Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Can Oral (real name!) has made hundreds of electronic records under enough aliases and record labels to foil the FBI. Obviously, then, Passport, a 15-track compilation, features the smallest smattering of the international DJ's oeuvre, serving instead as a faux greatest-hits package of tracks mostly unavailable in the United States. The package includes a deep discography and individual track credits. Not that it matters much. While Julee Cruise (Twin Peaks) is a marquee name, most of the pseudonyms make anonymity redundant. Khan, who made his name in Cologne, Germany, before expanding to Mexico, Brazil, and New York City, specializes in minimalist grooves, gentle gaits that serve as tranquil elements while sudden bursts of madness streak across the placid sky with the impact of a B-1 bomber. This surprise-attack approach is used throughout but is best heard on H.E.A.D.'s "EEFFSS Number 4," in which a funky keyboard loop is merged with the cinematic contours of strings and found noises. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:
Ferry Corsten - Passport to the USA.......2007-06-28
Let me say that Ferry Corsten's newest release "Passport to the United States of America" is Good, but it just didn't really blow me away. I thought his Passport Netherlands was stronger.
Passport USA is solid but never really reaches epic trance status. It gets in the ballpark, but never really made me go "wow" for any extended period of time. Plus you're paying quite a bit of money for only one disc of music. I could do without the DVD if the album cost less.
There are TONS of other trance/ dance/ electronica discs out there. I would skip this and get Armin van Buuren's "A State of Trance 2007" instead.
One of Ferry's Best.......2007-06-25
Certainly a great mix. Although it's unfortunately only 1 disk, Ferry still delivers a well balanced collection of the recently popular electro-sounding progressive trance in addition to the high pumping synth lines that Corsten does best.

Some songs okay, others sound like singer has a cold.......2007-04-23
I thought some of the songs performed on this CD were nice, but I am giving it a 2 because there were several tracks with a vocalist who sounded as if he had a cold, or a closespin on his nose! I found it very annoying to listen to. Anyway, I've heard better renditions of all these songs.
Not too good.......2007-03-22
The Various Artists aren't top artists and the sound isn't very good either.

When you give a listen to samples, and I could hear the songs before I buy, then I can rate it. So was the case with this!
I loved it! The variety of singers, brought me back to my childhood in Italy! I'm buying the CD for my mother's birthday.
TOTALLY AWESOME!.......2000-06-15
Fell in love with this beautiful romantic music. my friend translated some of the songs for me. i was in awe of the beauty of this wonderful collection. Thank you!

Does not really sound like the same music from the Sopranos.......2007-06-29
Basically the music does not sound the same as the music from the Sopranos series, don't know if it was a different singer, certainly not worth the money
NOT the HBO version.......2006-06-06
This sucks bad. It is NOT the version used on the Sopranos. There are a lot more lyrics and the performers don't sound anything like the HBO version by A3. Don't waste your money.

POWERFUL!!!!!!.......2007-06-22
You will be amazed. Only after hearing his speaches I realized he was a powerful man. A man like that does not have a chance to live a long life in this world. Malcolm X speaks the truth and doesn't care if you like what he says or not. I love you Malcolm. I wish I was only alive to see you. May God rest your soul. Amen
This is powerful!.......2006-06-04
For those of us who missed seeing Malcolm in person, this will give you a sense in why he is a sage of the hightest order. I am humbled at his way in which he makes us think. Very powerful.
Inflammatory!!!.......2006-03-29
Malcolm X's words are as true today as they were then. Unfortunately, not as much has changed as what we may think. He was so inflammatory and provocative; I can't imagine how "either side" took his heated messages when he first delivered them. Absolutely mindblowing. I wish I was there to witness his charismatic delivery and the strength of his testimony.

