These guys are the best. .......2006-02-25
This latest CD by the Gibson Brothers is just as good as their previous CD's . It has precise intrumentals combined with great song writing. The words of their songs tell real stories. Plus, they have the best brother singing sound I've ever heard. Their voice blending and harmonies are awesome.
A superlative and authoritative statement of their explosive sound.......2006-02-13
Playing Time - 49:56 -- Bassist Mike Barber's involvement with Eric and Leigh Gibson as co-producers of this project might have led to the somewhat heavy bass in this album's mix. Because the Gibsons walk on both bluegrass and acoustic country roads, it was probably mixed this way to simulate a more country-like sound full of the low-end audio spectrum. Eric plays banjo and guitar; Leigh plays guitar. In keeping with their signature sound, vocals emphasize brother duet arrangements. Andrea Zonn guests as the harmony singer with Eric on his self-penned "We Won't Dance Again."
The 15 songs on "Red Letter Day" include five originals and ten others from Kieran Kane, Chris Knight, Bruce Robison, Ray Charles, Mark Howard & Kay Susan Taylor and others. Besides Zonn, other guests include Ronnie McCoury (mandolin, mandola), Jason Carter (fiddle), Marc MacGlashan (mandolin), Sam Zucchini (percussion), Russ Pahl (steel guitar, Wah guitar, dobro), Josh Williams (mandolin) and Clayton Campbell (fiddle). When songs include both mandolin and percussion, I listen carefully to ascertain if there are any conflicts. On "The Barn Song," "As Long As There's You," and "One More Try," we find that MacGlashan and Zucchini complement each other nicely, largely as a result of MacGlashan's use of tremolos and fills. The former and latter were both written by Leigh Gibson.
In their earlier days, the Gibsons believed that "less is more," and sparse arrangements weren't including fiddle or mandolin. After their first album on the Big Elm label in 1994, they signed with the Hay Holler label. Winning the 1998 IBMA Emerging Artist Award, the brothers contracted with Ceili Records. In 2003, we were treated to their first Sugar Hill Records release (Bona Fide - SUG-CD-3965) that offered 9 songs written or co-written by one or both of the Gibsons. Now, the brothers who were raised on a dairy farm in upstate New York have another great release under their belts. There's a little less of their own original material on their second Sugar Hill release, and I wish their little sis might've been invited to sing harmony again. However, their repertoire continues to characterized by very strong material, many songs that have hard-hitting stories to tell or paint vivid portraits of people. The Gibson Brothers fuller and more abdominal brand of bluegrass might be a bit heavy on the low-end, but that gives it both full body and mental capacity. "Red Letter Day" is a superlative and authoritative statement of their explosive sound. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

The first two albums by Buffalo Tom showed that the Massachusetts trio had studied its heroes (Dinosaur Jr., Husker Du), learned their guitar-rock vocabulary, and mastered the ability to put it across. But the band didn't have much original to add, and although Let Me Come Over and Birdbrain were pleasant listening, they were quickly forgotten. Big Red Letter Day is more dynamic, peeling away the layers of fuzz guitar to reveal acoustic guitar and Bill Janovitz' simple but compelling vocal melodies. The album emphasizes the lyrics, which stand up to the scrutiny, and "Soda Jerk," "Would Not Be Denied," and "Anything That Way" are the best songs the band has written. --Jim DeRogatis

Simply the best.......2007-06-18
I've got a few thousand albums and this is my favorite. Enuf said.
Comfortable, Straight-Ahead Rock.......2005-06-20
I found this in the used section a few days ago, and have been traveling around with it. This band has a sound kinda like Counting Crows or Gin Blossoms, with maybe a touch of John Mellencamp at times. It's not twang-y roots rock / but does feel kinda indie.
It's versatile, adult-feeling music. The lyrics speak a lot about the messiness of life, and the regrets we try to let go of. I find it likeable.
The vocals can be kinda raspy at times, and I was tempted to ding it for that and give it 3 stars... but I decided 4 is supportable.
"The moon was full your whisky sour".......2004-05-02
I bought Big Red Letter Day back in the early 1990s during my first year in college and it was one of my most played CDs at the time. Playing it now 11 years later, it still sounds great. Even though it was classified as "alternative" with "Sodajerk" getting decent play on MTV's 120 Minutes during its release, it is really just good, solid rock 'n roll with some Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. influence and a smidgen of country sound here and there. No song jumps out on this album, but there is nothing weak here either. It is a good CD to pop in and hit "repeat all."
