Amazon.com essential recording

The King of Brooklyn, Biggie Smalls, busted through with an instant hip-hop classic on his first album, Ready to Die, but he outdid even his standard on Life After Death, an audible, posthumous autobiography about the life of the former dope dealer. The 2 CD set revels in death, especially on "Niggaz Bleed," "Somebody's Gotta Die," and "You're Nobody ('Til Somebody Kills You)," but it's painfully clear that this chestnut-cheeked, fun-loving father of two wanted to see his kids grow up on "Sky Is the Limit" and "Miss U," both of which point to the future. The album also serves as a testament to Biggie's flexibility: he adopts Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's rapid rhyme flow and Midwestern beats when they guest on "Notorious Thugs," he positively bounces on both "Mo Money Mo Problems" and "Going Back to Cali" (guesting Eazy Mo Bee), and even kicks it Wu-Tang style when RZA shows up for "Long Kiss Goodnight." --Asondra R. 5 out of 5 stars Biggy at His Prime.......2007-07-11

The Notorious B.I.G. was a lyrical genius and he showed it on Life After Death. This is the greatest rap double album ever. Biggy mastered his flow and showed his versitility on this album. He told stories, gave us party records, got serious, clowned around, rapped over west coast beats, rhymed fast, and gave us hard core street records. This is the definition of a complete album. Ready to Die was a classic and Biggy took it to another level on this album.

He left the world with his best work before he passed. Biggy had a great ability to make his lyrics very visual. Stories like "Somebody Gots to Die", "Niggas Bleed" and "I Got A Story to Tell" are so good that you can visualize his every word. Biggy had the East Coast on lock and no one in the game could touch him in wordplay. I can not even sit here and start to name the best songs because there were too many.

Biggy dropped two classic albums and was killed while he was still on top. He never lost his spot. Life After Death raised the bar for the game. I would have loved to see B.I.G. grow as an artist and make new music after this record. Unfortunately, his time was cut short, but he left us with a gem that shows his amazing talent....

5 out of 5 stars Biggie's best work!.......2007-07-05

The first album was pretty tight, but this title cd album is Biggie's best work. And even if he was still alive, i'm not so sure that he could really top this one. It's a collector's item.

5 out of 5 stars The greatest album ever released by Biggie & BadBoy Records........2006-12-01

Life After shows Biggie's growth as an artist and man. The storytelling is very cinematic and compelling. This is really a movie on wax for real. The paranoia is also raised on here and for good reason since Biggie spent 1996 fending off Pac's accusations and insults. In short, Biggie was a naturally gifted, personable, smart dude that's greatly missed.

4 out of 5 stars Good!! But Nothing Ground Breaking.......2006-11-28

Biggie is good rapper no doubt about it, but th G.O.A.T not even close. People in my school get angry if you don't worship this guy or Tupac. I just tell them to listen to Gza,Ghostface,Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap, Az,Nas,Big L Rakim and Alice Cooper. They realize just because the media doesn't big these other rappers up doesn't their aren't some of the best. Also Big Pun would Lyrically destroy Biggie. The guy is still good just not the best.

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2006-11-25

Before I start I need to get something straight

Me Against The World > Ready To Die

Life After Death > All Eyez On Me

The Don Killuminati > Life After Death

Even though Tupac is my favourite I have to admit that this certainly beat All Eyez On Me. That album was classic as hell but this album is better. More interesting, Biggie tells some great stories. This album is loaded with classics such as What's Beef, Hypnotize, N*ggaz Bleed, Notrious Thugs, Last Day, Mo Money Mo Problems and Missin You. Nearly all the tracks are at least good (its certainly got its share of filler)(Playa Hater (horrible singing experiment), Ten Crack Commandments (just not feelin it) and a few more) I think it would win first place for double disc rap album with All Eyez On Me winning second. Any other double discs would probably have about 5 good tracks and filler for the rest. This ain't like that. It was such a pity that Biggie died so early as he only got to make 2 albums, if he had just lived a few years longer, you could have only imagined what other gems he could have come out with. This is definitely a release rap fans need to own.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

5 out of 5 stars Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

4 out of 5 stars Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Grunge angst got old. We wanted to have fun. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy was there, ready with serviceable, pumped-up swing. Their music is straight, uptempo, dance floor jazz. There's nothing particularly original going on, but the sleazy horns and snappy arrangements get the job done. There's nothing campy or tongue-in-cheek either; the music just barrels ahead...like good rock & roll. --Steve Tignor

this has to be my favorite bbvd cd. great to blast in the car for any ride and to dance to.

