Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. While that sound has been called unimaginative and unoriginal and at times does feel a little too familiar, the material on One X is never less than convincing and it packs a serious and stinging rock `n' roll punch track after track. --Jedd Beaudoin

1 out of 5 stars Sorry Lyrics.......2007-07-06

The band is excellent. They are good musicians and play tightly together. The problem is the lyrics are awful. This is nothing less than nightmares set to music. If you have these same thoughts running through your head, seek some professional psychiatric help. Absolutely not recommended for young listeners. Parents you are warned. No wonder the record industry is on the ropes.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD.......2007-06-13

My Favorite CD
Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped. In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

5 out of 5 stars One X.......2007-06-12

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

5 out of 5 stars Very cool modern rock.......2007-06-10

I recently went to a Nickelback concert and Three Days Grace was opening for them. I fell in love with the band hearing their music at the concert and felt that Nickelback should opening for Three Days Grace, not the other way around!

This "back-to-the-roots" road-trip documentary CD/DVD from blues-rocking guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd can be viewed in two ways--it's either the culmination of a long-held desire to promote and play with some unheralded blues veterans before they pass away (as six had already done since the recording was made, 2½ years before its early 2007 release) or a way to regain the blues audience Shepherd all but alienated on his artistically and commercially disappointing 2004 hard-rock release, The Place You're In. Ultimately, it succeeds on both accounts. Regardless of the project's inspiration, the results by and large justify whatever the means might have been to get this show on the road--literally and figuratively. Shepherd hit the highway for a week and a half along with producer Jerry Harrison (ex-Talking Heads), a portable studio, and backup musicians including the rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble. He searched out blues artists both obscure (the late guitarist Etta Baker, who plays in her kitchen, is a highlight) and better known (Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and B.B. King) for a series of acoustic and electric jams, all of which feature Shepherd--who, to his credit, generally keeps his hot-dogging tendencies in check. A closing concert featuring members of Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters' bands never quite generates the heat it should, but country bluesmen Cootie Stark, Neil Pattman, and harmonica ace Jerry "Boogie" McCain provide plenty of sparks. Shepherd seems sincere enough, but the real stars are the ageing musicians who have maintained their chops and intensity through a lifetime of performing music that clearly comes from the soul. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Blues greats, best of blues artists.......2007-07-07

Wonderful DVD/CD chronicling major historic blues artists - one of a kind album - a 'must have' for the blues enthusiast. Highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-07-04

I bought this CD/DVD AFTER seeing KWS in concert at Viejas here
in San Diego. What a treat to see and hear Pinetop Perkins and
Hubert Sumlin among others! My estimation of KWS as a performer
and good guy increased by a quantum leap after seeing the show.
He may be one the best guitarists I've ever seen live, and he
respectfully kept that fiece talent in check when the others were
stepping out. He seems a real gentleman as well as lover of the
music and the people.

The package is excellent, a real gem. The interviews and background
materials are touching, especially of the folks that have since passed.

BUY THIS CD. THESE GUYS ARE THE REAL DEAL. YOU WON'T BE SORRY!

This is actually my second purchase of this item. When I purchased one for myself and realized how good it was, I purchsed one as a gift for a friend. Highly recommend for anyone who loves the blues.

5 out of 5 stars As real as you can get.......2007-06-27

I stumbled on this by accident while looking for another blues cd (big blues fan). I read about how Kenny Wayne Sheperd wanted to connect with these old blues pioneers and it sounded like it might be worth a try.He and his crew have put together one of the most entertaining documentories
I have ever seen. The cd is fantastic as well with track after track of pure blues. If you are a blues fan this DVD/CD combo is a must. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING cd..........2007-06-23

This is one of the best works of pure music I have bought in awhile. Not very often do you buy something where the artist really tried to make a statement with the music, but here, they do. For KWS and company to just go out, find the ROOTS of the music we listen to today, and make music on the spot with them is just amazing. Too bad they didnt bring more film to document even more than they already did. I could watch that footage for days. Everything here is beyond top notch. Very insightful, provides a glimpse of where the music came from and where it is going. If your a fan of ANY kind of blues, southern, or just guitar led music...you will love this.

With a majority of the songs on 10,000 Days clocking in well past the seven-minute mark, you wouldn't be entirely mistaken in thinking that the title of the album refers to how long it actually takes to make it through the whole thing. Two of the tracks--the sitar and tabla enhanced "10,000 Days (Wings Part 2)" and its suitably epic psych-rock sister "Rosetta Stoned"--even linger on for nearly a dozen leisurely minutes each. That's delightful news for the legion of Tool fans that have been waiting five years for the follow-up to 2001's Lateralus, which debuted at number one and sold 2.3 million copies in the United States. Singer Maynard James Keenan is back on mystical form after his hiatus with the politically slanted A Perfect Circle, sounding at once ethereal and eloquent as he calmly charges through the metal tempest of the opening track "Vicarious." The rest of the band, meanwhile, hits a series of high-flying moments with tracks such as "Jambi" and "The Pot." When Tool sounds as good as it does on these songs it's hard to get enough. Which makes it all the more baffling that a surprisingly large chunk of the disc is given over to mood-enhancing soundscapes like "Lost Keys" and "Vigniti Tres." Who has time for filler? --Aidin Vaziri

1 out of 5 stars STICK A FORK IN TOOL - THEY'RE DONE !!!!!.......2007-07-11

yeah they use to rock like 5 years ago.their best songwriting is behind them.lateralus had it's moments but it was no aenima or undertow.all good things come to an end.

5 out of 5 stars Tool is evolution, not revolution.......2007-07-08

Tool has become one of the longer-lived and most well-established metal bands, but because of their evolving style the most consistent element of their CDs is that they piss off a sizeable portion of their fans. Undertow was too heavy, Aenima was too fast, Lateralus was too progressive and 10,000 Days is too mellow.

Tool fans are known as some of the most rabid, die-hard fans in the music industry, not just just because of their loyalty but because of their enthusiasm: spending an hour in a Tool mosh pit is like spending six hours in a Slayer or Pantera pit (I know this from personal experience, and I was a Slayer fan before I even heard of Tool). It is then natural to expect some outcry at each CD release because some fans will always expect more of the same. Tool just isn't that band.

