"In The Summertime" and all seasons its a Nice Day! .......2007-07-03
As the author of the Jefferson Airplane book "Take Me To A Circus Tent" and a former radio disc-jockey, I am often asked to write and or discuss various recordings from the 60's and 70's.
Are you ready for Volume 3? "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)" - (Melanie) is the proper opening track. A tremendous vocal by Melanie and maybe her best gets the party started.
"Tighter, Tighter" - (Alive & Kicking) is everything you wanted in a short rock and roll tune. Great energy and a true 1970's classic!
"Green-Eyed Lady" - (Sugarloaf) One of the tunes that stood the test of time both as a Top 40 hit and often as the main course on the classic rockers! The keyboards will hook you immediately.
"Indiana Wants Me" - (R. Dean Taylor) If you listen to this song one time or twenty-seven, you always feel as if you are experiencing the character's run from the law as it happens. Tremendous imagery through the well constructed lyrics.
Only pitfall is the total playing time of the disc!
Enjoy the music and be well,
Craig Fenton

Tighter, Tighter.......2006-02-02
I bought this CD for Alive And Kicking's Song "Tighter, Tighter"
The other songs on this CD are good, Lots of great songs but Tighter, Tighter is the BOMB, If you buy this CD for just this song, it is money well spent!
Have A Nice Day; Not As Good As Volumes 1 & 2 But Good !.......2005-09-15
Although this Volume 3 of the Have A Nice Day series isn't as strong from start to finish as Volume's 1 & 2 it does have it's share of outstanding Gems. Two of them are, Lay Down (Candles In The Rain), sung by Melanie; With The Edwin Hawkins Singers and, Green Eyed Lady, by Sugarloaf. The Partridge Family's, I Think I Love You, was # 1 in November 1970 and it is also here. The Legendary Jerry Reed's, Amos Moses, reached the Top 10 In March 1971 and Brian Hyland had a # 3 smash in December 1970 with, Gypsy Woman, and both of them are also here but THE highlight of this Volume 3 compilation is Alive & Kicking's, Tighter Tighter. This song was a Top 10 Hit In August 1970 and should have went to # 1 but didn't. Along with, Gypsy Woman, it is definitely my favorite on this Disc!
These twelve songs peaked between July 1970 and August 1971. Volume 3 is definitely a worthwhile purchase. I mean afterall.....Back in the 70s I owned most of these twelve songs either on Vinyl or Tape and they have never sounded better than they do on this CD. Isn't technology amazing! 3.5 Stars
Final Note: I own both the cassette and the CD of this Volume 3 and the CD has twelve tunes while the cassette only has ten. The two extra tracks on the CD are Bobby Sherman's Top 10 Hit, Julie; Do Ya Love Me, and Punch's, Fallin Lady. Both are good tunes.
+ 1/2 stars...Some of the Biggest Hits of 1970.......2004-02-20
That Rhino Records has kept this series in print proves that there's is still a market for these songs. And while I have at least twenty of these titles in my collection, the current crop of pay-per-download websites gives the consumer total control over song selection, making these kinds of collections more and more obsolete when you consider that you're still paying a dollar per song either way.
Like the previous volumes, it's a mixed bag of mostly MOR pop hits from one- and two-hit wonders. In fact, only three of these artists had any kind of extended musical career. Unlike Rhino's Sixties-oriented TOP ROCK 'N' ROLL series, which included many artists with multiple hits, the HAVE A NICE DAY series does not include major acts of the period like Rod Stewart, Three Dog Night or the Carpenters. These are --in many cases--songs that are infrequently anthologized, giving you a broader look at the early Seventies. [Each of these songs, by the way, were released in 1970.]
In addition, most of these were Top 10 hits (although "Fallin' Lady" didn't even dent the Top 40), and half of them were million sellers like the gospel-influenced "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," the quirky "In the Summertime," Bryan Hyland's lone Seventies smash "Gypsy Woman," the Partridge Family's signature song "I Think I Love You," the countrified funk of Jerry Reed's novelty "Amos Moses" and Bobby Sherman's schmaltzy "Julie, Do Ya Love Me." These are all original hit versions and the sound quality is empeccable. It's just a matter of how badly you want each of these songs.
Good mix of '70s pop sounds.......2000-06-29
Volume III of the Superhits Series provides a solid musical sampling of the kaleidoscope of sounds and influences that made up early 70s pop. From the bubblegummy "I Think I Love You" to the borderline hard "Green-Eyed Lady", this disc has it all.
There is Melanie's Joplin-esque "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", a truly marvelous song, and R. Dean Taylor's hard-to-find, country-influenced "Indiana Wants Me." Jerry Reed's "Amos Moses" has an even stronger country flavor and Bobby Bloom's "Montego Bay" features a gentle hint of calypso sound.
Although not expensive, it is hard to classify this disc as a top value. Like all of the offerings in the series, Volume III contains only twelve tracks, and the last two are virtual throw aways. However, considering the investment of time that would be required to locate all of these relatively obscure tunes, this is still quite a bargain.

