It was not too long ago that the dance music scene began its courtship and eventual love affair with french house, with artists such as Daft Punk, Air, Dimitri from Paris, Erik Rug, Etienne de Crecy, Alex Gopher and Laurent Garnier recieving critical claim for producing a sound unlike anything heard before. The french "touch" scene's ecclectic mix of funky filtered disco sampled beats, and warm fuzzy analog sounds became a staple of house DJ's round the globe and continues to be today.

The Future Sound of Paris is exactly what one would think it to be upon listening. Made in 1997, this amazing mix is the sound of french house before the mainstream got hold of it, with such artists as Erik Rug, Dimitri from Paris, Phillipe Zdar (the man behind Cassius), and Etienne De Crecy forging a template for most french tunes you hear today.

Starting off with Tommy Hools' jazzy hip hop of "Barcelone", we travel through thumping house reminiscent of Daft Punk's "Homework" (Motorbass' "1980"), loungy jazz Dimitri From Paris style, a la his Sacrebleu and Live at the Playboy Mansion ("Dim's jazz"), disco house (Ark's "Absynth"), old school breakbeat (Zend Avesta's "South of Heaven") and the chilled out out funk of La Chatte Rouge's "Affaires a Faire" (which also featured on Etienne de Crecy's Super Discount compilation).

This album is a must for anyone with an interest in french house and excellent for beginners who want to know where it all got started before artists like Daft Punk, St Germain and Dimitri From Paris became household names. Great listening for the dance floor and for those needing to chill out for a while. Vive le Francaise!
