4 out of 5 stars Hartman.......2007-02-28

The real reason to get this cd and the follow up cd is to get the tracks of Johnny Hartman. I've also been trying to find tracks w/ the underrated guitarist Al Gafa; he backs Hartman on some of these tracks -- a real find. Any jazz junkie should attempt to score these two cds.

5 out of 5 stars Johnny Hartman - the gold in the dross.......2007-02-26

The best thing about Clint Eastwood's 1995 tearjerker, "The Bridges of Madison County," is the soundtrack. Although most of the album (other than Eastwood's syrupy "Doe Eyes" which appears twice on the disk) is listenable, it's the recordings of Johnny Hartman that make this disk indispensable. Hartman, who has to be considered on the short list of the greatest male vocalists of all time, recorded the material heard here for the now out-of-print album, "Once in Every Life," on the Bee Hive label in 1980, three years before his untimely death at age 60. The album, a late masterpiece surpassed only by his 1963 collaboration with John Coltrane, has never been released on CD but Eastwood has done us all a huge service by releasing the entire content of the album spread out over two disks (this one and its sequel "Remembering Madison County"). Hartman's voice, a smoky baritone, is perfectly suited to the mature romantic ballads he performs here with a very complementary sextet. Hartman recorded some of the tracks, notably "I See Your Face Before Me," earlier in the mid 50s also. On the soundtrack he sings the song at a slower tempo, shading it with nuances earned over the many years he had lived with the lyrics. His renditions of the aforementioned song, "It Was Almost Like a Song" and "For All We Know" may well be the definitive versions.

This is an essential purchase for anyone who loves male jazz vocals.

This CD is filled with many warm memories of a great movie and a great time. There are no weaknesses in this collection of songs;just pure pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars The Bridges of Madison County.......2006-08-24

My husband and I have watched this movie over and over and we have listen to the music driving along and I'll turn to him and say "RRRRObert....you wanna F_ _ _ on the linoleum one more time" We just laugh..If you seen the movie as much as we have you will understand. Great cd. It definatly sets a mood you cannot, nor ,want to escape. Pour a brandy, sit close and the music will do the rest.

5 out of 5 stars all time favourite album - but put it in the vault !.......2006-01-25

I bought this album after seeing the movie( what 10 yrs ago?) We were only 30 at the time and still listening to Inxs and George Michael etc... so had never even heard of Johnny Hartman!!) Well 10 years and 3 kids later we are completely addicted to this album. My husband knows that if this is on when he gets home it will be in a very nice evening indeed.About two years ago we lost this cd - probably on a weekend away - and spent another year trying to replace it. There wasnt a single music store in Australia that had a new or second hand copy in stock. Where did they all go ?? I ended up ordering it from the U.K. - it took 3 months and cost $30 ( approx $50 us). Needless to say we have several copies of it now and continue to play it constantly. We now own various Hartman/Washington albums but the mix on this album ( plus we are big fans of Clint's) just seems to be perfect. Sublime.

    Album Description

Famed guitarist James Burton and storied pedal-steel man Ralph Mooney were first-call session men for a staggering array of stellar artists, including Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, and many others. Burton's jaw-dropping Telecaster had given Ricky Nelson's early hits their rockabilly zest, and Mooney's ethereal pedal-steel was a staple in countless country sessions. Since the duo's sound was so easy to spot, Burton and Mooney were urged to cut an album's worth of originals and instrumental covers of country hits in late '66—and here they are in all their inimitable glory: corn pickin' and slick slidin' together like nobody's business!

    5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Addition.......2006-03-22

A lot of times, you only get to hear musicians such as Ralph Mooney and James Burton, when they did session work for somebody's album. Here, you get to hear them uninterrupted by the singer. This allows the listener to really hear how talented these two individuals were/are. There are plenty of licks on this CD to keep anyone busy for awhile. Not to mention that this is a unique CD to have in a collection.

5 out of 5 stars Two instrumental country greats.......2005-09-29

This is a great snapshot of late-'60s country, especially the "Bakersfield" sound created by Burton, Buck Owens and carried on today by Dwight Yoakum. No fancy strings or choirs here, just straight ahead Telecaster pickin' by Burton and cryin' steel guitar by Mooney. This is the way country music is supposed to sound, my friends. Completely the opposite of what you hear on country radio, today.

My favorite track on the disc is "Corn Pickin'", but they are all great and are the perfect showcase for this duo's talent. I wish country today sounded like this. If you like no B.S., bare bones country, give this disc a try.

5 out of 5 stars Ground Zero for The Bakersfield Sound of the 60's.......2005-03-27

This album was my bible for tele playing. Both Ralph and James were the rulers of the tele and steel, as far as I was concerned. Nobody played like them..nobody!
Recorded at the Capitol Records Tower in the mid 60's, this album, while perhaps sounding corny to some, laid down a true blueprint for west coast country playing.
Burton's dobro (both fretted and with slide) transends good taste and originality, while Ralphs one-of-a-kind steel guitar weaves its way around the great selection of songs.
James and Ralph helped establish a sound that put LA on the map as a true contender for west coast country music hit recording. These guys were simply the best at their ax..and this album captures then in their prime. I highly reccomend this CD. It sits on my studio shelf as a reminder of it's influence on my playing.

