New Jersey white-trash visionary and Monster Magnet frontman Dave Wyndorf spent most of the '80s and '90s dropping acid, popping pills, inhaling pungent weed, and churning out sludgy, drug-induced paeans to hedonistic abandon. And when he finally came down from his cosmic cloud, he realized the rest of the world was as messed up as he was. Addiction loomed everywhere--for power, money, and sex--and all Wyndorf could do was take out his notepad and marvel at the chaos. Monster Magnet's fourth album is a seething document of decay, corruption, and consumerism. It's also more experimental. "Crop Circle" roars with blowtorch guitars and a circular groove; "19 Witches" and "Your Lies Become You" shiver with twanging surf-punk guitars; and "Space Lord" buzzes like a swarm of angry wasps. One of the best heavy music records of the 90s........2007-05-21

Admit it, when you first heard the opening, chugging riffs of "Spacelord" your socks were rocked off. Mine were, too. I think this was my favorite cd of my junior and senior year of high school. Every song is a highlight, but "Crop Circle", "Powertrip", "Spacelord", "Bummer", "See You In Hell" and "Third Eye Landslide" are my favs.
You will not find balls-to-the-wall sleaze metal like this anywhere else. This is the epitome of that style and Dave Wyndorf is one of the last true rock-stars. Check out all their other stuff, too. They have never struck out when releasing an album.

Raw energy.......2007-05-18

This is the album to listen to. If you liked the first few tracks from Dopes to Infinity, then this is for you. From the first track, this album does not let up. There are so many good tracks, it is hard to choose a favorite. I especially like "See you in Hell" because of the groovy, psychedelic vibe it has going. I've always been a fan of the heavy, in your face tracks and this cd is filled with them. This is by far my favorite MM album.

ROCKIN' OUT.......2006-07-26

For how cheap you can obtain "Powertrip" for, you should take full advantage. This is their most mainstream record, but also rocks the most. By "rocks" of course, that means it doesn't follow previous monster magnet material as much, but it's a marvelously progressive record. Magnet evolves like every other band, but opposed to most other bands, Dave wyndorf's naturally amazing song writing far excedes the standard to most evolving bands. "Powertrip" is Monster Magnet's debut, to signify breaking out of the underground, but throughout their career sustain and posess that same great energy they've harnessed, and like a fine wine, has only gotten better with time.

YES! This is the stuff, the righteous 'n' raucous scalding stoner rock with brains and a heart and a sense of humor. So many bands profess to purvey it but almost none deliver the goods except Brother Wyndorf & Co.

Only two questions: Why did the Magnet not become mammoth stars? And how did the far less interesting Queens of the Stone Age get so dadblamed big?

Verily, these are eternal mysteries.

You can pretty much just look at the cover of this album and know it's gonna be good. Anybody who's drawn to the Magnet (no pun intended), should totally dig this. It's their typical psychedelic-stoner-metal. I hesitate to say "Powertrip" is as good as "Dopes", but it's roughly as rockin'. "Crop Circle" and the title track kick this off in grand style, and it doesn't let up much after. "Space Lord" of course is the bomb, and drops like one. If looking for your first Monster Magnet disc, this is a good pick. Fans of The Atomic Bitchwax, Soundgarden, and QOTSA enjoy.

Originally released in 1992 and often heralded as one of the best Heavy Rock albums of all time, Spine Of God will be most welcomed in this definitive re-issue. Features updated cover artwork by Alexander von Wieding, new liner notations, diatribes and ranting by Dave Wyndorf hisself and the previously unavailable (and way different) demo version of Ozium.

Spine Of God is all about the downstairs rec. room, black lights and velvet paintings, lava lamps, rollin' doobies and cranking the stereo after school; in other words, it's a satanic drug thing… you wouldn't understand!

New Jersey native Dave Wyndorf was already a rock & roll veteran by the time he formed Monster Magnet in 1989, having cut his teeth with little-known punk band Shrapnel (also featuring future punk producer Daniel Rey on guitars) in the late '70s before retiring from music altogether. Never one to be a quitter, Wyndorf taught himself guitar and assembled Monster Magnet with fellow New Jersey burnouts John McBain on guitar, bassist Joe Callandra, drummer Jon Kleiman and svengelic guru Tim Cronin. Fusing their metal, punk, space rock, and psychedelic influences, the band developed a sludgy, feedback-heavy hard rock sound that helped them stand out from the era's burgeoning retro-rock movement. After releasing a self-titled six-song EP through Germany's Glitterhouse Records, Monster Magnet signed with independent label Caroline Records in 1992 and recorded their first full-length album: the very impressive, uniquely dark psychedelic masterpiece, Spine of God. These re-issues serve as an excellent teaser for the release of the next Monster Magnet classic, due September 2006!

