Customer Reviews:
Avant-Garde ROCK!.......2007-04-14
This album is the good starting point for those who consider Rock as just Led Zeppelin and Jim Morrison. True, they were the giants of hard ROCK. Yet leaders like David Bowie and at first U2 (the letter 2 and the numeral U-Casey Kasum:) steered rock into the field of Alternative Avant-Garde. A new and refreshing attack on the 4/4 beat!
Here are sterling examples of the Alternative sound. They were made when Avant-Garde was just a fringe. They were made generally before the bands became "big" and "sold out." They are my favorite genre of rock.
40 Minutes, non-stop.......2006-03-24
That's exactly what I did on the second hour of my radio show. I featured almost all the songs on this collection, special mixes that I never knew existed, or were out of print long since 12" club mixes were mothballed. Incredible! I had the studio monitor cranked all the way up as I played these great remixes to grateful listeners, turning back the clock to the glorious 80's, if just for a little while. It's a treasure chest, a purchase you will never regret. Anyone who has lived the eighties alternative scene will be awestruck. Where else could you find Icicle Works "Whisper to a Scream" on ANY compilation, anywhere? Forget the so called "edited" versions of these great songs that radio station have played ad-nausium. Buy it.
RARE HARD TO FIND REMIXES.......2005-11-17
This CD set is a great buy for all the terrific songs that are on it. So many memories are stirred up listening to the tracks. If you are into hard to find remixes and no longer have vinyl capabilities you cannot go wrong with this set!
DO NOT let this compilation pass you by!!!.......2005-08-07
While the first 3 volumes were all single discs, this boxed set, for only 15 bux, is like getting volumes 4, 5 AND 6!!! So many 80s 12" mixes on CD at last!!!! Only real downside is one of those horrible re-recorded remixes of Modern English "I Melt With You" from 1990. Track times:

pretty good mixes if you're into the groups on the cd's. some of the songs i like a lot, and some of them aren't that great. but it's definately worth checking out if you're into old synthpop/80's electro-pop, or want to brush up on the roots of the dancier goth/ebm/futurepop groups of today.

Amazon.com essential recording
Disney's Snow White, the world's first animated musical feature (1937), is still a standard in the industry. Though 1930s recording technology was primitive by today's standards, the Disney music studios have always used the available technology to its fullest, and this recording still stands up. The mature but hauntingly childlike Adriana Caselotti as Snow White is a unique vocal presence, and the songs include "Whistle While You Work," "Heigh-Ho," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come." The score is nearly as great an accomplishment as the film itself. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
The Churchill's are very talented persons........2007-02-13
When I was 6, I already had a very good sense of what is a fine music score. I'm 73 now and still loving that music.
One Song.......2006-02-19
I bought this album almost especially for the piece of music entitled "Special Sort Of Death." It does sound creepy but that's what I loved about it. From I saw the film I was like I have to have that.
Anyway another reason for me purchasing this album was the main titles for the film I love the ochestration. My favourite song on this album would have to be One Song followed by with A Smile and a Song.
And number 5 (a piece of music) I can't remember what it's called but it is creepy too the part that has snow white running through the woods.
Someday my prince will come is nice too. Adriana's voice is a little high and annoying sometimes though. But it's still nice to listen to. I listen to this album alot it's very nice and I like to listen to the version of One Song that is played at the end of the movie.
good soundtrack for halloween.......2005-07-14
first of all, i have seen the movie and the hag scares me very much. about the music,it's not good music for children because the orchestral moving creates dark suites. the other part of makin' pies is no exception. i listened to special sort of death on a site called mp3.com and the beginning is very disturbing almost, because it's when the queen appears as the old witch and she plots to destroy snow white
Queen:(laughing)it's not for you, it's for snow white
anyways, bye-bye
REMasterpiece!.......2003-01-21
This soundtrack is a perfect compliment to the film, and It's gloriously remastered to make you feel you are still watching and not just listening to the music from the movie itself.
In the liner notes I read the original soundtrack only consisted of five songs, the five songs we hear sung in the film. "One song/I'm Wishing", "Hi Ho", "The Yodeling Song", "Some day my prince will come", and "Whistle while you work". Over the years, the instrumental musical score was thrown in to create a wonderful masterpiece of a soundtrack.
I highly recommend purchasing this. If you like the music from the movie, you will love this. After hearing this for the first time(I've now heard it at least 100, thanks to my 2 yr. old), the movie is brought out to be more of a musical adventure as well as a wonderful story to be told.
This is my son's favorite c.d., and he has so much fun dancing and singing along.
A Magical, Delightful Soundtrack.......2002-10-07
This was the first of the newly remastered and expanded "Disney classic soundtracks" that I purchased for my collection, and it's still my favorite. How wonderful to have, not only the vocals from the old vinyl version ("I'm Wishing/One Song," "With a Smile and a Song," "Heigh-Ho," "Bluddle-Uddle-Um-Dum," "The Dwarfs' Yodel Song" (and if you don't want to get up and dance to it, there's something wrong with you!), and "Some Day My Prince Will Come"), but the background instrumentals from the track, never before available to the at-home audience. The "Queen Theme," the chilling "Far Into the Forest," and "I've Been Tricked" particularly bring scenes from the movie springing to mind. There are also two songtracks that were cut from the film print. If you're a Disney-lover, your collection must positively include this CD.

