Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

This is a grand list of songs from the original musical when it was first introduced in England. The songs from ABBA are very recognizable even if you haven't seen the show. But, making a trip to NY to see the Broadway production is a plus. ENJOY!

I used this CD as part of a dance history class on American Modern Dance, in conjunction with a DVD on dance pioneer Martha Graham. The music stands alone, and my students got a bit of music history along with their dance history.

This CD is one of my favorites in my classical collection. Several years ago, I borrowed this recording from the library, and enjoyed it so much that I went out and bought my own Copland CD. I got the CD containing the New York Philharmonic's performance of Appalachain Spring (conducted by Bernstein), but was sorely disappointed. After a few months of searching (this was pre-Amazon days), I tracked down this CD and bought it. The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is superb. I highly recommend this CD for any Copland fan, or anyone who wants to have a "token" classical CD.

Programmed similarly to the Beethoven for Babies collection, this set of Bach compositions runs the emotional gamut, from the gently eye opening to the jumpy arm raising, collecting each set of pieces under a thematic header. The first several selections ("Waking Up") feature solo piano works that come directly from Bach's more pedagogic works, compositions intended for students to use as exercises to loosen their touch. Played superbly by pianist Sviatoslav Richter, as well as the Romero brothers (Pepe and Celedonio) on warm guitar, these compositions urge the ear to open. And then you come the pieces gathered under the "Playtime" heading: jazz pianist John Lewis picks up a couple pieces, as do the folks in Canadian Brass. Then the mood shift heads back to the sleepyhead state with "Winding Down" and "And So to Bed," each of which slows the tempo and quiets the passion to a doze. Our favorite CD for all occasions.......2005-05-15

This is absolutely my favorite CD that we bought for our baby! We've bought quite a few classical-music-for-baby compilations, and this is far and away the best. The music is fun, flirty, stimulating, sweet, and beautifully performed. It's not syrupy, dumbed-down, or played on electronic instruments like some of those other compilations. We listen to it all the time. I now buy this as a baby shower gift for everyone I know!

You can't beat Bach. If classical music is the thing you want for your baby, get this CD. If you are single and have no kids, but classical music is your thing, get this CD. This is fantastic reading music, study music (regardless of what you're studying), and just plain relaxing music. I also highly recommend the CD, BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN 1.

Classical, Jazz and Opera Bach all in one.......2001-05-30

This is a versatile collection in terms of composition, performance and layout. Comparing to most of CD with classical selections for baby, this edition is more nutritious and rich on musical experience. Genre wise, the piano solo, concerti, chamber and opera are all included. Performance wise, it is absolute a feast -- Sir Neville Marrier conducting Academy of St. Martin-in-the fields, Jazz Pianist John Lewis delivering the charming and uplifting variation, and Kiri Te Kanawa's heavenly creamy voice. The combination of these musicians and recordings is a decision with great artistic sensibility. The layout is perfectly arranged -- from the waking up, playtime and to the bed. This is not just another CD juggles some pieces together from a brandy composer. For a more serious editing of baby music, this shall be something as a guideline.

Between 1925 and 1929, Louis Armstrong created one of the first great bodies of work in jazz. While he worked regularly as a soloist with big bands, he began his career as a leader with the first all-star studio group in jazz, the Hot Five. The other four musicians were Armstrong's wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, on piano; Johnny Dodds on clarinet; Kid Ory on trombone; and Johnny St. Cyr on banjo. The music's first great soloist, Armstrong was reshaping jazz by sheer improvisational magic, gradually diminishing the role of the traditional New Orleans ensemble with the clarion brilliance of his trumpet. Possessing an uncanny blend of exuberance and creativity, he combined virtuosic declarations with a talent for the subtlest shifts in phrasing and melodic variation, creating rich emotional statements that could hint at loss in the midst of joy or the promise of better things in the most sorrowful blues. The band expands here, to the Hot Seven and larger ensembles, and it gains soloists who applied Armstrong's lessons to their own instruments--musicians such as pianist Earl Hines and trombonist Jack Teagarden--but all come under the imprint of Armstrong's flowering genius, as both trumpeter and singer.

