5 out of 5 stars Derek Webb doesn't disappoint.......2007-06-06

Controversial Christian artist Derek Webb has been sparking controversy ever since he began his solo career in 2003. Formerly part of a the pleasantly upbeat folk rock band, Caedmon's Call, Webb's first solo release was blockaded from most religious radio for it's controversial lyrics. Webb made headlines again with his 2005 release "Mockingbird," by criticizing the church's habit of kowtowing to the Republican party. He also gained national attention by making the entire album available for free download - an opportunity that more than 80,000 listeners took advantage.

Now Webb is back with his May 2007 release entitled, "The Ringing Bell." Once again, it's clear that this exceptionally creative artist is still evolving - and this time it's the music that stands out the most. Known mostly for his folk/Americana stylings, Webb is such a popular acoustic performer that he has been known to tour completely by himself. "The Ringing Bell," however, features Webb fully plugged in, with raucous electric guitars, rollicking riffs, and Beatle-esque arrangements. Once again, Webb doesn't shy away from controversial social issues - note in particular the sarcastic "A Savior on Capital Hill." However, the album also includes a roll your windows down-type love song ("I Wanna Marry You All Over Again") and the hope filled acoustic finale, "This Too Shall Be Made Right." While still pointed - particularly for contemporary Christian fare - the lyrics are more subtle than "Mockingbird."

5 out of 5 stars classic derek webb.......2007-05-17

subtle, overt, catchy, kick-in-the-gut. this album unites the clever lyricism of derek's early days with the gutsy soul-searching of his solo career, wrapped up in a beautifully accessible thirty minutes of classic rock. this album pulls no punches but condemns no one. derek webb addresses the application of Christ, not simply the rhetoric of church.

5 out of 5 stars Derek does it again!.......2007-05-05

I've been a fan of Derek Webb since the early days of Caedmon's Call, and his solo career has taken one unexpected turn after another. With Mockingbird he turned to more political themes, and he joined an exclusive club of Christian artists that make me think I'm not insane after all. So much of the Christian subculture is so ready to tow the conservative Republican party line on every possible issue, and breaking from the agenda is seen as reason enough to question one's faith. I live in a very conservative area, and I know from experience that to speak against the current president and against war is to open yourself up to taunts of heresy from many of your Christian brothers and sisters.

Derek undoubtedly knows this feeling very well. From the very start he's offended people's ideas of what Christianity is with his lyrics that tackle everything from deep theology, social issues, the music industry, and peace. Mockingbird was a very polarizing album, embraced by some and hated by many for his supposed abandoning of "the gospel" in favor of songs about peace and social issues. On The Ringing Bell he takes a step further in this direction, making a virtual concept album about peace. To Derek, peace is not so much just the absence of war, but it is a much more active concept, something we must practice and bring about in every area of our lives. With the exception of a few love songs to his wife, this album is very single minded in its pursuit of peace, and this common theme (along with common musical themes and the amazing artwork) makes this a wonderfully cohesive album that just begs for repeat listens. I pre-ordered and got it the day it was released, and in that time I've probably listened to it over 25 times. It is very short, and the second it finishes I find myself hitting play again. It has yet to get old, and I honestly don't see that happening for a long time.

Musical standouts are the opening two tracks, "The End" and "The Very End," which run together seamlessly and form a beautiful Beatles inspired intro to the retro rock sound that is to follow. "I Don't Want To Fight" has beautiful jangly guitars, "Name" has an original-yet-familiar melody, "Can't Be Without You" is full of ethereal beauty, and "This Too Shall Be Made Right" concludes the album on a sublime acoustic note. There is just the right balance of variety to keep things interesting and allow every song to stand on its own, yet enough similarities to make this a true album and not just a collection of singles. The overall mood is at the same time more upbeat and heavier (not so much as in heavy guitars or beats, but a certain urgency and weight to what he is saying) than his previous work. Lyrically the whole album is pretty strong, although a lot of these lyrics don't look so good on paper and must be heard to get the full effect. If you really want the FULL effect, you would do well to order the special edition that comes with the graphic novel. The drawings take album artwork to a new level in this age of downloading where artwork has become so secondary to many listeners. Reading the lyrics and looking at the panels of the novel while listening to the album helps to create a mood and allow you to dive deeper into the subtleties of each song.

