Second Album By This Line Up, Great Follow up Album.......2007-06-26
I believe this album had a lot of expectations from the critics, and there was a lot of hype and promotion put into this album because the record company was still worried about the loss of Bruce Dickenson in the Line up. It was undue pressure, because I believe Maiden already showed the world that life without Dickenson existed, and X Factor was great. This album is no Exception. Shorter, with only 8 songs, but full of faster songs (Angel and the Gambler and Future Real), and instant classics still in the set list today (THE CLANSMAN). This work is on par with the stuff relesed on brave new world and or Dance of Death, but some people do not give it credit because of this being Blaze. This is a great album, and was the first Maiden CD format I purchase (also my first enhanced CD), and I am very pleased. Now I own about 3 versions of this album, and it makes regular turns in my play cycle. Check this out, you will not be dissapointed.
SHORTER THAN THE X FACTOR. BLAZE BAYLEY SOUNDS MORE COMFORTABLE IN VIRTUAL XI.............................2007-06-22
The "X Factor" was a decent sounding Maiden release with well written songs, that if Bruce Dickinson had sung on would have been a great Maiden cd. Blaze Bayley has a different kind of voice, that most Maiden fans can't adjust to. It's baritone sounding and sounds a little like a lower volumed Ronnie James Dio at times. Blaze is good but not in the hemisphere that of Dio. "Virtual XI" fits more of the sound of Bayleys voice than The "X Factor" did. If Bruce Dickinson had sung on XI it probably would have sounded better but not much better than Blaze, only because as I said XI was written for Blazes voice. I like "Virtual XI" better than "The X Factor" I believe Blaze Bayley had time to settle in more with the Maiden. "Virtual XI" sounds smoother than "The X Factor" and Blaze sounds more comfortable. "Virtual XI" has some great songs on it. "Futureal" "The Angel and the Gambler" "Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger" and of course the best song in the Blaze Maiden era "The Clansman". "Virtual XI" is nice and short at 8 songs-- 53min.-14sec. long were as the X Factor was a whopping 71min.- 7sec. long. The shorter XI is the right time length for a Maiden Bayley cd, not to long, not to short. "Virtual XI" is an enjoyable short listen that holds your interest, even though most Maiden fans consider the Blaze Bayley, Maiden era, the low point in the Maiden legacy..........
Iron Maiden - Blaze Bailey At The Helm For A Decent Release.......2007-05-21
"Virtual XI" was the second Maiden studio album following the departure of Bruce Dickenson. His replacement Blaze Bailey takes over the vocal duties on this and the previous album, "The X Factor" to mixed reviews. Bailey's voice is not bad, but it is very different from Dickenson's and most Maiden fans could never quite get past that fact. He sings much lower in general than Bruce does so the soaring high notes that Maiden is known for are just not in Bailey's repertoire. A lot of Maiden fans rate this as the band's weakest album, and indeed it does not stand up to the band's classics, but I still think it is a decent listen and enjoy it for what it is. The twin guitars of Jannik Gers and Dave Murray are in full force throughout the album, and musically most of it is solid. On the other hand some of the songs seem to be long just to be long with repeated choruses and riffs that go on and on. Being a fan of progressive rock I have no problem with lengthy epics, but for some of these tracks there just does not seem to be much point. Some of the albums highlights include "Futereal", "The Clansman", "The Angel And The Gambler", "Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger", and the ballad "Como Estais Amigos". In the end this is a decent Maiden album. There are about a dozen other ones that I would buy before this one, but for the Maiden collector this is worth picking up.
Listen to it again and again..........2007-04-17
This album Virtual XI got me back into Iron Maiden after they were getting boring for a while.
another great album, dispite the harsh reviews.......2007-04-06
yes, blaze is still here, and yes i still think he is doing a good job, dispite the daunting task of having to fill Bruces shoes. this album is also a fun and solid release from my all time favorite metal band. Futureal is as solid an opener as you can get, short but catchy. angel and the gambler is another solid song. the clansman is a great epic, one of my favorite songs they have ever made, and probably Blazes best work on vocals. honestly theres not a single song on here that makes me want to say UGGHHH, turn it off, but then again never has maiden made me say that. I honestly enjoy this album better than FOTD and NPFTD but thats just my opinion. no blaze isn;t as good as bruce. but he still rocks. people will always complain when there is change. Heck people are hating on Janick Gers, just cause he took adrians place back in 90. and hes one heck of a guitarist.