5 out of 5 stars Great Stuff.......2007-02-03

We used to see these guys play on the Nashville club circuit in the late 1990s, and bought the CD at that time. the energy of their live performances comes through on this New Orleans-style jazz compilation. From the back beat to the great rhythms, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy will have you snapping your fingers, tapping your toes, and wishing you had more of their stuff. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Where did these guys come from?!.......2006-03-01

Wow! If you would like a change in pace from hiphop or rock and want to be transported back in time, check out these guys! This group creates a wonderful mix of New Orleans jazz, swing, and modern story lyrics. I only wish we could have some clubs open up in our downtowns with this sound. This group will make you move and you'll be "swinging" before you notice what's happening.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-02-26

With bands like "Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy" they just don't get better than this. If you want to get in a good mood, lose weight, (I did. I lost 25 pounds with this band)or just feel good, this is the music to buy!!!

I went to the concert and enjoyed the music sooo much that I decided to buy the CD. My family and I absolutely love it. All of the music is so upbeat it just makes you want to dance.

2 out of 5 stars Not My Style.......2007-05-11

This CD has a lot of good songs on it, but it just too bland for our taste. We prefer Western music to sound as though genuine cowboys are singing it - not a fancy chorus!

5 out of 5 stars Rockin' Western Collection.......2006-08-28

For anyone who likes movie/tv music from westerns should purchase this CD. What a wonderful collection of both film and tv with great renditions of each piece. I'm about to purchase Vol. 1 to complete my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Hard to Find Great Western Themes .......2006-03-16

This CD has a number of great western themes that are not in some of the standard lists. For example it includes "The Hallejuah Trail", "Blazing Saddles", and "Giant". This CD also has what I consider the true theme of "The Comancheros". I have been disappointed with some other CDs I have purchased listing "The Comancheros" which had a song rather than this theme. Many of the tracks on this two disk CD go beyond the main theme music and are actually suites. The "Big Country" and "How the West Was Won" are just a couple of examples. It may be a little more expense than some CDs, but not bad for a two disk set. I am really happy with my purchase.

4 out of 5 stars Western Music.......2005-07-29

I enjoy this CD. It has many familiar melodies. Good background for reading, nice to listen while driving. It is also the only CD I've ever found that has the great theme from the movie "Giant."

5 out of 5 stars A great follow-up.......2003-08-29

This is the second collection by SilvaScreen, who are also responsible for "The Wild West: The Essential Western Film Music Collection" (see my review). And it's just as good as the first. There are themes in here that everyone will recognize ("Bonanza," "A Fistful of Dollars"), themes that may not be so familiar ("Duel in the Sun," "The Hanging Tree," the lively "Blazing Saddles"), and even themes you may not associate with Westerns at all ("The Friendly Persuasion"). And no duplication either: when this disc includes a piece from one of the same sources covered in its predecessor, it's a different piece. One great treat: the full lyrics to "Gunfight at OK Corral," which I've never heard outside the soundtrack of the movie itself. The arrangement from "Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid" includes not only the familiar song "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" but an overview of the music--seguing almost seamlessly into Bernstein's magnificent "The Comancheros," a rare find indeed. An expensive item, but if you love Western film music, well worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Go Daddy Go!.......2007-01-24

I first saw Big Bad Voodoo Daddy in the movie, The Swingers, some years ago, and was curious to hear more as Swing dancing is as big as ever these days. Big Daddy pretty much sticks to the grooves, a kind of "dancabilly" that is even more infectious in this live album than on previous studio albums. For swing dancers, this is a modern take on the classic rhythms of the 40s with some pretty jazzy improvisations. Big Daddy can play and they have a lot of fun with the music, showing a tremendous amount of versatility as well as humor on these recordings. The added DVD doubles the pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars voodoo magic.......2007-01-17

Wonderful music! Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is a class act, whose energy and love of music is apparent not only in the sound, but in the enclosed video of one of their concerts. Their sound is catchy and original, while also being reminiscent of a bygone era.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.......2006-08-18

I love this album!!!!! Listening to this album makes you feel like you are right there at the show. The musical arrangements are great, that big band swing sound is present and the sense of humor of the bandmates is evident. You don't see any better than this is music today.

5 out of 5 stars Big Bad Voodoo Daddy = BIG FUN.......2006-06-25

The first word that comes to mind when I think of BBVD is FUN.

I first heard this band on the radio. I was hooked immediately...and so were my wife and children. I bought two of their CDs from Amazon.com: Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Save My Soul. And we've been listening to --and singing along with-- them ever since.

