In the mid '70s, trumpeter Randy Brecker and his saxophonist brother Michael were the Wynton and Branford Marsalis of their jazz fusion day. This live date features the brothers performing with the WDR Big Band in Koln, Germany in 2003. Augmented by conductor/arranger Vince Mendoza, bassist Will Lee, and drummer Peter Erskine, the Breckers revive some of their hits from their classic LPs Back to Back, Don't Stop the Music, Heavy Metal Be-Bop, Detente, and Strap-Hangin'. Randy's full-bodied trumpet tones and Michael's Tranish sheets-of-sound sax appeal reveal their tradition-born technique applied to funk, world, and pop-oriented soundscapes. The peppery title track and the mid-tempo backbeat on "Sponge" reveal their mainstream jazz cred, and the oblique "Wayne Out" is a tribute to Wayne Shorter. The Latin-tinged "Shanghigh" is a shout-out to Randy's former boss Horace Silver, while the percussive "For Barry" reveals Michael's type of tenor madness. Contrary to some critics, these fusion cats could swing. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars 5 reasons why I love this CD!.......2007-06-07

1. Although I much prefer him on flugelhorn, as its title suggests, Randy Brecker serves up some really funky jazz trumpet on this CD. It was recorded live during the Leverkusener Jazztage at The Forum, Leverkusen, Germany in 2003.

2. His brother Michael joins him on tenor saxophone and Michael Brecker is one of my most favourite latter-day jazz saxophonists.

3. Jim Beard completes the band line up on piano and synthesizer alongside Will Lee on electric bass, the one and only Peter Erskine on drums (who else?) and Marcio Doctor on percussion.

4. The entire proceedings are backed by The WDR Big Band Köln, arranged and conducted by Vince Mendoza. Anyone who's read any of my more recent reviews will know I'm a total Mendoza groupie. In fact, he arranges all the music on this CD and his signature arrangements just add to my overall enjoyment of it.

5. Fantastic songs like "Sponge", "Shanghigh", "And Then She Wept" (although I still prefer the version on the Brecker Brothers 1994 album Out of the Loop), "Strap-Hangin'", "Freefall", "Levitate" and "Song For Barry".

Produced by Lucas Schmid & Joachim Becker, this is one piece of fun concert jazz music. What's not to love?

5 out of 5 stars The Brecker's never cease to amaze.......2007-04-08

This is a great live album with superior playing all around as well as sound. This is a must for anyone who loves the passion in the live performance. As usual, the songs performed are groovy as well as funky. They are also soulful and full of feeling. Between Randy's trumpet and Michael's Sax, they create the entire rythm and emotion of these songs.
Sadly Michael Brecker is no longer with us, but his music will always be a positive statement toward all his accomplishments. The man was a brilliant saxaphone player, who not only gave us his own music, but played with just about everybody. The man was and is simply unforgettable.

The ending of this disc is what sealed the deal for me. The track "levitate" is a Randy Brecker piece which is slow, moody and extremely emotional. It's the quietest piece on the disc. Incredible trumpet playing. In my opinion, the last track "SONG FOR BARRY" is one of the best live performances ever. My passion is live performances and I have a list of my favorites that run the gamut from The Allman's to Dire Straits to King crimson. "SONG FOR BARRY" is what makes this disc. This song has all the elements:it builds and builds and then explodes into an incredible ending-the solos are amazing-the passion is proven.
All in all, great concert performance. The last track is worth every listen. This will rank up there in my list of all-time greatest live performances.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific sound.......2007-03-31

This is a great CD. I usually try to buy the Grammy Award winners. This truly deserved the award. Jazz is so important to our musical culture, this CD will be enjoyed by all musical tastes

5 out of 5 stars Some Skunk Funk - Randy Brecker.......2007-03-22

Great Big Band Album - Very great playing and creative arrangements. We will all miss Michael Brecker's great solos.

5 out of 5 stars JAZZ FUNK VIRTUOSITY! AN INCREDIBLE RECORDING!.......2007-03-01

I rarely rate or review intellectual property unless I find it incredibly terrible or excellent. There is so much "mediocrity" in the world that I don't have the time to waste reviewing the bulk of what is written or recorded.