It seems like only yesterday that MTV signed on with the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star." But it's been long enough to inspire a comprehensive collection on Rhino Records recalling the tunes that got us through the Reagan years. The first five volumes of Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Hits of the '80s compile songs ranging from influential ("Pop Muzak" by M and "Money" by the Flying Lizards), to dumb fun ("I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow and "Turning Japanese" by the Vapors), to shoulda-stayed-forgotten ("I Ran (So Far Away)" by Flock of Seagulls and "Love Plus One" by Haircut 100). The weird thing is how current it all sounds. In no time at all, we'll be listening to We're All Losers, Baby: Alternative Rock Wonders of the '90s, featuring similar throwaways by Radiohead, Blind Melon, Beck, and Crash Test Dummies. --Jim DeRogatis

New Wave Dance Hits: Just Can't Get Enough, Vol. 1..........2007-06-02
Cruel to be Kind - Nick Lowe - that was my song at the time. New Wave was alive and well in 1981. Four stars overall!
Some good stuff from the edge of the 80's.......2004-06-07
It could be argued that much of what's included in this set actually belonged on a 70's collection, but that's beside the point. You get pretty good bang for the buck with this disc unless you have already invested in another collection that includes some of the more common songs on here. (By common I mean songs like The Knack's "My Sharona". Good, but is it new wave?) By contrast, songs like Blondie's "One Way Or Another", Nick Lowe's excellent "Cruel To Be Kind", Graham Parker's likewise brilliant "Local Girls", Dave Edmunds' "Girls Talk" or The Flying Lizards' version of "Money", are nothing short of brilliant inclusions. Plastic Bertrand's "Ca Plane Pour Moi" never struck me as great, but when I played this disc in the car with my daughter and her friends one day, they shocked me by singing along with the song word for word. Turns out it made a Mary Kate & Ashley movie soundtrack. (And I haven't seen Vol. 1 since.) Great stuff, but "Video Killed The Radio Star"? Was that necessary?
Excellent faire for the 80's enthusiast's.......2003-09-30
A few of these songs on this disc are pretty common amongst 80's fans (Blondie's One Way or Another, Nick Lowe's Cruel to Be Kind, The Knack's My Sharona and The Buggles VKtRS) but there are a few seriously excellent unknown gems on this disc that a majority of the people will enjoy I think. Starting with Ca Plane Pour Moi from Plastic Bertrand, then skipping to Graham Parker's Local Girls. The highlight of the disc is Tim Curry's (Rocky Horror Picture Show) insane song, I Do the Rock which seems to get better with every listen. Out of the entire collection, I give this one a rating of 7.5 out of 10
A decent sampling of early New Wave hits (dancing optional).......2002-12-23
New Wave was the term used to describe the music that came after punk rock in the late 1970s and early 1980s, although certainly it included post-punk music as well. However, I never really thought of it sas "dance" music, which means nothing because I never went dancing to disco, techno, or anything in between. So this might be Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" but I just think of it as a solid New Wave collection. New Wave might have been the pop music of its time, but it retained the vigor and irreverence of punk music as well as being musically more sophisticated with its interest in electronics and such. This collection has the virtue of including the songs that defined the change in music, namely the Knack's "My Sharona," the Ramones "Rock & Roll High School," and the song that heralded the creation of MTV, "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. These sixteen tracks are devoted more to the one-hit wonders like Tim Curry's "I Do the Rock" and "Gidget Goes to Hell" by Suburban Lawns rather than the big name groups like Blondie (Nick Lowe and Graham Parker are not quite in Deborah Harry's league). But once you get beyond "One Way or Another" you are dealing with Plastic Bertrand and the Flying Lizards rather than Duran Duran, Culture Club, and the Pretends, which is fine, because the point of a hit collection like this one is to add songs you do not have to your music library. In that regard, Volume 1 of "New Wave Dance Hits" should easily provide you with a half-dozen songs worth having.
Riding The Wave.......2001-07-17
The first volume of Rhino's New Wave Dance Hits collection is a superb collection of songs that range from big hits to obscure gems. "My Sharona" by The Knack was the number one single of the year from 1979 and despite the fact that never became the new Beatles, the song is a classic with it's hypnotic, thumping bass line and adolescent lyrics. Blondie's obsessive "One Way Or Another" has a punk sneer with a pop gloss. The Buggles' "Video Killed The Radio Star" is best known as the first video ever played on MTV, but it is a fun song that has held up well over the years. Veteran rocker Dave Edmunds does a roaring version of Elvis Costello's "Girls Talk" while Graham Parker has fun on the sprightly "Local Girls". Rock Horror star Tim Curry does a credible job on "I Do The Rock" and The Flying Lizards put a new spin on the old chestnut "Money (That's What I Want)". The set would be worth buying alone for Nick Lowe's power pop masterpiece "Cruel To Be Kind". The song was Mr. Lowe's lone hit in the US and is a perfectly crafted piece of music that stands up against anything to come out this era.

