A collection of well-known pop tunes, this record documents those ubiquitous tracks that have been played into the ground at nearly every sports facility in the country. Most, like "Whoomp! There It Is" and "Hip Hop Hooray," are undeniably catchy, and other tracks were downright splendid when they first appeared on the scene. Some even credit "Pump Up the Volume" with being a breakthrough for the electronic music scene of the late '80s and early '90s. Still, bringing musical innovation to light is not what the makers of this recording had in mind. It's all about the trashy glitz, fleeting glories, and mindless greed of late-20-century American sports. Revel in its dubious charms, and risk having your brains turn to mush while a permanent grin takes over your face. --Matthew Cooke

A trip back..........2007-05-05
I first heard this mix only very recently, in a long cab ride, and begged begged the driver to let me buy the disc from him. He refused, but let my friend run into his apartment and upload it into his iTunes. I have since bought the disc, and love it soooo much. It's upbeat, loads of fun, yes, great for cleaning the house to. But really, it brings me back to the days of middle school, going to school dances and buying cassette singles with my friends on the weekends...just being care-free and being a kid. I had been feeling nostalgic for those days lately and this disc captures my youth perfectly!
Great for Fitness Classes.......2007-01-26
I'm a PE teacher and my students LOVED doing circuit training to this CD. Every song is super upbeat. It really helped get my classes motivated. I wouldn't buy this CD for general listening music but for fitness it's definitely my favorite.
Have some respect........2006-08-07
This is not music. Have some respect. If you like this you are probably an idiot jock who thinks the middle east is somewhere near Kansas. Please America, wake up.
Whooooooooooomp! Here's the review!.......2005-12-20
Tell-Tale Bonanza's back again!! I'm a total jock if you already didn't know, my resume speaks for itself. This cd is not only great for sporting events, but works well at any social gathering. There's just something that is beautiful about seeing Lupus Fury do the tootsie roll. Let me tell you a little bit about Lupus Fury. You may be wondering how he got such a nick-name, well let me break it down for you... Lupus- is latin for "Wolf" and we all know that he's hairy like a wolf, and stinks like the Cumberland river. Fury- anger, violence, rage. that sums him up right there, the man has 8 restraining orders, and is a registered sex offender (we still laugh about that to this day) So now we know Lupus, a hairy wolf like angered man, don't get near him during a full moon either, he might hump your leg, but he gets more action than teen wolf (thanks to me). Our parties are just a big spectacle, we really do put on a show. When the song "You're Unbelievable oh!!!" comes on,Big Frank will put on a gymnastic routine that will leave you wondering why he wasn't on the olympic squad in 96 (steroids). Chubby Lou is in charge of running the party (there's never a shortage of cheap booze and hot pockets) and doubles as the bouncer, you don't wanna catch one of his famous DDT's, little-known fact, Chubby Lou used to be an amature wrestler (they said he was too fat) and had a stint as Barry Horrowitz tag team partner in 88. Cheese Grits doesn't really have any talent, we just thought he had a cool name so we let him in the clique, but he can juggle, so we get him tanked up and make him juggle by the end of the cd we circle around him and sing along to gary glitters "duh nuh nuh nuh nuh HEY!!! duh nuh nuh nuh!!!!" and so on, he has a look of terror on his face, but it's totally worth it. by that time we settle in, and there's about a 10-3 girl to guy ratio, some of us score real big, whoever is lucky enough to make it to my room, gets to personally here "Gonna make you sweat" by C & C Music Factory. Now that you see the power that this cd holds, I hope you would go and buy it (or steal it from your P.E. teacher, like I did).
Fun for the gym.......2005-08-29
Jock James is a great fun CD, no seriously well written music but come on it has at least three songs with the word PUMP in them. What a fun album!

