Many of these performances are new to me. That is the beauty of being 59 years old and still learning. My knowledge of classical music is based on what moves me. While others talk about all the other versions and other conductors, I just want to let other people know that these recordings give me great pleasure. While some may find Michel Beroff to be less than adequate, I enjoy his renditions of the piano concertos. I have heard other renditions and find that they all have their places. These concertos move me a great deal. That is my only criteria.

Before he became the embattled leader of the New York Philharmonic, Kurt Masur made a name for himself by making brilliant recordings with the Gewandhaus-Orchester Leipzig, these Liszt Orchestral Works foremost among them. It is delightful to have these recordings in print again, and for them all to be collected on seven discs in an inch-thick paper box set is even better. Masur's performances of the "Tone Poems" in particular rank among the best of all-time, along with Haitink and Golovanov in my opinion (see my review of the latter on his "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" title). Also included in this set are the works for Piano and Orchestra, and while Michel Beroff's renditions don't quite measure up to my favorite accounts by Arrau, Cliburn, Janis, Katchen, Richter or Zimerman, they are certainly first-rate. Oddly, my only complaint is that EMI seems to have taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" box are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves.

it's great! Why aren't there reviews for this? The first piece is freakin' amazing! Melodic, easy for the listener to follow, good recording, well played, what's not to love? An underrated piece of music and an inexpensive cd.

    Leslie Howard--What would we do without him??? He's a music giant! He serves us both as a musician and a Liszt-historian, tracking down some long-lost scores of Liszt's music and bringing them to life and to the public for the first time, in some cases since the debut of the works' performance, in some cases the first time ever.
    This, plus Vol. 2 of this series-within-a-series is some of the greatest music ever written combining the forces of a piano virtuoso with a symphony orchestra (Right up there with Chopin, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov), and not only top-notch performances of the classic Concerto #1 (#2 is on Vol 2) and the Totentanz, there's also the beautiful Fantasy on Berlioz's Lelio, the long-abandoned Concerto in E-Flat (believed to be #3 for many years), a Concerto arranged for strings-only with piano, a Fantasy on Beethoven's "Ruins of Athens" culminating in the great "March of the Turks", and a version of Carl Maria von Weber's "Grand Polonaise Brilliante" that Liszt re-arranged for piano and orchestra (He does this same feat with Schubert's "Wanderer Fantasie" on the next vol.) showing Liszt's impeccable talent for working well with other composers' music.
    The sound of this all-digital collection is fabulous--Perhaps a little on the compressed side, but I certainly could let that slide in favor of the material! And did I mention Leslie Howard can play?? Boy can he!! If you really like Liszt, this is a MUST-HAVE!!

    Run on sentence, but it's true. There's a volume II which covers the gamut of Liszt's writing for piano & orchestra. I'm familiar with a few other performances of the piano concerti and these compare favorably, believe me. The other unfamiliar pieces are very entertaining and as we expect from Liszt go from great highs to a few questionable passages but there's so much good music on these two long discs I'd say snatch this one right up along with the next volume.

    Volume 18 in the Hyperion Liszt series resembles the fine sequence of "Liszt at the Opera" recordings which would eventually gross 12 CD's. The "Fantasies, transcriptions and paraphrases" that make up the present recording are based on and inspired by theatrical or "incidental" music. The composers represented are an odd grouping: Beethoven, Weber, Mendelssohn and Lassen. Furthermore, Liszt's selection of pieces is unique and even admirable. I think most listeners will be appreciative of the Beethoven and Mendelssohn fantasias, but the pieces by Lassen are marvelous rarities, whose charms improve after each relistening.

    Liszt's interest in the Turkish March from Beethoven's "The Ruins of Athens" is not exactly a peculiar one. Anton Rubinstein, among others, also arranged a virtuoso transcription of the music for piano. Liszt's straightforward transcription of the March is endearing by itself, but the subsequent elaborations and full-blown fantasies Liszt indulges himself in are even more striking. Both the "Fantasy" and "Capriccio" on Beethoven's incidental music employs themes other than the March, and Liszt demonstrates a mastery of dramatic thrust. Both works are extrovert and bolstered by bravura piano-writing, but the quality of Beethoven's themes and Liszt's imagination collaborate quite nicely. Liszt's transcription of Mendelssohn's Wedding March and the Dance of the Elves from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" is more like a paraphrase. According to Howard, "Liszt's often witty interpretation of the famed Mendelssohn Wedding March was a regular recital war-horse" and I can't help but be entertained by Liszt's spectacular variations.

    Liszt's own stage work for a Herder play, Prometheus Bound, helped spawn his symphonic poem "Prometheus," but also a choral piece, the "Reapers' Chorus." As usual, Liszt's transcription is adroit and pianistic, and Howard feels that "among an output so vast it is perhaps an inevitable pity that this attractive trifle has fallen in oblivion." While the transcription of a Weber aria from "La Preciosa" is a welcome bonus, one of the main pleasures of this recording stems from the transcriptions of pieces by Eduard Lassen (1830-1904), who "succeeded Liszt as Kapellmeister at the Weimar court in 1858." The Symphonic Intermezzo is a splendid large-scale work in possession of some lovely themes. Howard notes, "Liszt sometimes sequentially extends the material in a way characteristic of his later works." Lassen's best ideas, however, show in his incidental music to Hebbel's "Nibelungen" and Goethe's "Faust." The outer sections of "Hagen and Krimhild" are dark evocations: the musical equivalent of an ominous Hellish pit that the composer of Funerailles and the Dante Sonata must have loved. "Bechlarn" is Lassen's gem, though, and lingers in the mind with its duality of yearning melancholy and naivete. Although the two pieces based on Faust are nothing out of the Romantic ordinary, they are equally appealing and passionately played. The polonaise of "Hoffest" has a substantial melodic idea which Liszt infuses with gorgeous harmonization and ornamentation.

    Bottom line: This Volume may not have the inimitable masterpieces found in the "Liszt at the Opera" series, but for reasons of special historical interest and simple listening pleasure, I cannot give this recording less than five stars. The Beethoven fantasias and the Mendelssohn paraphrase are certainly worth reviving, while Lassen's pieces have many moments of drama and beauty that are worth hearing.

    I think Liszt had slightly better luck at the opera, but there's much to enjoy here. Just look at the music, and imagine it transcribed for piano in Liszt's inimitable fashion. Go for it!

      Excellent accounts of some of Liszt's lesser known but still entertaining scores. Especially fun is the "Fantasy on Beethoven's 'Ruins of Athens'" as Liszt dazzles us with a display of virtuosity ably handled here by Jeno Jando. Only the "Grande Fantasie on themes from Berlioz' 'Lelio'" can be said to outstay its welcome and that due to the paper-thin thematic material of the original rather than Liszt's heady concoction! Performances are up to the challenge and for it's incredibly low price this recording is a genuine steal! Enjoy.
