5 out of 5 stars Unmissable!.......2005-06-13

Perhaps you should remove one star or two for production values, which are not state of the art; the sound feels very thin, missing quite a lot in body. The playing, however, is the very, very best. The world will never get a string quartet with such an understanding of Mozart! The tempos are generally brisk, but it never sounds hurried. I am used to the Quartetto Italiano on this stuff, and that played rather slowly, wonderfully as such, but slowly. The Budapest Quartet is playing quickly, but it always feels easy, elegant and relaxed.
The nerve on the quintet K. 516 is very exiting. In spite of being recorded by the mid 40ies, I've never wanted any other recordings of the quintets.
The 'Haydn' quartets are recorded by the mid 50ies, but here I would like some better sound. I've preferred the Quartetto Italiano for almost ten years; know I only listen to the Budapest. I guess that my mind now is able to add the sound which is missing on the recording.
My five stars because you should not miss this - and in some years this collection perhaps will be out of print...

5 out of 5 stars A knockout bargain.......2005-05-22

How can I review the greatest string quartet ever? The recording is quite decent, a remastering of LPs that were already excellent. Don't think scratchy reissue.

And the performance? My god, these guys are total quartetness--I just listened to the Dissonant Quartet, and there is a rhythmic thrust beyond others, no matter when recorded. The proof is in the astounding gasps--there's no more accurate term--in the last movement. There may have been equally good performances that I'll never know because they were early 20th century, but thanks there are these great performances that got the benefit of good recording.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's First, Quite Possibly, Best, Beethoven Symphony Cycle.......2007-05-23

For those wondering why Leonard Bernstein was such an important, exciting conductor, there's no better introduction than these fine early stereo recordings he made with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Critics have celebrated these as exciting, revelatory accounts, almost as memorable as those from George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra and Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker, which were recorded almost at the same time as Bernstein's. The only reason why I'd give higher recommendations to Szell's and Karajan's cycles lies primarily with the acoustical qualities of the recording studios (In Karajan's case the converted Berlin church where he made most of his 1960s and 1970s recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker was sonically the best at that time.) and the overall quality of the musicianship of their respective ensembles, which I would have to rate slightly higher than the New York Philharmonic's. The two finest recordings from Bernstein's New York Philharmonic cycle are those with of the 3rd and 5th symphonies which remain two of the most dramatic recordings of these pieces that I've heard. Overall, I think this set deserves favorable comparisons with his mid 1970s Deutsche Grammophon cycle recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker during live performances at Vienna's Musikverein; the only exceptional differences are the slightly warmer acoustics of the orchestra and concert hall in the 1970s cycle, and Bernstein's usage of slightly quicker tempi and smaller orchestral forces. If you're looking for an alternative traditional Beethoven symphony cycle, then you won't miss by acquiring this early Bernstein cycle.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's early Beethoven makes an enticing bargain.......2007-02-20

I wonder if Leonard Bernstein was the first American conductor to record a complete Beethoven cycle? He must have been, and two of these performances--the Eroica and the Fifth Sym. -- were made famous as vehicles for LB's television talks in the Fities and Sixties. Millions of post-war kids learned from them and I'm one. In retrospect Bernstein's Beethoven wasn't as propulsive and exciting as memory made them. But these performances are full-boded, direct, and satisfying. Perhaps the authority of Karajan and the Berlin Phil. isn't present, but even so, Sony is offering the cycle as a tremendous bargain, all the more so if you buy it used at Amazon Marketplace. Several overtures are thrown in, along with Isaac Stern's excellent account of the Violin Concerto (conductor and soloist are in sympathy, as always, but this is one of their poorest sounding recordings, unfortunately).

LB used a big orchestra for his Beethoven, and the Columbia Records engineers caught them in a big, reverberant space. If you want to hear this music on a modest scale or with historical touches, lok elsewhere. After he decamped to Europe, Bernstein made a second Beethoven cycle with the Vienna Phil. that's leaner, faster, but somewhat lacking in the excitment of discovery that one heard the first time around.