Just The Highlights.......2006-12-01
Since Soul II Soul albums are usually uneven, this compilation is actually the best way to appreciate this ensemble's brief but innovative career. All the classic singles are here including the inspiring "Get A Life", the magnificent remake of the r&b chestnut "Move Me No Mountain", the dreamy "A Dream's A Dream", and of course "Keep On Movin'" and "Back To Life". Would have been nice to include some detailed liner notes about the history of Soul II Soul, but the great music coming from this compilation more than makes up for that minor complaint.

Album Description
Available on CD, cassette and limited edition triple vinyl (via DJ specialty shops) this is a compilation of nine tracks remixed (between 1979 and 1982) by Larry Levan, the DJ behind New York's famously influential nightclub, The Paradise Garage. Levan is a producer and remixer who, though he died in 1992, continues to be cited as one of the industry's greatest and most revered. Each of the nine individual full-length tracks was DIGITALLY REMASTERED specifically for this project. The sound quality is brilliant! A supporting series of classic West End Records 12" vinyl singles are being released to compliment this album in the signature West End Records hot pink New York City skyline jackets. The compilation comes complete with comprehensive liner notes giving the label's history, its relationship with Levan and anecdotes about each of the nine remixes and how each came about.

gotta hear it to believe it. gotta believe the liner notes when they jive it's live music. outta this world funk soul party grooves.
We love you Larry (RIP).......2002-03-11
It almost brings a tear even to think of his loss, these sounds here are but a fraction of the love and diversity practiced and preached through his music. I own all these tracks on vinyl, but for any DJ or lover of Garage, this one is essential listening. Don't keep these to yourself, pass 'em along.

Outstanding CD for stride piano lovers.......2007-04-10
The creator of this CD did an excellent job, especially in case of the Art Tatum tracks. As a live playing imitator of Art Tatum cannot cope with his tempo, the special way how this CD has been produced overcomes this problem. Art Tatum sounds perfect as well as the two other stride pianists Fats Waller and James P. Johnson.

