Writer-director Marc Lawrence's romantic comedy gently satirizes the music industry's past and present via Hugh Grant's Alex Fletcher, a has-been Rock of the '80s icon given another shot at the charts by young pop diva Cora Corman (newcomer Haley Bennett). Grant gives some surprisingly credible--if often gently tongue-in-cheek--performances in his musical debut; indeed, he carries better than half the soundtrack with his earnest vocal charms. The production gets key help from Fountain of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger, who contributes a delicious, loving send-up of Wham! courtesy of "Meaningless Kiss," the emotive piano confessional "Don't Write Me Off," and two versions of "Way Back into Love," the comeback ballad/duet that drives the story line. A playful demo version of the latter pairs Grant with co-star Drew Barrymore (playing the florist who becomes Fletcher's unlikely songwriting foil), while Grant's ultimate duet with young Bennett evokes contemporary pop conceits with a keen, affectionate flair that also graces the young singer's Britney-esque "Buddha's Delight," "Slam," and the more obviously snarky "Entering Bootytown." Rounding out the collection are a pair of complimentary tracks by Swedish pop acts: The Sounds' bouncy "Tony the Beat" and the club-slinky groove of Teddybears' "Different Sound." Highlighted by Grant's sympathetic vocals and a knowing musical sensibility that never quite lapses into mere parody, it's a pop-lover's delight from start to finish. --Jerry McCulley

The Problem Is - I Want More.......2007-07-12
This is another instance where I thought the movie was, ".....eh", but I love the soundtrack.
I was a little irked at what I felt was another attempt to show that the 80s was nothing more than a vapid, superficial decade which only produced goofy, forgettable, lightweight fluff. Yes, there was a lot of that, but there were also many serious, moving, culture-defining moments as well. If we want to assume that "My Humps" summarizes all of the music produced during the current decade, then I'll buy in that "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" was what the 80s was all about.
Anyway, half of songs here are designed to sound like they came out in the mid-80s; obviously the ones Hugh Grant sings on are supposed to be like the equivalent of Wham! (not that Wham! was a synth-pop band, but whatever). And I have to say - they're great songs, and it's a pleasant surprise that Hugh sings; his voice works well with these songs!
When I went to see this movie, people in the audience were laughing at the "music video" for "Pop Goes My Heart", and I was like, "Why are you laughing?? Videos were in its infancy back then, so many of them by today's standards appear kind of goofy!" Awesome song; love the "crash" after "Pop" during the chorus. "Meaningless Kiss" is a great knock-off of "Careless Whisper" (whatever happened to the infamous saxophone solos anyway?). "Tony The Beat" is reminiscent of "Push It" by Salt N' Peppa, and for the longest time I couldn't decide if the singing during the chorus was annoying or not; eventually I decided it wasn't (although just barely).
Now, on the "current day" songs, I love the Haley Bennett songs; the best being "Buddha's Delight" and especially "Entering Bootytown." I know these songs were written to sound like the typical Britney Spears/teen pop music from a few years back, but they're great songs regardless. There's no reason why these songs wouldn't (or shouldn't) be as popular as songs by the artists in which they were inspired by.
I was angered that Haley's songs were so wonderful, but that she was just playing a character for this movie and I'd never hear anything else from her. However, I see that she will be coming out with her own album soon.
I have to commend the writers of the songs on this soundtrack. They wrote songs as if to sound like they came from a specific time period, but still they created some great songs. However the problem with loving songs by these fictional characters is that - you want more, and unfortunately it's just relegated to this one album. If Haley's material sounds anything like what appears on this soundtrack, at least that will pacify my desire to hear more from her.
Music and Lyrics CD.......2007-07-11
Excellent collection of lighthearted songs from the movie. I never knew Hugh Grant had such talent! I memorized all the songs within the first week after buying the CD.
Music and Lyrics Soundtrack.......2007-07-07
I loved this movie, and I have watched it over and over again. The CD is also one of my favorites that I listen to constantly. I was very impressed by the duet, "Way Back Into Love," with Hugh Grant and Haley Bennett. All of Haley's songs were great, especially "Entering Bootytown." This little girl is a cutie, and I expect to see her become a big hit when she releases her first CD, soon. I think Hugh's solo, "Don't Write Me Off," is very good. I had no idea he could sing so well, and Drew Barrymore didn't do bad, either, with her demo version of "Way Back Into Love." It was worth the money just to hear the Haley/Hugh duet of "Way Back Into Love." They made a great team, and the song has wonderful lyrics, with a haunting melody. Loved it, loved it, loved it!
What's Wrong with a Bit of Meaningless Fluff?.......2007-07-06
Oh people...this has NO redeeming features except extraordinary chemistry between always-cute-and-sexy Hugh Grant and remarkably-focused Drew Barrymore in a simply silly but very lovely tale of a self-proclaimed has-been Eighties rocker (Grant)who commandeers his plant-care lady (Barrymore) to write some lyrics he badly needs in 48 hours.
And why does he need these lyrics? Because the greatest female pop icon of all time, Cora (played brilliantly by newcomer Haley Bennett, hilarious as a cross between Britney Spears and Christine Aguilerra) has invited him to join her on her upcoming world tour--IF he can write the "perfect song." This would mean goodbye to performances at county fairs--goodbye to has-been-hood and hello to resurrected rock-hood!
Can they do it? Can they write THE song when they only know each other's names, are completely different in age, temperament, and just about everything else? Hey--this is Hollywood.
Just fun all the way through, and the songs (both from Grant's mythical Eighties band "Pop" and his "new" hits) are actually catchy. Very enjoyable.
Hugh, Drew, and Haley-an awesome musical pair!!.......2007-07-01
When I think of Hugh Grant I think of Elizabeth Hurley's ex with the proper British accent and the 90's floppy hair. I never expected such a beautiful voice!! Wow!!! The songs are beautifully written and Grant's soothing voice over the 80's pop melodies and beautiful piano ballads was addicting! Drew Barrymore and newcomer Haley Bennet, each with their different voices, made listening to the different versions of "Way Back Into Love" very enjoyable.