It's a little early to say, and Mockingbird is such a great album, but this might just be Derek's masterpiece. In an amazing musical year like 2007 is shaping up to be, it really means a lot to say that this disc stands head and shoulders above almost everything else that has been released up until now. Any fan of great music, whether they be Christian or not, liberal or conservative, old or young, etc, would do themselves a huge favor by picking up The Ringing Bell.

5 out of 5 stars New Chapter For Webb.......2007-05-02

As one opens the packaging on this album, it becomes clear that this is completely unlike any other Derek Webb album we've held in our hands thus far. First of all, gone is the traditional and simplistic art - it's now almost U2-esque with all the bullseyes and full cover art showing the two men shaking hands with weapons behind their backs. He has also released a graphic novel to go along with "The Ringing Bell," much like U2 did with "How To Dismatle An Atomic Bomb."

Of course, Webb has not left everything behind. Just looking at the track listing will reveal that much of this album is political, just as "Mockingbird" was. And when you put the CD in to play, the first two tracks are primarily accoustic.

But it is at that point that Webb turns electric, emulating The Beatles and Bob Dylan and other classic rock acts perfectly. Some kudos could be taken away for that if it were not for the perfect meshing of all the sounds to create his own. And an electric Derek Webb sound is astounding. . . I love it.

And of course there are his lyrics, which are his focal point anyways. Since he is on an independent label, Webb has control over what he does and when he does it. So if he does not like a song, he cuts it and all the songs that are on his albums are what he really and truly believes in. One major difference between this album and "Mockingbird" is that "The Ringing Bell" is less like a punch in the gut lyrically and more personal in nature, even when political.

And on a side note, if you are someone who is feeling skeptical about Webb, this is a good album to try out. I know a few people who were skeptical about him as well; they were swayed upon listening to "The Ringing Bell". . . it really is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Unicorn Music.......2007-01-04

Okay, so the person singing "Now that I'm a Woman" song isn't Mia Farrow. And the whole casing is in German. No big. First of all, I honestly believe that only die-hard fans of the original movie will notice the different female singers. Secondly, all the other songs--at least the lyrical ones--are exactly the same; the ones sung by America anyway. Although, I think they kept the original male singer in "That's all I have to Say"...
As for the album being in a language only half of us will truly understand? No worries, the songs are in English, and if you really want to know what the back cover says, it's easy to find the movie and get the production notes, especially with the movie now on DVD. For that matter, the song titles on the back are also in English, whihc is odd given that the rest of the casing is in German....
All in all, I enjoy this CD. I have the original flim, but it was getting difficult to keep fast forwarding and rewinding becuase I didn't want to watch the whole flim, just listen to "Man's Road" or "In the Sea". Now that I have uploaded this on my Ipod--something I needed the CD for, cause you aren't going to find the songs anywhere on Itunes Music Store--I can listen to whatever song I want without fiddling with my VCR. The movie has always and will always be a favorite--and the music plays a large part of why--music I now have. (The other half of why is becuase I'm a unicorn lover.)
And that's all I have to say.

This soundtrack offers a pretty standard mix of new songs, old chestnuts, and excerpts from the score (here by John Debney). On the new tip, Joss Stone and Patti LaBelle engage in an overheated battle of the divas on CD opener "Stir It Up," a bouncy piece of fluff that sounds more like Aretha Franklin circa "Freeway of Love" than classic soul. Other originals include Barenaked Ladies' "One Little Slip" (this movie's answer to Counting Crows' "Accidentally in Love" from Shrek 2) and the Cheetah Girls' peppy-but-bland cover of "Shake Your Tail Feather." But the real highlights are the songs performed by the movie's vocal cast, which includes Joan Cusack, Garry Marshall, Zach Braff, Steve Zahn, and Amy Sedaris. Their group cover of Elton John and Kiki Dee's "Don¹t Go Breaking My Heart," for instance, sounds as if half of them were drunk in the recording studio (and this is meant as a compliment.) Braff's a cappella version of "We Are the Champions" is smashing and Cusack and Zahn's take on the Spice Girls' "Wannabe" is completely demented. The kids will laugh; their parents will laugh even harder for completely different reasons. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars my little one loves Chicken Little.......2007-04-05