For better or worse, when then-journeyman actor-writer Sylvester Stallone created the character of punchy pugilist Rocky Balboa, he did more than offer all the ne'er-do-wells in the world the hope of someday being a contender; he created a cinematic sensibility--perverse optimism in the face of insane odds--that's infected Hollywood films ever since. And if Bill Conti's horn-fanfare theme has become an instantly evocative cliché, it's only because it fit the proceedings so damned well, like a clenched fist in a boxing glove--or a slice of Velveeta on a Ritz cracker. Conti may be no Morricone, but then, when was the last time you heard the theme to Cinema Paradiso played at a wrestling match? --Jerry McCulley

Wonderful!.......2007-04-12
This is a wonderful score. Distinctive, passionate, corny in all the right ways, and downright moving. If you have ever seen the film, or want to buy some really motivating music, Rocky is the way to go. You can just picture the sweat, the blood, the tears... you get the picture.
Overal I highly reccomend this as a significant benefit to anyones CD collection.
Simply the Best - Brilliant!.......2007-01-06
The movie "Rocky" was released in 1976. It was a major hit, and won the Academy Award for Best Movie. One of the major reasons for for the success of Rocky, is the brilliant musical score by Bill Conti. Conti was nominated for best Musical Score, and Best Song (Gonna Fly Now).
When people think of "Rocky", they think of Sylvester Stallone and the trumpets introducing the classic hit, "Gonna Fly Now". The music brings soul and heart to the movie. Without the music, Rocky is still a good picture, but with the music, Rocky is a great movie! The music of Bill Conti energizes this movie and brands it with a unique persona and character. In a word - Billiant!
There is not a weak track on the entire album. "Gonna Fly Now" became a #1 top-40 hit in 1976, and has inspired countless millions with its upbeat thrilling souhd. But it does not end there. "Going the Distance" is another solid composition that grabs your soul with its gritty determination and tension. "First Date" and "You Take My Heart Away" show the tender side of the Rocky soundtrack, being the love themes of the Rocky movie.
In the top-20 of all-time musical scores, this has to rank solidly in this group. It is music that stands the test of time. I still listen to the album 30 years after its release, and find great enjoyment in it. I treasure it, and it occupies a special place in my music collection.
Buy it to inspire you, buy it as music to exercise to, buy it to remember the movie - just buy it. You will love this album, guaranteed.
Thank you Bill Conti for creating a masterpiece.

Music with Heart!.......2006-09-02
Rocky - The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - is a fantastic musical adventure with all the music of the film included on this stunning cd!
--->(WARNING, the explanation of the songs include SPOILERS of the movie!!)
<---
1. Gonna Fly Now - A reason to buy the soundtrack starts with this heartbeating music. The well known theme of all the Rocky movies, simply fantastic music. Includes singing which power it up even more. After this song, you're sold. Length: (2:48)
2.Philadelphia Morning - After agreeing with Mick to manage Rocky, Rocky trains for the first time and gets up at 4 o'clock in the morning. The training goes harder than he expected, and that is heard in the music. The music really descripes a dark cold winter morning in Phiadelphia, which is absolutely fantastic. You can truely feel how Rocky felt in that moment through the music. He felt like: My mind wants to, but my body can't. Length: (2:21)
3. Going the Distance - The true opposite of track 2. Rocky is now full of life and spirit, ready to do it, to go that distace (15 complete rounds in the boxing ring with the heavywait champion of the world)The music on this track is also used during the Battlescenes in the movie. Rocky gets hit and falls down to the floor, struggling to get up again, while Adrian, his true love, walks in and sees him get up and keep going! Length: (2:39)
4. Reflections - Rocky comes into his appartment after a fight. Looking in the mirror and at an old photograph of himself he feels regret. Again, the music goes deep into Rocky's mind, feeling that frustration of a struggling mind. This track which also appears in "Rocky II", is not on the Rocky II soundtrack, but it is on this one. So if you are looking for that track music, it is right here. Length: (3:18)
5. Marines' Hymn/Yankee Doodle - Rocky is waiting in the ring for the champion to show himself. And there he comes, Apollo Creed, dressed as President George Washington. The crowd goes wild and the commentators have the time of their life explaing to listeners and viewers what is there to see.
The music really gives that feeling. Length: (1:44)
6. Take it Back (Street Corner Song from "Rocky") - The song which is sung by Sylvester Stallone's brother Frank Stallone, who is a streetcornor singer in the movie. A simple but fantastic song which captures the positive feeling on the streets of Philadelphia. Length: (1:47)
7. First Date - This is basically the Love theme from the Rocky movies. The music really captures the love and heart of the Rocky movies, the emotion. Truely fantastic music that captures your heart and shows Rocky's love for Adrain. And her's for him.
