For his debut album on Talkin' Loud/Polygram, Bristol, England's Roni Size keeps with the label's tradition of releasing grandiose, song-oriented dance albums. Size teams up with DJs Krust, Die, and Suv; MC Dynamite; and vocalist Onalee to weld the rough-and-ready sounds of British drum & bass to the soul vibes of their hometown. On New Forms, the jazz concepts laid out on his earlier singles are expanded into song form, with live instrumentation and full vocals. The album never fails to be interesting; there's serious musical credibility underlying every track, but New Forms, with its straightforward pop sensibilities, is clearly aimed at the listener. Fans of the Bristol sound will appreciate the "Watching Windows" and "Share the Fall" singles, whose subtle melancholy blends seamlessly with Size's trademark drum assaults. Despite its length (23 tracks spanning 140 minutes), New Forms remains perfectly balanced and eminently listenable. --Matthew Corwine

I own several CDs in this series and this one, unfortunately is the one that comes off the shelf the least. Even since loading the contents up MP3 style into my computer and iPod only a few get played. Only a select few truly sound like the alternative radio I grew up with in the 80s.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars All hail... Lord Stiv.......2007-05-07

The Lords of the New Church. A bunch of guys from different style bands that produced a different style of music for the 80's. They were at times punk, goth, glam... a little of all those things , but always produced interesting music. Great live band, provided Stiv was not too wasted. Never heard a band that was similar since. The first two albums are the best, Killer lords is a good compilation, but some good songs from both those first 2 albums are not on this one. Still a good cd if you dont want to shell out a lot of dough to get the first two albums on cd.

4 out of 5 stars Sell outs never sounded so good!.......2004-12-24

Of course Stiv--RIP--Bators sold out after disbanding the infamous Dead Boys (whose debut LP is an unadulterated punk classic), but compared to such shallow KISS acolyte contemporaries as Motley Crue, or even (don't laugh) that awful Canadian band Platinum Blonde, this stuff was and is much, much better.

Beyond that, it still holds up, can you believe it?

All the hits are really here; "Dance With Me", "Open Your Eyes" (which was at least as good as Duran Duran's best stuff--why wasn't it a number 1?), "Russian Roulette", and their amazing cover of "Like A Version" (which still gets people moving when I play it today). I think it's even better and more comprehensive than the Lords Anthology.

Pick it up and admit you lived through the 80s and survived. Thankfully, so did this.

5 out of 5 stars Gimme some russian roulette..........2004-07-06

The Lords of the New Church were a neglected 80's goth/punk band. This CD is a greatest hits of sorts which includes Dance With Me (which had minor play on MTV in the early 80's), Method To My Madness, and Russian Roulette (my favorite song by them). They even covered Madonna's "Like A Virgin" which is included on this cd. If you're into 80's goth such as Bauhaus, check out the Lords today!

4 out of 5 stars Really Good, But Some Odd Selections.......2004-03-20

This was my first experience into the Lords music. Being a huge Stiv/Dead Boys fan, after the initial shock at the format/content changes, the songs became mainstays in my CD lineup. However, as I grew as a fan, I began to realize how a number of these selections, "Opening Nightmares," "Dreams and Desires," "A Gun Called Justice," and "Hey Tonight" are all good songs, there are more "Lordsy" songs that should've been included. "Pretty Baby Scream," "Partners In Crime," and the biggest omission, "Livin' on Livin'," are all selections that are much better representations of who the Lords were: A great garage band, exploring new territories all the time. The other included tracks that I felt should've been omitted seemed more like studio experiments and corporate pushes ("Like a Virgin, anyone?) All in all, a pretty good anthology and great introduction into the Lords of the New Church and who they were. "Killer Lords" is a great first CD, but their self-titled debut is where the listener starts to see what kind of band they were. Turner and James inherently playing surf rock, Tregunna on bass with some of the tastiest and simplest riffs, and of course, Stiv Bators, one of the greatest frontmen ever.

5 out of 5 stars All Killer, No Filler.......2003-12-26

The Lords Greatest Hits. Like any other LORDS album, a meaningful masterpiece and certainly significant theosophically, against the backdrop of most 80's vibrant/vapid offerings.