Is Sarah McLachlan a secret punk rocker? To be sure, her rebellion is hushed. On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan's music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices. Listen to what's being sung within this soothing aural bed, though, and hear the just-before-sleep murmurings of the quietest riot grrl: "I'm a train wreck waiting to happen.... a wildfire born of frustration," "How stupid could I be.... you're no good for me, but you're the only one I see," "I have to push just to see how far you'll go." The latter song ("Push") resolves itself with the assurance, "You complete me." Ultimately, McLachlan fans will be comforted again by what turns out to be her reliably untroubled aesthetic. --Rickey Wright

"I know you can't resist, trying to re-open a sore...".......2007-05-08
Afterglow by Sarah McLachlan is surprisely moving and wonderfully produced. I am not normally a McLachlan super-fan but some of her songs before this album are quite engaging. I decided to give this album a chance, standout tracks include: Time, Perfect Girl, Dirty Little Secret, Stupid, and Answer. Sarah's voice has improved and her lyrics are at its strongest. I could listen to the track, Time all day long, it sucks you in after the first 20 seconds, amazing! So whether you hate or love her, Afterglow will have you bathed in it for awhile. Enjoy!

I know that this review won't be very helpful, all I can say is that I love this album. Been listening to it for a couple of years now, and it's a fave when I'm in a mood to be mellow. I am giving this five stars so that amazon will recommend more music like this in my personal recommendations. Same with Fumbling Toward Ecstasy.
Classic Sarah.......2007-02-06
I can listen to this CD over and over and still find it refreshing and beautiful. Sarah's songs are soothing to my soul.