This 4-CD set marks the 45th anniversary of Impulse Records and also serves as audio accompaniment to Ashley Kahn's book, The House That Trane Built: The Story of Impulse Records. John Coltrane was the first major artist to sign with ABC-Paramount's fledgling subsidiary in 1961 and it was an inspired choice, his rising prominence and adventurous spirit immediately identifying Impulse with a dynamic shift in jazz. With its gatefold album covers and black and orange graphics, Impulse also added some visual panache to the revolution. While Coltrane--represented here by tracks such as "Greensleeves," "Impressions" and a segment from his signature A Love Supreme--was clearly the label's inspiration, Bob Thiele was one of the great jazz record producers, bent on documenting the best veteran musicians as well as the avant-garde. You hear it in superb tracks here from Earl Hines, Count Basie and Coleman Hawkins, as well as stellar performances by major figures of modern jazz like Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins and Charles Mingus. There are also plenty of appearances by Coltrane's associates, like McCoy Tyner and Alice Coltrane, as well as the revolutionaries that Coltrane and Thiele nurtured, among them Archie Shepp, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders. It all contributes to a survey of what was most vital in jazz in the 1960s and early '70s that no other single label could manage. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Scottanthony.......2007-02-10
I have been listening/collecting Impulse albums for almost 25 years. It is very nice to see such a collection that was clearly put together with quite a bit of care and interest. Sounds wonderful and the song selection is superb. My only minor quibble is that it would have been nice to have one more CD devoted to more of the later releases especially with artists from the label that are not represented (i.e. Sam Rivers, Ornette Coleman and a little more from some others (Johnny Hartman, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp). Very nice job - and the Ashley Kahn book makes this a wonderful weekend getaway
A Revelatory Collection - ****1/2.......2006-08-04
Impulse Records rode point in the progressive jazz movement of the 1960's and early 1970's, the end of what is considered jazz's last "Golden Age". In the sixteen years of its existence as a subsidiary of ABC Records, Impulse brought together many jazz legends and young upstarts, from Earl "Fatha" Hines and Count Basie to Pharoah Sanders and Alice Coltrane. And of course there was their standard-bearer, John Coltrane, who enjoyed his last and most creatively productive years there, offering among others, his masterpiece, "A Love Supreme". This four-disc set presents the wealth of artists and styles that worked under the prestigious orange-and-black umbrella of Impulse: names like Gil Evans, Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Freddie Hubbard, Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Archie Shepp, McCoy Tyner, Gato Barbieri, Ahmad Jamal, and many others. It's all in here, the cool, the post-bop, the avant-garde, and the chronological progression is fascinating, as the music moves from a more traditional to a more radical voice, echoing the tumult of the 1960's. (Case in point: the middle section of Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has a Master Plan" - music doesn't get more "out there" than this.) Impulse had the reputation as a haven for the young, black, "angry" tenor sax player, and while several of their artists may have fit that profile, there was really much more variety to the music. Other influences were evident, like Eastern mysticism, (Pharoah Sanders with Leon Thomas, and Alice Coltrane), and the growing cross-pollination of rock and soul/funk (Gabor Szabo, Keith Jarrett) reflecting jazz's next major direction, "fusion". There are some familiar pieces here, especially those from John Coltrane, but much of it is revelatory, especially to the casual jazz fan like me. The packaging for this box set is nothing spectacular (though it is reminiscent of the glossy "gatefold" covers of the original LPs), but that apparently helps keep the price reasonable for a four-disc collection of over four hours of classic jazz. It's a rich and rewarding musical journey.
(Note: If you are curious but don't wish to invest in the whole set, there is also a budget-priced one-disc sampler available. Also released, concurrent with this set, is a series of single-disc compilations of artists such as John Coltrane, Alice Coltrane, Charles Mingus, McCoy Tyner, and others. I've purchased the Keith Jarrett collection and highly recommend it.)
Problems.......2006-08-01
The CD#2 is wrong. There is a manufacturing defect. CD#2 is the same than CD#1. Should be replaced. I live abroad.
How can be solved?
A very nice but limited overview.......2006-06-15
If nothing else, this four cd set gives a nice overview of the Impluse jazz label and shows the impact it had on modern jazz. What's really revealing is the diversity of music that was recorded. It wasn't just screaming atonal tenor saxophones; there was Ben Webster, Count Basie, Earl Hines as well as hard bop illuminaries such as Art Blakey, Roy Haynes and others. In short there was a lot of musical styles to be had, and this might surprise some who always thought of Impulse as just Trane or Pharoah Sanders.
The shortcoming of this set however is the time limitations that four cd's offer. There is no way to get as much music on here as the label truly deserves. So you're stuck with the personal choices of Ashley Kahn who compiled this set and who also wrote the book about the label. Mostly I can't quibble with the choices, but how Sam Rivers fails to show up here is beyond my comprehension. Yet, the thirty three minute "The Creator Has A Master Plan" by Pharoah Sanders IS here as is "Gypsy Queen" by the late great guitarist Gabor Szabo......so all is not lost.
The packaging is nice enough, the mastering is impeccable and the price for such great music is right. I just wish there were a couple of more cd's in this collection. A label such as Impulse deserves the super deluxe treatment.

