3 out of 5 stars In sections and beams.......2005-01-15

In theory, it's a good idea -- mixing bits of metal, dreampop, space-rock and one driving guitar. But Lansing-Dreiden never lives up to its promise in "Sectioned Beam." It feels like a good experimental album that hasn't decided if it wants to be the Beach Boys or a quirky ambient-pop group.

It opens with "Locks in Shadows," an oddball mix of sunny-sounding pop and spacey sound effects and echoes. If it had stuck to that, this EP would have been a winner. But in "Spectrum of Vapor," they stray into a rambling ambient-pop sound, with lazy waves of sound overlaid with some violins and metallic sound effects.

The title track seems to be halfway between the two, with a rock-pop vibe over spacey vocals. Of all the songs, it works the best -- there's an eerie, entrancing sound to this song, despite the occasionally silly vocal woo-wooing. Finally there is a remix of the title track, which tries unsuccessfully to mix heavy percussion with airy, delicate melodies.

This offbeat musical collective sounds like a less sunny, more peculiar version of the Polyphonic Spree. Their sound is polished, yet they seem to need their sound pulled together and tightened before it can be truly entrancing. It has everything it needs to be great, yet it is only okay.

The driving guitar is surprisingly catchy, and is one of the best aspects of this EP. The percussion, slow string arrangements and sound waves are kept muted, giving a dreamlike air to the instrumentation. And the vocals are not muffled, but rather enhanced with eerie echoing sounds. The only drawback is that occasionally the words get hard to make out.

Lansing-Dreiden may become a great band, if they decide what they want to be. "Sectioned Beam" has a couple of excellent tracks, but it also has a pair of confused duds.

5 out of 5 stars The pop-star path.......2003-11-23

Stylistically, this album fits somewhere between Vistamix and Sound On Sound. There's yet another track of "Do You Dream In Colour" (I've got it on two other albums) & what I'm relatively certain is a different mix of "Living In My Limousine" than appears on The Two-Fold Aspect Of Everything.

The tracks are driven by vocal & guitar; lacking any other handy notes, but a memory of something Nelson wrote in Two-Fold, this was about the era when he was recording band-oriented ideas solo & fleshing them out a little as part of his extensive "electronic notebooks" with the intent of doing a serious job of it later with other musicians. So, they're a little rough, but this lends an edginess so often lacking in synth-heavy music.

If I had to pick a favourite track, it'd be the very first: "Banal."

Album Description

Four-piece Texas rock band, UPSIDE, has built rabid following across Midwest and Texas during the past three years through constant touring, commercial and college radio airplay, grassroots street teams, mad hacker skills and chaotic, whiskey-soaked rock shows. Their previous two DIY releases Scope Of History and High Heels And Hand Grenades released in 2003 and 2004 respectively, have sold in excess of 5,000 units. UPSIDE are now regularly headlining and supporting sold out shows at the region's top club level venues (300-1000 capacity) with plans to tour the entire country in 2007. Having supported such diverse acts like Velvet Revolver, He Is Legend, Glassjaw, Blue October and Bowling For Soup, UPSIDE's buzz, grows every day. Their eagerly and highly-anticipated new album, Jim Beam and the American Dream (produced by Danny Grady of INJECTED) is the first and only recording that falls under the rock genre UPSIDE humbly created for themselves: "Texas Party Metal." Jim Beam and the American Dream is chock full of undeniable hooks, foot stomping/head banging rhythms and riffs so massive you cannot help but heave your horns towards the sky in thanks to the almighty god of rock. And just in case you were wondering: UPSIDE hates bands that wear eye shadow and carry journals, reality television and women's basketball. They love whiskey, Texas, their Chevy van, and starting fights with Bright Eyes fans. Fear not, rock-n-roll is alive and well in the heart of Texas! Release will contain BONUS DVD featuring documentary about the band and a "making of" feature on the album process.

5 out of 5 stars Jim Beam and the American Dream ROCKS!!!!.......2007-04-30

So a couple years ago when I first started getting into local music Upside was one of the first bands I heard of & I eventually bought their albums "Scope and History" & "High Heels & Hand Grenades". I have to say though "Jim Beam and the American Dream" is by far the best thing Upside has done and you can really hear their growths as musicians in this album from their other records. When "Jim Beam and the American Dream" begins it explodes into the track "Does This Make Me Look Dead?" which, after it ends, transitions immediately into "Campfire Vampires". This album is pretty much non-stop intense rock all the way through ("Puppets" "Silence Says It All" & "Hit the Ground" to name a few) and then ends with the slightly softer sided song "Daylight". So if you like rock music & you want an album that A)basically sounds freaking awesome and B)is something that you won't get tired of hearing for a VERY long time, than this is one CD that should be in your collection.

3 out of 5 stars it's ok.......2004-01-13

The second half this disc is better than the first half. I found the first half fell into that cliched jazz/house sound which felt a bit contrived to me. However, the second half flows and moves really well. It a good disc with some cool tracks but it is one of those discs that you have to decide if it's really worth it to hang on to for the few good tracks or should you scrap it for something else. I think I may scrap mine.

4 out of 5 stars smooth and sexy.......2002-04-17

i suppose that with the plethora of electronic records that are out there it would be all too easy to overlook this album. i discovered this record purely by accident; liking the look of the package and the fact that it was canadian i gave it a listen and it took me about 3 seconds to decide to buy it.

when to comes to straight-up house music i can get picky -- i don't like too many cheezy, trance-like synths and i loathe the euro-house club sound that somehow perpetuates itself across the music landscape. i'm also not huge on vocal house, tho i don't mind the occasional cooing here and there. froome's record seems tailor-made for my tastes; it's slinky and sensual, laid-back and yet subtley funky, and the production values are top shelf. the fact that he is able to create an entire record of mostly-instrumental house music that doesn't loose it's momentum and keeps one engaged is just phenomenal. this is a perfect record for home-listening, equally adept as music for a party or dinner or as a late-night, post-revelry comedown soundtrack. i'd even go so far as to say this album would work on a sunday morning -- it has a relaxed feel that just works.

can't recommend this one enough. along with 'will' by susumu yokota this is one awesome house record.
