Album Description

Limited Edition UK-only pressing of the 2006 album from Emma Bunton (AKA Baby Spice) features three bonus tracks: 'Something Tells Me (Something's Gonna Happen', 'Perhaps Perhaps Perhaps' and Por Favour'. Life In Mono is Emma's most honest album to date, an intimate reflection of Emma's life and loves that reveal more than she was ever expecting. Musically it sounds like a rich pop album even at first listen, with rich orchestral backing, gorgeous harmonies and the sort of chorus' Burt Bacharach could be proud of. It moves from the stunningly tender 'All I Need To Know' to cheeky jazz of 'Undressing You' and the luscious Carpenters style of 'I'm Not Crying Over Yesterday's' . Above all it captures Emma's thoroughly modern take on elegant 60's Pop. Universal.

5 out of 5 stars WOW. This album is FAB baby........2007-06-30

I left this review for a few days so I could give it few listenings.
Free Me was a really great album, which I did not buy until March this year.
When I first listen to it I was blown away, I just did not expect this from Emma.
Now over to Life In Mono, First listening to It did not seem as good as Free Me.
But its a grower Emma has a sweet singing voice, which is pleasant to listen to. All the songs are good, still having the 60s bossa nova sound to most of them. Best tracks are. Life In Mono, Mischievous, He Loves Me Not, I Wasn't Looking, Take Me To Another Town, I'm Not Crying Over Yesterdays, All That You'll Be, and Something Tells Me.
All in all this is a solid album, and is as good as Free Me if not better.
well done Emma for a third fantastic album, and the best so far.
Rating Six stars, yes it really is that good.

5 out of 5 stars Another great release... destined to be ignored in the US.......2007-06-20

Emma has given us another really great 60's influenced pop album. Out of all the Spice Girls, who would have imagined that the one called "Baby Spice" would end up with the most accomplished pop career? She chose substance over commercialism and really hit a home run with pop fans. Why hasn't she been asked to sing the next 007 theme song? Or alteast be a Bond girl in the next film?
All 3 releases have been laid back, and thoroughly enjoyable. I'm happily looking forward to more of the same.

4 out of 5 stars Great follow up!!!.......2007-05-12

Former Spice Girl, Emma Bunton's new album Life in Mono is a great step forward. It follows the same vein as her last album and I would highly recommend it if you loved her first.

4 out of 5 stars Almost a Pop Masterpiece.......2007-04-26

Its really ironic that the most 'untalented' of the Spice Girls bunch would consistently provide us with such good material into the 2000s. Her last album "Free Me" was a classic that still finds plays on my Ipod.

1. If you love 1960s 'girl-group' melodies, you will love this.
2. If you like film-noir, and the soundtracks to the James Bond and Austin Powers series, you will love this.
3. If you like very poppy verse-chorus-verse, you will love this
4. If you're into Bossa Nova, Brazilian beach pop, and a little bit of reggae, you will adore this.

At its best, this sounds like a lost soundtrack to some 1960s French masterpiece by Truffaut. Very "Umbrellas of Cherbourg" but with a lot more zest and pep. You really have to get it and find out what I'm talking about.

The only downside is that the opening track is the weakest here, so many people may be put off. Do get this and discover a fabulous artist you may have neglected until now just because of her "Spice Girls" tag.

To sum up, Emma is a million times more accomplished and a real artist when compared to the remaining Spice Girls. This one album is better than all the others' solo releases combined. Seriously.

4 out of 5 stars The Next Chapter.......2007-03-28

Life In Mono continues in the same vein as Free Me... sort of.

While there are a few tracks with that same sun-drenched bossa nova sound (Mischevious, He Loves Me Not), this is not Free Me II, but the next chapter of Emma's journey. The album opens with a lovely ballad, "All I Need To Know"- gutsy move! Next, the title track is a cover of a song by the group Mono. Where the original was like a dark music box tune, here it's been reworked like a James Bond theme (Anyone else think Ms. Bunton should REALLY do a Bond theme?).

The standouts are "I Wasn't Looking (When I Found Love)" and "Take Me To Another Town", both with catchy melodies and lush cinematic orchestrations. On "Undressing You", and especially the bonus track "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps", Emma shows she can convincingly go from sweetie to seductress in a heartbeat.