This is a MUST have CD for Horn Lovers, Jazz & Funk listeners. The Brecker Brothers may be two of the worlds all time best players. Jim Beard on Keys, Will Lee on Bass & Peter Erskine on Drums also do fantastic jobs. Marcio Doctor on Percussion is another tasteful addition. No weak links on this recording.

What is even more incredible is the sonic quality of this Telarc LIVE RECORDING! Although TELARC recordings are almost always sure bets, this one is done in Hybrid Multichannel.

Light up your best Surround Processor & Speakers and hear the boys play in 5.1 or 7.1 channel surround with soul moving perfection. I can't remember the last time I was this impressed with the viruosity of a perfomance AND the quality of a live recording.

Add the Hybrid Multichannel and it's the best recoridng I've heard in years!

4 out of 5 stars The Longest Barrel Ride/Self Titled Album 2 CD Set.......2006-07-22

I don't know what the track listing that Amazon offers is of, but this is a 2 CD set that includes Slightly Stoopid's original self titled album (the original pressing of which is extremely rare to come by) and the classic `Longest Barrel Ride' album. The self titled album shows the band in their early, rawest form. It is a 14 track CD primarily consisting of straight punk rock songs with touches of reggae and hip-hop here and there. Overall, it's a decent punk CD with above average bass work.

The real gem is the `Longest Barrel Ride', which is the album where Slightly Stoopid really balanced the sounds of punk/reggae/hip-hop together creating their distinct Southern California sound. Although Sublime influences are prominent throughout the album, Slightly Stoopid definitely has their own sound and style. `The Longest Barrel Ride' still maintains much of the rawness of the Self Titled album that I think gives the music an edge that their newer stuff lacks. They still play the songs found on these two albums at their live show which are absolutely awesome (You can download some of their live stuff at sublimearchive.com)

Here's the actual track listing:

Skunk Anansie's music is as disparate as the members of the band. The multiracial British quartet is fronted by the dynamic Skin, a black feminist whose lyrics and potent delivery demand attention. As a result, the dozen songs on Post Orgasmic Chill are a compelling lot, though too multifarious to give the album real focus. Tool meets 4 Non Blondes? Heart's Ann Wilson on a rant? Skunk Anansie cover many bases with facility; their songs are dynamic and full of surprising twists. Odd bits of orchestration run into aggressive rock, which lead into commercial ballads ("Secretly"). From the crisp metallic spews on "On My Hotel TV" to the "The Skank Heads," which sounds as if it should be part of a musical, Skunk is by turns soulful and sultry, shrill and frantic, but always energetic and fiery. Not an easy band or album to get a handle on; nonetheless, Post Orgasmic Chill is a compelling collection. --Katherine Turman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Most under-rated band ever..........2005-04-23

If you're already on this page, reading this review...chances are you'll love this group. Skunk Anansie was a very talented group. The lead vocalist, Skin is just amazing! It's just too bad that not many people heard of this band. I heard of them through some soundtracks that I had. I was quick to check out if they had any albums released and I bought this straightaway. And I have no regrets whatsoever. The music on this album is very good, far beyond my expectations. If you thought groups like Evanescence is good, give this a try. There is a lot of emotion and strength in the songs, which keep you hooked on for a very long time. Although I don't listen to this album as often, I still do pop in this CD at least once a fortnight to enjoy their music, which I rarely do for the other albums I own. It's just a pity that this band broke up. Ah, well...at least they produced good music before they left.

5 out of 5 stars The best band you've never heard of..........2003-11-30

Now, chances are you haven't heard of this band, and that's a shame. There are reasons for this. For one thing, Virgin America has not done a good job of promoting this band as Virgin UK, and that's a shame. The second reason is that the band sadly called it quits in 2001. Despite major tours with acts such as Sevendust. Rammstein and Staind, there just weren't enough fans here in the U.S. to catch on to this band.