There's nothing I could say or do to give this album justice on how great it really is. No words are capable of describing the haunting, explosive, aggressive, yet cool and calm vibes this album takes you through. I've owned a lot of great albums from a lot of great bands, and I know that it's a little childish, choosing favorites and all, but this album ranks as my favorite album of all time, hands down. Are you interested in music with not only talented musicians, but talented song writers? Well, rest assured that you will have both great songs with some incredible playing. The lyrics are out of this world, perhaps on "mountains of Mars?" This was back when Monster Magnet, who will always reign as my favorite band, was expressing their more psychodelic roots. Basically this is a little different sounding than the band we all know and love today. There are a lot of swirling vocal effects as well as strange synths and eerie guitar leads. Dave's vocals are absolutely stunning. He didn't learn to sing, he was born to sing. There's a lot of built-up and tension that is released as the songs progress. The album's closer "Ozium" takes you to a whole new world, nay, universe! Basically, as a reviewer and music fan, it is my duty to spread the word of this album. Infinite stars!

the best monster magnet record.......2006-10-11

I know many who like monster magnet tendd to favor their later work, for its more metallic agressive nature. This album was mmy introduction bacck at college in 1991, and I never got sick of it. It has some really cool songs, that are very I think influential. Sin's a good man's brother, ozium, zodiac lung, and nod scene. I happened to interview Dave once when I was working for my college radio station. He was very cool, in to music that I knew a little aabout then, alot more now. Stuff like Greasy truckers party hawkwind. I think those of you who don't know hawkwind, should check out: hall of thee mountain grill, do re mi, and out and intake. I only hope DDave can go back to more of a Psychedelic side, the recent balls to the wall rocck, is cool, but I think his music needs to strike a better balance like what you have on this record. Thanks.

Appearance Says Metal, I Say No.......2006-10-07

Monster Magnet comes accross as heavy metal to most people. At this point, they were not. They came close in the late ninetees with the Powertrip CD and finally hit it after that.

Why do I say they are not metal on this CD? This band is notorious for an approach that is not standard. Call it slow, awkward, or even solo-laiden. This band shows the parts here. They just seem to like to show off their skills here one at a time or a few at a time. It also makes for awkward tracks that are not regular songs--more the format of acts like Type O Negative and Rush.

As for musically, this just is not heavy metal here. It has some scariness and some good solos. It seems to be more eerie or tribal and slightly gothic than it is hard, trash, in-your-face, pounding, or anything like that.

So what's with the 4 stars? My negative-sounding explanation is just simply a description and disection. This is not like their current stuff or like metal, however I think that it is still their identity and it is one that I like. It's almost like a band you love can do anything as long as it basically stays in the same genre and it will still be liked. I felt this way wholeheartedly about Megadeth's Risk, Sponge's Wax Ecstatic, and Seven Mary Three's Rock Crown.

DEFINING A GENRE WITH SUPERJUDGE........2006-07-26

Yes, this album defines "Stoner Rock". This album deserves Epic Status. Considered by most that know their Monster Magnet to be the best album of Monster Magnet. Offers such gems as "cyclops Revolution", "Superjudge", "Cage Around the Sun", and the Hawkwind cover "Brainstorm". A highly recommended album that accepts no substitutes.

The best stoner rock album available..........2005-12-28

Nevermind Welcome to Sky Valley, this is easily the best stoner/hard rock album i've ever heard. Monster Magnet were on top of their game with this release.

From the hard rocking Dinosaur Vacume to the middle-eastern tinted Black Balloon, this cd will have you headbanging in no time; something which was barely possible on Spine Of God.

This got more lovin' speed then your lonely souls can chew.

