Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. The duo starts big with the title track--Jack's fast-tumbling, falsetto-tinged lyrics jagging on hyper keyboard-sounding segues and Meg's pounding drums. They rarely shy from an idea, invoking acoustic Bob Dylan to frame "300 M.P.H. Torrential Outpour Blues," but interjecting a series of distortion-laden guitar paroxysms for good measure. The end of Icky, on "Effect and Cause," is where Jack's trademark vocal warble and spare, quick acoustic strums meet Meg's single-minded beats. The new Icky Thump album by the White Stripes delivers the hard driving music and lyrical verse we now expect from Jack. The two person band delivers a tower of sound and driving rhythm throughout the CD. My favorite is the biting "You don't know what love is" which is a Dylanesque rocker with the bite of positively fourth street. The percussion is great and the variety of music created by this duo continues to amaze. Stripers will not be disappointed!

Good, but ..........2007-07-12

The White Stripes have never made a bad disc, but I don't find anything hugely groundbreaking here. After Jack White's diversions with The Raconteurs and Loretta Lynn, I thought the Stripes might start taking some more chances, and there are a few here such as the bagpipes and the "ancient" synthesizer. Any other band and I would have given this CD 5 stars, but knowing how much the White Stripes are capable of vs. what appear here and four is the most I can give.

After Get Behind me Satan (which I found to be a slightly disappointing follow-up to Elephant) I was worried that The White Stripes wouldn't be able to redeem themselves. They said the album was written in just around two weeks and Jack White had also been busy with The Raconteurs. The album, however doesn't disappoint. It is fully enjoyable from start to finish with Little Cream Soda through the last track being a medley of some of their best songs ever. It is personally my second favorite White Stripes Album.

i have all the white stripes' albums since their debut "the white stripes". i'm 20. the white stripes were kinda the band that made me realize "what rock music is", so i have been holding them in high regard for a long time.

but somehow, icky thump is the first album of theirs which hasn't made me very happy.

these are all IMO only.

i. it's missing the rawness of the first album, "the white stripes". 'jimmy the exploder' and 'when i hear my name', those songs made me stop whatever i was doing, and go "WHOA".

ii. de stijl is original [and the cover of 'death letter', makes the whole cd cool].

iii. i like white blood cells. it's pretty. the brink before the phenomenal fourth album, 'elephant' [from WBC, 'dead leaves & the dirty ground', 'hotel yorba', 'fell in love with a girl' - such lovely, simple, classics].

iv. 'elephant' is a good introduction cd to the white stripes. i believe though, that icky thump doesn't quite measure up to elephant's polish.

v. 'get behind me satan' was more of a creative venture, and while it wasn't my personal fav, i appreciated the experimenting that went on. maybe this is a bit like what nirvana did with 'in utero', though i think that was a much fiercer, aggressive rebuttal to commercial success.

vi. and so, 'icky thump'. white stripes songs that are more than 3 minutes long. i think songs with a time limit worked in their favor. guitar riffs that don't really pack the same punch as the orgasmic solo in 'ball & biscuit'.

the album seems to lack the pure all-out rock magic which i've liked in the white stripes for a long time. that lack of a "formula"...that lack of cares for "safe" music. though if this is the direction they'll be taking, it saddens me quite a bit that they 'might not (really) know what to do', now that they've found themselves 'in a bigger room'...

Tiresome .......2007-07-11

First, if all you've heard of rock up to this point is stuff like the White Stripes, Coldplay, Radiohead and other contemporary bands than this album will probably sound fresh and cool and it would be pointless to read my review. But, if you expect a little bit more from your rock and roll than the same old sh#@ this review is a buyer beware....

Tiresome is a word I never thought I would put to a White Stripes album, but I find it the most natural word to express my impression of Icky Thump. I was surprised how many rock cliches I heard on his side project with The Raconteurs and thought perhaps because it was a band effort that once he got back into the saddle with as The White Stripes all that bombastic artiness would return, but no!

Icky Thump has really poor melodies and the lyrics are some of the worst this side of Paul McCartney ala Wing's Wildlife.

