One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto

There's something so apt about the band name chosen by Chad Petree and his Shiny Toy Guns playmates. Synth-driven, bright, and relentlessly safe, the plastic pop sound on We Are Pilots references the '80s even more explicitly than the Duran Duran-loving Killers. But despite the occasional chirpy electro (most directly referenced in "Le Disko") and the Human League makeup it's intensely modern, closer to emo than New Wave. The band's debut features a two-vocal combination, with Petree's young-man-in-love tenor rubbing up against Carah Faye's artier edge; she gives a song like "Jackie Will Save Me" a bratty boost. But more often, the band's peppy tragedies ("Chemistry of a Car Crash") and pretty heartaches ("Waiting") sound too tailored for alternative radio. The glossy production sheen, flawless execution, and overall glitz, however, make it easy to forget they're essentially just a tarted-up pop pastiche. In the midst of a quick, passionate fling, you could care less how meaningless and disposable it is... you just know it's hot. Your relationship with Shiny Toy Guns may be a similarly brief--if intense--affair, but you'll always have those first three or four listens. --Matthew Cooke

2 out of 5 stars amatuer at best! I am very displeased with this album given the hype.......2007-06-20

Shiny pilot poo poo yeah. I bought this album based on so many 5 star reviews and the claim that they were pop synth fun for the 21st century. I was thinking okay Cat, you are gonna like these cats, they are gonna be like space cowboys or maybe even something like pet shop boys or whatever. This album has little substance, this music is "lite" to say the least, the waning voice of the singer really does not do anything for me. The songwriting itself shines at times but overall the sound of this entire CD is just flat out FLAT. I was just really disappointed and was expecting a much greater showcase of talent. I would have to say bands like Coldplay or Modest Mouse fare much better in this category because these guys are trying to bring back a certain style of music that they obviously do not have the talent to perform.

    3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars. Decent........2007-06-20

I purchased this album having heard the songs "Le Disko" and "Don't Cry Out". Both songs were a great introduction to what seemed to be an extremely talented band that professionally mixed electronic elements with synth-pop and soft rock.
Unfortunately though, when I purchased the album, I found that, the female singer, one of the basic things that I thought made the two songs I had been exposed to so great, barely sang at all. Shiny Toy Guns apparently also has a male singer who definitely doesn't meet the high vocal standards that the female singer holds him to. So, his vocals on the CD basically ruined most of the songs for me.

Still, though, the LP has its high points. "We are Pilots", "Jackie Will Save Me", "Don't Cry Out" and "Le Disko" are all amazing songs that instantaneously grab your attention. The music, itself, is also pretty original for the most part.

So, if male singers that aren't just quite as good as female singers on a CD don't bother you too much and you're interested in hearing some generally unique and catchy music, I'd suggest you give this album a try.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful things in recent memory.......2007-06-13

Shiny Toy Guns has a completly unique signature to their music. "We Are Pilots" was refreshing to listen to, as the work really sets itself apart from most of the current albums out there. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys music. All of the tracks are great, and the price is very reasonable.

    4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2007-05-26

Great chillout album, with some nice hooks. It was quite unexpected for me, as I must admit that I made the purchase based on the single "Le Disko". However, I found the second single - "You are the One" - more in line with the flavour of the album and I find it has better replay value for me than "Le Disko" in any case.

5 out of 5 stars we are pilots.......2007-03-11

Shiny Toy Guns may not be doing anything incredibly novel on this album, but it sounds great nonetheless. The songs aren't by any means rough, yet not over-polished, still allowing enough of their artistic abilities to show through and not sounding like a run-of-the-mill pop record, or worse, like a rather pointless band that scenesters will worship for a month and then forget about. The vocal performances on the opening track, "You are the One", "Don't Cry Out" and "We are Pilots" are fantastic, in my opinion. The singers have the ability to be intense and push their limits without sounding whiney. The whole album seems to centre around a sort of sci-fi theme, and even the album art is stylised in the same way, with the photography of the band portraying them as futuristic, almost super-human figures. It's really a great album. It has just the right blend of guitars, rhythm, and dancey electronica. My only complaint rests with the track "Chemistry of a Car Crash." Far too many bands out there have sang about car crashes. It's tired; it really doesn't add anything to the album. Fortunately, the other songs more than make up for it, and I still think it's still a superb record.

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

    5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

    5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Very solid album.......2006-08-03

Dull moments on this album are hard to find. Energetic tracks with good variation. No need to skip tracks - very good from front to back. This is probably a good album for those of you who fancy a good screw now and then. Had it in my car for 3 days and the songs just get better. Saw these guys at Coachella and they are even better live. The end.