Best of any cd I have ever listened to........2005-12-14

This cd eclipses expectations of any rock fan. The melodies are cosmic, the lyrics very deep. People compare this cd to Black Sabbath's music. In my opinion, Monster Magnet can only be compared to Sabbath for their original sound. Monster Magnet has a much faster and tighter sound. I've listened to MMagnet for a decade, and they are in my opinion the greatest rock band. This cd, like Sabbath's first release can not be pointed down to any decade of music. Monster Magnet's SuperJudge will grow on you year after year. SuperJudge is the deepest of music I have ever heard....It's a kaleidoscope of sound that literally is too much for the brain to take in over just a few plays. This cd is the cd that keeps giving. Nothing compares...nothing.

'Superjudge' was Monster Magnet's second album as they were successfully achieving to bond together two genres,space rock and heavy metal.When I FIRST recieved this CD,I thought the band had one thing in common with artists like Warrior Soul,Voivod and Jane's Addiction in the way they had their very own signature sound.After my first listen to 'Superjudge',I thought MAYBE the group had a former member of Hawkwind with them.I looked at the info inside the CD's front cover and didn't feel all THAT silly when on my second listen,as I discovered they'd done a Hawkwind cover,mind you...of "Brainstorm".Keep in mind this was before I became a major Hawkfan.The other disc's ten cuts sort of reminded me of like a Jefferson Airplane-meets-Black Flag.However,it's noted that their main influences were Hawkwind,Stooges and Sabbath.I've seen Monster several times now and have even hung out with guitarist/vocalist/frontman Dave Wyndorf(who's a heck of a nice guy)twice now.The other tunes on this CD that had me nearly gasping for air were the gut-cruncher "Face Down","Cyclops Revolution",the raga popster "Black Balloon" and "Dinosaur Vacume".What a record!Highly recommended.

fantastic electonicana.......2007-03-21

I can't believe that it actually took me until 2007 to discover this album. What a wonderful album to find. Reminds me of Badly Drawn Boy and Elliot Smith in contemporary emo-folk fashion but he does it all his own way and it fits beautifully. I am listening to this album constantly right now and it is sure to move into my "Top 25 of all time" albums.

Worth a Second Listen.......2007-01-19

Great Album. I had heard a few songs off the album a few months ago, and forgot about it. After seeing it on this site, i decided to just buy the album and hope the rest of the tracks were as good as the few i had heard. It paid off. Great album to chill to and fall asleep with.

Excellent.......2006-07-25

It took some time for this CD to grow on me but now it's one of my top five all-time favorites. The stand-out tracks include Where Happiness Lives, The Day We Left Town, Lay Lady Lay, and Wish Me Well, though the entire CD has an extremely pleasing sound. Solid songwriting, good lyrics, and an interesting use of different sounds make this a stand-out CD well worth purchasing.

Don't buy just for Lay Lady Lay.......2006-07-25

So I'm sure most are considering this album because of the fantastic song "Lay Lady Lay." The truth is, this song is very atypical of the rest of Magnet's work in "On Your Side." It's much more of a newer Radiohead meets Coldplay type sound that is very mellow and somewhat experimental in their sound uses. I definitely do not regret purchasing the album, however, I'd recommend listening to the other tracks before jumping in. Some songs, such as "The Day We Left Town" are absolutely beautiful, and "My Darling Curse" interestingly samples the drum beat exactly from Brubeck's "Take Five" (not sure if this is intentional or not). By the by, it's a pretty good album and will definitely grow on you - it took some time to grow on me. So, if you're contemplating the album simply for Lay Lady Lay, buy the single on iTunes, but if you're looking for a mellow/jazzy/ambient album, you'll like the rest of what Magnet has to offer.

This album is pure genius! Only an insane person would tell you any differently. Not many discs will captivate and move you like Johansen's work will. It's proper to say that Even is one of the most remarkable musicians of his time, and when you get this album it will BLOW YOU AWAY! In fact, the title of this disc should be named, "Money back guarantee," because you are guaranteed to love it. If not named, "Money back guarantee," it should be titled, "Forget all the other CDs in your collection for a few months." Either title would suffice. Once you pop this CD in your player, if you remove it before a month's time, I'd be totally shocked how you'd want to listen to anything else!