My toddlers tend to sing BBVD songs in public...without inhibition! It's only slightly embarrasing to stroll the grocery store with three kids screaming out the lyrics to Go Daddy-O. But I really can't blame them. The music is contagious!

Just last week, my wife and I caught BBVD live at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible performance that kept the crowd smiling. We had so much FUN! BBVD = FUN! There is no other way to say it.

I admit that I was hesitant to purchase this CD / DVD at first, since I already owned most of the songs. But, after seeing them live, I bought this CD the very next day...and we love it.

There is just something about a live performance, even when you're listening to a recorded "live" performance. On stage, BBVD generates some serious energy, and you can't help but be pulled right into it.

The sound quality on both the CD and the bonus DVD is excellent, and the video on the DVD is crystal clear. As a matter of fact, the DVD provides a better view of the band than the one I had "live" at the House of Blues. The music content on both the CD and DVD is the same, though the DVD has extra features like a short film on the band's beginnings. For a two-disc set, the price can't be beat.

If you are into swing, or just need a good dose of happy music, treat yourself to this Live performance of the Kings of Swing. Their fun music can't be beat!

5 out of 5 stars Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ROCKS!!.......2006-02-24

If you like swing or big band music, you will like this CD. The music is upbeat and makes you want to dance. The bonus DVD of their concert is fabulous. If you are looking for one swing/big band music CD/DVD, you can't go wrong with this one.

Wide-ranging hipster credentials in hand--BBVD got its name from late blues guitarist Albert Collins--the seven-piece outfit's sound is totally competent and no more. Pushing forward deliberately, but with little sense of the swing that's their supposed trademark, the bland-voiced Morris and band remain lukewarm through This Beautiful Life's dozen cuts. Paying tribute to Sinatra with a closing "Ol' MacDonald" is a nice touch, but not as nice as the real thing is. (Hint: It's on Sinatra's Swingin' Session!!!) --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Swing music to dance to.......2007-01-03

I especially like the last song of this CD. All the other songs have a typical swing dance beat to it.

4 out of 5 stars More great Jazz.......2006-08-17

This was the second CD that I bought after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, and even though it perhaps is not my type of music, I thought it was great to listen to. It really rocks and it has to move you. I really enjoy music that has a beat to it. I think it opened up a new type of music for me. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this.......2005-03-30

This is definitely one of the best swing cds I've ever listened to. The music has a lot of variety, from the very brassy and bright to the softer and more subtle.

This cd leaves their first cd in the dust. A definite must for anyone interested in Swing.

5 out of 5 stars Kings of Swing!.......2005-03-29

If you're a "Swingster" this is one CD you must have in your collection. This is hot, hot, hot! You can't just sit and listen to this one . . . it is so contagious that you'll come down with a major case of the jitterbug and you'll be swingin' all over the room before you can say "Cab Calloway!" The only thing better is seeing these guys in person! Top Drawer for Sure!!!

4 out of 5 stars good cd, more evolved sound.......2004-10-22

the title says it all. the cd is about life, the ups and downs, and everything inbetween. It is a good cd, but doesnt have quite as many super stong songs as Americana Deluxe. You have to be in the mood to listen to this cd, but all the songs are still good, just not something i pop in the cd player just for background music. still recomended tho

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy did more than any other band to fuel the sing revival of the '90s, due largely to the group's appearance in the 1996 film Swingers. Since then, the craze has waned, although you couldn't tell it by BBVD. If anything, the combo has approaches their fifth album with more gusto and verve than ever, infusing their old-school jive and greasy horns with a New Orleans sensibility and panache and, in the process, creating their strongest album yet. Although their songs sound like they were lifted right out of the Zoot-suited '40s, the band writes all their own material, taking swing into a raw and modern direction. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy by rights will still be here when the next wave of swing arrives. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars Great type of Jazz........2006-08-17

Growing up in the 50s is what I listen to, but after seeing a live show of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, I bought a CD at the show. After listening to the CD, I bought two more CDs at Amazon.com. The music has a real beat to it, and you can't help but move some with the music. It really rocks. Great stuff.

5 out of 5 stars A 5 star treat indeed that is mmm delish.......2006-07-26

This cd is delightful from beginning to end, full of suprises, swing, New Orleans jazzy jump blues ,and smokey infectious vocals that are smouldering hot. Red hot horn riffs that remind one of Bourbon street. Hot tempos and exotic swinging rhythms. Let this cd voodoo your voodoo.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, soulful, carefree...like the spirit of New Orleans.......2006-07-04

I can't compliment this band enough. The contagiuos beat and happy rhythms of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy are contagious... Their music makes you want to dance!

