The influence of Bristol, U.K.'s Massive crew on bringing trippy beats to the foreground is immeasurable. Not only were they the early test ground for other alterna-hop stars (ex-clansman Tricky, former songstresses Nicolette and Martina, and the lesser known productionists Smith & Mighty), they've spread their influence to everyone from fellow Bristol residents Portishead to Björk. Blue Lines is Massive's debut record and is the second musical union of Bristol's renowned collective, Wildbunch. The emotional purging and beat-driven orchestral movement of "Unfinished Sympathy" was among the first signs of life in contemporary English trip-hop culture. Other masterpieces, like "Daydreaming," which features Shara Nelson, Tricky, and other friends on the mic, throb with deep, dubby beats and soulful ambiance. Blue Lines marks the beginning of a musical legacy that is ever expanding. --Daniel Shumate

5 out of 5 stars trip the hop fantastic.......2007-05-11

massive attack's 'blue lines' is a classic example of melding deep bass lines, great percussion tracks, fabulous vocals by tricky and shara nelson and inventive samples into the music phenom known as trip hop.

many have tried and failed at creating music this good. this is the kind of sound that can sit in the background or take center stage at any event. and its inventiveness is matched only by its timelessness. this cd sounds as good now as it did 15+ years ago.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-04-19

There is nothing much left to say about Massive Attack's masterpiece of "trip-hop" that is Blue Lines.

Tricky's raps are classy and smart and the warm synth work is both inspiring and brilliant. The deep dub-like bass grooves on this album are legendary. "Unfinished Symphony" is a soulful pop masterpiece. This album is displayed prominently on my CD rack.

Ok, I will stop the praise..only if you buy this album now.

5 out of 5 stars one of the most underrated debuts ever.......2007-03-22

if there is ever an overlooked album this is definitely one of them. from the moment "Safe from Harm" starts we are encapsulated by this unique Bristol sound. what makes this Bristol sound so unique is the using of vintage sounds and putting them into such new settings. this album is definitely un-categorizable. we have soul/R&B, dub, hip-hop and even the hint of the Portishead like vintage soundtrack sound. this album is most certainly seed planting and both sides of the Atlantic have undoubtedly taken this to full advantage. never has an album had a "i know i've heard this somewhere" kind of attitude.

5 out of 5 stars Consider the context..........2007-01-16

An Italian, and a couple of Afro-Caribeans, living in Bristol, where a whole new scene is emerging, with the likes of Tricky, Portishead and Roni Size producing new beats. You produce your first album and name your band Massive Attack, only for George Bush senior to invade Kuwait. Hence the band became known (for a short while) as Massive (and I did have a copy simply named Massive till it was stolen - if you have one you have a rarity).

Like their other albums they use a female guest vocalist - this time soul singer Shola Ahma, who later went solo (maybe they'd have kept her?) What you have is slickly produced music that captures the early 90's. Their later albums are more sophisticated, btu this is where it all began.

Amazon.com essential recording

When Jazzie B and his Bristol crew released this debut--which was called Keep on Movin' in the U.S., after its first hit--in 1989, at the height of twice-a-second dance beats, it was a landmark event in the club music scene. They slowed down their rhythms and brought in subtle, soulful vocals (mostly from Caron Wheeler); more intriguingly, they structured the disc like a club DJ set. Some songs, such as the giddy "Fairplay," were presented straight, but others appeared only as almost-instrumental dub or as a groove with toasting-influenced spiels by Jazzie or (in the case of the smash "Back to Life") a cappella. This reissue expands the original with some B-sides, alternate versions, and the fully orchestrated single version of "Back to Life," as well as a superfluous drum & bass remix of "Keep on Movin.'" --Douglas Wolk

5 out of 5 stars CANNOT SAY ENOUGH ABOUT THIS ONE.......2007-02-02

i love this right here because what was not on the original album is on this one. my neck tingles from the mems of first hearing it. the one that stands out for me though is not what you think!!!!! for me, it was thast piano part of JAZZY'S GROOVE. just that part DA-DUN-DUH-DUH-DUH-NUH drives me absolutely INSANE!!!! of course, there is KEEP ON MOVIN', BACK TO LIFE, ARE YOU READY, and FEELING FREE that gets me levitated. look here, if you like them grooves that take you somewhere else in their own way, then you will dig this one here.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD!!!.......2006-11-05

British soul at its best. It introduced Caron Wheeler who went solo shortly after this CD came out. The songs on this CD still sound good to this day. Although the remixes are not necessary, it is a great addition to the CD. The CD is definitely a classic. Buy it now!!!