Most fans eventually seem to take a liking to each new CD after a few months of listening (or at least stop bitching about it) because Tool works on each CD until it is perfected. The style or sound of Tool may not be what some people like, but the CD is still a masterpiece. This is not to say that Tool CDs are a "Learn to Love" sound; they are not. It is just impossible to predict what the next Tool album is going to be like, and the new sound always shocks some people. Despite this it is almost unheard of for someone to renounce their fanship.

10,000 Days represents the 5th sound from Tool, and is in many ways the most demanding of its listeners. Tool is, if nothing else, heavy, therefore the most shocking aspect of 10,000 Days is that it has, at least at first glance, a lighter sound. Realistically the CD has plenty of drop D power cords, massive distortion and beats all characteristic of heavy bands (with, of course, the intricacy and complex composition/timing obligatory to all Tool music), but the album also has another form of heaviness, which is the juxtoposition of lighter rhythms with the heavier rhythms. This is more demanding to the listener because someone who is expecting an album containing the same songs as previous albums may ignore the lighter side of the CD. In effect many listeners only heard half the CD on the first try.

This juxtoposition of lighter and heavier styles is most reminiscent of A Perfect Circle's first album (obviously not a coincidence), however Tool has certainly perfected it and created an album that truly redefines what heaviness is about.

The lyrics of Tool have always been enigmatic, if not stygian, and controversial, but 10,000 Days was more shocking to Tool's fans than the rest of society. The title cut almost seems an acceptance of judeo-christian religions, which would be shocking, if not outright betrayal, to the fanbase. Knowledge of the story behind the song quickly alleviates that idea.

Tools music is certainly worthy of 5 stars (or more) by itself, but this is a CD that truly deserves more than 5 stars. Like other Tool albums buying the CD gets you more than music, it is also art. Tool's latest installment contains a serious of 3D images of the typical Tool style. To be clear, these are not the cheesy red and blue captain EO 3D; they are very high quality and immersive works. Going back to the music, the album is around 77 minutes long, even taking out the few filler type tracks the album contains as much music as other bands release on 2 CDs. The CD also sold for 12.99 USD on debut, far cheaper than many bands that spend less than half as much time on their music.

To recap: You get more music, that's higher quality as well as amazing artwork for much less than most other CDs. Even non-Tool fans should be able to respect a band that really goes above and beyond the standard.

There is much speculation that 10,000 Days may be the penultimate (or perhaps last) Tool album, but if Tools record is any indication one thing is certain: as long as Tool keeps playing, we'll keep listening.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER AWESOME TOOL ALBUM.......2007-07-06

This band is the most talented band out there! It is nice to hear a band that is not afraid to write a song that last longer than 3 minutes. This album is loaded with songs well over 5 minutes without having to be repetitive. This along with every other TOOL album deserves 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Wait.......2007-07-04

Well its been a little over a year since this CD came out. And it took some getting used to at first, and I don't think a lot of people appreciated it upon its first listen. I had some difficulty as well. I was stunned by Lateralus, which remains as the greatest CD I ever bought, and have ever heard. Its music of my generation.

Anyway, 10,000 Days I think was surrounded by too high of expectations, and I'm very guilty of that myself. There was so much speculation going into it (decoy albums, fake song titles, a second release in late summer (?), hidden messages, etc.) and all of it was just so far fetched that people were without a doubt disappointed with the final product. But after you let go of what it "should" have been, and embrace it for what it is, you'll find this to be just as good as Aenima and Undertow. I don't think it surpasses Lateralus, or even Aenima, but its nestled right on the same line as Undertow and Opiate, in my opinion.

Vicarious opens it up, and it immediately reminds me of Schism. Schism being probably one of 3 Tool songs, the non-fan would know. I think Vicarious is a poor choice for an opener to a CD, but its an effective song, if not a bit predictable. Its by far my least favorite on the CD, and even when I first heard it on the radio a year ago, I was slightly worried. It seemed to be a cross between A Perfect Circle's lyrical themes, and Tool's music. A toned down, diluted radio vehicle, one that would be easily accessible for non-fans, and moderately acceptable to die-hards. Nevertheless, its a well structured song with a decent chorus, and a pretty good finale. It starts out bland, but picks up and by the end of it, you can't say its a bad song, but its far from amazing, and by far to me, the worst on the album ("worst" for lack of a better word). This was the first single off of 10,000 Days, and it was a decent choice, but like I said, it doesn't represent the album that well.

The minute I heard Jambi, I fell in love with it. To me, this is best song on the album. How odd that the extremes for me happen at the start of the CD? Anyway, its driving, its pulsating, and it just strikes you as being a Tool song. Its wicked live, and one of the more well constructed aspects of the album. You can argue the talk-box solo is unnecessary, but Adam Jones is quirky that way, he'll throw things in just for the hell of it. I think what makes this song so memorable is that its lyrics are very vague, and you can apply them to yourself, just like with previous Tool songs on other albums. The band is quoted as to saying this is their "blues album" with a lot of heart felt lyrics, and personal reflection involved. You can tell that throughout the entire CD, except on Jambi, which is slightly ambiguous. You don't know who Maynard is talking to. He doesn't address it. And I think its that sense of vagueness that makes this such a great song in my opinion. Best on the album to me.

The Wings duo is a toss up for me. The main reason its a toss up is because I feel the first part Wings for Marie Pt. 1 as a stand alone track, fails. It starts out good, but then develops into a jam session. And I am not a fan of that. However, you put it with 10,000 Days, and it makes sense and it fits. But take 10,000 Days, and it can stand alone. In fact, when you hear it live, you can't wait till 10,000 Days, because that's where the intensity lies. You can look at Wings Pt. 1 as merely a segue at times, because it doesn't seem to have that much character alone. But I judge them together, because just like Parabol/Parabola, they come together, and shouldn't be separated. Together, they are epic. Incredibly heart felt, very deep for a man who keeps himself rather closed off, but yet wears his heart on his sleeve so profoundly. Truth be told, Maynard sings to his mom and its hard to see why he loved the woman and pays so much homage to her. He disagreed with so much of her ideas, its amazing that he misses her as much as he does. But that's beside the point. This two piece set here, brings chills down my spine when I hear it. And the live rendition has brought tears to many eyes because of its raw emotion. The first time I heard it live, the entire crowd was silent. No one yelling, no one shouting. Some people were crying. Music does that to us. Overall, The Wings duo is effective. I wouldn't recommend separating them though.

