This is a splendid addition to the Adams discography, one that follows him from New England to California. Dharma at Big Sur is a concerto for electric violin. It begins by evoking the West's sun and easy living, but this is more than a musical piece of nature-painting. It rambles ambiently for a while before landing in an Indian raga, jazzy mode and ends with a type of heavenly good-naturedness. The electric violin is played by Tracy Silverman; a sixth string allows for the sonorous tones of the cello. The other work, presented on a second CD (so as to avoid culture shock?) is My Father knew Charles Ives, which, while apparently untrue, lets us know that Ives's New England sound and his wacky one-on-top-of-the-other methods will be found here, and, indeed, they are. It pays homage to some of Ives's music (the trumpet from his "The Unanswered Question" is clear here), but more than that, in its various sections ("The Lake;" "The Mountain") it evokes the nature of New England as picturesquely as Ives does, and parallels Adams's California in Dharma A pair of fascinating works, at times a bit thorny, but well worth it. --Robert Levine

Album Description

Featuring two highly-acclaimed commissioned orchestral works, The Dharma At Big Sur and My Father Knew Charles Ives, performed by the BBC Sumphony with Adams himself conducting. While panoramic in scope, these multi-part pieces are also deeply personal in nature. Described as "autobiographical sound memories" by the BBC, they evoke the well-traveled American composer's east coast/west coast life and wide-ranging musical education.

3 out of 5 stars A mixed bag.......2007-07-02

I found this set a mixed bag. The first work - "The Dharma at Big Sur" - is a bit disappointing save for the massive ending, which is admittedly mind-blowing. The opening movement is a wash, a verrrrry long recitative-like statement for the soloist over some interesting harmonies, but all seeming almost like a too-long introduction to the second movement.

"My Father Knew Charles Ives", on the other hand, is quite a great piece. Attempts in American music have been made to be "like Ives" - incorporating twisted quotes of popular song, hymns, etc. at varying tempos and in varying keys - with extremely varying success. Most fail - Adams here reigns supreme. I like the fact that the piece brings back some of the insanity of the "Chamber Symphony", includes overwhelming climactic moments like "Naive and Sentimental Music" or the Violin Concerto, but also breaks new ground. This is clearly post-post-minimalist music from Adams and is exciting to hear.

The performances and recorded sound are universally excellent, with wide dynamic range and excellent clarity throughout the orchestra in both works. The soloist in Dharma is tastefully spotlit.

One drawback is that 2 CDs for these two pieces without some other filler material is a waste. We could certainly have used new recordings of some older (or even recent) Adams work to set these two in relief.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-03-09

I'm a pianist and i find The Dharma at Big Sur to be one of the most beautiful pieces i've ever heard. The Ives piece is good, but i'm not too crazy about it.

3 out of 5 stars Breakfast cereal vs. real accomplishment.......2007-01-08

I don't think John Adams should be canonized so early. The idiom he's chosen to write in, tonal minimalism, has now survived long enough to show up early critics who accused it of repetitiveness, sterility, and kitsch. But the shadows of banality linger far too often over Adams and Glass, the most popular minimalists commercially speaking. I have no allegiance to atonality or the advanced modernism of, say, Ligeti and Lutoslawski, but on the other hand, I don't want chewable breakfast cereal that goes down easy and leaves a few minutes of sugqary aftertaste.

To my ears, the two works here are quite different in quality. Adams's concerto for electric violin, Dharma at Big Sur, sounds like musical wallpaper, its easy-to-swallow mellowness bordering on junk. My Father Knew Charles Ives, however, is an honest attempt to assimilate Ives, himself an expert in collage, into an updated collage. What's the point of a collage of a collage? On the surface it's a silly enterprise, a bit like cutting a Cubist painting up into small squares. But Adams displays great ingenuity throughout, and I'd say that he's hitting a note somewhat higher than John Corigliano, for example, with some prospects that this coloful, varied work will not date as badly as Corigliano's has. The full resources of a large orchestra are used, and the patchwork includes many Ivesian elements--marches, patriotic songs, mysterious faraway atmospherics--that still work in this reworking. Certainly there's no doubt that Adams has matured into a master of what he wants to accomplish, and if my ears tell me that one piece is piffle while the other is memorable, future audiences and critics will be the judge.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-03

