Yet Another Great Rush Album of The New Rush Era.......2007-07-09

Another great achievement for Rush and their synthisizered sound. Geddy's bass lines are buried here for the keyboards and that probably pissed off a lot of the old Rush fans, but times they were a changing. In the midst of the 80s there was the threat of Nuclear War and Reganomics and synthisizers. Rush took advantage with their musical prowess and kept heading forward. Here are the songs:

Distant Early Warning - I remember the first time I saw the video and Geddy's new mullet and I thought OH MY GAWD! WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO RUSH? I was 15 years old and anything that wasn't hard rock or metal was a waste of my time. How wrong I was. This song is another signature Rush tune. Intense. Great lyrics. Awesome.

Afterimage - Depressing. That's the word I will use to describe this song. Depressing. Written about a friend of the band's who had passed away, this song still gives me chills. Dark. Great.

Red Sector A - Another personal favorite. Written about concentration camps, there is a stark clarity here that Neil portrays in the lyrics that makes my blood run cold.

The Enemy Within - Part I of the Fear Trilogy (along with Witch Hunt and The Weapon)and a live staple for a few years. This is Rush unleashed. The lyrics flow, the music churns. It doesn't get any better than this.

The Body Electric - Is that Geddy's bass? Hadn't heard very much from it in the last dozen songs or so. The title is from a Ray Bradbury short story. The lyrics are pure sci-fi. 1-0-0-1-0-0-1 Binary code. Inventive. Rocking.

Kid Gloves - Great song along the lines of The Analog Kid. The fact that Rush doesn't believe very much in filler is a good thing. Every song on the entire album stands out on its own.

Red Lenses - A very underrated and over-looked song. A personal favorite. Experimental in structure, the lyrics are very cool and trippy.

Between The Wheels - They started playing this live around the Vapor Trails tour and I've always like this song. You know how that rabbit feels going under your spinning wheels. That's kinda dark. Oh yeah!

Overall, I think that Signals, Grace Under Pressure and the forthcoming Power Windows mark the last stretch of truly great Rush albums. Synth-heavy like its brother Signals, Grace Under Pressure showed us that maturing Rush is still great Rush.

A definite departure for the the band at the time but I wore the record out then and am working on the CD now.

Experiences to the extreme!.......2007-06-09

With "Grace under Pressure" Rush continues on the same musical track that characterize their 1982's release Signals and to some degree even 1981's Moving Pictues. The epic song structures and science fiction lyrics are replaced by a more modern and radio friendly approach similar to bands like Ultravox and the Police. Still the music maintained the characteristics that make people appreciate Rush so much and many of the songs have become live favourites for the fans and some even consider Grace Under Pressure to be their best release of the eighties (personally I think it's Hold Your Fire). Because even if their new musical approach in the eighties were influenced by the eighties music wave Rush still were quite far outside of it when it comes to the musical and lyrical ingredients. They still maintained to create something new, fresh and intelligent; a complex lyrical approach linked with colourful, deep and emotionful music. GUP is for you who are in the mood for pompous, catchy, spacey and progressive Arena rock!

Cold War/New Wave Rush Delivers The Goods!.......2007-06-07

The year 1984 finds Rush in a world more terrified of nuclear war than any other period since the Cuban Missle Crisis, as well as a music scene dominated by the likes of U2, Simple Minds, The Police, Tears for Fears and others.

That about raps up Grace Under Pressure, both thematically and musically.

I agree with other reviews that note the darkness of the album (the terms "bleak" and "cold" are frequently used), as well as its "takes a few listens to fully appreciate" feel. However, with that said, GUP is one of several underatted Rush masterpieces from the 80s. I will even go as far as to say that there are moments on this album that are so emotionally moving and powerful that it sometimes rivals Rush's more popular and universally praised efforts. As a matter of fact, while I wouldn't dare attempt to rank all Rush LPs from the beginning to present, GUP has attained a safe place in my top five.

I don't usually do this, but I think that given how good yet overlooked this album is, I will do a brief track by track review:

1) Distant Early Warning-Great opening track, probably the best known from the album, dealing w/ survival in the aftermath of a nuclear war. Most notable about this song is Alex's Andy Summers/The Edge stylized playing, that sets the mood for the rest of GUP.

2)Afterimage-Criminally underappreciated and emotionally charged, dealing with the passing on of loved ones. Just listen to Geddy's delivery of Neil's lyrics (and try to hold back the tears).

3)Red Sector A-By far the darkest song on the album, addressing the Holocaust specifically but mass persecution generally as well. Given Geddy's family history, I don't how he was able to pull off singing this without breaking down!

4)The Enemy Within-Great rocking track (almost danceable) driven by a ska-like beat, but with a forceful and moody edge (i.e., don't expect it to sound like "New World Man").