I saw them perform recently at the House of Blues in New Orleans. It was an incredible show. Just prior to singing the title track of this CD, Save My Soul, lead singer Scotty Morris told the crowd that he had written the song 14 years ago. He felt he owed a debt of gratitude to the musical tradition of New Orleans. But now, post-Katrina, the song carries more meaning for him and for all who love N'Awlins.

Save My Soul is a fun, soulful, and carefree CD. Buy it. Enjoy it. Share it with those you love.

Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best!.......2005-01-20

I own three of BBVD's CDs and this one is the best. You just have to move those feet! I just love these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Hear Oh Yeah in the PC Game Casino Empire!.......2004-10-14

I found this out accidentally! The PC game, Sierra's Casino Empire, which was released in 2000, uses an early version of the song, "Oh Yeah" as background music. I thought it was just a really cool song in a PC game (and, er, the demo, at that!) when I heard it again during the October 11, 2004 episode of the NBC TV show, LAS VEGAS. It made me more curious about the song, so I looked up the lyrics, and found that the song was actually by this truly cool band. Get the CD, buy the PC game!

5 out of 5 stars Great reggae album.......2006-03-20

"Bad Boys" is an old favorite of mine. Most of you are familiar with the title track theme from "Cops." But the entire album is great and I don't skip any song.

1 out of 5 stars SELL OUT TO THE ENTIRE GENRE' OF REGGAE MUSIC.......2006-02-04

Listen y'all, I don't know about you, but I HAVE NO INTENTION WHATSOEVER of

LISTENING TO OR SUPPORTING A REGGAE BAND THAT SELLS THEIR MUSIC (or should

I say, muzak?) TO THE COPS TV show. The hell with this band. I love reggae,

and I realize that cops are an important part of our society and culture

(they keep the peace), BUT REGGAE AND COPS?

Take a very long walk off of a short pier boys.

Inner Circle are sell outs! I feel that you, the curious and not so

knowledgable reggae purveyor, should disregard all of these five star

reviews of this band, because they are written by folks that have no

interest in true reggae, and have no clue what it is about! Call me a

reggae snob if you will, but I truly think that if you want to check out

reggae you should close this page and do a google search on " LISTMANIA,

crucial reggae". Do the work and start at a more real place. A couple of suggestion are The Congos 'Heart of the Congos', anything by Israel Vibrations, The Abyssinians, Lee Scratch Perry,...But this band will not satisfy, they are designed to be listened to by fools. Oh, wait, I'm sorry, I had no... I am sooo Embarrassed.

Really, in years to come you will be glad.

When I am at my local used CD store, I offer to smash their extra copies

(they have many) of this album for them, they think I'm kidding - I'm not.

This band is a joke.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you so much quick shipping.......2004-04-29

Thank you so much quick shipping. It is GREAT job !!!!....
I enjoy it....

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2003-11-21

I hate to dance, and I hate any type of music besides rock, and some rap, but this is unbeliveable.Hot beats, great rhymes, etc. just make this a great cd. Inner circle is a great SKA band, a type of music I like. I heard "Sweat", and i was just shocked, because i was singing with the song, vibing with the bass, and just feeling the music. The most popular song on this cd, is probable "Bad Boys", because it is the theme song for COPS, a great show. And that song is also a great reason to buy this cd.
Listen to the samples of "Sweat" and "Bad Boys", if you DONT like those songs, i guarantee you that you wont like this cd. But the majority of all us people, HAVE to like those songs. Another thing, why the hell isnt "Sweat" and "Bad Boys" on Inner circles Greatest Hits??? Very shocking, 'cause "Sweat", to this day, is still playing on the radio.
But if Inner Circle has me as a fan, it HAS TO BE GOOD. I like Green day, Dead Kennedys, Blink 182, and Sublime, etc., so Inner Circle isn't really in the same area as these bands, so they really stand out. And for the price, its a great buy.
Peace out~laterz

4 out of 5 stars have the cops in your room with this great cd.......2001-04-02

Inner circle's name might not be that familiar but the track bad boys has been listed to by almost everybody in the united states from the hit tv show cops. This CD contains no offensive language, but for some parent the content in the song might not be the best for YOUNG children to listen to for some (when I got the CD I was 6) it might be a little bit frightening if you listen to the lyrics closely, but overall the cd is appropriate. I suggest that you but the CD.