It's almost impossible to overrate this material. It may be the most influential music in jazz history, establishing standards for originality and sustained invention that have rarely been matched. The JSP set is a superb reissue of Armstrong's essential work. The remastering is by John R.T. Davies, widely acknowledged as the dean of engineers in the field of early jazz, and the resultant sound is simply the best this work has ever enjoyed. There are alternate takes of the later material on Columbia Legacy (including Louis in New York and St. Louis Blues), so collectors will want both. But this recording is superior listening, at a price that also makes it an ideal introduction to one of the few titans of jazz. --Stuart Broomer

Hot, indeed!.......2007-04-09

For anyone with even the slightest interest in Jazz, prewar American music, or, for that matter, reorded sound, this box set is a godsend: It's a four-disc collection of just about every recording made by Louis Armstrong between the years of 1925 and 1929- and it costs less than 30 bucks! The songs have been remastered to near perfection- considering that these recordings were made during the Coolidge administration, the sound quality is surprisingly crisp, clear, and sharp as a brand new Zoot Suit. Don't worry, though: The visionaries at JSP have left in just enough background hiss to maintain that glorious Roaring Twenties feel.

Of course, I don't need to tell you how great the music is. It's been written about in all of them fancy music publications, and praised quite wonderfully by the other reivewers here on Amazon. Still, I'd like to join in the general roar of applause by pointing out how awesome these recordings are- they're wild, exuberant, free, and passionate. Each track offers layer upon layer of swirling horns, pounding pianos, chugging banjos, and general toe-tapping frenzy. Instrumental solos spin off in fantastic directions, while ensamble sections are dizzying, glorious, and downright propulsive. The whole thing is enough to make you hearken back to that era of freewheelin' flappers, scandalous speakesies, and the bountiful opportunities for investment in Florida land.

If you give even a fifth of a hoot about 20th century music, get this album right now!!!

Don't touch the hiss!.......2007-03-10

If it was just the music I'm rating, it would of course get a million stars. However, the music is on a remastered CD. "Remastered" generally means getting your oldie jazz sounding as if it's being strangled in a can.
Granted the sound here is "clear" and the bass is a bit boosted. The acoustics, reverb, echo, life and air are however thrown out with the hiss.
Again, I've heard a lot worse than this. But generally, French jazz re-issues are better. Why? Because they leave the hiss!! The catch? The French CD's are either expensive or they contain fewer songs for your money than these cheapo boxed sets.

Music is cornerstone...but the sonics? Mixed feelings........2007-02-09

I'm not going to labor on the fact that this music is fantastic, cornerstone of jazz, indispensible, blah, blah, blah. We all already know that. I want to talk about the sonic quality of these recordings.

I read so much about this John RT Davies guy, who mastered this box set. I heard so many positive things about his skills, particularly in this boxed set, and how the sound is allegedly far superior to the Columbia version. I had to get BOTH to compare. I bought this JSP box set, and the newly revised 2006 edition of the Hot sessions released by Columbia/Legacy/Sony/BMG (the official edition).

The late John RT Davies, who mastered this JSP set is considered so good, that people on Amazon claimed that he mastered this collection from old 78s better than the engineers at Columbia, using the original masters (owned EXCLUSIVELY by Columbia.) Heck, RCA & Columbia thought he was good, as i've seen his name adorning very LEGAL pressings of all sorts of old jazz under the RCA & Columbia labels, right here in the U.S.A. So, he certainly had some clout, and some talent.

Unlike almost every reviewer on here, i do not consider the JSP box set to sound better than the official Columbia release (2006 version). However, i still think it sounds pretty good. There is something important to consider. While Davies is considered a true master at...well, remastering, his work at JSP comes up flawed, because he did not have access to the original masters, which are safely secured in Sony/Columbia/Legacy's vaults. He had to use old 78's (the kind you bought in the store) to make these new masters. So, while he may have picked 78's that were better preserved, and had seen less action, he was still using the next generation of recordings.

When you master from the originals over and over and over again, you tend to add all kinds of artificial pops, clicks, hisses, and such into the original disc (Bing Crosby had to re-record White Christmas in 1947, because the original 1942 recording was pressed so many times, it sounded horrible). Therefore, if you use a pretty clean 78, you can avoid much of that, and come out with a cleaner master to make into a CD. When you add some digital noise removal systems (essentially computer programs), you make them even cleaner, and if done right, still not sacrifice the integrity of the music.

