Once a side project of the woefully underappreciated Okkervil River, Shearwater's Palo Santo staggered enough listeners upon its initial 2006 release that singer and bandleader Jonathan Meiburg re-recorded much of the album for this expanded edition. The band has created a far more vivid, upfront, intense aural experience in the re-make. "Nobody" is still a brittle, eerie whisper (like the title track) with a wafting haze behind the guitar and voice, and "Seventy-Four, Seventy-Five" sports a ringing piano behind Meiburg's voice and a horn chart that recalls Neutral Milk Hotel. The most staggering moments find Meiburg going off the rails, bellowing where he once sang warm, yearning high-arcsparticularly in the album's stark opening moments and during "Hail, Mary," with its rush of electric pianos and hard-vamping thwacks as the singer barks across the top. Now Meiburg and Will Sheff need to balance their time--and their electric pianos, guitars, banjos, glockenspiels, and assorted scrabbling sounds between their magnificent other band, Okkervil River, and this tremendous ensemble. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
Austin's Shearwater debut on Matador with a completely refurbished edition of their critically acclaimed 2006 album. They re-recorded five of the eleven tracks and added new cover art, deluxe packaging in the form of a gatefold digipak inside an O-card, plus a bonus CD containing eight additional tracks, all for the price of one CD. The music is a soaring, vast, multi-instrumental song-cycle. The vocals and songwriting recall bands as diverse as Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry and late Talk Talk, but this is unabashedly rock music, anchored by Thor Harris's mighty Bonhamesque drums. "Almost impossibly majestic and beautiful" - #1 CD of 2006, Stephen Thompson, NPR.
Customer Reviews:
Genius album deserved to be refurbished.......2007-06-11
Palo Santo is a remarkable album- the lyrics are amazing and the orchestrations are genius. I am a huge fan of shearwater and had fallen in love with the demo version of Red Sea, Black Sea on their website--but then I was terribly disappointed in the version on the first release of this album (on jagjaguar). It just didn't have the same power that the demo had- and I felt like it made the banjos sound too muted. This new release (on Matador) recaptures the essence of that song. I could listen to this album 10 times in a row and not get tired of it. They are an amazing band.
Awesome.......2007-05-04
Simply worth $12 just for the new Hail Mary version. ... and I thought the $12 I paid for the prior version was the bargain of 2006.
This is one of those rare albums that you will listen to - all the way through - for years to come. Joins the list of my all time favorites like:
Colour of Sping - Talk Talk
Laughing Stock - Talk Talk
Ghosts of the Great Highway - Sun Kill Moon
Pink Moon - Nick Drake
Winged Life - Shearwater
Thanks Jonathan.
NOT satisfied..........2007-05-04
...sorry folks, but in MY opinion the original recording of the album is by FAR superior to this remake (I do own both versions). This is the clinical though better sounding version with a superfluous bonus disc, while the original is the organical natural thing. The rough edges have been flattened but for no good, thank god no one ever thought of doing such a heretic thing to "in the aeroplane over the sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel.
Just listen to the harsh beauty, the totally dissonant organ of HAIL MARY and compare it to the shallow new version on this disc.
Besides, the original cover artwork totally visualises the cold fragility of palo santo, whereas that cute parrot on the FOC of the new version is nice but represents nothing.
Beautiful Repackaging job....BUT.......2007-05-03
The quality of this edition is the reason to BUY cds these days. The packaging is a total part of the listening experience.
BUT WHERE ARE THE LYRICS?!!
The whole reason to BUY a hard copy of the CD instead of cheapo compressed downloads.
Brilliant reimagining of a classic........2007-04-18
I'll admit, when I heard that Shearwater was planning to not only remaster and rerelease "Palo Santo" as part of their new deal with Matador Records, but also re-record half of the album, I was apprehensive, to put it mildly. The original was an undeniable classic, unlike anything I've heard in a long time..."OK Computer" was probably the last record that affected me in a similar way.