My husband bought the Chicken Little movie for our 3 year old (mostly to get us OFF the Cars movie that we all have memorized) and he fell in love with it! He likes to act out the scenes and loves the music. He loves this CD at night when he's going to bed. We all have to dance to One Little Slip (he knows all the words) and then we have to "shake our tail feathers" before he jumps in bed every night! I enjoy the cd too, so it's good for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtrack for the children, especially if they liked the movie!.......2007-03-14

My son loved the movie Chicken Little, so we decided to purchase this for him to listen to on his discman. He loves the soundtrack as much as the movie, which made it an awesome investment(especially since the soundtrack has many good singers that aren't too hard on the ears for the adult crowdes either). My son was very happy with this item, and so was I.

I bought the CD to accompany the movie. My four year old watches the movie everyday. When I gave her the CD, after listening to it nightly, she takes it to bed with her everynight where I have to pry it out of her hands after she falls off to sleep. I don't get it, but she does...so it's worth what I paid for it.

Amazon.com essential recording

There are many, many Andrew Lloyd Webber albums out there, including cut-and-paste compilations and songbooks from individual artists, most notably Sarah Brightman, Michael Crawford, and even Jose Carreras. The Premiere Collection is probably as authentic as you can get in a hits album, however. In addition to the most popular selections from the original casts of Evita, Cats, and Jesus Christ Superstar, the 57-minute album includes two selections from Tell Me on a Sunday (also recorded by Bernadette Peters as Song and Dance), the title tune from Starlight Express, the "Pie Jesu" from the Requiem, and a snippet from the Paganini Variations, thereby allowing you to hear the good stuff without having to spring for the complete albums. Note that the three selections from Phantom of the Opera are the 1986 pop singles instead of the cast recordings, meaning Steve Harley rather than Crawford sings with Brightman on the title tune and Cliff Richard subs for Steve Barton on "All I Ask of You." (Crawford does sing "The Music of the Night," of course.) This 1989 compilation was too early for Aspects of Love or Sunset Boulevard, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is ignored, but these omissions are rectified in the follow-up album The Premiere Collection Encore, and the American-slanted version, The Very Best of Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Broadway Collection. --David Horiuchi

I think this album is F-A-I-R because it has one starlight express song and zero aspects of love songs. This is why i liked the album The reason i said that this is a fair album is that I like Starlight Express better. Song i like are "The Phantom of the Opera", "Take That Look off Your Face", All I Ask of You", "Don't Cry For Me Argentina", "Mr. Mistofflees," "Superstar," "Memory", "Starlight Express", "Tell Me On A Sunday", "Music of the Night", "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", and "I Don't Know How To Love Him". I dislike the following songs:" Track 6" and the last one because the last one was hard to understand and track 6 is instrumental.

Album Description

Since the late 1960s Jimmy Webb has been one of the truly enigmatic American songwriters, impressing with such diverse works as 'Wichita Lineman', 'Do What You Gotta Do', 'I Keep It Hid' & 'The Moon's A Harsh Mistress'. But perhaps his most towering achievement & one of the most astonishing collaborations in contemporary music, occurred in 1968 when Webb used imposing Irish actor Richard Harris (of CAMELOT fame) to dramatically interpret a truly bizarre & amorphous 7 minute orchestrated epic called 'Macarthur Park'. Although it was greeted with some bewilderment it became a global hit, reaching #2 in America. This seemingly odd association continued for two Dunhill albums, 'A Tramp Shining' (1968) & 'The Yard Went On Forever' ('69) & one single A-side ('One Of The Nicer Things'), all of which have been included on this single disc. Both albums are presented in their original sequence & include the

Excellent service and turnaround time! Would definitely deal with this seller again!

