Customer Reviews:
Powerful work from a prog rock genius!.......2006-08-27
Kerry Livgren, the lead guitarist/keyboardist and chief songwriter for progressive rock icons Kansas, released yet another masterful solo work in 1994, entitled, WHEN THINGS GET ELECTRIC (though, I am not sure if I should call it a true solo work, given the stellar support from Corps de Pneuma).
Filled with his own unique fusion of highly melodic tunesmithing, combined with complex and daring playing and arranging, and powerfully meaningful and affecting lyrics, this album ranks with Kerry's best work. In particular, I am blown away by "Xylon (The Tree)," which is a thrilling epic, and also the bluesy, crackling title track.
As he has in the past, Kerry employs various vocalists, who have a healthy blend of soulful realism and the ability to soar celestially. Kansas' superb violinist, David Ragsdale, is also a welcome addition here. Overall, the sound is big and booming, accented by many passages of lovely delicacy.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED FOR: Fans of Kansas, Kerry Livgren, A.D., Dixie Dregs, Dream Theater, Neil Morse, Transatlantic, Spock's Beard, Styx, Genesis, Queen, Jabberwockie
A Great CD!.......2004-10-03
This is agreat CD made by a great musician/song writer. The more I hear it, the more I like it. Intelligent rock music is a rare and precious thing.
Powerful, emotional, and anything but boring.......2003-11-21
Kerry Livgren has to be one of the most talented musicians to come along since Mozart. Each song has its own personality. His music never fails to move me. This album is no exception. His songwriting talents and great skill in finding just the right notes to play on his guitar are brought to life in every song on the disc. Although the whole disc is great, three tracks definitly stand out: "When Things Get Electric", "This Dark World", and "Xylon (The Tree)". These three songs are among Kerry's best to date. If you find these songs "boring", then you'd better check your pulse to make sure you are still among the living. If you were ever a Kansas or Livgren fan and don't own this CD, you owe it to yourself to add it to your collection.
Super Talented..........2000-06-29
This CD might take a few listens to really appreciate. The more you listen, the more you will be blown away. Kerry is one of the best composer/writers' in the music world. His music is very powerful and diverse. This disc features two great vocalists, a superb violinist(David Ragsdale), and some awesome guitar work from Kerry. As always the lyrics are fresh and meaningful.I agree this disc is nothing like "Seeds of Change", but change is good!
BORING!!!.......1999-07-04
Don't get me wrong, Kerry's a GREAT songwriter and musician, but this album does nothing. "Seeds Of Change" is great, and so is "One Of Several Possible Musiks", but this is no good. Every now and then, you hear some interesting riffs. I you're a Livgren collector, be my guest. If you're exploring, try the two that I mentioned.

With a blend of New Age sensibility and performances from world-class international artists, Windham Hill's second Solstice collection is perfectly suited to the time of year for which it's named. There's substantial variety on this disc, from the ethereal guitar and flute of Angels of Venice's "After the Harvest", to the choral piece "Silgugu Isiphambano" from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to the up-tempo, jazzy "Tres Curmins" from Lani Hall, to the upbeat "Alegre Vida" from Yomo Toro. There's a fine contribution from Buckwheat Zydeco that evokes a carnival atmosphere, and "Lei 'Awapuhi" from Ledward Kaapana, who infuses the piece with bluesy touches of slide guitar and bent notes. This is music to open your windows and air out your house to. -- Genevieve Williams
Customer Reviews:
A spicy mix of styles and flavors.......2007-06-02
This CD does feel abit disjointed at times - not all the music featured is the "same", and yet it all somehow links back to the theme of lazy hot days, and the celebration of summer. It makes me think of the samplers that Windham hill has put out to showcase their various artists. The tracks run the gamut from smooth jazz, to new age, to world beat, to cajun jam session, but it all expresses a feeling of jubilation, and while I don't love EVERY song, I love enough of them to love the CD.
not what i expected, but good.......2001-10-02
My first exposure to Windham Hill was from Winter Solstices 1 and 2. Naturally, I expected the Summer Solstice series to be in a similar style. I bought Summer Solstice 1, and I was not disappointed at all. The music was just what I was looking for. When Summer Solstice 2 arrived in the mail, I was excited to hear more of the same style. I was NOT expecting world music (as another reviewer said) with nice vocals in various languages. That said, I was severely disappointed with my purchase. Just know what you're getting into when you buy this album.
the best world music CD I have purchased in years.......1998-08-24
This album takes me away from my daily life. I feel like I'm on a vacation when listening to music as diverse as Africa, New Orleans and Hawaiia. I definitely recommend it!

Love It.......2004-03-30
I love this CD!!! One of my all time favorites.
Latin Flavored Disco Classics.......2002-10-26
I picked this up on vinyl when I saw the hard to find cuts "Electric Salsa" and "Don Quichotte" were on here. The other reviewers are correct - if you're looking for real Salsa this isn't it. However if you're an "old head" who remembers these cuts from the disco days, it's a great find. I'm glad to see it's on CD.
is this salsa!.......2000-07-03
Of course not... If you are looking for real salsa, look for something else, with a real beat, salsa instruments, trumpets, drums, and in Spanish
That's really terryble salsa! Dont by that one!.......1999-06-12
It does not work with dancing. To much elecktrick, not salsa dance-able

Smooth and classy as can be........2005-10-26
Ray Barretto's entry into the Latin Jazz market resulted in this classy and sophisticated album which sadly remains one of his most underexposed Fania titles. His superb rendition of Thelonious Monk's classic "Round About Midnight" is given a bolero undertone and its arrangement is nothing short of brilliant. This is music that will nourish your heart, soul and spirit.
One of Barretto's finest work.......2001-08-25
This is Ray Barretto's(congas and percussion) already a band leader on his own merits and a frequent sideman for George Benson, Airto, Freddy Hubart and many of the "starts" from the legendaries CTI recordings (Hubert Laws, Bob James) first "latin jazz" recording under his name. After many years without listening to this album it still sound like something recorded yesterday. The Other Road is a very good example of what Latin jazz is all about, recorded in New York around 1972. The work of Billy Cobham (drums), Art Webb (flute) and Roberto Rodriguez(trumpet) in this album is great. Barretto's version of Monk's jazz classic 'Round about Midnight' is explendit, Other musicians in this session were Eddie Martinez( piano/rodhes) Manny Duran(Flugel/Trumpet), J Roman(trumpet),Ray Romero(timbales),Tony Fuentes(bongos and cowbell), G. Edghill (Fender bass). After this recording Ray Barretto's Road was different and took the "afinque and tumbao" to another level. For latin jazz and jazz afficionados this album is a most have.
Foreshadowing.......2001-04-15
A 70's latin jazz (as opposed to salsa) recording that showed what Ray Barretto would be doing twenty years later. Impressive.