Greatest hits lp is the TAB....25.......2005-08-19

Just wanted to mention in reference to the review below: The God Says No album was kind of off because the master tapes were swiped and the band had to start from scratch again, so as a 'quickie-demo-sketchpad' album, damn fine, but yes, not their best. Monolithic had some nice meaty riffs, but its hard to keep a band going after 10 years, tours, albums, etc. MM is one of my faves, especially for keeping the torch of sludge-metal alive since the early 90s when such a style was against the grundge grain. Interested fans should check out current Doom Metal bands such as Electric Wizard, Organe Goblin, High on Fire, Sleep, and its worth the time travel trip to check out Hawkwind, a direct influence on MM. Hawkwind also is significant for being the band Lemmy was in right before good old who know who.

Im quite disappointed by the track selection on this compilation. Ok, so its their best 'hits' but it is not anyway near a good reflection on what MM have produced over the years.

I think a 'best of' would have been more appropriate, as most of their terrific earlier stuff has been left out (i.e Pill shovel, Snake dance, Dinosaur Vacume, Superjudge, Cage around the sun.) I mean, when they have completely missed out anything from their first 2 (and best) LPs with the exception of black balloon, its does them no justice. Furthermore, it seems the collaboration is centered around the Powertrip album with tracks from that taking presidence. Im guessing they are simply trying to appeal more to fans that got into MM later on.

Another thing, 'Melt' and 'Heads Explode' are the only songs from God says no that deserve a place on such a cd. The album was a huge letdown and an insult to most of Monster Magnet older fans. Here's how this set should have looked:

My bad if that doesnt actually fit onto a cd but you get the idea. Anyone unfamiliar with the song 'Superjudge' from the respectively titled LP should give that a listen and tell me if it not the way to round off such an album. Now, i disagree that MM are on their last legs as one reviewer suggested, but i think if they had to release a personal compilation, they could have produced a much better and fairer one than this. The videos are pretty good; the extra tracks are modest so if your a completist, it's worth buying for these too. Be warned, if you are new to Monster Magnet and just want a taste of the band, you wont get a true idea or interpretation of the group from this.

PS. Monolithic Baby that was released last year is much better than God Says no, but still not up to the standard of their first 4 LPs. Still, a worthy purchase.

good not great.......2004-12-15

This a good compilation with the videos,it came out at the same time as Rob Zombies Greatest hits which came with a dvd of videos why are these videos on cdrom isn't that a bit passe now why weren't these clips put on dvd or vcd format.

Monster Magnet's Last A&M Recording.......2004-02-22

Don't think that this band is on its last leg...nothing could be further from the truth. The simple fact is that A&M just didn't promote them effectively. They are a great band and they have a lot more to offer. Get their newest album Monolithic Baby! on Steamhammer records and by all means, purchase this one if you're not familiar with their earlier work.

Monster Magnet's superhuman cartoon mindset becomes ever more grand with each album. Indeed, from the first chord of God Says No, you know you're in for a wild ride. "Melt" finds head Magnet Dave Wyndorf in his "world of pills." "Heads Explode" rolls along with the same mock Mod-fervor as "See You in Hell" (from 1998's Powertrip) before tumbling into absolute mayhem at the chorus. Wyndorf plays the devil's advocate throughout God Says No, switching between adulation toward--and a thirst for--the annihilation of his bitch/goddess foil on "Doomsday" and "Queen of You." The bare-bones, bluesy "Gravity Well" is as raw as it gets; it sounds like an updating of Son House's "John the Revelator." And Wyndorf faces his own judgment day on the sin-soaked title track, finally coming down on the side of the damned. --Chris Campion

More Magnet to Blow your mind........2006-07-13

One of Magnet's least favorable albums. It is of course difficult to live up to previous outstanding albums like powertrip and superjudge...hell they're all great. Every Monster Magnet cd is seperate experience from the other albums. This cd has some magical tracks. "All Shook Out" being a personal favorite. A revisited track of the band's older material "Medicine" shows the bands amazing growth. The self-titled track "God Says No" is a calm, smooth, flowing song that entrances. "Melt" is styled to more older Magnet. All the tracks are diverse from each other, but the album's diversity stands as a great listen over all.

