5 out of 5 stars Top 3 of my 3000 CDs collection.......2007-03-15

These two albums belong to my Top 3 albums of my about 3000 CDs collection between Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Allan Holdsworth, Screaming Headless Torsos and Frank Zappa. This CD is a must!!! Buy it!!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Funk/Metal Album You've Never Heard........2006-10-12

"Strength..." opens with simple guitar picking and suddenly explodes into a flying metal frenzy that instantly knocks you off your feet as the aptly titled "Break The Chains" does just that...not only on this great LP, but also in your mind. What follows is a non-stop barrage of great tunes addressing racial profiling, police brutality (the Bludgeoning "Crime Story")the loss of your soul in Hell ("Judgement Day")even "can't we all just get along?" sentiments set to bottom-heavy reggae ("Understanding")all delivered with the gusto, speed and virtuosity of 20 bands. While their chops are more polished than Bad Brains, their lyrics are less evocative than Living Colours' and they lack the bizarro, genius qualities of Fishbone, yet came with loads of metallic, brutal riffing, 24/7 Spyz were a promising, powerful band that the whole music world slept on, and they missed out big time. Hard to find (I still have my original cassette copy from 1992) but worth searching for, "Strength In Numbers" is a terrific release that somehow came and disappeared before getting the attention it truly deserved. A Lost Classic.

5 out of 5 stars more awesome metal.......2006-12-14

The name 24-7 spyz sounds like a rap group but it's not but that's ok I hate rap anyway these guys rock. the best song stunt man i seen the music video years ago. 5/5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Listen 2 this album 24-7.......2004-05-08

This is my stuff here... 4 real!!!
As a musician and a fan of various genres of music I must say that Black Rock is much needed. It seems like rock and roll has been completely co opted by white folx. Don't get me wrong, I luv me some Metallica and Black Sabbath and Led Zep. But I dearly miss Jimi, Eddie Hazel and the soul that black people have always put in2 rock and roll.

Anyway... THIS ALBUM. DAMN. I can remember when I 1st walked in2 a record store in STL Central West End with my partnas and we heard CRIME STORY... it was over. I had been a Spyz fan fromt the 1st album, but this album (as well as Living Colour's Times Up and Fishbones' Reality of my Surroundings) showed a strength and maturity that truely had me convinced that Black Rock was here 2 stay. The guitar riffs and solos on here are monsterous, the bass lines xxxtra phat and the drums are 2 tight (sorry, Anthony was not as tight as this white boy). This was the Spyz peak album 2 me. I liked some of what they have done since, but most of it pales in comparison. I still have this in my CD wallet (it's been there since it came out) and I don't anticipate puttin it away soon.

PEACE

5 out of 5 stars Still nothing like it today.......2004-01-25

After over ten years, this CD still sounds fresh and original. 24-7 Spyz runs the gamult on this one, ranging from heavy-hitting songs like "My Desire", "Break the Chains" and the refreshed "Stuntman"; soulfull songs like the ska-inspired "Understanding"; and even slower songs like "Earth and Sky" and the closing track "Travelling Day." Simply awesome.

5 out of 5 stars How can I be.............2003-11-14

the first person to rate this AMAZING cd. What are you people thinking? For the fans of Living Colour, Fishbone, why have you not rated this cd? This cd came out in 1991 or 2 and has continued to make waves for those who love heavy metal soul. Jimi, Rick, Jeff and Joel are amazing. Too bad Joel and Jeff departed. I loved the original line up with P. Fluid and Anthony Johnson. What ever happened to them? Anyways, this was supposed to be their 2nd breakout recording (Gumbo Millenium was the first). I was hurt when P., Anthony, Jeff and Joel all departed when they did. They do have a new cd coming soon with Tony Lewis pounding. Of course Jimi and Rick are present. Also, get Jimi's 21CENTURYSOUTHBRONXROCKSTAR! Amazing cd. Love, Peace and Hair greese!

3 out of 5 stars Eclectic World/Funk-Rock Goofiness.......2006-03-16

I remember buying this album on a whim when it first came out,and I am still happy that I bought it.

The best thing I can say about this is although it does reference all the obvious influences(Hendrix,Funkadelic, etc.)what the Spyz ended up with was something all their own.