Customer Reviews:
WOW! Was "Mickey" a GREAT song, or what?!.......2004-10-26
Nope, in fact it was one of the songs that I hated the first time I heard it and can still gather up a load of revulsion for today. The oddball tune that drags this collection up to the .500 line is Pete Shelley's "Homo Sapien". Funny, catchy and just plain clever, but I worry about Pete. Other than that volume 5 barely trips the meter. Welcome to the middle of the new wave road.
Nearly Quintessential...Nearly.......2002-05-24
My biggest complaint about this particular album is the inclusion of "Hold onto Something" by Great Buildings. Many of these songs define my days in high school, but for the life of me I can't remember ever hearing of this band. However, I do remember hearing this song...or one very much like it -- Joe Jackson's incredibly popular song titled, "I'm the Man," from his album, "I'm the Man" (1979), which was hugely popular through the early eighties.
Re-mixing this album with the correct song would help this album's rating a lot.
Those Were The Days-- Great New Wave Collection!.......2001-08-18
The best entry in Rhino's awesome "New Wave Hits" series.(Volume 1 which covers the late 70's is also excellent). All 16 songs are culled from 1982 which was indeed a very good year for pop music. Haircut One Hundred's "Love Plus One" and Flock of Seagulls' "I Ran" were anthems of the(then) young MTV Generation. These quirky video darlings raged like a hurricane of fresh air in the face of bland corporate schlock which hogged the airwaves. Songs like the Go Go's "Vacation" and Tommy Tutone's "867-5309" were not only pure fun-- they were also well-crafted 3-minute pop gems. In fact, nearly every tune on volume 5 is cut from the same intelligent pop mold. Other standouts from this set include the vastly underrated Marshall Crenshaw's "Someday Someway", The Jam's "A Town Called Malice" and Soft Cell's absurdly humorous "Sex Dwarf". The only weak cuts are Gang of Four's "Man in Uniform" and the truly horrible "Art of Parties" by Japan. Overall, this is a fantastic collection which harkens back to a truly innovative time in pop music-- a brief time when catchy Hit Singles ruled and all possibilities seemed endless.
Best In The Series.......2001-07-07
This is my favorite of the series. Actually there are only two cuts that I consider weak ("Kids in America" and "Mickey"). ALl the rest are great little slices of the variety and creativeness of 80's new wave rock. Good c.d. to have.
Just Can't Get Enough vol. 5.......2000-07-10
I have 8 of the cd's in this series, and plan on getting the rest. This one is one of my favorite of the series. The song "Love Plus One" by Haircut One Hundred is a fabulous song. There are many other gems as well, such as "I Want Candy", "Someday, Someway" and "I Ran (So Far Away)". There are many obscure songs on here, so don't expect to know them all, unless you had an unbelievable vinyl collection in the 80's. The music hear can fit almost any mood you may be feeling. Pick it up and enjoy.