As wonderful as Free Me was, Life In Mono is a more mature affair. This is music for grown-ups, for lounging around on lazy Sundays or sultry late nights. Once again, Emma has proved her talent. She has found music that suites her voice perfectly, and she delivers it with sensuality and class- a rarity in today's popular music.

It remains to be seen if this album will be released stateside as Free Me was, and if it will be sucessfully pitched to the American market, which might too easily mistake it for "Easy Listening", which it most certainly is not. Let's keep our fingers crossed. We need more music like this.

5 out of 5 stars There is life beyone the first track..........2007-03-03

I bought the full cd only for the first song that I heard on the tv. It was a trailer for Great Expectations. Never bought the soundtrack. Loved the song. Wanted to hear more of the people who created it. Then something happened... I listened to the rest of it. It's great. Yes, the first song is quite powerful. Other tracks take you on a journey as well. It's a keeper. Still listening to it today. Thanks Mono!!

4 out of 5 stars The Tree-lined Avenue Begins to Fade from View.......2005-02-21

Mono, on the whole, wasn't what I expected and I'm saddened by that fact. I actually heard Life in Mono before I heard anything else by the band and rushed out to by the album (Monico Blues), hoping beyond hope that the whole of the work would be like this song. And it wasn't. In fact, I have to say that I've been disappointed with Mono as a whole since this track. But, what a track.

Honestly, I have to say that I absolutely adore this song. Its haunting and almost surreal, and it evokes imagery within it that makes me feel good. Its atmospherically centering in a right, painting a picture within the wording, and the vocal presence behind it is amazing. Even now, some 8 years after its release, I still feel it when I close my eyes and listen, the track bringing back memories of old loves and old flames and the synthetic prowess that highs and a paintbrush can bring together.
O yeah.

The problem with this single is that it isn't simply the album version of the song. The remixes provided don't do it justice at all, changing the song in ways that actually take away some of the traits it possesses. The Alice Ban Mix slows it down to a minimalist crawl that loops into some sort of electro-house mix, starting the audio snail pace creeping along until the basic beat kicks in, and that's really redundant and fights the vocals. The "Sweat Band Mix" puts way too much beat to the track, giving it some kind of techno spaghetti-western appeal that is anything but appealing if you liked the first track, and I couldn't buy into that. The "Hope" mix is a club sound, bass and remix with the atypical 4x4 beat, and this isn't a cross-genre sound so that doesn't work. Also, the vocals are used as a loop when they are one of the most powerful instruments that the song has to offer. "Bushmaster" suffers alot of what "Sweat Band Mix" does, and it tries to scatter the sound wayyy to much and takes away what was appealing about the song. And the last is simply an instrumental, and the vocals are like a drug in this piece.

All that said, the song is a powerful one and is WELL worth getting your hands on. It has so many "pros" going for it that it powers this cheaply acquired single and might warrant the investment of a few more bucks so you can have the album its off of. Regardless, GET THE SONG.

3 out of 5 stars Life for "Mono".......2004-12-07

"Life in Mono" is perhaps the most enchanting song in Mono's "Formica Blues." It's a pretty, trippy little trip-hop song with a revolving keyboard melody, and wistful lyrics. Sadly, few of the remixes are up to the standards of the original. More often than not, they merely make you wish for the simplicity of Mono's uncluttered sound.

The original album version is the first presented, followed by "Life In Mono - Propellerheads Alice Band Mix," which is has more percussion and bass, and less keyboard magic. "Life In Mono - Propellerheads Sweat Band Mix" is less appealing -- it's funereal and cluttered with sound, losing the actual song somewhere in the heavy production. As a rock song, it's excellent, but not quite a good remix.

"Life In Mono - Lightfoot "Hope" Mix" is a bit better, getting both heavier and spacier; "Life In Mono - Bushmaster Mix" completely loses the melody under a thick carpet of muddy sounds, except for a few wavery moments. And finally there is an instrumental version of "Life in Mono," which is basically the pretty, rippling melody without the vocals.

