3 out of 5 stars okay but the first two were better.......2007-06-21

i enjoy this, but when given the choice between all three in the buzzin' fly trilogy, i prefer the first two. the third disc just isn't as memorable. i strongly recommend volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Another fine addition to the Buzzin' Fly Series.......2006-12-01

I loved the first volume, played it til it wore out. I think it's hard to find good deep house mix CDs that have a consistently good track selection. Ben Watt's mix CDs seem though to fit that mould perfectly from start to finish. His live mixes are just as good. I highly recommend this CD for lovers of fine deep house music. If you liked the others in the series, then you should love this. His website has extensive samples of each album and some of the live mixes if you're unconvinced and want to listen further. This one's a low risk purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Don't pass this one up.......2006-10-05

This album almost has it's own genre. It is as if trance and techno met a rock like beat. I slept on this album at first but got lost in it on a second listen. This is about as far away from deep dish as you can get without passing out of the techno genre. Tracks 2, 3 & 7 are all hot.

4 out of 5 stars The Buzz About #3.......2006-08-14

I was waiting for this cd for a while now. I have enjoyed all the previous Buzzin' Fly and Lazy Dog releases. As usual, this disc lives up to the hype and delivers a sound that is current yet ahead of the rest. This cd has a more electronic/techno feel but it still works and has the Buzzin' Fly sound. Mr. Watts continues give us cds that are organic, funky and keeps evolving.

5 out of 5 stars Ben Watt delivers again.. and again.........2006-08-03

let me start out by saying that trying to top one of the BEST house/lounge albums EVER released (Buzzin' Fly vol. 2) is no easy matter. when i found out Vol 3 was coming out, i thought to myself "it won't even come close to being as good as vol.2, i know it" simply becuase vol.2 is a masterpiece to say the least.
with that said, immediately after listening to Vol.3, all i could do was stand and applaud -- Ben Watt should take a bow. there is no doubt he's one of the best in the industry, and with his latest addition to the Buzzin' Fly series, you can clearly see why. He always brings something new, something different. just when u think you got his music figured out, he throws a spin on it, and you love it more.. as everyone who listens to this kind of music knows, most of the tracks on his albums you probably won't like the first time you listen to them... but after a week, you couldn't pay someone to try and get the tunes out of your head. Absolutely mesmerizing, from begining to end. Just hit play and let Ben take you on a journey...
It's impossible to try and pick a best track or two here, but Kayot's "Clear Sky" (track 4) and Watt's "Attack Attack Attack" (track 7) are the first songs to stick out. Solid, solid tracks.. you just cant stop listening to them, and when you do it's hard not to get up and dance, they take control. He chills it out with tracks 10 and 12 (Madoka's "Metamotional" and Jimpster's "Square Up") which take you to a totally different level.. a 'happy' place where nothing can go wrong. He finishes off with Lephtee's "So Far Back(Phonique Remix Edit)" -- Classic, classic Ben Watt. not much more i can say there.
This album is just as good as its predecessor, very Highly recommended. A must-buy for every deep house/lounge lover. Ben Watt continues to bless us with his divine music..

5 out of 5 stars Finally and Fulfilling!.......2005-10-28

Believe the hype, _Shining_ fans. These bits and pieces of music - volume 1 focuses more on "studio music and textures" of the themes devised for the film while volume 2 spends its allotted tracks on the more fully developed orchestra tracks - hold just about everything. I'll encourage you to follow that impulse/interest and add this work to your collection.

What do you get? Well, for me, the treat was volume 2's first track - the film's title track - Ms Carlos explains why Kubrick nixed it - but it is as haunting as the final draft that follows Jack Torrance's lil yellow bug to The Overlook climbing the Rockies. The other tracks are renderings and attempts to put the novel into music forms. The liner notes are great - like a listening session over coffee with the composer.

Both volumes are must haves for those of us all agog over the film's score (and scoring possibilities) but if you just want to hold a haunting, get volume 2 and put track one on repeat until you, that hag hottie in the tub, or your six year old's index finger hollers, "redrum!"

5 out of 5 stars Settling Old Scores.......2005-10-10

This second volume of Wendy's lost film soundtracks concentrates more on her full orchestral scores. Although she achieved fame as a synthesist, one reason she succeeded so well is her knowledge of and attention to timbral colors and the placement of different voices -- in short, orchestration. It should come as little surprise therefore that when writing for a full orchestra she's fully accomplished and impressively skilled.

Synthesizer cues are also included, from early (1981) novelty demonstrations for Dolby Labs to later (1998) soundtrack work utilizing her state-of-the-art digital synthesizers.

As usual for her, voluminous liner notes detail not only the working methods behind each of the pieces, but also glimpses into the politics and disappointments that delayed the release of these tracks. How many composers could survive having a significant portion of their career locked away in a vault for 25 years?

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, comprehensive overview of Handel's works.......2005-01-08

Philips offers a comprehensive overview of the works of George Frideric Handel, featuring a variety of conductors (Marriner, Maazel, Colin Davis, etc.) This 2-CD set includes 43 tracks spanning over 2.5 hours, and provides an excellent introduction to Handel. The "hits" are here: "Solomon - Arrival of the Queen of Sheba," "Water Music," "Messiah," and "Music for the Royal Fireworks." Equally impressive are (relatively) lesser known works such as "Chaconne in G," "Zadok the Priest - Coronation Anthem," and "Serse - Largo."

Handel's versatility will astound the novice listener. His compositional virtuosity and ingenuity transcend a variety of arrangements and tone colors, including works for full orchestra, chamber pieces, oratorios, and music for harp, piano, organ and guitar.

The recordings are top-notch and the performances are consistently excellent. Despite spanning nearly three decades of recorded works, the production values are remarkably cohesive; this compilation is a masterpiece of digital mastering.