Length: (1:52)
8. You take my Heart away - Another song, which is played on the radio when Adrian and Rocky kiss for the first time in his appartment. A true seventies song sung by DeEtta Little and Nelson Pigford. A powerfull love song. Length: (4:44)
9. Fanfare for Rocky - Contains the music which is played at the very start of the movie, when the title "Rocky" floats over the screen from right to left. After that piece, the music goes over to a bit of a mix of different themes in the Rocky music. You can here a bit of "Going the Distance" in it. After that you hear music which isn't heard in the movie. Trumpets making a kind of dual. Fantastic to listen to. Length: (2:33)
10. Butkus - Rocky's dog is in the picture. Adrain has surprised Rocky with the beloved dog. Now Rocky has, like Adrain says in the movie: "Somebody to keep you compangy when you run." The spirits of Rocky are now high up by the compangy of Butkus and he feels great. You can hear that in the music. And you feel the happiness of the dog too. Only about twenty seconds of this music is used in the film. Length: (2:10)
11. Alone in the Ring - Rocky is not so sure anymore if he can go that distance and the night before the fight he goes to the empty stadium. Affraid he might lose and becomes the bum he was before it all again. The music shows Rocky's doubts.
Length: (1:08)
12. The final Bell - Music that starts softly (In the movie it's heard when Rocky leaves Adrian in the dressingroom, saying: "Don't leave town") After that, the music explodes: Rocky has gone the distance. Now, reporters are crowding him, people are yelling, screaming. Rocky yells for his girlfriend Adrain, who is struggling to get up to the ring.
Then they meet and "I love you" is said to each other and the music is buidling up to this absolute maximum. Length: (1:54)
13. Rocky's Reward - This music is heard at the end credits of the movie. Rocky's Reward is sweeping, beautiful music that shows the feeling of sadisfaction and love. Fantastic music. And gives a bit of "Going the distance" only with higher notes.
Length: (2:03)
So bassically the Rocky Original Motion Picture Soundtrack is a journey through the soul, the mind of a human being that has a maqnificent journey with love, pain, struggles, happiness and fear. And the music guides you through that soul.
A fatastic musical experience that gives the feeling of a human spirit coming to life!
Heartfelt music.......2006-04-23
Touching music from the late 70's that complements the soulfull story of a working-class, American hero. The struggles Rocky faced in his simple, humble life are beautifully captured in this score.
Better than the movie.......2006-03-29
As good as Rocky the movie is, it would not be as memorable without the music. The Rocky score has become instantly recognizable and delivers a powerful jolt that will give you goosebumps. I believe that Rocky is a very good movie, but the score is even better.

It's simple: in his various realizations of the piano music of Erik Satie, Aldo Ciccolini set a standard that has yet to be bettered. This compilation, drawn from recordings made between 1966 and 1971, is consequently the best of the best. Ciccolini always played Satie's music as though it had been written by Claude Debussy, not by some cheap charlatan or uneducated primitive (which, to an extent that is still debatable, Satie was). The result is that these seemingly simple piano pieces acquire a tonal allure that is as surprising as it is undeniable. They possess an understated sophistication that points directly toward Ravel and Poulenc, at the same time providing an opening to the minimalist aesthetic of the later 20th century. Ciccolini's playing is pliant and graceful, and under his fingers the music seems to breathe and come alive. What more could a composer or a listener want? --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Picasso in sound.......2006-02-19
Pablo Picasso, Jean Cocteau and Eric Satie were drinking buddies; it shouldn't be surprising that their work, though in different media, should bear striking similarities. This CD set replaces a very badly abused vinyl recording from the 1960s. No one plays Satie like Aldo Ciccolini. I do wish the Parade had been included, Satie wrote the music, Cocteau the libretto and Picasso did the sets and costumes-Satie's only ballet. Of course, the circa 1910 audience walked out. It's the story of an out-of-work ballet company that goes out onto the streets of Paris to try to get customers to come inside. The customers are stereotypes like the American in a cowboy outfit who adds the sound of this six gun to the music and the secretary who types through the encounter. The back wall of the theater was covered with Picasso designed neon signs flashing in bright colors throughout the performance. Across the front of the stage he'd strung acetate on which were playing street scenes of Paris from three cameras-red, blue and green. The men were way, way ahead of their times.
