Take a look at the running times:

Disc 1: 60 minutes
Disc 2: 50 minutes
Disc 3: 61 minutes
Disc 4: 58 minutes

What gives Silva? There is *MUCH* more John Williams in the silva screen back catalogue by the Prague Philharmonic than what is in this set, and thats not including their entire discs devoted to Star Wars Films, Indiana Jones Trilogy etc. Why isn't Hook "When You're Alone" included on Disc 2? There's room. Why isn't 1941 on Disc 1? There's room. Why isn't Earthquake on Disc 3? There's room. Why isn't Far and Away on disc 4? There's room. Where's the other ten minutes of the Rare Breed suite on disc 3? Why isn't Midway on disc 1? Where are the Land of the Giants, Time Tunnel and Lots In Space tv themes? Etc. Etc. Etc.

C'mon Silva, most of these 4 disc mega boxes released in the past few years are packed to the brim, but not this one, and with new recordings made after this was released (the terminal, munich, geisha, war of the worlds, star wars ep 3, harry potter 3), it only makes sense for a "re-do" in the next couple of years.

Further, with Silva releasing the 100 Greatest Film Themes on six discs in a couple of months, it's only a matter of time before we see the ultimate six disc john williams set.

This isn't a BAD set to own, but it could have been much better and when compared to the Jerry Goldsmith and John Barry sets in this same series, this one is a major letdown.

I listen to music all day with patients in my dental chair. This one is a winner with everyone. Patients always comment on how they recognize a song. Who doesn't love John Williams? His music transcends time.

This 4 cd pack is an anthology of all John Williams works. From his earlier works "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Jaws" right through "Indiana Jones" and the most recent"Star Wars" prequel movies are included. Williams work in thriller and horror are also included. If you are into soundtracks and love movie music this is an essential buy. The quality of the music is excellent. With ten or more tracks on each cd it's well worth the money.

This four CD set expands on the previously released John Williams Greatest Hits. It's a grand collection of nearly four hours of famous music scores from over forty years. There are many songs never before available in any collection. The short liner notes tell a great tale of musical movie history and include all of his numerous award nominations and wins. Each song (oddly enough) mentions the actors and the director, so fond are John Williams's memories of his work with these people. All of the conductors are mentioned along with specific orchestras, choirs, arrangement and orchestration specialists and even the publishers (contractual, I am sure). The only things missing are his early television scores, such as those for "Lost In Space" (by Johnny Williams back then). But with four discs, one has nothing to complain about and everything to enjoy!

I have been a huge fan of John Williams and I have known about his music for years. However, I never actually bought any of his music on CD. I was rather skeptical about purchasing this CD but when it arrived I knew I had made the right choice. The sound quality of the compilation is outstanding. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do a great job under the direction of Paul Bateman. The original London Symphony Orchestra CDs of John Williams' Star Wars Trilogy CDs are marginally better but this is still a great CD compilation. If you love ET, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Harry Potter, you will love this compilation soundtrack. Buy it, listen to these CDs in the car and enjoy every minute of the collection!!!

While director Steven Spielberg has sometimes termed his blockbuster hit E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial a loose sequel to his similarly themed Close Encounters of the Third Kind, that notion only underscores the breadth of John Williams's talents as a composer and tempts the listener to consider this score a sort of second, more nakedly emotional movement to his CE3K music. As in his epic Star Wars work, the musical touchstone is early-20th-century Russian romanticism, a link that becomes even clearer with the restoration of three fragile, largely atmospheric cues ("Main Titles," "Meeting E.T.," and "E.T.'s New Home"). While Williams has often suffered odd accusations of emotional manipulation--which is, after all, precisely the job of a film composer--his E.T. music is still some of his most compelling, recalling Herrmann's delicate, pastoral touch on The Magnificent Ambersons in its first half, then steadily ratcheting up the tension as the score's insistent brass motif intrudes ever more ominously. Two decades later, the 15-minute sweep of "Escape/Chase/Saying Goodbye" remains one of Williams's most powerful and memorable film-music achievements. Through watching this film I felt that the music made it what it is. I only just decided to listen to the soundtrack a few days ago and i think it is interesting and varied. I have to say that the older edition of the soundtrack is in my view the better, in comparison with the remastered version. I really have enjoyed listening to the soundtrack i feel that John williams captures the character of the film with just the right approach. Many people will know of this theme through the famed grandeur of the Flying scene. However my preferred tracks are the ones which have captured that relationship between E.T. and Elliot. When i listen to Track 16 E.T. is alive it always seems to make me emotional, I really adore the way that the melody of the strings glides. I also really enjoyed the end credits , mainly because of the piano solo, which i think its utterly amazing!