4 out of 5 stars lead in, my darlings.......2006-03-24

i must from the off endevor to admit, that quite simply as you like, i like the infadels.

they are hip. achingly so, in places. they strut and bang and yell 'whummp' and then have a fast bit of guitar or whatever. they sound as if they were dreamed up in a Rough Trade marketing guys sticky bed sheets. or in other words, They Are Good.

the record stomps and drags you through it, it passes you by so quickly you don't notice the time past- your head full of the gory details, like driving past a nasty car smash at 90mph on a freeway, and you swear that you saw a half dead guy trying to pull his decapitated girls freinds body out of their nissan mirca's burning, record, and he's bleeding everywhere, and all you can think about is if you can stop and go back and get a better look, 'cause like its much more real than the movies and then you're trying to work out if you do a U'ie at the next turn off, will you be back in time to see more or will the medics be there, not that they should bother, just send a meat truck, there all for hell any way but by the time you've thought of it all you're gone, parked up outside your house, your flies unbuttoned as you watch it all again from the eye in the sky on channel 4 news. or whatever.

they sound like the buzzcocks or talking heads maybe. or prehaps they are closer to any art school band anywhere in the world, posing, playing overly complicated nonsence, whilst there 'lead' "singer" yelps on as he was a man in his 40's doing an impression of a pre-teen doing an impression of interpol. lazy and definetly plagerising in places.

we are not the infadels, no you're not. you're possibly the most entertaining and least enjoyable band this year

5 out of 5 stars Infadels - We Are Not The Infadels.......2006-02-10

Stop searching for indie bands. They are the definitive one.
Ten amazing songs, from electro-pop to punk-rock, and they all deserve an hundred listenings. The sound is great, the arrangements are really fine and lyrics are clever... "Jagger '67", which is supposed to be the main single, is an explosion of synths, drums, guitars but the album gives also moments of relaxed high-quality ballads like "Murder that sound".
Let's bet on this group as the main indie-deal of the year... At least!

3 out of 5 stars An odd turn for the band, and they mostly pull it off .......2007-07-06

The Chem Bros seem to be developing a wry sense of humor with several tracks here. The Salmon song is intentionally silly but I have to confess I've hummed along to it a few times. A lot of people are gonna hate that track so I have to wonder why its there at all. Several tracks are also digital throwbacks to "simpler" 80's beats and that is not neccessarily a bad thing. The band is channeling early Prince on at least 2 of the tracks. Is it worth buying? That's a hard question because half of the tracks arent really memorable. Best to check out the audio previews of the tracks before you buy. I've always been a fan of the band but they seem a bit rudderless the last several CD's.

4 out of 5 stars Modern Midnight album.......2007-07-04

I have no idea what the Chemical Brothers are doing in "We Are The Night."

Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. Though some of their songs simply don't mesh together well, the British electronic duo do a pretty fair job with their grimy acid beats and crazy acid-alien-spy style. And it's worth the price just to hear their delicious collaborations with Midlake and the Klaxons.

It opens with a strange rumbling grunting sound, like a robot hellhound sniffing out a trail. Then we get some mournful voices telling us that "there's no path to follow."

Oh, forget that. The action begins in the spaceship hums, electronic twiddlings (as if from a control panel), and a heavy driving beat that blossoms into a solid, danceable tune speckled with samples. It ends up sounding like James Bond on acid, and no, that is not a bad thing at all.

From there, the Chemical Brothers collaborate with the Klaxons in the eerie, clattery "All Rights Reserved," and launch into a swirl of equally energetic songs: tribal electrobeats, retro fuzz pop, eruptions of tornado synth in fun electropop, tightly woven beats, and a dense weaving of keyboard and ringing guitar. It finishes on a high note with "The Pills Won't Help You Know," a collaboration with Midlake -- a dreamy, hazy, fuzzy, sunny little tune that is drowsily winning.

In a nutshell, "We Are the Night" sounds like the soundtrack to a psychedelic spy caper, with a few aliens thrown in for good measure. The Chemical Brothers has their lax moments -- "The Salmon Dance" with Fatlip is a tumble down the stairs -- but the majority of the songs achieve just what they're meant to.

There's some drum machines and electric guitars cycling in there. But most of it is some really earthy acid beats -- sharp and flexible, synth lashings, and a few that are soft little stretches of gentle, pastoral tinkliness. They also weave some songs with sci-fi-ish samples, like what sounds like alarms going off, and a spaceship landing.

And they avoid the typical techno trap of just taking a beat and repeating it endlessly. To keep the dancefloor beats and tribal stuff from sounding like your average boring techno, they twist it into ripples, trickles, fuzz, static squeals and some brilliantly eerie vocals ("We are the nighttime/we are the bright eyes/we are the right time...").