passport.......2005-12-29
It is hard to fault this cd,what with Nana's beautiful voice singing at her best,as usual, but I don't know the Greek language, and several songs on here are all in a foreign language, which is fine if you understand the language. This is the only reason I downrate it to 4 stars from 5.
Excellent introduction to the music of Nana.......2003-09-20
This CD is a re-issue of a compilation that first appeared on vinyl in the mid seventies. Nana has recorded many fine songs since then but this collection still provides a great start to a collection of Nana's music.
The set opens with White rose of Athens. At the time this was her signature song and may still be so though I can't be sure of that. It is certainly appropriate for Nana, the most successful popular recording artist Greece has ever produced.
Several covers of famous songs are included, but that's fine because they always sound special when Nana sings them. They include Seasons in the sun, Bridge over troubled waters, Day is done, Try to remember, And I love you so and Amazing grace. Note that I have a dream is not the Abba song of that title (though Nana has also recorded that, just to confuse everybody) and My friend the sea is not the song that provided Petula Clark with a huge British hit in the early sixties. Nana sings Never on a Sunday in French, the language in which it was originally written. Other great songs here include The loving song, Turn on the sun and The last rose of summer.
While this can no longer be regarded as the definitive Nana collection, it was just that in the seventies and still makes for great listening.
Nana's voice is so soothing!.......2003-08-17
I first "discovered" Nana while listening to XM Satellite Radio, tuned to the "Easy Listening" channel. They play Nana's work several times a day and I found that whenever she was singing, I would stop what I was doing to check the display screen to see who it was. This album contains many of her standards including Cu-cu-ru-cu (English version), which is just beautiful!! If you like easy listening, female voice music, then this is a CD to purchase.
Simply gorgeous album.......2000-06-24
I love this album, I would recommend it, every Nana Mouskouri fan will enjoy this album. I would especially recommend this album to those who would lay back and let the music take them away, the sweet, simple songs with a touch of the seventies sounds will soothe your mind and soul. ps-centaur75@mailcity.com
Excellent collection of her early songs........1999-08-29
Very nice collection of her 60-70's songs compiled on 1 CD.The studio version of Odod oniron & the live version of Millisse mou.Day is done & Seasons in the sun are also enjoyable. But I'd recommend to get her original Lps.

Great Music... Poor Mastering!.......2006-03-07
I recently started collection Tommy Garrett records from used record stores. I bought a pristine copy of Maria Elena on vinyl for just $1. I was amazed at the beauty of this record and the amazing sound Eddie Bracket, the engineer, got on the guitars and percussion. The sound of the vinyl really amazed me! Besides a few cracks and pops here and there, this record sounded better than most cds. I transferred the LP to cd with amazing results. Since then I have collected about 8 Tommy Garrett records... I was excited to buy this cd (Best of 50 Guitars) at a discounted price ($6.98), but when I received it, I was disappointed to find no liner notes and even worse, disappointed by the weak sound quality of the songs themselves. This surely wasn't mastered properly and sounds much thinner than the vinyl recordings I have. Maybe the source recordings were taken from an old tape. I don't know, but in the future I'll just make vinyl transfers myself.