A reminder that the post-Clash Mick Jones once had something exciting to say about the gray area between rock and dance/hip-hop. Initial fare like "E=MC2" and "C'Mon Every Beatbox" swings loose and wild, while such early '90s tracks as "The Globe" and "Rush" benefit from a tighter reign. A definitive collection. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Spread The News The Maestros Back.......2006-12-04

From the acrimonious breakup of The Clash - though Joe Strummer later colllaborated with Big Audio Dynamite - came several bands with varying sound from Mick Jones. The group has been known as Big Audio Dynmaite, Big Audio Dynamite II and Big Audio due to the changes in band personnel and approaches to music.

With elements of the sound he refined as guitarist/vocalist in "The Only Band That Matters," Jones delivers lyrics that are sometimes comparable with the snapshot mosaics of John Dos Passos in his classic USA Trilogy and the spoken performances by Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg. Many of the earlier songs intertwine lyrics with cuts from TV shows, movies and music.

Jones especially shows his brilliance in the still politically timely The Bottom Line, guitar-powered E=MC2 and C'mon Every Beat Box. In Sightsee M.C.! and I Turned Out A Punk, Jones pounds away at issues like mindless hate & how many let a musical movement narrow their thinking to extreme levels of nothingness.

The band somewhat devolved from a post-punk dance/rock to a heavier sound comparable with The Clash, and then - with the addition of the legendary Ranking Roger - began to explore the ingredients that made ska essential and timeless.

Planet BAD is a great sampler and shows that a greatest hits package is only as good as the band whose name appears on the cover.

1 out of 5 stars Got to be one of the Worst Bands I heard.......2006-10-02

I was forced to listen to this band because everytime I got into a friend's car that loved this band had it blasting in his car. I couldn't stand that ridiculous voice from the lead singer and the band's wacked sound. Don't get me wrong here. I'm not a hater, I love all type of music, from rock, rap, metal, new wave, pop, jazz, freesyle, opera, classical, country, R&B, blue grass, gospel, nu metal, industrial, techno, to the homeless guy on the boardwalk beating on pots and pans for a nickel. I LOVE music. But....WHAT THE HELL DO YOU FIND IN THIS BAND????? THEY SUCKED!!!! BAD....LY!!

4 out of 5 stars This collection is dynamite........2006-09-13

This obviously works well for someones first or only B.A.D. album, which of course is the intent. Everything that any casual fan might know is present. There's no doubt that the biggest hits here are "Rush" and especially "The Globe", but the rest is good too. Minus those two songs, the strongest stuff is the first 4-5 tracks. All are sample-filled and hit-worthy. The rest is decent and fun, which I think sums up the band as a whole also. Truth be known, if all you know is "Rush" and "The Globe", you may just want to get "The Globe" album. It has both hit songs and is solid front to back with killer tunes. Can't go wrong here though.

5 out of 5 stars Fantasic Band!.......2006-02-07

This compilation covers most of the best BAD songs, not that you wouldn't want to collect the individual albums, but if you just have a casual interest then you can't go wrong here.

Nearly all the songs still sound innovative and enjoyable. I personally don't think they sound "dated" at all. And even if they did, so what? This type of music still towers over the dumbed down, depressing, cookie cutter garbage that dominates the pop charts today. And what about the lyrics? I think BAD's lyrics are some of the funniest, most clever I've heard. You just don't find any other band quite like them when it comes to song material.

Even if you don't remember BAD from the eighties and nineties, if you give this CD a chance to let it grow on you, you won't regret it. Listen to this, and then turn on the radio and compare it to the hip-hop and teeny bopper regurgitated pap pushed on the masses today. I know you'll find BAD still sound refreshing and catchy with memorable lyrics.

4 out of 5 stars Songs are good, if sounding a bit dated.......2005-04-12

Big Audio Dynamite is one of those bands that did not achieve major crossover success, despite the fact that they appealed to so many different segments. Their Clash roots lent them punk and indie credibility. They also appealed to those who liked the new wave/synth bands of the 80's. Finally, their music was embraced by the dance community and was a staple of early 90's club play.

This CD assembles some of those excellent tracks, including their 2 biggest hits: "Rush" and "The Globe". But many other songs are good as well including "C'mon Every Beatbox" and "I Turned out a Punk". The one thing that hampers the songs and makes them seem somewhat dated is the often heavy use of sampling and sound bytes. I know sampling still goes on today, but I think it is more subtle now than it was then. If anything turns people off on this CD, I would say it is the fact that almost every track uses some kind of sound byte. The way these sound bytes have been used are often clever, but the songs stand up on their own and the sound bytes are not necessary. Recommended.