Some people make the criticism that when black musicians do rock,it sounds more R&B or Funk-laced than straight ahead rock they expect.Let me assure you that these guys can play straight ahead metal, the guitars are heavy and crunchy, the leads are squealing, and the bass and drums are thumping and dead on.

Of course this album is a mix of a bunch of stuff,metal,funk/r&b,rap,world music and it all gets blended into a wacky(yes, these guys have a sense of humor)stew.

P.Fluid isn't everyone's idea of a great singer, but his elastic vocalizing gives the music a warped edge.Jimi Hazel(can you guess who his 2 fave guitarists are?)has a great heavy tone, and is just as colorful and diverse as Vernon Reid. The bassist and drummer are solid, convinclingly propelling the band from hardcore to African-pop flavored songs.

These guys were excellent musicians,period.

As black rock-based musicans, inevitably 24-7 Spyz would be compared to Living Colour. The Spyz are every bit as good as far as musicianship goes, but I would say, they definitely had a different flavor, much weirder and funkier than Living Colour.

Some notes on the music:

The first two tracks are wild rockers with P.Fluids'koo-koo blathering and convoluted wordplay,Jimi's searing wah-drenched solos, and a chugging rhythm secton.

"Spyz on Piano"is just each guy goofing around and pounding on the piano, not music, but silly fun.

The only "rap-rock"song on here is Don't Push Me,vocals by drummer Anthony, and it's my least favorite track.

Track 7,Racism,could be construed as rap/rock,but it's not,it's clearly a heavy ripper in the vein of Bad Brains.

I guess this album may not be grand in scope enough to be considered essential, but as I said, these guys were very versatile and talented. And they deliver on every song,it wasn't as if they felt the need to mine some genre just to prove they were eclectic.

5 out of 5 stars funk-punk reggae-rock style.......2005-10-13

Now that I've got a few dollars, I can go back and get the CDs that i couldn't afford in my college days.

14 tracks... 6 brilliant, 6 good, and 2 throwaway. track 7 (a throwaway) is not a song as much as a credit list set to offkey piano riffs. when i ripped this into my treo, i left that one on the CD.

the first 3 tracks are crushers not all brilliant but excellent mastering by whoever put together the 'setlist'. the next few are ok, with the afformentioned track 7 being the low point. unlike some CD's were the first few tracks are the best and only good work, this CD picks back up at track 8 and smokes through the rest of the set with only track #11 racism, the obligatory rap-rock track, not quite reaching the eyes closed, head nodding, testifying heights of the surrounding tracks.

ps., the spyz were singing about 'culo' long before reggaeton artists like pitbull came along with buk-nekid booty shakin' girls in the video.

5 out of 5 stars Moshpit Meets Motown.......2007-01-23

For darn near close to 20 years Jimi Hazel, Rick Skatore & assorted others have been doing a lot of heavy lifting on the soul-metal end of the spectrum. Starting out as an equally skilled, but less manic, Fishbone-like proposition, 1992's _Strength In Numbers_ saw 24-7 Spyz declare allegiance to metal and never look back. Unfortunately record label politics, and continual lineup instability, makes a Spyz album a truly rare event. Last album _Heavy Metal Soul By The Pound_ delivered on both fronts and then some. 10 years later, _Face the Day_ finds the Spyz wasting no more time and getting down to business, quickly dropping four melodic soul-metal monsters right off the bat. The album's title track is a good place to start if you aren't familiar with the Spyz, as all the elements are here, the soaring vocal harmonies, eclectic stylistic changeups, massive, face-ripping riffs and inspirational lyrics. Jimi has never sounded better, both vocally and guitar-wise, and proves to be one of the most underrated of all the metal guitar heroes. New drummer Tobias Ralph proves ready to the task, equalling the nimble beats of previous drummer Joel Maitoza and locking in tight with bassist Rick Skatore. Once again the Spyz do their trademark changeup right around "Faithless," indulging the straight-up funk/soul fetish. "Blues For Dimebag" is a smoking number, with some absolutely wild stunt guitar by Mr. Hazel. "Plastique" and "Anything For You" are fun, ska-infected but lightweight numbers. Two totally sweet covers end the album, an arm-hair-raising rendition of "Bad Reputation" by Thin Lizzy, and a reverent cover of "Stand!" by Sly and the Family Stone with Dug from King's X on vocals. While the production is a little garagey, and IMO the mastering could have done a little more for clarity, these grooves simply can't be contained. You have to give it to these guys for dropping quality music after so long. Welcome back.