5 out of 5 stars Transcendent Angst.......2006-03-22

There seems to be no middle ground for this music. People either adore it or can't stand it. I find it not only powerful, but mind-altering in it's ravaged glory. From Watermark to That's the Way it is, it seems a self-destructive love affair is revealed by a tortured soul. These are bookended by the hypnotic and melancholy The Yard Went on Forever and the more upbeat and sublime One of the Nicer Things. If you've made it through Name of My Sorrow and In the Final Hours and enjoy them, then you're ready to graduate to the Harris/Webb masterpiece that is the second half of this cd. I own all the LP collaborations of these two uniquely talented men and I was pleased to see that the order of the recordings has been retained. There is a method to their madness. Be strong of heart when you listen, because their work will take you on a journey of emotional devastation and deprivation not unlike a friend getting you wasted in a bar when your heart has been broken and then picking you up and walking you out the door.

5 out of 5 stars A literary and musical Masterpiece.......2005-12-27

I sat there unable to move while the stereo phono pickup arm lifted off the last track of "The Yard" and the record slowed to a stop. I had just discovered a nearly-forgotten old treasure. So glad to find The Yard and A Tramp Shining" included on this CD re-issue a few years later.
Like some other works, the concepts of time, place, and love-interests tend to blend together; the passages can be interpreted along different lines on separate listenings. The "in medias res" presentation order in The Yard lends to the overall dramatic feel, as the flashbacks explain the separate stages of their lives: the innocent games of childhood, the turbulent dating years, revealing especially the various points of indecision in the seeming opposing reflections from one track to the next.
I think the "Yard" album peaks the first time with "Gayla", a perfect metaphor for the loss of innocence that can occur at the onset of puberty. Both the narrator (Richard/Jimmy) and the protagonist (Gayla) call upon the choicest of words to express their mutual horror at what is happening at this stage of life that causes irreversable changes in one's personality, usually not for the better in the short term. This explains an earlier concept in "Watermark" whereby Richard sounds as if the person in the photograph no longer exists (at least in that form). Such an intense passage is "Gayla", that at the end, the backing vocalists gently repeat their comforting and rhetorical album-opening question to the audience "Is everybody safe..."
Fans of late-sixties MOR and romantic melodrama would do well to check out both "The Yard..." and "A Tramp Shining" sections of this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Solid Adult MOR Sound.......2005-12-10

I bought this CD recently on the strength of very strong kudos in the music press. Jimmy Webb has become sort of a cult figure in much the same way as Lee Hazelwood, as his songwriting talents are receiving fresh critical acclaim. I always liked MacArthur Park and Richard Harris' voice anyway, so I thought it might be interesting to hear what the remainder of the Webb/Harris collaboration spawned.
As it turns out, the grand, majestic MacArthur Park is the best song on the CD, but don't let that scare you away. The Webb Sessions is a solid adult MOR album. Harris' voice is more than adequate for the material and there is plenty of the musical melodrama one expects from Webb.
While I have to be in the right mood to listen to this style of music, The Webb Sessions won't gather dust forever in my cabinet. This makes great background music in an office setting. I have it on in my office as I write this. Those who are fans of Scott Walker should find this much to their liking as well. If you like MacArthur Park as sung by Richard Harris, then here's an opportunity to get a wider sampling of his talents.

5 out of 5 stars Out of Nowhere - staggering brilliance.......2005-05-28

So it's the 60's with the Beach Boys, the English Invasion and the advent of hard rock. And then Jimmy Webb, some unknown kid, out of nowhere, writes profoundly different music, complete with orchestration that remains some of the most romantic and passionate music about lost love that has ever been penned. Miracle of miracles, some producer or record company exec. took a huge gamble and allowed it to be put to vinyl and released. It would have never happened later on. Secondly, somebody talked the late Richard Harris into using his considerable, but unique, musical talent on this album, the initial debut of a kid genius nobody had ever heard of. Richard gambled also.
Now it's almost 40 years after Jimmy Webb first wrote the music and as I listen to the double album, I'm once again overwhelmed by the passion and beauty of the Webb/Harris Sessions.
Once in a lifetime, Staggering Brilliance!

