I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Consider this: six immensely talented musicians including a guitarist who is a masterful cellist, an insanely good drummer who is a piano prodigy, a violin player who plays baritone saxophone & harmonica, a trumpet player with the range of big sky country, a reed man with the modern sensibilities of a John Ellis and the historical perspective of Roland Kirk, and a bass player,, who, besides his obvious skills on the low end axes of his choice, instills the group with a very special sense of harmony. Having been together for three years, they have their first studio album and a live CD now behind them. Their sense of humor firmly in place, they'll play you for a sucker and slam dunk you with the most serious and ber tight music, all in one song. With a live show that will leave you exhausted and begging for more, it is immensely gratifying on both a musical and personal level. Here lie the traists of a great collective. Their endurance will come from the fact that no matter what massive musical chops they may have, they retain a certain humility that will inevitably generate good will and great music. That is what will keep this opera in production for many years to come.

      I don't know much about Ed Flis, but I heard a track from this album on Seeds of Chaos (RIP) in LA. It always finds its way back into my stereo. Sneaky little bastard! It's super cool 100% from beginning to end.

As Eric Winzenried explains in "Punchline", he knows the deck is stacked in life's favor, but as an artist he's gonna resist becoming its punk.

        Stepping way beyond the trite images of a one genre artist, Eric's music is an eclectic blend of pop/rock with elements of hip hop to alternative. His debut album, "Hooray", captures the diversity of his musical influences from the humor and sarcasm of The Kinks and The Replacements to the lyrical flow of Sublime and A Tribe Called Quest as well as the unpredictability of David Bowie. The signature songs "Ohio" and "Smarter One" best showcase this unique blend of musical styles.

        His debut album highlights his unique comical insights into life's absurdities. He takes situations, from the truly tragic to the simply inconvenient, and breaks them down to what's really worth crying over. In "Therapy", Eric tells the charming love story of a crystal meth smoking ex-girlfriend while in "Punchline", Eric makes light of his ex wife's painful marital infidelity by contrasting it with the even greater tragedy of the death of his sister . In the featured song, "You Can't Stay at My Apartment", he documents the sufferings we have all endured of the psycho uninvited house guest who never leaves and questions our inability to stand up for ourselves.

        While Eric Winzenried's songs contain self deprecating humor, sarcasm, and their not so distant cousin, anger, they all share the same message: if you are able to laugh at the humorous fragile nature of life, you'll stop viewing yourself as a victim and take back the controls.