But then I read comments from Jonathan Meiburg (composer and vocalist on all 11 tracks) stating their reasoning for revisiting the album, and it did make sense, given the dissatisfaction the band had with the original recordings, not to mention the apparent serious mastering problems. And now that I hear the new version, I know I'll probably never listen to the original again. The new recordings ("La Dame", "Red Sea", "Seventy Four", "Johnny Viola", and "Hail, Mary") are so much more powerful than their year-old counterparts, and the other 6 tracks take on a whole new dimension now that they've been properly mastered. The instrumentation is so much clearer and more spacious now...the songs breathe in a way they weren't allowed to before. For me, the most dramatic improvement comes in the form of Thor Harris' Bonham-esque drumming...the drum sound is HUGE now.
I loved this record before, but now it's well into my all-time favorites list. Do yourself a favor and pick up this record now!

This CD just keeps on getting better.......2007-06-27
It's often pleasing to pick up a new album by your favorite group and rock out to what feels like a continuation of your favorite tunes by them. But then doesn't it always feel like a short time later the new album is played out? And it ensues naturally that you'd like the group to come out with another new album so that you have new stuff to listen to? Well, this isn't the case with Jarabe de Palo's new disc "Adelantando". It's different enough from each of his previous 4 main albums that it doesn't resemble the same sound. He branches out with new structures in the songs, new formats, some different instruments, new voices, and even a song in Italian. The themes are just as deep but unique to those previously appearing in his work. I didn't love the cd at first and was kind of disappointed. But then a few more listens and I was hooked on several songs. I had the same reaction to Dave Matthews' "Don't Drink the Water" and later was thrilled with it. I just hope as many people love this new creation from Jarabe and he starts to receive the international notoriety that he deserves.

I'll Take The Whiskey.......2007-03-13
I've been a follower of Dale since his first Hightone album "Cheating Heart Attack" (a ripper). He's had his ups and downs since that time but has always emerged triumphant. I saw him last week in Newcastle, Australia and he was everything I had hoped for and more. He brought out his crack band, which actually plays on this disc and they are a top notch group of seasoned session pros. They might not look that good but they sure sound good. This album is another cracker of a record and carries on the tradition of hard-core honky-tonk music based on the "real" country of the 40's, 50's and 60's, not today's CMT rubbish. Keep 'em coming Dale. As an aside, I found Dale to be a true gentleman and hope that life treats him better than in the past. He has also developed into a fantastic guitarist playing that outrageous Tompkins guitar of his.
Dale Watson Whiskey or God.......2007-03-09
If you are a Dale Watson fan you will love this CD Love Sit and drink and cry also Hurts so good You won`t be sorry dale is pure country
Get this One!.......2007-03-03
This 2006 Dale Watson release is, in my opinion, his best work yet. While Nashville and "modern suburban Country Music" continues to pollute the airwaves, Dale Watson never fails to put out quality music. This album has to rank among the finest of this decade. There are 14 songs here, and not a bad one in the bunch. Dale has one of the most distinct voices in country music, with a lot of Merle Haggard style. But his vocals on this one, harken back to the great Lefty (who Merle also imitated), while still maintaining that "no-nonsense" delivery of Dale's. I also have to say that the guitar work is fantastic....very similar and hard charging as that of the Johnny Horton sound or even Marty Stuart! A few standout tracks, including "38:21:34" and the title track "Whiskey or God". The sound and mixing are flawless. Overall, no complaints. I'm already looking for his next release. A+
We could use more Dale Watsons.......2007-01-03
If you miss real country music or wonder what happened to it, buy this CD. Dale is the real thing. Great voice, real heart, great music.
Remarkable.......2006-08-09
This is one of my favorite CDs from Dale; it's hard to believe that some of these songs were rejected by his former record labels!