If there's a real problem with "We Are the Night," it's that the album isn't very cohesive. Several of the songs have the same feel, but most of the collaborations don't fit in with the pure Chemical Brothers stuff. I'm the first to admit a deep love for "The Pills Won't Help You Know," but it doesn't fit.

The Chemical Brothers trip over their own feet occasionally, but despite some songs not fitting in, it still is a pretty decent electronic album. Do it again.

1 out of 5 stars Worst Paul Van Dyk production.......2005-06-05

I hate to be negative when discussing PVD as i have a lot of respect for the guy both as a DJ and as a producer. I have enjoyed some superb nights in clubs where he was DJ-ing and i have some serious classic tunes of his in my collection... Forbidden Fruit, Perfect Day, How Much Can You Take, Avenue etc.
I don't wish to offend anyone who likes this tune but it is simply rubbish. The vocal is cheesy but the tune itself is very poor also. The Out There and Back album was disappointing compared to Seven Ways but still contained some great moments ( The Love from Above, Avenue, Travelling, Another Way, The Riddle) but i can't fathom what PVD with his underground roots was thinking when he produced this. A blemish on the cv of a normally exceptional artist

5 out of 5 stars My favorite PVD song.......2004-01-22

Next to George Acosta and DJ Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk is another favorite trance dj of mine. Unlike Paul Oakenfold, PVD hasn't sold his soul to corporate America and started pandering to pop music by selling his songs to be used in commercials. PVD has always mainted his integrity by focusing mostly on original songs. "Out There and Back" is my personal favorite PVD album. The album is a reminder of what I love about trance music, plus Sarah Cracknell from Saint Etienne sings on a couple of tracks. Of all the songs on "Out There and Back", "We Are Alive" is my very, very favorite song on the album however the version on that cd doesn't contain much vocals, just on the chorus. That is why I had to have the remix single for "We Are Alive". It includes the versions with Jennifer Brown singing through out the entire song. For the most part, all the remixes were good with the exception of the DJ Icey's Artic Bass Mix. I am not a fan of DJ Icey's work so that is why I don't care for that mix. Otherwise, the other mixes are great especially the Vandit Vocal Mix which is the remix of the full on vocal version of the song. Jennifer Brown reminds me of Jan Johnston with her pretty vocals. The melodies are addictive as are the beats. Excellent song overall. This is how trance should sound like.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Van Dyks second single from Out There and Back.......2003-11-18

This is a great song that has many different versions for those that enjoy remixes of a good song. All the remixes are some what different and that is what makes this CD single great. This Cd single is a must for any PVD fan or dance music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Paul Van Dyks first single from Out There and Back.......2003-11-18

3 out of 5 stars Get the Jennifer Brown single instead.......2002-01-03

This song was done before as Jennifer Brown's "Alive." The original Paul Van Dyke version of this song is pretty sanitary compared to the previous release. Fans of this song should definately check out the Bleachin Club Mix of "Alive" as it is more rockin' than PVD's take.

5 out of 5 stars "Easy Listening" Trance.......2007-01-03

I first heard this album on Paul van Dyk's Soundgarden show. I was pretty happy with the samples he played and decided to take a look myself. Some people may call the content "cheesy". I think that it's just some easy listening trance. The included bonus CD has some ok-quality remixes of some classic and newer tracks.

I would certainly recommend this album as an easy entry into electronic dance music. Certainly the tracks are of much higher quality that your DJ Sammy or other junk production. I am looking forward to getting Kyau & Alberts' next album.

    4 out of 5 stars Terrific Trance.......2006-10-23

Im more about beauty than speed when it comes to trance. I tend to listen for emotion, melody, and creativity over anything else. "Here We Are Now" is my kind of trance. I consider it the kind of music that soothes the heart and can put a smile on your face. It is an album that follows the direction of Tiesto, Corsten, and Buuren very closely. That may be why you've heard "Falling Anywhere", "Velvet Morning", and "Made of Sun" before you've decided on this album. These tracks have been very useful in a plethra of known albums, and with plenty of good reason. Kyau and Albert create fascinating music embodied in beautiful and energetic rhythm. It is music that will touch you, and for any electronica lover I would highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Israely trance scene.......2005-11-29

I can say only two words for Kyau ans Albert: Guys did GREAT JOB!!!! Keep it on!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Creative artist album and good assortment of unmixed anthems to go with it!.......2005-10-04

"Here We Are Now" is a definite album that most trance fans will not want to miss out on. It features all of the hits thus far from the German duo, including Velvet Morning, Falling Anywhere and Made of Sun. The list does not stop there though, and as the listener progresses through the CD, they will begin to hear tracks that have potential not only as remixes, but as hits on their own. True, some of the tracks on Here We Are Now are a little too mellow to be deemed worthy of being club/radio hits, but they do indeed have their creative flair. The song structuring is a little untraditional in places, but it never does leave the realm of trance. Another plus is that the songs are a little mixed on the vocals, so the listener will be expecting to hear all female songs after the first one, but if they have not heard Velvet Morning, they are going to be in for a surprise.