John Williams, the best composer of our generation (and a personal favorite), creates one of the greatest film scores ever. He won a well-deserved Academy Award for this magical feast for the ears. The beauty is that this score represents so many genres of film score, inlcuding adventure, romance, mystery, and many more. I would have to say that the last track in this Anniversary Edition, entiteled 'End Credits,' is by far one of John Williams' most emotional and moving pieces of music. The start of the track is of a piano, but the piano is played so perfectly well and is paced and toned more of a heartfelt tune. This is truly the best part of the track, and is a perfect ending for the magical film, directed by Steven Spielberg. It satisfies the audience. Then, Williams gives the tone of the "Flying Theme' of the film and brings us adventure and excitement, beautifully composed with violins and trumpets. E.T. The Extra Terrestrial is flawless, and John Williams at his best.

First of all, I always wondered why this recording, dating from 1981 - when digital recording was already possible - was being done with analogue machinery. Anyhow, one could (almost) not tell the age of the original recording when listening to this remastered version: so much more of orchestral detail has become apparent that could hardly be heard on the original LP, really opening up the sound-picture, with very little noticable tape hiss.
Firstly, some reflections concerning the film and the music. I must confess, that after seeing this movie as a child, my soul had been affected in ways which I cannot fathom. This may all sound pathetic, but it is true nonetheless. In certain ways, this tragic story of frienship and ultimate loss (we will all die ultimately, however strong the connections between befriended souls may be) 'changed' me as a person, from then on looking out into the world with a somewhat shifted focus. In a more intellectual kind of way I kind of detest this motion picture, with its (over-)emotional sentimentalities, so perfectly and grandiloquently translated into music by maestro Williams. But at the same time it resonates with the strings of the heart (mostly John Williams to blame?) and its deep truths cannot be ignored. The little boy in me screaming: why the hell could these two soulmates NOT be united! Why would these two friends have to be separated! Why did Steven Spielberg have to be so cruel! Well, because life is not so soothingly simple, and because in the end, we all have to go our separate destinies, while our hearts always ring out to the other, maybe only after passing the 'Big Doorway to Another World' being reunited in the light of 'Eternal Love' ;-)
Anyhow, the music in itself is pure, vintage Williams in its ability to weave veritable webs of orchestral colors and emotions. Indeed, where would ET be without John Williams! As Steven Spielberg himself once said: John Williams IS ET!
I personally feel no need to ever again watch the movie itself though (lodged as it already is in my memory), but I do regularly listen to some of the music, evoking for me all the necessary images, emotions and sensibilities from the film. John Williams to me remains maybe the greatest film music composer, and his music for ET remains one of my all time favorites (beside his music for Jurassic Park, which I consider to be even better).

This CD is great!!! The last 2 songs are two of the most beautifull i've ever hear, as a fan of JW i sure can tell you that the oscar was fair enough by chossing this soundtrack as the best...

E.T. is quite simply the best score of the eighties, or nineties, maybe it's still the best score.

Anyhow, this soundtrack will try it's hardest to move you emotionaly, and this will work every time you slide it in.

The soundtrack has many sides, dark, horror, mystery, excitement, love, childlike themes, and a grand ending theme that will blow you away.

The addition of Yoda's theme in track 13 was extremely clever.

John Williams has the magic of translating music from movies. Even not watching the movies themselves, you can still understand what's happening because of the music that comes with it.

I'm happy the music industry compiled this marvellous CD together. It has all the greatest hits like Luke and Leia, Indiana Jones march and the star wars main theme. These songs are really some of the great examples of Williams' finest.

