Great CD!.......2007-01-11
I like this CD a lot. She's like Fiona Apple but with the essence of an earlier era. Rockin' and soulful. I like it.
awesome.......2006-01-30
This album is great. Colleen is a great singer and the music is exceptional. My most favorite songs are: "St. Christopher" "It Was Raining" "King of Brooklyn" "Liquor Store" "Left" and "If I Died In Your Arms". I don't really like "Walk With Me" but its not torture.
Punky lounge singer???.......2006-01-04
Too bad there are some folks out there ripping this album, because they thought it was someone else. Oh well, that's the way some folks are...
Anyway, this is a pretty solid album. Pretty diverse selection of styles... Wouldn't be surprised to hear some of this in a nice nightclub or a seedy strip bar. On a few tunes, she really belts it out! It's smoky, sexy, jazzy, punkish, brassy, b#llsy, b$tchy with a pinch of burlesque-y gurl power. Total of 18 tracks, but would have been better if they cut a few off. It's an excellent listen, but some of the songs start to run together, simply because there are so many. Personal favorite is track 2, "You Are the Best Thing and the Worst Thing". Check it out. If you made it this far to find this album, then you will probably like it.
Wicked fun.......2005-12-30
Stumbled across this CD and it hasn't let me go since! She has amazing vocals, and the songs are catchy and haunting. Favorite tracks include Heart Sized Crush and King of Brooklyn, but I love them all! On constant replay in my car, at home, and at work.
story of devil doll.......2005-12-16
Italy, 1987, Mr.Doctor introduced 'Mark of the Beast', under the artist name 'Devil Doll', he's created numerous masterpieces, unlike anything ever composed...
It isn't right for THIS band to use the name 'Devil Doll', Mr.Doctor has earned the name, and anybody familiar with his work will only laugh at THIS band.

Hank & Bob would roll in their graves Dancin!!!!.......2006-01-17
Some of the best Honky-Tonk and Western Swing EVER put down in any era. Jeremy Wakefied's steel playing is superb and the band just has a great boogie beat. Keep it up guys, were all depending on ya!
Amazing - if you love western swing you'll love this band.......2005-06-01
This is one of my favorite CDs; it's on heavy rotation in my car. The first time I heard it I would have sworn up and down that it was a late 40's band or somebody like Ernest Tubb working with different musicians. But the Lucky Stars put their own brand of backbeat magic into everything they do; the songwriting, the amazing solos, and Sage's fantastic vocals make this a stellar recording. And if they don't list their new album for sale soon I may die (hint hint). Nice work fellas, please keep it coming and tour frequently!
A highly pleasurable cd of authentic sounding 50's western.......2004-05-29
A highly pleasurable cd of authentic sounding 50's western swing. Although there are touches of rockabilly, the majority of this appelaing cd is made up of vintage sounding late 40's thru 50's Holywood western swing. Great musiscians, in the Big Sandy tradition, and fine tight solos, by this great band. If you like Big Sandy or Ray Condo's western swing combos, you are likely to liek this too, although it's more twangy than Big Sandy or Ray Condo. A fun and very swinging cd.
Wow........2004-02-29
I honestly did not think it was possible to make music this good.
5 Stars for the Lucky Stars.......2003-04-12
I was recently lucky enough to catch one of their live performances. They dazzled everyone with their fantastic singing/musicianship/stage presence/and lyrics. I just had to pick up this CD and I must say that they are now one of my favorite acts/bands. If you're a fan of western swing, pick this CD up, you won't be sorry.....

