5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Harmony.......2007-05-23

Loved their voices and harmony. I'm glad that I read various reviews and found this group listed as a "must hear". I second it.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best!.......2006-03-26

Words fail me, but this CD by the Fairfield Four never does. I can't remember how I found it, but it's been a strong favorite in my CD collection for years now. Impeccable performances, marvelous voices, beautiful spirit - nourishment for ears, soul and spirit. This morning I started importing CDs into my iTunes collection, and this one is on top of the stack. Thank you, Fairfield Four, for making this recording. It's truly one for the ages.

5 out of 5 stars Born Again? You could be ...........2006-02-26

I first heard of The Fairfield Four in connection with the Coen Brothers film "Oh Brother Where Art Thou?" - so, quite recently then. Being an English Catholic you don't tend to hear an awful lot of American Gospel music in the UK. How many years have I wasted? This album just blew me away with the harmonies, the depth and tone and the sheer love and joy in these songs. I must have listened to it a 100 times now and it never fails to lift my spirits. Give your soul a workout and buy this album!

5 out of 5 stars INNNNCREDIBLE!.......2005-10-29

Good Lord...this is music so incredible that even this agnostic (that is normally disgusted by "Christians" & their hipocracies) can happily put up with all the Born Again hogwash & references to births in Bethlehem & the Ten Commandments, to be delighted by the lush, dramatic, creative, playful harmonies that exude musical genius with every note. This is REAL music....this IS world class American music.

5 out of 5 stars Powerful basso profundo, great a cappella gospel!.......2002-04-20

Isaac "Dickie" Freeman, the bass singer in this group, is the reason I love this CD so much. I got to hear this group live several years ago and was just blown away. Listen to the track "Roll Jordan Roll" and the nice smooth way the Nashville Bluegrass Band starts off. They are a great group in their own right, but when Freeman comes in and starts the rest of the Fairfield Four's contribution, it's a whole different song!
This CD was recorded before the death of some of the original members of the world's "oldest teenage group." Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Sounding Recordings.......2001-10-16

This CD has been around for a while now but it is still truly a good compilation of Science Fiction film music given a new dimension by being recorded digitally. The BATMAN selections composed by Danny Elfman are very powerful combing rousing elements with moody enigmatic passages. Most of the other selections are short or confined to one piece. The selections from TWILIGHT ZONE: THE MOVIE, STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER and POLTERGEIST all composed by Jerry Goldsmith are all performed with passion and demonstrate Goldsmith's great versatility. Bernard Herrmann's "Outer Space" from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL is brief but in effect makes it all the more powerful by its great innovation and lasting impact. The WAR OF THE WORLDS "Prelude" by Leith Stevens was a great surprise.

3 out of 5 stars An interesting collection of obscure s/f-fantasy themes.......2000-10-26

Maestro Kunzel has gathered together a mostly-entertaining mix of music from various s/f movies. As usual with these collections, the CD contains selections that are hard to come by (if not impossible) on a soundtrack or any other recorded source. Not all of the tracks work, however. Music from "Moonwalker" is annoying, and the theme from "War of the Worlds" is just plain weird. Not Kunzel's fault, I know, but those pieces tend to (for me) mar the overall likeability of the album. That said, there are definitely keepers: The theme from "The Black Hole," the soundtrack to which was unavailable on CD anywhere until just recently and which by itself is worth the cost; the sweet chorus of Carol Ann's Theme from "Poltergeist"; the themes from "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "The Beast Master" (I am Dar!) and "The Last Starfighter."

Unfortunately, these movie collections tend to waste too much disk space on sound effects. Often inserted as short introductions to a piece of music, most can be endured quickly and forgotten. But on this CD, a whole track's worth following "The Black Hole" is devoted to the inane cacophony of electronic gibberish, space that would have been much better served by playing, say, the Love Theme from "Superman."

Still, there are more things to like on this album than there are to dislike.

3 out of 5 stars Digital Sound with a so-so collection.......2000-06-25

This is another of the Telarc label's collections put together under the conductor Erich Kunzel and performed by the Cincinnati pops orchestra. Like all Telarc discs, the sound is pure digital and hence can really pack a punch. Moreover, Kunzel often chooses some vey nice gems in his collections -- e.g. the neglected Last Starfighter piece here. However, the problem arises in the fact that many pieces of film score don't play well with a large orchestra -- they loose their focused intensity. The Batman here suffers from such a flaw and is weaker than the original score. The Pops orchestra is best with march-type themes, of which there are not enough on this album to make it outshine the original soundtracks from which it draws.