The second disk of the album is arguably where the real treat begins. This bonus disk is an assortment of remixes of the songs on the album, plus a few hits by other groups that Kyau vs. Albert have remixed! This is a great find for fans who like to mix their own DJ comps, because all of the songs are completely unmixed and in their full form. Some of the remixes are also arguably better than the album versions (especially if you are a fan of the type of trance that makes you get up and move.)

Here We Are Now is a definite recommend for anyone seeking essential trance albums for 2005. While it does lose a star due to not having one remix of Velvet Morning (the Alto remix) and due to having some mellowness on certain tracks, it still stands out among the assortment of electronic artist albums floating around.

5 out of 5 stars Getting it "Twisted".......2002-08-04

This is, quite simply, one of the very best compilations I've purchased. Virtually everything I like about dance music can be found on this double-disc compilation of the best club anthems from the Twisted label. We have hard-hitting house, thumping tribal beats, neo-disco, soulful vocals, and a dash of energy. The first disc is mainly tribal house; the best of the bunch is the stomping "New Creation" by Dolls Head (remixed by Barry Harris of Thunderpuss), the remix of "Body" by Funky Green Dogs, and Danny Tenaglia's "Music is the Answer" and "Elements." Disc Two is more house-oriented with less tribal and more soulful vocals. "Celeda" gets the mood right with "Happy," Prince Quick Mix's "Running Things," and a Club 69 remix of the Soft Cell classic "Tainted Love," which is the disc's sole non-house cut. For those who like a little soulful flava in their house, you have the last three cuts: "African Dream" from USL, "Believe" from The Timewriter, and club diva Suzanne Palmer on "It's My Life," the disc's closer. For your money, you get a serious bang for your buck, as this is a double disc collection of high quality material. Let these grooves "twist" you, and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars And the winner is?!.......1999-10-04

A tie. The consumer and TWISTED!!! The consumer wins because this is easily the best release from TWISTED. Disc 1 contains 15 tracks while disc 2 contains 13. Unlike most compilation discs every one of these songs is perfectly mixed and not one "DUD" on this release, leaving you wanting more.TWISTED wins by releasing this compilation as we near 2000, wondering "CAN THIS BE TOPPED". MY money says that they will!!!!! Buy this immediatly, you won't be sorry! We await Rob Di Stefano's next move.

5 out of 5 stars THIS DOUBLE CD SET IS AMAZING!!!!!.......1999-10-02

Deep tribal grooves, sexy percussion, and moments of suspense and thrilling climaxes are what make this 2-CD set HOT!! Twisted put a lot of time into releasing this and it shows...from the detailed cd booklet with pictures of rare promos and album covers along with shots of the Twisted artists to the way the songs flow together with perfect timing of build-ups and climaxes! Any Twisted house head should do anything to get ahold of this incredible cd-set because there are 19 previously unreleased songs on here and some classics twisted into something new and creative! This is a GREAT ALBUM from the first eerie bells of "Hell's Bells" all the way to the dramatic soaring vocals of "It's My Life" and a true taste of the dark, drama-filled sounds of TWISTED!!

    5 out of 5 stars WORTH it.......1999-09-30

You don't want to pass up this double CD. If you are familiar with the Twisted label, or with New York house music, expect to hear the best of the best when you load this CD. Even the songs that collectors might already have ("Elements" by Danny Tenaglia or "Body" by Funky Green Dogs, for example) have been significantly remixed and are worth the repeat purchase. But the vast majority of the tracks on both CDs are previously unreleased, and are exquisitely deep and funky.

5 out of 5 stars Where did this come from? .......2006-12-16

I have to admit, my interest in all things techno has waned a bit in the last few years. I rarely go to clubs anymore, and I pretty much never buy records...it just seemed like it was all the same ideas, the same sounds, the same basslines, repeated ad infinitum. So I was more than pleasantly surprised when I heard We Are Monster.

The ten tracks on this release are more like actual songs, each one individual and unique, yet adding up to a coherent and consistent whole. And even though Isolee gained a reputation for producing what is termed "microhouse"- tracks that move along at midtempo, change subtlely and are all small gestures- that is only a starting point here. He throws in elements of dub, grime, electro, techno, even an acoustic guitar, yet it never feels like a stretch, it all comes together effortlessly. No easy task, yet one Isolee pulls off incredibly well.

Constantly surprising and always enjoyable, We Are Monster reminds me why I got into this music in the first place, and why, all these years later, I keep coming back.