Customer Reviews:
Poetic Slam-dunk.......2000-01-24
Silent Films is a poetic slam-dunk. It is a rare coin which seamlessly combines classical and jazz musical elements in a way which renders boundaries between the two meaningless. All of the cuts are original compositions by Weistrop, Brock and Langford who, though aware of their roots, unabashedly blaze their own trail. The music's power comes from both its originality and the remarkable musical ability of these Chicago Jazzers. The combination of violin (Brock) and guitar (Weistrop) is an untraditional, and in this case, fortuitous choice, creating a lyrical point- counterpoint which percolates throughout. Langford (bass) and Dowd (drums) frame the music with solid and lusty lines, pointing the way for the nuances and intricacies of the music. While all of the pieces have great merit, three deserve special mention, because they aptly capture the spirit and talent of Spazztet. In the opening cut, "Coffee Achiever, written by Brock, the ensemble shows a remarkable and dazzling ability to move in and out of classical and jazz themes which together invigorate this hauntingly beautiful piece. The members of the ensemble, with much dexterity, project their individual and group voices at once, a kind of two sided coin, where individuality and togetherness comes together brilliantly. Langford's "Troy" is rich with pathos, written with a rare subtelty of expression which highlight's both his and Spazztet's emotional depth. It is altogether a highly inventive piece with its very own compass. "That" is Weistrop's Oriental Express. It is by turns exotic, dangerous, fanciful and unforgettable. The musicans ride this express with a brio and elan which is awesome. "That", played with an irrepressible originality and tenacious soulfulness, lands Spazztet in the vanguard of jazz groups. Finally, buyer beware. There is a hidden track (hint: wait a minute or so after last piece) which should not be missed because it shows that these sterling jazzers can rock hard too.
Why EVERYONE should buy this CD.......2000-01-19
This group is exciting. I've never heard anything like it before. They groove, they swing HARD, they rock! It's a sound that is immediately distinct, yet it doesn't sound like four young, lost musicians trying to be different for the SAKE of being different. There is a deep process that draws the listener into each song like a sonic canvas. Anyone interested in modern jazz violin should definitely check this out! The book is being rewritten. The guitar player has chops (and changes) to burn, and the bass player and drummer hook up like one instrument. The compositions are excellent. Each track tells a different story and evokes a specific mood that is varied throughout the course of the CD. Be on the lookout for a secret track at the end of the last song (it will shock and delight). If this is any example of what's going on in Chicago, let the rest of the world take heed!

Album Description
GC Records is an independent label featuring singer/trombonist Gerard Carelli performing classic american standards and Carelli orginals.
Customer Reviews:
Superb trombone playing and vocals.......2002-04-18
Gerard Carelli presents an interesting combination of talents for a jazz performer - he is both an excellent trombonist and an accomplished singer. His new CD, "Lucky To Be Me", provides listeners with a wonderful opportunity to hear both of these skills.
Carelli is a graduate of the University of North Texas, where he played in the legendary 1:00 Lab Band. He also performed in Ray Charles' touring band, as well as numerous Broadway shows. And he has worked as a sideman with singers Rosemary Clooney and Mel Torme.
The years he spent in the company of these great vocalists no-doubt influenced Carelli's musical style. His playing and singing are both heavily rooted in swing and traditional jazz. His new CD stays true to the swing sound thanks to the outstanding work of his sidemen, including pianist and arranger John Oddo, trumpeter Randy Sandke, and reedman Dan Block.
Fans of Rosemary Clooney will no doubt recognize John Oddo as her long-time collaborator and musical director for her recent Concord CD's. Likewise, swing fans will know seasoned New York trumpeter Randy Sandke as one of the mainstays of the traditional and swing scene. Specializing in the music of past jazz trumpet masters, Sandke has performed with Vince Giordano's Nighthawks and has led a number of outstanding recording dates for Nagel-Hayer records.
For this CD, Carelli has chosen a program of thirteen standards and one original composition, "Well Worth Waiting For", a sentimental tribute to his first born son Marcello, which also includes some nice clarinet work by Dan Block. "Surrey With the Fringe On Top" is performed as an instrumental and features Carelli in an excellent trombone solo. Carelli's horn is also heard in a relaxed ballad rendition of "How Are Things In Glocca Mora." Also enjoyable is the little heard but very clever Cole Porter tune "Leader of a Big-Time Band," and the group's version of Irving Berlin's classic "Always", which Carelli personalizes by singing the seldom-heard verse.
Though Carelli does not possess the rich pipes of Sinatra (but who ever will?) he is a pleasing and swinging jazz singer whose interpretations owe greatly to his understanding and ability to communicate the messages in the lyrics of his songs. Carelli performs regularly with his combo in the New York City area, and if you get the chance I would highly recommend spending an evening swinging and dancing to his enjoyable music. Otherwise, make sure you get this CD.