While countless fans flock to see soprano Renee Fleming's performances of the Countess in The Marriage of Figaro because she's got the voice and the dramatic ability to handle such meaty roles, the versatile singer throws her fans a curveball on Haunted Heart, singing popular standards and ballads as well as a few altered classical pieces. In her liner notes, Fleming calls this album a "look back at the road not taken" -- she played a weekly gig in a jazz club while in school. Nonetheless, her feel for the material here is undeniable. Interestingly, she drops her voice a full octave from her usual tessitura, and the change reveals a robust gospel-oriented approach filled with dramatic breaths and moans. The lyrical Fred Hersch (piano) and the idiosyncratic Bill Frisell (guitar) provide support, and both are adventurous jazz players who create subtle and uniquely haunting backdrops. It adds up to an interesting cross-section of ideas well carried off by the generous talents of all involved. --Tad Hendrickson

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Sublime and ridiculous.......2007-06-13

The sublime: much of the artistry of this recording is about sound, and the subtle blending/responding of voice with guitar sounds and / or piano sounds. It is in the sensitive musical interplay between the artists where this effort shines. Definitely not recommended for road trips!

The ridiculous: Fleming ended the majority of most phrases in most of the songs with a guttural of some sort which for me becomes irritating to the point of distraction. These punctuations are mostly quite awful: really tasteless, clumsy, and overused big time and I'm amazed at how this ever got released. Without these ersatz testifyin' noises this CD would be stunning.

So, if you have the ability and inclination to edit out this garbage from your perception as you listen I think you'll be glad you experienced these artists at work together. (Unfortunately I'm not up to it).

2 out of 5 stars Eeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww.......2007-06-06

Ugh. Like a manufactured home vs. a stick-built house, Fleming's manufactured (aka "training and technique") blues voice compares unfavorably to other jazz/blues singers/lounge acts. Would not, COULD not, listen to this recording straight through--one big long, breathy, minor key train wreck in the making. Took the CD on a road trip and had to pull over and remove from queue--either that or drive into a wall.

3 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be.......2007-04-10

I have to admit, Haunted Heart was a lot better than I thought it would be,especially her recordings of "River", "The Moon's a Harsh Mistress, "My Cherie Amour" and "In my life".
I think this is the most artistically successful recording of Pop/Jazz by a classical singer. I enjoyed it even better than the Anna Sophie Von Otter'/ Elvis Costello CD.
The perspective I am coming from is that of a classical singer who started out as a pop singer/songwriter. I perform and teach cross-genre but love a world class instrument such as Flemming's
I wanted to get the perspective of a friend who used to sing jingles and is also a trained singer but is usually critical of any attempts that opera singers make at crossing -over.
My friend is very familiar with Flemming's voice, but did not recognise it in this context when I played the CD for her. Her reaction was very complimentary, although she did comment that the diction was a bit strange.
She then played it for her brother a well known jazz singer and arranger who had a somewhat negative reaction. He found the singing to be overly dark and round. He prefers a cleaner more 'spoken' approach to this style of singing. I understand this perspective and therefore personally prefer Ella to Sarah as well, but let's not get too picky. Obviously, Rene Flemming is of the Sarah Vaghan School of jazz singing, which is not too shabby.

I will continue to enjoy this CD and will wait for another opera diva to top this one. But, somehow I think the next really good CD of Pop/ jazz from an opera star will also come from Rene.

To those who have been unreasonably mean and negative towards her, I can only say you are not fit to polish her shoes!