The Pot is a bit of a dichotomy to me. On one hand, its so poppish you can't believe Tool wrote it. On the other hand, its so poppish you just have to love it. Its groovy and wicked. You can pop it on and sing to it and just scream your lungs out. It's a signature song now, and according to Billboard, their biggest hit to date, reaching #1 on the Mainstream Rock Songs chart. I know some people fell in love with the intro, the falsetto vocals that make you do a double take as you struggle to remember "yup, this is Tool" because it doesn't follow the typical structure we're used to on Aenima or Lateralus. It's vastly different. And I think that's why 10,000 Days as a whole doesn't feel like a Tool CD at times. But then, there are splashes throughout the Pot that remind you, "yes, I'm definitely listening to Tool" such as Danny Carey's drumming. Its groovy and its fun, and to me, after Jambi, its one of the best parts of this CD.

The segue Lipan Conjuring is one of the worst segues to me. I enjoy some of the segues, but of course they are the part of the CD skipped the most. LC doesn't really do anything. It acts as a wetting of the pallet, but it still leaves little to be desired. There are some classic Tool segues, and this won't end up at the top. The ending, with a very harsh scream from MJK is the only saving grace to it, but you have to wait like 50 seconds to get to there, which just isn't worth it.

Lost Keys is a very long intro into Rosetta Stoned. I love the intro, except when its done live. It doesn't come off as well when they drag it out 4 extra minutes (its only like 4 minutes, so an 8 minute intro to Rosetta Stoned is annoying). The voice overs are forgivable but unnecessary. As LK ends, it kicks into Rosetta Stoned, which some consider a rehashing of Third Eye, which it's not. It's nothing like Third Eye (from Aenima). It has a class all by itself. Don't be fooled, I'm not particularly fond of this song. I think that with Vicarious, its quite boring. However, there are some excellent moments in the song. "overwhelmed as one would be..." is an amazing line, sung with a lot of intensity. I think the rapid talking from Maynard is comical, but not very effective, especially live, this song comes out like a big mess when its performed live. I think the boys will ax it from future tours. I think what drags this song down to me, is its length first of all. I'm not saying I don't like instrumental, or that i'm all about lyrics, but it seems that the spacing in between it doesn't work. There's just a lot of forgettable space in the song, where you're ready to change it to the next song. I feel that the song lacks in the department, and it doesn't keep our attention very well. Its well crafted, but it needed something else. The spoken word is cool, but it gets old. And the lyrics are sub-par when you consider what Maynard can actually do. Singing wise, its great, on par with the rest of the record (but not as great as Lateralus) Overall, I feel this song is a bit lengthy, and slightly boring, but still very listenable and enjoyable for those with patience.

Intension is one of those songs where you think its a segue, but its not. People will skip it, that's for sure. But their missing out on one of the best parts of the album. Intension is considered to be like Disposition (I think mainly b/c of the "tion" endings). Its roughly 7 or 8 minutes long, and there isn't much to it. But the sound, its so soothing, and it prepares you perfectly for the final song on the album, Right in Two. Intension takes you into the final stages, and really is a well constructed piece of music by Tool. There are three epic songs on this disc. The Wings duo, LK/Rosetta Stoned, and Intension/Right in Two. Wings 1, alone, doesn't work. Lost Keys alone, doesn't work. But Intension by itself...WORKS. It is effective as a song, and can stand alone. Its cool to hear it trail off into Right in Two, but its not necessary. It won't be a mainstay I'm sure, and its never been play fully live, but its one of Tool's more relaxing, and soothing songs. It goes right into the final song.

Right in Two, bares close resemblance to what I said in regards to the APC lyrics. Its very straight forward. But it skews from the path that you'd think it would be. It starts out as being just like any other Tool song, and then cuts loose into a predetermined jam, that is so intense, and it builds and builds, until you personally are ready to burst through with the "Angels on the Sidelines" lyric and sing along for the finale. Its a great way to close the album, and ranks at the top of the album for me, because it has lasting power.

Viginti Tres is pointless to me. Its just a sound. While I think that that 5 and a half minutes devoted to it could have been put to better use, the boys will do what they want. It's just a sound, and I don't care too much for it.

So you may be confused. I end up giving props to only half the CD really, but still give it 5 stars. Well Tool's music is more thought provoking then some. It's still miles from what it could be. Tool's a gateway band, always will be. You listen to Tool, you start to find new music. Therefore, no album is less than a 5 star rating because it will open your mind to new things, and thats NEVER a bad thing. That said, this album is actually great. Though I don't care for Vicarious or Rosetta Stoned, doesn't mean that they are awful. Plus, its just my opinion on them, I've spoken to some people who are absolutely in love with both songs, They never grow tired of it. That's good. Some of us find something worth keeping in it and thats good.

Personally, Jambi alone gets 5 stars. I think its one of the greatest Tool songs ever written, and The Pot is fantastic too. Right in Two, with Intension tagged on to it, is another classic Tool song. And the Wings duo will remain at the top of any Tool fans list because of its intensity. Overall, this album doesn't disappoint me, and its well worth waiting five years for. Slightly disappointing I'll admit, but compared to everything else, its okay to not wow us amazingly again. Its got stiff competition, and for a group that comes from an era that is nonexistent anymore (seriously, how many 90's rock bands are still around?), Tool maintains there grasp on music, and being genius musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2007-06-30

Tool surprises me again. This band has not reached their peak yet in terms of performance, and in my opinion are one of the best progressive/hard rock bands performing today.