3 out of 5 stars Missing a vital track..........2003-01-04

This anthology of The Lords Of The New Church is drastically missing one of their greatest and most successful songs - "Open Your Eyes." I recommend instead that you attempt to track down the self-titled debut, as it has the band's best and most popular songs on it. The Lords Of The New Church are a fantastic and more light hearted example of the great heyday of early Goth and Post Punk music, and they will make a very important addition to your collection. This Anthology is a good start if the debut CD is that difficult to find.

5 out of 5 stars Lords of the New church-Anthology.......2001-06-07

Being an anthology, this is nothing true Lords fans haven't already heard before, however being a remastered recording, it does have better mixes and sound quality. Also, it is better than the mid-80s "Killer Lords" compilation as it has a better song selection. These songs represent the Lords career as a whole and aside from the one Lords "mistake" (redoing Madonnas "Like a Virgin"...what were they thinking?) it is a fantastic view of "Goth" music in it's early days and is highly recommended to anyone out there who wants a peek into some great 80s tunes by a highly underrated band. Being a French import, all the liner notes are in French but that is to be expected with any import. Rest in Peace Stiv...you certainly earned it.

5 out of 5 stars the LORDS REMASTERED.......2000-09-05

This Anthology is an awesome way to turn the young on to the LORDS. The majority of the collection featured here is from the Lords First album, which definitely utilizes the remaster! While it sounds incredible on the home stereo , it may be too sonic for the car unit. LORDS to me represent everything Rock n Roll could be. That's saying alot when you consider it came from the early 80's. At that time there was no such title as Goth, but the LORDS indeed created the DarkWave for which the new era surfed in. case in point? www.members.home.net/aaron3/lustkillers

5 out of 5 stars ADJECTIVAL RECTIFICATION: PUNK OR GOTH?.......2000-05-26

I think most people in their 30's would agree there was no Goth in the early 80's when The Lords of The New Church were in their heyday. Goth is a 90's phenomenon. In the 80's there was Punk. Although some people might argue that punk was a 70's thing. They might also argue that punk, as such, is a British phenomenon...and that here in the states, we only saw a watered-down version of it.

I prefer to think that what we (American teens of the early 80's) had, was NEW WAVE PUNK. Remember there were a number of things going on at the same time. There was Adam Ant, which some consider Glam Punk. There was Nina Hagen, which some consider Hip Punk. There was Black Flag / Henry Rollins, DEVO, and X, which some consider the true sound of Punk Rock in America. Plus a few others: Lene Lovich, Lori Anderson, VooDoo Church, Slow Children, Siouxie Sioux and the Banshees, The Clash, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera!

So, with the semantics out of the way...and regardless of what you wish to call The Lords of The New Church, we can talk about their music and personae. Great guitar sounds! Great lyrics that told of everything that's wrong with the government, national defense, society, religion, economy and the world in general! Tough Punk sound with just enough rhythm to make it danceable! The melancholy voice of Stev Bator! Black leather, chains & spandex fetishes! Black Kohl eyeliner (in the great tradition of Alice Cooper, Mick Jagger and Kevin Ayers)! Shoulder length hair to express rebellion, but not too long as to be confused with heavy metal types.

This anthology is a good sampling of The Lords' work. It contains songs from 3 or 4 separate albums. I bought this anthology to have something for those nostalgic moments. When, against all better judgement, I wish I could go back to those PUNK-OUT days.

Incidentally, does anyone remember Stev Bator in that John Waters movie: POLYESTER? If also featured DIVINE, America's favorite "Drag Queen At Large"

5 out of 5 stars If I could only have 10 albums on a desert island..........2003-05-15

It's an album I have never stopped listening to since I first bought it. It is darkly poetic, it is scathing, it is angry, it is imaginative. This is an example of the brilliance that can erupt when a band is all on the same page. There is not a throw away track on the cd. No, these are not ALL brilliant songs, but you will not find yourself routinely hitting the fast forward button on your remote. The standouts on here I contend are not just standouts on the disc, but standouts in alternative/punk/goth...whatever it is you want to lable this band that did not want to be labled. "OPEN YOUR EYES"...Jesus...this song is 20 years old and it is just as meaningful today as it was when Reagan was in office. It will depress you at just how little things change. The word plays show that Bators (or Bator depending on how the stars were alligned) was not some punk dope, but a very clever musician. "HOLY WAR"...the Catholic Boy gives it to the Pope but good.
THe musicianship is outstanding. Great guitar riffs, basslines, throbbing drumb beats. The atmosphere is often dark and clammy. The Lords pull off one of the only song covers in music that surpasses an original...their version of QUESTION OF TEMPERATURE kicks Balloon Farm's ...!
Yes friends, this is one of the few albums out there worth PAYING for.