Even if the music isn't really that clear in movies, it's still gives a great impact on the stories. If you watch a movie made up of only dialogues and fights, what's the thrill, we can see fights anytime anywhere. So the element that makes the movies really attractive and interesting is the music itself.

When I picked up this CD I was amazed. I am a big Williams fan and love the Boston Pops. All the pieces are well done and flawless (except for some small tempo issues in "1941") Though all the peices stand out the handsdown best is "The Cowboys" Overture. The ritch sound as well as the great musicmanship make this a joy to here. Another good highlight is the "Midway" March. Midway was a relitivley underated score being in the middle of "Jaws" and "Star Wars" (Both of witch are also on the CD but, Jaws could have had solid feeling but is otherwise performed rather great) The rousing March in my opinion is as rousing as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" or "Superman" (Both yet again are on the CD and Superman's opening is absolutly breathtaking even better than the actual soundtrack. The Trumpet and French Horn fanfare makes you yourself visualize the might of the man of steel himself. But the Midway march is given a stunning representaion with the ritch, lush sound of the Boston Pop's brass section. The CD also has some of John Williams music for the concert stage such as the well known Olympic Fanfare (1984 Los Angeles), The Liberty Fanfare as well as the Mission Theme (The NBC news anthem) all offer a nice break from the movie scores. The only down side to the CD is that because it was made in 1987 it doesn't have music from Hook, Far and Away, Schindler's List and of course Jurassic Park. But even though it lacks Williams' early 90's scores its always a Joy to listen to as well as a treat for the ears. So i give it two thumbs up and *****.
I advise any John Williams/Boston Pops fan not to let this gem slip through their fingers! ;)

John Williams ademas ser un compositor sin igual es un extraordinario director es asi como en conjunto con Los Boston Pops logra grabaciones espectaculares.
Entonces lo mejor de Williams a cargo de Williams junto con los POps es sorprendente, la obertura de "Cowboys" es grandiosa, Encuentros cercanos es fantastica, asi igual lo son la marcha para superman, Indiana Jones, de Darth Vader y la menos conocida para Midway. En resumen lo mejor de Williams en unas interpretaciones increibles, y nadie que se queje que no son las originales porque suenan incluso como la Sinfonica de Londres, y eso es mas de lo que uno espera. Grandioso.

For fans looking for a sampler of John Williams' music circa 1987, this CD is a treasure trove of selected movie and special occasion themes. While not as comprehensive as Sony Classical's Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collection, there is enough variety to satisfy even the most casual Williams fan. Included here among his famous themes (Star Wars, ET, Superman, and Raiders of the Lost Ark) are his 1984 Olympic Fanfare, "The Mission" (NBC News theme), and the rousing Overture to the John Wayne film The Cowboys. As always, the Boston Pops Orchestra shines under the baton of Hollywood's -- and America's -- favorite composer!

The Cardigans are incredibly creative, innovative, and completely fearless in making exactly the kind of album they want to make- a trait difficult to come by these days.

They are, in fact, so good that it's impossible to put into words how moving their music is, particularly with the release of Long Gone Before Daylight and Super Extra Gravity (each of which still give me shivers).

Everything about SEG is amazing- the music, the vocals, the lyrics, the power, the emotion, the rock and roll (!).

It kills me that The Cardigans have had to suffer the pop culture maiming they've received in America. People just don't know how much is out there by them, and that Lovefool is not the keystone of the kind of music they make. If you were ever interested in The Cardigans, I urge you to look into the band more deeply and check out what they have to offer.

Even though I love all the songs on SEG, I have to say that it took a bit more effort to fall into And Then You Kissed Me II and Losing A Friend, but now that I know the album, I have to say that it all dovetails wonderfully into three little song pockets.

The first four songs are banded together into something akin to a roller coaster ride. Losing A Friend starts slow, but climbs into a peak before Godspell "whiplashes you around and 'round" in the words of Nina.
Drip Drop Teardrop picks up at a lower velocity than Godspell, but leaves you feeling content and rounded-out with Overload.