5 out of 5 stars These guys are SO UNDERRATED!!!!! Great Rock with heavy guitar , funky bass and drums that hold it all down.......2006-10-28

If you don't know 24/7 Spyz, you SHOULD!!!!!! These guys are just phenomenal! They have NEVER received the recognition they deserve! Coming out of the Bronx, they have been in the forefront of black rock music since the 80's! This CD is no exception to that claim. Jimi Hazel is just flat out WICKED!!!!!! He OWNS the WAH Pedal. You wanna hear some serious Ernie Isley, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Hazel? Check out this guy. He's ripping it on "ride to nowhere" (a seriously good jam), and Blues for Dimebag. (a fitting tribute to another fantastic axeman taken from us WAY TOO SOON!) All the songs are good, but I have a personal preference to the aforementioned, along with soulsucker, saturday song and of course, stand.

Rick Skatore is a tremendously funky bass player, and Tobias Ralph is holding it WAY down! If you don't believe me, just check out their myspace page!

I saw the guys in a small venue and they ROCKED!!!!!!! If you like Bad Brains, The Busboys, Living Colour, Jimi Hendrix, The Isley Brother, Graham Central Station, Sly and the Family Stone, Led Zeppelin or just good ole funk rock, PLEASE pick up this CD.

As a guitar player myself, I feel Jimi Hazel is incredibly UNDERRATED! He can speak through his instrument and he NEEDS to be heard. Trust me, you'll like him! This is some heavymetalsoul at its best!!

5 out of 5 stars temporarily disconnected.......2002-12-31

This is the best 24-7 Spyz CD that features the original
P-Fluid, Anthony, Rick and Jimi line up...
All the songs are real crunchy, except for "choose me", but
even that one has a great middle eight. Well, the re-mix
version does anyway (track 11). There are equally as good 24-7 CDs, but
this one is the very best by the original 24-7 Spyz.
If you want to turn a friend on to 24-7 Spyz, this is the CD to
use as a 'starter'. A must for the heavy metal soul.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Throwback.......2002-01-11

(3-1/2 stars) Apparently there was some interest in Europe for the earlier 24-7 Spyz LPs, so they more or less went back in time, cast off vocalist Jeff Broadnax and brought back P.Fluid to throw this one together. Its often funny ("Shady girrrrrl....come out and playyy!") but sounds very much inferior, in both production and songwriting strength, after their incredible major-label debut _Strength In Numbers_ (unfortunately out of print). Still there's some excellent interplay on "Why" and "Stoner", and a decent funky instrumental "Agroovendeel" that are worth hearing, if you can sift through cruft like "Choose Me" (either version). If you liked the more early-Fishbone-like sound on _Gumbo Millenium_ and _This Is...24-7 Spyz_, rather than the more metallic sound on their later LPs, this will be right up your alley.

5 out of 5 stars A classic amongst few.......1999-03-04

5 out of 5 stars Spyz RULE.......2007-06-08

24-7 Spyz is one of the best bands on the planet. Heavy Metal Soul is what this band does, and they do it well. Jimi Hazel is a wonderful writer/guitarist, and Rick Skator is amazing on the bass! BUY THIS CD!!! NOW!

