French duo Air's debut album is a superlatively happy collection of experimental disco-mood sound nestled between ambient soundscape and breathy pop. It's jazzy and melodic, and mostly laid-back, but not excessively so. There are a few shake-it, shake-it numbers, too, like the absurdly daft hit "Sexy Boy." It's snap your fingers and hang out (while reading) music or dance around sexy-slow with your mate music. It's also the perfect music to do your ironing or some other chore to; it's hypnotizing wallpaper music. It slips in and out of your consciousness, forcing you to move around with a relaxed smile before you even realize it. Oh, and contrary to sampler fashion, Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel played the instruments themselves. Bravo. --Mike McGonigal

Serene chill-out music with warmth...and grooves.......2007-06-01
Some years ago I saw a hypnotic video on a music show [perhaps Rage, on ABC TV Australia]. The video is hypnotic because it featured a story about two girls, sisters perhaps, who grew up playing various tennis like games. The music and video combined was enchanting so I made a point of one day buying the song or album. Well, I got around to doing so within the last year.
The music on this album features a mellow female singer in most songs, or, for one song, a heavily accented French man singing English lyrics. The album combines English and French lyrics. The synthesiser is dominant on this album, though you do hear keyboards, pianos, bass, violins, trumpets and tambourines, I think.
A few of the tracks are instrumentals, but the standout tracks for mine are the poppy songs "Sexy boy" and "Kelly watch the stars"...the latter being the hypnotic song I mentioned earlier. In tracks like these you get a heavy bass sound from the keyboard and a groove perhaps like you get in the band Daft Punk [I'm not that familiar with Daft Punk, but to me there seems to be a similarity of sound with Air on occasion].
"Sexy boy" is probably my favourite track on this album. The title is spoken repetitively in this song by a honey voiced French female. Other lyrics are used, but it pretty much has vocal riff of "sexy boy".
As for "Kelly watch the stars" this is a song which reminds me, in a way, of Metallica's "One". By that I mean the song's strenghts are magnified with the aid of a video, but, by themselves, are weaker without the video. This song does have its strengths though, despite having the title as the only lyrics of the song and repeated frequently. One of those strenghts is, again, the female vocalist's tone of voice.
The track with the sole male voice appearing is "Remember" and this song is notable in that it samples the synth beat of my favourite Beach Boys song "Do it again". Any song with such a beat/rhythym can't be all that bad...all the heavily accented voice isn't as seductive to this male as the female voices.
Many tracks have a spacey feeling to them, and a couple, at least, even have sound effects reminescent of the kind of sound effects you hear for UFOs in those science fiction movies of a few decades ago.
Track #7 on this album features a sythesiser effect which sounds to me like the wind blowing sand in a desert. If you like that part of the track, then check out Jean Michael-Jarre's album "Oxygene" which has longer passages in this vein.
Track #1 features some ambient noise or synthesiser effects mimicking a running stream with some forest sounds, like crickets or what have you.
In closing this album mixes up tracks with a spacey feel, to bass heavy rhythyms which sound cool and are overlayed with keyboard tinkling at the higher end of a keyboard.
N.B. if you like this kind of music, or instrumentals, or more arty stuff, check out my reviews at this site of:
The Cocteau Twins: Blue belle knoll [not unlike this Air album]
Patti Smith: Horses [a poetic album, lyrically speaking]
Jean Michael Jarre: Oxygene [not reviewed here but highly recommended for instrumental tracks performed on synthesiser]
Midnight Oil: Bird noises [not reviewed here, but a very nice instrumental features on this EP]
And, lastly, brace yourself: Metallica: Master of Puppets [for the spacey instrumental Orion. The rest of the album is mostly heavy metal. Reviewed here by me].
It was Okay..........2007-05-14
This CD was a little less than I was expecting from it. Only liked about 3 tracks on it, and only one of those blew my socks off. I probably would not buy it again if I could go back.
Fantasmal.......2007-04-07
This is the ultimate cruising CD. I love it and when I put it into my car it stays playing on repeat for at least 2 months at a time.
doesn't do it for me.......2007-01-03
coming from a rock viewpoint, this music is garbage. I see all the other bad reviews and they're getting very low percentage for how helpful they are, and I can't help but think that all those votes are from Air-affiliated entities. As one other reviewer stated, all the songs are repetitive and boring. Some of the songs use the same exact notes throughout the entire song. In my opinion, a lot of today's pop has much more musical talent than this album.
An excellent introduction to chillout.......2006-12-30
When I bought this CD three years ago, I was astounded by the slowness and smoothness of the tracks - I hadn't heard anything like it before. These days, after becoming familiar with the likes of Zero 7 and Massive Attack (trip-hop), the vocals on Moon Safari detract from my enjoyment of the CD overall.
Still, "La Femme D'Argent" and "Le Voyage De Penelope" are among my favorite tracks of any genre, and "You Make It Easy" is a great romantic song. On the whole, I'm very glad I own this CD and although it's not for everyone, I recommend it to those of you looking to discover new genres or expand your collection of chillout music.

A wonderful CD for your nursery!.......2002-05-06
As a first time parent I want to give my child every advantage I can. Studies have shown that playing music to your child helps to enhance their learning ability.
I saw "Baby's First" cd series and as they were so affordable I decided to go ahead and buy them without hearing them first.
My decision has been rewarded! The cd's are very good, and provide hours of music to stimulate my babies mind. This cd in particular is a god send. Within minutes of popping it into the cd player my baby girl is off to dreamland!
Buy this CD today, you won't be disappointed, and neither will your youngsters! :)
Great CD for Naptime!.......2000-06-26
This is the favorite CD at my daughter's daycare. They play it every day, because it's just perfect for naptime. It so calming and soothing, that it lulls little ones of all ages right into happy slumber land. I highly recommend it for both tots and tired moms!

