The chances are that if you are reading this you are already familiar with the Cafe del Mar series. Now you are wondering if it is worth spending the $ to further expand your ever-growing collection in this chill-out genre. Well - it is. This is a very good one.

I bought the whole album because I fell in love with the very first song ('Heading for the Sunrise')when I heard it in a Greek beach bar. I simply loved it. Both CDs are great, but the second one I replayed three times in a row. Most of the songs have incredible orchestration and really sweet vocals, the songs are all well sang. Amazingly relaxing album, would definitely recommend.

I disagree with the consensus here.......2007-07-11

I was disappointed by this set and would not recommend it. It's great that all of Brahms' piano works are included here and the boxed set includes some difficult to find works (like those Op. 21 variation sets) as well as the better known and wonderful later piano pieces and the Op. 39 Waltzes.

The problem is that Katchen's performances are flawed and often unpleasant. The worst problem is that he bangs the keys a lot. Fortissimo passages are ideally not supposed to be noisy; they are intended to be loud and forceful without being unpleasant. It's a key distinction that Katchen fails to realize. I also think that Katchen's technique is a bit patchy. He blurs the passagework and there is a lack of both accuracy and delicacy in the fast passages. To take an example, the Op. 76 set is marred by both of these problems: a lack of accuracy and a tendency to bang on the keyboard. I also found many of the passages that didn't suffer from these problems to be interpretationally uninteresting (the slow parts of the Paganini Variations, Bk II are undistinguished, to take an example). Big thumbs down.

I did some direct comparison of sets to the Katchen performances and in every case Katchen was far inferior.

Take the Op. 39 Waltzes: Leon Fleisher's old recording is wonderful and much more sensitive and interesting than Katchen.

I also listened to Radu Lupu's recording of the Opp. 117-119 pieces (THAT is a wonderful recording - if you are looking for a superb recording of Brahms piano music, get that one and save yourself the aggravation of the Katchen set) and it's simply no contest.

I also sampled the terrific Op. 79 Rhapsodies and the Paganini Variations as played by a favorite pianist of mine, the lesser-known French pianist Nicholas Angelich, and Katchen's sloppy and undirected interpretations pales before the versions by a "non-superstar" pianist.

So while I admit I haven't listened to every portion of the Katchen set, I found every reason to avoid it when compared to some alternatives available.

Don't hesitate to get this set.......2007-07-04

It's a good thing I waited to write this until I'd heard these CDs a few times. I would have been guilty of understatement. Katchen's work grows on me in much the same way Brahms' music itself does. It is rich in nuance and insight, and never fails to please.

I'll confess, I bought this set to fill the gaps in my piecemeal collection. What a delightful surprise to find my "stopgap" set more than holds its own against recordings by the likes of Richter, Rubinstein and Gilels. To help the reader overcome any reluctance I offer a few comments on the few "downsides" mentioned by others:

Yes, Katchen does play fast, but not always, and certainly not out of inability to hold the listener's attention through more artful means. Katchen's track times are often slower than Rubinstein's or even Gilels'; but where the spirit moves him, he can go like a rocket. He's generally fastest in the earlier works, where a case can be made for playing them with youthful ardor; Katchen does this to a T. This applies to the first 2 sonatas, the Paganini variations (why would anything associated with Paganini lack splash and dazzle?) and to a much lesser extent, parts of the Handel variations. The main thing is, it works. The very few places where I felt Katchen was rushing the music are heavily outnumbered by places where the added energy seems to "fit" like a glove.

Yes, in an exhaustive set you inevitably endure the "bottom of the barrel." I'm surprised how little of this 6-CD set strikes me as anything less than indispensible. Every track is worth hearing. Katchen has been surpassed here and there, but he doesn't put in a bad performance in the whole batch.

Yes, the recordings are more than 40 years old. They will not satisfy the most jaded audiophile (there's not quite the "presence" of a good recording today). But they are amazingly clean and lifelike for their age (even the 3 tracks that are mono). They sound noticeably better than the popular Rubinstein recordings of equal vintage. At first I thought I heard a touch of bass-heaviness, but now I just think Katchen gives us a strong, clear bass line. Once again, it works. The sound is simply not a problem for a normal listener.

Finally, there's the small stuff. Getting the CDs out of their tight-fitting sleeves without putting your fingerprints on the playing surface is well-nigh impossible, unless you give in and apply a letter opener to solve the problem once and for all. Is that any reason not to get this much wonderful music at such a low price? London has even revived the old practice of offering different program notes in different languages, so that multilingual readers can benefit from more than one set of comments. All around it's a winner!

