Great movie, better soundtrack.......2007-05-19

I just recently saw this movie and the only thing I could think about afterwards was that I had to get this soundtrack. I'm not usually a big fan of movie soundtracks, but this cd is unlike any other out there, soundtrack or not. The use of strings and carnaval type instruments is completely unique and makes this a must by for any fan of music.

great collection of unusual music.......2007-05-07

Rented the movie on reccomendation from Netflix, it was pretty good. But the music was the star of the show. The soundtrack follows the course of the movie pretty closely, it's kind of like listening to the movie. Each track brings to mind a specific scene in the movie. One of the highlights is the ecclectic treatment of Burt Bacharach's "Close to You". Most will remember the super-sweet Carpenter's version, but this interpretation was the main reason I bought the music. Unusual augmented chord progressions and almost minimalist format (complete with the mechanical background sounds made by the female jack-in-the-box-like, life-sized, mostly metal toy dressers) make the tune as captivating as in the movie when they 'convert' the trapped Helena into the black princess. Great music to play while relaxing, too.

This soundtrack is truly a delight to listen to. It ranges from quirky circus music to deep and melodic mysterious tunes. It is a great CD to relax to and to use as background music for most any relaxing time hanging out with friends.

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

Another opinion.......2006-06-14

I absolutely love Deva Premal's voice and CDs. This was a huge disappointment for me. I don't like almost everything on this CD. There's nothing remarkable about Miten's voice, even though it's certainly nice to listen to. His lyrics are banal. Sweet and heartfelt, but hackneyed.
There's nothing really bad about the music, but most of it is Miten by himself (the ones with Deva are far better, to my ear), and I honestly can't find anything to recommend it.
I only gave it two stars for the few songs that are predominantly Deva's voice.
As much as I am dissing this CD I wouldn't hesitate to recommend "Love is Space." So, if you're expecting something along those lines, don't get this as it's totally different.

My girlfriend introduced this cd to me, and I have to say, I'm almost as much in love with this music as I am with her :) !!! It's a 'must have' for any couples who are truly committed to growing healthy partnerships of love. It celebrates the beauty that is at the heart of each one of us and gives such wonderful reverential acknowledgment to the divinity in all.
We've already decided that this will be the music we will choose for our wedding as we shared our first dance to the magnificent sentiments expressed in song by Miten and Deva Premal.
You won't be disappointed!!!!

This is a CD made with love. Seriously, you can smell love. What does love smell like? I don't know. So stop asking. I honestly don't see how they can do it. Its magic. When I listen to this CD I feel like I am being held. I am not a lonely person. Believe me when I tell you, I am not. OK. Maybe sometimes.

I can't get enough of 'Tanya'!.......2006-10-31

'Tanya', the first number on this excellent album, runs for 18 minutes. I first heard this tune whilst watching Ken Burn's "Jazz" documentary. It has stuck in my head since then; I simply adore it.

Tanya was written by hard bop trumpeter Donald Byrd, who accompanies Dexter in this performance. They play together to begin with and then each solos through this mesmerizing and hypnotic tune. The splendour of the trumpet and tenor saxophone as instruments is on full display here.

Let's not forget the album includes some of Dexters favourites in the Rhythm section; Kenny Drew on Piano, Art Taylor on Drums and Neils-Hennig Orsted Pedersen on Bass.

An excellent album as whole, or to listen to 'Tanya' alone.

My God, that classic, classic bassline to Tanya still resonates in my soul today, these many years later. As well, Dex's blowing on "Darn That Dream" still gets me all emotional and teary to this day.

What happens when you combine one of the greatest ever jazz tenormen along with the most underrated trumpeter this side of Miles ? Pure and utter magic.

Transcendent heights.......2005-09-04

Stop! Time! Enough! Moratorium! That's what I've been telling myself since CD's started becoming as much of a space and storage problem in my digs as LP's. I don't need another Sonny Stitt record, or for that matter another Van Gelder-engineered Blue Note date. I'm going to sell them on Ebay and donate the proceeds to the Red Cross.

But then I picked up yet another recording by the master storyteller of them all, Mr. Long Tall. This time he's not only one flight above every other musical narrator on the planet: he's delivering his soul-stirring message from Mt. Sinai. Doesn't matter which of the four tracks you single out: Dexter is equally inspired on each, spinning out stories that proceed from one climax to the next, "nailing" you with each carefully aimed musical word. His rhetoric is so compelling it doesn't matter if you recognize all of his serendipitous quotes: they become part of the total fabric of his sermon.