The Wailin' Jennys--Cara Luft, Nicky Mehta, and Ruth Moody--are three Canadian singer-songwriters with already established careers who first got together for a one-shot gig in 2002 and, to their surprise, discovered that their voices blended in an almost magical harmony. They decided to put their solo endeavors aside for a while to see where this gift would take them, and the appealing folk-pop vibe of 40 Days is the result. They perform an eclectic selection of material, including covers of John Hiatt's "Take It Down" and Neil Young's "Old Man" plus lovely versions of the old English folk songs "The Parting Glass" and "Saucy Sailor." However, it's the original songs that stand out most. As you would expect, each Jenny has a distinctive voice and writing style, but the amazing vocal harmonies help Luft's spiky, rock-inflected songs, Mehta's poetic and mysterious meditations, and Moody's lively Celtic-tinged melodies blend into a seamless whole. --Michael John Simmons

Album Description

"40 Days" represents the exciting US debut of Ruth Moody, Nicky Mehta and Cara Luft...three young Canadian performers whose harmonies and songwriting have been called "spine-tingling," "angelic," and "breathtaking." The group was formed more-or-less as a lark...all three Winnipeg women were established solo artists and admired in Canadian folk circles for their singing and gifted songwriting...and the so-called "supergroup" was meant to last for one night only at a local folk club. As fate would have it, the audience went crazy for them performing in that configuration and a Canadian folk phenomenon was born. With their stirring voices and richly emotional original songs, the Jennys have created one of the most memorable and tantalizing first albums in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening to this CD!.......2007-07-05

We were first introduced to the Wailin' Jennys on A Prairie Home Companion last year and found their songs and their sound to be so memorable that we purchased tickets to see them in concert locally this past May. We have since purchased both the 40 Days and Firecracker CDs, and just can't recommend them enough. Incredible harmonies in beautifully written, inspiring, timeless songs.

5 out of 5 stars Record of the Year.......2007-03-23

If you've not heard this album, you're missing a masterpiece. The harmony is stunning, the song selection fabulous, the arrangements are subtle, tasteful and appropriately understated, and the overall production a huge success. It's my best find from last year and one of my all time favorites albums ever.

4 out of 5 stars very nice.......2007-01-15

5 out of 5 stars Nice Debut .......2006-11-10

A folk group, which calls Winnipeg, Manitoba home. Nice blend of songs, beautiful arrangements. Of particular note is the cover of Niel Youngs song "Old Man." Worth the price for any folk music fan.

5 out of 5 stars Joyful.......2006-11-05

Having come across the Jenny's quite by accident while listening to the Garrison Keiler Radio Show on BBc Radio 7. Their harmonising was sublime and prompted me to get on line and buy all their CDs immediatelly. To say I have not been disappointed is an understatement. These girls are the best.

The Moody Blues' second album was also their first of what would be a succession of "concept" albums. Inspired by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper and utilizing the London Festival Orchestra primarily for epic instrumental interludes between songs, Days of Future Passed moved the Birmingham band away from its early R&B roots (as displayed on its debut album with soon-to-depart future Wings member Denny Laine) into uncharted rock territory, making them the early pioneers of both classical and progressive rock. The concept of the 1967 release was very simple, tracing a day in the life from dawn to night, from awakening to sleep. The seven tracks spawned two hit singles--"Tuesday Afternoon" and "Nights in White Satin" (which hit No. 2 four years after the LP's original release) and a prog-rock cottage industry. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars timeless... or, ahead of it's time.......2007-06-21

`Cold hearted orb that rules the night... removes the colors from our sight... yet we decide which is right.... and which is an illusion."

Such are the spoken words which close this remarkable recording... leaving one almost breathless at the consideration of that thought.
There is some music that is simply timeless. Music imbued with a such a quality that sets it outside of the confines of time and space... a specialness that is unique among other works. The Moody Blues landmark recording, `Days of Future Passed' is such a special piece of music. It is both timeless and far ahead of it's time.

Technically their second recording release, (following `Go Now' with mostly different band personnel), for all practical purposes, `Days' is their debut album with the addition of the mainstay songwriters Justin Hayward and John Lodge. This record is astounding in every respect, from it's concept to it's orchestration to the originality, beauty and diversity of it's songs. The time period of it's release, 1967, was the absolute peak in creativity in the music world. And indeed, this album has no predecessor in terms of sound or style. It's an original new creation, and was executed with exquisite artistic brilliance.

This was the record that launched the careers of the Moody Blues, and it was a hard act to follow, probably especially for them. Although they went on to record many more great albums... In Search for the Lost Chord, On the Threshold of a Dream, A Question of Balance, To Our Children's Children's Children, EDBDF, Seventh Sojourn, and on..... most would agree they never exceeded the beauty put down on this one.

A very young Justin Hayward opens the suite singing `Dawn is a feeling...' and the rest is a trip that takes you along through a day with a variety of moods and emotions. What is amazing is the quality of maturity in his voice, yet he was only 18 when this was recorded. Amazing. The two most recognizable songs on the record, also Justin Hayward tunes, Tuesday Afternoon and Nights in White Satin remain the strongest Moody Blues songs in their 40+ year history.

The orchestration score complements the songs beautifully with a variety of segway pieces that connect the tunes in such a way as to lead one through a story. The score is credited to a Peter Knight, but research as to who this guy is leads to a dead end. I later read in an offbeat book that Peter Knight was one of many stage names for a man named Chuck Hamil, the brother of actor Mark Hamil who starred in the original Star Wars movie trilogy. It seems Chuck Hamil is/was an amazingly gifted musician who also wrote, sang and recorded many other radio hit records of the late sixties, such as those credited to a Scott McKenzie's `San Francisco' and others (Gary Puckett?)... but he never used his real name. Interesting details!

Regardless, the origins of the album seem to be shrouded in mystery. But the quality of the music speaks for itself. I always have felt there was something special about the music of the Moody Blues. This is the album that sparked that interest, which has never died since. Great art stands the test of time, and this certainly does.

5 out of 5 stars The Moody Blues.......2007-06-10

This is the best of the The Moody Blues. I have this on a LP record,Cass, and now a cd.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta love these guys.......2007-06-08

This is the kind of stuff that should be considered for elevator music in heaven! Still great after 40 years.