John Adams never ceases to amaze and this latest release is as good as they come. "Dharma," a concerto for electric violin and orchestra, is extraordinary: full of colorful, brilliantly inventive orchestrations, soaring melodies, and rich harmonic contours, it is a grand and glorious bear-hug of a score. Tracy Silverman is the dazzling soloist. "My Father Knew Charles Ives" is equally magnificent and rather more personal. References to Ives abound, but you don't necessarily need to be familiar with his output to appreciate Adams's; of special note should be the haunting second movement and the beautiful (surprising) coda of the third.

4 out of 5 stars Adams gets his groove back..........2006-12-21

My Father Knew... is little more than a skillful if somewhat bland symphonic Ives pastiche, but John Adams sort of gets his groove back in The Dharma At Big Sur -- a rhapsodic, rambling, and rather trippy fantasia for electric violin and orchestra. It's not very polished and it's actually a little tacky... and that's exactly what's great about it. (Hey, why on Earth did Nonesuch release less than an hour of music as a two CD set? tsk-tsk...)

Buck Dharma was the lead guitarist for Blue Oyster Cult, one of the most successful hard rock bands ever. He made only one solo album, Flat Out, in 1982. Fans have been screaming for this, here it is! Wounded Bird. 2003.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Flat Out .......2007-01-04

I purchased this cd because I had the lp from years ago and it is a fantastic album. There are several great songs, especially "Your Loving Heart". This is a great song and is a real tear-jerker. Would recommend this to any die hard Blue Oyster Cult fan or to anyone who just likes a good rock cd!

    5 out of 5 stars lost treasure.......2004-12-10

Back in the haze of my college years...i remember this album coming out and had feared that BOC had broken up.I had heard the album at a party and noted some fine songs but never did go to purchase it.
I saw that it was available very recently and a whole collage of memories fell.It is a great album.Very pop oriented for the lead guitarist of the band that seems to love doom and gloom.I can see how the songs would not fit a BOC album.
The highlights are "all tied up"....and a remake of "come softly to me" which almost brought my wife to tears when she heard it.Buck's singing is really good along with his guitar playing. One song does have a whack of 1980's production in it...but it fits it perfectly.I highly recommend it to everybody.
The rest of the album has some great songs in a faster vein. All songs were also written by Buck. Put it this way...i have had this CD for 11 days now...and I still put it on when I come from work and enjoy it everytime.....That is how good it is....

4 out of 5 stars Fantastic Guitar, excellent melodies.......2004-12-03

An extremely tight album by a master craftsman. Buck Dharma is a fantastic melodic guitarist with a large cache of technique and flavor - if he looked more like your typical lanky, long-haired slacker rock-head rather that a "nice guy from Long Island" he'd probably be more known in the public eye. Anwar's theme is a great demo tape of his work and All Tied Up is a great example of his ability to walk his leads through a song. Pretty pop oriented with catchy hooks as well.

4 out of 5 stars buck dharma flat out.......2004-11-14

a very good cd from one of the best guitar players in rock. good music, good vocals. i would have liked more stuff like anwars theme. i wanted this on cd for years my vinyl is about worn out.

4 out of 5 stars A great pop-rock album amidst a dark time in rock music.......2004-10-03

When this album came out, it was so poorly promoted that I didn't know it was out until I stumbled upon it in a record store and freaked out. As good as this album is, it could have been better and possibly gone platinum. "Burnin' for You" was intended to be on this album as well, but fellow Blue Oyster Cult members begged Buck to record it with BOC instead. You can definitely hear the similarities.