Buffalo Tom was a trio formed in 1986 in Massachusetts who built up a following with fuzz-laden guitars, effervescent melodies and muscle-building tours. Big Red Letter Day was the band's major label debut. The band made a little news when a magazine that had a regular "Cute Band Alert" section, changed the title to "Cute Drummer Alert" especially for BT drummer Tom Maginnis (I think the other two guys are cute, too). Guitarist Bill Janovitz does most of the vocal duties. He has a good, no nonsense rock 'n roll voice. Bassist Chris Colbourne provides vocals on "My Responsibility" and "Late at Night," seemingly about troubled fatherhood. These songs are a little less testosterone-driven. Colbourne does not have a very strong voice but the songs are catchy. I still find myself humming "Late at Night." Some songs are a little slower than others, but there are no true ballads here. Other tracks just rock like "Tree House" that ends with some gospel singing by the Water Sisters. Big Red Letter Day is a solid CD that has aged very well.
Very good all around.......2003-08-17
Even though there songs have been used on commercials, people still don't who this group is. And that is a shame. There light rock sounds are calming. I love this album.
An overlooked gem.......2002-01-26
The kiss of death for Buffalo Tom might have been getting stuck with the "alternative" label. Because to call them "alternative" was to deny them the mass audience they so richly deserved.
Buffalo Tom, not a guy but a Boston-based trio, skillfully transformed traditional song styles into idiosyncratic rockers and electric ballads, in the same way that REM transformed "New Southern Rock" into something much more. Forget the comparisons to Dinosaur Jr.: this band, and Big Red Letter Day, are successful on their own terms.
Produced by the Robb Brothers, responsible for producing hitmakers like Neil Diamond, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, the Bay City Rollers and fellow-Bostonians the Lemonheads, the CD is probably Buffalo Tom's most accessible, featuring deceptively simple melodies, dynamic guitars, and some of the band's best lyrics.
The CD opens with the confident "Sodajerk", which features the Water Sisters (Rolling Stones) and the immortal opening lines: "Watch an eyeball/take a free fall/At the mention of a name/In its socket/Like a rocket/It rises just the same."
Other standouts include "My Responsibility" (and the great lyrics, "I don't like that joke, and I don't want to smell like smoke"), "Torch Singer" and the rocking "Tree House" and "Dry Land".
Overlooked in its day, Big Red Letter Day is an easy gem that's well deserving of your hard-earned dollars.

3.7/10.0 & 3.5/10.0, respectively.......2006-07-24
What I find most disconcerting about emo is its self-consciousness. An "emo" musician, truly, owes everything to other people; both those who have given the musician emotional charge (girlfriends, boyfriends, parents who tell them to go to their room, etc.), and those musician charges himself (i.e., his audience). Instead of using music as a forum for expressing beauty and craft, emo musicians use it as a forum for reminiscing about spilt milk. There are forums to express that kind of emotion (livejournal and blogger primarily), but using musical expression for it is a disservice to the idea of music. Blues singers may have crooned about lynchings in local towns, but when they did, their music expressed- quite beautifully, in fact- the truth of their day. The music on Red Letter Day and Woodson, by comparison, is obsessive. It feeds on itself. The Get Up Kids are vanities, throwing themselves against the rocky shoals, not with intentions of ending consciousness, but hoping it will help their ego's image of itself. If they can write a song about it, all the better for their pocketbooks.
Now, I myself don't actually care about all that, at least not in the capacity of being a listener of music. Blasting every emo album in the universe won't help me feel any better. I don't come to music with baggage. I just want to hear something beautiful. The ratings above don't reflect how I feel about the band members, or the music genre, they reflect my evaluations of what I've heard. Emo music rarely succeeds, mostly because music itself isn't a sledgehammer, and shouldn't be used as such. But that's what the tracks on these two Extended Plays encompass. On the rare instance where the subtleties of The Get Up Kids' sound gleam through, there are moments of pleasure, but that is surrounded with a whole lot of artless guitar-wailing and lyrics about suffocating on other people's hearts. It's clear that the three strongest tracks on this album are Anne Arbour, Mass Pike, and A Newfound Interest In Massachusetts. Mostly because these are the three songs that don't crank the lead guitar amperage to unfortunate levels. In particular, A Newfound Interest, with its slow, careful build to an emotional height, which, if not sophisticated, at least sounds genuine, carries much of my grade. But, on the whole, the album's problem is an apotheosis of what is problematic with the emo genre: all the emphasis is placed on the fury; none is placed on the sound.