Sounds pretty cut and dry right? The 78's should sound better then, right? Why wouldn't Columbia re-master their collection from old 78's as well? A very important reason, actually. When you copy old 78's, instead of the original pressings, you move at least one generation away from the original performance. Everytime you make a copy of a copy, the sound gets muddier, with less distinction and more distortion. Certainly, with skill and technology, it can be minimalized, but the fact remains.

Soooooooo.......my analysis? The JSP set sounds a tad smoother, with less pops. The bass is a little deeper too, however a bit muddier (slightly distorted). The Columbia set from 2006 DOES have a bit more scratchiness, and the bass is not quite as deep. However, the sound is CLEANER, and...my favorite descriptive word in this whole review...more TRANSPARENT. That's right. Every instrument in the Columbia set is more distinct from all the other instruments. The sound feels light, airy, and alive. The JSP set, while more smooth doesn't have that clarity of the original recordings. They sound more like...well, records.

So, which is better? There's no really correct answer. It's a matter of taste. For ME, the Columbia set wins, hands down. I'm 31 years old. For most of my musical life, i grew up listening to CDs. However, many people have fond memories of what their old collection of vintage records sound like. What you hear on records that you don't hear on CD's is distortion. It's slight, but it's certainly there. Technically, CDs are cleaner, and more accurate representations of the actual music than records ever were. But people have aural memories, and THAT'S the sound they want to hear. It's a very natural, and totally unconscious reaction. We like what we know. Everytime i buy better speakers, amps, etc., i always miss the sound of my old, inferior equipment...for a little while. Then as i use it, my ears adjust to the new sound, and i ADORE it. Anytime i've tried going back to the OLD set-up after that, i had a much stronger negative reaction than i did when going UP in quality. My ears became adjusted to what's better.

So, here's my recommendation:

If you don't have those fond memories of old vinyl or shellac discs, and grew up on CDs, then the Columbia set is 150% better. The sound is cleaner, tighter, more distinct instrumentally, and contains less distortion. You get music that's closer to reality. The drawback of course, is you will hear a bit more crackle, and a tad less bass.

If you DO have those fond memories of the big black discs, and you remember the warm, rounded sound that made you feel like cuddling up in a blanket with a cup of cocoa & a wish on a star, then you really need to get this set. If you also happen to listen to rap in your Escalade, and you like to hear the bass completely distorting, but you think you wanna try some early Satchmo, then you NEED this set. Don't even think about buying the Columbia version. Just remember, while it is smoother, it is also further away from the original performance, so the sound is muddier and less distinct.

I've compared nearly every track on both sets. They both sound pretty good in their own ways. By all means, this IS a set worth owning...for some people. You just have to decide what kind of person you are.

The Definitive Hot Fives & Sevens: Just Perfect!.......2006-12-23

When Louis Armstrong's "Hot Five & Sevens" first came out on CD, I did not hesitate to jump up and purchase these magnificent CD'S. Yes, they were crude and did not have that clear sound that this JSP issue had, but I was so enamored with Armstrong's early greatness, that I jumped up and purchased them. I don't regret it, even if the sound was nowhere near these great recordings. However, after I purchased this boxed set of Armstrong's classic "Hot Fives & Sevens," I never listened to them again. I gave them to a friend who was interested in jazz, but not really sure he liked early jazz. This boxed collection is what I now listen to. There is nothing more I can add as to how GREAT the sound quality is on these terrific recordings. They are just awesome.

I listened to this music when I was a kid, courtesy of my parents, but I never really appreciated just how great Louis Armstrong was until I became an adult. I liked him, but now I love his sound. And as for the earlier issues on CD of this outstanding work by Armstrong, well this is the set to have. I recommend that if you are seeking the best issue out there of the "Hot Fives & Sevens," then purchase this boxed set. It it far superior to any other I have ever heard. There have been some great reviews on this particular CD, and I really don't think there is anything more I can add. However, do youself a favor and listen to these remarkable recordings. They are a must have not only if you are into jazz, but if you like beautiful music period. I like ALL types of music. There are very few genre's of music I do not like, or can listen to. However, I have a special place in my heart [and ears] for music in the 1920s and early 1930s. And this IS music! Highly recommended!