5 out of 5 stars You Gotta Have It.......2007-06-06

Days of Future Passed, the first effort of the 'Phase 2 Moody Blues', is one of those landmark albums that should be in everyone's music library, Moody Blues fan or not. Having hardly no exposure at all to the world of classical/orchestral-type music, I have to admit I haven't much of an ear for it. Frankly, my musical tastes just aren't that highbrow, so I realize I'm not able to fully appreciate this album. That is my biggest obstacle in truly embracing the whole of 'Days' for the masterpiece that it is. Oh, I dearly love the Moodies songs, but the rest, well let's just say I'm getting there. The more I hear it, the more I like the orchestral parts, what I as a simple country girl have always called Beethoven/rich people music. At this point in my musical self-education, I have to heartily give DOFP my big ol' stamp of approval. In reviewing, I will briefly(or not so) give my thoughts on each song along with a yay or nay vote.
1 'The Day Begins'- NO. Haven't fully acquired a taste for poetry or chamber music- yet. Sorry Graeme.
2 'Dawn is a Feeling'- YES. Mike Pinder's opener is just lovely and well-sung by Justin Hayward but Mike's voice wasn't in top form for his part, which fortunately was brief. Pinder has said that his reference to the "smell of grass" wasn't about pot, but looking back he realized it fit well with the times.
2 'Another Morning'- YES. Another Ray Thomas number. It had to grow on me, as I normally don't care for "kiddie" songs. He does such an outstanding job vocally that I had to like it.
3 'Peak Hour'- YES. John Lodge rocks me with this great song. It's the overlooked gem on 'Days'. I had read that it was the Moodies loudest number played live for many years. Wish I could have been there to experience it. Great lyrics- if I could just find the originals. I've seen about 5 versions of it online! Lodgie and mates sing it superbly and slap play the fool out of it.
4 'Tuesday Afternoon'- YES. What can I say about this classic that hasn't already been said before? I think it's THE best Hayward number on DOFP. Justin singing this song is a little slice of heaven in my headphones.
5 'Evening Time to Get Away'- YES. Oh yes, yes, yes. Hearing John's lovely voice- especially his falsetto- at it's best is enough for this gal. "Working, living it brings. Only way to have those things. Toiling has bought too many tears". Lodge simply nailed it on this timeless ode to the working class.
6 'The Sunset'- YES. Good song- only wish Pinder would've had a longer part to sing this time. He sounded great.
7 'Twilight Time'- YES. Ray redeems himself VERY well here. His subtle vocal literally carresses the lyrics- and my ears.
8 'Nights In White Satin'- YES. Brilliant song and THE ONE Hayward will forever be known for. Though I love it, it's not my fave of his. This song manages to be both beautiful and haunting all at once. Lodge's almost eerie-sounding, wailing chorus parts never fail to get me. WOW.
9 'Late Lament'. NO. Another poem by Graeme Edge. My sincere apologies Edgie. It's not you, really. It's me. You're a fantastic drummer to be sure!

'Days Of Future Passed' will forever be known as THE record that launched The Moody Blues onto the world stage. It did so for a very good reason: it's a ground-breaking, magnificent recording, created by the minds, hands and voices of five talented young men simply doing what they love- making great music.

A side project doesn't usually hit gold, especially when said project is a quirky virtual collective fronted by cartoon characters. But the first, self-titled album by Gorillaz--the brainchild of illustrator Jamie Hewlett and Blur frontman Damon Albarn--actually hit platinum and turned into a surprise worldwide hit. Naturally expectations were a lot higher for Gorillaz's sophomore effort, but Demon Days actually is even better than its predecessor. With producer Dan "the Automator" Nakamura gone, Albarn, a.k.a. 2D, has paired up with DJ Danger Mouse (responsible for the infamous Grey Album that illegally mixed the Beatles and Jay-Z) to steer the musical ship, while a whole new slew of guests enlivens the proceedings. Albarn has described Demon Days as being darker, but there's a real kooky dance-party vibe coursing through the CD. Despite its somber tone, "Kids with Guns" is lifted by a killer bass line, for instance, while the catchy first single, "Feel Good Inc," is augmented by an appealing contribution from De La Soul. Other noteworthy guests include Roots Manuva and Tricky collaborator Martina Topley-Bird on the dubby "All Alone" and Happy Mondays singer Shaun Ryder on the bouncy "DARE." And yet it's a 69-year-old actor who gets to deliver the most baffling contribution--just listen to Dennis Hopper's spoken-word narrative on "Fire Coming Out of the Monkey's Head." 5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to the 1 and 2 star's.......2007-07-09

They are a bunch of idiots who bought this album for the radio friendly singles. This is easily one of the most complex, intelligent, and layered albums of the decade. A addictive mix of Rock, hip hop, and brains, everysong on this album is brilliant, the only low being the far to long "Every Planet We Reach is Dead".
I've seen some people complain about it being depressing. SO WHAT? It's not emo, just honest, and truthful.
For me the album is about the wrongs of modern society, But interpratation seem to vary, with the Iraq war in the lead. Far from the "collection of random sounds" some would have you think. Yes, they are heavy on the synths, but the songs are brilliant on musical level as well, as the lyrical.
I think this album is supposed to take place in some kind of apocalyptic/and or totalitarian future, by the way.

Just so you know, lyrically this is a VERY bleak album, barely letting up in DARE

Last Living Souls 4/5- Simple opener, asking if they are the last good people left on this Earth, finally deciding that they must be with the line "Yeah, we're the last livin' souls"

Kids With Guns 5/5-My favorite track, Killer bass line, either about how we let society turn ourselves to monsters(So they're turning yourselfs to monster's/Setting yourself on fire/Turning you all to monsters/ Its all desire), or the Iraq War depending on your interpretation of the album as a whole

O' Green World 4/5-A song about either mans destruction of our only planet through polution, or mans destruction of its only planet through nuclear war. I said the album was bleak

Dirty Harry 5/5- A initially light and jumpy song, until you realize that the lightness is supposed to symbolize how those of us who have not been in war are innoncent and iggnorant of the horror AND the Iraq war(I need a gun/To keep myself from harm/ those poor people/ are burning in the sun/...I need a gun/'cus all I do is dance) The act of dancing in the song represent innocence, and about half way through, one of the best rap's i've ever heard comes out, this time from the point of view of a soldier ending in a few lines aimed directly at bush, and a couple of line of him remembering when he could dance,or be innocent(The war is over/So said the speaker/with the flight suit on/Maybe to him I'm just a pawn /So he can advance /Remember when I used to dance /Man, all I want to do is dance)

Feel Good inc. 5/5- You all know how it sounds. Its about how we surround ourselves with stuff that we think makes us feel good, because the corporations(symbolized by the De La Soul, the rapper) tell us so. But in the end all we need to be happy is purity and love(I.e. the windmill)

El Manana 5/5-Slow, and mournful. About a lost love, or maybe a soldier who commited atrocities so bad he's god has forsaken him

Every Planet We Reach is Dead 3/5- I like this song, but its drags on, and I don't mind a long song, but this DRAAAGGGGSSSS. So I have no clue what its about, because i skip it :P

And i'm stopping there, you can figure the rest out yourself. My fingers are hurt and i'm tired.