John Rutter Collection.......2007-02-19
This CD is one of several that features Rutter directing his own choir. It has a good cross section of the John Rutter compositions, and is a good starting place for someone who has not heard Rutter's music before. I think you will be "hooked" if you really love choral music.
Typically gorgeous Rutter.......2005-12-20
I love John Rutter's music. Especially the "For the Beauty of the Earth" that is on this CD. Rutter is not the most inventive or varied composer of modern music, but if you have a taste for traditional choral writing with some angelic children's chorus singing, then you will probably share my enjoyment of Rutter's writing. Unfortunately I cannot give this CD 5 stars when it seems there is a drum set tapping annoyingly away on several of the songs. I do not understand this at all and am bothered by it every time I listen to those songs. It's a shame, because otherwise I love the music, and think it is lushly written, and simply but beautifully performed. I would highly suggest listening to sample track 3 before purchasing -- you can hear what sounds like a ride-cymbal right at the very end of the sample. This sound occurs in several of the songs on this recording.
Wonderful!.......2005-12-03
I am a huge John Rutter fan. The lilting melodies, the poignant lyrics and the lush orchestrations make his music not only accessable but also uplifting. This compilation, although drawing from many other previous recordings, is a great composite of his wirk. The sound is exquisite. Even if you own other recordings of this music, this is worthwhile.
To sample Rutter's best music, this is the one........2005-06-30
I purchased this CD as an introduction to the music of John Rutter and went on to purchase many more of his compositions. Still, this remains my favorite collection. It is choral music at its absolute finest. Far from "just church music", this CD has songs of faith, a few Christmas carols, a Celtic song for lovers, and even a child's tune or two. While most of the pieces are peaceful, warm, and thought-provoking, a few are up-tempo and lively. In my opinion, it is a perfectly balanced collection in which one song flows beautifully into the next with no sense of a jarring change of pace. If you have any interest in choral music, begin with the best...John Rutter... and this superb arrangement. Highly recommended.
The Best.......2005-04-29
The John Rutter Collection in my opinion is one of the finest and most perfect works I've ever heard. The Cambridge Singers demonstrates the best vocal discipline and style of any vocal group in the world.

A children's album, influenced by James Taylor, Bob Dorough (Schoolhouse Rock) and Randy Newman, Great Big Sun is full of songs that are by turn humorous, educational and poignant yet never lose the wide-eyed naiveté of childhood.·
Great Big Sun is directly responsible for some of the fondest memories I will have of our twin daughters infancy. In fact, I'm so fond of [Great Big Sun] that I've played it for my own enjoyment when the girls were nowhere near. - Lou Diamond Phillips, Film Actor

Great CD!! Parents & kids can enjoy!!!.......2007-01-10
My son heard one of Justin's songs on a kids network. I searched for the CD and I'm so glad I tracked it down. ALL of the songs on this CD are catchy and singable - without driving parents crazy if they have to listen to it over and over.
Not just for kids.......2006-06-06
This quirky and smart CD is one that my kids love and is never tiresome to me. I often listen to this CD even when my kids are not around. It is just that good. His puts on a great live show.

My daughter, age 2.5 sings every song on this CD. Little Raindrop being our favorite...along with Everything else starts with E. .... no wait we love the WHOLE thing!! You will too!
Great CD you and your family will enjoy.......2005-07-13
I have been working backwards through the JR catalog and this second title I own by this artist. Great Big Sun is catchy, humorous, intelligent, soulful (yes I said soulful describing a children's album) and positive. The title track (Great Big Sun) sets a high bar and the tone followed by refreshingly creative new spins on counting ('If you got 1'), the alphabet ('Everything else starts with e' and 'a,b,c,d,e'), and childhood ('Apple tree'). The themes are relevant to life, no matter what age. The only negatives compared to 'Way Out' are the run time is a little short at 31:56 and 'Do You Wanna Go' does not fit in with the other songs in speed or tempo. However, this is music you and your family will enjoy..."Aint gonna let no wolf run my life"...
first songs my kids clapped for.......2005-01-11
My boys get so excited when we play this CD. Fortunately, it is very easy for adults to listen to as well. There are a couple tracks on this CD - everytime we here them my 18 month old applauds.