Air-y and pretty.......2005-02-23
Air is one of those downtempo electronica bands who specialize in exquisitely pretty music. And two of their most beloved albums are their debut "Moon Safari," and the musical score for Sofia Coppola's debut "The Virgin Suicides," compiled together in a boxed set.
Their debut "Moon Safari" is the stuff of electronic legend -- pretty, fragile and airy, but with pop sensibilities and jazzy rhythms woven in. Listening to it is a bit like floating on a cloud. They include a few dancey fun numbers like "Sexy Boy," but Air seems to be solidly sitting in the clouds with their soothing, soft music.
"Virgin Suicides" was apparently crafted specifically for the movie, at the director's request. Like the film, it's incredibly pretty and haunting, yet has dark undertones that give the whole thing a brooding sound. A couple songs like "Clouds Up" sound trippy, but the rest of it sounds tragic and ethereal. In other words, perfect for the movie.
If you had to put together two albums from Air's discography, then probably these two are the best choices -- "Moon Safari" is what people think of when they think of Air, and "Virgin Suicides" is similar, but just different enough to be intriguing and engaging.
Their styles are actually quite different -- what the two albums have in common is ethereality, and the space-pop edges and ambient prettiness. "Moon Safari" is sexier and spacier, with a jazzy twist in some of its songs. It's not exactly spacey, but it feels like an extended trip up into the clouds.
On the other hand, "Suicides" veers closer to the ambient pop edge, with the occasional slow edge of dark keyboard. Adding to the otherworldly sound is soft female harmonies rising over it all, as if the girls of the title are singing on their way to the hereafter. Not a single song could be called dancey or even midtempo.
The two-pack of "Moon Safari" and "The Virgin Suicides" is a great place to start with this band, and two of their best full-length albums. Airy, trippy and ethereal.

The Pinnacle of Electronica........2003-08-05
I could lecture for hours probably about how electronica has changed between 1998, when this cd was made, and now, 2003, when this review was written. A lot's happened. In short, a genre that spent 30 years putting together a foundation and less than five years in becoming an actual mainstream area. Electronica is a genre obsessed with the divides between mainstream and underground, and in the past of couple of years, the music has taken a turn in many directions, mainly towards experimentation or pop music. That's the musical history lesson for today.
Moon Safari was released, as I said, before all of this happened. Now, it sounds incredibly mainstream (I hate the terms mainstream and underground, because good music is good music, but its hard to find other way to explain the two), but then it was kind of experimental. At the time, however, a group like Air could put out a cd like Moon Safari, which is accurately described as having a certain bubble gum quality, and gain respect, not insults, from all people enamored with the genre.
Every track on this cd is incredibly good. At the end, you hear hints of The Virgin Suicides Score, and 10,000 ghz legend. At the beginning, you're reminded of Premiers Symptomes, the first Air album. It fits right in with their artistic history.
Favorite tracks (in the order they appear on cd):
La Femme D'Argent
Kelly Watch the Stars
TALISMAN
Remember
Ce Matin-La
If you want to hear some good music, buy this album. And if you don't like it, either because it's not mainstream enough, or because it's too mainstream, at least you heard it, and if you can't get props from others on it, as in "hey, you own moon safari, you dog you", you can always sell it to a used cd shop, where it will undoubtedly go quick.
Not Air's Best - But Already Very Good.......2001-10-26
Air's first album 'Moon Safari' is the least brilliant of the band's albums so far.
Still, it is a very worthwile buy.
Sometimes it sounds like music which can be used for tv series, like 'Talisman'. Or 'Ce Matin Là' with its horn sounds and bubbling synths.
The spacey 'Sexy Boy' is very early-1980ish and must be a dance floor hit. Funny and great track, a lot more optimistic and relaxed than most Air stuff. 'Kelly Watch The Stars' is another great song - the favourite song of many an Air fan. The way it uses the synthesizer effects is simple but well-arranged in the smallest detail.
At the lower end of the scale are the two songs on which Beth Hirsch sings the lead vocals. Her far to fragile and not particularly charming voice bore these compositions down to close-to-nothing.
Not Air's Best - But Already Very Good.......2001-10-26
Air's first album 'Moon Safari' is the least brilliant of the band's albums so far.
Still, it is a very worthwile buy.

An orgy of sounds that wil make your mind run free.......1999-03-10
This album is something out of this world. The instrumntals speak volumes. If ever a music style were to be ranked with the best this would be amongst the top. Its soft jazzy undertones make the rythm stick in your mind like nothing else. An original that could never be replicated. I love this CD. I tell people of it all the time. Though I wish the word of this hit gets out, I also want to keep it a secret. It's that catchy tune you hum and everyone wants to know what it is.
Amazing and thought provoking!!
Dreamy French Film Noire meets lounge core heaven!.......1998-12-30
The French duo that makes up Air was more or less unknown before the release of Moon Safari. I read an early review of the album that got my juices flowing - when it was finally released, I was at the front of the queue.
What is the music like? Imagine a gently flowing stream, or the wash of a distant sea against a mystical shore. Imagine strange electronic sounds, the dreamy calm of a French female vocalist, a few acoustic guitars, and synthesizer sounds reminiscent of the 70's.
Mix all of these ingredients carefully, layer, edit and...Hey Presto! you have Moon Safari. The texture is rich yet subtle. The sound engaging yet ethereal.
For me, the essence of this album lies in one track.....'All I need' - listen, enjoy and float away.