The UK trip-hop band Mono only produced one album, sadly. But at least it was an excellent one. And "Life in Mono" is an enchanting song, even if it loses some of its magic under the thick layers of bass and percussion here, along with some heavy electronic work. The Propellerhead remixes are probably the most even work in the single, maintaining their sound smoothly to the end.

There are some duds in the "Life in Mono" single, and few of the remixes sound anything like the original. But it's certainly worth looking at.

4 out of 5 stars Life in mono.......2004-02-09

I first remember hearing "Life in Mono" in a commercial for that godawful POS called "Great Expectations" with Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke on television several years ago. I was immediately smitten with the intricate melodies and fragile vocals. I bought the full-length cd shortly after first hearing the song and finding out that Mono sings the song however I was disappointed in the cd. I found out that the only song I liked on it was "Life in Mono". Everything else was...well, garbage immediately comes to mind. So I sold the full-length cd and later found a copy of just the single "Life in Mono" with its remixes. My one issue with the single is that the album version is like only around three and a half minutes long contrary to what it says on the back of the cd. The remixes were very interesting to say the very least. My personal favorite of the four mixes was the Alice Band mix which was remixed by the guys in Propellerheads. It had a very laid back, bass-driven feel to the song. The Sweat Band Mix was a more rock orientated mix along with techno beats. For some odd reason, the Sweat Band mix reminded me of Underworld's "Dark and Long". I don't know why but it just had that same dark feel to the song. I didn't care much for the remix because it lacked any vocals. The "Hope" mix was cool because it was remixed as a drum and bass track. I'm not a big fan of drum and bass music in general but I thought "Life in Mono" did sound good as a d&b song. The Bushmaster mix was good too. Maybe slightly better than the "Hope" mix. Of course I loved the instrumental. With or without vocals, I just love hearing intricate melodies of the harpsichord on this particular song. Overall, solid remixes.

5 out of 5 stars Big 80's sound meets 90's techo-house.......2000-07-04

Trying to compare "Life in Mono" to another song is very difficult... the only one that comes to mind is Portihead's "Sour Times."

This EP CD includes 4 different versions of "Life in Mono." The first is the radio edit of the song. The second is a remix by the Propellerheads (which is my favorite of the remixes!). Third comes a remix by the band Banana Republic, and fourth is Bushmaster's remix.

Most of the remixes bear little resemblance to the original song, so you really are not getting a rehash.
The radio edit is dramatic, layered, clean yet dark.
The Propellerheads, in their fashion, create a driving bass line that pumps through the song.
The Banana Republic Dub is your classic techno/hip-hop dub. No suprises, and sounds NOTHING like the original.
Bushmaster does a nice job of mixing in and out of elements in the original.

I love this CD and listen to it while driving, writing, or gaming. Be sure to check out CD2 as well.

4 out of 5 stars Mono what a terrific cd.......1999-12-28

listening to "Life in Mono" soothes your mind. Although the song has a sad tone in it but it still a great music..... However, i recommend fans to look for the Formica Blues Remix, the songs their are better than the original Cd. Unfortunately, finding it is hard to find and if you have one pleaaassseeee tell me where you got it. e-mail me @ technoholic_79@yahoo.com

The cut "life in mono" in my opinion is awesome. But the second track is even better. Listen to it on a rainy day and you'll know exactly what i mean. Its kinda like the song that closes the move frantic

      4 out of 5 stars 80's meets 90's with 2000 twist........2000-07-04

As I said in my review of CD1, trying to compare "Life in Mono" to another song is very difficult... the only one that comes to mind is Portihead's "Sour Times."

This EP CD, like CD1, includes 4 different versions of "Life in Mono." The first is the radio edit of the song. The second is a remix by the Propellerheads (which is my favorite of the remixes!). Third comes a remix by Mr Natural, and fourth is LHOOQ's remix.

Two of the remixes bear little resemblance to the original song, but the Propellerheads mix... yummy.
The radio edit is dramatic and layered, clean yet dark.
The Propellerheads have created a deliciously funked version. Its simple and jazzy nature twist BEAUTIFULLY with the lyrics. This version grapples with the original as best of the bunch. (Between this one and the first track, your money is WELL spent.)
Mr Natural creates an odd mix of textures. This remix takes a long time to get going, but once it does, it grooves nicely.