Superb interpretations by Katchen.......2006-11-16

Katchen's performace throughout this collection are excellent.Brahms integrates many of Schumann's,Bach's and Beethovens compositional ideas into his own works.He is a master of the appoggiatura(suspension of the dominant chord).And the ghosts of Bach,Schumann,and Beethoven appear at intervals throughout this collection of his piano works.The VARIATIONS ON AN ORIGINAL THEME is an ethereal experience,and the Op.09 VARIATIONS ON A THEME BY SCHUMANN, composed after his death,Brahms's pathos,especialy in the slower variations, make you aware of his sadness of Schumann passing, as there is vivid sense of despair and remorse you can hear throughout.It is well documented the profound influence Shumann had on Brahms's compositional process.OP.76 is a passionate performance by Katchen.You also have short piano works culminated in Op116,Op 117,Op.118,which includes the great masterpiece in Ebminor,and Op.119.The Pagganini Variations,Variations on a theme by Haydn,the Ballads Op. 10.And both volumes of the HUNGARIAN DANCES,the 2 Rhapsody's,and VARATIONS ON A THEME BY HANDEL.It quite remarkable that such music could be created by such a young man in the astonishing Sonatas,OP.1,OP.2,and OP.5.The slow movements in all three sonates are very inspiring,and heart fealt.It makes you glad to be alive in order to hear such remarkable music.A well balanced performance throughout.If your a Brahms lover,this is a must for your collection.Enjoy

To be honest, I can't really figure out how much I like Katchen's performance. It's hard to gauge because Brahms's piano music is inherently exceptional played by just about any performer.

I feel that the ballades, op. 10 are played way too fast (although I'm not exactly sure how close Katchen is to Brahms's tempi indications). I've heard them by several other performers and, being a Gould fan, would have to say that his slower interpretation really captures how beautiful the pieces are more than anyone else. I also enjoy Kempff's performances of many later works. Katchen really seems so rushed for some reason. To me, that really takes attention away from the fine details, which I think are so essential to Brahms's piano music. He's not quite delicate enough with some of the pieces.

This faster speed is only very slight for the rest of the set, but pretty consistently. I think he does a better job with more intense pieces like many of his larger-scale variations and the sonatas. Those I would give 5 stars, but only 4 stars for the op. 116-119, for they're a little too fast.

My only other qualm is the arrangement of the set. It would be nice to have all the sonatas together on a disc, 116-119 on a disc, etc., going along with the whole chronological thing..

However, all these things are personal preference. I would definitely recommend this set. It's made up about 1/2 of my music listening for the past couple months. It's not expensive at all for what you're getting, and if you get just one Brahms piano cd, you're going to want to get more, so you should just get it over with and have this whole set, it's fabulous music. Just keep in mind that this is not the only interpretation that should be considered.

Radiant and inspired recordings.......2004-09-19

If there is a more effervescent , idiomatic , innovative and resplendently performance of the Handel Variations , I have not heard it . Katchen emphasizes with colossal scrupulosity the wide doe and the diversity spectre of the orchestral instruments . You must marvel at the technical equipment of Katchen playing .
The other outstanding version of these Variations is of Michael Ponti (live preformance)
gifted with a major emphasis in the striking and color tone ; but the point to remark is that in both performings the approach is similar ; every one of the Variations must be played as a microcosmos in itself ; with nuance , grace , majesty, powerful imagination, sense of the span and above al ; savoir vivre . If you intend to play with authoritative precision without Mediterranean dewy and radiant mood ; you are destined to fail with these Variations and becoming unbearable for the audience and the listener . Lamentably , there are many of them in the actual market but I think you can guess them .
The two Rhapsodies are performed with the highest commitment . Melodic flight and arresting lyricism .
The Sonatas are superbly performed . The Sonata No. 3 may find serious matchers with Clifford Curzon and Paul Badura Skoda .
The intermezzos are depicted with the adequate illuminating . These intimate pages must be played with the perfect balance of light and shadows ; think in Chopin Nocturnes for instance . Only Glenn Gould gets close to him in the Intermezzo Op. 117 No. 2 .
The Ballades may be the weakest works of this fundamental set . Benedetti Michelangeli and Emil Gilels recorded brilliant and eloquent versions.
Finally The Paganini Variations find in Benedetti Michelangeli a serious and unbeatable adversary .
To be honest , this set is widely recommendable for you , to know the whole and intimate world of Johannes Brahms , the beloved son of Hamburg.
Katchen also recorded a powerful Islamey and an unforgettable Rachmaninoff No. 2 .