Customer Reviews:
Brings Back Memories.......2007-01-12
I listened to this album all through my university years, 20 years ago, and so finding it now has brought back a lot of good memories. I'm glad that I was able to get an import version as I have not seen it anywhere for a long time. I love this type of progressive rock music in the vein of Genesis and Yes. Mike Rutherford may be the most unassuming member of Genesis and this album seems to be in keeping with his personality since he doesn't seem to be front and center, although he lays down some nice guitar solos and wrote the material. But the entire ensemble is allowed to shine on this album. It sounds a bit like Genesis but also offers something different.
I especially like the "Smallcreep's Day" suite, which is based on a story by Peter Currell Brown. It used to be one side of the album and it's a sort of concept song with one piece flowing into the other. I think it captures the alienation of working at a dead end job and the thrill of trying to escape from it.
Overall, I like the musicianship on the album, particularly Simon Phillips' drumming, which can be a bit heavy-handed at times, but I think it works. He does some very interesting things on "Out Into the Daylight" and "Moonshine". Mike Rutherford has some nice solos on "Working In Line" and "Time and Time Again" and uses the acoustic guitar to good effect. Listening to this album again after many years I have much more appreciation for Noel McCalla's vocals. Some of the songs verge on being too "poppy" as my university roommate would say, so it depends whether you like that or not.
The one drawback with this package is that there are no liner notes. I have the original vinyl album and there were extensive notes, lyrics and some cool artwork. This package doesn't even list the musicians, which is the first thing I look for when buying a solo album from someone who plays in a group like Genesis. So, unfortunately, you have to go to the Internet to get any information on the project.
The parts do not equal the whole.......2006-07-20
I love Genesis. This is a decent enough solo project. I'm not thrilled by the entire set list, but there are some nice instrumental passages. However I do feel that overall the depth of the sound is not full enough. Even when there are guitars, keyboards, bass and drums trying to impart something dramatic it just lacks impact. Even the singer has a very middle-of-the road vocals that seem to plague a lot of Genesis solo efforts, (obviously not including Phil and Peter's solo work.) Not a must have, but something for the curious.
Best work of Mike as soloist, best work of prog .......2006-06-16
I had this record at the end of the 70s or early 80s (not sure now).. I never got tired of listening to it.. and always saying how come something so good never came before?? or after for that matter.
Sleeve of the record had all the lyrics plus the inspiration of the Album's main theme (Side B dedicated), so in order to understand it and be faithful to the vinyl version start at track 8. This wuld have been side A of the record and contains excellent songs.
Side B has to be understood as a whole story:
Tired of always doing his 25 years routine at work, Smallcreep takes and adventure at night to visit the factory and find out what is it it made... a true exploration at alienism.. so At the End of the Day he retuns home a changed man and to his loving wife..
The album said it was inspired in a book I searched google and found a review that said
"Side one of the album was inspired by the book 'Small Creep's Day' by Peter Currell Brown, the second side contains a batch of individual songs with no overall concept"
Its a shame that the book is not available at Amazon US
Nothing else quite like it........2006-03-18
SMALLCREEP'S DAY is kind of an odd "solo album" because the main artist is showcased as a songwriter but not so much as a performer. Performance-wise, there is more focus on singer Noel McCalla and keyboardist Anthony Phillips than on Rutherford. (Mr. Mike particularly does little actual playing on some sections of the "Smallcreep's Day" suite.)
This is an album that doesn't quite sound like anything else, particulary Rutherford's later efforts. I wouldn't have minded hearing this combination of performers do more. (They also did a rare B-side, "Compression", whose failure to appear on this CD as a bonus track is a CRIME.)
Compositionally, Rutherford goes for beauty and complexity over memorability. One thing that has always stood out to me is the album's sweet, uncynical personality -- quite a contrast to, say, the melancholy atmosphere of Tony Banks' comparable A CURIOUS FEELING or to most Gabriel-era Genesis. Comparisons between the "Smallcreep's Day" suite and Genesis' earlier "Supper's Ready" are both obvious and pointless.
My favorite track is "Overnight Job". Some of the lyrics are a bit limp, and "Moonshine" wants to be a much tougher song than it is, but those are minor complaints.
GREAT SOLO GENESIS CD.......2005-09-06
This is arguably the best Genesis solo album. Mike does a great long composition in the spirit of Supper's Ready where he displays his fabulous guitar work (guitar and bass). Great melodic music that Danjob continues to ignore. You should not ignore this great work.

Not the orignal recordings.......2007-04-10
Great vocals, but they could have at least changed the speed of the metronome. The tempo of every song sounds the same and gets monotonous after a while.
If you're looking for the original recordings you shouldn't buy this CD.
Not the original recordings/artists.......2007-04-07
If this is just one of the original group members, I would be surprised.
These are completely different arrangements, ochestration etc. I believe these selections were recorded simultaneously rather than at different times. They tried to capture the original feel, however, have come up quite short. Get the original recordings, the soul of those great songs are not here!