    5 out of 5 stars A Musical French Connection.......2006-12-17

Whatever wrong-headed notions we Americans may have about the people of France these days (and God knows we have PLENTY), one thing that cannot be denied is that country's history of giving us great composers over the centuries. This release on the Philips Eloquence label of music by two great Frenchmen, to wit Georges Bizet and Camille Saint-Saens, is proof.

The recording begins with Bizet's celebrated Symphony In C Major, a work he had composed in 1855, but which the world did not hear about until 1931, nearly sixty years after his death. In many ways, this work is Bizet's approach to the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert, especially in the relatively modest amount of orchestral players the piece requires. The symphony is then followed by the composer's brilliantly orchestrated 1871 piece "Jeux D'Enfants" (Children's Games). Both it and the C Major Symphony receive excellent performances here, made in 1977 by an orchestra most often remembered for its Mahler and Bruckner--the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, led by its longtime music director Bernard Haitink.

The recording concludes with Saint-Saens towering Symphony No. 3, sub-titled the "Organ" Symphony because of the very prominent use of the organ within, as a sort of deep underlining in its second movement and as a showcase instrument in the blazing final movement. Dozens of recordings of this work are out there, including recordings made in the late 1950s by conductors like Charles Munch and Paul Paray; and this 1984 recording, made by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and its then-Music Director Edo De Waart and featuring organist Jean Guillou, joins that crowded field through the sheer sonic brilliance bought by the Philips engineers, and which, like Haitink's Bizet recordings, have been finely remastered for a new generation of listeners.

Anyone with a taste for mercurial French classical music of the mid-to-late 19th century should immediately snap up this recording. It is well worth the search.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein was truly inspired that recording day!.......2006-02-12

In spite the fact Charles Munch reached a unequaled peak with the 104th Symphony, Scherchen, Beecham and Colin Davis share deserved honors, I must recognize the devoted inspiration and sublime charm gotten by Bernstein those days with the New York Philharmonic.

Leonard Bernstein achieved an overwhelming artistic feat with the Symphony No. 97 of Joseph Haydn. You won ` t get another similar performance with such burden of stamina, imperial breath and supreme expressive elegance.

Forget about any other 97th. You just listen and then, I guess, you will agree with me.

5 out of 5 stars Splendid Haydn from Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic.......2005-09-13

I have heard Bernstein's recordings of Haydn's "Paris" symphonies with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra in a separate Sony collection and have no doubt that these are splendid too. Critics and music lovers alike have tended to minimize Bernstein's strengths as a conductor of Classical music, overlooking his fine conducting of Haydn and Mozart and praising instead his advocacy of Mahler's symphonies and the work of great 20th Century American composers, most notably Aaron Copeland. But I truly treasure Bernstein's excellent conducting of Haydn's and Mozart's scores, which are as fine as the best I have heard from the likes of Herbert von Karajan, Karl Bohm or Sir Colin Davis. And speaking of Sir Colin Davis's excellent Phillips recordings of the London symphonies, I have no doubt that Bernstein's are equally superb. If I am critical of Bernstein's New York Philharmonic Orchestra recordings at all, it is only for technical reasons that they lack the expressive richness of sound I have heard in his later Deutsche Grammophon recordings, most notably those with the Vienna Philharmonic and Concertgebouw orchestras.

    5 out of 5 stars An Addendum.......2004-02-19

Upon further inspection of this set, buyers should be aware that some of the discs are mislabeled. CD3 is actually CD4, CD4 is actually CD5 and CD5 is actually CD3. And it's not just my set as I have confirmed the same problem with friends who own it. The music is still beautiful, it's just in the wrong order.