Hot hot hot!.......2007-03-10
Not all the scenarios/tracks are so appealing to me, but the ones that *are* really, REALLY are. Not for minors, obviously; very explicit language and sexual content. A fairly wide variety of scenarios in here, so if you're looking for sexy listening material, you're likely to find it here. The last track is a bit shocking in that it's a consensual encounter between a brother and sister, but I only hesitate a little to say that it's one of the hottest on the disc! Highly recommended.

Album Description
When Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert united for a series of concerts at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall in 1983, it was an historic intersection between two generations of fearless topical folksingers and songwriters. The collaboration between Gilbert (a former member of The Weavers) and Near (a peace activist and feminist music pioneer) sent a wave of excitement through the folk/peace/feminist circles in the US. These women voiced the work, faith, humor and complexities of the social change movement afoot.
The weekend of shows was recorded and distilled into "Lifeline," which subsequently became one of Near's best-selling records and a milestone in contemporary folk and women's music. Reissued by Appleseed and retitled "Lifeline Extended," the original 16 songs on "Lifeline" expand into a remastered 2-CD set - 23 songs plus the inclusion of some wonderful onstage banter. The material, carefully retrieved from the deteriorating master tapes, includes Weavers' standards like "Goodnight Irene" and "Pastures of Plenty" as well as Near originals that have become anthems for the left, such as "No More Genocide" and "Singing for Our Lives." Near and Gilbert also honor other political songwriters, performing "Biko" by Sweet Honey in the Rock founder Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon; "Two Good Arms," Charlie King's song about the martyred Sacco and Vanzetti, "Kid's Song" by Ferron, and more. In keeping with their mutual theatrical roots, Holly and Ronnie break out of any traditional definition of folk music by including a surprising and delightful array of show tunes and pop standards, including "Stormy Weather," "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Lucky to Be Me." Ronnie performs a brilliant character piece entitled "Chairman of the Board," which, coupled with Holly's haunting version of Brecht/Weill's "Army Song" from "The Three Penny Opera," leaves the audience in a chilled, breathless silence.

An Absolute Treasure..........2005-04-26
Like one of the other reviewers who commented on this album, I had nearly worn out my cassette tapes of these songs. I was thrilled to see they had been re-released on CD and especially happy that additional material was included in the new release. I purchased a video documentary several years ago called "Wasn't That a Time". It was about the Weavers (a folk group with which Ronnie Gilbert sang in the fifties) and their journey through the McCarthy era and beyond blacklisting. That documentary chronicled, I believe, the first duet that Ronnie Gilbert and Holly Near sang - and the chemistry they demonstrated as they sang on camera is guaranteed to raise goosebumps in even the most jaded viewer. Since then, Gilbert and Near have proven to be mesmerizing, funny, and absolutely in synch in their performances. Don't pass this album by - you won't be sorry you purchased it!
Astonishing.......2004-03-22
When Holly Near came together with Ronnie Gilbert for the concert that became "Lifeline", the two of them produced an album of nearly unparalleled strength and power. It may be an album of anthems for the left, as the Amazon review says, but I think it's more of an album of anthems for the heart. "Singing for Our Lives" is in particular a song about HIV/AIDS, which at the time of the recording was ignored by the Alzheimer's-riddled mind of Ronald Reagan, and there has never been a more powerful song: "We are a gentle, angry people, and we are singing, singing for our lives." I am so glad to see that the album has been re-released on CD, 'cause I've worn my tape out. Holly Near is the high priestess of lesbian music, and Ronnie Gilbert is a legend. What more could anyone ask for?
A great performance, a great recording and a great reissue........2002-12-01
If you think you might have the REMOTEST interest in Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, The Weavers, or this kind of folk music, you will love this recording.
My cherished copy of this on LP hasn't been available for years. This 2-CD set improves on the LP in every way.