Held Up At The Border.......2005-10-05
Passport's IGUACU was my second exposure to the group after first hearing Infinity Machine, which I highly enjoyed. Expecting more of the same, I listened to the Promotional Release from Atco Records and heard a totally different sound than what I had come to expect from the group. Not that it is all that bad... it's just a different flare and perhaps as I age, the music sounds even better than when I first heard the vinyl album nearly 30 years ago as a DJ. Personally, I would have arranged the song order differently so that Side One became Side Two. As another reviewer stated elsewhere, how an artist opens an album can make the difference between acceptance and rejection. Heavy Weight and Guna Guna, while classic Passport fare, does sound rather dated, and that may be a great thing if you want to capture the 70's rock/jazz/funk fusion sound. In playing the CD, perhaps programming your player to play tracks 5, 6, 7, 8, 1, 2, 3 and 4 in that order may make more sense as this would be the equivalent of playing side two then side one of the vinyl disc. Even the photo and title of the album are shown up-side-down, so maybe that was the hidden message here in how to best listen to the album, depending on whether or not you wanted to start off slowly with the first tract or jump into the Latin rhythms of what was the first track of side two. The closing song of side one, Sambukada, while heavily colored with local musicians and native percussion and wind instruments, does not stop the clear sax shots and a catchy melody line by sax player Klaus Doldinger from coming through loud and clear. I find myself humming the staccato melody line long after the song has ended. All in all, it's not Passport at their best, but considering that these are European artists, recording in Rio and playing to American ears, the end result could have certainly been much worse. I'd include IGUACU as an essential four star recording even though some of their best sounds stayed behind at the border, this trip.
May I see your Passport, please?.......2004-01-12
A strange departure for Passport with latin tempos, whistles, etc. Not a five star album, but the songs are an interesting enough to hold you attention. The last two songs "Heavy Weight" and "Guana Guana" are classic Passport. The guitar work on "Guana Guana" is exceptional and a song you will play over and over.
An Important Phase...Perhapes.......2003-09-21
Generally speaking Passport of this era could be counted on to NEVER deliver a less then competant album but "Iguacu" almost changed that.Although recorded in Rio with some of the best players in the area and despite "Bahia De Sol","Bird Of Paradise" and the tital track all have moments "Iguacu" isn't one
of Passports most throughly satisfying albums and doesn't contain the sting and zest of what came before or after. There is
too much of an emphasis on accessability and the fusion of funk and latin that sometimes they seem to be forgetting precisely what they're fusing at all.Sometimes the latin percussionists
featured here get far too overindulgent and trample all over
Passport's original flavor and chemistry with excessive playing
and the ultimate result is musically confusing.Only the final two tracks-the bassy, heavy funk of "Heavy Weight" and "Guna Guna" are a reminder of this bands particular elan and allow the bands REAL players to shine.Short story:Passport really don't need alot of collaborators-they're whole overall sound is perfected enough where they can hold their own ON their own and the end result of anything else detracts from their unqiue sound.Worth hearing and well made but not a good first purchase.Familiarize yourself with the classics first.
Excellent fusion.......2003-08-30
I have been a Passport fan since the "Looking Thru" album and cannot except that someone would only give this album 3 stars. If You are a fan of jazz fusion You will not be dissapointed by purchasing this cd. If You do not own any Passport this and "Infinity Machine", "Earth Born", "Cross-collateral", and which is out of print ... "Blue Tattoo" are excellent.
Love The Cover, Not So Sure About The Music.......2002-09-08
It's apparent to me that Klaus Doldinger felt pressured to produce something more "commercial" or "radio friendly" than his previous albums. Apparently he succeeded, because the record got onto the Billboard charts. Unfortunately, the music of Passport went downhill in the process, and I have a feeling a lot of folks who bought "Iguacu" on the strength of "Infinity Machine" and "Cross-Collateral" ended up disappointed.
This isn't a terrible record, just not a very inspired one. It has simple, clunky song structures, and solos that sound like they were phoned in. There are disco influences, weak attempts at Latin jazz/fusion, even a bit of reggae, but it's hard to see what Doldinger was after, except to sound like something that American radio program directors might find sufficiently inoffensive. "Sky Blue" ("Ataraxia"), on the other hand, achieves a a pretty good balance between radio friendliness and creativity. Ironically, I thought this was the follow-up to "Infinity Machine," and daringly slipped in some of its tracks during my late-night shift at the MOR radio station where I worked in 1978. "Iguacu" may have made the charts, but I wasn't even aware of it until I began rebuilding my 1970s fusion collection. I suppose I would have played something from it, too, though.
If you are a Passport fan and you can get this at a discounted price, I say go for it. At the very least, you can enjoy the good, solid drumming of Curt Cress, along with some funky 1970s guitar pedal and synthesizer tones. As for the band's artistic leader...look elsewhere for his best work.