It's not a bad CD. There are songs that would pair well with Radar Love, My Girl Bill and Rock Me Gently aren't two of them. That said, it's not a bad disc from which to make another. Burned it to my hard drive and made a great CD using this others from the "Have A Nice Day" series. Wish I could afford them all.

You have the great- Golden Earring, Dave Loggins,Maria Muldaur and the good, Jim Stafford, Wet Willie, mixed in with the just awful. Andy Kim would top the awful list with bo donaldson getting 2 turkeys on one disc. Theres a reason we haven't heard further from First class and Billy Swan too. Just like listening to the radio in 1974 I guess- the good the bad and the ugly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

5 Stars Discounting Recording Problems.......2007-05-14

The content is terrific. This CD is one of a series of classical music masters. The only problem is that tracks 38 and later have a lot of distortion/static. I returned thinking it was a problem with the disc, but the replacement disc had the same problem. If not for that, I would have rated 5 stars.

Perfect for homeschooling........2007-01-29

The narratives are short enough to keep your children's attention, the music may be short in some instances but if you're playing it in the background for exposure- it doesn't matter. The price is great and the cheapest you'll find in addition to the 4 for 3 deal. We have all 18 of these cds and don't regret it!

I have found this recording series to be a very helpful introductory teaching device for my young children. It gives a brief history of the composer and samples of the musical style.

The music on this CD is all wonderful, and it's a perfect CD toget - if you have the attention span of a soap bubble! Thisis a "sampler" with narrative and very few of thepieces listed are actually played in their entirety. Even pieces which are short to begin with are excerpted. We are given a whole minute of the Hallelujah Chorus and a rousing 45 seconds from the overture from "Ezio". This is a teaching CD which gives some fine examples to support the narration - but they are very short examples. A few bars here and there is all you get.

Almost ultimate Dark Star, flawed CD release.......2007-03-02

Probably in about 1989 or so, i heard a vinal bootleg called "Cryptic Envelopment" (yes, i know that's not the song's correct name, it was a boot). The Dark Star on that boot blew my mind and i have been looking for a copy of that LP and/or trying to find out what show it was ever since then; that is until sometime in January 2007 when i finally discovered that the show that was edited to fit on 2 lp's of the bootleg was from the very show(s) featured on DP4!! I was so happy.

This Dark Star is simply astonishing. It is so lumbering and otherworldly, i really can't describe it in terms that fit my feeling for it. It seems as if it is some rare beast from some alternate, dusty, psychedelic world parallel to our own. I havent heard more than about 20 or so Dark Star's but I would bet anything that even if i knew them all, this would be amoung the top 5, if not top 2.

UNFORTUNATELY, this is out of print. Used prices quite high. So... again, i am so happy when i discover that the Grateful Dead website has an electronic version (.mp3 or .flac format) of this Dick's Pick for sale. SWEET! ...spend my $20... download my files... burn my CD (and DVD backups!).. I'm all set right? WRONG!!

I AM glad i finally have a 'better' version of my long lost Dark Star, yes. HOWEVER... I will NEVER buy a Dick's Picks again. Why.. why? Because there are numerous dropouts on this recording. No warning, no label, no nothing. By dropout i mean that there are places where the music simply stops and there is dead air where music is missing from the recording. Would it really have been too much trouble for Dick's Picks producers to at least warn about this or better yet... fix the damn recording! Even traded shows on the internet get fixed. My Rhino Filmore East '69 is fixed. Why couldnt they fix this!?

There are no less than 4 dropouts: Disc 1, a) 6 minutes or so in on Dancin' In The Streets; b) Near the end of my lovely Dark Star; Disc 2, c) about 9 minutes or so into The Other One; Disc 3, d) at the very last second or two of Alligator going into Drums. Utter silence... = (

Could anyone confirm that the original DPv4 CD release has these nasty flaws as well? If not, i will be calling the Dead people (hehe) to raise... er, the dead, so to speak; and probably blowing $40 to get a sealed copy. I have to imagine they are on the original discs as well. Too bad. In the end, dropout or not i am very glad to have this.

DPv8 also has a dropout on the even better Dancin' on that release. Which is lame as that is a famous show and these two Dancin' are really the first i have heard that really float my boat.

Anyway, no more... uh.. Pick's, for me. But, i am still glad i have this, it's still worth it, flaws and all.