What I can't get over, listening to this music again, is what a really, REALLY exceptional performance it is. When Pete Seeger and Arlo Guthrie sing "together" (to take another intergenerational pair) I always have the felt that the collaboration is casual and perhaps not very intensively rehearsed.
But when Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert sing, I hear two very accomplished singers with two strong voices, completely different in sound, yet blending perfectly... just singing their hearts out, holding nothing back, and perfectly _in tune_ both musically and emotionally.
The live recording captures the excitement and involvement of the moment, and the intense, sincere cheering and applauding of the mostly-female audience.
Wow.
The original LP, which hasn't been available for years, contained a total of 15 tracks running 53 minutes. This 2 CD-set contains of 23 tracks and 88 minutes of music. The CD includes nine tracks which did not appear on the LP, every one a worthy addition: "Starting Out Fine," "The Right Time," "Kid's Song," "Women's Medley," "I Cried," "Lucky To Be Me," "Army Song/Chairman of the Board," "Family Promise," and "Singing With You." One song on the LP, "Gracias A La Vida", is omitted from the CD.
It is especially good to have Ronnie Gilbert's "Army Song." The song is from Brecht and Weill's _The Threepenny Opera_ but the track is actually a short theatrical monologue which, as I write this, seems regrettably apropos.
I played this for the first time on my car player, and track 5, "Two Good Arms," happened to be playing just as I passed the dome of the courthouse in Dedham where Sacco and Vanzetti received their unfair trail. Perhaps I unconsciously knew this when I put the CD in, but I'll take my synchronicity where I can find it: it was very moving.
"Hay Una Mujer Desaparecida" sent shivers down my spine. "Harriet Tubman" made me want to stand up and cheer. "The Activity Room" is just plain _nice_.
I am glad the lifeline of this recording has been extended, and I wish a happy and "extended lifeline" to Holly Near, Ronnie Gilbert, and everyone who captured this wonderful moment, first in vinyl and now in polycarbonate.

+1/2 -- Moving, original acoustic country-blues.......2006-04-05
This Atlanta-based singer/songwriter/guitarist writes and plays songs that find a "connection between Muddy Waters and Hank Williams." He's not the first to combine acoustic country and blues, but his folksy lyrics and old-timey tinged voice add flavors of artists such as Loudon Wainwright III, Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Leon Redbone to the usual battery of blues influences. Backed by acoustic bass and the occasional harmonica, Sheffield's picking (replete with ragtime inflections) and soulful Southern vocals provide the album's musical focus. After a half-dozen albums, this is his first national release, and the eleven originals and two covers (including a reading of Tom Waits' "Invitation to the Blues") stand upon timeless blues progressions. Sheffield's acoustic playing and dynamic vocalizing will draw you right in. 4-1/2 stars, if allowed fractional ratings. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

Handsome and inventive music, if not entirely convincing........2006-10-06
Peter Eotvos has been a composer from the beginning of his music studies, but his work with Stockhausen in the 1960s and his wide conducting work since then has overshadowed his own material. Here we get three orchestral works that serve as a fairly representative introduction to his work, and the first two are conducted by the composer himself. The spatial explorations of his music (evident even in a stereo recording) show a clear debt to Stockhausen, but the prominent use of cimbalom--performed here by Marta Fabian--is a Hungarian touch.
"Atlantis" (1995), a setting of Sandor Weores' poem "Nema zene" for boy soprano, baritone, cimbalom, orchestra and electronics, is by no means a simple vocal work. Weores' poem is dissected into brief snippets (somewhat like the soprano's libretto in Boulez's "Pli selon pli"), and overall the instrumental sonorities are in the spotlight. Its three movements encompass wide shifts in form, from deep bass and brass fanfares to an ostinato on high percussion. The most general sound, however, is a general ambience evoking the ocean deep. Electronics are used in the work, but only sparingly until the very last notes, where the ambience is broken by a rush of electronic sounds that will snap one out of any watery reverie.