Customer Reviews:
Very difficult and not at all helpful for our situtation.......2007-06-26
We have an adopted daughter who came from India at 15 months of age. She was in an orphanage prior to that, and missed out on a lot of the personal attention that helps develop early speech. As such, at almost three now, she is considered "speech delayed," and is still having problems making certain sounds that should be old-hat to her.
Naturally, we are taking her to a speech pathologist/therapist, but we are also trying to do "casual" things in our everyday life to help, including, of course, singing.
I bought this CD because I saw that it was for sale on the Talking Child web site, and we had found their Baby Babble DVD very helpful for Chandra earlier in our journey. Unfortunately, while the songs ARE sung at a much slower pace, some of them are nearly unrecognizable as the familiar children's tunes they are. The two most notable examples are "The Eentsy Weentsy Spider," which is over-performed and sung nearly aria-style, and "The Alphabet Song," which is sung by someone donning a Professor Ludwig Von Drake German accent!
Those songs are usually two of Chandra's favorites, which we sing slowly enough for her to follow the words and sing along, but she clearly did not recognize that the songs we were listening to on this CD were songs she'd ever heard before.
If nothing else, I've learned not to buy music that doesn't have tracks available for previewing. I'm returning this to Amazon, and I hope to find something more suitable for our needs.
Great as background-Hard to sing.......2007-04-06
THe arrangements are very original which is great as background music but makes them hard to sing along with, unless you do it every day.
Great for kids with special needs or speech delays!!!!.......2006-07-10
We bought this cd for our daughter who has Down Syndrome. She is 6 years old but still has difficulty articulating words together in a sentence and will often skip over words in songs because she cannot sing them as fast. This cd allows kids like my daughter to really hear the words clearly. Although it is slower than the songs would normally be, it is great for kids who have a delay because they have the time to process what they just heard and repeat it back more accurately. Then, when they try to sing the songs at the regular speed, they can do so with more accuracy and comprehension. Our daughter still loves her other cd's, but this just gives her one more way to help her with her speech skills. We plan to get the Christmas cd as she listens to Christmas music all year long!!! :
Great Intentions; Didn't Blow Me Away.......2006-07-03
I think that for special needs kids, children who are a little slower to talk, or kids just having problems with anunciation or expression, this CD presents an incredible opportunity in being able to share traditional, fun, upbeat and lively children's music with your kids. The notion of slowing down the words, if not the music, is fantastic as it gives kids a better grounding in what is being said, proper anunciation, etc.
The only knock I have against the CD is that the voices are quite operatic. I think this is an interesting choice as the delivery is certainly emotive and forceful, but I think it would have worked with the intent a little better if the singers weren't so operatic and instead sung in a clear, even, and less ornate fashion.
Overall, a fatnastic idea; but one that slightly works against its purpose.
Perfect for apraxic toddlers.......2006-03-09
The front of the CD says "Helps Build Language Skills" and part of the description on the back says "...the words are sung at a slower tempo so that any child can sing along - even a child just learning to speak". The CD doesn't fail to offer what it clearly states if you read it!
My children appreciated the different ways these songs were sung; for instance "If You're Happy and You Know It" had an African rhythm to it.
The words were spoken very clearly and I was able to sign along without having to do it so rapidly my toddler couldn't follow.
This CD gets the interest of my 33 month old toddler and he likes to listen to it while his older siblings and I sign along with it. I would say that is money well spent!

Hap Palmer may be best known for his vocal contributions to the hugely popular Baby Songs video series, but parents of 2- to 5-year-olds, particularly those with a sturdier than average educational bent, will find a lot to love on Early Childhood Classics: Old Favorites with a New Twist. This release rids itself of tiresome attempts to turn performances of simple songs like "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" into minor personal masterpieces and instead injects its de rigueur dose of creativity directly into familiar lyrics. For instance, while there's the usual cow and pig on Old MacDonald's farm, we're also introduced to Henrietta's House, where there's a cat, Zebediah's zoo with its tiger, and the puppy in Pamelina's pet shop. Similarly, instead of the usual "Pat-a-Cake" cliffhanger, where the cake's put in the oven and that's all she wrote, we get to hear the ding-ding-ding when it's done and layer on the frosting. The sequence of songs is repeated instrumentally after Palmer's interpretations to allow for sing-alongs and the dreaming up of more new lyrics--a useful device for caregivers who think like teachers (those who don't, though, can make use of clever movement and activity suggestions in the liner notes). Each song's wordplay and simple rhymes are catchy enough to fall into the can't-fail category when it comes to enhancing vocabulary, phonics, and vocabulary skills, and the surprise lyrics lend themselves nicely to attentive listening. Early Childhood Classics delivers old-fashioned fun in a satisfyingly unsplashy way. --Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
Here is a joyful collection of all time favorite activity songs for young children. Hap Palmer's unique renditions preserve the charm and simplicity of traditional songs while adding new, original lyrics and melodies to extend and enrich the familiar classics.
The simplicity and repetition of these songs guarantee active participation by encouraging children to sing and move with the music. While having fun and participating actively, children develop motor and musical skills and learn about animals, counting, identification of body parts, and phonics. As children sing along, responding to the imagery and humor of the lyrics, reading readiness is also enhanced. Alliteration and rhyme develop a child's ear for the sounds of language - an important pre-reading skill.
These songs are developmentally appropriate for the very young child - infant to 5 years. However, the familiar melodies and contemporary arrangements also elicit surprisingly gusty participation from first and second grade students. A variety of musical styles adds new life to well known songs with swing, blue grass, country, classical, rock, pop, and blues arrangements.
Fifteen songs are presented with vocal interpretation. The sequence is then repeated instrumentally providing opportunities for singing along and creating new lyrics using children's ideas. The instrumental selections also familiarize children with the sounds of a variety of musical instruments including piano, bass, drums, guitar, violin, viola, cello, trumpet, trombone, tuba, French horn, saxophone, flute, English horn, accordion, and a variety of percussion instruments such as conga drums, bougaraboo drum, ouiro, shaker, wood block and tambourine.
The instrumental versions of each song can be used in the following ways:
1. After children have learned words with the vocal version, they can sing along hearing only the music.

