4 out of 5 stars The Golden Age of Dance (Pop) Trance.......2005-11-11

Disc one has all the favorites. Classic Ministry of Sound when it actually was cool. Last good disc before the demise of MOS.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, but not perfect.......2004-03-03

Well to start off, this is the first Trance Nation CD I bought. Well I listen to the sounds of the music, the beat gets to my head. It will make you feel like dancing, the techno beats and rythems are very heart-throbbing. First to couple of songs are amazing, the beat gets into you, and quickly. The rest are pretty much the same, of course there are ups and downs as the songs go by.

Long story short, This is a must pair of CD's. I give this, Trance Nation 4, a 4.5/5. I just can't put the stars 4.5.

5 out of 5 stars fast paced.......2004-02-03

I have to give it a 5 for a pretty good track selection. This is my first of trance nation, I was disapointed with all the TNAs, but this is pretty good. Once comment that's neither for or against it, is that this CD moves really fast. on cd1 only one track is longer than 4:30, and most clock in under 4:00. Like I said, I'm not sure if its bad or good, but it is a lot better than the tracks being drawn out.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite CD's.......2003-02-07

These 2CD's were amazing!!!. The first CD was good. The first four songs were strong followed by the others. You just can't listen to it and not want to dance with the techno beats.

The second CD was even better. I loved the songs by System F lost in motion and the end almost made me cry!!! It changes your mood for the day and encourges you in life. If I didn't have this CD, I might have failed school.

I had a long history with Trance Nation. Anyways, to make a long story short, buy these Cd's and you won't be dissapointed

5 out of 5 stars Ferry Corsten -- can you get any better than this?.......2002-08-13

Trance Nation 4 does not dissapoint MOS and System F fans. Corsten delivers another phenominal mix of some of the best trance music from 2000.

Some of the highlights from this 2 disc set (which comes strong on BOTH CD's, unlike Trance Nation 5) :

Sandstorm makes an appearance here, and it should be since it is one of the top dance hits of the year... Also "Revelation" comes in (a great remix here) at track 9. The first CD is solid, you'll hear some familiar songs here and also some lesser known ones.

The second CD follows up strong, there are some very original remixes along with Corsten's normally seemless beatmatching... the second CD also includes a great remix of the theme from the movie "Platoon" (which almost brought a tear to my eye! ) -- there's actually some points in this set where I can barely notice the tracks changing over...

All in all, a great release from MOS -- Get it if you love trance or are a fan of Ferry Corsten.

3 out of 5 stars Well..........2004-03-05

Really both of the CDs were okay, but the second one was MUCH better. The first CD had a lot of vocals, too much for me, and I wasn't really fond of the non-trance songs turned into trance songs. But CD 1 had its good songs too, I liked Heaven Sent, If You Want Me, and Electro Buzz, and a some others.

The second CD was very good and next to all of the tracks on it were good. Some of the tracks I thpought were really good would have to be Solstice and Ligaya.

5 out of 5 stars This Is One Of The Most Upfront Trance Album Produced.......2003-06-03

This Is One Of The Most Upfront Trance Album Produced by Ministry of Sound. The ixing is superb, and the selection of tracks are ideal to create a perfectly euphoric state of mind. With tracks by Matt Darey, Jan Wayne, Ferry Corsten, Tillman Uhrmacher, and beautiful remixes by Hemstock and Jennings,Silverblue, and Divine Inspiration, You're sure not to miss out on this ingenious album. Some anthems to watch out for include Ferry's 'Solstice' with a very beautiful and melancholic crescendo, The Armin van Buuren Remix of 'Sky Falls Down' and the Divine Inspiration remix of 'Show Me Heaven'. These songs represent trance in all manners, and I am sure you'll love all the other tracks as well.I absolutely recommend this album to all die-hard and experimenta trance fans, but I recommend Trance Nation deeper for the harder clubbing generation, who enjoy the more progressive and deeper genre of trance and hard trance. PLUR!!!