Great but NOT complete.......2004-12-23
Please note that this collection does NOT contain Erik Satie's complete works for piano. The collection makes no such claim, but at 5 CDs, some may assume it to be complete and none of the other reviews to date mention this. I am too lazy to do the research to come up with a complete list, but offhand I know that these songs are missing - "Je Te Veux", "Fantaisie-Valse" and "Valse-Ballet". These 3 are among my favorite Satie pieces, so yes, I think the collection is diminished somewhat by their absence.
Aldo Ciccolini always has been the greatest interpreter of Satie's work for piano. Ciccolini has a feel for Satie that no one else does, although I have to admit that I prefer a faster tempo to "Poudre D'Or" than the slower, introspective tempo Ciccolini always uses, but that's only a small matter of personal preference. These recordings were originally made in 1967 and 1971 and the sound quality is excellent. At the dawn of the CD era at various sessions from 1983-1986, Ciccolini recorded Satie's complete works for piano on EMI on 5 CDs. They are currently out of print in America, with the exception of one compilation CD (also available at Amazon at the time of writing) with Gabriel Tacchino playing the 2nd piano on the pieces for 2 pianos. Ciccolini was overdubbed playing the 2nd piano on the original recordings in this review. I have a slight preference for the later recordings, but many seem to prefer these originals. You can't go wrong with these, just understand that they are not complete and the missing songs are among Satie's best.
There's only one........2004-06-26
If you're reading this, you've already heard Satie's music, so I needn't to go into that. I do want to say that this is the only recording of Satie that is worth hearing. Ciccolini is the only foot that will fit the Satie glass slipper. Don't waste your money on the ugly step-sisters.
Don't forget Satie was an Anti-Romantic.......2002-02-25
No one could deny that setting every disperse music in a unique album is a remarkable job. But I didn't like much the approach of Ciccolini, which I knew around 1975 while getting borrowed the vinyl LPs in the Embassy of France in Buenos Aires. Now I'd like to explain to whom it may concern why do I feel that way.
Satie was an anti-romantic composer, at the point of creating the "furniture-music" (musique d'ameublement) which refuses that music could be so expressive as romantics wanted. Other ones clasifies him as a "Surrealist" composer (anti-romantic movement too), but there are no signs of dreams of unconsciousness through his work. Since that point of view you could play Satie's music anyway but expressively. Satie wasn't Debussy, besides the fact that they knew personally and admire each other. Could you play Debussy in a plain style without damage?. I don't think so, because Satie was farther of expressive tradition than Debussy: we can say that Debussy is a spirit of the XIX Century while Satie is a precursor of the XXth. Remember his own words: "I came to the world too young in a time too old".
The best performance I heard of the piano work of our composer was in charge of Jacques Fevrier on the excelent album called "Monsieur Erik Satie", with such a "sideman" as another member of the group of six as Georges Auric for the 4 hands pieces.
I wave goodbye with a great embrace to all Satie's fans.
"Electric Spirit of Eric Satie" fans this is the one !.......2001-08-17
Fans of "The Electronic Spirit of Eric Satie" will immediately recognize Aldo Ciccolini as one of the few musicians in touch with the true "Satie" style. The selections correspond to "Electric Spirit" ; except, performed as a good piano solo. The piano recording is done so well it's better than most orchestral versions. It sounds very much like "Electric Spirit" without orchestration nor electronic "boops" and "beeps"-- just a good piano. It's really just as funny and powerful; and here it has a class act. This performance is a rare find !