The next little group gives you the perfect kind of musical high (and is my favorite segment), with Fine Wine (abridged title) being the perfect pick-up from Overload. It rocks, and to be quite honest, I think that after hearing that song, anyone would want to take commands from Nina Persson...
Enter the gorgeous downshift to Don't Blame Your Daughter (Diamonds), where Nina's voice takes on the sort of softness that one can only dream about hearing.
Ending on the gliding feeling of a warm crescendo, you're then swept into the rock-y ethereal heights with Little Black Cloud (her vibrato alone is worth the price of the album, as silly as that sounds).

The last little group of four gives you a nice comedown from LBC into In the Round, which some fans have actually denounced as not worth being on the album.
I think the song is worth its steady heartbeat because it is the perfect launch for Holy Love, which blasts off like a rocket and doesn't quit until you hit the end of Good Morning Joan- which is one of those songs that sounds completely effortless, but certainly does its share of the heavy lifting.
Then the quietly rolling And Then You Kissed Me II. The lyrics in this song are cruelly beautiful, and its small, compact, but potent phrases are bound to stick in your head.

You will not be disappointed to own this album, and if you are, then you aren't listening correctly.

I first heard songs from Life when I lived in Japan in the mid-90's. It was so wierd to hear "Carnival" when the music that was popular back then was the end of Grunge and the beginning of the ska wave that lead into pop-punk and this other nonsense that it popular now. This was an album that was so light and airy and upbeat, and fun, with no pretension of being something that it was not. And yet it was super innovative, because nobody else was making music that sounded anything like this. I was of course instantly hooked.

Needeless to say, I am willing to give the Cardigans a chance every single time they release an album. Their albums represent an evolution away from what made them popular. "Gran Turismo" was a radical departure, and I dug that. "Long Gone Before Daylight" was really pretty bad, in my opinion. I felt catatonic listening to it. I was pretty disappointed. But, you know, one cannot stay away from something like the Cardigans, and when I heard they released a new record, I was all over it.

"Super Extra Gravity" (should have been the title of the last album) is a great rock and roll album. This record would have fit in with the sound of the mid-90's when they were making lounge music. It is reminicent of the best of the Breeders or Veruca Salt, though, of course, the musicians in the Cardigans are much more talented than those mid-90's bands.

The album is a rollercoaster ride, with a good ballance of more upbeat tunes, and slower, darker tunes. The guitar work is great, and the production is polished. But there are some suprises in the structures of the songs themselves. What one expects from a song like "Holy Love" is altered by the last chorus, as the Cardigans experiment with range and dissonance. It's not too far out (in a way that the Sonic Youth were far out) but it just enough to add a new dimension of interest to the song.

The draw for most to the Cardigans is the voice of the singer, Nina Persson. Long gone are the delicate tones of sticky sweetness that she is originally famous for. On this record she gains some gravel, and many times sings not beyond her range, but at the very edges of it. It underscores the rock element of the record to the nth degree.

All in all great production values, innovative stylings, and a relatively coherent set list makes this album a really great listen, very enjoyable for playing while you are engaged in some activity. Enjoy it with a friend. "Super Extra Gravity" is a very impressive record from one of my favorite bands.

The Cardigans are my favorite band, and considering the quantity of music I listen to, that's a heavy compliment. I got hooked when I happened hear their "My Favorite Game" in the intro to Gran Turismo. I'm one of the fans, however, that prefers their later albums to their earlier work. Up until Super Extra Gravity, my favorite album was Long Gone Before Daylight, and I also found myself listening to Gran Turismo a good deal. I also like First Band on the Moon and Life, but not only do I prefer their later style- I think they've become more inventive and expressive especially in their last 2-3 albums.

Either way, the lead singer, Nina Persson, has a truly unique, emotive voice and all of their albums have that listenable quality where one songs manages to sound different from the next.

I had high expectations for Super Extra Gravity, and they were met. People are right to say that every Cardigans album sounds different, but with Nina's voice as a constant, this variability is a strength. Super Extra Gravity is rougher and rockier than LGBD, but I like it just as much. I especially like "Don't Blame Your Daughter" and "I Need Some Fine Wine...And You Need To Be Nicer", and "And Then You Kissed Me II". The entire album, however, is fantastic, clever, and holds some nice surprises for Cardigans fans, especially.