5 out of 5 stars Missed the "Royal Editions," Get This!.......2004-01-28

This five-disc French Import from the "Columbia Legends" series collects all of Leonard Bernstein's performances of Haydn's 12 "London" Symphonies, originally recorded between 1958 and 1975. This music was most recently available in Sony's "Royal Edition" series as two separate volumes. In case you missed one or both of those aforementioned titles (I only previously owned 100-104), this set is the one to get now as the "Royals" have been out-of-print for a few years. Bernstein's accounts of Symphonies Nos. 100-104 were my first, so they will always hold a special place in my heart. But even as I have expanded my collection to include acclaimed performances by Dorati, Davis, Jochum and Beecham among others, the Bernsteins still stand out for their power and precision. For Symphonies 93-99 I was reared on George Szell, but Bernstein's renditions are every bit as good. Even though I should have gotten all these Symphonies years ago, they were certainly worth the wait.

He informs you that this set is not the legenday recordings of the last 6 syms made with the Columbia on Sony (on vinyl it was the Columbia label, now bought by Sony).
With with recent news last night that M Jackson may be selling his Sony recording holdings, worth $1billion, we may soon see the Walter/Columbia recordings released eventually.
Its the Columbia SO set you want to own.
I got my cd set from a used dealer in england 3 yrs ago, its on Sony/germany, release 1989.
See my comments on the Bohm/Berlin complete.

    I'm back with another comment.
I have just completed a compare between Bohm and Walter/Columbia.
I have to give the nod to the Bohm, ....but then there are times I give the nod to Walter/Columbia...hummm, as with all Mozart, he is Hermes par excellent, and that mercurial quality is reflected in mere mortal attempts at capturing atht genius from another realm.

Original Recordings of the Legendary Polish Pianist and Composer.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Truly amazing!.......2003-10-09

Perhaps one of the best pianists of the century plays the music that saved his life...

Highlights are the Bach recording, which is thrilling and brilliantly played, and the two (count them!) recordings of Chopin's nocturne. Played with tons of emotion--keep in mind this particular piece saved his life--the last recording especially is truly heart-rending.

For anybody who's ever heard a piano and liked it, or for any classical music person, this is an absolute must. I listen to it over and over, and never get tired of it. It's unfortunate he didn't record CDs and CDs and more CDs of stuff I could go out and buy. You need this CD.

Even if, like me, you have yet to see the movie.

And a special thanks to the Polish radio people, who salvaged these for our immense delight in listening!

    This is an 'enhanced' cd.

CD includes a video of Szpilman performing Chopin's Nocturne C# Minor (1980).

Insert is full of photos with a brief life history.

Another monument in the history of recording, this is the only set of Haydn symphonies that ever reached completion, and the performances are generally so good as to bear comparison with many of the best individual performances. The music itself is astounding--107 symphonies, all of them good, many of them shattering masterpieces. Haydn invented the Classical style, which, along with the contributions from his friend Mozart and his student Beethoven, became the standard by which all future music was measured. At a budget price, owning this set is like being able to have your own authentic copy of the "Mona Lisa" for a couple hundred dollars. Awesome! --David Hurwitz

    5 out of 5 stars A superb milestone.......2007-05-01

Antal Dorati's pioneering, complete cycle of Haydn's symphonies is a milestone in recording history. Here it is incarnated on 33 CDs. What you get are outstanding, superb performances. The orchestra - Hungarica Philharmonia - is just wonderful, and the interpretations are remarkable in their attention to detail and structure. In addition, the Decca analogue sound has never been better than here. The booklet is also excellent.

Dorati's pioneering efforts included also the Haydn operas, which recently have been collected and released in two boxes from Philips, and the 24 Minuets (Decca).

What about the competition, then? Adam Fischer's Haydn project on Nimbus offers also a complete cycle, now on Brilliant Classics at a bargain price for a very big box with 33 CDs and a brief booklet. Well, for one thing, Dorati's set is the classic cycle. Further, Dorati's readings are less extravagant than Fischer's - and in my view preferable. The sound is also better in the earlier Dorati set: a warm analogue sound in contrast to Fischer's chilly, all-digital sound, which also is very uneven. But Fischer's Haydn is less expensive: you can get his cycle for less than $100 from second-hand dealers. Despite that, Dorati's cycle should be your first choice. Moreover, if shelf space is an issue, the Dorati box is one inch slimmer and a half inch less tall.