The best moments of the album which there are very few come in songs like A Martyr For My Love For You and the catchy Icky Thump. But overall this is just a big disappointment from a man that is capable of much more.

Get Behind Me Satan was a pretty good album but it marked a departure from the other White Stripes albums because it sounded like Jack White was expanding his sound, after the awful Raconteurs album and this Icky Thump it sounds more like it was an failed attempt to escape his own success.

Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," it's no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. In some ways, it's amazing they didn't do this sooner, given the way Keith Urban in particular is blurring country-pop lines, much as Garth Brooks and others did in the 1990s. Bon Jovi has done it again. This is a great CD. It is very different than much of their music, but the music and lyrics are fantastic. Lost Highway, Make a Memory, Whole Lot of Leaving, Any other day, Seat next to you, ........I could go on and on. They are all fabulous. The duet with LeAnn Rimes, Stranger, is fabulous, incredible lyrics.

For years, I've liked Bon Jovi and enjoyed their music. But, when I think of serious rock productions which define an artist, I think of Billy Joel's "Nylon Curtain" or "The Stranger" and U2's "Achtung Baby" and "The Joshua Tree". Bottom line for me with the above examples - serious fun and seriously composed and produced with every track being very, very solid. I feel that this effort by Bon Jovi is ROCK SOLID! Every track flows well and translates through what seems like to me the band thoroughly enjoying themselves! I think this is their best work by far and one I will be listening to for years to come! Thanks Bon Jovi!!!!!

I love this CD. Bon Jovi at his best: the overall impact is "just right"--not too slick but still rocky enough to satisfy the rocker chick in me, but not so harsh that the romantic side isn't satisfied too...these guys get better as time goes on.

Not like their original, but still a great album.......2007-07-11

Love many of the songs. I personally prefer the first half of the album to the second half. I feel the song choices are better in the first half, but that doesn't mean that after listen to the album a few more times I won't like the second half just as much. The first half just seems to have songs that linger in my memory well after listen to the cd. Especially love Lost Highway, Make A Memory and We Got It Going On.

Make a Memory is a slow song, similar to All About Loving You from the Bounce album or Always (not to be put in the same basket as Always though). Its a slow, teary song which pulls at the heart string.

We Got It Going On, reminds me of I'll Sleep When I'm Dead. Its upbeat, fun and full of energy! Great song... fun to sing along to in the car!

Lost Highway brings a bit of a country feel, but still keeps with their rock and roll roots.

Some of the songs sounds similar to those on previous BJ and JBJ's solo albums, however this isn't such a bad thing. It looks like they realised what worked and reused those pieces on this album with similar sounds and vocals.

Overall I love this album and am happy I purchased it. If your an old fan who loves the hard rock from way back you may be disappointed because this album doesn't go back there.

Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

Kudos to Kelly for Standing her Ground..........2007-07-13

I believe that much of what is being put in the reviews for My December here and on other sites represent blogging-like attempts to either defend or crush Kelly on the new album. They do not seem to be true attempts at conveying the feel of the album as a whole to a prospective buyer.

If you are after the latest KC album because you support Kelly fully and wish to show her that support as she stretches to find her place, then this album is definitely for you.

However, if you are after singable, 'hear it three times and find yourself humming along' songs that will stay with you years from now... well, it is just not there to be found. If you buy it in this scenario, you will later regret it.

The verdict will be handed over in time by the Radio world, and that verdict is not going to be a positive one for Kelly. For the record, I am a huge fan of Breakaway, and Kelly had to really earn that purchase from me before entering my music collection. Now that I am a fan I was looking forward to what she had in store this time, and on a personal level I am disappointed. But I continue to give kudos to Kelly for what she is trying to do. If she will weather the storm the failure of this album will bring - and it WILL lack success - then we will have even more to be excited about the NEXT time around.

As for whether to buy the album or not? Just decide which type of fan you are based on my previous statements. And if you don't have BREAKAWAY yet, buy it now instead. You will not be disappointed in the slightest.