Oh, and it passes generational barriers as well, my 50 year old grandma loves this album to! Then again, she's not into what you would think of as "Old person music"(Frank Sinatra FTW!) so don't go buying it as a gift for you grammy.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful.......2007-07-01

i've been a fan of gorillaz since my college years. they've stayed true to their style. but of course you already know that or you wouldn't be considering buying it and reading reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than their first album.......2007-06-27

Every song on here is unique, catchy, and just plain fun. If you enjoyed their first album, you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars A Smooth, Haunting Album.......2007-06-17

I recently reviewed Gorillaz first self titled album, giving it two stars.

Who can say why things happen the way they do, but somewhere between the release of their first album, and their second, the Gorillaz got their s~~t together.

For the first sound of 2D singing "Are we the last living souls?" to the last haunting sounds of the choir singing on "Demon Days" aside from a slight misstep, this album takes off and doesn't look back.

Each song has its own distinctiveness, but a thread of melancholy invades almost every second of the album, due almost entirely to Damon "2D" Albarn's raspy, intentionally tired sounding voice. This voice fits perfectly with 2D on the Gorillaz music videos, who looks like he's either been crying, or high on pot. LOL

Its hard to choose favorites, each song is a gem (accept, perhaps, for White Lights, but that, I'm sure, is debateable), but if I were to base it on the songs I listen to the most, it would be Last Living Souls, Kids With Guns, Feel Good INC, La Manana, All Alone, and Dare. As you can see that is like half the album, and I definately would have to point out, the other soungs are great themselves.

"Demon Days" utilizes, in a way the first album was unable to do, a perfect blend of solid beats, smooth vocals, and strong raps. I bought this album a couple of years after its release so the only question now is: when does the next one come out!?

4 out of 5 stars Not as varied or as timeless/great as the first CD, but still a pretty solid effort........2007-06-16

The first Gorillaz CD is to Gorillaz as Nevermind was to Nirvana. It is the timeless classic that can be listened to over and over again without a likely chance of growing tired of it. While this CD is less of an acquired taste than the first CD is, and is still very good, it's not as good.

Danger Mouse pales in comparison to Dan the Automater's producing skills in the first work. The reason for this is in the variety. Danger Mouse has set a tone that plays throughout the CD, with each and every track. Dan the Automater on the other hand, delivered a CD with so much variety there would have to be something for everyone. Whereas CD 1 covered the broad range of reggae, Latin, punk, pop, rock, dance, rap, hip-hop, DJ, ska, and just about every type of music available, this CD sticks its feet in firm territory and never moves.

CD 1 is for the music in general lover, CD 2 is for those like the one particular sound that can be heard in most of the Gorillaz more recent videos. If you had to choose between the two, I'd go with CD 1 first, and then maybe get CD 2 later, when you get the chance.

Just make sure CD 1 comes with Dracula, Suzuki Left Hand Method, and the Clint Eastwood/19-2000 remixes as well... as most of original Gorillaz albums these days should have. You wanna get the most for your money after all.

These new recordings of mostly recent Gill compositions are the culmination of a project aimed at recording four distinct albums: rock, romance, vintage honky-tonk, and acoustic. The Rockin' Record, virtually perfect from start to finish, begins with "Workin' on a Big Chill," its swampy groove straight out of John Fogerty and a showcase for Gill's guitar virtuosity--a groove he resumes on "Cowboy Up," with cameo harmonies from Gretchen Wilson. "Sweet Thing" and a duet with Rodney Crowell on "Nothin' for a Broken Heart" pulsate with Chuck Berry intensity that contrasts with the solid, '60s Memphis groove of "Bet It All on You." The Reason Why showcases Gill's legendary ease with ballads, several of them enhanced by creative string arrangements by David Campbell (Beck's father), including "What You Don't Say" with LeAnn Rimes and "The Memory of You" with Trisha Yearwood. The stunning "Faint of Heart," a remarkably sultry jazz duet with Diana Krall, could become a standard. Some Things Never Get Old revisits classic fiddle-steel honky-tonk, music Gill has long reverenced and referenced. "This New Heartache" is straight out of Ray Price. Gill and Patty Loveless tear up "Out of My Mind" and Allison Krauss and Dan Tyminski join in for the waltz "I Can't Let Go." "Don't Pretend with Me" honors Ernest Tubb's honky-tonk primitivism. Little Brother, all-acoustic and often bluegrass-flavored, shines from beginning to end. Along with "Molly Brown," a stark cautionary about racial violence, Gill sings both "Cold Gray Light of Dawn" and "Give Me the Highway" with the Del McCoury Band. He and Guy Clark close it out with "Almost Home." Despite outstanding past efforts, Gill--one of the top hitmakers of the '90s--hasn't had a Top Ten single since 2000. No matter. His talents and the heart he puts into his writing, singing, and picking remain at their peak. This stellar collection proves it--four times over. --Rich Kienzle

Album Description

In an unmatched outpouring of virtuosity and energy, Vince Gill has created a 4-CD set of 43 new and original songs that MCA Records will release Oct. 17 under the title These Days. The collection is an artistic tour de force that displays Gill's mastery of lyrics and musical styles, ranging from traditional country and bluegrass to jazz and rock.

"I started looking at all these songs I had," the amiable superstar explains, "and going, `Shoot, I want to record that song, and I want to record that song.' I just kept checking with the other musicians to see if they were available. I had no deadlines, no rules or anything like that. So I just kept trying songs."

To accompany him on this ambitious undertaking, Gill turned both to artists he knew and had worked with before and to those whose music he admired at a distance. "I never try to fill up my records with famous people," Gill says. "I try to fill them up with the most talented people I can find on the face of the earth." By the time the project was completed, that group included Sheryl Crow, Bonnie Raitt, Diana Krall, Rodney Crowell, Phil Everly, the Del McCoury Band, Emmylou Harris, John Anderson, Lee Ann Womack, Jenny Gill, Amy Grant, LeAnn Rimes, Gretchen Wilson, Guy Clark, Trisha Yearwood, Bekka Bramlett, Michael McDonald, steel-guitar master Buddy Emmons and many other musical standouts.

Initially, Gill planned to pare down the songs he'd recorded to a single album. Then, in one of the studios he used, he spotted some Beatles memorabilia and recalled that the Fab Four had routinely released multiple albums within the same year.