Why aren't the full lengths this good?.......2002-03-27
As much as I've tried to love them, I never could fully embrace The Get Up Kids. There always seemed to be some energy and passion missing from their music. These songs suprised me, however. The "Red Letter Day" portion is very good power pop that actually comes off quite energetic. The songs are quite catchy, albeit a bit surface-level. The "Woodson" half is more traditional emo fare, with "New Found Mass" sticking out as a great track. There's nothing revolutionary here, but this album is a lot of fun. The pop fan inside you will be thoroughly pleased.
This CD is ugly........2001-08-11
All the bands on [...] pretty much [...] nowadays, so they decided to take the Get Up Kids material they own and put it back out. They released an ugly Four Minute Mile "digimortal" and also did the same with this. The music's great, but be rest assured, the Get Up Kids had nothing to do with the reissuing of these EPs in one really ugly package. If you can find the EPs, buy them seperatly, besides, there's not many of them floating around out there, so they'd be like collector's items, which is cool. Fact is, I bet the Get Up Kids would rather have you download the music or burn the EPs off of your best friend Randy. They don't want you to buy this, because they don't like it. Don't be put off, these EPs are by far the Get Up Kids' best stuff, especially Woodson, which is my favorite GUK song. But my point is, here's to us fools that have no meaning. I tip my glass to you. Yar.
Would Make A Good Album.......2001-07-02
The Get Up Kids are the only band I can think of that makes better singles and bsides than the songs in their albums. If you took every single and bside song by them and put it all together, that would be their greatest album. But for now we have to settle with the Woodson/RLD compilation, still very much worth the buy. This CD allows you to hear both the whiny and wussy styles of GUK at their best. The Woodson songs are similar to those of Four Minute Mile and the RLD songs are similar to those of Something to Write Home About. This CD would make a good album if it had some more songs to it. My favorite songs are any of them involving Massachusetts and Forgive and Forget. So if you're a GUK fan and don't have Woodson or the Red Letter Day Single then definitely get this.
Woodson? More like GOODson! ..uh..nevermind........2001-05-16
Listen up people, if you ever get sick of your CDs and you're like "Dude, all rock sounds the same, I wish I could find something new," then my friends, I understand your pain. But luckily there's a cheap & easy solution. Open the door, stroll on up to your local record store and look for the combined EP's of Woodson and Red Letter Day. (If they don't have it, simply suckerpunch the weakest-looking clerk in the face and hope to God he isn't packing any surprises. After the chaos subsides, politely ask him to order it for you.) This is such a damn good CD, and one of those fresh breaths of air that we all need from time to time. These guys can work lyrics like nobody's business--on paper, they almost appear to be a short, poetic essay. But take them off the paper, toss them into your CD player and you'll find that they flow with the music, beautifully and seamlessly..It's obvious to tell they put actual thought into what they're singing. To top things off, it genuinely rocks. It's such a brilliant and hard to find mix..one that can actually make you mellow out and rock out at the same exact time. There's something very special about that. I wish the best of luck to the band and hope they continue to get the recognition they deserve. Buy this CD!

Can't spend a winter without it!.......2004-09-15
Every winter, I feel like listening to emo, and one of my favorite emo albums is this! Mass Pike and Anne Arbour are especially my favorites, and i can't imagine spending a winter without them!
Packs a Punch.......2002-06-05
This little cd gave me a karate chop to the spine. I bought this cd like 2 1/2 years ago and finally got around to reviewing it along with all my favorite cds. This cd has only 5 songs but they are some of the greatest songs I have ever heard. This cd has amazing repeat listening value. It is a little faster (more punk than emo but just barely). I would recommend this to any punk fan trying to ease their way into emo. Anne Arbour may be the most beautiful song I've ever heard. Red Letter Day is probably the first song that hooks you though. If you like this, you may like Fairweather.