A Top Ten Dick's Pick.......2006-08-02

It's a shame this is out of print, because it's one of the better Dick's Picks. It's worth tracking down just for the mammoth jams on "That's It For the Other One" and "Turn On Your Lovelight" on disc 2, but it also contains some less typical numbers like "Dire Wolf," "High Time," and "Mason's Children." And, of course, there is the nearly 30-minute "Dark Star," which goes totally off the rails into psychedelia in the second half. Great stuff, worth finding at a record & tape exchange or via trade.

One of the top five Dick's Picks.......2005-12-04

This set is comprised of two shows held on an undoubtedly freezing New York February. And on those wintery nights the Dead played like a ray of Californian sunshine (and sometimes madness) beamed directly into the audiences back brain. Every song is strong starting with a muscular Casey Jones, following that is one of the best versions of Dancing in The Street available commercially. And then there's the Darkstar, holy crap. Incredibly convoluted and dynamic it's got to be heard to be believed. This may be the best version of Darkstar I've ever heard. It's certainly the most melodically adventurous. It segues into a grooving drums which slides right into a powerful careening and dynamic version of The Other One. There's a 30 minute version of Lovelight which is perhaps a bit overlong, but Pigpen is in top form and the jams and playing by the band are excellent. They bring it down, rev it up and bring it down again, improvising with dynamics as well as melody making for an exciting performance. CD3 beginning with Alligator>Drums is excellent as well. Once again Bill and Mickey outdo themselves in the groove department. The other songs are for the most part as powerfully played as on the previous CDs. The one exception is Mason's Children where the energy flags a bit. Most of the live versions of this song suffers the same malady which probably led to the song being excised from the Dead's set soon after. The CD ends with a superbly inventive Feedback followed by We Bid You Goodnight. And what do you know? the Dead almost nail the harmonies perfectly, not something they're know for.

Harmony singing aside, the playing on this CD is some of the best I've heard from the Dead in any year. Jerry Garcia is on fire throughout as is Bob Weir whose solo during China Cat is outstanding. Phil Lesh is an absolute monster as are Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann. Pigpen's vocals are strong and featured to good effect on Lovelight, Alligator and Caution although his organ only occasionaly breaks the surface on other material.

If you like primal Dead, tight playing and hugely inventive jams you owe it to yourself to get Dick's Picks Vol. 4. Phil Lesh has said that New York audiences seemed to expect a little more of the Dead and on these nights in February they got more than they bargained for.

The Most Popular Tape Among Many Heads for Many Years.......2005-10-07

This is sort of thing that created the phenomenon of tape trading among deadheads. I recall lovingly illustrating the case to this one when I was about 15 years old. The old tape that circulated had four songs - Dark Star, Other One, Lovelight, and Bid You Goodnight. There were times when really no other music would do. As I recall, there were some mild tape defects on all the copies of this I ever heard. They, of course, are absent on the cd release.
If it weren't for ipods and dc changers and all the other ways of getting around it, my biggest complaint with this cd release (in all other respects a godsend) is that a more perfect digital form of my old tape couldn't be produced for lack of time.
For those who didn't grow up on this stuff or are just exploring the dead this is the music that makes a deadhead. This tape was in every substantial bootleg Dead tape collection I ever encountered. Of course, the moment for the Dead (and for rock n' roll?) has passed, and things will never be the same without the anticipation of the next show, but still we have (fragments of) the past. And, anyway, no matter whatever else may come along someday, there will only ever be one Good Ole Grateful Dead. This is what they were about.

2/13-14/70 Fillmore East -- from Owsley to us .......2005-06-26

This is an another incredible show captured by the infamous Owsley Stanley. Three months after the amazing 11/8/69 Fillmore (West) show, the first set is more confident -- the WORKINGMAN'S DEAD songs had been played for many nights now. It's surprising how the Dead could turn anything into a cosmic jam -- here they do it with "Dancing in the Streets." The "China Cat/Rider" is not quite as fantastic as the one on DP 16 (see my review), but otherwise this opening is much better.

DISC ONE also includes a fabled 30' "Dark Star," the one with the "Feelin' Groovy" section (taken from the Simon & Garfunkel song). DISC TWO is split 50/50, with a 30' "Other One" and a 30' "Lovelight." This "Other One" is powerful stuff -- for me, the highlight of this pick. "Lovelight" is solid, but what a contrast! Thanks to CD technology, you don't have to listen to them back-to-back unless you really want to. DISC THREE includes a rarity -- a performance of "Mason's Children," a catchy tune that was left off of WORKINGMAN'S DEAD. (I wish I could understand all the lyrics...) Is this the earliest version of "Me & My Uncle"? I'm not sure, but it's interesting to compare to the more hard-hitting and more polished version from 1971 found on SKULL & ROSES. The jam on this disc, starting with "Not Fade Away," including "Mason's Children," and continuing into "Caution" hits another incredible peak -- that's three for this concert, one on each disc! DP 4 is not an entire show, because part of it had already been released by Warners as BEAR'S CHOICE. What a night!