Although this album has acquired a semi-cult following because of Dexter's marathon solo on "Tanya" (hear Kurt Elling's equally amazing transcription on "The Messenger"), his contructions on the alternate harmonies of "Darn That Dream" are no less impressive. And if you need further evidence of Dexter's command, "King Neptune" provides that and more--bassist Nils Orsted Pederson and drummer Art Taylor following the Tower of Power with the hardest swinging sounds on the date.

I only pity a Donald Byrd, a Kenny Drew, or any instrumentalist that has to follow L.T. On the other hand, in air this rarefied it doesn't hurt to have a chance to catch your breath.

"One Flight Up" One Step Down.......2004-09-14

Within the past year, Blue Note has reissued a number of classic Dexter Gordon albums via its RVG series including "Doin' Allright," "Dexter Calling" and "Our Man in Paris" (see my reviews). EMI continues this trend with this CD, a remastered version of "One Flight Up." Originally recorded in Paris, Dex's June 2, 1964 effort was made, not under the watchful eye of Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder, but instead by business partner Francis Wolff. It features the great tenor saxophonist in a quintet setting with trumpeter Donald Byrd, pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen, and drummer Art Taylor. The album's centerpieces are two extended compositions, Donald Byrd's "Tanya" and Kenny Drew's "Coppin' The Haven," both of which are, in my opinion, an attempt to follow-up on the success of Herbie Hancock's "Takin' Off," where Dex put in a rare appearance as a sideman. It is a combination that is enjoyable, but the second time around it doesn't seem altogether tailor-made for Dex's sound, particularly now that he is in the leadership role. In fact, he seems more himself on the standard "Darn That Dream" and his own "Kong Neptune," a bonus track not included on the original LP (but featured on the first CD incarnation of this album). One wonders if Lion didn't feel the same way, as the following year he brought Gordon back to the States to record his next Blue Note sessions, "Gettin' Around" and what would eventually be released as "Clubhouse." In all, "One Flight Up" is a perfectly good jazz disc, but it is definitely one step down from the likes of "A Swingin' Affair" and "Go."

With a cd collection in excess of 3500, this is one of the Top 5 CD's I would save in the event of a fire!!! This is a definite Desert Island Disc. I can't think of another cd so filled with emotion. It's almost impossible to NOT be able to relate to this cd in some way. I only wish Linda was doing her own recording instead of producing (which she is EXCELLENT at). I long to be moved by another CD like this. If you like melancholic, ethereal, moody music, this is a FANTASTIC cd. This CD by Linda Perry was sorely underappreciated!! Hit EBAY. ASAP...try and snag yourself a copy of this truely AWESOME cd.

One non blonde........2003-12-09

Like probably everyone, I first heard "Linda Perry" in the group "4 Non Blondes", and while that bands only album was more pop-rock, this one is just as good. It's a little more singer-songwriter, giving attention to the music, as much as the singing. I like every song on here, even "Fruitloop Daydream", but the better ones are "Success", "Fill Me Up", and "Too Deep". This might be her only album, being that now she devotes her time to writing and producing. Maybe if she sang more on "Pink's" albums, those would be good too.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In Linda Perry's case, it's all in the ear. As an artist, she has an exceptional voice--powerful, strong, emotive, and unbelievably beautiful. It's wonderful to hear a voice like hers--strong. Her's is the double, triple, quadruple antithesis of Britney Spears who has a weak, vulgar sounding, fingers-on-a-chalkboard voice.

As a songwriter and strictly as such, Linda Perry and her cd, "In Flight," are worth 5 stars. As entertainment, "In Flight" is really only worth a 2 or 3. It's slow. Dark. Brooding. The cd is the type songwriters make when they have something to say. Some would even call it the type of cd made to satisfy the artist's ego. It would have been great if all the reviewers of "In Flight" had mentioned the slow-tempo of each and EVERY song on this cd. It might have steered me away from buying it. Don't get me wrong, this cd is worth owning on some levels, especially, if you are a music collector or a fan of Ms. Perry's. But, for the need and wanting to be entertained, buy something else. Don't waste your hard-earned money on a cd that is slow-tempoed, dark in sound, and where the songwriter truly writes what is on her mind and in her heart and soul.