Good but only for harcore fans.......2001-06-19
The Get Up Kids second E.P. "Red Letter Day" is good but there is no sense in buying it unless you are a hardcore fan. Red Letter Day was alos released on a double E.P. ("Red Letter Day/Woodson" which has both of the Get Up Kids E.Ps on it for practically the same price as purchasing one of them)and the actual song Red Letter Day is on their second album "Something to Write Home About". I don't understand what is so great about this song that we have to be forced into listening to it on 3 of the five Get Up Kids CDs. If you want some better Get Up Kids songs listen to "Valentine", "I'm a Loner Dottie, A Rebel" and their first single "Action and Action". Music from the their first album is great too but nothing compares to their second L.P.
"Last night on the Mass Pike..........2001-02-17
I fell in love with you." Mass Pike is my favorite song on this EP, however, the other 4 songs are great too. Love the alternate version to Red Letter Day. This CD is definitely worth picking up. You might want to look for the reissue with both the Red Letter Day EP and the Woodson EP on the same disc.
The Epitomy of Good Music.......2001-02-05
The Get Up Kids Red Letter Day [EP] delivers some of the band's best songs. Forgive and Forget is replete with awsome guitars and drums while Anne Arbour is strung out with thoughtful lyrics. Mass Pike combines bells and drums to provide a funky intro then goes into a sonic assault of power chords, drums, bells, and even strings. Anne Arbour is probably my favorite song on the EP. The songs are simple, yet pack a quasi-punk/emo punch that is definitivly Get Up Kids style. The lyrcis are simple at times, but they are still good, and contain verses that everyone can realate to. It took a few listenings to get into this one, but then it became a seasoned veteran in my CD player. If you are looking for something new, and haven't checked out The Get Kids yet, this CD can definetly start you out on the right track. If you like the Get Up Kids, you should aslo check out Jimmy Eat World and Alkaline Trio for some awesome music too.

Get it for #6.......2006-06-23
It's hard to believe that "Delusions of Grandeur" was never put on a regular Pet Shop Boys album, because it's among their very best songs. But then, these guys have made a career out of great throwaway B-siders. This is among the best, with that full-scale, up-tempo Pet Shops Boys sound. A fun song, and a must-have for fans.
Magnanimous and Charming.......2006-04-25
Here we find the Pet Shop Boys inbetween album snack for 1997. Instead of relying on the usual string pad backing, the boys bring actual lush strings, a more complex arrangement than can be found on the orchestration heavy "Left To My Own Devices", a heavy house beat which drops out occasionally leaving orchestral only enclaves, and a mostly continuous 16th note synth voice underlying everything, somewhat analogous to that used in "You Only Tell Me You Love Me When Your Drunk" and "Flamboyant". Neils voice, perhaps far from perfection, is interestingly at his most insidious of any Pet Shop Boy song in the last 10 years, yet the actual number itself emotes the gooey sentiment of a "Liberation" and the escapist bravado of a "Go West". After all the starts and stops, the song finally climaxes into a post-coital haze, described by a friend of mine as better than the song itself. It's quite overproduced, really, which I personally love. However, it doesn't really have the soul of some of the Pet Shop Boys finest work. I think the song sounds better on the remastered PopArt, however, this single has much else to offer. Though most Pet Shop boys dance mixes unfortunately tend towards all beat (and a boring one at that) and little vocal, the two dance mixes on this disk sound like they would be a blast in a club. Truly dark hard house. They get a bit tedious for just general listening though. Red Letter Day, though available elsewhere fits the whole mood of the disk well, which I imagine is why it was included. The production is a bit to clip-cloppy, but it's still some decent inspirational Pet Shop Boys gospel music. Nothing sounds overly dated on this disk, surprisingly, nor does it really sound like other pop from 1997. The real winners here are the two b sides. The durge "View From Your Balcony". It's perfection as a B-side to Somewhere, a very musical-like track. This is just a preface for the boys later work on the Closer To Heaven musical, where they truely unleashed their musical skills. The song glistens with simmering synths a spanish guitar and dreamscape lyrics. "Delusions of Grandeur" is a fun romp, a perfect compliment of "Red Letter Day", "Shameless", and "Go West". As some have noted in the past, the vocals could have been turned up a bit more in the mix, but it's still a fun sparkling inventive song. Overall, perhaps the songs on this single don't have the listenability of tracks from earlier Pet Shop Boys eras, but are enjoyable nonetheless.
