5 out of 5 stars A beautiful mix of world music - better then all others in the series .......2005-10-25

I find this Trance Planet CD to be the best out of all of them. I am especially keen on Blue Asia's track, 'Mourn, Sob and Cry', which is an interesting song that could easily find it's way onto a various artists soundtrack. This is a very good CD that all should enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It is still a great series.......2004-09-28

I have not been disappointed in any of this series and if they produce any more of them I will gladly buy them. This particular album didn't seem to have as many songs that varied in pace and style as the other five. Still, it was a welcome addition to my collection.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment compared to previous volumes.......2003-07-26

I regret I must differ in my opinion on this volume in the Trance Planet series. I adore the previous 5 volumes. I play them over and over, enjoying their richness and depth.

There is a key difference between those volumes and this one. The previous volumes were complied by Tom Schnabel. This one was not. Clearly, it requires a special touch to compile world music in such a way as to create a cohesive whole from disparate works and Tom has that magic touch.

Unfortunately, it was lacking in this CD. I played it once and I doubt I will ever play it again, though I might isolate one or two songs to listen to. It doesn't have replayability or cohesion of the previous volumes, in my opinion.

It feels to me that this CD focuses less on finding interesting music that works together within a theme, and instead tried to throw together the most odd and unique forms of fusion that could be found. Some songs made the error of borrowing too much from Western music and not necessarily the best aspects of it. Thus you get the most boring, repetitious use of a techno-trance beat instead of something new and original. Someof the more traditional music done in fusion was all right, but some of it simply did not work that well and failed to hold my interest.

I do like that the compiler used many women artists, especially women who have overcome bias in their cultures to learn their instruments. But first and foremost, I need music I want to listen to more than once.

From the point of view of someone who has always purchased the Trance Planet volumes, I must say that unless the next volume is compiled by Tom Schnabel again, I won't be buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Trance Planet does it again!!!.......2003-02-20

I will give my breakdown of this cd song by song...w/* songs being my favorite... (although I enjoyed them all on different levels)...

*1. Hawa - Agricantus - Hauntingly beautiful...
2. Kummand'i - Max Lasser - Stunning Afro-Euro blend
w/enchanting vocals and guitar work...
3. Chottie See - Long live Nusrat in Spirit!!! His voice is
heavenly as well as the instrumentation...
4. Toroyo - Issa Bagayogo - Mali produces some of the most
amazing vocalists, this one nonewithstanding... A fine mellow
Afro-Electro song...
*5. Sunset - Nitin Sawhney - This song is a good representation
of the Indian Ethno Techno scene - it has a very trip hop
feel - which for me is good since I love trip hop...
6. Manhem - My favorite part of this song is I the bamboo flute
(ney) floating over the rest of the song seamlessly...
*7. Kaar Deerge Chouvulangnig - Simple in this song's use of
only her unique voice over electric guitar, but complex in
it's beauty...
8. Mourn, Sob and Cry - Very unique Asian/Reggae mix...
9. Hakmet Lakdar - This song implores a perfect sense of
rhythmic insrumentaion...
10. Cancion Para Dormir a Uno Nino - Beatriz Pichi Malen - This
song is a sweet Mapuche lullabye... Kudos to her for
keeping her culture alive through her music...
11. Udho Hot Kaha Sumujhaye - Tripti Mukherjee - Her singing is
flawlessly divine on this song...
*12. Aiso Chanchal - Shivu Taralagatti - Another perfectly
divine voice from India that smoothly glides over the
lush orchestral instrumentation... This song is a call to
awaken life early morning life - and in it's sublime
beauty - it certainly will...

Trance Planet does it again with another seamless collection of songs from the melting pot of the musical world... Next step is for Trance Planet to include a little more indigenous North American Indian music...

Note: This music is perfect to include in a chill out/mellow out dj set...

...peace - DJ Dakini

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Welcome to Trance Planet.......2005-12-29

This CD is cool. There is no other way to decribe it, it is just very, very cool. It's not pretentious like some compilations can be. In fact, it is very unassuming...it's like a great Presence...a Power...that doesn't care if it's not noticed and doesn't care if it is. To me, that's the ultimate in musical statements because I don't believe one should have to be clubbed over the head in order for one to notice the power and the intensity of the music. Music should grab you...gently....it should have its way with you...magically...it should give you a sense of direction without forcing you to go its way.

This is the kind of music that's perfect for a night of lovemaking. It works its subtle rhythyms through you and through the body of your partner bringing both of you to that place/that space where there is only the wholeness/the holiness of Spirit. It's not the kind of music for people who just want to exploit ritual and ceremony and connection and just want a ham sandwich and a soda 15 minutes later. It's all about depth, feeling, intimacy ...not for 20 year old hotshots with a brain full of baby-batter.