Furthermore, there are selections of symphonies from Jochum (DG) and Scherchen (DG), of which I hold the latter in higher esteem due to its idiosyncrasy. In retrospect, however, Dorati's complete cycle has a unique classic status and is as such unchallenged. Thus I warmly recommend it as a part of the foundation of your collection in addition to Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, and Mozart symphony cycles, because this is delightful music that will last for a lifetime on a desert island.

5 out of 5 stars For the sheer pleasure of them all...........2006-11-11

In the mid seventies, my father purchased all of what had been released of this cycle on vinyl LP. As vinyl goes, the London discs were first rate, and a prized possession.

I lost the vinyl collection during a move in the mid 80's. It was an emotional impact; I had cherished them as a child, and as a gift, irreplaceable.

This release is true to my memory, and now I have the entire cycle.

I've performed many of these in various orchestras and loved them all.

There's a fresh energy to the performances, and an elegance to the collection quite rare and delightful.

As a set, it's actually quite affordable considering it's under $6 per disc, or under $2 per symphony.

5 out of 5 stars Antal Dorati's Claim To Fame.......2005-10-14

If it wasn't for this massive recording project, Hungarian-born conductor Antal Dorati would not have been acknowledged as a first-classconductor at a time when such giants as Leopold Stokowski, Herbert Von Karajan, George Solti and Leonard Bernstein were still conducting. Dorati is an exemplary exponent of classical music, which is also to say Classical Era music (1750-1800). Nevertheless, even if Dorati has a superb touch for this kind of repertoire, he is equally as brilliant in 20th century music and Romantic Era music, as his Tchaikovsky symphonies and ballets have proven. At an expensive price, this recording is still worth it. It's a legend in recorded history of classical music. No other conductor dared to take on such a monumental project as to record all 100 and plus symphonies of Franz Joseph Haydn, the composer who by definition began the movement of Classical Era music. It was Mozart, who was his younger friend, that is better known today for this kind of music and moreover, musicologists believe he refined and perfected the style. But don't underestimate Papa Haydn. His music is beautiful, bursting with energy and lightness, elegance, warmth and melodic harmony that is so refreshing to hear especially in our own time which is full of stress.

Haydn's symphonies are not all similar sounding. Each symphony was unique, like the hand prints on people. Yes, at times they do tend to sound the same, possibly because so many of them were in the key of D. Nevertheless, they are music of individual merit. As his symphonies approached its later years and maturation, Haydn employed slights of ear and orchestral innovations that were considered new and bold in his time. The "surprise" in his "Surprise Symphony" is a thunderous "bang" in fortissimo by the orchestra after a melody that is rather bland and sleepy (which to me sounds like "Mary Had A Little Lamb"). The "Clock" Symphony is measured in a kind of "tick-tock" beat and is very very elegant and memorable, as it conjures up the image of a Rococco clock or a clock museum. The Paris Symphonies are an Austrian-German man's "trip" to Paris and his interpretation of French music. It sounds nothing at all like French music at the time although at times it nearly slips into the slow grandeur of the music of Baroque master Jean Baptiste Lully. The London Symphonies are among his best, with a kind of majesty and pomp typically associated with English royalty. If you listen carefully it's in the music. A similar thing occurs in the music to the "Oxford" Symphony. Haydn had visited Oxford to teach music and was awarded a doctorate. He composed music for that special event and the music is brooding, intellectual and somehow very very English.

Antal Dorati and his formidable Hungarica Philharmonica is at their very best in this set. The sound is crisp, gleaming and unbeatable. Even if you get the individualized sets of these symphonies, you will be treating yourself to some top-notch classical music. A must have for fans of Antal Dorati.