But it's never too late to pick this album up, and you should, let me tell you why. First of all, I don't think there's anything like this in the U.S. market. Skunk Anansie combine a Nirvana-like grunge sound with soulful vocals and the common acoustics performed in the background. Their vocalist, Skin (who is now doing her solo project), is a black woman and also a lesbian. The song "On My Hotel T.V." has a great meaning, as it is about being prejudiced and discriminated for race and sexual preferences. But the most important thing that Skin brings to the group is her beautiful voice. Skin definitely is the core of the band. Her voice is what separates this band from crappy nu-metal acts like Godsmack and Staind. Her voice is so soulful and melodic, I'd say she's my favorite female vocalist (the previous title holder was Lacuna Coil's Cristina Scabbia, who also has an angelic voice, by the way). Just listening to Skin ooze her voice on songs like "Tracy's Flaw", "Good Things Don't Always Come To You", "You'll Follow Me Down" and "I'm Not Afraid" sends chills down my spine. The rest of the band complements this with acoustic melodies, quality bass licks that you can hear, and I think their drummer is really cool too, preferably his work on "And This Is Nothing That I Thought I Had".

So, if I WERE to make comparisons between Skunk and other bands, I'd say they're almost like a joint project between Soundgarden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sevendust and Tool. I can almost hear a part of each of those bands in their music, and I even read an interview of Sevendust, and the band stated that SA had been quite a big influence to them, and they even invited Skin to sing on their 1999 release Home, on the song "Licking Cream".
So, there you go...

Put simply, I loved this album from beginning to end. And this is coming from a person who's mostly into death metal like Six Feet Under and such, so that should tell you something. My personal favorites off the album are "Tracy's Flaw", "Lately" (definitely my favorite), "Good Things Don't Always Come To You", "You'll Follow Me Down" and "I'm Not Afraid".

Listen, if my review hasn't convinced you to pick this up, then I'm sorry. But you should know what you're missing out on. If you are convinced, then I'm happy =}. But this album is hard to find, so you're probably better off ordering this from a record store, like I ended up doing. Again, this album has made a positive influence on my life and I think it will do the same to you too. God bless...
R.I.P. - Skunk Anansie (1994-2001)

5 out of 5 stars intense, beautiful, hardcore, comfortable..........2003-01-28

from the introductory adrenaline rush, Skin sings and screams her way through emotions and pains and trials, and does it with such grace and intensity...her vocals overlay the awesome riffs and beats...the album, overall, is epic, wonderful, gruesome, honest, brutal, erotic, relaxing...highly recommended...

5 out of 5 stars Consider yourself "Chilled" ..........2002-04-06

I first heard Skin (the lead singer) on the Iommi CD and thought to myself, "Wow, a chick that can hang with the Black Sabbath crowd ..." but this band is SO much more! I started with Stoosh, and now own all of the band's albums, but Post Orgasmic Chill is the best, by far. They are raw and sexy and smooth and cool all at the same time. How does a group achieve all of that? They remind me of OLD Heart a lot, but with a razor-sharp edge and unbridled passion. The added benefit to this CD is that it's enhanced for interactive use on a computer, and has some extremely cool video clips of the band, the video of Charlie Big Potato, and some sweet extras! Hesitating on buying it? Don't be ridiculous! I'd pay twice full price for this album. It's a constant in my travel bag, and I even quote one of the songs in my signature file of my e-mail ... "God licks your face, just like your dog." If you never buy another Skunk Anansie album, you have to at least own this one. I can't imagine anyone it wouldn't appeal to.

With the seventh installment of Pavarotti & Friends: For Cambodia and Tibet, the beloved tenor assembles yet another all-star cast of musicians in hopes of helping the children of Cambodia and Tibet. The music of the pop stars--which ranges from the modern rock of the veteran Eurythmics to the dance-pop of Aqua--really steals the show here, with Pavarotti lending his impeccable vocal support. Tracy Chapman performs "Baby Can I Hold You" as a duet with Pavarotti, and Eurythmics team up with him on "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)." Of course, the tenor's fans will be begging to hear the opera great in his element, and it's no surprise that he shines on Bizet's "Agnus Dei," with international pop star Mónica Naranjo joining in; Eduardo Di Capua's "O Sole Mio," with Savage Garden; or even Luigi Denza's "Funiculi, Funicula," with Aqua and a children's chorus. As globetrotting benefit tributes go, this is a mixed bag, but there's probably something here for everyone. --Jason Verlinde

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent video...........2002-10-13

I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....