I didn't know what to expect from this album due to all the bad press surrounding the release, but I was very pleased when I listened to it. It probably won't appeal to the younger fans of Idol and the 'Breakaway' album because the lyrics are definately more mature, but don't write it off until you listen to it.

Kelly's voice shines on this album as well; there's a lot of emotion coming through her voice, which I assume is because she actually wrote these songs.

Some of the best tracks on the album are How I Feel, Chivas, Can I Have a Kiss, Be Still and Sober.

I bought Kelly Clarkson cd My December thinking it would be a good cd.
I was so disappointed in this one. I bought the cd Breakaway before
I thought that was good. My December did not rank up there with Breakaway.
I would not recommend this one to buy it would be a waste of money.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. The resulting package is a comprehensive overview of a once--well, twice--in-a-lifetime project that, especially after Harrison's passing, will never be repeated. --Hal Horowitz

I had this album when it came out. My car was broken into and they stole the tape player WITH the tape in it. I've been waiting for the new release ever since. Can't believe how much I missed it! Great music by some of my favorite musicians. Not as keen on Volume 3, but love it all!

I am being very generous giving this product 3 stars. 2 would be more like it but it gets 3 for Roy Orbisons' strong presence on the first cd. I had an irresistable urge to hear Handle with Care again a while back only to discover the album was out of print. I looked forward to receiving this sort of thinking I liked this album back in the day. Well now I know why I dumped the album. Handle with Care is still brilliant, but the rest of these 2 cd's is fairly self indulgent and not really representative of any of these artists as individuals in my opinion. It seems to be an album of great musicians who are friends and like each other forcing themselves to try to make songs. It plods on and on in basically the same style. Dylan seems to regard it as a joke, and I can hear George attempting to try to keep the interest and the idea together but it not quite working. I've heard worse but the album doesn't stand the test of time I don't think. The production is brilliant and crystal clear though. Wish the Beatles would do this to their catalog.

Tweens aren't often heralded for their good judgment and excellent taste (Heelys--hello), but if any young starlet can redeem them, it's Hannah Montana. On this, the second soundtrack from the Disney Channel series, Miley Cyrus takes her cues from her TV alter ego, who has an alter ego of her own: Disc 1 features Miley as Hannah, hair-tossing pop princess by weekend, likable schoolgirl by weekday (see "Old Blue Jeans" and "True Friends" to get a sense of each episode's un-cloying sweetness). But disc 2 is the start of something new, as her friends over on the High School Musical set might say: Miley sings strictly as her spunky, truth-telling self. This yields a number of pepped-up pop tracks bound to vibrate through the walls of pink bedrooms everywhere--"See You Again" is a boy-centric song instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in seventh grade and suffered a bout of bashfulness, "East Northumberland High" puts a punk spin on an I'm-just-not-into-you tale, and "Clear" bounces on a reggae beat while canceling any doubt about our heroine's ability to stand up for herself. Like Hannah before her, Miley makes the best of both worlds--this well-worth-it set, by turns rockin' and reflective, is a masterful example. --Tammy La Gorce

The two-disc _Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus_ release is a worthy successor to her no. 1 album of last year (see: the _Hannah Montana_ soundtrack album, 2006). As of this writing, at least seven of the songs from that first album have cracked the top 100 (Billboard). Additionally, the _Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus_ album placed no. 1 on the Billboard charts during its first week of release.

My family and I thoroughly enjoy this collection. There are twenty songs (ten by Hannah Montana and ten by Miley Cyrus), and the styles represented are quite eclectic. There appears to be a humble maturity occurring in her vocals and in a number of the 'Miley' texts being set to music; indeed, some of them are philosophical, while others are retrospective and (speculatively speaking) apparently prophetic, to a degree. Although the album is enjoyable to hear and digest on its own merits, in the opinion of this writer a number of tracks require repeated listenings in order to grasp some of the more subtle nuances, both musical and textual. Perhaps it is this aspect of the double-CD album that is most impressive: the quality of the work presented here by Miley and her entourage of writers is musically engaging and challenging to the listener.