Early Childhood Classics - Old Favorites With A New Twist.......2007-05-26
We listen to this CD almost evry day while driving around in the car. My daughter loves singing the songs!!! They are all good. Well worth the money!!
One of the best young children's CDs!.......2006-02-24
My almost 4 year old is a huge Hap Palmer fan, and it's catching on to me. Just listen to one of his CDs, and you'll understand. This one in particular is great. I love how he makes beloved children songs even better. I never thought I'd be just as happy to hear a children's CD as one of my own, but this is so catchy, and it is priceless hearing my young daughter singing along to the words! It's great for her memory skills, remembering and singing to all the songs, and it's great for her learning rhyme and rhythm. The lyrics he adds are sooo fun and cathy and sweet. I love this guy!
Great Kid Tunes.......2006-02-18
I bought this for my daughter, who is two, and my older kids love it as much as she does. Easy to remember lyrics and catchy tunes make this a great cd to listen to.
Great music, great twist.......2005-10-28
If standard kid's tunes play in your house or car all day long, you will love this refreshing cd and your kid's won't miss a beat. I don't understand the 2 star review. If you don't like something, that's fine. But the reviewer's logic is very skewed in that they said it didn't meet their expectations, even though 1) The cd was a gift, and 2) The title of the cd tells you that it's not an album of "to-the-letter" standards. So if you don't like the music or your child doesn't like it, fine. But don't rate it down because you had ridiculous expectations from something you didn't even want or buy. If you are open-minded and enjoy good, fun, music you will love this. There is varied musical accompaniment and Hap sings great and truly seems to feel the music (unlike most performers of children's standards). Of course, the ultimate critic is the child. My daughter LOVES this cd (she's 21 months old now and has been listening to it since 12 months). Again, if you want standard kid songs, you may be disappointed with this because the music and words are different (usually, each song starts in a traditional manner but then non-standard lyrics and music follow). But if you want a twist without leaving the traditional songs altogether, buy this. I don't think you will be disappointed.
A favorite at library storytime.......2005-10-19
I'm a children's librarian in Illinois and this cd has become one I use at almost every storytime. I especially love "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" because it contains a verse inserted by Hap Palmer which allows me to introduce Shakespeare to the tiniest child. He uses a line from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" -- "silver bow new bent in heaven" to describe the moon. I have entire families singing along, learning a famous quotation painlessly! And it's a beautiful, calming song to use at the end of a storytime. Parents and kids love it!

Album Description
Imagination Movers combine pop, hip-hop, rock and world music with educational themes for kids and their parents. The Movers sing about healthy eating, separation anxiety, sibling rivalry and other topics that relate to being a little kid, but the group's musical style has a decidedly grownup groove. Think Mr.. Rogers meets the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Regardless of how you describe it, Movers music is catchy stuff that parents and children will want to listen to over and over again!
The Movers' new disc, "Calling All Movers," features the band's trademark blend of kid-friendly themes and sophisticated rock and hip-hop music. "Please and Thank You" is a Caribbean-touched homage to every parent's three favorite words. The call-and-response jam "What's in the Fridge" is evidence of the Movers' continued obsession with snack food. And "First Day of School" is a sentimental look at a milestone from a child's point of view. These and 12 other new Movers tunes will be favorites in family CD players for years to come.