"All Tied Up" has to be my favorite song on the album and it's no wonder. There are so many pop hooks in the song it infects you.

"That Summer Night" and "Cold Wind" are melancholy tunes that will take you back in time to your first true love.

"Anwar's Theme" is a great instrumental noir tune that could have been the opening theme for "The Untouchables" and is reminicent of Jon and Vangelis' "Friends of Mr. Cairo"

"Five Thirty-Five" is the one tune that got airplay. It is a good tune but has not aged as well as "Burnin' for You".

Buck has a definite, sometimes morbid sense of humor as evidenced by "Your Loving Heart" which is a bit of a farce.

"Wind Weather and Storm" is from a Pearlman or Meltzer poem (I can't remember which) that is silly enough to make you laugh but infectious nonetheless.

"Born to Rock" is another example of silliness on Buck's part but remains a solid rocker.

"Come Softly to Me" is a remake of the Fleetwoods' classic and vocals are shared with Bucks wife Sandy Roeser. I have both versions and I think Buck's is actually better. Buck claims that this is the first song that he made out to as a teenager.

All in all, it is a very good album and fans have been waiting a long time for it to be released on CD. It is well worth the listen.

Michael Hewett is a yoga instructor, but his music draws more on the sound of the American West than on that of the mystical East. Combining electric and acoustic guitars, he creates that wide-open plains feeling you get from Pat Metheny's music; he's joined on several tracks by former Metheny Group bassist Mark Egan. Compositions like "Capricorn" are nicely detailed, electric chamber jazz, while "The Ever Widening Circle" accelerates from plaintive acoustic guitar to a delirious free-fall. But Hewett really sets himself apart on more intimate compositions, such as "Nagual," a haunting adagio on which he plays an acoustic guitar with an e-bow, stringing together a long, mellifluous melody. "Sedona" mixes deft finger-style guitar against a deep mix of cello and electric bass. Hewett loves mixing multiple guitars. On "I Cover the Abyss with a Trance," dual finger-plucked acoustics create a stereo filigree, while e-bowed acoustics snake through the violin and cello refrains. Being in Dreaming signals the appearance of not only a guitar master, but a composer of quietly epic dimensions. --John Diliberto

    Album Description

Unique instrumental stylings of Michael Hewett / Guitarist extraordinaire & yoga teacher. Imagine a blending of "Dark Side of the Moon", Radiohead, Aaron Copeland and Michael Hedges!

"This group of compositions is the product of countless musical influences, a deep love for the guitar in all its forms, and a passionate and prolonged relationship with yoga as both teacher and student."

One of the best CDs I've ever listened to in my life. The music is absolutely phenomenal.

5 out of 5 stars a cd you can play all the way thru.......2003-11-21

This CD is an amazing piece of work. It's one that you can play over and over and never tire from hearing it. Michael is so talented. This definitely transcends "yoga music" - he is a musician, a guitar artiste. Anyone would like this album...I'm not kidding. It's just that good. It's one of my all time favorites.

4 out of 5 stars Nice instrumental guitar work.......2003-06-23

I heard some of Michael Hewett's music on NPR's Hearts of Space one night. So I did some research and wound up buying the CD. Much of the disc is very pleasant new age type acoustic guitar picking with kind of a southwest flair. "Nagual" is really nice with its accompanying flute sounds, "Sedona" indicative of the southwest flavor, and "I Cover the Abyss with a Trance" is a standout with its violin and cello (the cello works great with just about every song on the album). While there are some rough spots (sometimes there is too much finger squeaking, the last song has long interludes of just a humming tone, and parts of "Transmission" with its electric guitar flourishes make it sound like infomercial music) listening to this album is like drinking a glass of water when you are really thirsty. It just goes down great. Don't be put off by Hewatt's yoga background: though I'm sure it's fine to do yoga to, it's just really nice to listen to. It would be great to play if you own some kind of cool shop, or while you're reading, or just in the car to take some stress out of the daily commute.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Compilation of Guitar Music.......2003-04-22

This an excellent cd which is even better when listened to with a pair of headphones. I was introduced to this cd during a yoga class however I feel that the quality of the compositions and the skill of Michael Hewett transcend the yoga studio. Often, I find myself dancing to this music. It will transport you to another reality.