5)The Body Electric-Neil decided to throw in some good old fashioned Sci-Fi lyrics on this one (I believe it's based on a Walt Whitman poem). While the song has a kind of Thomas Dolby electronic feel to it, Alex manages to throw in a totally crazy solo as well.

6)Kid Gloves-A straightforward, guitar-driven rocker; clearly a concession to the old school fan base.

7)Red Lenses-Very strange, and very unusual for Rush. It's more or less a jam w/ a sort of stream-of-conciousness lyric delivery. Check out Neil's intricate percussion work on this one.

8)Between The Wheels-Perhaps the most downright impressive track on GUP, BTW combines a frankly discordant synth theme and lead guitar work with lyrics (particularly the chorus) that will send shivers down your spine once you read them (I'm so glad they pulled this one out on the R30 tour!)

There you have it. One of several 80s Rush classics that never has gotten it's full credit due, Grace Under Pressure combines new wave fashion and dark, politically and emotionally charged lyrics with a wonderful balance of guitars and synths. Highly recommended.

Are we the last ones left alive?.......2007-04-29

Most Rush folks will say the biggest change in their music was from Moving Pictures to Signals. Musically that might be true but in terms of sheer quality I'd have to say it was from Signals to G/P. For the first time I found myself skipping multiple songs from a Rush album. While I give the album 3 stars which I consider 'good' (if I could give it 2.5 I would), it lacks the power that all albums up to this point possess. The first side is fairly solid with 'Red Sector A' being my favorite by far. Fantastic rhythm and eerie lyrics tell the story many have heard before about Geddy's mom being a holocaust survivor.

The second half of the record is weak. I don't like the rhythm of 'Body Electric' or 'Red Lenses' at all and the off-beat verses of 'Wheels' clash with a catchy sounding chorus. Neil was clearly trying a lot of new things on this record. Some of it worked well and others didn't at all.

Favorite Rush Album.......2007-03-16

I am big fan of Rush. Own all their albums - even some of the more recent trash - and this is my favorite album, bar none. I know it isn't Careess Of Steel or Hemispheres or Fly By Night, but every band has to change or die. This album and Hold Your Fire are the high points of their synthesizer sound. Every song is a classic.

Maybe my favorite Rush album, actually.......2006-08-21

For those whose minds are locked into Rush's first few albums, well, this is not the same at all. It's much more...progressive? I don't know what the word is, but it is definitely not the hard rock they started out playing. But this record just JAMS from start to finish. There is a certain flow to the whole thing that I really like, and it abounds with very intricate playing. Listen to the sample clips and make up your own mind...

Junk - PURE JUNK.......2004-01-21

This album was the start of the Great RUSH fall. I would rather listen to crickets chirp for 45 minutes than hear this trash. Stick with the 70's stuff and you will be fine.

rush in all their glory.........2000-05-06

GRACE UNDER PRESSURE is the first Rush album I have listened and still one of my favourites. Mostly, Moving Pictures is considered to be their best effort but this album and Signals are their best in my opinion. I recommend these albums to younger listeners to get a better view of style and substance going hand in hand with this wonderfully expressive trio. Enjoy!

A good change of direction for Rush.......1999-05-08

This was a really good step in the right direction for Rush. Being that I'm the biggest fan of their stuff from 1984-89, I think this was a good album. "Distant Early Warning" is cool, "Red Sector A" is great, and "Afterimage is good. Their first album where keyboards starting to become a major part of their songs. Not my favorite album, but it opened the way for their fantastic classic Power Windows album. The album cover is a work of art. Keyboards were not a bad thing for Rush; they added a new texture that is very enjoyable.

Great Record!.......2006-06-16

First, I would like to address something that Deathbox13 wrote a few reviews down. The reviewer is calling My Ruin an Otep rip off.

That reviewer does not know their history! Tairrie B started off as a rapper and was later in a rap metal band called Manhole. She rapped, screamed, and did spoken word in Manhole. Manhole's first release All Is Not Well was released in 1996. Otep's first EP Jihad was released in 2001. Who is ripping off who? Please do your research...

This is My Ruin's finest hour. Tairrie sounds AMAZING on this record.

Beauty Fiend.......2004-11-17

Well, I find myself to be in love in all of My Ruin's albums, and this one is no different. The band has a great sound, I'd highly recomend this CD for anyone who you know who enjoys their style.

This is an ok band. Nothing special simialiar to Otep, but Otep is MUCH better and its the best band ever. Well at least its better than Kittie which suks. Less than half the songs are good. They have some spoken word tracks and rapping like otep, can u say ripoff! So overall only about 4 or 5 ok songs.

