4 out of 5 stars Electronica 101?.......2003-07-07

Obviously these 16 songs aren't all you need to know about electronica. I could think of another 16 right off the top of my head. BUT, this all good, and one of the better collections to come out of 1997. You got your big names like "Chemical Brothers", "Prodigy", and "Crystal Method", along side some more unknowns which is nice. Three of my favorites are the tracks by "DJ Keoki", "Underworld", and "CJ Bolland". All are excellent. I could have dropped a few of these myself, but I'll let you decide which ones. Though no compilation is gonna be perfect, I would say this is almost there. By not having it, you might find yourself in "Sour Times".

5 out of 5 stars Electronic at it's finest.......2002-10-16

First let me say this - The artists and tracks that Urb magazine has pulled together on this compilation are definitely good music. But I would not call this a definitive guide to electronic music. There are definitely other bands that put out good electronic music at the time. But I guess you can only fit so much good music on an 80 minute CD (76:43 to be exact). That being said, let me give a short run down of the awesome tracks on this CD:
1. The Prodigy - Poison: gets better with age - Prodigy is definitely an essential - powerful lead in track for this CD
2. DJ Icey - Big Ditch: Icey is nice and dicey on this track
3. The Chemical Brothers - Block Rockin Beats: might have been played one too many times but it rocks every time you here it
4. Future Sound of London - We Have Explosive: the original is a good track and this remix is even better
5. Rabbit in the Moon - O.B.E.: This is how down tempo is done
6. Wink - Higher State of Consciousness: I would call it the anthem of acid funk - my favorite track
7. Keoki - Caterpillar: the driving beat and guitar sounds make it worth listening to twice
8. Underworld - Born Slippery: a sticky tune with a beat that makes you move to the music
9. CJ Bolland - Sugar is Sweeter: a very surprising track with some nice lyrics
10. Orbital - The Saint: shows the best side of Orbital with airy flute sounds and a nice bass line
11. The Orb - Toxygene: the comeback of the orb - a good ambient dub
12. Goldie - Inner City Life: good ambience - nice vocals
13. Reprazent - Share The Fall: the airy flute at the beginning leads to a good beat
14. Portishead - Sour Times: another good ambient dub
15. Everything But The Girl - Before Today: the best vocals on the CD with a hint of drum and bass
16. Crystal Method - Busy Child: one of the most played by the crystal method, but makes for a good driving last track

Hope this helps in making your choice to add this CD to your electronic collection. Now that I own Urbal Beats Vol. 1, 2, & 3, I can say that Vol. 1 is probably the best.

5 out of 5 stars Tecno Heaven.......2001-12-24

This CD is a mixture of songs from various artists. If you just started listening to techno, you'll really be hooked after hearing this one. Out of the three urbal beat CD's, This one is the best. Because of all the different artists. Highly reccomended. ENJOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction To Techno/Ambient.......2000-06-01

This CD contains some of my favorite tracks of the genre, including 'Block Rockin Beats', 'Rabbit In The Moon', 'Sour Times' and 'Busy Child'. Probably the best overall mix that I have encountered. A very few of the tracks are a bit grating/overly repetitive, so it doesn't quite deserve five stars (maybe 4 1/2). If you like the samples, you will like the rest of the disc!

5 out of 5 stars Must have!.......2000-04-26

This CD is a definite must have for all fans of techno-- covering all the bases from early to modern trance and break beat, showcasing artists who had not yet broken into the mainstream (like Josh Wink and Roni Size) and uncovering lesser known sides to artists like Prodigy. It is an excellent expose of all the staple artists techno fans of all kinds should take a look at.... don't pass this one up!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Chemical Brothers.......2005-04-05

I have to admit that "Block Rockin' Beats" used to be my least favorite song by The Chemical Brothers. I think it had to do with the hip hop influence that I heard in the song and was hoping for something similiar to "Setting Sun" (my personal favorite Chemical Brothers single). At least when it first came out on the music scene in 1997 I didn't care much for the song, but over the years the song slowly grew on me like a mushroom on a dead log. The lyrics and beats are a bit repetitive but then again the same could be said about The Crystal Method's first album "Vegas". I really dug the Micronauts remix of the song. This version reminded me of something I would hear on Daft Punk from their first album "Homework". "Prescrition Beats" and "Morning Lemon" are killer Chemical Brothers tracks but they can't compete with the micronauts version of "Block Rockin' Beats" to say the very least.