Well chosen collection, outstanding digital remastering.......2003-09-16
Thoughtful collection of songs, which mostly avoids duplicating tracks from the 1996 retrospective Recurring Dream, The Very Best of Crowded House. Of those 19 selections, only 4 are duplicated here, version to version (the band's most popular tunes "Something So Strong", "Weather With You", "Don't Dream It's Over" and "It's Only Natural" aptly appear on both collections). While Classic Masters features two elusive live tracks, "When You Come" (from Newcastle, Au 3/3/92) and "Sister Madly" (from London, England 11/12/93, edited), the true gold of this release is found is the rich, digital remastering of the band's earlier catalog, particularly the tracks from the first two albums -- Crowded House, Temple of Low Men -- where the improvements are most striking. The depth and full range of frequency finally return to these recordings, a quality sorely missing from many 80s CDs which were poorly mastered to disc in the mid-80s to early '90s. This collection corrects that mistake magnificently. Highlights here include the stirring bass line of "Never Be The Same" (from Temple of Low Men) and the moody Split Enz-inspired instrumentation of "Hole in the River" (from the first album). Sadly, the only pitfall of this collection is technical. Track 10, Distant Sun (remix), has a bad glitch that carelessly causes the line "drawn to the flame" at the end of the second verse to repeat.
A great additon to any Crowded House/Finn Collection!.......2003-08-02
Just bought this last night - what an awesome find! It is worth every single penny alone just to hear a live version of "When You Come"! Neil Finn is THE master of pop music! This album nicely complements ones already existing Crowded House/Neil Finn/Tim Finn collection. "Chocolate Cake" & "Nails in my Feet" are strong fan favorites and are a nice find on a compilation album. I cannot even begin to recommend enough to everyone all Crowded House & Finn endeavors!
(Keep your eyes peeled for the future Finn Brothers album!)
Good collection for the $$.......2003-07-30
Being one of the biggest Crowded House fans ever, I purchased this album from Amazon the day it was released, not even knowing what songs were included on the CD. This is a great collection and reasonably priced. This CD includes of some of CH's best work, even if it is only 12 songs in length. I was pleasantly surprised to see "Fingers of Love" and "Nails in my Feet" were added to this collection. These are 2 of the best CH songs ever, and SHOULD have been included on the Recurring Dream/Best of album but weren't. I'm sure it was difficult to pick only 12 of CH's best songs, since every one of them was a classic in my opinion. The 2 live songs on the album are good quality, but don't do the band justice. I've had the privilege of seeing them play live a few times and they were absolutely amazing. Here is the track listing since it's not on Amazon yet:
1. Something So Strong
2. Weather With You
3. When You Come (live version)
4. Don't Dream it's Over
5. Fingers of Love
6. Nails in my Feet
7. Never be the Same
8. Chocolate Cake
9. It's Only Natural
10. Distant Sun
11. Sister Madly (live version)
12. Hole in the River
If you already have Recurring Dream, I still reccomend this CD, it has a few different songs as well as some fun live jams too!

Must have.......2007-02-02
I could tell you without listening to the Cd that you must have this. Being a DJ in So Cal in the 90's was a fun time with this music. Yes some songs on this CD were not that good but most of them were. These are classic tunes. I did not purchase the CD because I have the records but anybody who was in the house party or club scene in the 90's would have a great time with this CD.
A Must For Deep House Fans!.......2004-06-24
A must simply because the cd is out of print and hard to find. There are songs on here that cannot be purchased or downloaded anywhere. This CD rides on the tail end of classic house such as Inner City,Two In A Room and begins progressive house artists like Liberty City and Bizzare Inc. It brought to the forefront deep house DJ's LIKE DJ Keoki and Doc Martin.
Not all the hits on this cd are good. The ones i did not mention here were too noisy and the dubs are over and over, which is pretty annoying."Drumz" is a great party starter, with it's catchy snare, bongo, and large drum
beats and whistles. It reminds me of the Brazilian drums that begin the Mardi Gras. "Yolanda" is catchy, but not deep house.More like a club hit."Deep Inside" is totally classic deep
house. La India's " Can't get no sleep" is an awesome jam as well.India's high, clear, emotional, voice really soars with power on this one. This cut is rare."Conquistadores Chocolate" is another rare hit, strong and powerful beats and rythyms, very tribal in compostion, but not deep house."Tree Frog is another classic house dance hit, i would not describe it as deep house. It does not have the dark chords behind it, as this is what really defines deep house.Buy it for these classic tunes, which are RARE.Buy it for the nostalgia, true househeads will remember partying til dawn with these hits.Buy it because i don't believe you can purchase these hits on a compiliation with these hits all on one cd.The reason i didn't give it 5 stars was because so many of the other songs were bad.Best Deep House song on here:"Deep Inside".
Rare Music.......2000-02-07
This CD contains music that is really hard to find these days. Pick this up now because I believe they're not making this CD anymore. If you want to hear a sample of what was heard in the club scene in th mid 90's this is it. If you live in California, this CD contains music that was played at Caddies,Fantasia,QC's,and Peppers. Everybody that has heard this CD says it really brings back memories. I personally like only seven songs but this CD is worth more to me than what I paid for.