Louis Armstrong and his "Hot Five and Seven" are just brilliant! I resisted buying this set of CDs for years because I felt the quality of music recorded in the 20s was very low. Of course, a jazz collection without these recordings is like the Sistine Chapel without Michelangelo's frescos. JSP Records did a marvelous job of digitally remastering these inspired recordings...no scratching or popping and very little hissing. I can add little to what has already been said about these very reasonably priced discs.

What we have here is the mating of honey and molasses. Or is it the sound of melted butter over gravel? Never mind--sweeter, more joyous music has never been recorded (although the follow-up, Ella and Louis Again, may be even better). You can't listen to these two without smiling. It's such an inevitable pairing that you wonder what titanic forces of nature could have kept Ella and Satchmo apart until they made this record together in 1957, accompanied by the Oscar Peterson trio and Buddy Rich on drums. The songs are standards--extraordinary standards, of course, like "Moonlight in Vermont" and "A Foggy Day"--but nirvana is reached on "Cheek to Cheek." Heaven. --Jim Emerson

Mr. Jazz and the greatest feminine jazz vocalist sing together. Satchmo plays and Ella lilts , and there is such joy and fun in their singing. Both of them gravelly Louie and pure chrystalline Ella give the lyrics of these great songs their full due. One feels them both enjoying what they are doing, and inspired by each other's presence. Perhaps there is even a certain edge of rivalry at some point, the greatest meeting the greatest to see who the greatest really is.
What there is though and Louis also does on his great trumpet solos is the best popular music there is.

This is pure perfection. This is what music is supposed to sound like. It is a spectacular work of art and mere words can't do it justice. I have listened to this album over and over again and never tire of it. Lady Ella and Pops are legends and this legendary meeting between the two not only lived up to everyone's expectations, it actually exceeded them! This is not music that 'grows' on you. This is music that from the moment you hear it you're hooked! It is not just about the two superstars and their unique albeit completely different voices which together create magic. It is also about the legends behind them as well -Oscar Peterson's trio and Buddy Rich on the drums. Not too shabby to say the least. I'm mean seriously folks, how can this be anything but great?

this album has been one of my all time favourites for more than two decades. i have several LP pressings of Ella And Louis. a couple of weeks ago i bought the CD for those moments when i'm too lazy to flip records. yesterday i played the CD for the first time. oh boy. yes, i did tap my feet. and yes, i did grin. but i missed that feeling of intimacy, of that just-feeling-good-feeling that usually sets in the very latest after 2 minutes into this record on vinyl. to make sure i was not hallucinating, i put the LP on the turntable. oh my... the LP sounds so much more immediate and intimate at the same time, i actually get a feeling of being there with them in the studio whereas with the CD (as well as the CD is remastered!) i feel like listening to the two performing. it's hard to put in words how the two formats differ. but the differences are not subtle. and i'm not talking audiophile BS! (i'm waaay past the format war; i listen to CDs as well as to LPs. both have their merits. usually the differences are much less prominent than with this record.)

so here's my advice to all of you still in possession of a turntable: by all means try to find this LP in garage sales, thrift stores, internet auctions and what not. you'll be rewarded with cracks, pops etc, but you won't notice them. no need to buy the pricey audiophile LP-reissues! you will notice, that ella's voice has more nuances and her phrasing is more precise on the LP compared with the CD. could it be that some music is just not made to be digitized?! (just as some cover art is not made to be shrunk to jewel case size - looking at the hilarious picture of ella and louis on a 12" LP cover and on a CD booklet is like day and night!)

i'm sure you can find the LP of Ella And Louis somewhere in your neighborhood or in your nearest thrift store for very little $. if you don't have a record player (anymore) ... hmm ... this LP alone would be more than a good reason to buy one!

last, not least: Ella And Louis was recorded in mono. i have several verve stereo LPs and one original mono pressing. if you find a mono version of the LP, grab it, hold it and don't never let it out of your hands. it SMOKES all (electronically enhanced?) stereo issues. the mono version is so much more open, transparent, direct, intense and natural. i hesitate to use the word, but the early red/yellow label verve mono LP is more organic than all later (re)issues. definitely worth looking for!