Gill took the idea to Luke Lewis, Universal Music Group Nashville Co-Chairman, who totally supported his notion of multiple releases. In fact, Lewis came up with an even more radical strategy: he told Vince to go and record more songs that explore his passion for acoustic sounds and release a 4-CD set. And that's exactly what happened.

Gill co-produced These Days with famed keyboardist John Hobbs and sound engineering whiz Justin Niebank.

A lot of the songs are vintage Vince Gill. His guitar playing is nothing short of spectacular. The duets are wonderful. His guest singers blend well with Vince's, oh so sweet, tenor. I love the album, but give it only four stars because so many of the songs are featured on albums I already own.

5 out of 5 stars Inspired by negative reviews.......2007-05-21

Before ordering this CD set, I read most of the reviews on Amazon. A couple of them were very negative. However, I just couldn't believe in a "bad" recording session from Vince Gill. Especially with the great stars who collaborated as guests on many of the cuts.

Well, the good news is the negative reports were just wrong. I like these CD's, there are four in the box set, more every time I listen to them. An excellent product and a great addition to any music collection that loves ballads, country, bluegrass, and yes: Vince!!

5 out of 5 stars These Days by Vince Gill.......2007-05-13

This item is a must buy for all Vince Gill fans. We purchased it after seeing in Vince in concert. The concert was great, but you can't have that all the time. His range as a musician is evident throughout this 4 CD set. Plus, the musicians he surrounds himself with make this a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Vince Gill - These Days.......2007-05-13

I'm a long time fan of Vince Gill but this album is his best. A must have for any Vince Gill fan!!

5 out of 5 stars Simply awesome !!!.......2007-05-12

This CD set is well worth the money. Actually, it's priced very reasonable. There are alot of new songs. All 4 CD's are excellant.
Again, Vince Gill delivers !!

5 out of 5 stars One of the BESTmodern rock bands.......2007-06-10

I recently went to a Nickelback concert and Three Days Grace was opening for them. I fell in love with the band hearing their music at the concert and felt that Nickelback should opening for Three Days Grace, not the other way around!

Top Songs For Me:

5 out of 5 stars Three Days Grace C.D........2007-06-01

Great CD, Shipping took a little longer than expected, but it was worth it. I love it.

4 out of 5 stars goes downhill after "Home".......2007-05-24

Canada is famous for producing mainly three things: Nickelback, insanely cheap prescriptions, and Three Days Grace. This quartet of Canadian rockers really know how to keep you listening... til about track 4. Then, the rest of the CD is just filler. Here are my favorite tracks, in order:

1) Home: In my opinion, the best Three Days Grace song ever. I really identify with some of the lyrics: "I'll be coming home just to be alone... no matter how hard I try, you're never satisfied... I can hardly wait til you get off my case!!" Relatively easy to learn on guitar, too.

2) Just Like You: Second-best TDG song ever. Also, the only song I can do halfway good on drums.

3) Burn: Average, but still good.

4) (I Hate) Everything About You: Way too overplayed, but still a good song; I really like the video.

Other than tracks 1-4, you really don't need to get this debut CD. It's good, yeah, but it can be better.

4 out of 5 stars 3DG's Eponymous Debut........2007-05-16

During the summer of 2003, Canadian group Three Days Grace put out their first full-length effort, garnering them widespread attention and propelling them into mainstream success. 3DG play a brand of post-grunge modern rock, and they've certainly become a favorite modern contemporary of mine in that vein. This album seethes with emotive energy, adhering to themes of bitter losses, to maintaining individuality, and tug-o-war relationships. While the songwriting may not be considerably groundbreaking, it weaves with the melodic choruses to make for some distinct and memorable tracks. While the singles are strong in their own right, noted favorites here are the up-tempo and forceful "Scared," the false re-assurance of "Let You Down," the hollow resilience of "Drown," and the shot of redemption found in "Wake Up." "Take Me Under" is also hauntingly catchy, starting off slowly, with the "Take me all the way" verse that embedded itself into my mind for some time, before bursting into the chorus. And "Overrated" can be deciphered depending on the listener's point of view.

When it comes to modern rock, you really can't go wrong here. Three Days Grace have made a name for themselves since their debut, and I'm sure they'll be conducting a strong following for years to come.

4 out of 5 stars Three Days Grace.......2007-05-15

This album is an excellent debut disk for Three Days Grace. Their hits come early in the album and the undiscovered songs is a jewel that people that only download their music will never find. However some of the music could be helped out if it was more complex. If you liked this CD then I would buy Three Day's Grace's sophmore album One-X Which they bring in a second guitar player, and expand on their strengths.

4 out of 5 stars Good stuff, not the greatest.......2007-07-11

This is a tough one to review. Zepplin was indisputably a great band, and I'm a fan, so it would seem natural to just give it a 5. But I don't quite feel this collection enough for that. The good songs on this collection are awesome, some of the best rock from the 70s for sure. These guys had great talent and great music and lyrics. However, the collection's not as complete as it could be and some of the chosen songs are lesser-knowns that are kind of long. The songs that are longer kind of slow things down and gets a little tedious at times. The Zepplin fan should get this collection as a way to have a bunch of the really good tunes in one location, that's the chief strength here.

5 out of 5 stars Early Days, Better Days.......2007-07-05

Was impressed with the album. Was missing a few songs that I really wanted, but over all, it was worth my money.

4 out of 5 stars A nice concise jolt of Zeppelin.......2007-03-23

I really wanted to give this 5 stars, but.....I couldn't. Because.....

I have to first agree with the reviewer who commented about Heartbreaker, Livin' Lovin' Maid, and Misty Mountain Hop being excluded from this set. I felt similarly about those songs, as well as Thank You, which, as obscure as it was, I have always counted as one of my favorites.
But, on the other side of the coin, when do we ever find a greatest hits compilation that has each and every song we want? Never.
That said, I went and bought this CD because my young son is very much into drumming and is now becoming familiar with great rock drummers. So I knew he had to get to know Bonzo, and when I saw this in the store I grabbed it up because it had a really good lineup. When we popped it into the dashboard on the way home - wow - we both really enjoyed it, he was air drumming in the back seat like a lunatic and I was just thoroughly enjoying one song after another. If it included the above songs, it would be a true stairway to heaven for me. This set is great, highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Great for introduction to Zeppelin.......2006-08-10

The Early Days, were the introduction to Led Zeppelin for me. The Latter Days came shortly after. The reason I say these two albums are great (especially the first of the two) is how well they introduced someone to the band. The Early Days, when I first got it, I realized every single song on the CD was an absolute masterpiece and within a week, Zeppelin had surpassed GNR on my favourite all-time band. The complete studio albums came soon after.