The title of "Psychokosmos" for cimbalom and orchestra (1993) refers back to Eotvos' first piece, "Kosmos" for piano, written during Gagarin's space flight. Here, however, the landscape is that of the human soul, not the vastness of space. The quality of recording is noticeably lesser here than in the other two pieces, and I'm hezitant to judge the piece. "Shadows" (1995) is written for a smaller ensemble, and is a sort of concerto for flute and clarinet (here performed by Dagmar Becker and Wolfgang Meyer respectively). The juxtaposition of a flute with a reed-based instrument is popular--Ligeti's "Double Concerto" is based on the concept--but adds a new twist. The two soloists are amplified slightly, with the sound then projected out some distance from the orchestra. Not entirely audible on a CD recording, true, but luckily the musical material is generally strong enough to satisfy even if the full gimmickry is missing.
Eotvos' music has never grabbed me as much as that of various other modern composers--neither has Stockhausen's, perhaps the links between the two would appeal to fans of Karlheinz. Plus, I'm not too happy with BMC's packaging. There notes on the pieces are fairly unsubstantial, and the design of the second printing is less handsome than that of the first. Nonetheless, this is handsomely crafted music, and the performances, by WDR Cologne on the first piece and SWF Baden-Baden on the latter two, is powerful. If you like this disc, be sure to get the seventh DVD in the "Juxtapositions" series of modern-classical documentaries. Alongside coverage of Gyorgy Kurtag is an hour-long documentary on Eotvos that covers his entire career and gives context to the latter two pieces here.
Eotvos shows off his credentials as a major composer.......2003-11-20
This disc features excellent performances of three works by the Hungarian Peter Eotvos, once a member of Karlheinz Stockhausen's performing group, now much in demand both as the composer of--amongst other things--the Chekhov-based opera Three Sisters, and as a very fine conductor of contemporary music (and, more recently, of Beethoven).
Atlantis is a large-scale dramatic work for boy soprano, baritone, cimbalom, synthesisers and orchestra, based on poetry by Sandor Weores--a poet also extensively set by Ligeti. It is a three movement work written on a grand scale, with Eotvos' orchestral writing extremely graphic and gestural. (The composer uses ten percussionists amongst the very large orchestra.) Each of the three movements becomes more tense and sinister as it progresses, then closes with an intimate tapestry of themes evoking lost Transylvanian folk music, played by a small group of solo strings. However, in the finale, the ominous music returns, ushering in a colossal electroacoustic climax as the city of Atlantis sinks beneath the waves.
Psychokosmos is a sixteen-minute work for cimbalom and orchestra. It cannot be truly regarded as a concerto, as the solo part is very much integrated with the orchestral writing, which ranges from chamber-music-like intimacy to fierce, aggressive tuttis. It is a dramatic, well-structured and highly effective piece.
Possibly the best music on this disc comes in the final work, Shadows, a miniature double concerto for flute, clarinet and chamber ensemble. This work is full of delicate, melodic writing and telling detail, even if some of the spatial effects (in live performances, the ensemble is scattered across the stage) cannot come off fully on a recording.
This is an important disc, as Eotvos has grown greatly in stature as a composer in recent years, and this appears to be the only available recording of Atlantis and Psychokosmos (Eotvos has recorded Shadows on the Kairos label, though I marginally prefer Zender's performance here). A tendency towards a "kinder, gentler modernism" has become increasingly obvious over the last 20 years (obvious examples include Lutoslawski, and more recently Magnus Lindberg), and works like these put Eotvos at the forefront of this trend.

Product Description
On her melodically rich and exuberantly rocking debut effort, "Everybody's Girl," the award-winning singer, songwriter and guitarist displays a spirit that's both timeless and up-to-date. Tracks such as "Superwoman," "Water in Your Hands," "The One Who Got Away," the award winning track "She" and her first single "Used Black Cars" are more incisive examinations of relationships, while "Seize the Moment" champions the benefits of doing just what the title says. And who can't relate to the sentiment expressed in the title -- and the lyrics -- of "I Just Wanna Be Happy?" Then there's "In Between Poses," Foster's personal favorite on "Everybody's Girl" and an emotional lynch pin for the entire album. Her frankness -- heartfelt and forthright, but never cloying -- are, in fact, the hallmark of Foster's songwriting. That philosophy is displayed throughout "Everybody's Girl," which takes events and lessons from Foster's own experience and transcribes them into universal sentiments.