5 out of 5 stars Their Most Remarkable Album to Date !.......2002-07-01

What a disappointment back in '89 when I first purchased the original cd to find that their biggest hit Back To Life was only an accapella version. You could only obtain the orchestrated video version if you purchased the maxi single cd or the single cassette ! Well, this club edition of the cd more than makes up for lost time. It makes me greatly appreciate what groundbreaking club, dub, and soulfully deep-bass music sounds like. This title is still fresh and unforgettable as the first time I heard it. With it's Jamaican, reggae-influenced grooves Soul II Soul was definitely a musical group that would later be greatly emulated or imitated by others (listen to the European group Enigma's smash 1990 instrumental hit Sadeness)! From the heartfelt and soulful vocals to the rich instrumentation this cd was the blueprint for later artists to be inspired by if not strongly influenced...

5 out of 5 stars Good II Better.......2002-06-25

Ten years after its release, the fabulous debut from inflential Soul II Soul gets re-relased with three additional mixes. A fuse of r&b, reggae, African rhythms, and pure funk, Jazzie B's unique sound would be copied by several pale imitators. Yet, there was no denying the Real Thing. "Keep On Movin'," "Jazzie's Groove," and "Back to Life" sound just as vital as they did back in 1989. This album deservedly went platinum and earned them a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist (which they lost to, um, Milli Vanilli). However, the group began to sell less records with each subsequent release before they finally faded from the spotlight. But the power and influence of this straight-up classic still lives on. This disc comes highly recommended for both casual listeners and soul fanatics alike.

5 out of 5 stars A Sure "Soul" Delight.......2002-02-11

It's hard to believe that after 13 years of its release, Soul II Soul's "Keep On Movin'" still stands as being one of the best recorded albums ever. Another one of U.K.'s finest brilliantly created a distinct sound in fusing melodic rhythms of Funk, R&B/Soul, Hip-Hop, and Dance. As a result, some of the biggest hits became staples on both R&B and Pop stations during '89 such as the infamous title track and the monstrous classic "Back to Life," both led by female vocalist extrodinaire Caron Wheeler. Another jam is the thunderous "Jazzie's Groove." Bonus treats are also added here for pure listening enjoyment. A sure gem to own.

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars Great, definitely go with this and TAC.......2005-08-31

Right now, there are four official English-language versions of Les Miserables: the Original London Cast Recording, the Original Broadway Cast Recording, the Complete Symphonic Recording, and the 10th Anniversary Concert Recording. Les Mis' addicts are best served by purchasing all recordings, as they showcase different stages (as in the OLC and the OBC) of the development of this mega-musical, as well as the interesting variations in presentation and performances by the different casts and orchestras.

If you're the average musical-theater listener who can't afford to buy all available English-language recordings, however, my advice would be to get the CSR (due to the fact that it's "complete") and the TAC recording (due to the fact that performer- and performance-wise, it's leaps and bounds better than all of the other recordings). You deserve no less.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2005-07-03

I can't believe all the negative comments about Gary Morris. He is so much better in the role than Colm Wilkinson. I've seen Gary perform the part three times and there is NO better Jean ValJean (seen the play 14 times). It's an international cast and some of the accents do take time getting used to. But the power of the music supercedes it all. Listen with your heart people. It's so incredible.

3 out of 5 stars Bought it used - thank God!.......2005-06-17

"Les Miserables" is a marvelous musical; a stunningly faithful interpretation of Victor Hugo's masterpiece, with an inspiring storyline and unforgettable characters. There are 2 reasons for buying a Les Mis CD - (1) you've seen a performance and want ONE CD to remind you of it or (2) you've become a les Mis junkie (like me) and want multiple versions so you too can hold forth on the rival merits of Andy Warlow vs Michael Maguire, Patty LuPone vs Ruthie Henshaw, Frances Ruffelle vs Kaho Shimada vs Lea Solonga. If you are in the first category, you really want the Tenth Anniversary Concert. The TAC has the complete storyline (albeit slightly abridged), it was recorded live (so there's an unique intensity and chemistry between performers), and from top to bottom it has by far the best cast.

However, if you're a serious Les Mis fan, you should buy this CD (in addition), simply because it does have the complete score. (The trouble with THAT is that it includes practically the only misstep in the whole script - if Jean Valjean has his number branded on his chest, then how is it credible that someone else will be convicted in his place?) I bought it for that reason and to hear other interpretations of the roles (in particular Andy Warlow's). I have all 4 versions, and they have all have their pluses and minuses, but frankly, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for this one. This version has a rather weak cast in general, but that does add to the fun arguing about it. On the plus side, it has Philip Quast ( THE BEST Javert, but he's even better on the TAC), Michael Ball (THE BEST Marius, also on the OLC and TAC versions), and Andy Warlow (a stirring Enjorlas for sure, but not THAT much better than Michael Maguire on the OBC and TAC). The scenes at the barricade are the best part of the CD. Kaho Shimada is an uneven Eponine, OK sometimes, less so at others. Debbie Byrne (Fantine) is OK, but I don't find her as moving as Patty LuPone (OLC) or Ruthie Henshaw (TAC). Tracy Shayne (Cosette) is irratating, not nearly as sweet as Judy Kuhn (OLB and TAC) or even Rebecca Caine (OLC). I find Barry James and especially Gay Soper (M. and Mme. Thenardier) grating as well.