5 out of 5 stars From the front lines..........2003-01-24

I actually saw the Lords more than 20 times live in LA from Magic Mountain to the Music Machine and got the rare opportunity to visit Stiv in the recording studio while doing "Have Love will Travel". Believe me that he would be rolling over in his French grave being labelled "Goth", whatever that may mean to some. The Lords were a great "Rock'n'Roll" band born out of the roots of the punk rock scene here in LA. They were fun, irreverent and fantastic to watch live. Their first album was born of Stiv's desire to move on to a band that could capture the imagination like the Dead Boys had previously. His tongue was firmly planted in his cheek and his hand in his pants.

5 out of 5 stars The Truth is the Sword of us all.........2000-09-05

The LORDS were the first punks to grow up, all the while keeping their humor and seriousness in tact. They weren't afraid to go deep and they definitely weren't afaid to get cheeky. They could be sophisticated and/or campy without batting an eye. The first release changed the rules of rock n roll by offering listeners more of everything in all directions. Thank the LORDS they weren't afraid to take a chance. They had a DeathSurf Beat, and a poetic prowse. The bass drove it home, and the guitars slashed at every turn. GloomMoody, Rock n Roll !! Viva La Lords.

5 out of 5 stars a change of pace........2000-08-12

The sound on this cd is really good for being an early '80's cd. With all the famous hardcore punk bands with low quality production, this band stands out strong. Whether you listnen to goth, punk, metal or any other label, this is the band you want to listen to next if your hungry for something new. THE LORDS OF THE NEW CHURCH cd is a great getaway from whatever you're listening to now! FIND IT, CRANK IT AND ENJOY!

3 out of 5 stars a nicely underrated goth album -- 3 or 4 stars........2000-01-06

for those who claim this is not a goth album, i beg to differ. goth is not all ethereal crooning, it is also the intent behind the music. lords of the new church is somewhat rough and early 80s "rock" like. it's the sort of music that makes you wonder exactly what it is you're listening to, since it doesn't seem to fall in any one particular gender. i imagine that quite a few people will dislike this album. however, it is definitely worth buying. it's direct, clear-cut, and forceful. russian roulette, in particular, stands out as a wonderful track, slightly calmer & cleaner than the rest, which are more frenzied.

5 out of 5 stars MADNESS that this band didn't get HUGE.......2004-03-18

The Lords of the New Church should have been huge. The 80's were a bad place to be a rock band (unless you were IRS labelmates The Police or U2) as demonstrated by the lack of success this album did back in 1984. The original production by Chris Tsangarides was tinny and actually gave the listener a massive headache. This release has the bass lifted in the mix and what do we get? A beautiful album meant to be played real LOUD. The Lords mixed punk, pop, and metal perfectly and somehow didn't get to the top of the chart thanks to fans of Kajagoogoo and Haircut 100 and whoever else was getting hits at the time.

GOD BLESS STIV, BRIAN, DAVE, AND NICKY!
You guys were great and this album is testament.

3 out of 5 stars Punks Tryin to play Metal.......2004-01-30

This is the worst of the 3 efforts by a great band of punk icons.
From what I know even the Lords weren't very pleased.
They were hoping to change with the times and make some money in the heavy metal market instead of doing what they do best. The production is really the worst part of it all.
I think this is also the remastered version of Method to Our Madness which is even worse. As for the other reviewer, StevenMarque sounds nothing like the Lords and more like Cookie Monster. Shame on you! there are 2 new singers in the Lords and Steven is not one of them....(singer)