5 out of 5 stars A major milestone in recorded music, stunning achievement.......2005-03-29

This complete cycle of the Symphonies of F.J. Haydn heralded a new era in recorded music. Everything about the project was first rate. The sound was among Decca's best. The playing of the little known Philharmonia Hungarica was close to perfect. Dorati's interpretations never disappointed. To top it off, Decca offered the cycle at budget prices and threw in unprecedented notes from H.C. Robbins Landon.

Many would comment "once you've heard one, you've heard them all" when asked about Haydn's vast symphonic output. They could not be more wrong. There isn't a dull symphony or poor performance in the lot. Try such unknowns as #26, or #33, or #51 and #52, to name a few of my lesser known favorites.

Those familiar with Haydn's more well known symphonies, such as the London Symphonies (93-104) were even astonished to find Dorati's performances giving more formidable orchestras and conductors a run for their money.

So what can be said of the set 30 years later?

Everything said earlier still stands, including the original liner notes. Only Graham Johnson's scrupulous notes with his various Hyperion lieder sets surpass Landon's astounding commentary. The digital transfers are from the late 80s, so they are not the best, but still quite serviceable. And the price is still quite reasonable.

Beware, though, that these are not period instruments. Dorati does use "period forces" as much as possible, meaning the number of instruments closely matches what would have been used originally.

So why do I say this set "heralded a new era in recorded music"? Because after the resounding success it enjoyed, many "complete" works projects of similar or greater magnitude got their chance. I doubt we would have any where near the volumes of "complete sets" we now enjoy had it not been for Dorati and Decca's Haydn cycle.

In short, a fabulous set that I would never part with.

5 out of 5 stars Dorati blazed the trail for Haydn interpreters.......2004-11-12

I've owned this complete set of Haydn symphonies for at least a decade or more. While I enjoy period instrument sound and performance practice, you cannot get a complete set on period instruments (I was hoping Hogwood would finish his cycle but I understand it wasn't to be). In all honesty, I think the best period instrument interpretations outdo the modern instrument recordings in sheer energy amd agility, but in respect of modern instruments, Dorati, the pioneer, does an extraordinary job of bringing out the essential flavor and energy that was Haydn's symphonies. I don't like mixing and matching various orchestras and conductors, so buying this 32 CD set gets you all 104+ symphonies in one tidy package. The sound quality is very good considering the times, with a very forward midrange.

