Afrika Bambaataa, the Godfather of Hip-hop, has worked with artists as soulful as James Brown, as pop friendly as Boy George, and as funky as Bootsy Collins. The Cosmic Force co-creator can look back on his illustrious career and say that he and his crew are responsible for influencing the fate of several sub-genres of music, including Miami and Atlanta bass, Latin freestyle, hip-hop, house, and early techno. 1982's "Planet Rock," featured on the Don't Stop Planet Rock EP, is the ultimate party-rockin' record. The lyrics tell groove junkies about a utopia where socializing and getting down are the only requirements for residency. The words may go in one ear and out the other, but the beat knocks holes in the back of heads and it cannot be ignored. DJ Magic Mike's "Bass in the Planet Mix" funkily incorporates just what the title suggests, while the classic mix, more electronic in feel, embodies an overwhelming digital atmosphere. --Asondra R. Hunter

3 out of 5 stars Didn't have what I was looking for..........2001-10-18

I have been looking for a year for the electronic-tinged, vocoder-filled instrumental version of "Planet Rock" that used to be played everyday on the radio and have been unsuccessful. I thought I had finally found it when I came across this EP, however it was not there. I gave the recording three stars because I already have all these versions. My rating may not be fair because I was looking for a particular version that is unfortunately not included in this collection, however the song remains danceable and groundbreaking for its time on all the included versions. If you have only one or two versions of this mega-hit, get this EP.

5 out of 5 stars "Planet Rock" gets the bangin' re-mix treatment!.......2001-09-12

Man, I don't see how the previous reviewers could diss this CD by giving it such low ratings. The Magic Mike re-mix is my favorite version because of the James Brown breakbeats he looped on top of the main rhythm. And the original 12" vocal version plus Bonus Beats 1 is reason enough to buy this CD. This is the song that everybody was rockin' during the summer of 82'. Classic jam that made all the b-boys and b-girls start breakin' and poppin'!
It just brings back the early sound and feel of hip hop that I miss so much. None of this "bling bling" crap that's going around now. This song gave birth to the entire "electro funk" scene which in turn influenced other styles of dance music like hard house, techno, etc. Add this to your collection of old school CD's and call yourself a true hip hop head!!!

2 out of 5 stars Not really worth it.......2001-08-06

If I had to rate this album on only one of the tracks it would be number 6 and in that case it would get a 5 star rating. On the "Bass in the Planet Mix" we are given a treat from someone who is truly a standout in their field, Magic Mike. The other tracks are dry and out of touch with the traditional Planet Rock feel we are used to. I believe that Magic Mike almost takes the song to another level. 808 probably doesn't have any business touching this song nor do any of the other artists who serve up their humble offerings here. Of course, we are given the original version on the first track but outside of that the only other reason to buy this disc is Magic Mike's cut.

1 out of 5 stars Stop! Stop that Music!.......2001-07-17

I have an extensive collection of music similar to this particular type of sound, however, I was largely disappointed when I heard this CD. I listen to... regularly and after I listened to Planet Rock, I bought it. This is not the tune Swedish Egil is spinning, nor ANYTHING like it. This CD is intrusive compared to today's techno sounds. Perhaps just ahead of its time then, it's beyond its time now. All of the songs are the same bad song, just louder. It doesn't carry you away, it sends you away...

5 out of 5 stars great and unmatched.......2001-07-10

i have owned this cd for some time now and i still listen to it from time to time a must have if you like old school.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Collection of Artists!!!.......2002-03-01