5 out of 5 stars Best Chems single ever!.......2003-11-17

This is simply the Chemical Brothers' finest single of all time among their many landmark releases. It is the only place you will find track 2, 'Prescription Beats', a monster of a track that will leave your body and nerves a mashed mess on the dance floor, maybe their hardest track to date, but still funked up like only the masters can do. Also on track 3 is the awesome funk fest that is 'Morning Lemon', featured on their mix brothers gonna work it out. 'Morning Lemon' is in my opinion their best b-side ever, easily being featured on an album if they chose to. Track 4 is a fun and memorable mix of block rockin by the Micronauts.

5 out of 5 stars ITS AWESOME.......2001-06-26

i can listen to this cd over and over and it just doesnt get boring, how the hell do they do that?

5 out of 5 stars Block rock my mind!.......2000-05-01

Play it on a dancefloor and you can then seperate the musiclovers from the ordinary greyscale.

Although I've listened to this song over 1'000 times, I still get excited like the first time.

If you don't already own it - buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Block rock n beat's.......1999-11-28

As far as I'm concerned, it's one of the best song's ever created!

The song has a hiptonic effect!

This compilation, offered by LA's Urb Magazine, is only deceptively straightforward: it explores the current state of electronica, with dance-floor stalwarts DJ Icey, Uberzone, and Rabbit in the Moon butting heads with neo-pop stars like the Crystal Method, Goldie, and Portishead. One might suspect this to be yet another cash-in "electronica" compilation, a mere licensing scheme intended to separate you from the contents of your wallet. But this ain't no scam: not only is the track selection topnotch and accessible, with an equal dose of well-known hits and underappreciated gems, but the compilation also offers an entertaining education. On disc two, New York's Liquid Todd throws down a set of classics, tracks like Rhythim Is Rhythim's "Strings of Life," Orbital's "Chime," and Dubtribe's "Mother Earth," giving an insight as to what today's electronica stars were hearing whilst in their nappies. As an introduction to the overhyped and confusing world of "electronica," this compilation can't be beat. --Matthew Corwine

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good "past and present" collection........2003-09-08

No collection will ever be perfect, but this does a decent job. The first disc is what's supposed to be hot (in 98). The second is supposed to be some old school classics. Some well known artists are on here like "Prodigy", "Moby", and "Portishead". My favorite thing by far is some of who's sampled on different tracks. Samples from "Bad Brains", "Kate Bush", "The Verve", and the theme from "Twin Peaks". Overall a good comp. The 1st "Urbal Beats" is good too. Pretty much electronica's greatest hits.

4 out of 5 stars This is a pointless review.. for a pointless album.......2001-07-28

First thing about this album that i must mention right off is that the track slection is horrid. If it wasn't trying to be a "definitive guide to electronic music" it probably wouldn't have been so annoying. Really this "urbal beats" series works well if view together, but the track selection seems wrong in the individual sets. This time around the balance is thrown off by adding too much big beats, jungle, and trip hop. Three styles that do come from the same influences. Giving the whole album a lack of diversity. Digital empire 2 does diversity so much better. Another issue is the repetition of the same groups and groups that are seen together all the time.. I mean we have an original prodigy song, a remix of a prodigy song and a song prodigy remixed? is this the "definitve guide to prodigy?" We have a fatboy slim song, and a fat boy slim remix. And the whole first disk breaks down to basically 3 different types of related electronica. giving a very bad "definition" of electronica.

The second disk is a half way decent attempt at mixing alot of classic together, but I am getting somewhat sick of hearing old school electronica thats just doesn't hodl up well over time.

I give the album 4 stars since it does have some decent gems on it. But I highy recomend "digital empire 2" over this compilation if your looking to get schooled on the so called "electronica genre"

3 out of 5 stars A letdown.......2000-06-23

This CD was a big letdown.. it was recommended by the person at the record store, looked good, etc. Basically disc 1 was too jungle for me. There are some tunes that are pretty good, but there are some downright angry-feeling ones as well. Temper-temper gave me a headache and "release YO' Delf"--well, you can figure it.

Disc 2 was much better, but still not enough to compell me to repeat the purchase.

Summary: Disc1 1-2 stars, Disc2 3-4 stars

4 out of 5 stars Disc 2 much better.......2000-06-19

There's another review that sums my sentiments exactly. Disc 1 gets 2-3 stars (kind of like a rap with faster beat) But disc 2 is really good; 5 stars)

4 out of 5 stars Start With The First Volume.......2000-06-01

This set is more uneven than the first Urbal Beats, but it still contains more than a few classics of the genre. The two discs contain a lot of music for a good price--I recommend it as a next step if you like the first volume.