it seems to me that the newer the record format, the less intimate this recording becomes. the early mono pressings are better than the stereo LPs, and vintage stereo LPs imho are better than all audiophile LP reissues. (remember, stereo was invented, but not yet commercialized in 1956!) there are several CD masterings, and i also have a SACD of Ella and Louis. the two digital formats are ok, but sound somewhat veiled and slightly metallic compared to the LPs. (and when will Ella And Louis be reissued on DVD-A with 24 bit/192khz? this might be a worthy contender of the LP.)

to sum it up: try to find Ella And Louis on vinyl even if you have the CD. i'mm pretty sure, the rave reviews here on amazon of this one of a kind-recording would even be more enthousiastic, had the reviewers heard the LP... ;-)

Ella and Louis create music that is thoughtful, strong and satisfying!.......2006-10-28

Ella and Louis worked hard to produce this album in 1956; and today many fans of this music still marvel at its beauty. Their voices rich, vibrant and energetic as ever, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong were a duo that remains incomparable. This CD proves it.

Although the CD starts off with the playful "Can't We Be Friends," most of the music on this CD has a slow, relaxed and pensive feel to it that is remarkable. I love their romantic renditions of "Moonlight In Vermont;" "They Can't Take That Away From Me;" "Tenderly" and "Cheek To Cheek." Moreover, they perform very gracefully on "Stars Fell On Alabama." The CD ends with the classic ballad "April In Paris."

I initially thought the CD was too slow and I was not sure if I liked the album. However, the second time I listened I felt more comfortable with the pace. After I listened to the CD the third time I finally understood the importance of the "slower" feel to the songs. The songs become much more romantic, pensive and substantial at this pace.

The liner notes include the original notes from the LP release of this album; and there are nice photos of Ella and Louis on the reverse of the liner notes. In fact, the cover photo of Ella and Louis is my favorite of them together. Ella and Louis appear warm, friendly and approachable--and that's precisely the way the entire album comes across once you get into its "slower" pace. Very clever!

Overall, this is an excellent CD for fans of classic vocals, jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, and duets. It is affordable so it is also a great way to find out if you'll like this kind of music. The quality of the sound is excellent.

The back of this two-CD set may say "File under Lounge," but frankly, lounging will be the very last thing on your mind once you put Louis and Keely on. It's simply impossible to stand still while the duo, backed by Sam Butera and the Witnesses, gets going. When Keely sings "Hey boy, I can really cook," there's a tiny chance she's talking about something that takes place in the kitchen, but the galloping bass line behind her says that she really belongs to the dance floor. Whoo-hee! Cole Porter's "Just One of Those Things" is taken at a frenetic pace--do these people ever pause to breathe? The bulk of this collection was recorded between 1957 and 1962, and it makes for an explosive document of a now-gone era when men in sharp suits hung out at the Copa, babes with pointy rocket-launcher breasts at their arms. I was skeptical about buying a compilation CD set for fear it wouldn't be good... but I was wrong! I can't get enough of these CD's. I do Swing dance and Lindy Hop, and I think some of the tempos to these songs are a bit fast for dancing, but excellent for listening to when you just want to be in a good mood! Keely has a great voice, and Louis is just plane hysterical :D

What a blast!

This was my first introduction to Mr. Prima & Co. What a swingin' treat!

You can tell from each and every cut on this twin CD set that these guys were having fun. Many of the songs have little ad-libs between Louis, Keely Smith, Sam Butera, and the other band members. Louis jumps in between solos to throw out comments, he'll scat, even proto-rap, and is having such a good time he'll try to keep from laughing while he and Sam duel with brass. Only true professional musicians can get away with that sort of thing and make it sound good. Louis & Co. are top-notch pros.

Keely solos on a few cuts to round things out, and basically, you get the feeling of what it must have been like to be kickin' it in Vegas back in the swank era while taking in Louis Prima's act. Maybe tomorrow night, you'll catch Dino at the Sands, and take in Torme on Tuesday. Or, maybe you'll just keep coming back here to see Louis, Keely, Sam, and the Witnesses again and again.

Many of the songs are just plain fun ("Robin Hood/Oh Babe", "Banana Split For My Baby", "Felicia No Capicia", "Greenback Dollar Bill", "There'll Be No Next Time"), and even the old standards take on a wink and a smile when Louis gets ahold of them ("The Music Goes 'Round And Around", "That Old Black Magic", "Just One of Those Things", "Embraceable You")!

