Dowland did for lute music what Haydn did for the string quartet and Beethoven the piano sonata. The finest lutenist and songwriter of his age--he composed several of the greatest hits of the late 16th and early 17th centuries--the surviving lute works constitute a sort of encyclopedia of the possibilities of the instrument. There are song arrangements, dance pieces, tributes to the composer's friends, even a musical self-portrait. Much of the music is fashionably sad. Lute songs generally deal with the agony of lost love, and Dowland's most popular tune was called Lachrimae (Tears). Paul O'Dette is simply the best lutenist alive. These five discs are available together at a special price, or separately. A reference edition. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Outstanding.......2007-03-31
If you are a fan of the music of John Dowland, you must own this CD. The playing is outstanding to say the least.
It's not heavy breathing.......2006-08-22
It's great that O'Dette gives us the complete solo works, of course. I have the common reaction to O'Dette: his technique is flawless, his performance unengaging.
Others have remarked on the "heavy breathing" noticeable on the recordings -- it's not heavy breathing, but the movement of his fingers on the gut strings making that sound.
Technically good, emotionally bland. .......2006-04-11
Considering the extreme paucity of (especially solo) lute recordings currently available worldwide,
but especially in the US, this set becomes an essential "must have" for all lovers of the lute.
Yet it somehow disappoints.
I am sure that Paul O'Dette is brimming over with virtuousity and a technical expertise
that I am hardly one to pass sound judgement upon.
But the recordings have a flatness and monotony;
the songs are rendered with precision, but seem to lack feeling, empathy, or enthusiasm throughout the offering.
It is an impressive compendium, and I'm glad I purchased it.
There are very few lutenists out there producing any music at all, so Mr. O'Dette should certainly be praised
for delivering such a substantial feast to our ears.
It just should have had more flavor.
Where is Konrad Ragossnig when you need him?
Highly recommended.......2005-10-23
I bought Volume 1 of this set a couple of years ago. It has become one of my favorite CDs, so I thought I would enjoy the full set. I have not been disappointed. I find the sound quality excellent, the playing superb. The included booklet has a lot of interesting background material. The music is great as background for a dinner party or intimate conversation, but has depth aplenty for concentrated listening. I often listen to it while working at the computer where I swear it improves concentration and productivity!
A few tunes appear more than once as Dowland reused some work, but the arrangements are sufficiently different to be interesting. It is his complete lute works, after all. Some might criticise the set for sounding too much in the same style. It is the work of one composer, and if you happen to like the style, as I do, this is a pro rather than a con.
Another reviewer mentioned obtrusive breathing on the recording. I had listened to Volume 1 for two years before reading the review and had not noticed this. On listening carefully, there is breathing audible, but I do not find it a problem. Perhaps it depends whether one listens to the music or the background.
just a warning..........2005-10-14
Beautiful music, but... you can hear Paul's heavy breathing throughout. Apparently a lot of other reviewers either don't hear the heavy breathing, or aren't bothered by it, but for me, it's a near deal-breaker. Go ahead and mark my review as unhelpful, but I had to put the warning out there.

Tha House is here .......2005-07-05
I have to give this 4 stars as I would already consider this a modern day CLASSIC. If you like westcoast rap you are a fool for not buying this. The rooster says it all: Snoop Dogg, Soopafly, E-White, LaToiya, RBX, Kokane & Daz with beats by Quaze, Fred Wreck, DJ Premier, Hi-Tek, Soopafly, Meech Wells and others.
Im a big Kokane fan, and since this has Kokane on six tracks I couldnt be happier. It's also good to see good ol' RBX do his thang on this (even do his "Remember Me?" routine is getting a bit old). But a really good CD; and of course the Doggystyle All-Stars DVD is a must too!
Another mediocre effort from Snoop.......2004-10-25
This album is mediocre and has no great tracks. It has some booming production on some tracks and horrible on others. Hi Tek did 4 songs, Meech Wells, Soopafly each did 2, and EZ Elpee, ALChemist, Fred Wreck, DJ Premier, DJ Slip, DJ Scratch, Quaze, Vinnie Bernard, Michael Angelo, Nottz, Ep all do 1 song. it does have the nice voice of Latoiya Williams (I'm not and R&B fan and I don't think she fits in on this album at all) and it has a little too much of Kokane's whiney-voiced hooks. Features newcomer E-White who has mediocre ability and old-timer raspy/harsh voiced RBX, as well as Snoop Dogg himself. It has 8 songs I skip, 8 are ok, and the other 3 are good. Not highly recommended by me.

