Lush, sweeping, painstakingly produced, and often terribly sad, the music of British duo Lighthouse Family is simply gorgeous. Whether one digs the pair's insistence on manicuring every element of their sound, there can be little debate that Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu craft pop melodies that are Bacharachian in their grandeur. Whatever Gets You Through the Day, the pair's third album, carries on the tradition; the musician credits take up half a page in the CD insert, and it sounds like it. The majestic, bigger-than-life "End of the Sky" takes a full orchestral treatment, while "(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One"--borrowing from both Nina Simone and U2--reaches its crescendo with a full-tilt gospel choir. It's impressive but also a tough act to follow, and the disc's second half feels somewhat sluggish. Still, the haunting beauty of comparatively low-key songs like "Run" and "Happy"--which nevertheless feature prominent strings and, like all the other songs, Baiyewu's chocolaty voice--qualify Whatever Gets You Through the Day as a modern suite worth investigating. --Kim Hughes

Hey!!!.......2007-05-21
I was in a Virgin Record Megastore on Gulf Rd. in Kuwait, when a young Arab man said to me, "Hey, you want to hear something cool?" and thus began my love affair with 'The Lighthouse Family.' I can remember taking this album (I mean CD; you can pretty much guess my age) home and listening to it over and over again. I just love their smooth, soothing sound. A well-known British contemporary group, Lighthouse really hasn't been discovered in the US yet. It's a shame too, because I think they'd attract a loyal audience. Tunde Baiyweu's voice sounds like a human saxaphone. Although this may be their best work, it's not my favorite of their albums, but it is one of my favorite overall albums. Pick this up and get hooked!
You Always Want What You Haven't Got..........2005-08-04
And you should be wanting this album if you don't own it already.
A brilliant follow on from their earlier 2 albums, with plenty of new material in the unique style of the Lighthouse Family.
Highlights include "(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One" and "You Always Want What You Haven't Got". This brings me to add that U2's 'One', arguably the greatest song ever written, is beautifully integrated into track 3 of this masterful album.
A must have album for fans and the like.
Addicted!.......2005-05-13
I never thought I'd get addicted to this! I'm usually into rock - listen to Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Toto, etc.. but there's some magic about Lighthouse Family. They suck you in without you realizing it! I can't get past the first 3 tracks, they are so good. Its somehow gotten into my system, so I keep listening to them over and over again. I don't want to pigeonhole music into categories, but I always love music that makes you feel good. And this is one of the best feel-good albums. I also loved Postcards from Heaven, another great album.
Beautifull.......2004-02-26
I don't know what I like best the appealing/interesting text e.g. "You Always Want What You Haven't Got" or the feel good music. However my girlfriend and I enjoy this CD as much as the other two Lighthouse CDs. Maybe the best is that the songs get better and better as more often you listen to their music. Besides that I have a lot of friends that like the CD too.
I suppose Lex from Switzerland doesn't understand English otherwise he would not write such an incompetent review.
Totally commercial.......2004-01-02
This music was made for making lot's of money. That is obvious. Although it is perfectly produced, you got to take a closer look. I always wondered why people liked it so much. The singer absolutely can't sing. He hardly ever pitches the note, sings flat and without any emotion or vibrato in his voice. This is disgusting to me. And the music is boring. Slick stuff for Yuppies.
But I guess if music is that perfectly produced, people just take it as a gentle elevator/toilet muzak (which is noise to me).

