5 out of 5 stars Not for children.......2007-04-22

This was produced by Hal Willner at A&M in 1989 when Willner was 31. Willner has also produced albums for Marianne Faithfull, Lou Reed, Bill Frisell, William S. Burroughs, Gavin Friday, Lucinda Williams and Allen Ginsberg, among others. So it should be no surprise that this album is an eclectic mix and highly theatrical in concept. Several reviewers have criticized the use of medleys, but a great many Disney songs have only one verse and a chorus, which makes it difficult to make a full length cut, hence the medleys. It's an album that has aged very well and bears many repeat listenings. Tom Waits, Harry Nilsson,Suzanne Vega, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos, Betty Carter,Sinead O'Connor, James Taylor, Yma Sumac, and narration by Ken Nordine. It sounds as though it should be a real mess, but Willner has put it together so it not only makes sense but is more than the sum of its parts.

3 out of 5 stars Not hte best cd to buy.......2007-04-02

I have bought several Disney cd's like this one and this is my least favorite. Some of the arrangements I feel could scare a young child, like Hey Diddley Dee. The one that I do enjoy is the title song...It is very much the mother's lullaby being sung acapello.

5 out of 5 stars Disney a wee bit on acid........2006-06-09

What an eclectic grouping of artists that came together to make this work. The absolute best Disney tribute CD that adults will probably enjoy more than the children. Sinead deliberatly sings an entire song off key until the last note and it's perfect. There are wonderfull songs that you would expect, but with Tom Waits in the mix you must expect some "oddness". Overall a great CD. 5 Stars easy.

4 out of 5 stars Alternating dark , melancholy and wistful, good but for grown-ups only.......2006-05-16

I found that listening to this work end to end is going to put you in some peculiar moods. The overall feeling is definitely downbeat, even the up-tempo songs have a decidedly ironic and dark bent. My favorite song in this album has to be the exceptionally soulful rendering of "Baby Mine" by Bonnie Raitt; it turns the sentimental mother-child ballad into something more on the romantic side. I have often slow-danced this one with the wife, and you can really feel a hot intensity under the surface of this number. James Taylor's "Second Star To The Right" is exceptionally wistful in his trademark style. Sun Ra's cover of "Pink Elephants" remains true to the original while retaining the peculiar spacy Sun-Ra vibe. One of the more "accessible" Sun-Ra performances I've ever heard.

Tom Waits and Ken Nordine are commanding presences as well. The Tom Waits version of "Hi-Ho" made my wife's imagination conjure nightmare images of murderous doings in Gacy's basement; it creeps her out so badly, she refuses to hear one note of it. I prefer to imagine the dwarves in manic, Fred C. Dobbs-like pursuit of their underground treasure, working too fast in a mine full of hazards and fearsome environments... with a workplace like that, it's no wonder they'd really appreciate a Snow White coming into their lives. Perfect music if you are on your way to a job you hate...

I agree the Sinead O'Connor piece (Someday My Prince Will Come) and Suzanne Vega "Stay Awake" tracks are here mostly for their postmodern ironic effect, and I find them hard to listen to with patience. In Sinead's case, the shock value of her performance of this particular song choice gets dulled over time as people forget who she is and why her singing this is supposed to be funny.

The Nordine pieces, which bookend the album, really demand good headphones for best appreciation, and reward repeated listening. Cruising thru quotes of ee cummings, with puzzling snatches of what seems to be an audio montage of soundtrack clips from old Disney park attractions, and other spooky imagery, he conjures up a tour thru a darkened, haunted vault of musty film cans and ragged posters, the perfect place for an adult to look back on childhood perceptions and potentials and compare his youthful fantasies with the cold realities and incomplete goals and disappointments of old age. Pretty heavy stuff. Yet it manages to finish, if not upbeat, still, with a sense that we still have time left to wring meaning from our pasts, and to put ourselves on a path to personal redemption.

The whole album leaves me with this kind of feeling, as if I have passed unscathed thru something more dark and dangerous than I really understood, and survived to come out into sunlight on the other side. Like the old "dark ride" rollercoaster attractions of Disney's park, you will want to experience the ordeal of getting scared and surviving it again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Really good stuff.......2006-04-28

I picked this up on CD when it was first released and I was in college, it was always one of my dirty pleasures packed next to harder, grungier, and/or funkier stuff. Well, most of the other stuff has not stood the test of time too well, but Stay Awake still comes out every once in a while. Like the earlier reviewer, I frequently sing my daughters to sleep with Blue Shadows on the Trail ala Syd Straw, and my 2 year old has taken to singing along with me. My one complaint is the medley style of the tracks... some tunes rate an individual track, while other tracks might have three or four tunes faded together. Plenty of different styles on here to satisfy a wide variety of tastes, but it's the purer and more sentimental ones that have always stuck with me. I strongly disagree with the reviewer who thinks Aaron Neville was trying to sex up the Mickey Mouse Club march, I've always felt that his version is laced more with plaintive nostalgia than anything prurient. I've always wished that somebody would put together a Stay Awake 2, but if that means Jessica Simpson gets called in to remake Hakuna Matata, I'll pass.