5 out of 5 stars best complete sibelius symphonies.......2006-01-30

I bought this set on a hunch that if all Bernstein's Sibelius performances were as good as his Pohjola's Daughter on a compilation disc which I've owned for some time, then the risk of a few pounds was worth it. Well I certainly wasn't disappointed! I listened to all four discs in one session through the night and found that LBs is the best complete Sibelius symphonies set I've ever encountered. Individual symphonies can be equalled by other conductors but as a complete survey this has to be the one, and I'm comparing LB to Karajan (who incidentally never recorded the Third Symphony), Ashkenazy, Maazel, Barbirolli, Paavo Berglund's 3 (!) sets, Colin Davis's RCA set, Rattle and Neeme Jarvi plus individual recordings by several others; altogether I'm comparing LBs 4 discs to about 40 'others'. I would be happy to part with most of the 40 in favour of LB. I won't try to describe any particular performance in detail because I think that any attempt to describe music in words is usually pointless. The one thing I would say though is that like all really successful Sibelius interpretations, LB's take you out of the concert hall and land you straight into the open air and the very nature that inspired this wonderful composer. Symphony No. 1 is as good as any. No. 2 I would prefer Barbirolli on Chesky, but LB is as good as any of the rest. No.3 I slightly prefer Jarvi on BIS, but LB is better in the important slow movement. No. 4 Karajan from the 1960s on DG is my preference but LB is pretty close. LB's No. 5 is fabulous, I can't think of a better version. No. 6 Karajan 1960's DG again, with Sakari on Naxos closely behind, but LB's is still a fine version. No. 7 was a revelation; I can think of no other work which has caused me more problems in trying to find a truly satisfying version in all my 35 years of classical music collecting. You wouldn't believe the number of versions I've heard (and got rid of) of this truly unique work of art! Frankly, in my search I really can't say what I was looking for, like with any music you just know when it's 'right'. Most versions fall completely flat and it seems that very few conductors can turn the printed notes into the magnificent paean to nature that is Sibelius's Seventh. That Sibelius wasn't able to successfully write another symphony after this has never surprised me (thank God that his muse lingered long enough for him to write Tapiola). There is only one Sibelius Seven to place alongside LBs - Paavo Berglund with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, recorded by EMI in the early 70s and never, to my knowledge reissued, except in a Royal Classics full set of the symphonies. The Berglund complete set is very good indeed and it's one I wouldn't want to be without. There's a fresh straightforward unfussy honesty about Berglund's earlier versions which I like very much; his later efforts were not in the same league. As an aside, Berglund's BSO recordings of shorter Sibelius works on EMI are true bargains, as is his unsurpassed world premiere recording of Kullervo (with the BSO) on the same label. As for the Seventh though, I would give a joint 'first prize' to Bernstein NYPO and Berglund BSO; Bernstein for the slightly more rugged, dramatic route; Berglund taking the more serene but with eyes-wide-open-in-wonder approach, but both indispensable. The old CBS recordings have cleaned up nicely under Sony's reissue (thanks Sony)and although not up to 'modern digital standards' that's not necessarily a bad thing! The best recording is of the Fifth - better than any other version, and of the Seventh. Of the others, all are excellent for their age- bold and clear, rather warm and with very little harshness or tape-hiss. In any case I wouldn't for a moment let this put you off buying what is an incredible bargain. One final point,; Phylis Curtin, a soprano I've never encountered before is extremely good in Luonnotar; she really characterizes the narrative like no other soloist I've heard before in this work. It's just a pity that LB forces the music along at a pace which is just too fast. But if you like Sibelius what are you waiting for? Buy this set today.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Sibelius Symphonies!!.......2005-01-02

"The Complete Symphonies" captures definitive interpretations of the seven symphonies by the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius conducted by the late maestro Leonard Bernstein.
Each symphony in this 4-disc set is presented in amazing remastered sound quality displaying full dynamic range and sharpness. The beauty of this music is definitely readily apparent from the opening notes through the very end.
In addition, the CD booklet includes a brief but highly informative essay in which the history behind each symphony is explained in just enough detail to understand its genesis.
All in all, this is a fantastic set of Sibelius's masterful symphonies wonderfully executed by the baton of Mr. Bernstein. Applause also must be given to Sony Music for compiling these symphonies into one complete set. Bravo.
It doesn't get much better than this.
      Highly recommended!!

      4 out of 5 stars A sincere tribute!.......2004-07-08

This set has peak and lows. The second symphony has a hyper romantic approach ; that's its weak point. The third symphony is well built, besides it lacks the nature blow with its wildful force. The first symphony has always been a hazardous for many conductors. It has too much influence from Tchaikovsky ; and Bernstein knows it ; he avoids it , even the reading is warmth.
The best achievements in the set are the four and the sixth . I've never heard a sixth so well made ; the woodwinds , the strings give that atmosphere that demands this complex work. The fourth is unforgettable , but there's a performance of Beecham in the fifties with the Royal Philarmonic literally unique. The seventh is OK, but there are other options.
The fifth is weak , and my favorite versiona are two: Segerstam and Koussevitzki.
Anyway I bought this set eight years ago under The Royal Edition. I recommend you this set , Maazel Vienna , Segerstam and all you can get from Koussevitski.
If you request me by Anthony Collins - London Symphony (out of stock in the most of stores) I must confess, Collins has no equals in the Second .
The best first to me is Victor de Sabata (New York Philarmonic)(See my review about De Sabata)