Latoiya Williams
LaToiya Williams is the new Queen of Soul.......2002-12-05
OK, I have to admit first that I haven't heard all of this album yet. But I have heard the LaToiya Williams-tracks. She is amazing; Aretha Franklin, Belita Woods and Chaka Khan rolled into one and then some. Mary J Blige or Angie Stone are not even in the same league as Latoiya Williams. Don't mistake this for old skool 70s retro. Fallen Star is a very sophisticated production that expands the g-funk style. Moving from the negativity of the gangsta-era to these positive vibes Snoop proves himself to be a bigger man than the likes of Suge Knight. Latoiya Williams' voice is full of love. This is what we need now.
More RBX please.......2002-11-27
This album is pretty good. Snoop has proved himself to be a leading executive rap producer. He really is on top form these days. I had to buy this album cos I buy everything Snoop does, plus I can't get enough of RBX. I didn't like Soopafly's solo album but his rapping and production is much better on this album. I still won't be tempted to buy his next releaase though. E White is good and Kokane and Latoya Williams are excellent as ever. Still I probably won't be tempted to buy their solo albums either. I want an RBX album. I think he's just being lazy not making one. He raps on the odd song, on the odd album, but features several times here. Yet he's the only one of the Allstars who isn't planning a solo album anytime soon. Get to work Naborator, yes I remember you. You drop bombs, you have no remorse, but do you make albums?
One of the Slept on Albums of 2002.......2002-11-14
I had my doubts on this one. I went ahead and purchased and liked it. Snoop gives a of producers- Buckwild, Hi-Tek, & Soopafly. All the beats are coo and everyone comes off nice. My favorite tracks are "Dogg House America", "Not Like It Was", "Doh Doh", "Are You Ready", "Light That S-- Up", and a few others. This is a must add to your cd collection.

There are about four good songs on this album. The rest are not that good. However it does contain an excellent mix of Oxygene. That is an incredible song.
SoundBASE???.......1999-07-18
I purchased this cd due to the SoundBASE three dimensional Stereo sound on this disc. I couldn't hear much of a difference.. And it didn't help that most of the tracks were quite forgettable. The only good tracks on here are Whatever Girl's "Activator" (remixed by Johnny Vicious - who also worked on Deborah Cox & Whitney Houston) and I Love Music (note for this track - it is called the "Fire Island Mix", but it is NOT remixed by Heller & Farley, who usually use the name Fire Island on their remixes, it is remixed by the Development Corporation - who have done remixes for Urban Cookie Collective & Haddaway). The rest of these songs are highly forgettable. Spend your money on something better.
Great CD From the Early Days of Techno.......1999-07-17
If you like techno that you can actually listen to while not drunk then this is your CD. I highly recomend it.