Appallingly bad.......2004-08-13

*Yawn* Yet another dismal album by a band whose members try so desperately to look gothic and scary in the booklet. This album really is predictable. You've heard it all before in the form of Slipknot, but there was at least a trace of melody with them, unlike My Ruin. I really don't see how anyone could class this album as good music when there's clearly nothing to hear other than a disorganized mess of screams. Tairrie B or whatever her name is cannot sing. Ok she can moan and groan and squeal but its all done with the aid of various vocal machines. The songs are quite frankly appalling. "Beauty Fiend" wouldn't have been so bad had it been a one off but no, every other song sounds the same. There are also two cover songs which are embarrasingly bad compared with their originals. The song "Miss Anne-Thorpe" could have been good if only Jessicka (from JOJ) had sung it all by herself. Just like Kittie, My Ruin are another band who continue to go from bad to worse but it's to be expected when there's not an ounce of talent involved.

Quality Music.......2004-06-27

By reading other people's reviews about this album which I've listened to. Tairrie B goes further into her thoughs a feelings not only on feminism, which I feel is a positive aspect (which have stated on my review of the prevouis album) but deep personal feelings about people shes known in genaral pure brilliance. There is a real intelligence in every single track and the two most prominent for me are "Miss Ann Thrope" with Jessicka of "Jack Off Jill" and "Scarling" and truly real, kinetic song which hence the name states her views on humanity.The other track is "My War" which is powerful in its message to person who has gone behind her back. A feeling we all can relate to.

Dannii has completely taken command of the Dance genre once again! As she's so masterfully done with "Don't Wanna Lose This Feeling" and the equally stunning "Don't Wanna Lose This Groove," this one is just as amazing. "So Under Pressure" is more than a club groove, it joins DWLTF as another the club anthem for a generation. Dannii, you've created another masterpiece for the dancefloor!

Riffs & Rays mix-my favorite remix off of the single. The beat is just so good on it! 5/5

Thriller Jill remix-Probably my least favorite remix on here but it's still good. 4/5

Hot 21st Century Disco.......2007-05-24

Dannii Minogue can always be counted on to release hot 21st century disco. So Under Pressure is fab-u-lous! Lots of different vibes with the multitude of mixes on this set. Dannii's disco is full of passion. Gotta luv it!

Wow!.......2007-01-10

The latest release from the youngest Minogue proves to be a very interesting listen. It isn't vocally challenging, preferring to stay on the lower side of the vocal spectrum, but that actually sounds pretty good. I love the 80's influence this song thrives off of. All of the remixes sound completely different from one another; Thriller Jill perhaps providing the most avant-garde of the bunch. My personal favorites include the Steve Pitron mix, which seems to channel Justin Timberlake's "Rock Your Body", and the Soul Seekerz mix. They can do no wrong.

John Scofield meets Bill Frisell.......2007-03-22

I feel by rights this album should be headlined "John Scofield and Bill Frisell" and I wonder why it isn't. Maybe because Scofield wrote all the songs?

Anyway, the two guitar maestros (Scofield on electric and Frisell on electric and acoustic) are backed on the ten songs here by Charlie Haden on bass and Joey Baron on drums. Additionally, they are joined by a wonderful horn section - made up of Randy Brecker on flugelhorn, John Clark on French horn and Jim Pugh on trombone - on five of the songs, namely, "Honest I Do", "Twang", "Pat Me", "Bill Me" and "Unique New York". The horns work well and remind me of the sound Scofield produced on his classic acoustic Quiet album in 1996.

Favourite songs? The opener, "You Bet", "Honest I Do" and the brilliant closing ballad, "Unique New York". But as with more or less any John Scofield album, there's nothing here except high quality music.

John and Bill Frisell. What else can I say?.......2005-04-23

Fantastic John Scofield set. This was my first John Scofield purchase after having had some exposure to him by way of Jaco Pastorius' instructional bass video and John Patitucci's solo album Sketchbook.

Overall, I think this is a fantastic album. John's writing is sometimes traditional, sometimes clever -- the opening track, "You Bet," is the first song I think I would ever describe as 'fun' -- but always smart and clean and easy to follow and listen to.

I get the idea that John was thinking outside of the box on this album, owing to his having Bill Frisell (guitar), Charlie Haden (bass) and Joey Baron (drums) back him, along with a small brass section on a few of the tunes. These guys each bring their own distinctive styles to the table and the result is a smorgasbord of rich sonic textures and unabashed musical adventure.

For those familiar with John's work before or after this disc, the music may surprise you. The first three numbers are fairly straightforward and are pretty much straight ahead jazz, but gears quickly shift when we reach "Scenes From A Marriage." Once the head is stated, Charlie and Joey kick into overdrive and John just goes with the flow and keeps right up with them even though he probably has no idea where they may be going. John wraps up his solo and Bill takes the cake by beautifully playing a variation on the main theme while Charlie and Joey switch to a more free jazz backing.