The tunes on this double CD set, like those included on the initial soundtrack release, are again cleverly written. Among the genres and styles covered are ballads ("One In a Million" and "Make Some Noise"), rock, techno-pop, and a smidge of hip-hop, as well as songs containing both Spanish ("Let's Dance") and reggae ("Clear") elements. There are also some tracks (e.g. "Old Blue Jeans" and "See You Again," among others) which incorporate slightly more complex harmonies--harmonies that should keep those whom are musically inclined engaged and attentive. Among the ballads represented, it is pleasing to note that not all are about the all-too-common subject of love (e.g., "Make Some Noise").

Some semi-technical musical aspects:

The transition (from Hannah to Miley) I spoke of when reviewing her first album is deliberate on this stylistically-diverse collection. The new 'Hannah' tunes are as energetic and forward-moving as any of the power-rockish songs on the first album, while the cuts recorded by Miley continue to be imaginative and thought-provoking musically, especially with regard to the harmonic progressions being used. The melodies contain a relatively balanced mix of conjunct and disjunct movement, with some being diatonic (e.g., "Start All Over") and others encompassing more angular intervals (such as with the pronounced agogic accents that articulate the opening of "Life's What You Make It"). Particularly engaging and memorable to this listener, at least, is the unfolding locrian-esque ascending melodic line (built upon the third degree of the mode in which the tune resides) of "Start All Over" and the rhythmic movement accompanying the embedded pair of descending perfect fourths (F-C and C-G) included in the instrumental and vocal opening to "Life's What You Make It."

There is a decidedly less preponderant use of E major on this album, with keys such as C-sharp minor ("Nobody's Perfect"), G major ("Life's What You Make It"), A major ("Right Here"), A minor ("See You Again"), C major ("Clear"), G minor ("East Northumberland High"), and F-sharp minor ("Let's Dance") being used. {It must be noted that it was for me difficult to determine the precise key a given tune was written in as the tracks often sound a half step higher or lower depending upon the medium (DVD player, radio, or television) or format (CD or DVD) being used. But the relative, if not the absolute, pitch of the keys used is extremely varied.} The 'signature' E major framework is not entirely absent, however, as it is used on a couple of songs, one of which is "Bigger Than Us," a tune first heard by this writer performed in a different iteration (and in a different style and tempo) by Billy Ray Cyrus on the hit television show, "Hannah Montana." Speaking of which, another of the tunes on the 'Hannah' portion of this most recent effort, "Rock Star," is a trademark song of hers stylistically, and is sure to make its way to the television series as have several others to date.

As was the case with her first album, I again noticed--and appreciated--how different the vocal timbre of Miley Cyrus can be depending on the key being employed. Significantly, there are a few times where she cautiously extends her vocal range upward, and in so doing continues to attack her notes with excellent intonation and with what I perceive to be a modicum of ease. I am still hopeful that we will one day hear a more extensive (and melodically protracted) use of her lower range; the vocal quality is markedly different and may lend itself to a plethora of styles not yet represented on either of her first two albums.

The performances of "Nobody's Perfect" (the melody was heard initially as the "Bone Dance" on the television show, albeit with a different and more script-specific text) and "Life's What You Make It" are particularly engaging. It seems to me that both tunes (with a nod to "Make Some Noise" in 6/8 meter, and the harmonically compelling "Old Blue Jeans") are among the most imaginative and ambitious of any performed by Hannah thus far. Interestingly, "Make Some Noise" is the second tune of Miss Montana to use the barcarolle-like 6/8 meter; the first being the jointly-performed (with her father) "I Learned From You," the final cut to grace her premiere album, and a song which is interesting for its sporadic yet well-positioned use of hemiola. {N.B.: The songs by Miley are perhaps even more ambitious than those of Hannah Montana, with such gems as "See You Again," the dark (dare I say sardonic?) "East Northumberland High," and the somewhat flamenco-esque "Let's Dance" residing within and/or flirting tenuously with the minor mode; tangental cuts such as "Right Here" and the reggae-like "Clear" employ the unlikely melodic interval (performed vocally) of the ascending major seventh(!).} Curiously, and yet refreshingly, Miss Cyrus in some of the repeated sections of the pointedly melancholic "See You Again" chooses to vacillate between the raised (and eventually lowered) leading tone degree. The tension produced by the (albeit protracted, depending on one's musical memory) cross-relationship makes the tune somewhat modally ambiguous. Combined with her judiciously placed upward and downward slurring occurring on several of the phrases, and with the performance of the beginnings and endings of these segments being spot on with regard to pitch, the result tends to drive the music forward with a measured tenacity, which in the opinion of this writer is one mark of musicality occurring on the album. It is also noteworthy to mention that the first three tracks on the final CD--"See You Again," "East Northumberland High," and "Let's Dance"--each occupy a minor mode sound world.