5 out of 5 stars 6 stars if i could!.......2006-01-29

This CD is just as good as it's first, Trance Nation vol.1
I'm not sure why it has four stars in the total rating, but it deserves much more than that. The first song is my favorite and it's an opening song...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Trance Compilation.......2005-11-22

In my opinion, this is the best compilation Ministry ever put out. They should have had Ferry Corsten oversee all of them. This album is still great and I've had it for several years. Trance music was at it's peak at that time so if you're new to it-this is what you missed, although you'll still hear some of these songs played in clubs because they're so great.
If you're reading the reviews and wondering "should I get it?" the answer is a resounding yes.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is Special to me because I got it by luck!.......2003-11-05

I am so proud of my discovery of Trance Nation. This is how I discovered it. In 2000 June, I borrowed a random CD called Dance Nation at the library. Sadly I had to return it so I wanted to download it. On Napster Music Commnity, I typed Dance Nation on the search and it gave me Trance Nation 3 CD1. It was 109 MB and 75 mins long. woooow I thought, a song this long! So I just randomly downloaded to see how it was like it and didn't even know what that was. Then I heard the song don't give up and I was like, WOW! this song is great! and now I am still listening to this stuff because it is just excellent! I love Trance with all my heart! So you should get this too along with the other CDs From 1-4 and 2001 (would not recomend 2002 and definitely not 2003!) and you find it amazing too!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Club Trance albums out there.......2001-08-15

So far, this is my favorite entry into the Trance Nation series by Ferry Corsten. This one is filled, back to back, with probably the most great songs I've ever heard on one compilation. I could star naming songs, but I'd just end up putting down most of the album.

Disk1 is my favorite. This is the more vocal of the two, and I generally prefer the vocals (although I know that most hardcore progressive trance fans hate vocal trance). Also Disk1 has a clubbier trance feel, while Disk2 strays more towards a darker progressive beat-driven trance. Although I love Disk1 there is still plenty to like about Disk2. All the songs have great buildups, and Ferry has a knack at picking out great track selections.

One thing that people tend to hate about Corsten is that he has so many tracks on one disk: 20 alone on Disk1. I don't have that prejudice. Although I love to see a DJ take a great song and stretch it out over 8-10 minutes, I also hate it when a DJ lays down lots of filler beats in between tracks. Corsten does no such thing. Song transitions are quick but precise. He's obviously taken a lot of time to plan out the order that the tracks are going to be played in, and each song blends into the next with a natural progression. Each song is around 4-5 minutes long, and that is more than enough time for that song to leave its mark and not over stay its welcome.

All I have left to say is that I love this album. Both disks are excellent and high energy. I predict this collection won't fad away, and will stay right next to my CD player for a long time to come. If you love trance, then this album come highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars awesome.......2001-06-18

this album is one of the best trance cd's i have. The whole first CD and the second half of the second are amazing. The good thing about this album is that you get to like new songs as you listen to this cd so you never get tired of it. Gouryella's walhalla, web's loving times ukw hymnotic are great songs. But so are toca me (instrumental)which i like much more than the original, chicane's don't give up, and almost everyother song on the first cd. So, buy this Cd and u won't be disappointed...

Amazon.com

The first U.S. release from the influential U.K. label/dance-music collective Ministry of Sound, Trance Nation America taps the DJ talents of both U.S. coasts in the form of L.A.'s Taylor and New York's Jimmy Van M, two immensely popular mixologists who make good use of this high-profile, double-CD gig. The first disc is Taylor's show, and he wastes no time showing off the anthemic, Christopher Lawrence-esque trance that West Coast DJ's have come to specialize in. Taylor's particular bent is more elegant than most, though, successfully evoking a gentle vibe early in the set with Rabbit in the Moon's floating remix of Garbage's "Milk," and a patient, teasing version of BT's "Dreaming." He definitely does indulge his more primal rhythmic inclinations elsewhere, throwing down the gauntlet with an expertly transitioned Hyperion remix of Inkfish's "Body and Mind," and later, an incredible rendering of his own cranked-up, dance-floor thrill-ride, "Xenophobe." Jimmy Van M's mix on the second disc hovers even more delicately above the turntables, though with a darker, more minor-key vibe that illuminates the stylistic differences that arise regionally in U.S. electronic music. An overt sense of melodic repetition drives the first part of JVM's mix, exemplified in Revolt's "Dive into the Deep," and while his mix gets heavier as it goes, he never leaves that sense of delicacy completely behind. Both mixes display a mystifying ability to explore a huge amount of electronic territory, moving easily between differing rhythms and smoothing over distracting edges. In fact, Ministry of Sound, Taylor, and Jimmy Van M all succeed not only in showing trance's elastic, diverse nature, they also somehow convey the idea that while the U.S. continues to be fertile ground for DJ talent, its regional musical dialects are all still basically derived from the same beat-driven language. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wickedly Good.......2006-06-01