5 out of 5 stars Start the Madness.......2003-12-26

The Lords at their zenith. The last IRS record by the band, it moves more into heavy metal figures sonically and psuedo satanist imagery lyrically. This one is most like the new 2003 incarnation of the band fronted by StevenMarque; and you can really see Stiv's influence on him on tracks like KISS OF DEATH, DO WHAT THOU WILT and SEDUCER. Like any other LORDS album, a meaningful masterpiece and certainly significant theosophically, against the backdrop of most 80's vibrant/vapid offerings.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I got the feeling Hey!.......2004-12-25

If anyone reading this is a fan of the Dead Boys, the Damned, or even Sham 69 do yourself a favor and pick this one up. The drums sound fantastic, Bators voice still spits a lot of venom, it has goth textures but its not goth, and the album does what a lot of other side projects forget to do: it rocks. Almost every track works the two standouts being the openers "New Church" and "Russian Roulette". The bonus tracks offer a nice contrast and you can see why they were left off, still good songs though. Pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars Video games train the kids for war..........2004-11-18

I don't know why they switched the cover--the old, sparse, dagger on black background was great--but this is a nearly perfect album of rock. It's punk, it's a bit gothic, it's got hooks, it's got a lot of attitude, and it sounds great over 20 years later. It absolutely holds up today.

The Lords have resurfaced of late, minus the late Stiv, of course, but they've remastered and re-released their albums and even put out some double disc goodies of live material and other gems.

Not a bad song on here, though I'd say the bookend tracks of Lords of the New Church and Holy War (how appropriate these days) really frame it well. Eat Your Heart Out has the right snarling, biting feel to it, especially that chorus. Open Your Eyes is about as relevant as ever, and there are slower but no less great tunes in Russian Roulette and Livin' on Livin'.

The production is good--this was basically a punk supergroup, but they are way more than 'punk'. There's a darker feel, and a more cerebral tone than a lot of other loud, snotty punk bands (like previous incarnations of some of the members).

This new version also has a nice bonus track, Young Don't Cry.

Highly recommended album for rock fans, for anyone who wants a bit more than what is called punk (or goth) these days. Excellent group.

5 out of 5 stars The 1st Punk Rock Supergroup.......2004-01-22

This cd is incredible, short but incredible. I was inspired in high school to do a slide show for Apocalypso and Holy War. Great imagery. I like the original cover, the dagger on a black background. I don't care for the new cover. Hey, is this remastered or what? I already own the IRS version. I'll pay $15 if the reissue is remastered. It would help if the packaging stated "Digitally Remastered". If you don't own the Lords (Stiv era) start here. Not a bad song on it. Excellent cover of Russian Roulette. Livin' On Livin', Open Your Eyes (the single), Eat Your Heart Out, I could go on, ahh what the heck, Question of Temperature (Cover), Li'l Boys Play With Dolls (A tribute to the New York Dolls), Portobello, and New Church all rock.

Album Description

Liner Notes by Richard Meltzer (1981) and Andy Shernoff (1998). All songs recorded live to a two track Dokorder on February 11, 1981 at a night club performance, except bonus tracks, which are from a board tape from a live concert at the Ritz in early '80's. Bonus tracks mastered by Andy Shernoff at Sterling Sound 1998.

On February 11, 1981, John Hanti and I (we were booking the Club 80's on the Upper East Side) traveled with a two track Dokorder to a live Dictators reunion to record the band. Neither of us really knew what we were doing - but the results were fabulous, the band cooked and ROIR cassette A102, The Dictators Live - Fuck 'Em If They Can't Take a Joke was born - and quickly released. It was a big success and helped launch the young ROIR cassette label in the small (then) indie community and, according to Cashbox Magazine (June 1990), helped "elevate the Dictators to mythical status."

So, now we have the original cassette remastered for CD, plus three live bonus tracks selected and mastered by Andy Shernoff from an early '80's performance at the Ritz in NYC.

Yes. Good. Finally this is available with bonus tracks and is on CD and is as good as it ever was. You should buy this. It is good rock and roll, it is live in NY, it is loud and abrasive and melodic and like a sing-a-long at the end of the world. Notable tracks such as "Loyola" and "Search and Destroy" and "Master Race Rock" and "Baby Let's Twist" are completely satisfying on every ostensible level....the stage patter from Handsome Dick Manitoba fulfills and exceeds expectations...for the price, you'd be hard pressed to find an album that better represents a band's energy and sound on stage and makes you just want to get up and dance on a car hood all night long....