And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs sung by a diverse group of artists.......2002-02-07

As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.

It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.

If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.

5 out of 5 stars Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04

Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."

4 out of 5 stars Very diverse! Loved it!.......2000-12-18

I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05

This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible........2006-11-26

I'm a huge shadow fan and I was hugely disappointed to find that this album is basically one long mixtape of obscure and, in my opinion, terrible west coast hip hop. I didn't think it was the real DJ Shadow until I heard an ad for The Privat Press at the very end of the CD. It could be that I'm an old school NY hip hop head and this just wasn't my style. It could be that the music on this CD is simply weak hip hop. All I know is I wish I could return it. Contact me if you want to buy it cheap.

5 out of 5 stars amazing.......2006-09-23

This is an amazing record, especially the first third. Shadow mixes urban pop and heavy rap, then veers into 70s funk in the blink of an eye. He hides millions of little sounds under the music and creates a mix that bristles with incredible dynamics and intensity. Anything can happen and does-an urban pop groove, a crushing ska rap, and a Door's like melody-and all before you can snap your fingers.

In the middle , the CD does get into repetative hip hop and the inital intensity of the mix does become difuse, but picks up in the end with some fuzz rock and disco.

Overall, the impact is amazing and well worth your money.

I only wish Shadow were more candid about the records he used here. It is like reading an encylopeida without headings.

Oh well. GET IT NOW.

3 out of 5 stars Breakalicious mix that sneaks up on you.......2006-09-06

Okay, I have to retract my earlier comment (see below). After dropping this into the music library, I've just listened to it a few times more ... and each time, I'm surprised by new songs that I had missed, or new sly mixes that Shadow's thrown in there.

Really, it's a great mix that's not totally obvious at first listen. For the hardcore Shadow fan, I say this is worth getting. Shadow's moving in a new direction, it seems, with The Outsider, and this provides an interesting bridge between his well-known love for funk, and 21st Century hip-hop.

Oh yeah, and when I was referring to "Crump" in my earlier post, I think I really meant "hyphy" although that's splitting hairs.

I'm a *huge* fan of DJ Shadow, and have a *lot* of his work. This, unfortunately, is one of his albums that will get the least play. It's a fine mix of old-school soul and new-school "Crunk" or "Crump", which I - personally - can't stand.

If you're a collector, go ahead and get it, but if you're into any of Shadow's previous releases, be wary, as this isn't his usual stuff, IMHO. Really, get any of the rest of his albums and be totally satisfied. Save this one for last.

5 out of 5 stars MIX ALBUM....(in good taste).......2006-06-14

This CD is a 1 track, 67 minute, testimate to the superhuman mixing abilities of DJ Shadow (Mr. Davis). Whoda thunk it?

1 out of 5 stars not your typical shadow record.......2006-05-07

i was skeptical from the start, it says something about reinventing hip hop on the front; but I bought it neways thinking that ne thing shadow makes is good. well i was in for a rude awakening. its all a bunch of odd ball rap songs weaved together, some new sounding/some older. i used to like rap, now i hate it. its too commercialized, there arent any "actual" rappers ne more, and its all about sex, every single song has something to do with gettin it on; its really quite sickening. whatever happened to nwa, pe, bdp, rundmc etc.
enuf about that, this album has some newer rap songs that i have no idea what they are but they definitely suck, after that there is some old school. shadow doesnt do much scratching or nething really. the one bright spot is an old too short song.
i would advise against buying this album, save your money for some "fitty cent" or "whatchu know about that?" "ringtones"

    5 out of 5 stars A classic.......2005-10-01

I don't think this album received the credit it should have. The performance of the band and the arrangements are outstanding.I really enjoy listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars the edge of deliverence.......2005-02-24

with this massive album, skunk anansie has created a spot for itself, although there are dominant songs like "hedonism" or "brazen" each title preserves it's authenticity strongly marked by skins input. Her voice is a label on this album, but still highlights and goes very well with the instrumentals. Unlike many rock albums this one does not struggle to overcome many of the cliches, some just cannot override, because we see here a powerful combination of songwriting, instrumentals, and voice display without any excess. Still excess runs as a virtue on this album, there is always a peak, an outrage, that is uncontrollable, that renders a catarchtic moment to it, that separates it from the category of easy listening, especially that the band is at it's best...it is worth trying it out.