The Movers Rock!.......2007-03-13
My 2-year-old loves these guys! Ever since the first time she saw them on Playhouse Disney, they have been her favorite. And now they're mine! All of their songs are loaded with good messages and I love all the musical influences. Each song is different and great in its own way. I just cannot say enough good things about the Movers, and especially this album. Check out "Looking Out the Window" (one of my favorites) and "First Day of School" (my daughter's favorite, along with "I Want My Mommy" from "Good Ideas"). We also bought the Movers' "Good Ideas" album and love that as well (although personally, I prefer this one!). :-)
Fun for Parents, too!.......2007-02-18
This music is GREAT. We are from New Orleans, but unfortunately never attended an Imagination Movers performance! I am kicking myself now. My sons, ages 4 and 2, request this music every time we get in the car. And I enjoy listening and singing along, too. It's like good adult music with kid lyrics. Can't beat it! Thanks you guys.
Think outside the box!.......2005-11-16
This guys are great! Kids love them! Parents can tune out the lyrics and the music will take you back to your college days! I've dropped my kids off at school and continued to listen without them in the car! Baton Rouge, LA
I got it - You get it!.......2004-11-24
We've had Good Ideas for a while and just bought Calling All Movers. Wonderful! Simply wonderful! My kids love the Fridge song and the Recipe song and I like Please and Thank you. Do youself a favor and buy this for your kids because this is real kids music - you'll get hooked too:)
Wow, a pleasant surprize!.......2004-07-31
My son got this as a gift for his 5th birthday. I heard it in the background one afternoon and walked to his room to see what it was. I was shocked when I listened to to lyrics and realized it was music for him. I sat an listened and watched him dance around. Remarkable music. Two thumbs up. One kids size and one grown up. Now I need to get their other CD.

FOR THE WHITE MAN IN ALL OF US .......2006-07-09
Well if you don't speak jive than let me translate, ive been a wheezy (lil wayne) fan for quite some time, seen him grow up back on guerilla Warfare (Hot boys cd that did really well) he has come a long way since squad up (old group wheezy was in) this Mixtape just shows the level of Maturity Wayne has reached, and for those who have any history with Cash Money, then u know what i mean, I love this mixtape, and was waiting for it for quite some time, like my friend below stated in his lovely mannor, this album really does bring tha heat, and u can feal it, pick this one up, this mixtape and Dedication 2, or W Carter Collection 2, all greats from and up and coming great
nuthin' but fire.......2006-02-25
yo, weezy is my favorite rapper and the suffix ain't nuthin' but that raw freestyle over anything weezy that people need to kno i wouldn't really compare this to tha carter 2 tho cause this is a mixtape and that's an album( but then again that's just me)
but yeah this joint fire and i think it's better than dedication cause by err mix tape birdman j.r. gets hotter and the beats are betta too.
but errbody should pick this joint up or get it from ya boi or sumthang..... 1

Growing Pains.......2006-01-27
This mix tape shows the maturity of lil wayne. i recommend this cd to all rap listner, this is the cd to have.
Yes He Did It Again.......2006-01-07
Lil Wayne is the best rapper alive the suffix lets you know why. This man is comes up with some of the best lyrics and if you think i'm wrong then let me know. I actually bought tha carter 2 before the suffix and me personally i think that it is better than tha carter 2.
It's A Straight Mixtape.......2005-12-19
I kind of like this mixtape, he did his usual just straight up freestyle on his whole album. I would give 5 stars but it just wasn't that hot from his Dedication (Mixtape)