Then Bill stomps on the gas and switches to his distorted sound and provides his own loops in the background. He gets crazy with the theme and then brings it back down a notch by providing an ethereal ambience while John restates the head. Charlie and Joey then break off to do some free jazz and then the whole gang comes back in to wrap the tune up.

"Twang" is a blues-inflected swinger and "Pat Me" -- a nod to Pat Metheny -- gives Bill the chance to showcase his acoustic skills. "Pretty Out" is musical mayhem waiting to happen and Bill certainly doesn't disappoint on this tune, either. This song, however, may wear on some people and even John has a hard time getting the rest of the guys back on the same sheet to restate the head. They finally do it and Bill's ending loop -- which fades out to end the track -- is picture perfect and is wonderfully accentuated by Charlie's unchractersically laid-back bass with John's overchorused chords floating above them both. The mental picture I get just from the sound of it is like picking up a far-away radio broadcast with an old transistor radio.

Up next is "Bill Me" and gives Bill some room to stretch out. After that is "Same Axe." It's a short tune built around a typically Scofield A-A-B-A riff and both guitarists solo simultaneously before restating the head and ending the tune. "Unique New York" is the quietest tune of the bunch -- and the only one with a tongue-twister as a title -- and as the closing song on the album, it's definitely in sharp contrast to most of the rest of the tunes in this set, kind of like a sonic sorbet to cleanse the palate.

All in all, I think this a classic disc. While John almost seems to be overshadowed by the likes of Bill and Charlie at times, with their preponderance for running out into left field, he manages to rein them in when needed and is actually pushed by their musical experimentation to try some new and different stuff himself.

A must-have for either the serious Scofield fan or the serious Frisell fan.

John Scofield, Super Genius.......2003-03-25

I'm surprised that there are only a handful of reviews here. In my opinion, Scofield's CDs of the early 90s will someday be considered jazz classics. ("Time on My Hands", "Meant to Be", "What We Do", and this one.) The writing is top-notch, original, and quite often brilliant. The playing is inspired, cohesive, and virtuosic. The line-ups are amazing. On this album, Bill Frissell is just the perfect complement to Scofield's playing -- smooth to Sco's angular. His solo on "You Bet" is one of those rare pieces of improvisation that sounds truly composed. Charlie Haden is, well, Charlie Haden. Superb. Joey Baron, on drums, is a great choice to glue together these quirky tunes and musicians -- he's a very, very interesting (and excellent) player. Scofield is, as usual, totally in the pocket.

The tunes here are, to be honest, not overall my favorite of Scofield's. "You Bet" is brilliant; "Bill Me" as well. Sco's foray into horn arrangements is a nice touch, but strikes me as experimental here, and overlayed rather than integral. (A bit tenuous, too, come to think of it.) I think he's at his best when he's more minimal in his arrangements.

If you're not familiar with Scofield's work of the early 90s, check out "Time on My Hands", and if you like that, definitely give this album a spin.

Sco and Frisell lay down some pretty solid tunes.......2002-11-21

This is one of John Scofield's more-memorable early-90s Blue Note albums, partnering with the equally identifiable and unique guitarist Bill Frisell. Frisell also brings with him Joey Baron on drums, who is a lot looser than Sco's usual Bill Stewart. Stewart's awesome, but Joey Baron's a nice change; he brings a lot to the proceedings here. Charlie Haden, as on _Time On My Hands_, rounds out the quartet on bass. He's extremely competent, but his recent playing like this sounds so studied and exact compared with his work with Ornette Coleman way back when.

I actually kinda miss Joe Lovano on this one.

Boy, when John Scofield writes a great tune, it's truly terrific. "You Bet" and "Honest I Do" are among the standouts here tunewise. Some songs sound as if they were written particularly with Bill Frisell in mind, as in "Twang". The horn arrangements rounding out the harmonies do well to complement Bill's playing, too. At times, Bill sounds like he's doing a pretty fair imitation of Scofield. "Pat Me" seems to invoke the spirit of the inimitable Pat Metheny, and actually anticipates Scofield's collaboration with him two years later on the masterful "I Can See Your House From Here." Definitely pick this one up if you like either Scofield or Frisell.

Since there were two reviews here and they were polar opposites, I thought I would add something.

First of all, this is not "the guitar solo that never ends" and there is a bass solo or two on this CD.

There are so many magical moments on this album. There is a telepathy between Scofield and Frisell and they compliment each other beautifully. I think 'Honest I Do' and 'Scenes From A Marriage' are two instances where this happens.