4 out of 5 stars Dodge the Snobs, THIS IS A GREAT ALBUM.......2006-02-02

Firstly, if I hear another uninformed poseur talk about how this second album of theirs let them down, and oh, dear me, they changed their sound... After People Get Ready, then Electric Sweat, Live & Amplified is their third full length LP, and their fourth release if you include the Self Titled EP.

I don't care about the so-called change in their sound- I got into Suzuki with the, Your Love is a Gentle Whip, single. On that early release their garage sound was completely mechanical, and devoid of the blues/funk that they've evolved into today. They have changed/evolved with each album. Most good bands do.

This is a solid album. It would be a solid first album, and it is a solid third album. Their sound evolved and matured, and I hope it continues to. Yes, it was produced by the Matrix. Did that effect the sound. The producer always does. Primitive Condition, Alive & Amplified and Shake That Bush Again are all really great songs. I hope they made a few bucks licensing the title track to, appropriately enough, Suzuki for the Grand Vitara TV spot where the guy parachutes off the red-rock down to his SUV... You've heard it a dozen times, that's the song.

    5 out of 5 stars Alive!.......2005-08-07

A highly anticipated new release from New York garage rockers Mooney Suzuki thrills with peices like the funky, energetic title track, which boasts of drums reminiscent of "Sympathy For The Devil", vocals that sound like the twisted offspring of Ozzy Ozbourne and Jimi Hendrix, as well as with the opening track, "Primitive Condition", which starts with a guitar riff that could easilybe on an AC/DC album. Luckily the sophisticated yet poppy lyrics spare the need to compare the two.

    4 out of 5 stars Funkified!.......2005-05-26

I picked this up for free from the record store I work at, not really expecting much but hoping that it was good. And, I was pleasantly surprised! This album provides some damn good hip-shaking funk and deep sexy soul.

The first song is just naughty enough to make me smile, while the title track "Alive & Amplified" is a big energy romp through the highs of life.

I won't go into much detail after that, it's sort of something you need to experience for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars not great, not bad.......2005-04-15

This is a good album, sure it could've been way better if it was recorded with the same production of Electric Sweat with the buzzing guitars and all, but this is not a bad album. Garage rock? nawwww, but good ol' rock n roll? h311s yes.

5 out of 5 stars The Bottom Line.......2004-07-11

From the distorted guitar start of "People Get Ready" to its soulful finish, the Mooney Suzuki proves beyond the shadow of doubt that great American rock still exists. What this album lacks in depth in more than makes up for with attitude. This is roots rock the way it was originally created. After giving this one a listen you can list about 100 bands that they remind you of, yet borrow absolutely nothing. The Mooney Suzuki have a very distinct sound in a somewhat cloned genre. I believe most reviewers are a little too liberal with the 5 star rating, but I feel I can deem this one an "underground" classic.

    5 out of 5 stars rock n' roll!.......2003-05-22

in my opinion this album is better than electric sweat... it is more representative of their awesome live show. whenever i need a mooney fix and they're not in town i pop this cd in and it eases my pain. this band is the greatest rock n roll band of recent time, maybe its because they sound so much like the oldtimers. if you like mc5 and no gimmicks rock n roll- buy it!!

1 out of 5 stars Why the Hype?.......2003-04-17

I expected great things from this album after buying the "Your love is a gentle whip" 7". I listened to this album one time and never picked it up again. I don't know why this band is being hyped now, there is better "garage rock" out there, like Supercharger, The No-talents, and Teengenerate. If you are new to the whole garage rock thing go elsewhere.

    4 out of 5 stars What's not to like?.......2003-04-06

No, it's not as good as 'Electric Sweat'; yes, it's self-consciously retro, even (dare I say it) kitschy -- but that doesn't stop 'People Get Ready' from working as an exercise in balls-out rock'n'roll that's also a lot of fun. And don't write these guys off as a novelty nostalgia act, either. 'A Song About Today' is one of those absolutely flawless songs that has everything in exactly the right place -- the vocals border on hysterical, the guitars feed back at the right pitch, the bassline drops an octave at exactly the right moment. Best of all, it's exactly what it claims to be: a song about today. Some tracks here are a little weak, but who cares? Not only do these guys pair unpretentious rock (no grunge-era navel gazing or punk-era angst here) with old fashioned rock attitude (as if there were anything wrong with a little showmanship), for the last track they trot out and honest-to-god organ. Point to the Stooges, the MC5, the New York Dolls and even the Flamin' Groovies as primary influences all you want; but that organ is pure Faces.