4 out of 5 stars Arrogance and hard rock fury.......1998-12-07

A reissue of ROIR's cassette release "Fuck 'Em If They Can't Take a Joke," "The Dictators Live: New York New York," is a welcome addition to your collection if you could never stand the fragile tape-only format. ROIR did reissue it on CD a number of years ago but that edition went quickly out of print. The new version contains three extra tunes from a Dics show at the Ritz in NYC in the early Eighties. I was there and I can tell ya it was a bitchin' performance. The crowd was nuts, desparate for faster and louder guitars and that arrogant Dictators magic. Bags of White Castle burgers were thrown into the crowd. Civilians were booted from the stage. Blood was spilt. Feminists uttered menacing epithets under their breaths. In "Master Race Rock," guitarist Ross the Boss' plexi Marshall peels out right over the face of the listener for three and a half minutes of hard rock fury. In 1998, it whales the tar out of anything current in the heavy metal genre. Killer versions of Mott the Hoople's "The Moon Upstairs" and "The Minnesota Strip" from the "Bloodbrothers" album are also not to be missed. -- Dick Destiny

Being a HUGE Stiv/Dead Boys/Lords/Wanderers/Damned/Sham 69 fan, it only makes sense that this Disc be an important addition to my collection.

I ALMOST gave this collection a 4 instead of a 5 ONLY for the fact that alot of the Unreleased Tracks are nothing "new".

For instance, "My Alibi" is "S.F.& T." from "Method..." with different lyrics.

Others of the "Unreleased" are demo versions of released songs for instance, "New Victorians" is the demo for "Real Bad Time" and "Loyal to the Queen" is the demo for "Bang Bang Baby Maybe".

"Never Be Another One" and "Wine, Women, and Song" are actually tunes we've never heard before, and this release shows why. Some songs are not released for a reason. They're just not all that good.

"Route 66" sounds like an audience bootleg recording from a live gig. Let's face it, it's "Route 66". Done by the Lords. We've already heard Stiv doing this song on the re-issue of "Liver Than You'll Ever Be" earlier this year...or was that on "Night of the Living Dead Boys" re-issue? Hard to keep track.

If you are a Lords fan, or completist and NEED to have all of the available tracks (like me) than by all means GET THIS CD. The bonus CD of the live concert at My Fathers Place on Long Island is great. I had this bootleg on a CD for about 10 years, and it's a great sounding show (recorded for WLIR FM in 1982....MUCH MUCH better than "Live At Spit" released in 1988) even if it is doctored up with some extra crowd noise (my original CD doesn't have nearly as much cheering).

Frankly, for most Lords fans, the inclusion of "Mr. MX-7" (from the movie "Tapeheads") is worth the cost of the CD alone. Lords fans have been searching for a complete version of this song ever since the movie soundtrack came out WITHOUT the Lords track included (but, WHY?).

I would hope to see one more "Lords Prayer" set come out with some more unreleased stuff on it, but I get the feeling that if this is what we got now, there may not BE anything left of really great quality.

Can it be that the Lords actually did release EVERYTHING they recorded (of quality) when they were together???? This set proves that it's a possibilty!

5 out of 5 stars The best in the series!.......2007-05-23

Recorded shortly before Mr. Scott took up his new (and equally prestigious) post at St Thomas Church, Fifth Ave., NYC, this disc is, in my opinion, the best in the whole English Anthem series. The program is remarkably varied, and includes a stunning rendition of Sheppard's "Libera Nos I". It is so stunning that I can't help wishing that more Renaissance music had been included in this series. The choir of St Paul's sings it so well! Also recorded on this disc is a brand new commission from Rutter, "A Crown of Glory", which is brilliantly spectacular. Mr. Scott is also featured as a composer here, and his truly beautiful "Behold, O God our Defender", which is very "Howells-esque". The Bairstow anthem, "Lord, I call upon thee", is highly atmospheric. HIGHLY atmospheric. At the words "as the incense in Thy sight", one almost smells the incense!

The singing on this CD is what makes it so uniquely magnificent. I have never heard the choir of St Paul's sound in such good voice. Their expression, tone, and accuracy has never been better. They have once again reaffirmed that they indeed are the "King of Cathedral Choirs".

This recording virtually defines the term "must-have"!