BET did us a favor and started a show called,"Planet Groove". And while the show received the axe in favor of something else better, at least these songs survived. These songs are by newcomers and old-timers. Janet (yes, that Janet. Miss Jackson because she's nasty) starts it off with her soft, "I Get Lonely." Mariah suffers from a "Breakdown" (no pun intended) with the help sometime R-N-B singer/rapper thugs, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Mya proclaims her womanhood in, "It's All About Me", with former Dru Hill frontman, Sisqo. A nice catchy tune, without any male-bashing. Brian McKnight slows it down a bit with "Anytime", a perfect song about reminiscing on a past someone/relationship. Jon B adds his "They Don't Know" to the already impressive list of songs. Chico (good thing he dropped "DeBarge" from his moniker) returns with soulful crooner, Joe, on the "No Guarantee" (remix). Honestly, folks, I like this one better than the original. Next sings the praises of a woman "who has that bomb lovemaking. She also has a "...sundress on, feet pedicured with no corns..." in "Butta Love." (Sounds like someone has a foot fetish to me. But hey, whatever floats your boat.) Ms. Badu comes back and brings and ill-fated unwanted visitor, "Tyrone." In the opening lines, you can feel her animosity. "I'm getting tired of your ...!" {Gee, if breaking up was just that easy!} That was an original, that came (surprise!) impromptu but was also featured on her "Live!" album as well as a remix that was even longer. Keith Sweat, Johnny Gill and Gerald Levert formed the ill-fated group, LSG. But before they split and went on their separate ways, they created the monster hit, "My Body". Lyrics like..."want to feel your precious treasure wrapped around me oh-so-tightly. In, out and want to hear you shout...", you'll see why women were losing their minds all over the world!!! R. Kelly's protege, Sparkle, reminds that we should "Be Careful." Montell Jordan gets down and dirty with the help of Master "Make'em Say Unggghhhh" P. and his brother, Silk the Shocker on "Let's Ride," where he sings about a woman being "5'5, 146 and wearing nothing but a Gstring. Chocolate lips and sexy thighs..." I think you get the picture! SWV sings about "The Rain", a slow tune about someone's love coming down like rain. Boyz II Men give praises to their mommas on "A Song for Mama", a tune that was first featured on the Soul Food Sdtrk. I think I liked it better on that sdtrk than I do here. There is entirely too much raunchiness going on to be singing to Mama. Xscape returns to their roots, as well as their churchy-sound, on "The Arms Of The One Who Loves You," a slow tune about if things just don't work out, I can kiss away your boo-boo's and make it better! This entire album is worth the money that I spent and then some. Go get this one!

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite CD's.......1999-11-25

I love this CD especially the last song on it. Definately a good buy

5 out of 5 stars This is the most bomb CD out!.......1999-04-16

This CD is so bomb. It has every song that I like. This saves me money because I like to go and buy my favorite songs, but the I would have to buy alot of different CD's for one song each. This is the most bomb idea out, all the best songs out in one CD. My personal favorite(aside from all the other ones on the CD) is Mariah Carey in "Breakdown". That is truely the best. I love this CD and I love Planet groove. Keep doing ya' thang Rachel!

5 out of 5 stars This CD is a must buy!.......1999-04-12

This CD has the best songs! It is great to have a CD I can listen to all the time. I'm so happy they put Janet on this CD. Buy this CD right now.

4 out of 5 stars NOT BAD AT ALL !!!.......2002-12-24

If you skip over "Set You Free", all of the other tracks are decent to very good techno-rave style tracks. The highlights are the intro, "Feel the Music", "Track Me Down", "Believe in Yo Self", "Cosmic Orgazim" and the remaining tracks on the disc. Worth having in your music collection.

3 out of 5 stars REALLY GOOD MUSIC FOR THE CAR OR TO SHAKE YOUR BOOTY.......1999-05-17

4 out of 5 stars The Vocabulistic Cali Agent.......2000-04-13

This EP is seriously dope. Being that Asia is in my opinion the best emcee, i obviously love this CD. He flips words unlike any other with an indescribable flow. The production is also pretty good; mellow and head nodding beats. The only thing that's bad about this record is the length; only 7 tracks. If you appreciate real hip hop though, this is a must-buy

4 out of 5 stars planet asia... ill MC.......2000-04-12

planet asia has raw lyrical skills on this joint but yo... the beats were incredibly WACK! i couldnt believe how bad they were i could only stand one. but i gave him 4 stars cause hes an ill mc. one.

    3 out of 5 stars Wack overall.......2000-02-15

The first song was cool ya know and then....it got worse. I thought the best beat was the first one and unfortunately you've gotta hear it again. His rhymes are tight, but the production crew leaves much to be desired. He should've stuck with Peanut Butter.

4 out of 5 stars Favorite Dub Syndicate.......2007-03-16

This is my favorite Dub Syndicate release: I own a couple. This CD is some of the "newer" dub that I first heard back in the mid 90's. I'm not sure what one of the previous reviewers was talking about when they mentioned levels fluctuations, because I heard this for the first time cranked over a newly installed theater sound system during a system check by the tech's and it sounded great!
I'm a fan of Augustus Pablo, King Tubby and Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Syndicate does sounds different. Not a lot of horns and definitely a more synthesized sound, but I have to agree "no lack of rhythm and groove".

2 out of 5 stars Not so great Techno-Dub.......2003-08-11

Yes, this cd contains some spacey stereo effects. But, overall this is a poorly put together piece. The sound levels fluctuate, the stereo washes are inaccurate, the musicianship is minimal. Buy the cheapest used copy you can find if you must buy this cd.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music to 'Chill' To.......1999-01-03

Fear of a Green Planet is a Reggae/Techno hybrid. There is no lack of rhythm and groove in this CD. There is also a healthy dose of spacey, cosmic sound. If you like newer reggae, such as Ziggy Marley or Finley Quaye for the sound more than the lyrics, then this CD is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Review from a 40 year old pale male whale.......2002-06-25

The 40+ pale-male-whale demographic is not your primary target, so my opinions on individual songs are what works for me and what doesn't.