2 out of 5 stars 50,000,000 Headaches Can Be Wrong.......2002-12-18

The only reason I didn't fall asleep during the highly repetitive and washed out tunes of "50,000,000 DJ's ..." is because I was on the road.
Okay, repetition is a trademark of "techno" cd's, but when the sounds repeated combine ancient squaking horns and leaf raking, I find my patience dwindling rapidly. As I bribed my ears to take in the blandness of the energy-less electro sounds, various singers somehow moved along with the music, adding in a mixture of hip-hop rapping, drolling grunge, and spastic turn-table-lapsing word repeating (such as "body movin" repeated possibly 80 million times on one of the tracks).
I regretted almost every second of this album. There are a few moments when a slick beat gets moving with a few complementary zip/zap fillers in the background, and this pulls my rating up for a total of two stars. Unfortunately, the joyous beats often turned sour when rough transitions with awkward, cracked electric-whistles or the ramblings of an anti-groove vocalist came to play. On top of all this, it seems like the whole recording process was filtered through an oversize sea sponge - not much bass depth or tone richness can be detected.
I recommend this CD pack if you have some strong headache medicine.

    5 out of 5 stars Over 2 hours of non-stop joy!.......2001-10-30

This double cd set is a wonderful collection of some of the finest mixes out there. Some of the biggest names are on here including: Fatboy Slim, Moby, The Beastie Boys, and the Chemical Brothers, just to name a few. Listening to this CD is like having a DJ in your own home, with over 2 hours of some of the finest mixes out there. I love this compilation and can't recommend it enough!

    5 out of 5 stars Body Movin'.......2001-10-30

I initially got this CD for the remix of Body Movin' because I'm a big Beastie Boys fan. I'm glad I got this compilation becacause I discovered a lot of good DJs that are on it (DJ Spooky, Leftfield are great!) A friend remommnded it to me and sent me a link to hear some tracks and I was like, OK they sound pretty cool and Body Movin's on - guess I'll give it shot. So I did and it rocks! Been playing it on my car on my way to school everyday and I get lots of good comments on it. Good stuff- I certainly recommend it!

As a part-time amateur DJ myself, I must say this cd is amazing. This cd is superb, whether you want to rock 'da house' or to simply liven up your party at home. With great names such as Asian Dub Foundation (which opens the cd), Primal Scream, BT, Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim (need I say more about these two?), Massive Attack and Moby and his "Natural Blues" hit among others, you are in for a real treat. It's a double cd, so it's double fun. I often find these "djs compilations" rather weak, but this one changed my mind 180 degrees. I'm eagerly waiting for the volume 2.
50,000,000 DJ's surely got it right and now they're 50,000,001!

      3 out of 5 stars Don't get it if you're wanting a single song.......2001-09-28

I bought this album because of the Wise Guys "Start a Commotion" from the Mistubishi commercial with an expectation to have a really cool song. The problem is that there is the "hook" with little other substance to this one track.

On the other hand, for the virtue of the "beat" it is a pretty good album, just not much meat to grab unto.

5 out of 5 stars possible to be the greates techno music ever........1999-05-13

Music that takes you into the move and lets your mide leave the world to cool hip pop techno music.

      5 out of 5 stars breahtaking.......2000-02-29

uberzone has a very unique style because instead of taking electronic equipment and trying to make it NOT sound electronic...he pushes more and more toward a "robotic" sound. hopefully his first full-length will be out soon (he signed to astralwerks)

5 out of 5 stars Please get this track. It speaks for itsself............1999-12-24

Uberzone is amazing. Few titles on the market but the track...this track "The Freaks"....This is the best percussion lick I have come across of this genre hands down. (if you like this check out the track "Pearl's Girl" by Underworld (no kidding).

5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic beats, Surreal synthesis.......1999-10-10

I first heard Uberzone's "The Freaks" and knew I would buy their CD from that one song. You can tell immediately when a group has got it or not. Uberzone has definitely got something. I love African rythms and good synthesis and you can hear these guys are masters in Tribal, Acid and Tryp. Definitely an investment.

5 out of 5 stars groovin beats, amazin scratches.......1999-06-24

These guys are the best in electronica. The album does justice to their amazing live shows. Listen to this EP and you'll go anywhere to see them perform.

      4 out of 5 stars THIS ROCKS!.......1999-02-23