A Grammy-winner!.......2007-07-10
SPORTS is Huey Lewis & The News' third overall album but their first Grammy-winner. On this CD you get the original 9-track line-up plus one demo version of THE HEART OF ROCK 'N ROLL and live versions of four other tracks. In addition to THORNR,hits from this original late 1983 or early '84 release include HEART AND SOUL,BAD IS BAD,I WANT A NEW DRUG,WALKING ON A THIN LINE and IF THIS IS IT. "Weird Al" Yankovic recycled the music of IWAND for his parody entitled I WANT A NEW DUCK for his '85 album DARE TO BE STUPID. Ray Parker Jr. sued Lewis because Parker believed Lewis used pieces of music from Parker's song GHOSTBUSTERS for IWAND. Parker and Lewis agreed to not let their settlement leak at all. Later,Parker inadvertently broke the promise and Lewis sued Parker! The rest is history. HL&TN's frequent hit-making continued with 1986's FORE! which won a multitude of Grammys as well. By the time SMALL WORLD was released in 1988,that album failed to garner any Grammys like its last two predecessors did.
A True Classic from the '80s!.......2007-07-03
This is one of the best albums ever recorded! It's addictive, fun, and one of my all time favorites. This is fantastic music that I just can't get enough of. The songs are incredible from start to finish and all have such a pleasent appeal to the listener. I would highly recommend this to any serious music fan. Why can't music be the way it was back then? You know, good. Most of todays music isn't worth a nickel and that's simply putting it in it's place. There is still some good music out there but it's hard to find. As for the rest of it, rap, most of the pop, and most of the alternitive rock just doesn't have it. On the other hand, I would perfer alternitive rock and pop over rap any day! Some of the alternitive rock is good but unfortunatly, as I said earlier, is hard to find. Of course this is simply my own opinions, but Huey Lewis and the News' "Sports" is true rock n' roll. Even "Honky Tonk Blues" is decent on this album and that's a Hank Williams cover.
More fun than....well....it's just plain fun!.......2007-03-25
Okay, so the songs are simple and nothing breaks new ground. But the one thing about this group is the immense amount of fun they are clearly having making music. "Sports" is a diverse collection of trendy songs and faithful tributes. Here's a song by song snapshot:
The Heart of Rock and Roll - a fun, poppy, hook-laden tribute to the history of rock music and a celebration of what's yet to come. Those horns make the song soar at the end.
Heart and Soul - their first top 10 hit and a great pop song finished off with some cool power chords.
Bad Is Bad - I used to hate this song, but time has made me come to love the wonderful bluesy vocal harmonies and the controlled playing. This is where you find just how tight a band they are.
I Want A New Drug - One of the coolest News songs; the lyrics are terrific and the band plays it into the stratosphere, with horns making the song fly once again.
Walking On A Thin Line - My personal favorite News song. Kind of autobiographical, but the tight playing - particularly in the chorus - makes this song special and timeless.
Finally Found A Home - Another great, but forgotten song; it's almost the band's lyrical response to the struggles expressed in Walking On A Thin Line. Those who don't know the News beyond their bounty of hits need to hear this song to really appreicate them.
If This Is It - A poppy breakup song - to me it's the weakest offering on the album, but when Huey wails "If this is it, please let me know", you actually buy it. So it's still okay.
You Crack Me Up - yeah, it's simple and says nothing new. And they sound like they're having so much fun, you'll wish you were right there in the studio when they recorded it.
Honky Tonk Blues - only years later did I realize how big a deal it is - a so-called 80's pop band covering Hank Williams, not just covering it, but capturing all the passion of the song.
Music is blessed with diverse artists. Some are there to challenge our thought process, and that's where Dylan came in. Some are there to set new trends - enter the Beatles. Some are there to lend the music to a rebellious generation - thank you Stones! Some made sonic exploration the playground, like Pink Floyd. And some blended wild amounts of style into new sounds, like Led Zeppelin. But sometimes, we dismiss those artists that just want to bring music to its simplest level and just make it fun and entertainment. And nobody since the mid sixties did it any better than the News did on this album. The best way to enjoy this album is to invite all your friends over, crack open a cold one, turn it up loud and par-tay!
Huey's best.......2007-01-24
Just what I expected-if you like Huey Lewis, this is the cd to have.

My son loves This Cd And so do I think the music is so excellent.