For new listeners, I recommend starting at Gran Turismo- it's very accessible, and I dare say that if you don't like that album, you aren't going to like the Cardigans. Go back to their earlier albums only once you're addicted to Nina Persson's voice (shouldn't take long). It's also worthy to note that Nina Persson released a great solo album under the title "A Camp"- not to be missed.

Every one of the Cardigans' albums is quite unique, so if you are looking for a part 2 of a previous album, this is not it. This is by far my favorite of their albums. People tend to call them pop, but this is not your vanilla radio pop, folks.

Nina Perrson has one of the most beautiful voices in music. With her, it's not the range, but the tone. It is unique and pure.

This album does not contain a single consistency like the others do. Many of the songs are edgy and fierce, some are bouncy, and others are slow and dreamlike. Most are moving and enjoyable. The only songs I did not take to were Good Morning Joan and In the Round. Favorites are Godspell and I Need Some Fine Wine...

If you are new to the Cardigans, I think this is a great album to start with. It is very accessible and not as solemn or quirky as their others (which are also great). I completely recommend this album, I doubt you will feel like you wasted your money but just to be safe, I always say to listen to a sample first.
I hope this album gets its due credit; the Cardigans are way underrated.

Super Extra Gravity is a great rock 'n roll album. I was so enamored by their melancholic, lush, previous album "Long Gone Before Daylight" that I had to get this album as soon as it came out in Europe. This album rather cleverly contains a sequel to the song "And Then You Kissed Me." I definitely enjoy the songs on this album. But because the songs are so intense and rock-based, I wouldn't say the album as a full listen through is entirely enjoyable. My favorite songs off this album are probably In the Round and Overload.

There is a powerful-sounding song called Godspell, which is a song about religion being an opiate for the masses, but after listening to the lyrics, I came to the conclusion that they are rather nonsensical and the message sounds more whiny than astute.

The album is decidedly brash and brave and each song has a unique sound, but I miss the vulnerability of Long Gone Before Daylight. I thought it deserved 4 stars, because I am not usually a person who likes harsher sounding rock 'n roll, and this album was more enjoyable for me than most would be in that genre. Not all of the songs are rock per se, but the album does have an edgy rock feeling throughout.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

This collection of movie themes, will allow you to relive the chilling experiences from practically all (4 CDs)of the great movies. Great movies would not be great without great music. The Cincinnati Pop with Eric Kunzel are unbeatable recordings. Every minute is more beautiful and inspiring to the next. If you love Pops music, this is the begin all, end all.

Another generally forgotten album from the usual reviewers to George's post Beatle releases, but very mistakingly so because there are some classic songs here that I appreciate based on their own merit. From the 1st song You to This Guitar and Ooh Baby finishing off with His Name Is Legs, from 1975 these tunes show George had songwriting skills from way back that were just always overshadowed and always will be by Lennon/McCartney.This review is worth an easy 4 stars!

As usual Theres no surprise, this album was a known winner before I got it. and it lived up to my expectations. I don't believe Harrison has ever made an album that wasn't fantastic.

George Harrison had incredible talents that inspired the world. He was not only a member of the Beatles but he was also one of the writers. In his solo career he sang along side of Bob Dylan and other greats in the "Concert for Bangladesh".

. . . So just what happened?

How did this man who soared with the eagles suddenly take a nose dive and swim in the turkey droppings? How could such a winner like George Harrison create such a loser of a solo album?

My guess, maybe, it was his divorce with Patti Boyd at the time. Perhaps it may have been because of his laryngitis, but that had already healed after he made his "Dark Horse" album. But whatever the reason, his other albums take off to the skies while this one crashes into a tree. Harrison plagiarizes his own material with "This Guitar Can't Keep From Crying" which is pitiful excuse for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". If you have a small child that cannot go to sleep, just play him this song at night and the problem will be solved.

The best song this album is "You" which is horribly mediocre but the only one that is not boring. The song "His Name is Legs" could have been a good hard rock song except that it was too repetitious and you would still get bored after the first half. The rest of the album is a giant sleeping pill.

No need for over the counter insomnia medicine! Play this record before you go to bed and have a great night's sleep!

I have a lot of criticism of this album but I'll just mention what I feel is important.