Let me start off by saying that I'm terrible at writing reviews...Now to the task at hand. This is one of those releases that has never gotten old to me. JVM's disc is honestly one of the best progressive releases that you'll likely hear. The first five tracks might just be the best sequence of driving prog/trance ever(IMO) The ironic thing is that it really doesn't fit the style you'd expect with a title like Trance Nation America. It's more in line with what you'd expect from the Global Underground, Bedrock, and Balance series. So I guess what I'm trying to say is: Buy it, you won't be dissapointed, especially since you can get it used for so cheap.

5 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2006-04-15

Trance Nation America, disc 2 mixed by Jimmy Van M, has excellent track selection and flawless blending making this one of the 3 all time best trance CD's ever. the other 2 are Paul Oakenfold's Global Underground 007 disc 1, and Trance II (trans) disc 1, mixed by Noel W. Sanger

3 out of 5 stars 3 stars please!!!!!!!!.......2006-01-29

I hated it at first because it wasn't fast like ferry corsten's version. But after listening to it over again, I got used to it. Pretty good...but not worth over at least $15 bucks.
Buy it used...

5 out of 5 stars Brilliance well before it's time.......2004-08-24

I've been listening to progressive house ever since its beginnings and having been bored by alot of the productions coming out now I have started going back through my old collection of compilations.

Trance Nation America is almost 5 years old but listening to it again I've realized that I simply lacked the maturity to appreciate this classic. I think I listened to this disk twice and threw it to the bottom of the stack. Jimmy Van M's set here is an underrated progressive house gem and it's a damn shame more people haven't heard this. I would say this record is just as important as Digweed's Global Underground in LA in terms of showcasing the movement towards a darker progressive house/breaks sound. Jimmy Van M is known far more for his productions (Love like sleep, Sanctuary being crowd favorites), and has never been seen as an outstanding DJ. He had since gained some acclaim after being featured on the second Bedrock compilation.

But it's nice to hear where the roots of the progressive sound lie, and why Jimmy Van M was the regular opener for Sasha and Digweed during the Twilo years.

Taylor gives us a very good period piece with huge trance classics but mixes in a few tracks to give the set a slightly tempered quality and not so much hands-in-the-air fluff. Taylor has since played darker and more techy as of late and you can hear his evolution in "Synaesthesia".

4 out of 5 stars Not your typical Trance Nation CD!.......2004-06-10

This is not your typical Trance Nation CD! Normally I can't stand any release from Ministry of Sound, DJ Tiesto, Armin Van Buuren, Ferry Corsten, etc. It's not my style of electronic music. I like something more subdued, more clever, something a little off kilter, like for example, your typical John Digweed, or Dave Seaman release. I don't enjoy trance music where they beat you over the head with the beat, and try to allure you with an obvious synth line that doesn't attract your attention but instead strangles you for it. This is not what you will find here.

That said, fans of progressive house will find plenty to enjoy here. Taylor takes the middle of the road with his mix, dropping plenty of big name anthems, but when all is said and done he leaves a little to be desired. His mixing is excellent, but his track selection is a little too obvious. BT's "Dreaming", Taylor's own "Anomaly", and Pink Bomb's "Indica" have all been overplayed. These are not bad tracks by any means, but they've certainly lost their edge due to over exposure. Since these are the highlights of the set, the rest of the tracks seem mediocre by comparison. Overall, good but unremarkable. Three stars.