Not Original Artists.......2000-05-30
This CD does not have the original artists performing the songs, which is all that really needs to be said about this CD. I normally would have listened to cuts from the CD, but I don't have a sound card at work and made the mistake of ordering it without listening to it. Still, you shouldn't have to read between the lines in the description to find out if a CD with popular songs are being sung the way you like to hear it.

Good for basketball warm-ups.......2006-02-25
Contains some great tunes to get the blood pumpin'. A couple of the songs contain lyrics that may not be appropriate for young kids.
OH THE NOSTALGIA!.......2005-06-29
Back in like the mid 90s I lived in Oahu, Hawaii. In those days everything you hear on this disc was played all the time on the radio (Xtreme Radio 104.3!!!). These were the glory-days of dance music, when the masses finally started to appreciate it in America (I think), myself included. I would hear this all the time on the radio at home, and that right there molded my tastes for music for the rest of my life. It was upbeat, it was smooth, it wasn't conscious of itself like that hideous rock music, and it had only one purpose: to get you moving on the dance floor! It's been many years since I heard these songs, and I tried to find them to return to those great days for dance music. I've finally found the disc! THIS is the perfect CD for working out, driving your car, or just plain getting excited and crazy! I LOVE this CD! :P
Jam On.......2005-02-04
This mix album is one of the best ever made. This album can be used to workout to or to play for sports teams during warm-ups. With 21 rhythm packed tracks you won't be disappointed. From classics like "We will rock you" and "Macho Man" to newer songs like "1, 2, 3, 4" this album is for you.
jock jams vol.2.......2000-02-28
This is a nice mix of 1996 music. It is upbeat, and a great cd for working out.
jock jams 2 review.......2000-02-23
The Jock Jams number two could have had a mega mix because of the Jock Rock one,Slam Jams one,and Jock Jams one. And,the mega mix could have still been really good. That's why I gave it four stars.

Any record that leads off with Dick Vitale's ubiquitous jabberings is asking for trouble, and this third volume in the Jock Jams series is musically ill-equipped to pull out of the ensuing tailspin. The collection of inoffensive rap songs and R&B-tinged dance numbers does have a few highlights. KC and the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way I Like It," regardless of what sort of material it shares company with here, is a classic, and Blackstreet kick out a decent rhyme with Dr. Dre on "No Diggity." On the whole, it might even make a passable soundtrack for an aerobics class. Besides that, however, you'll have to swim through a lot of musical filler and testosterone-driven flotsam to find anything that rises above an overwhelming and acute mediocrity. --Matthew Cooke
Customer Reviews:
Jock Jams.......2007-02-04
Anyone who pays full price for this is gonna be pissed. Name one Jock who listens to this crap. I just can't imagine professional athletes listening to Da' Dip on their way to a game. I think these CD's should not be taken seriously because they are way too funny to be for real.
great.......2005-10-17
I love this CD, i work the score board at my brothers hockey games and i plan to use these song during the warm-ups.
Non-Stop Fun!.......2001-04-14
Jock Jams Volume 3 is quite possibly the best in the series. It stars off with Dick Vitale's It's Awesome Baby speech, which kicks right into Tribal Dance by 2Unlimited (Remember them?) which is full of energy. Right after that is Republica's super hit Ready To Go and Tito Nieves's I Like It Like That, which is definately a classic. Quad City DJs have made it on to most dance compilations, and this one is no exception. C'Mon Ride The Train is one of the best songs on the album. Freak Nasty provides a pretty good track that is a combination of dance and rap. Crush provides yet another dance classic with Jellyhead, and then Blackstreet gives us their hit No Diggity with Dr. Dre. The next few tracks however are nothing exceptional until you hit Livin' Joys song Don't Stop Moving, which is as close to perfect as you can get. Then Rednex performs a strange combination of country and dance on Cotton Eye Joe, followed by a great Jock Jam megamix, which features many other popular songs at that time which didn't make the compilation. The album ends with Ray Castoldi's chicken dance. Overall, this is a very fun album that works well for parties.
Wham! Bam! Slam! It's Awesome, Baby!.......2000-08-02
Jock Jams Volume 3 is one good album. It will definately get you pumped up.