This music is smooth, kind, generous, and full of mystical properties. If you are willing to transform a leaden evening into a golden moment I suggest this soundtrack.

It's coooooool, man....

4 out of 5 stars Good sampler of diverse world music.......2004-02-24

"Trance Planet Volume 1" is one of those rare world music compilations that you can leave in your CD player from beginning to end. The range of cultures brought together here is pretty impressive: from Cape Verde to Tahiti, Mozambique to Argentina.

One of the standout tracks is the very first one: "Nwahulwana" by Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Mocambique, fading in with a simple guitar melody before the rich solo vocal begins. Other favorites of mine include "Two Lovers" by sitar virtuoso Ali Akbar Khan (a song which takes its time to build momentum, just like sitar playing itself), the melancholy acoustic guitar-driven Portuguese-sung "Sodade" by the 'Verdean Barefoot Diva' Caesaria Evora, and the outstanding oud-playing in Hassan Erraji's "Hammouda."

There are other tracks which I don't really care for and are too hackneyed in the "world fusion" genre for my taste, such as "Petition To Ram" by Jai Uttal, and the over-produced "The Game" by the late Pakistani qawwali maestro Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (this track in true essence should be credited to the studio producer, since Khan's voice is completely underutilized and taken completely out of any true qawwali or raag context).

That said, even the lesser songs somehow work when the CD is played altogether on a rainy Sunday afternoon while you're reading the newspaper. It flows pretty well, which must be credited to Tom Schnabel for having a great ear to patch so many disparate sounds into one listenable disc.

Before world music compilations kicked it up a notch with the Putamayo and Buddha Bar series (and similar albums), Trance Planet was the best thing around. "Volume 1" isn't really anything you'd hear playing at any trendy "multi-culti lounge", but something you'd probably hear at the coffeehouse down the street. Definitely give this disc a shot if the global journey you want to take is a smooth and mellow one.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasantly surprised.......2001-08-12

I bought this by mistake thinking it was something else (a similarly-titled psytrance comp), but ended up enjoying it enough to keep. Even if the music isn't trance in the sense that most people think of the genre, it certainly serves a similar calming, centering function. Also a good look at the forms trancey music takes in various parts of the world. Track 2 is haunting and beautifully done.

5 out of 5 stars The world on a disk.......2000-12-30

If this selection of world music is typical of what Tom Schnabel (the compiler) plays on his radio station in Santa Monica then I'm sorry that I can't tune in. I am glad however that there are other volumes of this excellent collection, and that they are readily available.

The selections in Vol. 1 are varied. Go on a magical music journey through Africa, Central Asia, the Indian Sub-continent, the Americas and the Pacific Islands. It's not just beautiful, melodic sounds from exotic countries, it's various musical instruments, such as the Sarod, the Arabic lute and clarinet and tubular harps accompanying different cultural styles of singing or alone as instrumentals.

Listen to the unusual ululation as used by Vox, the throat singing of Sainkho and the qawalli or 'utterances' on 'The Game' and you will quickly appreciate what a wonerful world of music is out there. Perhaps the best selections though are the ones showcasing the vocal talents. From Orchestra Marrabenta, Mother Tongue and the Tahitian Choir to Cesaria Evora's 'Sodade' and Jai Uttal's 'Petition to Ram' we get the full range of plaintive and haunting yet soothing and relaxing sounds. The album closes with the strongest vocals of all and the most stirring track - a live performance of Mercedes Sosa singing 'Gracias a la Vida'. Gracias indeed.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2000-06-29

I love this cd..the variety of world songs, carefully chosen to create a collection both soothing and energizing. I do yoga to this CD, and chose this one to play as I gave birth to my daughter.

Album Description

In this sequel to one of Six Degrees' best selling compilations, the label once again documents the extraordinary power and far-reaching influence of music from the Near and Middle East, and North Africa. Arabian Travels 2 explores the mesmerizing sounds of Arabic music and its influence on electronic, ambient, dance and dub music.

Critical praise for the first volume of Arabian Travels:

"While albums of a similar nature fall into a clichéd Eastern trip, Arabian Travels is genuine in its approach without over-producing songs to an unrecognizable level. Gorgeous and decadent." -Ottawa X-Press

"[This album] is a collection of studio-made dance tracks that mesh Middle Eastern elements with a synthetic dance-floor pulse... The hybrids find a middle ground where neither side is stifled - the kind of collaboration that could now be threatened by a new xenophobia." -New York Times

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Arabic club music.......2004-11-28

Six Degrees is my favorite world beat music label because they consistently have cutting edge world music, music of high quality that breaks all the boundaries, mixing sounds from all over the place. In this compilation of music centered around the Middle East and North Africa (soundwise, not necessarily where the musicians are from), you get a CD of ten songs with a good dance beat and rich in Middle Eastern sounds, but very modern, perfect for dancing in a high-tech club. The tempo of all but a couple of songs is medium-slow or slow, but in most songs the beat is heavy and certain, giving you something solid to move your feet to. The songs are mostly instrumental; when vocals are present, they are mostly used as instrumental ornaments rather than to sing lyrics. The label describes the album as one that "explores the mesmerizing sounds of Arabic music and its influence on electronic, ambient, dance, and dub music."

