Product Description

Stromkern returns with a hard hitting whirlwind of electronic mutilations, intoxicating beats and an occasional driving guitar. Stromkern's latest release, Light it Up, picks up where its predecessor left off and showcases a more advanced Stromkern. Stellar tracks like Standup, Klang, Sentinel and Forgiven lead the new assault and assure Stromkern's role as one of the new pioneers of the American electro scene. Light it Up also features guest appearances from Frank Spinath of Seabound and Victoria Lloyd of HMB, Monochrome and Claire Voyant.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not recommended.......2007-05-03

I first heard Stromkern when they toured with Front Line Assembly. Their show was horrible. The music was extremely monotonous and was played poorly. I figured they were just having an off night, so I decided to give their albums a try. I was extremely disappointed. The music did not have any electronic feel and was basically a metal album. The vocals were way too hip-hop sounding--when they weren't over zealously trying to sound tough--and reminded me of an armature-ish Linkin Park. All I can say is that this album is a long shot from good EBM...or any EBM for that matter. I suggest sticking to FLA, KMFDM, or something along those lines.

4 out of 5 stars Might be more rock, but pretty awesome for an electro rock album..........2006-09-03

I'm a big fan of their older work and saw them when they were touring last year. Their new work isn't as great as the old stuff, but I still think it is a very nice produced work. I am glad they tried doing something different, but didn't really lose much of their previous sound. It is more rock, and that is how they intended it to be. A bit more political too? Anyway, it took me a while to get into this album, but after a few listens I was set. My favorites are Reminders, Ruin (really cratchy inbetween rock and electro :)), Stand Up (probably the most catchy dancey track on this album, it was also their single), and Delete (this one's so hard, but it's good). It's really a well rounded album I think, go check it out!

2 out of 5 stars Couldn't stomach this one.......2006-03-26

What drew me to Stromkern was the electonics and the strings they used. This CD is more of a metal album. most of the songs all sounded the same to me. I gave it numerous tries but it just didn't click. I need electronic noodling in my music.

3 out of 5 stars Electro-Politics For An Electronic Generation.......2006-01-03

Stromkern have always released strong records ever since their 1997 debut Flicker Like A Candle. Followed by the highly experimental and minimal sounding Dammerung In Traum and the critically acclaimed Armageddon in 2000, Stromkern are back with Light It Up, covering fresh ground they never have before.

Almost a decade down the road, Ned Kirby has finally given in to writing political lyrics. According to Kirby, it just became impossible to keep the political elements out of his music. And I applaud his move. Maybe it's my personal fascination with political lyrics; I count some highly political bands - Radiohead, Manic Street Preachers, Sex Pistols - as my favourite bands of all time. And lyrically, Light It Up presents Kirby's reflections on the last several years spent living in the United States, covering topics of war, terrorism, globalization, corruption and greed.

In fact, my favourite song on here is without a doubt "Reminders" - which, is probably the most political as well as one of the most terribly sad/angry tracks I've heard in a while. It begins with samples from George W. Bush's State of the Union addresses placed over repetitive synth lines and progresses into an energetic frenzy by the end of the track. It will put the listener in pure euphoria.

The first single off the album "Stand Up" (which continues to be a club favourite throughout the world) and "Hindsight" are two other outstanding tracks on Light It Up. Except for these two tracks, the rest are a great listen but fall short of being anything more than that, though they of course, are worth the spin every time I listen to the album - just not the sort of songs you'd want to put on repeat.

What has always been especially striking about Stromkern has been the staccato-like rap Kirby uses. This is hip hop meets industrial. It creates one of the most unique sounds I have ever heard. And this, of continues to be the trademark sound of Stromkern in Light It Up.

It may have been a long time coming but Light It Up was definitely worth the wait. Expanding their horizons with this release, Stromkern have solidified their position as one of the electro acts of the moment, not only from North America, but beyond as well.

5 out of 5 stars Post-industrial as it best!.......2005-10-07

STROMKERN returns with a hard hitting whirlwind of electronic mutilations, intoxicating beats and an occasional driving guitar. Almost four years after the release of ''Armageddon'' comes STROMKERN's 4th studio album, ''Light It Up''. The effects of four years of touring can be heard throughout the record, but most clearly on tracks like ''Forgiven'' or ''Delete'', with pummeling acoustic drums and guitars meshing with STROMKERN's signature electronic core. The new album also marks the band's first forays into outside vocal collaborations, with Frank Spinath of SEABOUND guesting on the technoid ''Sentinel'' and Victoria Lloyd of CLAIRE VOYANT on the ballad ''Hindsight''. The first single ''Stand Up'', a classic STROMKERN track packed with dense sequences and Ned's rapid-fire vocal, peaked at #4 in the German Alternative Charts and remains in regular rotation at clubs throughout the world.