Customer Reviews:
GET HIGH ON ACID LOUNGE!!!.......2003-03-25
I BOUGHT "WELCOME TO THE ACID LOUNGE" TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE COMP CDS I SEEM TO ALWAYS PURCHASE FROM WATER MUSIC RECORDS. FOR A MINUTE THERE, I WAS BEGINNING TO THINK I WAS THE LABEL'S SPOKESPERSON. ANYWAY, I REALLY HAD NO WAY OF SAMPLING IT TO HEAR WHAT IT SOUNDED LIKE, SO I BOUGHT IT ON A WHIM, AND BASED ON AN ATTRACTIVE CD COVER. THERE WERE NOTABLES ON ACID LOUNGE LIKE KRUDER AND DORFMEISTER, THE DINING ROOMS, GOTAN PROJECT (THERE'S THAT "EPOCA" SONG AGAIN--ARRRRGH!!), AND EASY ACCESS ORCHESTRA, BUT THE GOOD THING IS ACID LOUNGE IS FULL OF FOLKS I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF BEFORE. I WAS HIGHLY IMPRESSED WITH THIS CD... THE MOST "STAND-OUT-ISH" (IF THAT'S A WORD) SONGS ON "ACID LOUNGE" ARE 45 DIPS' SUPER-FUNKY CUTS, "ORGAN", "PORNO JUNKIES" AND "GREEN TOMATOES", TIM LOVE LEE'S SULTRY "TWILIGHT RESERVATION", DISJAM'S EROTIC "BEACHBOY", AIM'S 60'S-INFLUENCED "WHAT PEOPLE DO ALL DAY", SOUL DRUMMER'S COOL AND SWANKY "EAST SIDE STORY", LISA EKDAHL'S LATE NIGHT LOUNGER, "DAYBREAK" AND CRACKPOT'S FUN AND FUNKY "TIPPY TIPPY TOE."
LOOK OUT WATER MUSIC RECORDS!! I THINK YOU HAVE SOME STRONG COMPETITION HERE, ESPECIALLY IF THIS LABEL (HED KANDI, IS IT?) CONTINUES TO PUT OUT RARE AND INFECTIOUS GROOVES AS THE ONES ON "ACID LOUNGE." NOT ONLY THAT, BUT THEY GIVE YOU A COOL COMIC BOOK TO READ--THE SIGNIFICANCE OF IT BEATS THE H-E-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS OUTTA ME--BUT IT'S GOOD TO SEE THAT A RECORD LABEL TAKES THE TIME TO PUT TOGETHER SUCH NICE AND DETAILED PACKAGING AS WELL AS DARN GOOD SONGS! I CAN'T WAIT FOR "ACID LOUNGE IN SPACE" TO HIT A LOCAL RECORD STORE IN MY TOWN. IF IT'S ANYTHING LIKE THIS COMP CD COLLECTION, IT'S AS GOOD AS BOUGHT!!
Inspired weirdness that gets better and better..........2002-11-29
Uneasy listening? This can only refer to the way some tracks are compiled/mixed together by 45 Dip, which at first is a bit challenging in places. But what do you expect from a double cd that describes itself as being banned in 7 countries, 12 planetary systems and the 9th dimension? This is not your average downtempo compilation.
Soon enough, this weird blend of latin, lounge and other undescribable stuff starts to make a lot of sense, and I am now hooked. Three of 45 Dip's own tracks are included and they stand out within a consistently high quality selection.
Hallucinogenic Recipe.......2002-07-01
I'm a big fan of jazz and not much interested on electronic music. But the lounge music really makes me feel good, because of it's variety and complexity.
This album is a must buy for every fan of good and relaxing music, specially if listened after a long work day, having a cigar, laying back and looking at your stereo...
Disc 2 is, in my opinion, the best, on account of it's elaborated songs. The album concept is fantastic and it even comes with comic book inside.
Worth every penny!

love it.......2006-04-15
Believe it or not I bought this on vinyl when it came out back in the days GREAT for remembering old xciting times
awesome retro!!.......2005-10-31
I've been looking for this compilation for many years now, thanks Amazon! This cd brings back so many good times of the eightys dance scene, especially here in Houston, Tx! Remember Network, Detour, Excess, Aftermath(AM), Energys, N10city, 6400, CPR, and so many other clubs back in the 80's and into the 90's with places like club Some?? This cd brings the true essence of those clubs back to life, and I now use these songs in my own night club on retro nights! Let these times live on forever! DL
AWESOME ERA & MUSIC- XTC MUSIC.......2002-07-29
By far one of the best compilations put together by razmormaid records on one disc and a personal favorite, wish there were more like this one!! Great XTC MUSIC, A TIME WE WILL NEVER FORGET, Oops, Maybe some of us!! If you like CLUB 6400 remixes, then this is for you, down in Houston where it all started and is sweeping the nation with Rave & Techno Music!
Fans of industrial and early techno, take note.......2000-08-05
This CD is an excellent example of early techno from the late '80s. Please note that the review from "guyville2k" is based on this person's own taste, and is therefore biased. If you are a fan of industrial, or early techno, this CD should definitely be of interest to you. As an added bonus, half of the songs on the CD are remixes from the famous DJ team of Ben Watt and Art Maharg, aka Razormaid! Fans of BiGod 20, Front 242, and the like should take note. Some great stuff here!
low grade techno.......2000-05-13
Bad breaks, bad drum programming, really stale beats. Ho-hum. I've been inflicting Vol. 1 on myself to try and see its use. There is none. Spare yourself and skp this disc. Look, instead, to Mint Royale, Fat Boy Slim, Groove Armada, or Air, all of whom are far better at creating cool dance music than this dross.