Released for the first time on CD, this recording chronicles Duke Ellington's historic 70th-birthday tribute, held at the White House on April 29, 1969. Willis Conover of the Voice of America organized the event at which President Richard Nixon awarded Ellington with the Medal of Freedom. But the main course of the evening was the music of the Duke. With Ellington at the keyboard, the evening featured a who's who of the best of jazz: pianists Billy Taylor, Hank Jones, and Dave Brubeck; alto and baritone saxophonists Paul Desmond and Gerry Mulligan; trumpeters Clark Terry and Dizzy Gillespie; and vocalist Joe Williams. They pay homage to Ellington through a series of medleys that include "Take the A Train," "Satin Doll," and "In a Sentimental Mood." Duke Ellington concludes the star-studded celebration with a moving and impressionistic piece dedicated to Mr. Nixon's wife, entitled "Pat." It ends a beautiful evening where art and politics come together. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Duke and Dick.......2002-09-15
As a collector of most things Ellingtonian, I had to have this album after hearing an NPR piece about the circumstances of the recording and its delayed release. It's pleasant enough, but not a CD that's apt to get much playing. The instrumentation is somewhat curious--6 horns plus rhythm section, and no tenor saxophone! Bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Louis Belson are the main constants, with the piano chair being rotated among no fewer than 5 pianists (but not Marian McPartland or Willie the Lion Smith, both of whom were in the audience, as were Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Goodman, and Billy Eckstein).
The proceedings, for the most part, have the feel of a jam session, with the instrumentalists taking turns playing songs from the Ellington universe in a number of medleys. At times the transitions are a bit rough, as the rhythm section has to work to find not just the right key but tempo as well. The only number that evidences any rehearsal is Gerry Mulligan's unusual, up-tempo arrangement of the complex harmonies of "Prelude to a Kiss."
Some highlights and low-lights. Paul Desmond is as close to perfection as you can get--maintaining his musical composure even when the Hank Jones/Milt Hinton accompaniment can't find the chords to the bridge of "Chelsea Bridge." Each of his solo turns is an inventive gem, and at one point he surprises with an unexpected Johnny Hodges imitation. The same could be said of trombonist J.J. Johnson, whose every note brings life to the occasion, whether he's soloing or providing fills. And of course, Clark Terry is his exhuberant, colorful self, making his horn provide the personable vocal effects that are the essence of the Ellington style.
The set by pianist Billy Taylor represents the best piano playing of the evening (what an underrated giant he is--let's hope some of his out-of-print trio recordings are soon made available). Dave Brubeck has only one opportunity, and appears to be cut off at mid-solo by Mulligan's baritone. Fatha Hines 2-minute solo is a virtuosic dazzler, but too short to produce the electrifying effect on record that it apparently had the night of the concert.
Not all of the material is top-shelf Ellington, as the music from the "Second Sacred Concert" and the 4 songs featuring vocalist Mary Mayo definitely represent a musical let-down (while setting up Joe Williams to even greater dramatic effect).
There are absolutely no announcements on the record. Understandably the producers were more interested in capturing the 75 minutes of music, but the presentation by Nixon, the announcements by Willis Connover, and the verbal remarks by Ellington himself would have added a far greater sense of the moment.
As for guitarist Jim Hall, who refused to sign the release required to make the recording available, one wonders if his reasons were not merely political but musical, given the negligible amount of solo space he was afforded that evening. Thank goodness he finally came around or, like Nixon and Rosemary Woods, he would be remembered primarily as the man who lost some potentially valuable tapes.
Buy it. Listen. Learn........2002-09-10
This concert isn't all-star, it's all-legend, and the band is unbelievably hot. Listen to saxophonists Mulligan and Desmond go after each other, or trumpets Berry and Terry on "Just Squeeze Me". The pianists are a wonder, from Hank Jones' fine work through Brubeck's star turn and Billy Taylor in marvelous form on a medley. Then "Fatha" Hines sits down and blows them all away with "Perdido". Great stuff. Great, great stuff.
Singers Mayo and (especially) Williams end the evening with some touching vocal work. Everyone on this disc, and just check out that lineup again, is at the top of his (or her) game, in some of the greatest American music ever written.
So why was this concert not released domestically until now? Seems guitarist Jim Hall had a thing about Nixon (it was 1969, after all) and wouldn't sign the release until recently. Go figure.
Ah, but if only the tapes could have recorded the jam session following the concert, which went on until 3 am. Marion McPartland, Willie the Lion and a host of jazz greats were in the audience and each took a turn, or played duets with the Duke. Even the Marine Band joined in. Too bad it wasn't recorded.
But hold on, this was the NIXON White House. You don't suppose . . . .
ONCE IN THE LIFETIME.......2002-09-06
Only once in the lifetime one can experience magic of Duke Ellington. I was maybe 16 or 17 years old when fortune supplied me with a chance to see Duke in concert. I am 51 now but I still can see and hear it. I guess I was fortunate.