5 out of 5 stars Brava Renee.......2007-04-09

This talented woman can sing anything. I really enjoyed this cd with the lights turned down and a glass of wine to relax after a very stressful day at work. Renee could definitely have another singing career outside of opera should she choose. Hearing her drop that gorgeous voice down one octave rivals the best chanteuses in the business - Cassandra Wilson, Nancy Wilson, Regina Belle, Sarah Vaughan, etc. This cd of different musical styles reminds me of Nina Simone and Cassandra Wilson, two great singers whom could interpret any song genre and make their versions special. I loved all the songs and the standouts here are "Haunted Heart", "River", "My One and Only Love", "My Cherie Amour", "Cancao do Amor", and Beatles "In My Life", and "Hard Times Come Again No More".
I hope Renee keeps recording whatever catches her fancy because I'll certainly always listen.

5 out of 5 stars Art is always new. .......2007-03-10

Renee Fleming is an artist bringing us something new, and beautiful. The poor will always be with us as manifest in those who resent other's movement from their established zones. Renee Fleming is a great female voice with accomplishments her detractors will never have, but in their dreams.

I welcome Renee's elan demonstrated with her recent recordings, Love sublime with Brad Mehldau, and Haunted Heart with Fred Hersch and Bill Frissell. Bravery, fun, and talent combined by artists and for people who are listening. Hearing long time favorites Mehldau, Hersch, and Frissell is all the more sublime.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Early Death..Enduring Legacy..........2007-05-08

Much has been written about this small sickly man who battled Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa and supposedly won at the workouts at the Savoy Ballroom and when you combine his relationship with the then great 16 year old Ella Fitzgerald, ushering her into the world, as well as the overall quality of this orchestra and the influence he had on drummers like Buddy Rich one can't give less than 5 stars to this Proper box whose quality remains utilitarian as always, a sound bargain especially given the 10 or 15 dollars I paid for this with it's handsome colorful packaging, well written informative booklet and sound quality that is pretty good.
OK, I generally prefer the Decca, Columbia, and often JSP remasters as the case goes when arguing the Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman cases as to thir famous projects since the range is indeed compromised on many of these "budget jazz" labels to get the hiss out but when looking at the stellar selection presented here (the entire ASV/Living Series collection is here) as well as the entire Decca's Spinnin' The Web (excluding the first 2 tracks that are found on Classics releases).you can't go wrong.
Chick's output is practically all here, the schmaltz, great stuff and the campy tracks as well.99 tracks in all.
Being rather new to swing since I am still 48, I recommend this collection as well as recordings by Jimmie Lunceford, a close contemporary in style to my ears.
As to the music, it moves, shines, waxes nostalgia and maintains class, this diminutive little man was a giant of music and human spirit(akin to the UK's Ian Dury in the rock/punk world), and the beauty of these swing bands and their leaders, great songwriters and instrumentalists are truly an under appreciated idiom of fine art sorely in need of recognition and comeback in today's music world.

4 out of 5 stars Chick Webb Was Before His Time........2007-05-07

The Chick Webb Orchestra rates very highly when compared with other big bands of the mid and late thirties. And Chick Webb, of course, was a phenomenal drummer. All in all, this is a very enjoyable album. The two weaker points are: <1> some of the tunes are obscure and not very appealing, particularly on the first several listenings. and <2> since the original recordings were done close to 70 years ago, they are not the highest in fidelity; however, all things considered, the quality isn't bad. The two strong points are <1> Chick Webb's drumming, and <2>Ella's great singing.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection..........2007-03-25

Chick Webb was one of the fathers of this style of swing drumming. This is a great collection, especially if you appreciate the historical context in which the tracks were recorded. The sound is suprisingly good. Check it out!

4 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Chick Webb collection.......2006-07-05

Chick Webb, the King of the Savoy in the 1930s, did more than make great music. He discovered a 17-year old Ella Fitzgerald in 1935. This collection of Chick Webb Orchestra pieces, many with Ella, captures so much of swing music in the Art Deco era. This is an amazingly complete collection, from standards like "Tain't What You Do its the Way that Cha Do It" to the little known, but fabulous, "Gotta Pebble in My Shoe." This is the CD collection that will bring you back to the Harlem dance club days in the 30s, when everyone moved to the music.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of my Top Ten.......2007-07-11

I grew up with most of these songs done by other artists. I never dreamed that Jimmy Webb was himself such a performer. I prefer each and every one of Jimmy's versions of the songs on this CD to the better known covers by Campbell, Garfunkel, Harris, etc. As another reviewer said, this would be in the small pile of CDs I would want with me on the desert island. The piano playing is impeccable, the voice is surprisingly strong (and aches with emotion), the arrangements are stripped down and simply beautiful.