5 out of 5 stars Not enough words to describe it..........2004-01-31

I own two Skunk Anansie albums. This, and their last one, Post Orgasmic Chill. I only heard of this band shortly after they had already broken up in 2001. However, I only started getting into them a few months ago. For some odd reason, they never had a decent-sized fanbase in the US, and that is a shame, considering all the sh*tty Limp Bizkit cds that sell so much these days. Skunk is, er, was a band with real talent. They molded a unique sound, blending psychedelic rock with the occasional heavy metal, and even some pop-rock to complete the mix. But unlike the recent slump of pop-rock chart-toppers (*cough* Nickelback), Skunk blended these elements perfectly, and made it seem so easy. Out of the two albums I do own, I think POC is just slightly better, only because some of the songs on Stoosh are just a wee bit repetitive, but I also think that this record does a better job of capturing emotions than Post does. Whereas Post has way too many mood swings, Stoosh on the other hand keeps it under control. Almost every song on here is great, with the exception of "Yes It's F*cking Political". It starts off promising, with some nice guitar work that sounds not unlike Rage Against the Machine, but Skin tries to get experimental with her voice and it doesn't sound good at all, if you ask me.
Every other song, however, is good in its own right, with "Hedonism" possibly being the strongest. That song is beautiful, from the somewhat sad lyrics, to the soulful chorus. "Milk Is My Sugar" is a nice, Black Sabbath-like opener that sets a pace for the album. "All I Want" is a nice mid-tempo song, and "Twisted (Everyday Hurts)" offers a great drum beat with some slightly distorted bass. But, my favorite song just might be "We Love Your Apathy". That song just bathes in utter brilliance; it's a catchy, upbeat tune that really left an impression since the first time I listened to it.

So, if you, like me, are tired of talentless crap like Puddle of Mudd and Linkin Park, and yet not satisfied with death metal, then SA is the perfect band for you. Note that this is not an easy band to get a hold of, and that this album does indeed contain a Parental Advisory label, so if cussing doesn't appeal to you then don't buy it. But if you plan on getting into this band, Stoosh is an excellent place to start.

    4 out of 5 stars Hedonism!.......2003-02-13

Great voice, great songs, great lyrics,
rebellious sounds of love and hate.
Skunk screams out her best in eleven songs.
You can find dramatic ballads and heavy
rock songs on this album. The best ones
are (of course!) "Hedonism" (single) which is
an impressing ballad with bisexual contents,
"Brazen (Weep)" (single), "Twisted (Everyday hurts)",
"Infidelity (only you)" and "Glorious pop song".
It's an album full of rebellion, fight for
minorities, aggression and feelings. Buy it!

this cd was a great intro to shortbus. they remind me a lot of SI SENORITA which most people don't know about but you can find them on my space. its a mix of ska and reggae blended with rock. e wilson kills it and the sublime name lives on with shortbus.

5 out of 5 stars just buy it already.......2005-06-10

this is as good as any ep gets. it's an excellent intro for anyone interested in lb shortbus. although i recommend getting "flying ships of fantasy" instead or even better - get both of them (3 songs from this aren't on their lp). their live shows rock, anywhere between 2-3 hours of pure bliss. cool down to earth people that aren't afraid to talk to their fans, especially ras.

5 out of 5 stars Its what I call good music.......2003-01-17

If you like any of what these 4 musicians did before they formed the band "Long Beach ShortBus", you will like this cd. Its down to earth music and you will agree with the lyrics and tap to the beats.Even though they resemble the sound of "Sublime" and "Long Beach Dub Allstars", they definealty have their own Style. DO yourself the favor and buy this album. You wont be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Shortbus cd ....... expectations exceeded !.......2002-07-26

i wasn't sure what to expect when i got this ..... to say i was pleasently suprised is an under-statement ! this EP is amazing.
I have always been a big fan of RAS-1 & after hearing his work on this EP I am even more impressed.
Standouts for me are "California Grace" .... a great tune that alternates between mellow verses & a more "rocky" chorus. "Stray with me" continues to mesmerise me with it's multi-layered, trippy kind of feel ..... real passion in the delivery tops it off. Eric Wilson's bass lines are world class.
"Odd Walking Man" with vocals courtesy of Butthole Surfer Paul Leary tops the EP off for me with it's old skool LBC punk stylee.
The lyric "It's not about the junk i throw away, it's about the junk i fix" leaves me with a lasting impression of this songs meaning ....... this song is LBC punk at it's best.