I think the main reason I don't like the album is because George buries his voice underneath layers of orchestration on this album. Production wise, this album makes overproduced efforts like 'All things must pass' and even Ringo Starr's 'Ringo the fourth' look like 'Plastic Ono Band' by comparison. I don't think Overproduction is necessarily a bad thing, but you should be able to hear the vocalist easily. Perhaps Harrison was paying too much attention to his critics and the comments about his voice on the last album 'Dark Horse'. Not only that, his critically acclaimed masterpiece 'All things must pass' was a very riff driven album. The critically dissed 'Living in the material world' was not a riff driven album. So on Dark Horse and Extra Texture Harrison tries to make the songs more riff driven. However, I think sometimes he tends to be repetitous, but that's just my view.

I find most of the songs fairly enjoyable, and some of the songs show his knack for writing great melodies, but overall there are not the same kind of melodies displayed here as usual, in my opinion, and music is a matter of opinion. Going by other reviews, some people think it's great, some think it's bad and a few think it's a masterpiece. Try to hear sample before you buy.

In points of praise, I think 'You' is a terrific pop song. Other highlights for me were 'Grey Cloudy lies' where George experiments with synthesisers and that song has a very unique melody. 'Can't stop thinking about you' is a beautiful ballad that has the same kind of charm as the fadeout to 'Gave it all up'. This guitar can't keep from crying is alright, and they are the only songs I like personally.

There are all the standard trip-hop ingredients--two guys who could probably stand to get out of the studio a little more often, lots of keyboards, drum machines, and samples. And there's a female singer, who's been compared to Sade--rather unfairly, since Ruth-Ann can manage more than a monotone and still be sultry. But there's also guitar and--wait for it--real strings. And, um, songs. Granted, they're not your conventional verse-chorus-verse, but like an insect bite, they get under your skin until you're scratching away and can't ignore them. --Chris Nickson

If you like Trance, New Age, Electronica or Trip Hop. You'd be stupid not to buy this! You can also catch the lead singer Ruth Ann Boyle on Enigma's Mask and Mirror CD. She just released a solo debut album exclusively sold on itunes as well. Give good talent your support. Buy it!

Olive is one of those bands who should be more widely known than they are. I purchased this album last year, and it's a perfect album to listen to if you're stressed out and want to chill and read a book or something. I find myself never getting bored of listening to Ruth-Ann's cool voice. This is one of the best trip-hop albums out there. The lyrics are simple but with simplicity there is a lot to say. I like all their songs but my two favorites would be "MIRACLE" and "YOU ARE NOTHING".

Take a little "Sade" a bit of "Morcheeba" some "Spicehouse" and a dash of "Frou Frou" mix it up and out comes "Olive". This is a great CD. Lots of soul and good songs, and a nice voice to top it off. This is a great collection of trip hop. "Trickle" is great too, but i'd check out this album first, the best song on this album is undoubtedly "Miracle".This a very talented group. Very instrumental, and very hypnotic, this album is great for anyone who likes relaxing music.

I love this album. LOVE IT! Even after 8 years of ownership, it still manages to regularly find its way into my stereo or, now, onto my iPod. It just has a certain quality that wins me over time and time again. Kind of trip-hop-lite, it is somehow breezy, moody, and ethereal all at the same time, completely compelling and satisfying. Ruth Ann's vocal are beautiful, whether they are dipping below and floating above the music accompanying them. Vocal heavy, and hook rich, this one is a great trip.

Most people are familiar with Olive, and with this particular album, whether or not they know it, thanks primarily to the song "You're Not Along" which gained moderate airplay and mainstream exposure back n 1997/1998. This album, though, is so much more than that one song. While I love "You're Not Alone", it actually isn't one of my favorites here. Check out "This Time", "Safer Hands", "Outlaw", "You Are Nothing", and my personal favorite on this album, "I Don't Think So". Love the cracking whip sound that the music has in that song.

This album is a classic. Pick it up along with Olive's sophomore effort, "Trickle", which is even better than this one, if you can believe it.