LHOOQ has mixed a version that pales in comparison to the other two. All the right pieces are there, but some are over done and some are... annoying.

I love this CD. I can't compliment the first two tracks enough. Be sure to check out CD1 as well!

4 out of 5 stars Perfect for a mood swing.......2000-06-25

Wonderful single to have! Besides the original first two tracks, the third track concentrates on her vocals-undoubtingly beautiful and captivating. The fourth has a mysterious groove to the song that's somewhat meloncholic, even flowing to the spiritual. But the last track is more upbeat and lively, perfect if you are in a hurry to get somewhere :) Gotta have CD for our complex individualities... ~Peace~

Universal.

4 out of 5 stars Who Is Afraid of Emma?.......2007-01-29

Like almost everybody knows, Emma Bunton is a former member of Spice Girls which was the most famous girl pop band ever! She learned a lot in that band, and now you can hear that she has developed so much that she sings perfectly! The opening track "All I Need to Know" didn't impress me much at the beginning but after listening it many times I started to love it! "Life in Mono", "Mischievous", "He Loves Me Not", "I Wasn't Looking (When I Found Love)", and "Take Me to Another Town" were the songs I liked from the first listening. It seems that Emma is interested in jazz music because there's lots of impulses from that kind of music. You could say that this is a jazz-pop album. There's two songs that aren't so good: "Perfect Strangers", and "All That You'll Be" - they are so basic stuff. This is defintely a great album but I would say that Emma's two earlier albums are a little bit better - of course Emma's albums could never be awful.

5 out of 5 stars Emma's Finest Record to Date!.......2006-12-17

When we last heard Emma, she was doing her best to convince her audience that she was from the 1960's. With the release of her junior effort, "Life In Mono" Emma moves further into that sound, leaving behind the fun irony & kitsch of "Free Me". Well, she leaves it behind mostly, it does pop up occasionely.

Emma presents a demure, mature, sexy, yet playfully coy set of ballads & fun mid-tempo numbers that occupy the record. Five are covers (three only included on the expanded version of this record): "Downtown", "Something Tells Me (Something's Gonna Happen)", "Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps", "Por Favor", & the title track. These are excellent & Emma manages to make them hers, without leaving behind the original shimmer that made these songs what they were.

The other material is strictly Emma's, as she guides her assured voice through poignant ballads ("All That I Need to Know") & swinging bossa nova numbers ("He Loves Me Not"). The sound is much more rich here, much fuller as on "I Wasn't Looking (When I Found Love)", a perfect example. The programming is lush & the strings & other back orchestration only compliment this.

Vocally, Emma has never sounded more assured. Her voice soars on the sparkling flirt of a number "Mischievous", she gets a little smoky on "Undressing You", & keeps it slightly cutesy on "Take Me to Another Town".

Overall, Emma has finally delivered her finest record, one that easily outdoes her debut & her sophmore record. One can only wonder if she can top herself here. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful follow-up to Free Me.......2006-12-13

If you appreciate sophisticated smartly arranged pop songs with catchy melodies then you should give this CD a try. It's a breath of fresh air in today's melodically-challenged musical landscape. Honestly, this CD has more hooks than Opie's tackle-box. Maybe that's why, like Emma's last CD 'Free Me', I listen to it day after day, which is something I very rarely do with new CDs I buy. She sings in a very pleasant Olivia Newton John-ish voice that straightforwardly accentuates the song's strengths and she doesn't sound much like any of the current slate of new millenium starlets out there . It's strange to me that such wonderful CDs could be made a former Spice Girl, a group I never had much use for, but there it is. I think this CD proves that 'Free Me' was no fluke, and I look forward to seeing where Emma Bunton goes from here.

5 out of 5 stars WOW, This album is FAB baby........2006-12-10

I left this review for a few days so I could give it few listening.
Free Me was a really great album, which I did not buy until March this year.
When I first listen to it I was blown away, I just did not expect this from Emma.
Now over to Life In Mono, First listening It did not seem as good as Free Me.