the dub intro's are great providing even further proof of this bands versatility.

no, it doesn't sound like sublime or the long beach dub all stars ...... it sounds like shortbus ...... a very talented group of guys doing their thing .... and doing it amazingly well.

can't wait for a full length offering.

beg, borrow or steal this ........ just do yourself a favor & get it.

    4 out of 5 stars A pretty nice cd...........2002-07-11

If you're a fan of the Long Beach Dub Allstars, Sublime, or many of those So-Cal bands, I suggest you to buy this EP.

Don't expect alot of the usual Punk-Reggae-Ska style on the whole cd, as from you can hear this band, though this four-piece band borrows similar sounds from their roots, they add a new more rockier vibe to many of the tracks.

Eric Wilson fills in a pretty sick bass line for the intro and outro of this EP, which is also followed by nice instrumentation.

"California Grace" is a really nice mellow rock track, it reminds me a bit of the LBDAS song "Sunny Hours", but in a way it sounds more mature and you can hear some type of growth in part of Ras-1. Vocally, Ras-1 shines in this track. This track is one of the stand outs.

"Better Than This" in my opinion is the stand out track on the cd. It has some touches of reggae in it, but it also combines more of a steady rock vibe to it. There's some really nice guitar in this song.

One fan compared Ras-1 on "Take It Slow" to Bono from U2. Ras-1 does a pretty good job vocally on this song, this is one of the stand-out tracks. Though there is a touch of reggae, like most of this cd, it's more rock. It has a catchy chorus. All in all, a nice song.

"Stray With Me" is the calmest song on the cd. The song just mesmorizes you into a calm and collected vibe, it's a nice song to chill to. It's not one of my favorites, but it's pretty good. Not too much reggae in this track as well.

If you need your punk fix, "Odd Walking Man" is just the song for you. This track would go well with the next Tony Hawk Pro-Skater video game.

The reason I rated this EP 4 starts is because it's not close to perfection, but that doesn't mean it's not great. This is the debut release from LB Shortbus. Though the band might have its few similarities with Sublime and the Long Beach Dub Allstars, you can hear that the band has a different formula and I expect this band to come out with some really good releases in the future.

Buy this EP, it's worth it.

While everyone around them was celebrating resolutely white-boy, hedonistic, 1960s-inspired Britpop, the four Londoners who make up Skunk Anansie released a multiracial, politically-charged debut in 1995 that owed a greater debt to the funk-rock of Sly & the Family Stone and Living Colour and to the metal mightiness of prime Black Sabbath. Lyrically, in "Intellectualize My Blackness" and the "100 Ways to Be a Good Girl," vocalist Skin directly confronts prejudice and throws it back in the faces of its vessels. "Selling Jesus" and "I Can Dream" showcase her voice pretty much at the height of its power. Indeed, Paranoid & Sunburnt captures the band in top form. --Everett True

    5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-16

The first person to review this album must have been listening to a different album. This is far better than their next album. This one is great! This is also one of the greatest female fronted bands I have ever heard!

5 out of 5 stars You're too cool to be smart, but that is what you are..........2006-06-10

It does take blood and guts to be this cool, but Skunk Anansie surely aren't a cliche. In fact, they were probably one of the best British acts of the 90s, and quite possibly one of my favorite artists period. The band formed in 1994, just one year before they were signed to One Little Indian/Epic and released their '95 debut, and the fact that they got their act together so quickly and at such a young age wrote one of the best albums of that year astounds me.