Get yourself a martini, sit back and relax, and get ready to be swung back to swanksville. This set is one swingin' good time, whether you're six or sixty!

Louis Prima and Keely Smith with Sam Butera and the Witnesses constitute probably the single greatest influence on today's swing scene. I am not exaggerating. And this double-CD is a great place to start: Over two hours of remastered music, a great production design (neo-retro), and long liner notes. My only problem with the presentation is that the individual musician credits are left out. A must for all swing dancers and jazz musicians! ///// KOBY.

I Love It.......2007-06-23

I just wanted to tell everyone that I love this double disc. Louie Vega is truly House and this is a wonderful example of what the music is all about. New tunes, classics, and artwork are fused together in a package that puts the listener in an art gallery/club setting. I'll come back and talk about this great collection a little more later. I just had to say something about it after my first listen.

Louie Vega (Nuyorican Soul and Elements of Life) of super DJ group "Masters at Work" is the latter. Truly a master of the craft who proves here that he is deserving of that title "Master at Work". A double CD, 27 track non-stop mix of sexy, soulful, rhythmic harmonious grooves, and tropical beats. I just love it when I pick up an album in which a majority of the songs are above par.

The album "Lust, Art & Soul" is kind of a joint venture between Louie Vega and artist/photographer Jonas Larsson ("Off The Record") in which music and graphic art are fused and play off each other in an artistic image. "Lust recognizes that graphic art and music full of soul can feed off each other, satisfying the eye and the mind."

Even though the CD case is lacking a little in the department of photographs (let alone erotic ones), the music is sexy and erotic enough to fulfill Larsson's theme through sound. I think that this work hits its target and accomplishes what was trying to be done and conveyed.

While some tracks are very housey or have a Latin vibe to them, others sound very retro electric 80's like. But I am not complaining at all, on the contrary I am just pointing out the diversity that can be found from song to song. Thumbs up to Louie for compiling a great album of sexy beats!

Mostly mediocre tunes from a true one-hit wonder........2007-07-02

I'm assuming you already know "Louie Louie" (and if you don't, you've got a lot to learn). It's one of rock n roll's greatest performances, an explosion of overwhelming, inarticulate energy that'll probably have humanity dancing well into the 30th century. And... that's about it.

"Louie Louie" aside, the Kingsmen were little more than a standard issue, R&B-influenced frat-rock cover band. They played music for teenagers who wanted to get in a couple of dances before convincing their date to come with them to Lover's Lane and- I'll tell you when you're older. Which is, of course, a noble effort, just not one whose fruits age particularly well. The songs are, for the most part, dull and unoriginal covers of the rock standards of the day- there's a stiff, plodding rendition of "Mustang Sally" that doesn't capture an ounce of the smoldering sexuality found in Wilson Picket's version, while their take on "Death of an Angel" is an unbearably annoying bit of melodrama. The group also murders "Fever," stripping the song of its eerie subtlty and atospheric tension. They reduce the Isley Brothers' breathless "Shout" into a boring mood-killer that sits somewhere between high-speed polka and the worst of high school garage band music. They attack instrumentals with the same ham-fisted unoriginality, cranking out an incredibly tedious version of "Night Train." And then there's the incredibly annoying "Little Sally Tease" and "Killer Joe," a transparent "Louie Louie" rehash that drains the song of its unique magic.

Now, don't get me wrong- there are a few good songs here other than "Louie Louie." "Jolly Green Giant" is a rockin' novelty song, and "The Climb" is a rousing, catchy, pounding number that should have you clibing that dancefloor for a few minutes. "Don't You Just Know It" has a certain, ultra-sloppy, appeal, and "Gimme Some Lovin'" is a great ruccus-raining party anthem. Ditto for "Long Green."