Jimmy Van M's set however, is beyond good. I find comparing albums is the best way to convey the sound of an album through words. In this case, Sasha & Digweed's Northern Exposure: Expeditions to me, is the closest sounding album I've heard (which for those who've heard, know that this is among the greatest progressive CD's yet to be released). Starting off with Cass & Slide's absolutely chilling "Opera", you know your already in for a hell of a ride with this mix. In fact, the opener is so good, the rest of album has a hard time reaching this same pinnacle. The rest of the set bumps and burns with trickles of melody at just the right moments to keep your interest. "Klein Aber Doctor" by Almos is the perfect example of this suspense and release style. Other highlights include Revolt's "Dive Into The Deep", Science Dept's "Repercussion" (as heard on John Digweed's "Hong Kong" mix), and Timo Maas' remix of Kee Mo's "Madness". By the time we reach the album's conclusion in LSG's "Hidden Sun Of Venus", we are less content with pumping our fists and jumping in the air than we are just lying staring at the ceiling heart filled with emotion. I cannot recommend this mix anymore for fans of the Sasha, Digweed, or Dave Seaman style of progressive. Simply amazing. Five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Okay I guess?.......2006-01-28

I liked it. But...on disc two DJ Scot Project-FM. Song was way too short. Need longer songs in time to get into.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent piece of art.......2005-01-17

While I have been known to give Judge Jules mixed reviews, this is quite possibly his best and finest work. The track selection is solid. There is a certain thematic consistency here that definitely lives up to the title "Trance Nation Electric". While some of the tunes are familiar, most of the mixes are novel. All are electrifying, and, belive it or not, both discs are good. Also, Jules' style as a DJ complements the theme of the music quite well, something not always true of his compilations.

Given current street prices, if you are an electronic music fan you should definitely consider adding this to your collection. As far as I know, this is a one-of-a-kind compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a real Trance Compilation.......2004-06-10

I have been waiting a long time for a Trance Compilation like this since Gatecrasher has been slow at releasing new Trance Compilations lately.

You will not find any cheesy trance songs in this CD. Judge Jules has outdone himself this time. A Compilation that really makes you feel good inside.

Please if anyone comes across more Compilations like this one at Amazon then please let it be known.

1 out of 5 stars Crap!.......2004-12-29

I saw this CD at a friends house and noticed that it was mixed by Ferry Corsten, so I immediately asked if I could borrow it. It turned out that he had several other Trance Nation CDs mixed by Ferry Corsten. I borrowed them all from him and gave them a listen when I got home. To my surprise, all the CDs sucked enourmously!!! I can't believe Ferry Corsten agreed to mix all this poppy garbage!!! If you want to see what Ferry Corsten is capable of achieving, then get Global Trancemissions 01 & 02, and Right of Way instead than this piece of crap.

4 out of 5 stars Well It's good but..........2003-10-22

This is CD does not really dissapoint me, but all these vocal type songs are starting to get out of hand. I loved "Catch" by Kosheen and "I feel so fine." These songs actually made me move and made me "relaxed", but unfortunalty, they are not Trance. Lets call this alblum Vocal Nation 2002 instead because I also don't see why Ferry has to make a title 6 times. Anyways, it's not that bad because there were still some Trance songs and the Vocals were good. But comparing to Trance Nation 1-5 (Trance Nation 5 is also called Trance Nation 2001) this is bad, I would suggest you buy those and you will be proud you did. So this alblum gets a four star for these excellent songs, but remember, next time, Trance!!!

3 out of 5 stars Ferry please please get away from MOS albums.......2003-06-25

Why oh why does a brilliant master of the trance genre feel he has to keep churning out turgid Ministry of Sound compilations?. These mixes are great for those just getting to grips with the sound but true fans look elsewhere. The MOS comilations seem have that 60s thing about the 3minute sound bite ie the mixes are way too short, the tracks used are usually old and found elsewhere months before release by MOS and lastly there are always too many fillers on anything they release. Ferry has done much much better and will do again, This album gets 3 stars for nothing more than the brilliant Armin Van Buuren mix of the best thing released in 2001- 'Rapture' by Iio.