5 out of 5 stars A delicious set of some of the best Blue Note jazz........2000-01-17

Want some of the best jazz around--? Budget impaired, like myself? Fortunately, for us, there's this Blue Note Records collection of the best from favorites like Donald Byrd, Lou Donaldson, and Grant Green. Now, the powers that be at EMI-Capitol thought to get some sells of this great jazz by packaging it as a "sample this" offering to hip-hoppers/rap ranconteurs. It turns out that they needn't have done so. The various volumes and the box set with Vols 1-4 has some great work like Bobbi Humphrey's "Harlem River Drive" and Herbie Hancock's "Olilloqui Valley". The music, in other words, can really stand alone...I would urge those interested in sampling to listen to these greats not to lift a groove, but to help themselves in learning how to make their own groove....Dig?

4 out of 5 stars ha ha ha.......2006-04-05

this dude is nutts on the mic, can't say I knew much about him prior to this album. Had heard him on 1 or 2 songs, and knew he was down with Celph Titled. This album is really solid. It's way over the top, and really fun. A lot of people might find it tasteless and disrespectful, but the content is so obviously aggerated one should be able to laugh at it. Skits are almost always a low point for me, but this album has some outstanding skits. The one where he's dreaming the Devil was talking to him and telling him "you're album's not coming out!" kills me. It's so rediclious and stupid! Lyrically Majik is much like his homie Celph Titled, and always saying something unexpected. The talk of Russian Mafia dudes on ski's shooting at them is beyond explination. Him & Celph get busy togeather over the same beat Dre & Ren flipped over almost 20 years ago. There's not any real touching moments, no songs about his mom, love or whatever. This is just a really retarded record, and it works.

5 out of 5 stars And I got my own theme song..........2005-12-20

Oh man where does one start trying to sum up Majik Most? Maybe his personal website complete with links to XXX rated websites? Or his over the top claims such as slapping Suge Knight? Or maybe its the wacky skits about his streets being so being so real that you're liable to get attacked by russians armed with machine guns on skis or diseased outbreak monkeys? That's getting closer but its probably his bio that best summarizes his personality when at the tender age of 2 "made a karaoke machine explode" and " at the age of 5 one of his metaphors made and elderly man flip out of a wheelchair'. "

While it almost sounds ridiculous to describe Majik Most to anyone who's never heard of him, he's one of the more entertaining rappers around connected to some extra talented friends, such as the always amazing Louis Logic, battle vet Apathy or the incredibly underrated Celph Titled whom all make guest appearances.

As the album title implies, the entire album is done tongue and cheek, and probably at that, tongue and cheek as in tongue and that other cheek. Its completely offensive and completely entertaining. As if that wasn't enough, there's a DVD complete with Majik Most and Dutchmassive talking crap to tourists and Majik kicking a free style while a girl strips naked in the background. One has to wonder what this cat would do if he had production money. Molesting Hip Hop is a Mixtape... so its not meant to be taken as an official album, which generally puts an album to second rate standards (a trend that is starting to wear hip hop heads out listening to C material or horrid remixes). While there's a little beat jacking and short songs lasting a verse or two, it feels more like an album except with an over abundance of skits. If I were to hold this to mixtapes standards, this quite possibly is the greatest mixtape ever created hands down. If it were a stand alone album I'd be a little more critical and probably give it a four star rating. Its a toss up but given the fact I keep coming back to this album and re-listening as it keeps growing on me even that's arguable.

There's also a strange air of intelligence as Majik Most parodies a bit of the all already ridiculous rap life, that's been ripe for a lot of bland stand up bits and bad skits. Instead of succumbing to the usual tired jokes, Majik Most fully embraces rap/hip hop (as he's obviously a fan) and uses humor to subtly criticize some negatives by just pushing the envelope too far. Other clever moments include the should-be-famous JJ Brown's sampling of the Austin Power's soundtrack (without being obvious) on the album's most listenable joint, Chicks Don't Mind, with an attitude much in line of Mr Powers himself (read again, no direct references to Austin Powers) and skits that are self parody of his own skits, that often include bloopers of those who are supposed to be making the skits. It becomes a strange juxtaposition of then-and-now when comical rap skits that used to make fun of rap skits have become so cliched that it takes a voice actor scratching her head "What am I supposed to say?" when trying to perform parody of a comical rap skit making fun of a comical skit. Its convoluted, genius and funny. Just buy the damn album already.

5 out of 5 stars Hands down one of the best releases of 2005!.......2005-11-02

I can't describe how much I love this CD! It is just non-stop entertainment from start to finish. You can let it play all the way through and not feel the urge to skip anything. The way the skits and interludes are intertwined throughout the songs is comedy genius. The production & sound quality on this CD is astounding. Majik Most is a true entertainer and it really shows through on amazing tracks like "Deranged Barber", "Skinny Girls", "Nasty Toes", and "Chicks Don't Mind". Not to mention the insanely dope guest appearances from the likes of Celph Titled, Apathy, Louis Logic, Guttamouf and many more - every MC seemed to have put forth their best effort.