4 out of 5 stars MOONEY SUZUKI ROCK.......2002-11-06

A good disc by a really good band, but not a great one. If you want to really hear GREAT ROCK N ROLL, go and buy the THE FLAMING SIDEBURNS disc "SAVE ROCK N ROLL"! They played with MS last week and totally blew them away... A much better investment of your money and a MUCH BETTER BAND.

5 out of 5 stars favorite Mooney album.......2007-02-28

First a declaration of bias - I am a big John Mooney fan - all the way back to when I first heard his "Late Last Night" album in the 80's.

Of all his albums this remains my favorite (others are "Dealing with the Devil", and of course the one that started it all "Late Last Night")

This first came out on the House of Blues label (that edition may have become something of a collectible) - fortunately it is still available albeit sparsely on the (German) Ruf label.

Although Mooney has a had a long been influenced by New Orleans sound, this is the first album where I think he's managed the full integration/amalgamation between his original major Son House Delta Blues influence and New Orleans.

The sound on this album is full - yet mostly it's just him and a drummer (some tracks add bass and/or congas) - the minimal additional instrumentation enhances the overall sound - yet manages to put focus on the vocal and guitar playing. "Broken Mold" has a great New Orleans second-line rhythm that really makes the song over his live solo performances - great as those are.

The strength of this album is the selection of songs, there's not a weak one among them, and their sequencing - where each song in turn seems just right, and makes the listening an exhilerating pleasure from start to finish.

A very worthwhile album - if you like John Mooney - you should have this album -
and at some of the prices on Amazon MarketPlace there is almost no excuse......

    4 out of 5 stars Innovative blues.......2006-12-31

I initially heard one cut "Sacred Ground" on a local NPR station at the end of a long day on the road. Even after 400+ miles "Sacred Ground" had me tapping my steering wheel and wanting to play the cut multiple times to pin down the words.

The album carries on the joys of "Sacred Ground" - simple and direct lyrics, a raw voice with great musicality, acoustical bass and drums supporting an electric guitar, traditional blues with syncopation,... What Mooney does best is carry on a blues tradition while innovating within its constraints.

My only complaint is the similarity between several of the cuts - as creative an artist as John Mooney could surely modify his sound sufficently to give a distinctive touch to each song.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest blues CDs of the last 25 years.......2000-05-02

I have been listening to and collecting blues recordings since c. 1970 and I believe that this album is without question one of a handful of truly GREAT blues albums recorded in the modern era. Mooney's distinctive style -- a blend of intense, sharp-edged Delta blues with the syncopated second-line rhythms of New Orleans -- is at its apex on this release. And the minimalist backing (just bass & drums on most cuts) lets Mooney's guitar and vocals exert their powerful spell on you. The songs cut to the bone. This is one of those albums of which it can truly be said, "If you don't like it, then buddy you just don't like blues."

    5 out of 5 stars A true blues artist - creative & innovative.......2000-02-26

John Mooney has been recording, innovating and evolving his unique style of acoustic and electric blues for 20 years. Never satisfied with simple imatation, he always creates. This album is no exception.

John has developed and mastered an electric delta rooted guitar style then blended it with New Orleans syncopated rhythms to create a brew that is simultaneously soulfull and energizing.

There is little innovation in blues today that is keeping its heart and soul. John Mooney is an exception. He penned 9 of the 10 songs on this record an not one of them is a mere aping of some one else's style - yet they convey all of the human spirit and emotion of the masters before him.

John is an artist with both talent and creativity!

    5 out of 5 stars A tour-de-force by a truly unique bluesman.......1999-09-28

Mooney's voice is unforgettable. If you've heard him once, you'll always recognize him no matter what he's playing. And play he does!!! "Sacred Ground" and "Broken Mold" are raucus toe-tappers. Don't confuse his style on "Sideways in Paradise" (with Thackery) with this album. This one's much more raw and aggresive. Great Job!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Sentimental Favorite.......2006-11-30

My parents purchased this album back in the sixties, and I grew up listening to it. For this reason alone I love it. Even after all this time I still love these arrangements. Mr. Gould's orchestra give polished performances, the tone colors are varied and vivid. You will be carried to exotic locales by this music. It's a classic!

    5 out of 5 stars Jungle Fun.......2005-11-23

More soothing renditions by Morton Gould and composer Ernesto Lecuona. "Andalucia" is simply beautiful on this album. It has a strong melody that would sound good in almost any setting. My daughter brought this in for her second grade class, and most of the kids an parents liked the music. Some of it is very cinematic, and I think that's what some of them reacted too...made then think of old films. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars interesting change of pace.......2003-11-06

I had originally purchased this CD because I thought the music was similar to Les Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman (I made this assumption based on the picture on the jacket). I thought it was another "exotica" album. Boy, was I wrong! While the arrangements all have lush melodies, the music is symphonic in nature and have great orchestral arrangements. I like this CD a lot.