Monster Magnet will put you down on the dirty ground. I'm talking about rock and roll if you know what i mean. Dave Wyndorf is the last f**ing rock n roll hero, and this record is so amazing. Melt, All You Shook Out, Heads Explode, Gravity Well, God Says No or Kiss Of The Scorpion are 6 of the greatest Magnet songs ever. Cry, Down in The Jungle, Silver Future or Doomsday are really really cool too. And The lyrics are so so so cool, powerful and solid. The best lyrics Dave has written ever. Just as good as Powertrip or Monolithic Baby!.

Sorry to say but 5 great songs is enough:

The sad state of affairs is that five great songs on any record now days is rare enough to make it a good record. Truly sad but that's where I'm at these days.

This CD is super cool and worthy of many honorable notes. Such as "it totally rocks" and "this is the defining state of power rock" and it's recorded beautifully well. I've put this CD on some of the finest equipment in the Hi-Fi audio industry and it stands up to any recording out there (even Sting...oh my god!) these guys have the full power of the industry behind them (hence the quality recording) but have not surrendered their commitment to super explosive power rock.

Fraught with cliché after cliché it still delivers. Electric Six could use a few of these tricks on their CD's these guys understand their genre or "format" like Nirvana and the Beastie Boys (also examples of bands understanding what we want when we buy one of their records) Monster Magnet knows how to deliver the goods to their fans.

It compromises nothing for the format

It's a pretty darn good CD for anybody who makes the claim to be a fan of rock... Do you? Better yet, can you?

This is a mixed Album it has some great tracks and some not so great, It's not as Good as POWERTRIP or Dopes to Infinity but it has its moments.

Buy Powertrip and Dopes to infinity first and if you like them try this 2.

Spacey Garage Stoner Rock.......2003-07-18

This band(especially singer/songwriter Dave Wyndorf) is hard to pigeonhole. On God Says No, they attempt everything from Sabbath worship on "Silver Future," to garage rock "Kiss Of The Scorpion," adding proto-slide blues "Gravity Well." Maybe they suffer from ADD. When these elements are mixed they produce potent music; "Melt" and "Heads Explode." Wyndorf's yen to experiment often gets the better of him though. Songs like the Doors-ish "All Shook Out" and the techno "Take It" sound foolish next to the band's stoner rock cuts. They would be wise to concentrate on just being a old fashioned rock band, instead outsmating themselves.

New Jersey native Dave Wyndorf was already a rock & roll veteran by the time he formed Monster Magnet in 1989, having cut his teeth with little-known punk band Shrapnel (also featuring future punk producer Daniel Rey on guitars) in the late '70s before retiring from music altogether. Never one to be a quitter, Wyndorf taught himself guitar and assembled Monster Magnet with fellow New Jersey burnouts John McBain on guitar, bassist Joe Callandra, drummer Jon Kleiman and svengelic guru Tim Cronin. Fusing their metal, punk, space rock, and psychedelic influences, the band developed a sludgy, feedback-heavy hard rock sound that helped them stand out from the era's burgeoning retro-rock movement. After releasing a self-titled six-song EP through Germany's Glitterhouse Records, Monster Magnet signed with independent label Caroline Records in 1992 and recorded their first full-length album: the very impressive, uniquely dark psychedelic masterpiece, Spine of God. Previous recording sessions also yielded a number of extensive space rock jams that would later be issued as the Tab…25 album in 1993. These re-issues serve as an excellent teaser for the release of the next Monster Magnet classic, due September 2006!

Wyndorf and Co's first slice of prime fuzzadelic stoner sludge space metal, recorded at the same time as their debut full-length mantelpiece Spine Of God (although this so-called EP is actually just as long). Although little more than a series of extended space jams (like that ever stopped the first four Hawkwind albums from being good) smeared in layers of fuzz guitar and flanged vocal, the album nevertheless displays the roots of everything that would help the Magnet flower into one of the '90s and '00s premier hard rock acts. You are absolutely wrong. The ORIGINAL version of Tab featured just Tab, 25,Longhair and Lord 13. Subsequent re-issues added songs from the Glitterhouse EP. And those added tracks were put on there without the knowledge of the band. So there.

Poor Effort for a Reissue.......2006-06-02

What a dismal reissue this turned out to be. I'm a big fan of reissued and/or remastered albums from my favorite bands. Better sound, bonus tracks, cool booklet with extra liner notes, lyrics, pictures, etc. I'm a sucker for this stuff and I have no problem blowing my discretionary income on it. Usually I'm quite satisfied. Not the case here.