If you're a fan of hip hop from the likes of the Beatnuts, Alkaholiks, J-Zone, Demigodz, etc. Then it's guaranteed you will enjoy this release. I can't say anything more other than to make sure you pick this CD up... it's a must have.

5 out of 5 stars Yo, yeeeaaa it ma-ma-ma-ma-ma-majik most!.......2005-10-08

Most of the beats where made by Celph Titled of the Demigodz.. Celph and Majik are very close, but there were plenty of other producers on there too.

And as for me, well I love Majik. He goes to HCC with my boy Good Feezie and the man is a lyrical genius. Glad to see some support from across the whole US..

And yea, I posted up the customer graphic.. (On mama's account though)

5 out of 5 stars Top 10 album for 2005 in all music.......2005-10-01

The Lyrics and the beats are above average but what makes this album so good is it ever lasting replay value and very good song structure and formating on this LP.I have not heard of Majik Most and it is a shame that only 2 people have reviewed this album because it is fun and will take you back.
If is not a pure classic it is very close to it.

5 out of 5 stars Blastin'!.......2003-06-19

This is the best B-3 funky jam album I own (and I have a lot of them). I am not sure which (*cough*) album the other reviewer is talking about. If there is a better Reuben Wilson album, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. All of the tracks are strong, with Orange Peel and Hot Rod probably leading the way. It takes the funkiest of Wilson's short late 60s- early 70s career. If you like funky B-3, this album is a must have. If you ever see this album for sale, buy it!

5 out of 5 stars No one plays the B-3 as Funky as Reuben.......1999-07-02

Reuben Wilson is undoubtedly the funkiest man to have ever sat behind the bench of the B-3. While the album we all really want to hear (*cough*) is still out of print, this is second best, and features one of his most climatic grooves, Ronnie's Bonnie among others. - - Reuben is no be-bopper wannabe, nor is this antequated organ lounge Blues and Boogaloo... these are highly danceable rare Blue Note grooves. Like the works of Big John Patton, many of the grooves are deceptively simple with lot's of surprizes that kinda land you straight in the jaw and go straight for the K.O. After you listen to this album ACCENT ON THE BLUES (John Patton), LEGENDS OF ACID JAZZ (Leon Spencer), FUNK INC., and CHARLES EARLAND (BLACK TALK) and well worth considering.

4 out of 5 stars Igloomag.com REVIEW ::.......2005-12-20

REVIEW BY: Mark Teppo at [...]
(02.21.05) Soaring ambient opening notwithstanding, Bidnezz hiccups and stutters like it is the performance art piece for the Dance of the Misfit Toys. With twenty-two tracks that take anywhere from less than thirty seconds to more than five minutes to present their broken toy choreography, Bidnezz hums with the chaotic spasms of fractured hip-hop. Imagine Dr. Dre bringing in Oval to do final tweaking of the latest West Coast blunt tracks.

Vibraphone and drum kit perform a loungesque soft shoe in "Wallis & Futuna (remix of Steve & Rob)" while digital processes slice and drop the duet into a hiccuping instrumental. The gentle mood of "Dog Actually (remix of Mic Mell)" is shattered by a rupturing of sonic walls, a breakthrough that allows surges of scrambled vinyl noises to fill the room. The vocal line of "Hollis (remix of Cinelux)" is heavily sliced, the simple lyrics turned into stuttering gasps of broken words. "Disa Bling" hops and churns around a sliver of voice, a cut-up sample that is folded back on itself a few hundred times until it becomes barely recognizable as having been born from an organic source. "$$legs" is an R & B piano melody that is caught in a static snare and, as it struggles to break free, it distorts and breaks up, becoming a fragmentary ghost of its full-bodied self.

Some of the interstitial pieces -- the short bursts of sound that live and die in less than a minute -- are transitional efforts, burps of scattered collages in "Babbling" and "Worldcomin" that erupt like a fast-forward moment on an old tape deck. Others like "Hipsteos" cross your radar like moments of clarity on the radio dial where you interrupt some strange Caribbean transmission already in progress. As individual tracks, they don't last long enough to sustain any life of their own but, when taken in tandem with their adjacent tracks, these small transitional pieces add to the overall texture of Bidnezz: the strange and fragmentary soundtrack for a kingdom of damaged wind-up toys. Travis Stewart makes songs and then cracks them open, curious as to their internal workings. The resulting pieces are patchwork creations with gaps and holes in the integrity of their melodies, leaving room for the exposed tick-tock of their clockwork mechanisms.