Status Quo Just Keep On Delivering.......2007-06-28
With WHATEVER YOU WANT, Status Quo deliver yet another great album, which we can now hear on CD in full digital glory. The band's sound and style haven't changed since 1971, but that's all right, because, as the old saying goes, if it isn't broken, don't fix it. The songs are all wonderful here, and, as on all of the band's albums since PILEDRIVER, the pace never lets up and never lets you down. The fact that founding members Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt believe that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia since 2005 for drug-smuggling was unjustly convicted makes WHATEVER YOU WANT an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.
Great Album, Great Sound Quality, Great Remastering!!!.......2006-04-21
While the music contained on "WYW" album might not be some of Quo's best, my review is mainly for the remastering and sonic quality. The only people on the planet who may ever read this are diehard Status Quo fans anyway! You already know all about the music. This review goes out to the Status Quo "fanatics" who are contemplating dropping some cash on this purchase. Do it!! Tim Turan has done a fabulous job with all the Status Quo remasters and "WYW" is no exception. The sound is fantastic!! Like I mentioned earlier, "WYW" may not be one of the "Frantic Four's" best moments (on par with "Hello", "Quo" & "Piledriver"), but it does contain one of their all-time best songs "Whatever You Want"; and the sound quality on past releases (even the vinyl) did not really do the album any favors. The remastering job here does just the opposite, it actually makes the album better. I can write about brightness, sonic nuances, warmth & tone until I'm "blue for you" in the face and still just be scratching the surface.
So enough already, just add this to cart now. You might as well buy all the Status Quo remasters now and save on shipping. You're eventually going to buy them all anyway, so now's as good as time as any!
***BTW*** Hit zShops for some really excellent prices on all the Quo remasters!!!!
Finally ! One of Quo's best albums on CD.......2005-03-10
To me, "Whatever you want" is one of the best Quo albums ever. I was extremely disappointed, when "Phonogram" released this album as part of their "Back to Back" series, omitting one of the best tracks : "High Flyer". But "Universal" finally set the record straight and the remastering (as it is with this whole series of recent Quo re-issues) is brilliant. The album sounds great, and the bonus tracks add a nice touch to an already perfect album :
"Hard Ride" is another one of those excellent Alan Lancaster songs, while the demo versions of "Another Game in Town" or Rearrange" are definitely worth listening to (however, all these tracks were already released on the "Rockers Rollin'" box set). But it's the original 10 songs that will stand the test of time. Fast rockers like "Shady Lady" and "Runaway", classic Quo like "Whatever you want", "Who asked you", "Your smiling face" or "High Flyer", and the brilliant single "Living on an Island" all got 5-Stars on my iPod. But again, there is not one single weak track on this CD - so go out and buy it !
Thank you Amazon for offering this through your import section.... since there is no official release planned in the USA.

DB's best album.......2002-08-29
A lot of DB fans didn't like this album -- a huge departure from the band's early stuff -- but "Whatever You Say, Say Nothing" is just brilliant, particularly "Bethlehem's Gate." This song alone should put frontman Ricky Ross among the pantheon of rock's greatest songwriters (Springsteen, Young, Dylan, Browne, et al). And "Fall So Freely Down" -- how many rockers have written an edgy but stirringly beautiful song about childbirth? Don't get me wrong: I loved the first albums -- "Raintown" and "Fellow Hoodlums" especially. But there's something about this album that just slaps the soul silly with raw beauty.
gian's opinion.......2000-06-08
this cd must be listened to to be believed !
Good but moving away from what they did best.......1999-10-26
I would put Deacon Blue's sound in with other groups such as 80's EBTG, Prefab Sprout, etc. I fell into them in 1991 while living in Germany. I picked up the hard to find double CD 'Ohh Las Vegas and that was love at first listen. They are melodic, treble filled with poetic words to strenghten the sound. Whatever you say... was apparently their last offering and it had that big america production rock and roll sound and it lost some or most of that musty closeness that earlier works had. If you can find it grab Our Town their greatest hits and if you like this, go back and find all their early stuff. Bands don't sound like this anymore because the world is a changing. My life is better for having listend to Deacon Blue. The song Dignity, actually finds a way to bless the word musically. Unreal

Customer Reviews:
Tammin proves she's got the talent..........2005-05-16
A multi-platinum single is always a daunting task to follow-up, but Tammin has done it exceptionally well. Rather than remaining in the pop genre to continue her success without trial (as Delta Goodrem and Kylie did before breaking away from mainstream pop), Tammin attempts a Ballad-like uplifting and inspirational song to test her popularity. Although the tune may be described as sultry, the lyrical base it feeds from is nothing short of brilliant. Though the second single has not faired (as) well on the charts, this is to be expected as Ballads rarely make the Australian top ten (unless you've been a contest on idol [but not necessarily the winner]).
In short, Tammin has done exceptionally well on her second release and her album will be very much a highlight of this year's Australian pop scene.