The title track, Whiskey or God, is actually very spiritual -- and a great song to boot. Like so many things today, it might not pass the 3-second test by a radio programmer -- but if you actually listen to the song, you might just discover something good and meaningful.
I'm a fan -- let's hear some more, Dale!!

Chucho Valdés's piano-led recordings are studies in musical tension and dialogues. On Briyumba Palo Congo, he enlists a pair of percussionists, and Raúl Pineda Roque, the trap drummer, shares with Valdés a smolder that turns to conflagration when their tense interplays burst. Of course much of the fire is locked into the percussion dialogues where patterned drumming inspires improvisation amid fairly strict rhythmic controls. Valdés runs away from the pack in spots, shuffling across the keyboard leaving a wake of chromatic color. Roque does the same, exploding on his drums in fits of even tempos and being tugged back into the Cuban rhythmic rumble promptly by Roberto Vizcaíno Guillót's conga and batá drums, if not Valdés's own hyperimaginative harmonic runs. This is certainly not as flashy as Gonzalo Rubalcaba's dazzling explosions, and with the title suite's choral and vocal exclamations, it's rooted much more solidly in Afro-Cuban traditions. With his medium-hot pacing and his ability to blow solos wide open, it's clear that Valdés's years in Irakere barely prepared the ears for piano work of this magnitude. --Andrew Bartlett
Customer Reviews:
Piano work.......2005-09-29
Another great pice of work from one of the masters of Cuban music. Bebo Valdes a master pianist brings us the wonderfull and rich world of the Cuban culture through his music. Bebo is second generation musician and is succeeded buy his son Chucho Valdés the gentle giant and the best Latin piano player today. Album is a deffinate keeper and a wonderfull addition to your collection.
stunning.......2001-07-02
Quite simply stunning. Essentially flawless, the only criticism I can think of is that his effortless genius is intimidating. Moving, challenging, reeking of musicality, rythmic greatness.
Chucho's nice flow.......2000-08-26
This is my first foray into the "cubop" genre, and chucho slams. i found out about him while listening to bluenote.com's radio station. being a go-go head, the congos are more appealing to me than the rest of the quartet. anyway, my favorite cuts are el rumbion, briyumba palo congo, and caravan.
latin's jazz best album........2000-01-23
A great combination of piano, african drums and cuban rhythms
Briyumba Palo Congo is brilliant.......1999-12-22
Like most of the music Chucho Valdez plays in whatever the setting - solo, with Irakere, with Roy Hargrove's band, or with his own jazz quartet, this recording is full of brilliant playing both from Chucho and from the percussionists. The guy is a giant and effortlessly connects the African roots of jazz to the traditional. A beautiful record and one worth savoring.

... and 1/2 ....strong rhythmic intensity, catchy lyrics & just plain ol' fun rowdiness.......2006-12-31
Playing Time - 38:26 -- If you know what's best for you on a Saturday night, then you'll pick up a copy of "Horseshoes & Hand Grenades," for a driving set of Summar's rockin' country music. Actually, he calls it "farm rock," a convergence of Chuck Berry and George Jones. Full of grit, Trent incorporates strong rhythmic intensity as the foundation for his striking stories and just plain ol' fun rowdiness. The elements all lend perfectly to our listening amusement. They hit the ground with a steady gallop from the first song to the last, even with the brief eccentric punk/grunge moments in "He Stopped Loving Her Today" that will either get you frowning or smiling depending on how open-minded you are to the boys having a little fun with the country classic.