I tend to like the ballad-type stuff, but the faster "I Know What You Thinkin" is a great opening song. I tend to shy away from rap stuff, so the next two songs didn't do much for me.

"Hello My Love" just blew me away -- great song, fantastic ballad. Pinay all have great voices, and this track showcases them so well.

If you like gospel, you'll enjoy "I'mma Be Just Fine" and "Unconditionally." If you were alive in the 80s, you might like the Jets cover too!

5 out of 5 stars pinay what now.......2002-06-18

just simply superb..i was amazed with the talent and music..im extremely pleased , worth it

    4 out of 5 stars I'm lovin It.......2002-06-14

Pinay is FINALLY back! This album is a lot more focused than their first effort, with more of an emphasis on dance/r&b, than Inevitable's 'all-over-the-place' feeling. I've got tracks 1-3 playing over and over in my car stereo, looking like a fool, grooving in my car seat during rush hour. Of course, the ballads are strong as well, but that was expected with these girls' heavenly voices. However, its the faster songs like "I Know What You Thinkin", "What Now", and "I Came To Party" that surprised me. I hope their record label can get them some radio and club play because these songs deserve to be out there. If you're looking for a CD to party to, this is it.!

Justin Warfield is the son of an African-American father and a Jewish-American mother in L.A., and he tries to combine progressive hip-hop with Beatlesque bohemia on his debut album. The crude boast that he's "a beatnik mack ready to attack" illustrates how little he understands bohemia, and the boring, static beats underneath exposes how little he understands rhythm. Warfield's fiasco is the clearest example possible that there's a lot more to integrating disparate musical elements than simply throwing them together. --Geoffrey Himes

This man has been inbetween and everywhere around the music industry. With his father a big timer in the music industry with making people like Sade famous, Justin Warfield is just pure amazing. He went through bands like One Inch Punch to Tape and now to an amazing alternative/new wave band called SHE WANTS REVENGE. He appeared randomly around and there. From the Romeo and Juliet movie soundtrack to being a guest MC with Placebo in "Spite and Malice". This guy has pure talent and you should all definately check out his new band called She Wants Revenge. Collaborating with Dj Adam 12 (whom is even as amazing as Justin and very sweet guy not to mention) My Field Trip to Plan 9 is a GREAT hip hop album.. upbeat and twisting ryhmes. For fans for A Tribe Called Quest/De La Soul/Eric B & Rakim/Public Enemy.. this is for you..

....Are why I come her to buy music and not find it. They shouldn't let people who are outside of a genre write reviews for them. This album was definately a contender in hip hop's "Golden Years".

Don't listen the the herb that wrote that review, this album is smooth, tightly produced and hella funky.

      4 out of 5 stars Psychedelic rap.......2006-02-10

I have to agree that the Amazon reviewer missed the boat on this one -- this is considered a bit of a lost classic. I don't know if he was writing that review back in 1993, or more recently, but it exposes how little he understands Justin Warfield (or Prince Paul for that matter).

OK, so this isn't the best rap album I own, but it holds its own against "De La Soul Is Dead" and "Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde". This was released during rap's early-90's golden era, and the production and smooth rhyming style reflect this.

All the name-checking of random countercultural references gets a little annoying, but on the whole this is pretty solid album. And why "Thoughts In The Buttermilk" didn't become a hit, I'll never know.

Oh yeah, and check out his new band She Wants Revenge. Apparently he's REALLY into Interpol lately.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best rap albums i own.......2005-02-15

Instantly, I took to the music. Acid trippy, but not Cypress Hill exactly. The production is AMAZING, and songs COOL LIKE THE BLUES and DRUGSTORE COWBOY will have repeat visits on your computer/cd player.

Groovy, but never hippie, cool but unpretentious, it's perfect chillout music with a funky verse flow.

      1 out of 5 stars Misleading.......2004-08-05

I was not told at the time of ordering a CD from this seller that the version I was buying was edited for radio. Extremely misleading and definitely requesting a refund.

This is an excellent CD. You will find yourself listening to this CD over and over and loving it even more every time you listen to it. This is defiantly a CD to listen to all the way through with out skipping one song.

5 out of 5 stars House music extraordinaire.......1998-11-26

Don't be misled by the title. This is not really Techno. It's deep house-some of the best I've ever heard. While PLANET SOUL and JOYCELYN ENRIQUEZ are the only big names on the CD, the other songs are excellent too. You'll get into The Rhythm with BEAT DOMINATOR and KATALINA will have you in the Sonic Groove. The songs have a way of working themselves into your head and just get better every time you play them.