Handel's Greatest Hits.......2007-02-26

I found this recording disappointing in many respects. The sound quality was much lower than expected, especially on track 7 "Largo" which on the origional, Ormandy had created such a quiet grandeur. In trach 11 "Let the Bright Seraphim" Wynton Marsalis overpowered the singing of Edita Gruberova, whereas the music should always be the backup of the singer, and not vice versa. I don't know what happened to the "Hallelujah Chorus," but it didn't come off very well at all.

Nothing else tops this unusually gorgeous rendering. Leppard's is the finest conducting of Handel to this reviewers ears. Especially the Xerxes Largo and the Watermusic
Hornpipes and Fireworks Oveurture tempi, legato and orchestration is full of warmth and energy. A true chiara scuro interpretation. Fabulous!!!!

This collection of George Frideric Handel's "Greatest Hits" leans more heavily towards "The Water Music Suite" than his oratorical work, which is my only serious complaint about this CD as an introduction to the composer's work. Although is does have "See, the Conqu'ring Hero Comes" from Judas Maccabaeus and ends with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir doing the "Hallelujah Chorus," it does not have "For Unto Us a Child is Born" from Messiah, which I consider a glaring omission. The "new" piece for me on this CD that is a nice discovery is "Ode for the Birthday of Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine)," performed by Wynton Marsalis and the English Chamber Orchestra.

Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.

It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.

Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.

Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?

I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!

A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.

Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.

Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Worth twice the asking price just for Nik Kershaw's Wouldn't It Be Good!! Rest of the tracks are "vintage" 80s' also. The whole Just Can't Get Enough series is a must for 80s' music fans. Absolutely no clunkers!!!

While this compilation manages to have unappealing tracks ("Girls", "Free Nelson Mandela"), there are some really nice songs on here. "Hold Me Now" and "Cruel Summer" are really great songs to commute to, and "The Stand" is a powerful and anthemic delight. "Wouldn't It Be Good" is delectable and "Whisper to a Scream" is a rare gem. This is a must buy for anyone wanting an '80s compilation that doesn't contain the usual hackneyed "hitsapalooza". I even liked "Hero Takes a Fall" and I never knew I could like a Bangles song!

Easily the best!.......1999-07-04

Songs like Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't it Be Good" and The Special AKA's "Nelson Mandela" make this easily the best volume in this 15 volume series. Nik Kershaw fans beware: An edited version of "Wouldn't it Be Good" appears here.

Great music given it's due........2005-04-04

In the late quartets Beethoven continued to evolve many of his compositional techniques: he manages to add to the harmonic rules of before and does new things in the way of tonality and form. These quartets have a sound world all of their own, and create a small-scale effect quite different from the massive-sounding works that came before, such as the "Hammerklavier" sonata and the 9th Symphony. It would be fair to say that no other artist has ever mangaged to reach such spiritual heights. The Quartetto Italiano give superbly polished performances which are able to express the refined tones of these works. Compare their well-rehearsed renditions that come close to perfection with the more ruffled recordings of the Vegh Quartet, for example, and one really appreciates the way in which they are able to sustain the superhuman requirements of these pieces. With the Vegh team we hear 4 human beings, with these recordings we hear Beethoven's unique vision.

The Best.......2003-08-09

This may very well be the best recording of the late quartets I've ever heard. The highlight, of course, is the massive Grosse Fuge, which is the most far-sighted piece of music ever written. In it, Beethoven predicted trends of early 20th century music. Stravinsky said that it sounded modern to his ears. This performance is exceptional in that it brings out the revolutionary quality of the music without ever sounding like an exercise in 20th century performance. Instead, the dissonances and syncopation are emphasized in a manner that elicits the most emotional and technically perfect performance imaginable. And of course, the other quartets aren't just fillers. No way. The playing on these masterpieces is just as incredible as it is in the Fuge. The incredible detail and perfection demanded by Beethoven is difficult to meet, but the Quarteto Italiano manage to step up to the challenge and surpass anybody's expectations. This is a recording to grab and hold onto forever. It's just exceptional!