Since buying this CD last year, I have tried others by Jimmy Webb. This one is miles above the rest. If I could give 10 stars I would.

3 out of 5 stars Ten Easy Pieces.......2007-05-06

Webb is a fine songwriter and pianist, but he's too interested in singing along with his playing. I purchased Ten Easy Pieces in hope that Webb's long rendition of MacArthur Park was the fine piano solo of the piece I had been looking for. I'm still looking.

5 out of 5 stars A great starter album.......2007-01-04

A great artist and a good man. This is a small tasting of his work that will have you needing more.

5 out of 5 stars Jimmy Webb, Master American Songwriter, Legend, Genius.......2006-11-23

Heed no negative reviews. Read the positive ones carefully, as they make their points well. The opening intro and cut on this CD, "Galveston," is as beautiful an opening as ANY you will ever hear. It sets the mood of what's to follow perfectly: beautifully spare arrangements, impassioned vocals, and a collection of some of the finest songs ever written. I have seen Webb twice in concert: once with Glen Campbell, and those two concerts are highlights for me. He uses his voice well and, what's more, he brings alive the poetry of his great lyrics to songs like "Witchita Lineman," "Highwayman," "If These Walls Could Speak" (check out the moving, bittersweet arrangement on this one!), and, most, improbably, brings out the pathos of the classic, "The Worst That Could Happen." This is THE Webb CD to start with: you will listen to it again and again. It's one of those CD's that never grow old. The songs are classic. The arrangements are first class (Michael McDonald sings back-up on "Galveston," and it's a revelation), and Webb's vocals are underrated. He knows what he's doing. His thoughtful, impassioned approach works as well on CD as it does in concert. He is one of the greatest American songwriters - on par with Porter, Foster, Gershwin, Bachrach, any of them. Buy this CD and savor it. It will be one of the best purchases of music you ever make. Guaranteed!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2006-09-10

Jimmy Webb hits just the right note here with these interpretations of some of his better known songs. I caught Jimmy a few years ago on the now defunct "Roseann" daytime talk show. I was astonished at his ability, especially his vocal work. He is an outstanding entertainer and piano player. As a singer, I can only say he could have had a hit record himself with every one of his songs. If you like "real" music, you will love this!

5 out of 5 stars Stellar Album On Serious Subjects.......2007-04-30

Too many times in the Christian music market today you see artists get pigeon-holed into a rut of singing bland, non-challenging lyrics or repeated praise choruses that have almost lost their meaning to the listener. Andrew Osenga (formerly of The Normals and now of Caedmon's Call) told me just the other night that his band's old label forced them to record a second praise album - they did not have a choice really. And he told me not to buy it because "it sucked. Our hearts were not in it. . . It is not what Caedmon's Call is. Never was."

Derek Webb has refused a "real label" and instead has chosen to stay indie (a move I see repeated my multiple artists in CCM now), and subsequently has been able to stay high above that rut which has unfortunately become the norm. He has always stayed true to his faith and at the same time, created great music with challenging lyrics.

But Mockingbird is different: you find yourself wincing at times because of the cold, hard truth that has been packed into it. He shakes up what we thought to be true and reminds us of what the Bible actually commands: that we are called to give to the impoverished, that "peace by way of war is like purity by way of fornication," and that the second great lie is that "Jesus was a white, middle-class republican, and if you wanna be saved you have to learn to be like Him."

It feels a bit like a needed punch in the gut, but in the end you feel the need to sing along.