Exploring the human psyche is important for personal growth. But, sometimes, I don't particularly want to hear about another's growing pains. I have enough of my own to transcend in this life. Sometimes all I want is to have a good beat to tap my foot and whacky lyrics to yell out at the top of my voice.

soulful and inspiring.......2003-03-13

being a fan of four non blondes and a fan of linda perry, in general. i did some checking and found she has some solo work. i picked this up and (like everyone else) it seems) was taken aback by how good this cd is. linda perry exerts power and emotion and knows enough to let the music do the talking at times instead of her voice.
there is a mixture of styles, musically, on this cd. it is a pretty mellow cd but still blasts with emotion. grace slick makes a guest appeareance and the vocal harmony linda and grace have is amazing. also guesting is lisa germano. she plays violin and adds such dimesnion to this great piece of art.
it is not surprising to see why linda is the mastermind behind pink and christina aguliara'a second album. if you read credits, you will see linda wrote christian's song beautiful and helped all around. read the credits on pink's misundaztood album. linda had a hand there too.

If you liked Gypsy Fusion, you'll like this........2001-01-24

I love both CDs. I loved Gypsy Fusion enough that I was excited to see this one come out, although I feared it wouldn't be as good as the first one. I'm happy to say my fears were unfounded. This one is just as much fun to listen to. Sure, call it flamenco-pop if you want to, but it's still a blast.

Even more repetitive than their first CD..........2000-07-10

NovaMenco has a couple of really hot flamenco riffs, and they play them to death. This music on this CD is so repetitive that it becomes as annoying as a record player needle stuck in a groove.

Yes...this is very enjoyable material!

BUT--with this and Jeff Pearce and others...it's as if NONE of you have ever heard Pink Floyd's DARK SIDE OF THE MOON!! It seems as if everyone is "astounded" that there is a use for the pedal steel "other than country or perhaps soundtracks" out there! Has David Gilmore's masterful use and playing of it on that and other Pink Floyd work been forgotten THAT easily?!? YES...it wasn't the "primary" instument, but it's inclusion and useage and tone individualized and created with and for it are extraordinary and ground-breaking!

Wake up and smell the coffee brewing...oh ambient fanciers! :-)

If you've never heard 'Clouds', you're in for a treat. I stumbled upon this song on my cable station's Soundscapes channel, and fell in love with it the first time I heard it. Bruce's music is pure magic. I never knew the pedal steel guitar could produce such a full and sensuous sound until I heard this album. He is a master of the pedal steel guitar.

Like a true pioneer, Bruce takes you down several paths, ranging from a couple of eastern-style tracks, to more traditional 'new-age' compositions. Not to leave country & western totally ignored, his 'High Desert' explores the lost art of western music. 'Outpost' conveys a sense of loneliness and isolation that its name implies.

Country & Eastern And All That Stuff.......2006-03-04

When Bruce Kaphan's "Slider" came out in 2000, as one of the last official releases on the Hearts Of Space label, it made quite a splash-besides the English pedal steel player B.J. Cole and the equally obscure but still immensely talented Chas Smith, not much ambient/space music had been heard from the steel guitar as a source instrument.

"Slider" changed that in a big way: The track "Country & Eastern" substituted a slide guitar where a sitar or esraj might have been; "Clouds" and "Big Brain Small Brain" went off into Jeff Pearce/Michael Brook "infinite guitar" territory, but using the slide as opposed to a heavily processed six string or e-bow. Six years later, "Slider" sounds just as fresh. This is an essential purchase.

Modern music fans recognize Bruce Kaphan's name from his work with American Music Club, Chris Isaak, REM, Black Crowes, John Lee Hooker and David Byrne. It's a rare treat to get an instrumental album from such an accomplished sideman. This collection of instrumental "new age" music was originally recorded for the prestigious Hearts Of Space label, and its tone is consistent with the sound of their popular radio show.

The tunes are dreamy, multi-layered steel tracks, dripping with echoes and punctuated with diamond edges. Bruce Kaphan combines his double-neck pedal steel, the recording studio, and a few tasty acoustic instruments to create beautiful ambient tapestries. This CD is on the leading edge of steel guitar art music. It's one of my personal favorites.
