject much energy into any situation.

I appreciate what was attempted here (contemporary artists paying homage to sea chanteys in the spirit of our romanticized version of the pirate era) but it just doesn't really work. The effect is similar to what would be achieved if the London Philharmonic Orchestra attempted to play rap "music" with Luciano Pavarotti rhymin' while flashing gang signs.

1 out of 5 stars another set of hopes are smashed.......2007-03-29

the selection of titles attracted me. The quality of the arrangements, the voices, and the music---are all quite bad.

It is VERY sad that these same titles, could not have been produced for quality. They sound like a nightmare.

Descend Like Vultures is a fabulous collection of delirious, dizzy alt-pop. At times it reaches the highest acclaim any pleasantly detuned indie-rock can achieve: comparisons to New Zealand indie-rockers from the 1980s. Of course, those bands are fairly obscure these days and this Bay Area bunch may never have heard the Great Unwashed or Tall Dwarfs before. Regardless, they all share an equal love for pure, unbridled pop music and introspective experimentation. Rogue Wave's strummy debut was weighted closer to the pop side, while the new album leans more toward noise in content and pop in context (in the clean sheen of big studio production). In particular, "10:1" marks a new direction, towards a deep immersion in heaviosity. Let's hope the inclusion of "Every Moment" on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack has raised the band's profile to where folks aside from kids who post to indie bulletin boards obsessively will hear this album. Vultures is darker, stranger and better than its predecessor. -Mike McGonigal

Album Description

This is where Rogue Wave, the band, really gets started. As Oakland-based singer/songwriter/arranger Zach Rogue puts it, "this record is the sound of four people's ideas colliding." Descended Like Vultures, Rogue Wave's second full-length for Sub Pop, is a velvety, darkly dichotomous album: pop vs. despair; hope vs. realism. Whereas Rogue's `04 release, Out of the Shadow, was for all intents and purposes a solo project, Descended Like Vultures finds Zach Rogue's unapologetic hooks and soaring melodies built up skyscraper-high by bandmates and mulit-instrumentalists Pat Spurgeon, Gram LeBron and Evan Farrell, who have grown close and road-seasoned thanks to a year of intensive international touring with The Shins, The Helio Sequence, TV on the Radio, and Mates of State. While the new album isn't an overtly political record, (rather, it's more humanitarian) Zach Rogue's impeccable songwriting was heavily informed by what he and his band experienced on the road. On this release, Rogue Wave leaves no stone unturned, no possibility unexplored.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love this CD.......2007-01-20

I stumbled upon "Love's Lost Guarantee" while listening to Pandora and loved that song. I bought this CD and love almost every song. Its California pop music plain and simple. Some great harmonies and nice guitar work. I like "Publish My Love", "Are you on My Side", "Catform" and "You"

The new single "Eyes" is wonderful also, you should definitely download that one off iTunes or buy the CD single.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2006-12-21

This is a flawless pop record on a Pet Sounds scale. I'm just sad this wasn't a part of my collection sooner. Amazing.

5 out of 5 stars Just Getting Better.......2006-05-25

I absolutely adored this CD, mostly because the music is so different and the band seems to have such a creative force in music-making. If I was forced to pick a genre for this release I would say 60s psychedilic influenced new-new wave. Standouts include "Publish My Love" and "California" but any song would honestly give you chills.

Also, if you enjoy this band, be sure to check out thier first CD, "Out of the Shadow" for more of a experimental 60s influenced sound.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2006-05-15

This album is absolutely amazing! I got turned onto Rogue Wave by hearing them on XM radio, and I was instantly hooked. They are totally underplayed. Every song on this album is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars Rogue Wave-descended like vultures.......2006-03-20

Rogue Wave is another addition to the sub-pop records family, with bands like the shins, the constantines, the elected, Damien Jurado, and Postal Service, this seattle based record company has the leading edge of indie bands. Zach Rogue writes almost everything for the cd and it really shows the true sound he wanted to get from this album. "Bird on a wire" has the sound of many Elliot Smith songs, "Publish my love" is a soft resonant song that leaves you still wanting to be convinced as to what he can do while "Love's Lost Gaurantee" and "10:1" broaden the sound to create the two ranges that his music could create to be the two best songs on the album. The next song "California"
is not another beach, summer, song it's totally voices my opinion about that certain state in the first two opening words where he says "screw california". and the next best song that almost ends the cd is "you" which has awesome pausing and echoey guitar where he sings about finding love. Under the Radar magazine gave it Number 5 best cd of 2005 and it could have been higher. So this is the sound I've been waiting to hear and Rogue has definetly has delivered.