    5 out of 5 stars A fantastic, moving journey........2002-10-28

This is a true instrumental masterpiece. Listen to it while you are reading or doing yoga or just listen. There is mystery here and deep longing and beauty. This music resonates and expands, is mystical and beautiful. Share it with all your friends.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Deeply Relaxing .......2006-08-21

If you are having trouble sleeping or relaxing into meditation, Dharma Moon's "at ease" is a peaceful escape into dreams. Many of the artists on this CD write music for film and television, practice yoga, tour, chant, sing and delve into world fusion.

The artists featured include Jamie Lawrence, Drala, Clifford Carter, David Nichtern, Falu, Steve Gorn and Michael Hewett. I love how Falguni sings with the guitars of David Nichtern and how they are in complete harmony. David Nichtern has recorded with Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder and Billy Crystal. His playing is superior in clarity and beauty.

Each artist selected for this compilation seems to have a deep understanding of the stress of life and how to melt away not only daily stress, but emotional stress that has built up in your body over the years. Like a good yoga routine, each track heals you and nourishes the body. Steve Gorn's Bansuri Flute playing is also especially relaxing and mysterious.

This CD is a perfect compliment to your Yoga practice, an evening massage or daily meditation routine. I find it especially healing at night when I have trouble sleeping or I can't seem to get my mind to stop wandering. Once you start listening to "at ease" you fall into a space where you don't even want to think. The music is such bliss, you only want to focus on relaxing even deeper.

Highly Recommended for Relaxation and Stress Reduction.

Rehmi's fifth album is an innovative blend of electronic breakbeats and Eastern melodies fused with chill guitar. It incorporates drum and bass against an exotic chill out landscape. "Rehmi has managed to create a piece of work that redefines the very essence of what a chill album and a Brit Asian album should be...TJ has always made electronica emotional, but this time he's made his studio weep"--BBC Radio 1.

If you are like me and have wondered where the creativity and intricate beauty of modern jazz has gone, worry no more. TJ Rehmi has taken it and replanted it solidly in the soil of electronic chillout.
The Warm Chill is the perfect chill album because it is intelligent and well crafted enough to demand your attention, and smooth and sensual enough to let it just groove in the background.
    Enjoy.

This is by far one of the best CDs I have spent money on in the last few years. I was introduced to TJ Rehmi by a friend who got his CD while in England and then played it for me. TJ has a way of infusing his sultry chill out tones with exotic eastern melodies that just elevates his music above all others. If you are into chill out scene then you'll love THE WARM CHILL. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars explore the next level of your yoga practice.......2003-04-02

I am a yoga instructor/studio owner and play 'Colors of the Mind' frequently. Steve Gorn's flute creates a magical zone providing an energetic boost to the next level of hatha yoga practice. My students and I experience a quiet easeful opportunity to open our hearts and the heart of our practice. This is very different then an accompaniment that acts upon yoga flows. 'Colors of the Mind' creates a relationship - a light in tone but powerfully synergistic dialogue with our flows.

5 out of 5 stars For exploring inner space.......2002-09-25

Had a busy day? Feeling a bit frazzled? Try Colors of the Mind. In the space of an hour Steve Gorn's exquisitely sensuous playing transports you to the tranquil interior of your own mind. And best of all, that tranquil mood keeps resonating in your body long after you've finished listening. Life is sweet!