Still, this disc is the demonstration of a mediocre rock band who only managed to record one truly great song. This is an album full of filler, and probably not one that you'll play all that often. Still, if you absolutely insist on having a Kingsmen disc in your collection (or if you want a good exapmle of what a typical 60s teen hop or frat party would've sounded like), this isn't a bad purchase. Although, you might want to buy Rhino's The Best of the Kingsmen instead. It's the more concise disc, and it has the way-cool b-side to "Louie Louie," a stormin' surf instrumental entitled "The Haunted Castle." In either case, happy listening!

blast from the past.......2006-08-27

This has all the big songs and a few I had forgotten about. It is a good selection with few duds. It has a good range from the classic Louie Louie to their more humorous songs like Long Tall Texan. I recommend it for a trip down memory lane.

That's All They Want.......2006-04-01

It says VERY BEST OF, but it's more of a singles collection, really, including some B-sides (The Kingsmen managed to have B-sides that really were among their best stuff). In that case, it loses on both counts: what, no "Haunted Castle"? No "Bent Scepter" (their tribute to Wand Records)? And what about later gems like "Daytime Shadows" and "Childrens's Caretaker"? "Grass Is Green"? Singles or B-sides, all. And some of the very best of, indeed. Ah well. "Louie Louie" is, for better or worse, their signature after all. And it's great. But so was all that other stuff that isn't to be found here. Seek it out.

LOUIE, LOUIE FOREVER !.......2004-12-27

No rock collection is complete without this, the ABSOLUTE BEST Kingsmen hits package ever assembled! The remaining original members of the band personally chose these TWENTY-SIX TRACKS from their five Scepter LPs, and every great tune is here: "Jolly Green Giant", "Annie Fannie", "Long Green", "The Climb", "Little Sally Tease", their definitive honking covers of "Money", "Mustang Sally", "Shout", "Shake A Tail Feather" and so much more, every track proving why these guys were the Mount Olympus of the frat sound! And best of all, as of the discharge of their 1993 lawsuit, the Kingsmen now OWN all their recordings! Way to go, guys! LOUIE, LOUIE FOREVER!

Thomas "Fats" Waller was a brilliant stride pianist and singer, and certainly the only jazz musician who could rival Louis Armstrong as an entertainer, communicating some of the larger-than-life vitality and humor that Armstrong possessed. Waller was also one of the first great songwriters of jazz, his phrasing perfectly mated to the music's rhythmic nuances. This Centennial edition of Satch Plays Fats begins with the nine tracks of Armstrong's 1955 LP devoted to some of Waller's best-known songs, from the drive of "I'm Crazy 'bout My Baby" and the smooth bounce of "Ain't Misbehavin'" to the moving pathos of "Black and Blue." It was one of the highlights of Armstrong's later career, directly comparable to another magnificent session devoted to a single songwriter, Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy. Armstrong is joined by his regular All-Stars, the well-traveled group that matched his clarion trumpet with the vocal smears of trombonist Trummy Young and the woody, liquid clarinet of fellow New Orleans master Barney Bigard, all superbly supported by pianist Billy Kyle, bassist Arvell Shaw, and drummer Barrett Deems. The CD also includes four alternate takes from the 1955 session, and adds another seven tracks of Armstrong's early recordings of Waller tunes. There are versions of "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Black and Blue," recorded in 1929 when Armstrong was featured in the Connie's Hot Chocolates show, and a stunning trumpet solo on "Blue Turning Grey over You." SATCHMO AND FATS.......2007-01-13

ALTHOUGH THIS CD IS A COMPILIATION OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG RECORDINGS PLAYING MUSIC THAT WAS ORIGINALLY WRITTEN AND RECORDED BY FATS WALLER, IT HAS A GREAT SENSE OF CONTINUITY. AS THOUGH ALL THE SONGS WERE RECORDED SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS CD. VELMA MIDDLETON ASSISTS WITH THE VOCALS ON A FEW TRACKS, AND SHE DOES A GREAT JOB COMPLEMENTING SATCHMO. THE RECORDING DATES RANGE FROM THE LATE 20'S TO THE MID 50'S. THIS IS A GREAT CD. I LOVE LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND I LOVE FATS WALLER, SO IT IS NO SURPRISE THAT I LOVE THIS CD TOO!

Many years ago, a very good friend of mine had a cassette player in his car and he would drive around town playing this album on cassette tape over and over again. I eventually heard it when I was riding in his car one day and I begged him for a copy. He gave me a cassette tape of the original album, with just the original nine tracks that the original LP had--and, of course, I played the tape until it was worn through! I feared that I would never get hear this beautiful music again. Imagine my joy when I discovered this CD for sale at Amazon! I couldn't get it here fast enough.