Skunk Anansie (who sadly disbanded in 2001) were originally comprised of vocalist Skin, guitarist Ace, and bassist Cass. Mark Richardson, currently in Feeder, would become the band's drummer later on. Nothing quite like Skunk existed at this time - few multiracial, aggro-rock bands could be found aside from Rage Against the Machine, and the British music scene, populated by such silliness as the Spice Girls, wasn't exactly in its healthiest state. Many credit such bands as Radiohead and Placebo as singlehandedly keeping British music alive throughout the nineties; however, Skunk Anansie in my opinion offered the biggest wake-up call.

The black, bald, British woman Skin (who Sevendust fans are likely to recognize *hint hint*) and her soulful voice (not to mention funky attitude) were the heart of SA's music, and gave the band an extra edge that would even attract the attention of Icelandic diva Bjork, who personally requested the band to perform an alternate version of her song "Army of Me" which can be found on that particular single (the band also performed the song live with Bjork shortly afterwards). Skin's lyrics can be summed up as emotive, clever and expressive, but her voice is the band's biggest highlight. Accompanied by Ace's near-grungy guitars and Cass's bass rhythms, Skin can belt her demons out in heavy rockers "Selling Jesus" and "Little Baby Swastikkka" as well as tenderly coo out the chorus to the more up-tempo ballads "Charity" and "Weak." She's definitely the best black female singer I have ever heard, and could outsing Whitney Houston anyday. Furthermore, there are songs like the driving "I Can Dream" and upbeat closer "Rise Up" that make me wonder why this band never got the same exposure in America as they did in Britain.

After this album, the band would go on to make two more, 1996's Stoosh and 1999's Post Orgasmic Chill, the latter being my favorite of the band's works, as well as tour with such bands as Lenny Kravitz, Bad Religion, Soulfly, OOMPH! and Sevendust. There would eventually be a peaceful split in 2001, and Skin would move on to a solo career (her most recent album being released this past February), while Ace would work on music of his own and Mark would join the band Feeder. Still, I hope that Skunk reunite in the future, as they were easily one of the best bands of their time - not to mention they still are.

    5 out of 5 stars Criminally Ignored.......2002-08-17

There are various connotations that spring to mind when you hear the term "British Rock" but Skunk Anansie dare to break the mold. On this surprisingly strong and developed debut, they combine punk and metal to devastating effect, adding irresistably funky basslines and searing guitar riffs. Later in their career the band would add dark dance beats to their work, but this album is them at their rawest, heaviest and (in my opinion) best. Skunk Anansie manage to sound nothing like any of their peers, but the closest desciption that springs to mind would be a mixture of Rage Against the Machine's political rage, L7's bruising metal attack, early Red Hot Chili Peppers style funk and an attitude as powerful as the Sex Pistols' (but a lot more intellectual)

While not as commercial as Stoosh, I still believe this is accessible to any serious fan of rock and/or metal. Skunk Anansie also prove their sense of variety with slower, softer tracks like Weak and Charity. Little Baby Swastikkka is an inspired mixture of loud/soft dynamics, little girl whispers, malevolent riffs and sheer power.

Because of their nationality, they sometimes (wrongly) get lumped in with the British indie scene. Skunk Anansie should have made it in America, because (as well as being able to write great songs) they're blessed with a truly individualistic vocalist (Skin) who not only has one of the most beautiful and powerful female voices I've heard, but who puts her soul into the political lyrics and who actually has a clue about what she's singing.

Deliciously heavy, seething with rage, yet laden with catchy hooks and melodies: Paranoid and Sunburnt is a true gem.

    5 out of 5 stars Skin Rocks.......2001-01-12

Skin has the most amazing voice that defines each and every track on this album. Skin and co have managed on their first album to achieve what it takes other groups years to do, and that is to be able to produce an album good all the way through without having any low rated tracks or album fillers and each track beats the previous. Featuring key tracks like Weak, Charity and Selling Jesus, Skunk Anansie are going to be a band to watch out for in the future.

    3 out of 5 stars Pre-great noise.......2000-02-17

With the song »Weak« from this album, Skunk showed that the band had potential.

However, »Paranoid & Sunburnt« shows a political and wild rockband not fully developed yet. It plays the first attempts to become great, to find a unique style.

The band does not quite succeed to make a great album this time. The next one, »Stoosh« is a lot better.