Bernstein to a disco beat..........2003-10-19
The Pet Shop Boys have developed the tradition of releasing a single, then an album, then a few more singles, and then, releasing a remake after the album sales have died down. They did this first after the album Actually, with their variously lauded and panned remake of Always on my mind. They did this again after the album Behaviour with an innovative combination of Where the streets have no name (a U2 hit) and Can't take my eyes off of you.
Somewhere is much better known as the wonderful aria from Leonard Bernstein's (and let us not forget the Sondheim contribution) West Side Story; as much as I cringed at hearing the idea of a disco version of this (or any) song taken from the score, I have to admit I was impressed. The Pet Shop Boys put their classic sample-heavy treatment to the song, weaving into the song samples of urban turmoil and conversation that gives a 'city' feel to it (which is in keeping with West Side Story); the lyrics are preserved and don't seem that strange coming from the flat vocal interpretation of Neil Tennant. It has strong electronic instrumental crescendos which lead to a hopefulness and yet ends back in the mixture of smaller sounds and urban samples. Life in the city goes on.
This CD has two versions, one a 'radio edit' and one a longer-remixed dance version. Alas, like most dance versions, it is barely recognisable as having come from the first version. The CD also has two remixes of a song from Bilingual, Red Letter Day, one of the better songs off of a poorly-received CD.
The CD also contains two new songs (B-sides) which are interesting--A view from your balcony, a short, melancholy little song that perhaps relates back to the Romeo & Juliet motif of Somewhere. The other song, Delusions of Grandeur, is a satirical romp through the mind of a Walter Mitty-type, with delightfully funny lyrics like
In audience I receive
the media's pleas
they kiss my ring in interviews
on bended knee
In victory I'm magnanimous
and charming when
I speak exclusively
at length to CNN
The delusions go on and on...
A nice little CD, definitely worth the cost.
Hold their hand and they'll take you there........2000-07-11
This is a must for all Pet Shop Boys fans to have. This is also a must for the newcomer who might be curious to see what is so appealing about these two men. This is one of the best singles I have heard in a long time. Not just the song itself, but the many different songs that accompany it, including the several mixes that only these guys can create. The song "Somewhere" is quite simply, classic Pet Shop Boys. Orchestrations, intense sensual rhythms...it is beautiful to hear the song open with an orchestra playing. I would not be surprised to hear that this song is on the charts in other countries, since it is known that they have fans all over the world. This is another hit single by them, which some fans might have been a bit leery about checking out when hearing it was a remake of the song from the musical, West Side Story. It is, surprisingly extraordinary. And how fast it all goes! Like one big rush of adrenaline, and then its gone. Ah, the little things in life. But hearing the mix of this song, one can't help but wonder that they must have offers to do soundtracks to films. They are currently working on a musical and it is known that they produced such soundtracks as "The Crying Game" and "It Couldn't Happen Here", but it seems more and more of their music is less singing lately, and more of experimenting with your emotions; seeing what affects people the most with their changes in tempo, how they all of the sudden just stop!...and calm you down...and then gently begin again. Dare I say this mix is too precious to be played in clubs next to a hip-hop mix of a Backstreet Boys or Mariah Carey song? In a sinister way, I sincerely hope not. The other songs follow their pattern of one being unlike the other...but check out the last two tracks. "View from your balcony" and "Delusions of Grandeur". The first one is more of a romantic yearning for wanting someone; a common theme with their love poetry. A steady beat and gentle words, but one couldn't help feeling in London when hearing this. References to the city and lights bring you there from the beginning. And it's another nice song to listen to when having a glass of wine with that special someone. Delusions of Grandeur focuses more on serious issues in England; the historical rise of power and the representation of how it can be seen at times. And they seem to have the gift of making it more than just a history lesson; showing not only are the facts important but the way it's told. With as many different subjects as they have covered, they have, and always will associate emotions with music. As if each phrase that was spoken has it's own meaning, and it's own sound. If one wanted to analyze just one chord in one of their songs, one would have to associate it with a feeling of fervor, especially with the mixes on this single. Remakes of older songs usually never sound as good as the original. I wouldn't go as far as to say this can't be said with these two...but let's just say this: if there will ever be consideration for an electronic, futuristic musical to West Side Story, I hope these men are still around.