Album Description

This quartet effuses vitality, all the while infusing their damaged melodies with casual charm. "Rogue Wave seems like a classic Bay Area band, in the tradition of Thinking Fellers and Barbara Manning--they've just got that vibe"--Carl Newman, The New Pornographers. This debut was originally released in a limited quantity on the band's own label in 2003, and has been re-mastered for this re-release.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Simply a "MUST HAVE"!.......2006-05-17

If you enjoy and appreciate good music buy this CD. Is it like anything else out there today? Maybe. Or maybe not. Bottom line is this: Rogue Wave is great.

3 out of 5 stars I don't see what the big deal is.......2005-06-29

I'm not sure who I'd compare them to in sound..They make pleasant, spare pop songs with just a touch of alt-country at times.

HIGHLIGHTS:
"Postage Stamp World" is one of the rare ones where the hook sticks with you for awhile. It's alt-countryish..maybe a little reminiscent of Wilco. The refrain of "you can all get in line/to lick my behind" is catchy. "Kicking the Heart Out" has a pretty good hook, but I find myself wondering how good it would sound fully produced. A gurgling keyboard underscores the ballad "Endgame" as Zach Rogue croons "nothing else matters". Unfortunately, there's a whole bunch of tacked-on noise at the end...apparently to keep it all "underground" sounding. Bleah.

LOWS:
"Endless Shovel" displays the right SOUND for the band..it's a nifty thickly produced pop gem. But where's the singalong hook? If they can find a way to marry this type of music with the type of craft in the lyric to "Postage Stamp World", they'd be onto something.

BOTTOM LINE:
It sounds like they have the germ of a good power pop band in there if they'd ever decide to thicken up the sound and write a little better hooks. As it is, they're a fairly average band. Pleasant and hummable, but nothing that makes me want to shout their praises. Definitely listen to the samples first before clicking the "BUY THIS" button.

4 out of 5 stars Great Little Indie Band!.......2005-03-23

I loved this disc. Great catchy songs, great harmonies, good vibe through and through. I'm anxious to hear more from these guys. In a day and age when it takes so much for a new album to really keep your interest this is a great one to check out.

4 out of 5 stars Great Debut!.......2005-03-17

Strong points: moody acoustic-inclined pieces like "Postage Stamp World," "Every Moment" (although the sheer acoustic version of this song exists on the Napoleon Dynamite soundtrack)and "Falcon Settles Me" . These tunes are topped with really well penned lyrics; eloquent without becoming esoteric.

Weak points: Rogue Wave's up-tempo songs like "Nourishment Nation" and "Seasick On Land" tend to lose me. I would not say these songs are terrible, but when lined up alongside beautiful tracks like "Every Moment" and "Postage Stamp World," they stick out like a sore thumb. The moody Rogue Wave tunes have great emotion, and are a hard act to follow.

Bottom line? I really enjoy Rogue Wave's first release, and hope they stick around for a long time. If they improve even just a little with each release, I think we're in for some of the greatest albums in a few years. I have little doubt these guys are up for lots of critical acclaim... and I hope the CD buying public follows suit!

4 out of 5 stars Better than the Shins!.......2005-03-06

amazing debut. in my opinion, BETTER than the Shins. saw them live - they revamped songs to be different & JUST AS cool. they also played 4-5 new ones and if your a fan, you wont be disappointed on their next offering.

Absolutely incredible, the best punk cd I've ever heard. I've owned it for 2 years and it still sounds fresh after listening to it almost daily... these songs simply do not get old, they get better - buy this today!!!