I understand why an older fan of Led Zeppelin would be disappointed with this; it misses a few major hits such as Ramble On, Heartbreaker, Over the Hills and Far Away, and The Rain Song (these songs could have still fit onto the two albums without passing the 80-minute CD limit). However, I find this almost a good thing, because it led me to not end up disappointed when getting their studio albums, realizing that there were even more masterpieces than just the ones on the greatest hits, for example: the ones listed above, Living Loving Maid, Tangerine, and all the remaining songs on the fourth album.

With such little new music as great as once was, it's becoming more necessary for younger music-listeners such as me, to look into classic rock like Zeppelin. There was no greater way than by getting the Early Days and the Latter Days.

And, how much better to have all the songs in their albums' order on a greatest hits compilation, yet to still have it end on the uncomparible Stairway to Heaven. Great job.

4 out of 5 stars Leaves out too many great songs........2006-07-24

If this is a "best of", then why are average songs here when Zep has so many great ones?
Here are ones that NEED to be in a best of for Zeppelin that were omitted here.

-Ramble On
-Heartbreaker / Livin Lovin Maid
-Over The Hills And Far Away\
-Dyer Maker
-The Ocean
-Fool In The Rain

Overall it's a good collection that has all their biggest songs, but it still has some average songs and is missing a lot of great songs.

Buy it for a good overview of their career.

Florida's brilliant singer-songwriter Sam Beam expands Iron & Wine from solo project to a gaggle of friends and family on slide guitar, percussion, and backing vocals on his second album. Fans need not worry--the hushed immediacy and rich melodies remain the focus--but new flavors abound. For instance, the strange "Cinder And Smoke" sounds like a collaboration (with banjos of course) between America, Robert Wyatt and Low. Meanwhile, "On Your Wings," "Free Until They Cut Me Down," and "Teeth in the Grass" showcase a brooding, earthy, Southern-rock-on-laudanum side that the band had previously only demonstrated in concert. It's rare when an artist who's become known for bedroom recordings makes the transition to the studio to produce work that's better--Daniel Johnston, Lou Barlow, and Liz Phair all made their defining moments crouched above a cassette recorder at home. But Beam is the exception to the rule, as he has easily bested himself on the second Iron & Wine album. --Mike McGonigal

Album Description

Listening to Our Endless Numbered Days makes plain Sam's deft touch with words and melody; one that allows him to turn out stories about love, loss, faith, or the lack of it that are at once personal and universal, set to music that is sweetly haunting and timeless.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars What "country" music should be........2007-06-02

Most would probably not label Iron & Wine as country music, yet to me their music fits that title better than most artists that are labeled as such. Not only the lyrics, but the atmosphere of the music overall just perfectly illustrates walking barefoot down a country road, or sitting on the porch at sunset with a glass of lemonade. This really just sounds like the country, and even though I live in the big city/suburbs, this album just really takes me there, in a way that stuff like Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw definitely do not.

The sole mastermind of Iron & Wine is Samuel Beam, an unassuming fellow with an extremely simple, yet extremely beautiful approach to music. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, his wispy vocals, and the occasional banjo, Beam comes off very much like what Nick Drake might have sounded like, had he grown up in the rural south. The feel overall is somewhat similar to Drake, but with a warmer, more down-home kind of vibe. There's also a great deal of Simon and Garfunkel influence there as well, most evident on songs like "Love and Some Verses" and "Each Coming Night". However, despite all these comparisons, there's really nothing quite like this.

Musically, this is just the perfect album to relax to. It's extremely mellow and laid-back throughout, and the closest it comes to "rocking" is on "Free Until They Cut Me Down", which is still pretty laid-back. The melodies are catchy and memorable, and the musicianship, while simple, is top-notch. Perhaps my favorite song here is the mesmerizing "Cinder and Smoke", which actually took a few listens to really grow on me. It's not as readily ear-catching as most of the rest, but it's really beautiful, with its female backing vocals, and odd hypnotic chanting outro. You might know "Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Naked As We Came" from the Dennis Quaid movie "In Good Company", which are both excellent as well (the latter being the most Nick Drake-sounding song here). Really though, every song here is great, and distinctive unto itself. The only bad thing about this album is that it's over much too soon.

So, whether you're from the country, or you're surrounded by concrete and steel, Iron & Wine will take you to a rural paradise from which you'll never want to leave.

4 out of 5 stars Mediation in the fields.......2007-05-22

Sam Beam makes intimately personal music that is oddly impersonal. While these bittersweet songs often ring from universal themes, I sometimes feel like they were straight out of my mind. That is a really neat trick, considering that this genre of folk has a tendency for navel gazing. To that extent, the second CD from Beam's Iron and Wine ranks with the likes of Elliot Smith and the late Nick Drake. These are songs that get inside of your head and stay there.

While that won't certainly be to everyone's taste (a few of my friends rate this kind of music as barely above the level of Dentist Office Muzak), the ambiance of Beam's Southern stoicism is like a contemplative walk through a field of high grass. There are songs of love and death ("Sodom South Georgia" and "Free Until They Cut Me Down") simple life and love ("Sunset Soon Forgotten" and "Passing Afternoon") set to guitar, banjo and Dobro, all sung in Beam's hushed and melodious voice. Like Ray LaMontagne has in the past couple of years (or even Leonard Cohen before them), Beam is writing deeply poetic songs that are just begging to be covered or placed in a movie soundtrack to offer context.

Recommended for fans of Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen, Ray LaMontagne, Will Oldham and Bonnie Prince Billie.

5 out of 5 stars Defining "the sublime".......2007-03-30

If you've ever wondered what the definition of "the sublime" is, listen to "Passing Afternoon," the last track on this perfect album.

I can't write a definition of "the sublime."

But I know that it's achieved in the last 30 seconds of that song.

4 out of 5 stars Alternative Folk.......2007-01-23

Great cd for those of you folk fans who like a twist. Quiet, moody and slightly eclectic. I was pleasantly surprised. Interesting lyrics, good songwriting, and vocals that are pleasing to the ear. A great cd for any collection.

5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2007-01-11

Cd was good overall but the edges seem to be damaged...not by this seller but by when the cd was made