    Album Description

An album that was created in between spurts of homelessness, with next to no money and no studio time... The Midnight Sun's debut album 'Without A Label' surprisingly has a quality that is as good or better then anything out at the record stores today. With a mix of reggae, techno, rap and rock you get heavy bass, dance oriented beats and edgy lyrics with subject matter that will tear through you.

The "sophomore jinx" is any critically acclaimed artist's greatest fear: you've had your whole life to come up with your first album; do you have it in you to follow it up just a year or two later? However, for Buckshot, 5ft. and DJ Evil Dee, add publicized legal battles with their former label and surmounting anticipation since 1993's classic debut, Enta da Stage, to their list of worries. On War Zone, the trio also known as Black Moon continues with the roles it defined on its first album: Buckshot as the dominant rhyme slayer, 5ft. playing second lyricist, and Evil Dee and Da Beatminerz handling the production duties. "Onslaught" is the album's powerful opener, and it pairs Buckshot's matured but still ferocious lyrical flow with the always-powerful Busta Rhymes on the hook. (Other guests include A Tribe Called Quest's Q-Tip, Heather B, and the Cocoa Brovaz.) In its entirety, War Zone lacks the energy of the group's debut, but tracks such as "War Zone" and "Anialation" (which pairs 5ft. with M.O.P.) prove that the sophomore jinx didn't land on Black Moon. --Celine Wong

5 out of 5 stars Bringing the heavy artillery to the War Zone.......2006-01-03

Black Moon's second release "Warzone" brought changes along with it....Buckshot dropping the "Shorty" from his name, the record label change to Priority Records, the absence of 5FT(was incarcerated during the making of this release)but to their benefit, frontman Buckshot represents the group well throughout the album including several guest appearances from the likes of Busta Rhymes, Heather B and the other members of the Bootcamp Clik to name a few. On time delivery and that grimy Beatminerz production is what carries this album to an elevated status that hip hop fans will admire. As stated in my review for Enta Da Stage, 5FT never received the credit he deserved due to his limited appearances on Black Moon albums but what he bought to the table would forever be etched in my memory and could only hope that if Black Moon were to ever release another album, that 5FT would hopefully get more time to shine. However, on the strength of this album, this is a must have gem.

    4 out of 5 stars Zoned Out.......2005-09-18

Black Moon hiatus of five years return with their sophomore release, War Zone with results almost as good as their debut. Buckshot, Evil Dee & 5 Ft. relied on the production of previous producers, Da Beatminerz to create the foundation for the group. Busta Rhymes helped out on the hook on "The Onslaught". The title track contains a track with space effects and sounds where Buckshot and 5 Ft. take the war to their enemy's front door. "This Is What It Sounds Like" has ancient sounds and feels that's nearly calming and laid back. Asking competitors to war with "Come Get Some" featuring Louieville Sluggah of O.G.C. as Buckshot enters with two shots. On to a more hypnotic track on "Weight of the World" as the Moon maintains on their struggles and life experiences. If lyrics is what you miss, "One-Two" is a good example over a sample that emphases the grimy rhymes of Black Moon. They take it back to the old school with "Two Turntables & A Mic". This is probably the only or almost commercial appeal. "Annihilation" featuring M.O.P & Teflon was just that to add to the war theme of the album. Prepare yourself to entering the War Zone if you're aiming for the stars.

4 out of 5 stars Black Moon brings the War Zone!!.......2000-12-25

I was never a big follower of Black Moon or Smif N Wessun previously but after hearing this CD I may have to go back and see what I might have missed. I actually purchased this based on other reviews and opinions I had heard. I didn't have a chance to hear it in a listening station and definitely not on local radio. I was also impressed with the small number of guest appearances. Throughout the entire CD it keeps a Black Moon feel and does not take on the guests style.

My first impression was that these beats are some of the funkiest, raw tracks I have heard lately. Rather than rely on well polished production or R&B type tracks, Black Moon comes with pure underground hard driving bass, drums and vocals sprinkled with effects throughout. Song after song had me noddin' my head and repeating the selection. While lyrically they are not at the top of any list, their delivery and style more than makes up for any verbal weakness. Songs like Weight Of The World, War Zone, Freestyle, This Is What It Sounds Like (Worldwind) and Come Get Some are close to musical perfection. With the exception of a few songs, Two Turntables & A Mic, most contain little or rare samples. Musically there are few low points on War Zone.

The only disappointment for me was the lyrical content. Constant reinforcement of how hard they are, or references to guns could have been reduced in my opinion. While Buckshot may have a gun-related name, his lyrical ability is obvious and it would be nice to see him try an expand his approach. The vocal play between Buckshot, 5 FT and Evil Dee is a good example of how a crew can work together and still have their own styles.

You won't be hearing this on any commercial radio stations but this is definitely a CD to pick up.