The album opens with "Sanati" by Toires featuring Natacha Atlas on vocals. Natacha Atlas is my favorite Arabic singer, so I'm glad to hear her voice opening up this album! My favorite song on this album, by far, is "Nar I Ney" by Mercan Dede. This is 9 1/2 minutes of dancing bliss! After I get through dancing to this energetic piece, I am out of breath! (Well, I am out of shape, but still, you get the picture.) "Allisallah" by Esoterica is a rather fun piece. "Funky Nawari" by Jef Stott featuring Reda Darwish lives up to its name in some funky Arabic dance material. Christophe Goze's song "Ja Vidi" is on this album and also found on the compilation album Bellylicious, which, like this album, is also one of my favorite albums of 2003. I've already got "Ja Vidi" on a mix tape, as well as "Allisallah" and of course, "Nar I Ney." "Twin Soul" by Kaya Project has a heavy jazz influence to it. The last two songs of the album wind things down: "Gatha" by Samsara Sound System takes a step from downtempo dance closer to ambient, while the closing track "Bedooneh Pashimoni" by Azadeh Abi and Holmes Ives goes completely ambient, with a dark, cloudy day sound.

When listening to Amazon's samples of this album, I recommend tracks #1 and #5 for this because they give the best representation of what the album sounds like. The songs on this album are club length, clocking in between 5 and 10 minutes long, so on the other samples, all you get is the introduction, before the song really gets going.

This is an excellent collection of enchanting, danceable, downbeat, mostly instrumental sounds that provide a pleasurable listening and dancing experience!

4 out of 5 stars Arabian Travels.......2003-10-17

The regions represented on this latest installment of the Six Degrees Travel Series - France, Canada, Germany, Japan, Ireland, Turkey, Egypt - read like a cross-section of the world map. But isn't this Arabian Travels 2? If there is one thing you cannot say about a Six Degrees release is that it is geographically constrained. For someone whose ears have not been exposed to Arabic/Middle Eastern music beyond that of Chebs Khaled and Mami, this was a great (albeit, electronic) primer to the diverse melodies that modern 'Arabian' music exponents can create. Its a shame I missed the first volume. A blunder I will soon make up for.

The first two tracks are pretty mellow and exotic excursions into dub and ambient territory. Montreal DJ Arkin Allen who records under the name Mercan Dede mixes Sufi mysticism with strings and electronic flourishes on "Nar I Ney." Next up is "Tender" which just bubbles with deep bass grooves and Middle Eastern strings to give us seven minutes of pure laidback chillout bliss, all courtesy of Stefan Müller (DJ Eastenders) who brought us the equally excellent Orientation 1 & 2. According to the label website, Makyo's "Shalale" was written with belly dancers in mind and once the percussion starts getting desperate at 5:09, all you wanna do is follow along to the handclaps that close out the gorgeous tune. Things do get a little more uptempo from the next track onwards which features the masterful percussion of Reda Darwish. Ever since Advent reviewed his album, I've been feenin' for a listen of Christophe Goze and I sure-as-hell was not disappointed. dZihan & Kamien now have major competition, at least in my book. Middle Eastern electronica at its finest.

The party doesn't stop on this one. One listen to this set of tunes and you'll be convinced that the Arabian Massive is giving its Asian counterpart a run for its money. Play this way loud at your next global jet set gathering and don't forget to take a toke...of the sheesha, that is.

5 out of 5 stars Tom Schnabel scores again!.......1998-09-01

Tom Schnabel, for many years the musical director of Santa Monica's trend-setting public radio station KCRW, has put together another mood-altering collection from premier and upcoming world artists. Just enough of each to, perhaps, induce one to seek out more of favorite performers. Schnabel has also taught "world-music" classes at UCLA, and is a most qualified "guide" for those seeking an entry into the strange and exotic world of "world." The world is shrinking, and one of the more salubrious effects of this is that music becomes more accessible to all who have ears to hear. D.Was/Not@aol.com

3 out of 5 stars Not aweful.......2007-06-27

It seems like the compilations are losing their touch with each newer one. The first was amazing, the second alright, and the third was not all aweful. It didn't seem to me that the tracks were mixed together as well as they were with the first cd, but that might just be me. Great price though.