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Unlike those other members of her family, Janet Jackson's albums are still worth waiting for. The best parts of All for You, her first disc since 1997's The Velvet Rope, continue to display the first-class pop-R&B talent who broke through decisively in the mid-'80s with "What Have You Done for Me Lately" and "Nasty." Jackson's longtime cohorts Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis are of course on board, and the production-writing trio demonstrates its mastery of everything from dirty funk ("You Ain't Right") to peppy, radio-perfect ("Come on Get Up" and 2000's No. 1 "Doesn't Really Matter") and hypnotically undulating sounds ("When We Oooo"). While much of All for You is irresistible, its handful of failures are poorly conceived and executed. Most glaring among these is "Son of a Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You)," an unlistenable sequel to Rope's "Got 'Til It's Gone" that substitutes one self-regarding singer-songwriter diva (Carly Simon) for another (Joni Mitchell), thereby wrecking Simon's one golden moment, "You're So Vain." "Son of a Gun" and "Truth" apparently target estranged husband Rene Elizondo, but Jackson is hardly as convincing a revenge artist as she is a sex kitten. In fact, the likes of "Love Scene (Ooh Baby)" and "Would You Mind" out-spice even the carnally obsessed Velvet Rope and Janet. --Rickey Wright

Although Velvet Rope is one of the best records to have ever been released by janet, she was criticized for being too dark and mellow in her music so she went back to making happy dance music on this CD. Some of the tracks are definitely well done, while others are just fillers. I guess if you listen to velvet rope and all for you back to back, you hear the transition of a woman overcoming depression and learning to have fun while still dealing with personal issues.

Even though I've stated that Janet Jackson is my favorite singer, I've become disgusted with the mediocrity of her more recent output after having my subconscious indelibly stamped with the greatness of her late 80s/early 90s albums. None of her albums are completely disposable, but there's not a lot to recommend this one, either. "Doesn't Really Matter" and "Come On Get Up" are plausible efforts, but the rest is pretty tepid, especially the embarrassingly bad "Someone To Call My Lover" which is a good way to make pop purists angry with its blatant rip-off of the America classic "Ventura Highway".

Although the mainstream failed to recognize it, "The Velvet Rope" was another tremendous and impressive notch in Janet Jackson's career. Many longtime fans felt somewhat underwhelmed by its more low-key production and many critics failed to look beyond the sexual nature of some the album's songs, while those that did, argued that the album's honesty and naked emotion felt contrived. Whatever the case, Janet Jackson obviously needed to take several years to examine what gave her life meaning before making another album. "All for You" is the sound of a woman who has found fulfillment, albeit, through a painful divorce. In early 2001, Janet released what is arguably one of her most lighthearted singles, the album's title track. Although it seemed effortless on her part, it revived people's interest in her again and proved that Janet and her all-star producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, hadn't run out of tricks yet. This was perceived by many to be Ms. Jackson's comeback, and when "All for You" landed the third highest album debut of all time for a female artist, many were convinced that Janet was back. Unfortunately, the rest of the album does not quite live up to the promise of the first single. Songs like "Come on Get Up", "Someone to Call My Lover", "Feels So Right", and "Doesn't Really Matter" are all bona fide hits, and experimental tracks like "Trust a Try", "Truth", "You Ain't Right", and "Better Days" are ambitious and dynamic. These songs show growth and identity and indicate that Janet still had plenty of innovative ideas and topics to sing about 15 years deep into her legacy. But the album is poorly organized, which puts greater focus on its downsides. Placing four long, tedious sex ballads one after the other was a bad decision, and whoever decided to let Carly Simon ramble about clouds in her rap on "Son of a Gun" should be fired. Though Janet obviously felt enthusiastic about this record, she could have spared us the gratuitous interludes too (particularly the one of her impersonating Fran Drescher). Ultimately though, Janet's heart shines through on this album, making you feel uplifted and cheerful by the album's end. It leaves you wondering how she manages to pull off something entirely new and well-rounded each album around. Regrettably, the follow-up to this record, "Damita Jo," proved to be the beginning of the end in Janet's once extraordinary career.

Also I feel that alot of work was placed in making the cd, and if I had the opportunity to tell Janet Jackson in person that her All for you CD really rocks I would.My favorite tracks on the CD are All for you,come on get up,son of a gun,someone to call my lover,and bonus track son of a gun.