There are dozens of yoga CDs on the market, but the body benders at Dharma Moon Records might have a better line on it than most. Founder David Nichtern, who also wrote Maria Muldaur's hit "Midnight at the Oasis," is a Dean of Buddhist Studies, while his wife, Cyndi Lee, is an author and Director of New York City's Om Yoga Center. Lee sequenced Om Yoga Mix with previously released materiel from Dharma Moon Records as well as several new tracks. Mirroring the flow of a yoga session, Om Yoga Mix moves seamlessly from the floating spaces of Michael Hewett's e-bow guitar soliloquy on "Nagual" to more uptempo themes like Nichtern's "In Praise of...," featuring kirtan-style chanting. Nichtern's global fusion group Drala is represented by the energized new track "Moment to Moment" and the slo-mo trance of "Opening the Gates" from their debut CD. An English vocal track with singer Falguni, reveals Nichtern's melodic pop sensibilities filtered through Indian raga. While English vocals are rare in the yoga world, it works on Om Yoga Mix, which takes you on a journey whether you're in a yoga session or listening session. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars Bakti Yoga Music.......2004-08-16

The music might not be the most ideal for an "asana" practice (depending on your style of practice), but this CD is great for an uplifting and positve listen. It is relaxing AND invigorating at the same time. This would make a great CD to listen to when you get sick of the negative pop stuff on the radio. It can also be a great listen for AFTER a yoga practice - as a reinforcing meditation. After all, yoga isn't about just the poses! Namaste

1 out of 5 stars This is awful.......2003-11-14

As individual songs, some of them have merit. As a compilation, OM Yoga Mix makes no sense. It is embarrassing that a Yoga teacher so poorly structured this album and that she missed the mark by such distance that it becomes unlistenable in any environment ...."Professional musicians" apparently review their own work to make it appear valid when infact it is not. Be weary of complimentary reviews that appear too good to be true!

1 out of 5 stars Some tracks ok, but misleading, not a very good yoga CD.......2003-09-13

Some tracks were flat out distracting for a yoga practice, there was no sense of flow or theme. Certainly not a yoga CD for a serious practitioner or yoga instructor. Very disappointed considering the previous reviews that I based by purchase on.

3 out of 5 stars Music is Good but sound Quality terrible.......2003-05-31

Love the Music, but the sound quality kinda kills it. It's still a good cd just not worth the price, plus when I am trying to relax and a bunch of distortion comes out of my speakers, it tends to disturb me out of my state of mind

    5 out of 5 stars OM Yoga.......2003-05-02

As a musician, I highly recommend this groundbreaking, world fusion mix!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I like everything about this.......2006-09-29

This is a very nice meditation CD. Every part of it is professional quality: the music, the instructions themselves and the rest. I really like Sat Hon's voice, it's so soothing - I'd like to have mine similar. The dialogue between master and students provides unexpected insights of the practice. Sat Hon can be very funny at times - and yet you get a lot from him.
I would recommend this CD highly. Sat Hon created a meditation from his study of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism and Qigong energy practices, yet there is nothing religious in the meditation, everything is spiritual, so regardless of your religion - if any - you will like this!

    4 out of 5 stars Peace Practice.......2005-09-03

Soothing and relaxing. Helps the listener find a quiet spot in which to unwind.

5 out of 5 stars To help in challenging times.......2002-10-08

This simple to learn yet profound meditation practice is brilliantly presented in Peace Practice CD. Sat Hon explains its roots in a profound introduction. He then gives poetic and lucid instruction on the techniques of the practice. I got a good insight into the vastness of the meditation listening to the group discussion of both newcomers and practioners sharing the expanse of their experiences. The dialog with Master Hon on suggestions for beginners was very helpful being new to this type of meditation. I loved the evocative music woven throughout the CD which helped me feel and understand the practice as much as the technical instruction.

Thank you Master Hon for sharing this ray of light, a life line to hold onto during these very dark times.

5 out of 5 stars Clear, cool water.......2002-09-30

Sat Hon's Peace Practice cd is very simple, yet profound and timely. The meditation instruction is clear and direct. The question and answer portion includes comments from beginners as well as advanced students of meditation; Sat Hon's responses are unexpected and right on!
The music is professional and supports the material seamlessly.