If you're willing to invest a little extra money and time to familiarize yourself with one of the all-time great composers, "The Best of Handel" will reward you with years of enjoyment. I was a casual fan of Handel before receiving this CD as a gift nearly four years ago. Now, Handel ranks as one of my favorites (along with Beethoven, Bach and Chopin) - thanks largely to this brilliant compilation.

      5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2000-09-17

            2 out of 5 stars Trash.......2006-04-06

I rate this CD 2 stars solely off Bun B's verse on Kodak Moment (RMX). He flows that hard. Everything else: is trash.

This is a very weak CD and the fact that it is CONTENT PROTECTED easily make this CD the worst in my collection. Sad.

            3 out of 5 stars How Come?.......2006-03-16

Man, i was a fan of So So Def when it came to Da Brat. Right now, her and Young Capone are the only ones that seem lyrikal to me. Young Capone, he seems like the Lloyd Banks of So So. Evem though i don't like G-Unit, Lloyd Banks is the best there. But back to this, Da brat is really the only one that can stand up in the rap world and be recognized as a tru rapper/emcee. Brat, keep doin what u doin, Capone, switch to Black Wall Street if you wanna be liked.

1 out of 5 stars this is the weakest thing jd's done.......2006-03-09

come on jd you can do better this whole project is awful.

            1 out of 5 stars 1-1/2 stars -- Dumb, dry and trashy.......2006-02-28

First things first: this compilation shouldn't even be called Jermaine Dupri Presents... because JD is only involved with two songs on here (he stars in "Gotta Getcha", and he produces one other song). Anyway, I'm not exactly sure what possessed him to put together Young, Fly & Flashy Vol. 1; whether he was just thinking about "the way we were", or if he just wanted to showcase some new young talent. Actually, maybe I shouldn't have said the latter, because it looks like JD dug up some of the most UNtalented people ever.

But things aren't very inspiring with the known artists, like when J-Kwon and Daz try to save "10 Toes". And I wonder how long ago that song was made because in it, J-Kwon says he's 17, but that's how old he was when "Tipsy" came out. I don't know WHY JD decided to dig up has-beens KP & Envyi for the dismal "Put Cha Hands Up" (that title even sounds like it came from 1997), and as for "I Think They Like Me", if it's really Dem Franchize Boyz' song, how come they're the only ones in there that can't rap?

Most of the rappers on here are unknowns, but in the end they really aren't WORTH knowing because even JD is a better rapper than they are. Miss B's "Grown Man" suffers from a corny chorus, and T. Waters' "Throw'd Off" is just plain wack. And Cato's lazy "So What" made me say just that. But the album's nadir is the title track, performed by Young Capone, Midnight, Champagne Shawty and C-Dirt. Not only is there lackluster production, but the guys' rapping is so bad that they make Chingy look like Rakim.

The only saving grace to this whole compilation is Bun-B's verse on the otherwise terrible "Kodak Moment". Unlike that title, though, this album isn't anything to remember. If Jermaine ever makes a Young, Fly & Flashy Vol. 2, I'll be the first person not to get it.

2 out of 5 stars Young, Fly & Flashy , Vol 1 by Jermaine Dupri.......2006-01-18

It's been nine years since So So Def CEO (and now Virgin Records' President of Black Music) Jermaine Dupri released the label's gold-certified compilation So So Def Bass All Stars, Vol. 1. Since then he has steered the careers of rappers Da Brat and Bow Wow as well as releasing three other compilations showcasing the diversity and talent among the South. In the past, all of Dupri's compilations have been launching pads for regional artists as well as critically-acclaimed albums. Not so with his latest effort, Young, Fly & Flashy Vol.1 (So So Def/Virgin). A poor attempt at showcasing the newest So So Def signees, the album falls short of providing a taste of how innovative and dope Southern Hip-Hop can be. Instead we are given a project full of lackluster tracks, recycled concepts and artists whose passion is just not enough to set them a part from the popular players of today's burgeoning Southern rap scene.

Newcomers Young Capone and The Kid Slim fail to impress on tracks like "I'm Hot" and the tedious "10 Toes". With talented artists like Boyz N Da Hood and Slim Thug repping heavily for the South, competition is too fierce for Dupri's newest draft picks to deliver with no originality. Party joints like "Gotta Getcha", which is too short to be enjoyed, and KP and Envyi's "Put Cha Hands Up" are both mediocre attempts at club-friendly radio songs. "Put Cha Hands Up" just does not get the party started the same way the duo's 1997 hit "Shorty Swing My Way" did. And what could have been a hot ode to exotic dancers if it was just a little longer ("Gotta Getcha"), clocks in at less than three minutes.

But Southern enthusiasts don't fret; all is not lost on this LP and there are a few tracks worth checking for. "Kodak Moment" is authentic down-South rider music featuring Kavious, Pastor Troy and UGK's Bun B. The addictive "I Think They Like Me" (Remix) is made for stuntin' in your ride and worth a listen just to hear Da Brat's scene-stealing bars. ATL veteran Pastor Troy shines again on "Just to Fight", which is reminiscent of his classics "No More Play in GA" and "I Declare War." Another heater, "Throw'd Off" featuring T. Waters is a catchy party joint guaranteed to have heads nodding in the club although the Asian-influenced track sounds similar to the Terror Squad's 2004 hit "Lean Back".

Staying true to today's formulaic topics (bling, pimping and the streets) combined with a lack of originality, Young, Fly and Flashy Vol. 1 could not have been more appropriately-titled. The album does little to give a true glimpse of the potential these newcomers possess, nor does it highlight the musical creativity and hit-making ability Jermaine Dupri is known and celebrated for.