Every song on this album gets my blood pumping. Hearing Dick Vitale first just set me up for the rest of this fast cd. "C'mon & Ride It," "I Like It Like That," and "That's the Way I Like It" are probably the three most well-known singles, but other great songs like "Da' Dip" and the thunderous "Tribal Dance" make this album super.
This album has something for everybody on it. Ending with "The Chicken Dance" was classic. This album is a great buy with 22 tracks on it, and it more than satisfies you with fast pumping entertainment. What are you waiting for? "Don't Stop, Get It, Get It!"
It REALLY gets on your nerves!.......2000-02-27
My sister got this cd and she plays it all the time. It gets soooo annoying. I was sick of it the second time I heard it. The only reason I even gave it 2 stars is because it is good to make up gymnastics routines to. But other than that it is a TOTAL waste of money!

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10
Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.
The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).
This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.
I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.
a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15
I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.
Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Overdubs ruin good music..........2007-02-01
The songs selected for this collection are great, rousing classics, but the producers of the CD series decided to overdub stadium crowd noise over most of the songs, completely ruining the original songs!!! Don't buy this if you want the pure songs in their original state...
Classic Stadium Sounds.......2007-01-05
Jock Rock is a must for anyone in the fitness business. Nothing gets a crowd hopping like a little James Brown! Not much for listening to, but a good collection when your looking for just the right song to play for a certain event.
Upbeat.......2004-09-27
Vol 1 and the other CDs in this series are all time favorite, sing along, party songs. If you plan on dancing this is not the CD to buy. If you plan on just hanging out with friends then you are buying the right CD.
Stupid CD Great Seller.......2003-10-21
I bought this CD because I needed a few songs on it, but over all it is silly and stupid. But the Seller was wonderful. The package was proper and secured the CD and the service was fast.

Sports Explosion.......2005-12-13
Sports Explosion has a driving high energy beat songs include; Come Baby Come; Get Ready for This; I Like to Move It; Mony Mony; Dance to the Music, The Twilight Zone, The Power, Na Na Hey Hey, and More... DJ's Choice does a fine job mixing Sports Explosion and it sounds great with a sub and fine for sports of all kinds including dance.
Not really an explosion.......2005-06-11
I like my sports. Everyday I look at the box scores, check my fantasy sports teams, read Bill Simmons' column on ESPN, use my football phone(free with my SI subscription) to call my friends and I even play catcher in slow pitch softball. With that background, if anyone is going to know a sports explosion, it's probably going to be me. I would probably rate this compilation of songs a sports campfire. The irony of putting a song by the village people on a sports cd almost worth giving this thing 5 stars.
How do I know all of these songs you ask? I attend many sporting events and also run the DJ booth at the softball complex when my team isn't playing. I tend to run a little hot up in the booth like Maverick and have even been called dangerous, but if you want to whip fans into a frenzy at a slow pitch church league softball game, I'm the best option you have. I go with some of these songs as you can't go wrong with "I like to move it" and "Twilight zone" even though the version of twilight zone on this thing is different than the golden earring version I play. I tend to start the crowd off slow with something like "Dancing with Tears in my eyes" by Ultravox in the first couple innings. I then throw on a mix of Hasselhoff, Musical Youth and Catherine Wheel in the middle innings. Nothing throws gets the crowd more pumped up than "Black Metallic", you should try it. Actually, you should read my reviews and emulate what I do to the best of your ability. Things will improve for you in many areas. The late innings are where I tend to rile things up with the standards like "Rock n' Roll part 2", "Footloose" and "Sister Christian". I usually close with "Goodbye" by Hootie and the Blowfish after the game finishes. The umps kind of get mad because the crowd chants for me to keep playing songs like I'm turning out one of my wedding receptions, but I always get on the loudspeaker and say that although I appreciate their worship, the next game needs to start. All in all, I make the ballpark fun for the whole family. This CD isn't a bad one for your collection, but don't just rely on it alone with no backup.
Great CD.......2003-06-15
This is a great CD expect the YMCA song. The YMCA recording on this CD is really chesse sounding.