What did I get. Better sound, sure. Bonus track, yep a crappy live version of Spine of God that sounds like it was recorded on an old cassette tape. Extra liner notes, oh sure, Dave Wyndorf makes some brief comments on the album. No lyrics, pictures, credits, etc. The booklet is one folded page with Dave's thoughts on one panel.

My biggest outrage is that there are songs missing on here. The music is really the most important thing so to give me a reissue that is missing some of the originial tunes is unbelievable. I had the original cd so I know what was supposed to be on here. I give Amazon credit for listing the songs and times on the site, there is no false advertising. I just assumed they made a mistake but, sure enough, the cd is missing some key music. The original cd contained the following tracks and times:

Tractor 3:25 (early version redone on Powertrip)

As for the music, this is truly for the die hard Monster Magnet fan. This would be the last place to start if you are just a casual listener or just starting to get into Monster Magnet. You can read more reviews on the original version to decide if Tab...25 is a worthy purchase.

As for this reissued version, don't support this poor effort. Save your money and buy the original cd if you decide you need to have it.

This album Is pretty solid from start to finish. Almost every song on this album is supergreat. Pretty staightforward record. Guitar heaven. The songs that could've been left out are "there's no way out of here" and "too bad", beacause those songs are cool but kind of... i dont know, should've been left out. The rest of the album is amazing specialy: Supercruel (WOOOOOOOOOWWWW), The Right Stuff (Straight Punk), Ultimate Everything (that song is awesome), Master Of Light (Yeah) and Radiation Day (Great great song. Great ROCK N ROLL record. This is the stuff i was looking for.

Bettern than the last two but still not a return to glory!.......2005-06-23

Nothing like getting dropped by a record label to send a band scurrying back to their trademark
sound. If you've been keeping up with Monster Magnet releases you know that they've strayed
from their stoner rock roots on the last couple releases which got them a lot of new fans but
alienated their core audience. Sounds like a lot of bands after they get a taste of the big time but
Monster Magnet was smart enough to return with something that can please both camps.

Right from the get go you can hear the return to form with the up beat "Slut Machine" and stony
mid paced chugger "Supercruel". There's even a hint of the "Superjudge" era sound on the next
cut "On The Verge" complete with an alternate tuned sitar sounding intro. These are all solid cuts
but longtime fans will notice the continuation of the more stripped down sound of the last couple
albums. No bong hits in the background, no swirling feedback, no more psychedelic fuzz and
other odd assortments. Some fans may appreciate the lack of what could be viewed as
distractions but I always thought these elements made the songs richer and more complex,
really helping set Monster Magnet apart from their more straight laced Sabbath clone peers. Not
that this is totally missing, there's brief glimpses of it on songs like "Radiation Day" but certainly
nothing like their early work.

Gripes about their current sound aside, there's enough stony riffs on here to please even the
most hardcore stoner rocker but they seem to be concentrated on the front half. The later part of
this record has a few of the slower, space rock cuts that fall a little flat, being a tad long and
repetitive and more importantly lacking the punch of the harder rocking tunes at the start of the
disc. The one standout on the latter half is "Too Bad", which like "On The Verge", sounds
suspiciously similar "Black Balloon" off of their "Superjudge" album. That's cool though because I
always really liked that song so it's nice to hear a reprise.

Overall, I think this is a pretty strong return to form as there are several strong stoner rock cuts on
here but it never quite reaches the brilliance of their earlier work. Still, at least it surpasses their
somewhat lackluster last couple of albums and may be the start of better things to come.