3 out of 5 stars It's just okay.......2006-08-18

I listened to this song and thought it was just okay. I don't the understand the rave reviews for this cd. If you're looking for an excellent nu soul cd, get "The Love Experience" by Raheem DeVaughn. He is excellent!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Cd.... extremely thought provoking.......2006-01-31

I love this CD... Its almost hard to put into words how excellent of an artist Raphael Saadiq is. Each song as a unique flow and style, there's not a single song that doesn't have immense artist value. My favorite song on the cd is "Blind Man". The song is so, so deep. And if u can relate to the words, the meaning in any way... whether its on the surface, or deeper for some... it's just an awesome track, full of heart and sincerity. Raphael speaks to the Truth of music and Expression throughout this CD with perfection. It's a work of art and I'm very impressed. If u get the CD, I'm certain you will be impressed as well. Its music for the mind and u have to be in an appreciative state to embrace the vibe this CD puts out.

5 out of 5 stars Greatness!.......2005-10-16

I just dusted this one off and remembered that I had not written a review for it but I couped the week it dropped. Saadiq himself is Instant Vintage. Since Toni, Tony, Tone he has matured while still maintaining his musical genius and classy style. This whole project is so eclectic, R & B, and HipHop all in one breath that you can't go wrong. Lyrics that make you think, react, feel. Every track is one that I can appreciate. They are all my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars What an appropriate title!.......2005-10-04

I instantly liked EVERY song on this cd and am glad to see that there are artists out there still making REAL music.

      Album Details

The Pleasures of Drinking have Been Celebrated in Music Throughout History, and on 'rhythm and Booze' We've Gathered Together a Selection of Tracks Written Specifically on the Subject of Alcohol, with the Occasional Reference to the Female of the Species. The Tracks Are all from the Height of the R&B Era (The 1940's-1950's), Pre-rock 'n' Roll. Heavy Drinking Has Always Been Over-glamorized and Certainly after World War Ii Excessive Behaviour was Tolerated and Accepted, Rather Than Frowned Upon. For the First Time Many People Had a Disposable Income; Money in their Pocket to Spend as They Wished. Lounges and Late-night Clubs Sprung Up all Over the Place, Either featuring Live Acts Or Housing a Jukebox. Big Swing Bands were Replaced with Smaller Ensembles, with a Tinkling Piano Or Honking Sax as the Main Focus of the Group. A Style Called 'jump Blues' Became Popular - an Energetic and Often Humorous Form of R&b.

          Album Description

106 tracks digitally re-mastered from the original acetates for the best sound ever! Compiled by John Broven, this brings together King's seminal recordings of the 50s & 60s for the Modern group. There are no less than 27 chart recordings, including four #1 R&B hits, seventeen top 10 R&B hits, & four top 100 hits. This Vintage Years box was put together with great care, and was not a rush job. Managing Director Roger Armstrong spent many months analyzing the Ace archive of over 2,000 B.B. King tapes to select the best (and correct) masters. Duncan Cowell at Sound Mastering Ltd did the crucial post-production work. The sound is sparkling. Never before has the original studio 'room' ambience of classic numbers such as "3 O'Clock Blues" and "Please Love Me" been heard with such clarity and zest.

The individual CDs here can be summarized as follows:

CD1, "The Great B.B." contains many of the big hits readily associated with B.B. that he still plays to this day.

CD2, "Memphis Blues'n'Boogie" is a look at the rare recordings of the early 1950s engineered by Sam Phillips in Memphis, followed by those directed by Bill Harvey in Houston. Session-by-session, you can see B.B. finding his own style.

CD3, "Take A Swing With Me" covers the mid-late 1950s when B.B. was touring constantly, and Maxwell Davis became the music director. By this time, the blues market had started to dip, leading B.B. to record in a variety of styles from R&B, rock'n'roll, pop and doo wop to jazz and gospel.

CD4, "King Of The Blues" is where B.B. establishes his blues mastery as his association with Modern Records draws to an end.

The set consists of four jewel cased CDs and a 74-page book housed in a beautiful 12" x 6" x 1-1/2" box. Ace Records/UK. 2002.

4 out of 5 stars Very impressive. And too much for most listeners.......2004-08-01

This handsomely packaged 4-disc box set brings together the vast majority of B.B. King's 50s and 60s recordings for the various labels in the Modern family.

King's many excellent 50s singles are often overlooked by compilers, which means that those who "only" own, say "The Anthology" or MCA/Chess's "Greatest Hits" will find that 95% of this material is new to them.
The large 76-page booklet is thoroughly researched and well-written, and each individual CD focuses on a theme of sort: Disc one concentrates on hits like "Sweet Little Angel", "Sweet Sixteen", "How Blue Can You Get" "3 O'Clock Blues", "Did You Ever Love A Woman" etc, and it is the best and most varied, with numerous highlights and only a couple of clunkers (two boring, saccharine ballads).
The disc titled "Memphis Blues 'n' Boogie" is probably the least exciting...the material is consistent but unvaried with very few real highlights. The third disc is devoted to King's more or less succesful forays into soul, gospel, doo wop, and rock & roll, and the final one, "King Of The Blues", focuses on King's urbane 60s recordings.

Serious B.B. King fans will want to add this set to their collection right away, but more casual fans will probably find that five hours of B.B. King is just too much. You can get the best of these 106 recordings on "Do The Boogie: B.B. King's Early 50s Classics" and the twofer CD reissue of his first to LPs, "Singing' The Blues/The Blues", and most people will be happy with that, especially since much of King's output in the 50s and 60s (and 70s, 80s, and 90s output for that matter) was more consistent than varied.