5 out of 5 stars Ferry is the Master of Anthems........2003-05-25

Many people might not like this album becasue of many songs that are too much like pop or vocal but ferry's track choices and remixes make it sound like you have never heard these songs before.I agree than it's too much like pop and the songs you would hear on the radio like "Will I " but it's still amazing. If you are looking for a trance cd get this it won't dissapoint you.

2 out of 5 stars Trance going downhill?.......2003-02-26

I love Ferrys work...so i do not fault him for this CD. More and more, trance seems to be going vocal, to feed the appetite of those who cannot live without vocals in their songs. Its sad...seeing people depend so much on vocals in a song to make it a song. One of the reasons i got into trance is that there were no vocals...it was different, not distracting, and even at 140-160 BPM, it was relaxing. Now, with all the vocal releases coming into the scene, artists are concentrating less on melodies, and more on just banging out another track. I will not fault Ferry for this...it's just the scene. Look at the old classics we used to have (Binary Finary - 1998, Armin - Communication, System F (ferry) - Out of the Blue..) compared to whats "hot" now (Kosheen - Hide U, Tukan - Light a Rainbow, Gouryella (ferry) - Ligaya...) Its sad.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars TN 5 -- Corsten does it again.......2002-08-13

Trance Nation 5 comes in strong after an impressive showing of Trance Nation 4. MOS and Corsten fans will not be dissapointed with this aggresive mix full of great tracks.

CD 1 is by far, in my opinion, superior than disc 2. It's almost like they piled everything onto disc 1 then put all the "iffy" stuff on disc 2 (which is still great, but compared to disc 1 it's hard to hold up!)

CD 1 has a lot of popular club/dance hits that are remixed by Corsten flawlessly. He continues to be one of the masters of the industry.

CD 2 still has some good tracks (Tiesto's 643, Beautiful Strange) but for the most part it's a bit erratic and just not as smooth and addictive as disc 1.

Overall, a great set, I would buy it just for the first disc. I would give the first one 6 stars if I could, but the 2-disc set is hurt by second one.

Also, if you like this, I would highly recommend Corsten's new Trance Nation 2002 release, it is another great hit by the man.

5 out of 5 stars The is the latest, greatest.......2002-01-20

This CD shows why MoS is still #1 in dance music. It is well mixed by no other then Ferry Corsten, one of the best DJs in the world. The tracks are all very good, probably their best CD since TN1.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is supreme.......2001-10-19

I love TranceNation series. It alwasy has the hottest tracks. This CD is no exception. On the other hand, i also suggest Trance Match series. The latest album has lots similar songs. If I have to choose, I will go with Trance Match.

5 out of 5 stars Corsten has proved himself a leader of Prog. Trance.......2001-07-25

System F (DJ Ferry Corsten) is a person that no one answers to in the trance world. With the release of Trance Nation 3 (which I highly recommend), and Trance Nation 4, which starts out with a slightly less melodic beat (but still very good), and this album as a successor, Corsten has proved to be truly great. This album once again shows his talent in even more ways, adding everything from pounding bass and beat in DJ Tiesto's 'Flight 643' to more melodic vocal songs such as Tenth Planet's 'Ghosts'. When it comes to this DJ, it's all good. Like other Dutch artists such as DJ Tiesto and Armin Van Buuren, Corsten is able to seemlessly blend hard trance with and a euphoric, pulsing melody and vocals. It is truly wonderful music for any person interested in fast trance. It is a good CD to start a trance collection. Other trance essentials I recommend are Alice Deejay's 'Who Needs Guitars Anyway' and Darude's 'Before the Storm'. If you like double disc sets, I strongly recommend checking out the Gatecrasher series.

    5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2001-06-26

What a much needed come back from MOS and Ferry Corsten. This release is amazing bringing up some really progressive trance. Forgive me for saying but i think this is better than Trance Nation 1. That annoying original track warrior is even remixed into an amazing track. Corsten plays with you through out this CD. If you like progressive trance this is probably the best one ever. If you have any heart or blood pressure problems consult your physician before listening.........Im not kidding.