Although I have given a cursory review of "Nobody's Perfect" elsewhere, it is important to reiterate that the tune is performed remarkably well, with Miss Montana's stage presence and accompanying rhythmic synchronizations (hand gestures and choreography) augmenting an already intriguing piece of writing. The track may interest those who enjoy relatively uncommon chord progressions in pop music. It begins and ends in C-sharp minor, but meanders effortlessly through a B minor/D major framework, eventually gravitating toward E major. The combination and succession of pitch centers--and especially the harmonic tension created between the opening and closing key of C-sharp minor and the B minor/D major/G(!) major constructs within which the second major section of this work vacillates--provides a stark yet musically engaging contrast.

I continue to appreciate the image Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus has thus far portrayed as well. As a father of several children (including four daughters, each of whom loves her music), it is gratifying to see a positive role model (with talent to burn) coming out of the Disney stable. I and my family wish her all the best in the years to come.

A Very Good Second Album .......2007-07-10

Miley/Hannah produce some catchy songs on this great follow-up to the first album. In many ways this two-disc set is better than the first Hannah Montana album (there is no filler from other groups or singers) and there are many age-appropriate songs that adults will find themselves singing along to. They have included so many songs that not every song is a winner (some of the slow ones are boring) and songs that Miley wrote show that she is still learning how to songwrite. She also oversings a couple tunes. But overall this is very good, well produced and recommended.

Far Better than it has the Right to Be.......2007-07-06

Everyone above who is complaining that "this isn't real music" and that it is only a marketing ploy are people who haven't actually listened to the CD. The first disc (the "Hannah") side is completely how it is described. Just a boring collection of Disneyesque pop made to advertise a TV show. But somewhere along the way, someone let the album get good. The "Miley" disc is far, far better than it has any right to be. If it wasn't packaged with "Hannah Montana" it would be getting the rave reviews that follow fellow popsters Kelly Clarkson, Gwen Stefani and Robyn, because it is just as good, if not better, then them all. Unfortunately too many people like to go on and on about the end of the music business and want to keep their street cred, so they fail to actually listen to music. Pop Music isn't a bad word, and this certainly isn't bad pop music. Hopefully Pitchforkmedia, long the perveyors of too-cool-for-you indie rock, but also champions of slick-as-hell pop music will catch wind and help out the cause.

Sometimes it's O.K.--even important--to put aside your reluctance to embrace artists who make teenage girls scream. I absolutely loved Maroon 5's first album, but this one doesn't quite do it for me. The lyrics are great, however, the song itself lacks original beats. I think they should team up with Timberland or another producer to improve the sound of the album.

I love having a "little secret band" -- the garage band with a small following or something like that -- but Maroon 5 is definitely not that anymore. Normally I hate when songs go single and are blasted all over the airways (Beyonce's "Irreplaceble" a prime example -- I loved that song until I heard it every other minute), but I've even set "Makes Me Wonder" as my ringtone and I'm STILL not tired of it. I love that song, along with just about every song on the CD.

If you want something Songs About Jane-esque, I wouldn't advise this CD. This one is a bit edgier, and there's nothing really romantic about this CD (their only contemporary song that is is "Infatuation," but it's left off the CD and I had to get it elsewhere.) It's a nice mix of slower, smoother tracks and really upbeat rock-soul tracks. This CD just solidified my love for Maroon 5, and anyone with an eclectic taste in music should be satisfied with it, too.

Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. California musicians Ginger Reyes (bass) and Jeff Schroeder (guitar) complete a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski

About three days ago, I went to Wikipedia to see how well Zeitgeist was doing with "professional" critics. Unfortunately, Zeitgeist was getting mixed reviews. All-Music gave the album a two star out of five claiming that the "album sucked because some of the original members weren't participating in the reunion". Terrible reviews. Other reviews hailed Zeitgeist as a wonderful comeback album and I'd have to agree completely.

Zeitgeist shows the harder rocking Billy Corgan, there aren't any soft songs in this album. That was the earlier Smashing Pumpkins, and that's the exactly the reason why I love this album. It's something new and fresh.

I've learned that reviews are a waste of time. Everybody's different and it's impossible to have an album that EVERYBODY enjoys. Do yourself a favor and listen to the album yourself, make your own judgments.

Great album..........2007-07-13

If you dig the Pumpkins material and the variety of styling that Billy Corgan has gone after, you'll like this album. The low tuning does create a less sonic pleasing tone than their previous albums. And his recording technique for the vocals seem more "front" than previous albums as well, which in subtle ways distracts the listener from the guitars/drums.

If you're looking for a frame of reference, think "white spider/blue skies bring tears" from Machina II, meets Mellon Collie era rock, with a touch of Billy C and Jimmy C's solo albums. I feel there is less experiment going on, though definitely a return to heart-felt, straight up rock (definitely not Adore era styling). There are the softer tones, but I guarantee that the first tunes that will jump out at you are the ones that make you think "hell yeah."

I'd give this one a 4.5 stars to make the point that this one isn't quite what their older albums are, but it really is a great album once you fall into it. My personal belief is that if they follow up with another album in the next couple of years, and let two other band members contribute to the material, this will be an amazing platform for them to launch off of. Skimming through the album, it looks like only Billy C. and Jimmy C. wrote and recorded the music, which seems to me to be the cause of the somewhat surprisingly "empty" sound when it comes to the experimental and sonic edge you'd expect from the pumpkins. Still...as said a few times here, a great album.

Personally, I think it's a great record, but would have been even better if they had jettisoned the last song (the aimless, tuneless "Pomp and circumstance" and included two of the B-sides I downloaded, "Stellar" and "Death from above" - but as usual, the record companies prefer to shoot themselves in the foot in this time of declining record sales. The labels aren't being run by music lovers anymore, just idiot bean-counters, who in this case didn't know (or care) that two of the best songs (the aforementioned two B-sides) were actually as good as anything else on the album! It happened with the last Cure album, too. The labels deserve exactly what they are getting, and can shove the four different versions of this CD up their collective a**es!! So, I say, get those two extra tracks, burn them onto a CD without "Pomp", and enjoy!!

You've Got To Be Kidding Me!.......2007-07-13

I waited over 2 years for this?! I am just amazed at all these reviewers who have hailed this album as the triumphant return Billy hoped for. Even the Pumpkin's worst songs (Machina I and some of II) were much more rich and layered than any of these "pop" songs hidden behind walls of distorted guitars. You can't add driving percussion and wailing guitars to cover up the fact these songs just plain stink. The production sounds like something that was done in a pay by the hour studio. I never thought He would write lyrics this trite or have to fake angst to pull off songs riddled from political statements that are out of touch. Oh well, I guess one of the great song writers of our time has finally run out of things worth singing about--it's a shame, too, because his voice has never sounded this good. I guess I'll just dust off Pisces Iscariot and MCIS and remember when Billy was relevant and still showcasing some amazing talent.

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. "Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

Some people age by body, but never by soul. That's the best way I can think of describing Paul McCartney. His new album is fresh and is a pleasant listen.

Paul wrote and composed all of the songs and they have that familiar ring of perfection and fun with most of the lyrics telling a story. I may not understand each story that Paul is giving us in song, but to me the true tale is that this man is a singer, songwriter, story teller, artist, musician and survivor.

Sir Paul McCartney has survived fame, fortune, life and loss. I believe that music is his medicine and magic - it's a way for him to manage from day to day.