I haven't heard the album that Trent put out in 2000 (or his 1994 "Hank Flamingo" release), but understand that it brought plenty of airplay, gig and tour offers...even landed him a showcase on the Grand Ole Opry. Produced by Rand Bishop, "Horseshoes & Hand Grenades" further indulges us with some eclectic alt-country instrumentalists and background vocalists. Remember the Ozark Mountain Daredevils with their blend of country rock, bluegrass, and southern boogie? Bassman/vocalist Michael "Supe" Granda was a founding member of that group. And the 1980s Atlanta-based Georgia Satellites with their Stones-like guitar grunge? Guitarist/vocalist Dan Baird was a key member of that enjoyable band. Steel guitarist Gary Morse is a regular with Brooks & Dunn. Other experienced musicians in The New Row Mob include Dave Kennedy (drums), Ken McMahan (guitar), and a host of others who appear to a lesser degree on the CD. Mike Webb's piano and B-3 organ are noteworthy.
Besides those collaborations with other Nashville-based writers, a number of the musicians on the album co-wrote many of these songs with Summar. And you may have already heard some of the songs covered by others like Billy Currington ("She Knows What to Do With a Saturday Night"), Gary Allan ("Guys Like Me"), and Jack Ingram ("Love You"). That's a feather is Summar's cap for other up-and-coming singers to acknowledge the sturdiness of Trent's material. Without being too disparaging, I found the similarity of the beat in a few of the songs to create a modicum of banality. But, for the most part, the set progresses as a successful, raucous journey from beginning to end. Reminiscent of the Bakersfield sound, the country rock-infused groove and clever lines convey some deliriously fun messages. Some other catchy hooks, and even some rustic bluegrass flavorings, are found in songs like "Hayride," "Pink John Deere," and "Girl From Tennessee." Hitting you like an express train, "Louisiana Nashville Line" is full of steam. In "Guys Like Me," Trent sings "It's hard to find a place to play my guitar, they're trying to put an end to guys like me." I'd say this album will fetch him plenty of fame and gigs. Trent's well on his way to landing his golden dreams on solid ground. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, OR.)
He's got the goods.......2006-11-30
Trent Summar's got just the right Tennessee-born drawl for the songs that populate "Horseshoes & Hand Grenades." He's also got the mix of self-deprecating humor and emotional depth necessary to elevate country songs with common themes into uncommonly well-told, clever stories with lines like "If you haven't gained or lost at least 20 pounds ... then you really never loved her anyway."
Though a Music Row wag dubbed him "the King of Redneck Rock," there are elements of Eagles-style California country (in "Supposed to Do," a rare ballad that showcases his vocal abilities) and even ska - colliding with Hank Williams III, that is - on the runaway chorus to his otherwise sweet `n' schmaltzy treatment of George Jones' "He Stopped Loving Her Today." But it's no accident that Southern boys Dan Baird, the former Georgia Satellites frontman, and Michael "Supe" Granda, of Ozark Mountain Daredevils fame, are among the album's main contributors (Brooks & Dunn steel guitar player Gary Morse is also featured; ex-Maverick Raul Malo also takes a vocal turn on "Guys Like Me"). Their honky-tonk-flavored instrumentation is threaded adroitly throughout. Summar also shares a dancehall kinship with Gary Allan and Jack Ingram, who recorded "Guys Like Me" and the Summar/Jay Knowles co-written "Love You," respectively. And "She Knows What to Do (With a Saturday Night)," previously recorded by Billy Currington, would be perfect for roadhouse rocker Delbert McClinton. (Perhaps not coincidentally, it was co-written by McClinton's frequent collaborator, Gary Nicholson.)
Summar's knack for smile-inducing wordplay is formidable, but it's the mix of resignation and wistfulness in lines like "I'd like to find a place ... where you can land your dreams on solid ground" (in "Guys Like Me," co-written with Kostas) that convey how well he's honed his songwriting skills. With this album, he should have a few hits of his own.
Real country music.......2006-11-07
This album isn't quite up to the standards of "Trent Summar and the New Row Mob" (2000) or "Hank Flamingo" (1994, his best CD), but it's far better than virtually all of the so-called country put out today. It's mostly rip-roarin', barn-burnin', rockin' country, with a twang and a noticeable Southern accent (and how many of today's pseudo-country singers even have a Southern accent?). The best hillbilly tunes are "Hayride" and "Louisiana Nashville Line," and Trent's version of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is interesting, to say the least. If you like real country music, you'll like this CD.