5 out of 5 stars Spirtually alive, informed, filled with love.......2007-02-28

Webb's take on the politicization of Christianity has apparently wrankled some of his (former?) admirers. I would be less than honest if I said that every one of these songs work from first to finish: some of them have more the feel of newspaper editorials than pieces of popular art or gospel songs. Yet I admire this record immensely, and not just because I find myself enthusiastically agreeing with Webb at virtually every point (and I do). Because Webb risks alienating his fans with lines suggesting that Jesus is not, in fact, a white, middle-class Republican (the nerve!) or reminding us, in a time of war, of Jesus' message of peace, this is a brave record. And though these are, if you think about it, rather obvious points, I respectfully disagree with the other reviewers who allege that love is missing from this record. I believe Webb's lyrics are filled with truth, wisdom, and deep love for Christ and His church. It is because he cares about the church that he is concerned with its political confusion--its strange tendency over the past several years to (so to speak) render unto Caesar things that are God's. Webb seems to me to suggest that we North American Christians are a narrow-minded bunch, too tribal and finger-pointing (something Christ was not). Church is not a place to go to be instructed in what one should think about an array of current issues or who to vote for; church is, like Christ Himself, beyond the merely political (even as we acknowledge that our faith is a part of who we are in every facet of life).

Beyond all this, a lot of the music on this record is also first rate, almost as good as anything beyond its Christian contemporary marketing--indie acoustic, maybe? Like a lot of other admirers of this record, I am especially fond of "I Hate Everything (But You)," which should have been a big hit everywhere. This almost (but not quite) secular song gets to the heart of true love as adeptly and uniquely as any song I can think of right now. Webb's lyrics are prophetic, but he can also write a beautiful tune. The stripped-down musical arrangements (generally much simpler than those on the equally wonderful SHE MUST AND SHALL GO FREE) are fitting for the to-the-gut lyrics.

Admittedly, I do not listen to a whole lot of contemporary Christian music. The vast majority of Christian musicians I admire are not usually grouped in this category. (Bruce Cockburn, Sam Phillips, T Bone Burnett, Al Green, the late Mark Heard and, I guess, U2, come to mind, but there are others.) But Derek Webb is, and will remain, one of my few exceptions. I have recommended him to a lot of people and will continue to. Now I sit back and anxiously await Webb's next one!

5 out of 5 stars Take time to let it soak in.......2007-02-23

At first, I was less than enthusiastic about this album. But, after several straight-through hearings, I'm hooked. I understand that many are turned off by the sometimes odd mixing and arrangements, as well as the pointed and confrontational lyrics. But, as someone trying to figure out how to be a responsible Jesus-follower in the American culture, while not falling prey either to the white middle-class Christian ghetto, on the one hand, or the anything-goes relativism of the world, on the other, Mockingbird has become a tremendous encouragement and breath of fresh air. Every time I listen to it, I think to myself, "I'm not alone."

5 out of 5 stars Webb's best yet.......2007-01-26

It's funny how musical tastes differ, and how devoted fans will see an artist's album as either "incredible," "an average effort," or "disappointing." Regarding Mockingbird, I am in the camp that considers this album his best yet. Furthermore, this review is based more on musical value than lyrical value: I consider Webb to be one of the most thoughtful and poetic songwriters, and regardless of muscial quality his lyrics are always well-crafted, thought-provoking, and, well, provocative. Webb doesn't disappoint lyrically with Mockingbird; it's the musical value that sets this album apart for me. The title song especially is catchy, staying in your head without having that "brain worm" quality that so many pop songs have. I guess I find the songs on this album overall to be more melodic and the music even more passionate than his previous two albums. I'm just happy Derek Webb is out there continuing to create and release new music - his albums are diamonds, especially compared to most pop music (Christian and otherwise) being released nowadays. I hope a new studio album is in the works!

4 out of 5 stars Like jumping into a pool of freezing water...takes some getting used to........2006-10-10

This album isn't Derek's best; however, after listening to it many times through, it has grown on me. I wouldn't go as far to say that it is horrible, like the last reviewer. It's good, but takes some getting used to.