1 out of 5 stars Definitely not for those who truly love dance music!.......2003-03-27

I would like to apologize in advance if I sound a bit too upset over a CD. It's just that I have been burned by the music industry one too many times and it has finally gotten me fed up. They know that you can't return a CD and get your money back once you realize that they have sold you something worthless.

This CD is a joke. A lot of the song listings state that the versions included in this 2-CD set are "extended" or "club" versions. Yeah...whatever! If an extended version clocks in at 3:40, then I would hate to hear the edited version. What would it be...two minutes?!!

The kind of people who would spend money on a double disc collection of dance music would strike me as the people who would want to hear the full-length versions that they hear in the clubs. Why should we pay good $$ to hear 4 minute, radio friendly, edited versions of all of these songs. It's such a waste! We can hear this stuff on the radio for free.

Please...don't fall for this scam like I accidentally did. If you love dance music then don't spend your hard earned cash on this awful CD full of pop songs instead of real dance music. I hope I've been able to save you some money and aggravation with this warning.

2 out of 5 stars You've Heard It All Before........2003-02-26

I suppose "Club Nation America Volume 2" will serve its purpose to those who don't listen to radio or are unfamiliar with dance music. But seasoned pros who are familiar with Ministry of Sound's previous compilations will most likely find this one to be a letdown. There are, however, a few highlights. Being such a huge fan of Thunderpuss (Chris Cox and Barry Harris), I love their remix of Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama." And I also dug the dance version of Res' "They Say Vision." But this compilation is overall predictable and recycles the same songs we've all heard before. I like DJ Sammy's trance remake of "Heaven," but, honestly, there are already dozens of compilations that have this song. And did they have to include that horrific remake of "Like a Prayer" by Mad House? It's bad enough to send ME to a madhouse. DJ Al B. Rich seemed to play it safe and made no attempt to give these two mix CDs anything resembling an edge. For those who are new to dance music and MoS, I'd give this a reluctant green light. But more discriminating listeners won't suffer a huge loss by passing on this one.

4 out of 5 stars A wee bit cheesy but overall good mix of house and trance.......2002-10-06

I recently caught a tv advertisement for this 2-cd mix compilation. Judging by the tracklist, the mix cd set looked appealing enough to check out. Considering this is from Ministry of Sound you have to know that this mix set is going to be good. I have yet to be disappointed by a Ministry of Sound mix compilation. They always put out some quality compilations mixed by some of the world's best djs like Johnny Vicious and George Acosta. They don't pick a bunch of no-name djs. They always get the best djs there is on the club circuit.

On the latest volume of Club Nation America, Al B. Rich is the dj who mixes the entire compilation. The remixes on disc one is primarily house remixes. I really dug the remixes of Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama" and Res' "They Say Vision". Those two remixes are the highlights of disc one for me. I'm not into house music as I once was but overall it is a good cd. I would say disc two is the trance disc. I don't know who ever thought it was a good idea to make a Bryan Adams' song into a trance song but that person had to be smoking something other than a cigarette. The song is extremely cheesy. It screams out "velveeta". I like the song but it is just overly cheesy. One of the cheesiest cover songs in the world of trance music. I also thought the dance version of Madonna's "Like A Prayer" had "velveeta" written all over it. Despite the cheese factor of this compilation, it is very good for a Saturday night before hitting the nightclubs. I thought this compilation was a lot better than the Trance Nation mixed compilation which was ok but nothing to write home about. Still you can't do no wrong with anything by Ministry of Sound.

King of all he surveys when it comes to the trance world, Judge Jules has been (and remains) one of the most important figures in modern dance history. It's therefore fitting that he's at the helm for Ministry of Sound's 'Trance Nation Anthems' collection. A triple CD set, the compilation calls in all the biggest trance hits of the past decade alongside a smattering of current club & chart smashes. CD one & two feature a wealth of trance classics whilst the third CD - entitled 'Gone But Not Forgotten' - is named after the popular section from Judge Jules' BBC Radio 1 show in which he revisits dance-floor anthems. 50 tracks packaged in three slimline jewel cases & housed in a slipcase. Ministry of Sound. 2003.