The Masters Of Stoner Rock Return With A Monolithic Album.......2004-10-02

"Monolithic Baby!" seems to come at about the right time. Hard-rock is back in a big way, and although Monster Magnet don't fit in with the new wave of heavy metal, their larger than life sound is just as welcome in a music world that is shifting, and thankfully, steering in a more heavy direction. After their last, somewhat disappointing album, 2001's "God Says No," and a falling out with their former label, Monster Magnet make their triumphant return on the German indie label SPV with "Monolithic Baby!," an album that reminds us all of why we listened to MM in the first place, and most importantly isn't afraid to rock us in all the right places. Tracks such as "Sl#t Machine" and "Unbroken (Hotel Baby)" work in the same tradition of previous hits like "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" and "Spacelord" with gigantic choruses, memorable hooks and hard-hitting musicianship. Elsewhere, the band experiments with their tried and true sound; "Master Of Light" dabbles in a bit of electronica, while the brilliant cover of David Gilmour's "There's No Way Out Of Here" serves as the highlight of this affair, bringing out some classic rock influences and, even though it's a cover, perfectly displays frontman David Wyndorf's sense of melody and mood. Every song seems to flow into one another and the album doesn't hit any weak spots. Definitely one of the best surprises of 2004, this album may not be the Billboard mainstay of the year, but it brings Monster Magnet back to the fold with some new tricks up their sleeve and a newfound passion for making music. The limited edition contains two bonus tracks: a sequel to the "Dopes To Inifinity" track, "King Of Mars 2004," and the Lou Reed cover "Venus In Furs." The DVD portion contains two videos, one for "The Right Stuff," and another, much sexed up, for "Unbroken (Hotel Baby)." A brief live performance and a worthy interview with the band are also featured. Definitely worth picking up for any fan of rock music.

Worst effort to date........2004-08-25

Monster Magnet have truly lost it. I was hoping that they would recover from that abomination God Says No. I was hoping it was just a little hicup and that Monolithic would bring back the sound and energy of the old Monster Magnet. I didn't think it was possible, but Monolithic is even worse than God Says No. It is an insult to their fans. Don't bother.

As with all my other reviews, I try to keep them short and sweet. Another great cd by Monster MAgnet. I own Dopes and Powertrip, and I like this one just as much as the others. It's not a stoner cd like some of thier earlier ones. It's more of just a strait up rock 'n' roll album that just completly kicks but. I recomend this cd to anyone who likes MM or good rock in general

It's heavy and right in your face.......2003-12-19

I see that the everyone so far is rating this album with 5 stars. Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I can't see how "Blues Magnet" can be regarded as a masterpiece. Don't get me wrong, some of the songs are very good but it sure doesn't work all the way.

This album is filled with heavy power blues with fat and distorted guitars. Pat Travers might not be the world's greatest singer but his voice works just fine with this kind of approach. Among the better tracks are "Rock yer blues away", "She gets the loving", "Fall to pieces", and "Travelin' blues", but in the long run it all gets kind of boring and it feels like Pat Travers goes on and on and on and on. If you like your blues served in a hard and heavy way I guess this album is perfect for you.

Smokin' Blues Delux.......2002-01-25

PT is at his intense guitar playin'best on this recording. Crushing chords and clean leads makes all the songs on this CD a pleasure for any fan of blues influenced hard rock. His song writing is superb through out and the vocals fit the rough and tumble feel of these cuts.
Listen to "This world we live in" and try to tell me this guy isn't coming from the right place.

If you love blues with a pumped up metal edge, it doesn't get any better...buy this CD now!!!

Can't Get Enough.......2001-08-08

Ditto the comments about appealing to hard rock and hard blues fans. I was lucky enough to see Pat a couple times. Up until the last couple CDs before this one (a couple recordings way under Pat's usual high energy, original stuff), his recordings were so fine. This IS a return of sorts to the Black Pearl days. Gut-wrenching electric blues fans -- this one's for you.

The Best Pat Travers Album Since The 70's!.......2000-09-18

BLUES MAGNET marked a return to classic form for Pat Travers. It features the funky, but hard-edged blues sound that made Pat a success in the late 70's, and some truly memorable songs. Heavy enough for Hard Rock (and some Metal) fans, but bluesy enough to appeal to fans of Blues as well, BLUES MAGNET would have been a huge success during Pat's heyday. All of the songs are strong, but the Title Track, "Lil' Southern Belle," and "Elaine," are standout tracks that would be highlights on ANY of Pat's albums. If you like Hard Rockin' Blues, you've got to get BLUES MAGNET! -(And if you like this one, check out LOOKIN' UP by Pat Travers, and ZZ Top's FIRST ALBUM)

The first thing I heard from Bill Laswell was his work with Buckethead on the album Colma. I just really liked the ambient bass guitar sound that he creates. The mixture of dub reggae with awesome soundscape-creating vocals and horns on this album is well worth a listen for anyone who likes music. If you listen to anything from Bob Marley to Pink Floyd, or if you just like to chill out to some really tight grooves, this is the album for you.