4 out of 5 stars incredible, yet in comparison..........2002-03-19

it just sort of pales. that is in contrast to the band's awesome debut lp on new disorder records. i would rank this as one of my all time favorite discs had it not been for owning the self titled one...that one just blows this and 'jagged thoughts' out of the water. the songs here are less varied then on the first, but 'every new morning,' 'rogue's march,' 'got a backbeat,' 'insurrection avenue,' and 'loaded gun' are ones i never tire of. if you've never heard of these guys you're really missing out. i saw them play last week and they were amazing and are also really nice guys and played 'trust' off of the first album for me. thanks!!

5 out of 5 stars How To Compose A Revolution.......2001-11-08

This CD is just great! I love every song on it except There Could Be More. The lyrics could stand on their own in a book of poetry. Truly a CD everyone must own whether they dig punk or not. One of the best voices I've ever heard. If you like this CD you must get the Self-Titled CD, even better lyrics.

"Broken heart and broken spirit. Break the glass till there's no glass left. Baby while you're young, drink until your heart's numb. Look at all the broken folks; wonder if they've ever tried..." - Decycling

5 out of 5 stars Best punk album this year.......2000-10-24

This album is a revelation for at least one reason: We now know that a "punk" band can record a complex, widely appealing, and varied hard rock album without going wimpy on us. Gets better with every listen.

Totally blows the Criminals, Queers, Green Day, etc. out of the water.

5 out of 5 stars the most honest record i've heard in quite sometime.......1999-12-03

there are several things that make american steel special and unique, but the thing about them that strikes me the most is their honesty. their music just seems so honest and from the heart. sadly, punk rock these days seems to be a style of music or a fashion.....luckily, there are bands around like american steel who have punk attitude to go along with punk music. the have an honesty in their sound that i haven't heard in many other bands. however, don't think that the honesty is the only reason that rouge's march is the best punk rock record i've heard in years. american steel has a raw sound that has a pop sensibility without sounding over-practiced, over-polished, and cheesy. also, their sound has evolved nicely since their last record (which is available from new disorder records). if you like op ivy, leatherface, the clash, or hot water music you will love this album. buy it!

5 out of 5 stars punk album of the year.......1999-11-26

5 out of 5 stars man i wish texas was that cool..........2006-07-13

this album is amazing, lucero is amazing, everything lucero has put out is amazing...but unfortunetly they are not from Texas as the other guy said.

4 out of 5 stars Must be the dirty water.......2005-10-17

First of all, Lucero is from Memphis, not Texas as the above review stated. Lucero is an amazing band with a sound comparable to mid-era Replacements mixed with Faithless Street/ Strangers Almanac era Whiskeytown. But there is a certain Blues quality to this Memphis 4-piece that those other bands couldn't quite nail when they tried. Ben Nichols vocals just have a natural heart felt blues edge to it that even tops Westerberg and Adams on poignancy at times if you can believe it. They are a rare blast of heart felt honesty floating around your local bar doing shots on a wednesday night going unnoticed. They are always on tour- I've seen them all over the country the past couple of years. They are amazing live. Highly recommended.

      Album Description

Having delivered three killer singles this year, The Rogue Element is ready to get his first album Rogue Rock out there. As fans of The Rogue will expect, he does not mess about and heads straight for the dance floor jugular. Opening up with the 2 dance floor smashes "Let Me Breathe" and "My Style", Rogue Rock will not disappoint. Littered with stabby synths, deep as you like thundering bass lines and distorted keyboards with a selection of some of the finest new vocalists guesting, we reckon he's onto a winner.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars A Pirate's Life Soundtrack.......2006-12-29

This two-disc set is really quite a great example of pirate songs from the 19th century and more. Some artists are famous, others are not so much. All the songs are good, and the liner notes gives a little background on all the songs, which is nice. As a notice, there are a few very, very, Bawdy songs included, so if thinking of buying this for someone under 18, think again.

Also, Johnny Depp is only a backer, not a singer or contributor, as many were claiming.
      Still excellent though.