5 out of 5 stars Spyz are back!!!!.......2004-07-23

You heard what I said...the Spyz are back!!!! Check out www.24-7spyz.com if you don't believe me. What ever you do, if you don't own this CD, get it! This is one of the greatest CD's ever produced. I have been a HUGE fan of the Spyz since day one. I thought Strengh in Numbers was the true word until I heard HMSBTP, it truly redefined the genre for me. Jimi finally freed the band by becoming the lead singer. His voice fits the music better then P-Fluid and even Jeff Brodnax. Doug Pinnick of King's X was a great guest vocalist on 2 of the songs. This CD best expressed the range this band has. Too bad the label had little pull, "If I Could..." could have been a huge single, but Spyz got little air play. I can only hope they get back in the studio now that Jimi and Rick are togather again. We need more!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Metal Soul by the POUND!!.......2002-12-31

This is a great CD. It features Jimi Hazel and Rick Skatore on
vocals. It comes across as a heavy metal soul CD as the title explains. "Eyes dont lie" and "Crushonya" are great examples
of what Jimi and Rick want to convey to us musically. This CD
also features one of the greatest voices in the history of rock,
Doug Pinnick of KINGS X. This is their last CD as sadly they
broke up after it's release. This is phase 3 of 24-7 Spyz and
it is the last to feature Joel on drums. It starts off rather
crunchy and smoothes itself out into a great blend of silk
and molten metal.

5 out of 5 stars All hail the gods of funk!.......2001-12-21

I was fortunate enough to see Spyz live in Colorado Springs when HMSBTP came out. Even though the audience consisted solely of some 10 hardcore fans in a seriously dive bar, the boyz played like it was Mile High Stadium packed to the roof.

That same balls-out attitude is exemplified in this album. Spyz hold nothing back, especially their contempt for shallowness and ignorance( for example, "El Lame"). Rock with true attitude and intelligence... a rarity in today's bubblegum AOR-dominated scene. If you don't have HMSBTP in your collection, you're simply missing out.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite albums.......2001-10-27

If I could give this album more that a 5 I would. This album is very thick. it has a song for almost every mood. I can't think of a dull moment in the album. Jimi Hazel steps up to the mic this time. He works very well as a front man. It feels like there wasn't any conflict making the album. It seems like the whole band just clicked and pumped out this massive album. Pick it UP!

4 out of 5 stars One of the few bands who did rap-metal right .......2005-04-20

Nu-Metal has become a refuge for bad rappers and worse guitar players. Rhyming words don't make it Rap, and distorted guitars don't make it Metal. 24-7 Spyz was a uniquely talented and innovative band, combining massive doses of hard-rock crunch with stinky funk and clever lyrics. Jimi Hazel is one of the best guitar players you've never heard of. There are only 5 songs on here, but they are all excellent. If you can find any 24-7 Spyz CDs, they are well worth purchasing. This may have been their best lineup.

4 out of 5 stars If you can find this.......2004-12-23

I was going through my cassette tapes, trying to decide what I wanted to get on CD. This odd tape brought back memories. At least on my cassette tape, both sides of the tape are completely identical. It must be some sort of demo. Anyway, it's a precursor to a lot of bands like Living Colour, Sevendust, even Hed PE. It's hard and funky. I categorized it in my "funk metal" file with groups like Red Hot CP and Primus. I was curious if Amazon had anything on it. It would definitely be hard to find, but if you can get it cheap, go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Genius mix of soul and heavy metal!.......2002-10-21

I've been a fan of 24-7 Spyz since I first heard them around 1992. This cd is incredible! The Spyz can combine heavy metal and soul like no other. One listen to this cd and you won't be able to deny it. I agree completely with another reviewer about the possitive impact of Doug Pinnick's (of King's X) input. I can't describe this music in words. Just listen to it. They definitely have a style all their own. If you like this cd I also recommend "Strength In Numbers", "Harder Than You", and "This Is Twenty-Four-7 Spyz" (all by 24-7 Spyz).
Unfortunately these are not always easy to find. Good luck!

Note: "6" & "Heavy Metal Soul By The Pound" contain nearly an identical song list except each has two songs that the other does not:
    - "6" contains "7 and 7 Is" & "Along Comes Mary"
    - "Heavy Metal Soul By The Pound" contains "Earth and Sky" & "Save the World"

    3 out of 5 stars Fifty-fifty.......2000-08-15

The band had its best years in the early 90's but this album should make their name for the year 2000. It's a typical 24-7 Spyz album with some heavy funkmetal and some ballads, some good songs and some that you skip. I'll say that 50% of the album is worth listening more than once. The input from King's X frontman Doug Pinnick is certainly a upside to the album. Maybe they ought to do some more cooperations in the future?