This CD version of the original record album exceeded my expectations by far. There are 11 (yes, ELEVEN) bonus tracks on the CD, of which four were never before released! You get edited alternate versions with people coaching and commenting to Louis after the take. Other tracks date as far back as 1929 so you truly get a perspective of how Louis admired Fats Waller all through his life. (The two worked together only briefly once or twice at the most.) Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent even on my portable music player. Louis Armstrong both sings and plays the music of "Fats" Waller so darn well you'll never tire of playing this one. Louis, his trumpet and the music of "Fats" Waller? Ha! Play it LOUD AND OFTEN because this album's a winner!

For example, the CD starts off beautifully with the classic "Honeysuckle Rose." We also hear "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "I'm Crazy 'Bout My Baby." After spending the entire afternoon listening several times to all the tracks over and over again, it's still tough, if not impossible, to isolate any "favorite" song of mine on this CD. Two of the finalists, however, would have to be "Keepin' Out Of Mischief Now" and "All That Meat And No Potatoes."

Armstrong gets a strong boost from the vocals of Velma Middleton, whose talent is almost entirely uncredited and undervalued in this recording. Her voice complements Louis' beautifully and their half sung/half spoken dialogue in "All That Meat And No Potatoes" is catchy, to say the least. The two singers have a natural and relaxed rapport that makes you feel so comfortable listening to their vocalizing.

The CD has a sticker on the front of the jewel case that you get the liner notes by George Avakian and the story of "Fats" Waller (born Thomas Wright Waller). For some inexplicable reason, however, the liner notes are printed twice! There isn't much to read about Armstrong and Velma Middleton is only pointed out in a picture of her singing one of the songs along with Armstrong. The liner notes could be better--a real mistake, in my opinion.

Overall, this CD is still must have music and a real value with the extra tracks. I recommend this for fans of classic jazz, fine trumpet playing and the early work of Louis Armstrong with his band the All-Stars. Barney Bigard plays the clarinet really, really well as it was his specialty and the liner notes do include great photos. Do yourself a favor--get this CD and find out why Amazon chose this as an "essential recording!" SMILE

Two great collaborators two Geniuses.......2005-01-29

Waller and Armstrong were of the same generation and were collaborators in music in the 1920s. Louis's first big leap to popular stardom beyond the tight group of Jazz musicians and performers came when he introduced "Ain't Mis Behavin'" on the Broadway stage. The audiences often forced him to do three or four encores. Folks who had seen the show before would pay full price just to get in to hear Louis sing this one song.

The recordings in the late 20s by Louis with all the vocals are simply my idea of the best music ever recorded by anyone. Rather than get them selected this way, you might want to get one of the CDs or collections that covers that period of time with everything, rather than just the songs by Waller.
Likewise, while the All Stars were not as good as his original Chicago and New York Groups, particularly these later all-stars (I prefer the albums with the great Jack Teagarden), if you get into the music you will want that all too.

At any rate, there is no one else but Louis who can do these songs justice except the Fat man himself, Mr. Waller!

Years of pleasure.......2004-03-19

I'm somewhat embarrassed to say that I've listened to this album almost every day for several years. I have it in my CD-alarm clock and it wakes me up with a smile every morning. Pops' showmanship and musical wizardry blend with Fats Waller's witty and bouncy tunes to create an exceptionally tasty musical gumbo.

I first heard the album decades ago in college and have always loved as it an incredible performance by a great team of jazz artists. While I love Ella-Satch duets on other records, the lesser known Velma Middleton is really the better vocal match for Pops. The band is tight, but creative and the alternate takes show how different the same song can sound even when played by the same band with just a slight difference in the arrangement. This is possibly the greatest record of all time!

A nice deal.......2003-12-30

I must say that it is nice that they packed as many tracks as they could on this CD. You get a few alternate for these sessions, but you also get a bunch of classic 30's recordings from Satchmo playing Fats. Now, when I compare this one to the 'Plays WC handy' record, I have to take out one star, because although Pops seems in fine form here, there is no match for the fire and fun displayed on the 'Plays WC handy' recording.