Resplendent in voice and manner, José Carreras, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti deliver 21 songs of traditional sacred music and secular numbers in a remarkable 1999 live recording from the opulent Viennese concert hall (Konzerthaus), with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and a renowned choir. The Three Tenors are practically as famous as the faces of Mount Rushmore and inspire perhaps even more awe and adulation around the world than the four presidents. The performances--whether alone, in tandem, or simply as the threesome that has made them collectively famous--are generally impeccable for their passion, nuance, and sheer tour de force vocal artistry. Reaching often into the classical realm for such works as the traditional German carol "Susani," Strauss's and Brahms's "Wiegenlied," plus traditional Polish and Spanish pieces, the trio also visits Pavarotti's "Ave Maria, dolce Maria" (cowritten with Vittoriano Benvenuti), and "Un nuevo siglo," written by Domingo's son. Only John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Christmas/War Is Over" doesn't quite work in this grand setting. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
First Christmas Album I bought for myself.......2007-01-16
Album is great. For any other holiday music, just listen to your local radio station that plays it during December.
wonderful.......2007-01-15
they are wonderful singers a delight to the ears and doing Christmas music made Christ mas even better
Wonderfully Different & Addicting! And All Your Friends Will Be Calling HOO-HOO!.......2005-08-23
First, let me state I don't listen to opera singers that much; thus, don't expect a hypercritical review here. (Really, is there ANY field of music that has more hypercritics than opera?) I got this CD simply because Columbia House had it on sale for $2.99, and I wanted some new Christmas CDs.
I found the CD delightful beyond words. It has some beautiful versions of well-known Christmas songs, as well as songs I've never heard before. "Carol of the Drum" and "War Is Over" are my two favorites, with "Sleigh Ride" a close third.
Sure, there is some tripping over of words by these three great opera stars...but that makes it even more enhancing in my opinion. Pavarotti was particularly amusing when he was singing: "And all our friends are calling 'HOO-HOO'!" (Watch the DVD for Carreras' reaction to that one!) And let's not forget Pavarotti singing: "I'll be home for Christmas. You can PLAY on me."
The children's chorus is great, the Vienna Symphony is great...and, once again, buy or rent the DVD so you can get the full affect of this astounding Christmas concert...the music, the lights, the colors, and the marvelous Steven Mercurio conducting it all.
Wonderful and funny compilation.......2005-03-09
The Three Tenors are, of course, wonderful to listen to. This is also a funny CD. When they sing the more modern songs (Happy Christmas by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, for example) they have trouble keeping up with the pace of the song. They almost sound like they're tripping over the syllables, because as opera singers they are more accustomed to long, drawn out vowels, not fast ones. This doesn't hurt the song at all, it makes it more interesting to listen to. It's a great CD. I would recommend this as an addition to any collection of Christmas music.
A historical meeting..........2004-11-28
Although several labels already had Christmas albums of the three tenors in their catalogue, the three maestros never actually trioed on these releases. When Plácido Domingo and the "Christmas in Vienna" team started preparing the eighth concert in the series (six predecessors were captured by Sony, and one, titled "Celebration of Christmas" issued by Erato-Warner), they made a monumental decision: Re-uniting three of the greatest voices of the current music business.
For one and a half hour, Carreras, Domingo and Pavarotti performed the greatest Christmas songs and carols from around the world. Nearly 65 minutes of this monumental concert are captured on this disk. The opening version of "O Holy Night" (aka "Cantique De Noel", "Minuit, Chrétien") by Domingo and Pavarotti would be reason enough to get this one. But wait, there is far more on the way, than selections from the classical genre. The real enjoyment starts, when the three tenors do one of the most romantic arrangements of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" ever heard and fade from a rousing "La Virgen Lava Pa`nales" into one of the finest treatments of "I'll Be Home For Christmas" ever heard. Also of great interest is the trio arrangement of "Let It Snow!", which is included on some of the import versions and on the DVD.
If you are a hopeless completist like me, you may be asking, what happened to the 25 minutes cut from the CD release. Well, first let me say, that none of the currently available releases has the order of the songs as they were performed in the concert. Although this is a live recording, handclaps and other characteristics of a live recording are hardly audible on the CD version. Two tracks, "Jingle Bells" and "Let It Snow", which had clearly audible handclaps at the beginning and at the end of the performance (and therefore couldn't be faded out) can be found on the mentioned import disk and on the DVD's PCM soundtrack. "Children of Christmas" (a Plácido Domingo Jr. composition originally introduced in "Christmas In Vienna IV" by Plácido Domingo and Michael Bolton) and "Ay" Para Navidad" can be found exclusively on the DVD. Currently unavailable on any official release is the "Overture" (which can be found on the DVD, but abridged with sound effects). So here's the actual running order: "Overture", 20, 2, 1, 11, 3, 4, "Children of Christmas", 16, 17, 6, 15, 8, "Let it snow", 5, "Ay! Para Navidad", 9, 19, 14, 18, 12, 13, "Jingle Bells", 7, 21, 10;
If you still doubt about the quality of this performance, let me say one for sure: As other volumes in the series will slowly disappear (as some of them have already in the US), this one is a matter of decades and when you buy this one, you will have joyful Christmas hours for many, many Christmases to come.