A dynamic power-pop collection featuring new and old tracks by some of the leading groups of the last ten years, including Dwight Twilley, the Shoes, the Rubinoos, and Tommy Keene. The music on Yellow Pills is strong enough to convert casual fans into hardcore power-pop fanatics. - Stephen Thomas Erlewine, AMG

This is one of the best power pop collections ever put out! The Adam Schmitt track is worth the price alone but then you get songs by Devin Hill, a great (new!) Cowsills song and a very cool song by pre-MTV Enuff Znuff. Not to mention the Rubinoos, Three Hour Tour and many others. Not a bad track in the bunch!!!

Chandos's Grainger Edition brings yet another cornucopia of delights delivered with indefatigable dedication and twinkling charisma by Richard Hickox and the BBC Philharmonic. The formula is the same as on this team's first and second volumes of Grainger's orchestral music, with tried-and-trusted nuggets such as Green Bushes and Colonial Song (both given here in particularly lavish orchestrations from 1905-06 and 1919, respectively) sitting alongside genuine rarities like The Merry King (based on a folk tune from West Sussex and boasting a seductively ornate piano contribution) and the amazingly colorful English Dance No.1 (a riot of a piece that prompted Gabriel Fauré to exclaim: "It's as if the total population were a-dancing!"). Perhaps the most startlingly original items here were conceived for wind band, namely the bracingly tangy Hill Song No.2 and that ambitious, extraordinarily titled essay The Power of Rome and the Christian Heart (which also draws on material from the first movement of Grainger's glorious Danish Folk Song Suite). Chandos's thrillingly realistic sonics fairly leap from the loudspeakers. All told, this disc is not to be missed. --Andrew Achenbach

Get this series while it's still available..........2005-08-15
Oglio records was one of the early labels to bring us hard to find new wave 12" singles on compilations, and few labels have managed to keep up with it. Get them before sellers start charging ridiculous prices for them. Only a few disappointments on this volume. Blancmange-why the 7" of Don't Tell Me, and not the 12"? And EBN OZN is not the full 12" version-perhaps it's the album version? Track times on this volume:
1. chamber of hellos (3:55)
2. Numbers with wings (4:40)
3. clean clean (3:52)
4. Yellow pills (4:16)
5. What I like about you (2:55)
6. What does sex mean to me (4:49)
7. Making plans for Nigel (4:11)
8. She talks in stereo (3:58)
9. The fanatic (3:34)
10. Don't tell me (3:30)
11. AEIOU (6:31)
12. Tainted love (8:55)

Customer Reviews:
Found my rarity!!!!.......2007-04-03
I bought this for Love & Kisses "Romeo & Juliet" which is different to Alec Constandinos' version.
The L&K version appears on the Thank God It's Friday film but NOT on the soundtrack dammit!!!!!!
Fantastic! A Nice Way to Keep Hustling!.......2007-03-24
The CD arrived on time. The tracks are really good. It starts with Dan Hartman's "Vertigo/Relight My Fire." Two Costandinos hits such as "Romeo & Juliet", and "I've Found Love" are just two of the tracks that one does not dare to miss. It surely gets one to hustle and drives one to crave for more music of this type. This is one volume that disco music lovers have to get.