This is more of a Goa/Psychedelic Trance compilation and one or more of the tracks sound like neither of those genres. But still a nice cheap buy, I'd definetly get 1 and 2 first though.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for studying to.......2005-09-10

This cd set, like the others in the ZYX catalog, are packaged as two cds in slimline cases, which is a good enough reason to buy them right there; they don't take up a lot of space. When I started buying these suckers they cost only $10 each, and I was so addicted to ZYX that I would actually consider buying their other titles even though I had no interest in a certain style of music. To me this stuff was like crack cocaine!

Now that I've had years to settle down and realize that this music isn't hard to find, like it was back in the day, I'm no longer having urges to purchase, purchase, purchase. I've decided to keep these cds not because they are anything spectacular, but because they are packaged well.

After the first listen I wondered about the composers; all the songs are so similar in their composition, so I looked them up. Most of the songs were written by the same handfull of people. I think if you do a little research you might find that some of these guys are still active in the scene, though mostly in Holland. Another option for ya newbies: Try iTunes or some similar Internet radio service, and check for "goa" in thier playlists.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Vol. 3.......2006-02-21

Personally i thought this was better than the third one. Even though this is more Psychedelic trance than goa trance (they're pretty much the same so that doesn't matter) it's still worth the very cheap price.

4 out of 5 stars Soulful!.......2001-11-13

This CD is a favorite of mine... It has a great flow to it, with some stellar tracks. I currently own Vols. 2,3 and 5, and two of my favorite tracks in the series (A Cool Wind is Blowing by Djivan Gasparyan and Lovelorn by Iky Levy) are on this CD. They are two of the most heart-wrenching, beautiful instrumentals I have ever heard.

I do massage to this CD and half the benefit of the massage is listening to this music!

Buy it!

4 out of 5 stars the other reviewer got the wrong CD, this is Trance Planet.......2001-11-03

My favorite of the excellent series. NOT DANCE MUSIC with the exception of track 1. NOT TRANCE TECHNO. This is primarily very mellow ambient style international music.

Produced by KCRW's Tom Schnabel, who brings us the nightly electronic/dance Cafe LA show, this series explores the mellow side of world music. A great starting point for those who are looking beyond Afropop and trendy beatbox treated international artists.

5 out of 5 stars Trance vol 3.......2000-04-18

I first heard this CD in Cancun at LA Boom. I could not stop dancing. The beats kept me dancing all night as the rythm put me into another world. If you are a rookie Tekno fan or an addict like me, I highly recomend picking this C.D. up.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation.......2001-01-31

As a huge fan of electronic music in general, it is generally difficult for me not to be satisfied with such music. This album, however, goes beyond minimal enjoyment. The song order works well to create a single flow, often difficult on albums compiling the work of multiple artists. I especially recommend tracks 2 and 8. This album works especially well in the car, but is also good just to vegetate to, as the music will definitely take you on a trip. My only complaint is that the songs remain separated. While I understand the logic of keeping the integrity of the artists' original work, I find that electronic compilation albums work better when the songs have been mixed together, creating a continuous song. This album is definitely worth buying.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good goa.......2007-06-27

This cd is great for the price and has some pretty good goa. Not as good as the first cd, but still worth the listen.

5 out of 5 stars Cheap Goa Trance.......2006-02-21

If you want a cheap Goa Trance album that's nothing special but still a great listen buy this, it's worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Good techno for a great price.......2001-01-18

I found this CD in a bargain bin, so I wasn't expecting to be blown away. I was in for a good surprise however, as most of the tracks on this double disc set are fairly good. It even features some of the better known trance/acid artists such as Astral Projection and Man With No Name. The fact that this is a 2 disc set is not a gimic either. Each CD is reasonably filled with 57 minutes non-stop music. It's not quite as good as other recent compilations of the same genre, but a it's a solid buy for the low price. If you like fast instrumental techno, you may want to check out The World Of Goa Trance Vol. 2.

5 out of 5 stars if you don beleive in aliens...........2000-04-09

if you dont beleive in aliens here is the proof that we are also aliens . this cd is so out of the human touch . all the tracks are so psychodelic that make you fall in 2 hours of pure trance. besides the price is excellent . every techno fan should owb this cd , if you dont have it get it and you ll be surprise of how far this underground music movement is going....

3 out of 5 stars Dubious tracklisting..........1999-12-26

I find it odd that the tracklisting here is *exactly the same* as it is for The World's Greatest Goa Collection. I haven't actually listened to this CD, but I know all the songs, so I can say something about it.

The collection is good; Solid Electronics (Astral Projection) is pretty much amazing. A lot of the other songs are good, too.

I'm guessing that the only difference between this collection is that the tracks here aren't mixed. If they are, there'd be essentially no difference between this and The World's Greatest... (which is mixed). So, if you like nonstop music, go get that; if you like your songs separate, buy this.