    5 out of 5 stars perfect compilation!.......2000-04-11

Truly, one of the best things Blue Note has done in years has been the "blue" series of compilations released with all different moods and themes. Whether its "Blue Bacharach" "Afro Blue" or in this case "Blue Breakbeats", this series has made for some of the best listening around in jazz. Blue Breakbeats vol 4 is my favorite of them all. I can't find one low point on the disc. The whole record flows imaginatively from song to song, building in energy and creativity, finally ending on a song ("this is soul") summing up not just the disc, but the whole series as well. I definitely have to say that the standout tracks are "Woman of the Ghetto" by Marlena Shaw, whose lyrics are so profound and are delivered with infinite emotion; "Bring Down The Birds" is a track by Herbie Hancock that funks like no other. (Did you really think Deee-Lite could come up with that bassline?) My favorite track is one that brings back a lot of memories...Three is the Magic Number. It grooves, is forever inspiring, and has found its rightful place in postmodern's history, being sampled on one of the timeless hip-hop masterpieces of the late 80's/early 90's : De La Soul's "3 feet High and Rising". Overall, this collection is as funky as they get, and we should all bow our heads and pay homage to the funk gods, for it is they who give our life a little groove.

5 out of 5 stars Raw Hard Beets.......2003-05-29

This CD title perfectly suits this mix, which is a great find for anyone who thinks Hard House kick beats are gloriously relentess, aggressive and wonderfully hypnotic. The tracks change quickly, providing a variety of catchy basslines, samples and synth hooks to contrast the constant kick in most of the songs. Bam Bam's mixing is smooth and well planned. He provides a break on the 18th track with a compelling sample from Da Tekno Warriors. This is a mix that features music you'll never hear on the radio or MTV, its precious primal stuff that makes you wonder what Chicago put in its water to produce such joyous music.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to the bone, need a buzz to take the edge off.......2000-06-22

There is a repetitive bass beat that could be used less. Bam Bam is much better live. But the CD is good too.

    3 out of 5 stars harder beatZ.......2000-04-07

Hard beats that pound your mind, loved 'em...but if you don't like extra voices mixed in with the music, I'd listen to samples before buying this.

5 out of 5 stars Da Hard Beats.......1999-12-21

This CD's really sick! It's exactly what you need if you are looking for hard hitting House beats. I would give it more stars if I could. You can compare it to Bad Boy Bill but it's better!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars mediocre overall, but *does* have some "must have" tracks.......2005-10-29

The only reason to have this disc is if you have no other way to get the following must-have tracks:

    * Ode To Billy Joe - Lou Donaldson (used by Mary J. Blige)
    * Mystic Brew - Ronnie Foster (used by the Tribe Called Quest for Electric Relaxation)
    * It's Your Thing - Lou Donaldson
    * Dominoes - Donald Byrd
    * Get Out Of My Life Woman - Joe Williams (used by Biz I think)

I'd add Walk Tall by Cannonball Adderley, but it's *not* the version I think people have heard of, which was fantastically used in Brand Nubian's Concerto In X Minor. For this, you need Walk Tall/Mercy, Mercy, Mercy from Adderley's 1975 Phenix album.

I was really happy to get Mystic Brew, Ode To Billy Joe, and Get Out Of My Life Woman, as I had never had them before. The Lou Rawls is a good slow groove. The Shirley Bassey is a good soul groove.

The songs I haven't mentioned don't do anything for me; I'd never really heard them before this disc either.

5 out of 5 stars tasty and crunchy dolomite.......2004-07-13

if you are a Beastie Boys fan you'll hear some sources -- be sure and check and out "Put on Train" by the Three Sounds -- its pure dolomite!

4 out of 5 stars The least exciting volume of the series, but it's still dope.......2003-01-23

Blue Break Beats was compiled by Blue Note Records, giving any hip-hopper or R&B fan a crash course in songs where their favorite artist "got that beat from" (for example, many folks will recognize "It's Your Thing" as the "Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down" groove by Brand Nubian). This volume has its standouts like "Dominoes" by Donald Byrd, "You've Made Me So Very Happy" by Lou Rawls, and a great rendition of "Light My Fire" by Shirley Bassey. But that song called, "Don't Call Me Nigger, Whitey", throws the album off course a little bit. Still get the album for the other songs, though, and once you listen to this volume, you're gonna want to get the other volumes, too.

3 out of 5 stars patchy, but some stone-cold classics in here.......1999-07-30

All the Blue Break Beats records are essential listening in my book. Sure, end to end listening can sometimes get a little afghan coat, but these albums have pure gold nuggets in amongst the beardy filler. Standout trax here are Gene Harris' funky, funky, funky version of "Don't Call Me Nigger Whitey" and Joe Williams utterly SMOKIN' "Get Out My Life Woman"....what an awesome groove, pool 'o' chocolate voice and a horn section that are so tight they must be underage. Alone , these two tunes are worth the price of admission. A wicked set.