Amazing.......1999-12-05
This single EP is incredible. It cheers me up and relaxes me. I have been playing this record constantly since I have been studying for exams and I just love the song Somewhere. Any Pet Shop Boys fan will love all the songs on this CD.

worth every penny.......2003-01-29
I have looked for this single for years.I found it a couple of months ago and I must say worth every penny that I spent on it.The best versions are the moscow mix,PSB mixMotiv 8mix and of course the song The boy who couldnt keep his clothes on.If you love the Pet Shop Boys you will love this Cd.I give it five Big Gold stars!
Definitively worth a buy.......2001-11-10
I agree with the former critic saying that "Delusions of Grandeur" is maybe or probably the best song on this maxi. It is, and this song alone contains more talent and quality than most ALBUMS of other artists, whose artistically irrelevant songs are played on the radio all day. Besides that, "The boy who couldn't keep his clothes" on and the remix of "A Red Letter Day" are also superb, which for me makes this maxi a must buy!

Go West part 3 ? No way.........1998-06-16
Neil Tennant recorded the choir vocals for this tracks in Moscow, however, don't expect another Go West. A catchy superb song is accompanied by very dancy track The Boy Who Couldn't Keep His Clothes On and Delusions Of Grandeur - maybe the best track of all. Pet Shop Boys can dare to put song like that on a b-side.. like they did with Shameless or In the Night. The Moscow mix of the title track starts with thunder ("Calm before the storm", I'd say) and just when you may expect an end of a pretty slow mix the upbeating rhytm wakes you up from dreaming. A worth having record.

Album Description

Album Details
2007 Reissue by the New York Electric Folk/Rock Singer-songwriter that Originally Appeared in 1976. Although Virtually Nothing is Known About Lucas, this is an Extremely Fine Album from the New Fate Label that in all Probability the Artist Funded and Distributed Himself. The Sound is Awesome, the Songwriting Tight and Occasionally Politically Motivated (Particularly the Title Track with Its Eye Glancing Towards Woody Guthrie's Tribute to Sacco and Vanzetti) and the Music Often Risky and Experimental. Lucas's Vocal Style is Almost Pure Neil Young (Though "Broken Wheel" Belies his New York Roots, Sounding Similar to Lou Reed) and at Times this Set Almost Feels Like Album Young Never Got around to Recording. While Other Influences Abound, it is the Consistently-high Standard Throughout that Leaves the Listener Gasping in Disbelief that Any Record this Good Has Only Been Heard by the 500 People (And Possibly Some of their Friends) who were Able to Buy it Way Back When.

Album Description
Feel-good melodies with tasteful insrumentation and memorable songwriting make this CD one of RLD's best. Every song a favorite! Suzanna Mallow and Andrea Jones produced this CD with John Alagia(who has produced the Dave Matthews Band) and Doug Derryberry (of The Emptys fame). The CD also features appearances from Jon Carroll(currently with Mary Chapin Carpenter)and Timm Biery(currently with Nils Lofgren). "A winner!" -Kenneth Johnson (The Charlotte Observer)
Customer Reviews:
Great nostalgia from the Eastern Shore.......2006-03-04
I saw these ladies perform live at the Milton Hot Air Balloon festival in Delaware a number of years ago. They did a fantastic job, and intrigued us to go speak with them. Sort of on a whim, we purchased the album, and had them sign it for us. Over the next few weeks, we really began to appreciate the music, style and vocals from these two. The song Chesapeake really brings the visuals home for anyone who has ever been there. I lost the CD somewhere along the way, and have since been looking to repurchase it. After an extensive search, spanning a few years, I stumbled across a link, and found it for sale. This led me to believe it would be for sale on Amazon.
The cover song 4 Bowls of Colour is one of their finest on the album, and has a very "sticky" quality to it - I always find myself singing it. Great sort of mellow, up tempo genre. Calming yet provocative images and lyrics. Good harmonies, and nice musical accompaniment.
4 bowls of color and Beefcandy.......2004-05-06