On his new work, one of my favorite tracks is "Dance Tonight" because it's just plain McCartney fun and has a quick beat and lyrics that are easy to learn and follow. I also like "Vintage Clothes". The melody is upbeat, but the words for me really conveyed a strong message of personal introspection and made me do some self-thinking. I thought the song's message was living where you are, as who and what you are, and not going back to what you were. (I actually went to the album's website and read about this song and I was pretty much right with my introspective theory). I will list the website at the end of the article so you can review the lyrics for each song as well as read what Paul has to say about their meaning.

"House of Wax" is rather haunting with the slow piano melody and the eerie lyrics. Of course, I automatically thought of the movie - the Vincent Price version - however, a quick read through the lyrics revealed it was not the same plot. The song still takes you on an audio journey that hints at visions of helplessness and hope.

The final track, "Nod Your Head", immediately made me think of the Beatles - I thought it had that kind of sound to it. See, I was there. Well, not really there, but I was on the living room floor in front a Zenith floor model television the first time that Paul McCartney and the Beatles were on television.

Back to the music - I liked this album; I didn't love it. The lyrics and music were polished and professional; however, I just felt they both lacked passion. I think I'm still mourning Linda. I'm not sure if the missing passion is mine or Paul's.

Memory Almost Full.......2007-07-13

Paul McCartney fans will love this CD. His music is his classic style yet is introspective, subtle and fun. I loved it!

Very good album. His best work since Flaming Pie and it might even be a bit better than that album. If your on the fence I say go for it, especially if you like Paul when he hits his stride.

McCartney's Latest -- Nod Your Head!.......2007-07-13

Sir Paul's music entertains the 50-year olds, the pre-teens and every other age with his beautiful tunes. Play "Dance Tonight" or "Nod Your Head" for your tykes and I guarantee you, Paul will have brand new fans to his music!

Finally, a McCartney Gem!.......2007-07-13

I was a rabid Beatle fan from the day they landed in New York City until the broke up, and then on into their solo careers. I always liked John best, but thought Paul's albums worthy at least through Band on the Run. However, for the past 15 years or so, Paul's albums have continued to dissappoint. I would occasionally purchase a new McCartney release, and dutifully play it a number of times, thinking that if I got familiar with it, it would grab me. Despite my determined efforts, they never did. Until Memory Almost Full.
Memory is a gem. The arrangements are layered and remind me of the more complex arrangements that the Beatles evolved into. McCartney's lyrics do not insult, and are often meaningful or have that Beatlesque obscurity that keeps you wondering. I do not have to force myself to play Memory -- I have played it constantly since purchasing it, and like my old Beatle albums, I play the entire CD.
Sir Paul, you finally did it once again!

Easy Tiger, Ryan Adams's ninth solo studio album, is a return to form in every way. He's already shown that he can bash out three albums in one year--not to mention the hilarious fake hip-hop records posted for free on his Web site--and that he can sound as much like the Grateful Dead as he wants to in his constant subsequent touring. Backed once again by the Cardinals, Adams synthesizes and refines his approach to smooth, gorgeous country-pop. "Tears of Gold" is one of the best songs he's written in ages, while "Two" is a slowly percolating, sweet little number that recalls Sean Hayes in its soulful folksiness (someone named Sheryl Crow accompanies Adams on vocals). One of the greatest treats of this languorous, twangy album is the subtle ways that genre gets played with. "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" is the best Harvest outtake Neil Young never wrote, while the treated, synth-sounding guitar solo on the druggy, chooglin' "Halloweenhead" sounds like it comes straight out of Journey. And "The Sun Also Sets" sounds more than a little like Rufus Wainwright covering Fred McDowell's "Write Me a Few of Your Lines." It bursts with enough melodrama as to border on musical theater. I think there are really only two kinds of pop music CDs these days. There are the ones you listen to only once or twice, maybe downloading the single good song to your iPod or computer; then there are others that grow stronger, sweeter, and more necessary each time you play them. Gold was that way; Cold Roses was that way; so was Jacksonville City Nights. I won't say Adams is the best North American singer-songwriter since Neil Young...but I won't say he isn't, either. What I know is there has never been a Ryan Adams record quite as strong and together as Easy Tiger; it's got enough blue-eyed, blue-steel soul (with the faintest country tinge) to make me think of both Marvin Gaye and the Righteous Brothers. Probably ridiculous, but true. And the songs themselves are beautiful--the lyrics tightly focused and brief, the feeling one of melancholy calm that will probably be a revelation to fans that remember the old, sometimes angry Ryan Adams.