The Real Deal .......2006-10-15
I love this CD -- Trent Summar is known for his high energy, maximum fun concerts, and I defy anyone to stay seated after turning up the volume on these songs. Trent's version of "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is hilarious--a salute to the old as well as the new. My favorites are Trent's "Love You" (which has climbed the charts for Jack Ingram) and "Guys Like Me". This is a man who truly loves country music and it shows. His band, The New Row Mob, does him proud--these are trained professionals, so sit back and enjoy.

With a twang and a jangle, the Derailers conjure an era of vintage Top 40, when country, soul, rave-up rockabilly, and catchy pop could all be heard on the same AM station. Though Buck Owens remains a seminal influence on the Derailers, the departure of Tony Villaneuva--who founded and fronted the band with Brian Hofeldt--has pushed Hofeldt's pop-rock instincts to the fore. He has recruited a crucial collaborator in producer Buzz Cason, who shares songwriting credit on more than half the material here. The veteran Cason's "Soldier of Love" title cut was an early 1960s hit for Arthur Alexander and was later covered by the Beatles on Live at the BBC, whose inspiration the Derailers channel here. The opening "Cold Beer, Hot Women, and Cool Country Music" and closing "It's Never Too Late for a Party" could have appeared on any Derailers album, as could the Johnny Cash tribute "An American Man" and the instrumental "Poppycock." But the balladry of "The One Before Me," the bittersweet "Every Time It Rains," and the falsetto- and harmony-laden "Everything I Believe In" find the band extending its range. While the variety of styles has Hofeldt sounding like a vocal chameleon, the musical vitality suggests that the band has found new life. --Don McLeese

Derailers derailed.......2007-05-14
Can't put my finger on it but this is not what I've come to expect from this great band. It's boring and it's far short of their previous recors.
A great surprise.......2006-09-27
I was very reluctant to buy this CD, because I couldn't imagine the Derailers without the incredible Tony Villanueva. His amazing honky-tonk voice was the essence of this band (which has had numerous personnel changes over the years). However, I was pleasantly surprised by how good this CD is. Brian Hofeldt has done a great job as the full-time lead singer. While there are a few very fine vintage honky-tonk songs here, the other songs are very good rockabilly/mild country tunes. If you liked the Tony Villanueva Derailers, you'll like this too. And speaking of Tony, I sure hope he has a solo CD coming out soon.
I miss Tony!!.......2006-09-26
I am a long-time Derailers fan but can't listen to them since the departure of Tony Villanueva. Don't get me wrong, Brian Hofeldt is a talented singer and is very charismatic but without Tony it just doesn't work for me.

Derailers - Soldiers of Love.......2006-08-15
This is my first Derailers album. I had heard of them before, but never really wanted to buy an album. I think I've been missing out on a great band!
Derailers' "Soldier of Love" is good - really good - I'm tempted to give it 5 stars but that'll be determined if I'm still listening to this 5 years from now. For now though, this is great "Americana" music. This is what real music is about. This is where country music started, where it has evolved to, and it's nice to see how it can still sound good in the year 2006.
The songs are really good throughout - start to finish. The lyrics and choruses are very catchy without being cheesey - except for the "Get 'Er Done" song - That phrase is so played out by now, you'd think they'd have known better.
This album takes honky tonk, country, rockabilly, and mixes them all together to make a great album. It's a record for good times and cold beer. It's nice to hear real good, quality "country" music every once in awhile.