4 out of 5 stars You'll get what you expect..........2005-01-05

Let's start off by saying who this isn't for. It's not for the person who hates electronic dance music, and it's not for the person who's looking for something new. You've heard it all before.

So you've heard it all before. This being a "best-of" sort of deal, that's a good thing. Jules picked a lot of solid tunes for this set. They've either got serious staying power, or they're overrated tunes. (I think there are some underrated cuts here too, so props for that.) It's definitely "best-of".

So let's talk about whether you want a copy of this or not. When I first saw the price of ~$35, I knew I didn't want it. Now that it's $20 on the street, I sprung for a copy. If you buy it, you'll get 50 songs on 3 discs. Seeing as MoS can cram 63 songs into that kind of compilation, I have to say it's very refreshing to have full-length cuts. Yay! And I'd say 40 out of the 50 songs should be in your collection. So that's good too.

Now let's talk about the down side. There are, frankly, a flood of wonderful "best-of" CDs on the market, so you've got lots to choose from. I already owned many of these tunes, from CDs of years gone by. If you've got Ferry Corsten's original "Trance Nation" from MoS, you've got a good start on collecting the trance tunes herein. If you want "Love Shy" by Kristin Blonde, I think that "Club 2K Volume 2" has the ultimate version. So I'm saying that, given current prices, you might collect the older CDs and like them better.

So, given the oodles of compilatons available (both old and new), what do I have against this one to give it only four stars? The answer is Judge Jules. Many people rag on his "brash" style. Now it's my turn! His style is very appropriate for "Trance Nation Harder" and "Trance Nation Electric", both of which are worth your while. However, to me, classic trance is dominated by purity of sound and technical excellence. Jules' style has two flaws here. He'll mix songs that are out of pitch with each other, creating a dissonance I can't stand. He also has no regard for a flowing baseline. What I want to hear in bass is "boom, boom, boom" the whole way through. The way Jules mixes, you get "boom, boom, BOOM!, flup, Floom!, blup, bloom, boom". Only during the transitions, though, of course. Since other compilations mix trance with more technical mastery, I like them better. That may just be my opinion. Form your own!

5 out of 5 stars 5 years in 3 CDs - Epic tyune after epic tyune.......2004-04-30

A friend let me borrow these discs. They are, without a doubt, the best single source the best tunes of the last 4-5 years. You'll recognize so many of these tunes from the great Oakenfold mixes of '99, Van Dyk's essential mixes and Tiesto's studio mixes. These tracks really are "greatest hits" - I think there were only a handful of tunes on the entire set that I didn't recognize, and I'm not some sort of obsessive trance junkie that's been into it for years and years.

Jules mixes nicely and orders the tracks in a fresh, new way that really revives some of these tunes. While spontaneous live mixes will always have that sense of razor's-edge spontaneity, it's great to have all these tunes in one place.

While I'd still advise getting the original mixes on which these tracks appeared, if you're a little burned out on your older Oakey/Dyk/Tiesto/whoever, definitely pick these up. Especially if you can "borrow" them from a friend.

5 out of 5 stars You must buy this!.......2004-04-06

This is definitely the best trance collection I own, and if you don't own it, then that MUST change. Seriously. Buy this or you will live to regret it. Anyway. If you want some quick advice then here are 3 reasons for buying this 3-cd set:

(CD1) System F - Out Of The Blue
(CD2) Kristine Blond - Love Shy
    (CD3) Energy 52 - Café Del Mar

Those are clearly the 3 standout tracks throughout the whole collection, even though there are loads more (Pulp Victim - The World; Matt Darey & Marcella Woods - Liberation / Beautiful; Chicane - Saltwater; Serial Diva - Pearl River; Lustral - Everyime...). The mixing is very good and all the selections except for about one or two (a couple weak spots towards the end of CD1), but other than that, this 3-cd box set is PERFECT! I recommend it for anyone, trance fan or not.