Now there's this, maybe the best Ryan Adams CD ever. And I know you want to listen to it right away. But slow down. Take your time. This album asks for that, and it will reward your full attention.

In other words--easy, Tiger.

Another incredible release from an incredible talent.......2007-07-13

There are only a few artists these days that I am excited enough about to run out and buy their new albums as soon as they are released. Ryan Adams is one of those, and has been since the release of his second solo release, Gold. Now that I have had Easy Tiger for a few weeks and have listened to it many (and I do mean many, many) times, I feel like I can share an informed opinion about the record. My very first reaction to Easy Tiger was luke warm. I liked it. But it didn't grab me. But that is the beauty of Easy Tiger; it creeps in and takes hold. After a few days I was really starting to get into a several of the songs. I found myself humming the songs at work, which resulted in a few odd glances. "Two" was the first song I noticed. Ryan has always been quite gifted at writing forlorn love songs. "Two" carries on this tradition and shows he still has the ability to pull on those heart strings with a believable love song that anyone can identify with. But in my opinion, the shining star of this album is "The Sun Also Sets." That song in particular would make the album worth purchasing alone. This is another one of those songs that falls into the category of tragic love songs. Even the arguably oddest song on the album, "Halloweenhead", has really grown on me. Where it once seemed strangely out of place on the album, I can see how it's prefectly nestled exactly where it should be. The only song that I've yet to really enjoy is "Pearls on a String," which is the only reason I can think to not rate the album five stars. The final song, "I Taught Myself How to Grow Old" is another masterpiece by Ryan which perfectly brings Easy Tiger to close. Ryan's incredible falsetto voice is also in perfect form throughout the entireity of Easy Tiger. Ryan has proven over and over again that he is an incredible talent, and he continues to prove it with Easy Tiger. I highly recommend this cd to anyone with a penchant for Ryan's music or alternative/country/rock music in general.

Are the critics hearing the same album?.......2007-07-12

Maybe two or three songs are of the standard I associate with Ryan Adams. He has a lot of great songs and a lot of bad songs. This album, along with 29, is consisted of mostly bad songs. It seems like he's doing it to just do it - the single Two is a good example of this - come on Ryan, you can do better than that. It's a snoozer for me...

I have enjoyed most of Adams's previous releases but not this one. Song #5 is the only keeper in my opinion. If I had listened to it first, I would not have bought it.

A Solid "Gold" Comeback.......2007-07-11

Songwriter Ryan Adams plugs his guitar back in on a few songs and drops the country pose for an eclectic album. Like most Adams albums, the songs vary in quality, from the perfection of "It Takes Two" to the grating "Halloweenhead" (and Halloween is my favorite holiday, so it's not easy to use that word for a song title and make me skip it every time it comes up). Also, for a guy that went through rehab, highlighting the "4:20" on the watch on the cover is a crass move. Overall, it's a solid album, but definitely not another "Heartbreaker" as some reviewers have claimed. Set your expectations somewhere in the area of Adams's "Gold," and you'll be satisfied.

Great Album.......2007-07-11

Easy Tiger is easily one of Ryan's best albums. It may not have catchy, poppy beats like Firecracker or To be Young, but it's a very, very tight album. The flow of songs is wonderful, and it's hard not to listen to the entire album all the way through every time you put it in. Songs like Two, Everybody Knows, and the Sun Also Sets easily qualify for a Ryan Adams greatest hits record - if it would be even possible to put that many songs in one package.

A great album from one of the greatest living singer/songwriters, and without a doubt the greatest of his generation.