A generous set of Texas hill country music in the spirit of Luckenbach.......2006-12-28
Playing Time - 1:07:23 -- Featuring live music seven nights a week, the 120-yer-old Luckenbach dancehall in Fredericksburg, Texas hosted this January 19-20, 2006 live recording session with stalwarts of the Palo Duro record label. The place specializes in parties, and a 70ish admission price of $1 was set for the 400 attendees who were lucky enough to win tickets in a lottery (then proceeds went to Health Alliance for Austin Musicians). This guaranteed a large, jovial, and friendly crowd for this big event in the venue that gets its moniker and inspiration from an old hill country town where everybody is somebody according to Jerry Jeff Walker song "Viva! Luckenbach!"
Continuing the gonzo spirit of the Texas Outlaw music movement, this album covers a total of seven of Walker's songs, as well as ones from Guy Clark, Gary P. Nunn, Ray Wylie Hubbard, and Michael Murphy. This album is a tribute to Jerry Jeff's landmark 1973 album Viva! Terlingua! that is recognized as a seminal contribution to the then blossoming Texas outlaw music scene. All nine of the songs that appeared on Walker's original 1973 album have been redone on this "nuevo" project. More generically, this lone star twang and gonzo attitude today are referred to as alt-country, insurgent country, or simply Americana. Interestingly, Jerry Jeff had not been initially consulted about this album project, and he got lawyers involved and filed a lawsuit claiming copyright infringement. Walker also claimed false advertising and misappropriation of his identity.
Musicians participating included Jimmy LaFave, Cory Morrow, John Arthur Martinez, Two Tons of Steel, Ed Burleson, Brian Burns, Gary P. Nunn, McKay Brothers, Morrison-Williams, Walt Wilkins, Tommy and Justin Alverson, The Derailers, and past and present members of Gonzos de Casa. At track 8, Kent Finlay even recites a 5-minute Hondo Crouch poem entitled "Luckenbach Daylight." Consistent with their business plan and marketing strategy, the record label previewed the album at the 2006 Americana Music Conference in a special Luckenbach replica booth. Also, this is just the first in Palo Duro's Luckenbach Texas music series that will presumably offer more hour-long live samplers from the dancehall, the objective being to honor the historical significance of the tiny town west of Austin where many a musical career was launched.
If you're looking for some "Nuevo!" Texas country music in the spirit of Luckenbach, this album is worth checking out even though it's a tad loose in spots. It's still a fun ride! As a result of the pending litigation, all commercial distribution of the album was suspended. However, the Palo Duro record label intends to aggressively pursue its right to distribute the album. Let's hope the lawsuit is resolved in a timely manner so that this and future albums in the series can reach our CD players soon. Especially if your mind keeps roamin', and your heart keeps longin' to be home in a Texas bar. (Joe Ross)

Not your typical Spanish music.......2004-08-03
When I asked most Spaniards what they listened to, they would begin to rant off a fairly long list of American or Brittish groups. Anything but something native Spanish. When I asked them what Spanish groups they liked, I got mostly, "We are known for Flamenco music." One name that did get thrown around a few times though was Jarabe de Palo. He became famous in 1999 with his first hit, "La Flaca," a bluesy / latin lament about a guy wanting a kiss from a sexy, skinny bar girl. Jarabe turns his back on the pop formulas that have made his fellow compatriots like Enrique Iglesias or David Bisbal popular and instead does what few do today: be a musician. His guitar playing rocks you into a warm little world when he wants to be sweet, and into a latin smoke-filled tasca when he wants to spice things up a bit. Jarabe has some Cuban influences in his tunes and even teams up with Celia Cruz in the last song, "A lo loco." Ballads like "Depende" and "Agua" are simple, yet rich in harmony and guitar melodies. He likes to throw his listener into a mix that is anything but "puro" because in the so called "pure" there is no "future" (En lo puro no hay futuro). This is a CD to play after or before some James Taylor to get the heartbeat going. If you want a little taste of Jarabe, watch his video "Bonito" on AOL radio, one that Alanis Morisette liked so much, she copied for a song on her latest album. Quality songwriting, from the heart, and not from the Pop-tune machine.
