Smile Mix, Vol. 4 by DJ Lars

Some may recognize Lars Schlichting's chiseled face on the back of the liner notes as that of the German DJ from the London setting of MTV's Real World. Don't hold that against him. DJ Lars's mix CD for the Sm:)e Sessions series is an all-house-all-the-time event that will make you dance until the soles of your shoes melt. Emceed on the first track by a super-sub voice introducing "Five thousand watts of intergalactic bass funk," the album warms up with a furious hi-hat and bongos that pass off hot-potato rhythms and the promised funk bass running full-tilt. Lars's club experience serves him well, each track lending momentum to the next, like the rubber band of an adrenaline-powered slingshot, pulling back in quivering anticipation of the object it's about to hurl through the air. Glimmering trance and buzzing acid-house moments add diverse pacing and mood to the disc, so the vibe never fades or becomes predictable. In the age of techno-for-headphones, meandering trip-hop, and commercialized big-beat, this album is an offering for dedicated clubbers only. Rave on. --Beth Massa