I really miss Colm Wilkinson (OLC, OBC and TAC). OK, he has a unique singing style, but such heart. Not always perfect, but so powerful and emotional. All his solos and "Confrontation" just stop me dead in my tracks. The sweetness and purity of his "Bring Him Home" and "Epilogue" move me to tears. But really, there must be someone else who can do at least an adequate job or the show wouldn't have run so long in so many venues. I am willing to listen to another interpretation, but not this one. This is the central role in the play, it really can't survive without a good performance here. Gary Morris is horrible as Jean Valjean, cringe-provoking at times, merely weak at others. He's totally overmatched by Quast in "Confrontation" and by everyone in "One Day More" and "Epilogue". I haven't tried the recommendation of one reviewer of listening while squinting and shaking my head hard, but I don't see how that will help. Morris's "What have I done?", "Bring Him Home" and "Valjean's Confession" make me cover my ears or send me running for the fast forward button, although "Who am I?" isn't so bad. (I just tried the head shaking trick, it didn't help.)

5 out of 5 stars magnificent!.......2005-06-15

Ok, I admit it. I have long been a fan of musicals, but I was only exposed to Les Mis a few months ago. My roommate loaned me this recording, and I fell in love. I played nothing but this soundtrack for the next several weeks.

As this is the only recording I've heard fully, I cannot give any comparisons between the performers here and those on other versions, but I do wish to give my general impression of the cast.

*Gary Morris (Valjean) - he has a strong, clear voice with which it is hard to find fault. He sings with emotion and passion, and I cannot imagine ever tiring of hearing him as Jean Valjean. If I had to give a complaint, it would be that I could imagine a voice with a little more distinct character...something a little riskier for the part of someone so complex.

*Philip Quast (Javert) - wow, I love deep voices, and his is so rich! I love when he hits the low note near the beginning of "Confrontation" ...I've seriously replayed that part over and over again just because it sends shivers through me...haha, I think you get the idea. This guy is good.

*Debbie Byrne (Fantine) - her voice took some getting used to because at first it seemed to me a little uncontrolled, almost like she could capture the fullness of the sound but not quite hit the notes. However, the more I listen to her, the more I enjoy her. Her voice has a wonderful texture, something you totally miss when listening to the super-clear, trilling sopranos that seem to be found all over most other musicals.

*Kaho Shimada (Eponine) - her voice took a little getting used to as well. I was a little confused until I realized she was Japanese, for though I wouldn't say you hear an accent, her voice does have a very different quality to it. Still, I enjoyed her performance very much. Her voice is trembling with emotion the entire time, almost like she can hardly control it...it is quite moving.

*Tracy Shayne (Cosette) - wow. I'm sorry, is Cosette supposed to be this shrill? Turn it off! While I'm impressed at some of the notes she hits, I don't think it's supposed to make you want to cover your ears.

*Michael Ball (Marius) -Ball makes Marius, a rather annoying character if you ask me, into someone actually likable, if not lovable. He's passionate and romantic, but not vapid. Probably my favorite vocal performance.

*Gay Soper and Barry James (the Thernardiers) - their voices are rather grating, but that's the point, right? Very entertaining performances...particularly in "Master of the House" (which, it's true, somehow manages to be stuck in your head all day).

*Anthony Warlow (Enjorolas) - very appropriate voice...manly and vibrant. If he doesn't make you want to go out and fight, then there's no help for you!

Overall, the performances were wonderful. I highly recommend this CD. A great recording of a great musical!

4 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-20

I bought this recently, and it was an object lesson in why I ought to research an item before purchasing it.

For me, it's truly a toss-up as to whether this is a recording worth purchasing. The main benefit-a far from insignificant one-is that it is a complete recording full of much more materiel than can be found on the London or Broadway cast recordings. Basically, I was far from satisfied. The liner notes are error ridden, and the casting was not as good as possible. Gary Morris struck me as too young for the part, and Gay Soper (Mme. Thenardier) has a voice akin to the sound of fingernails on a chalkboard. But, in the absence of a complete Broadway recording, this still may be the best version available to buy. Be sure, however, to supplement it with another version. (The Tenth Anniversary recording might be the best.)

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2007-02-07

I though I owned all the Halloween music to be found. But this one has some new ones and old ones done differently. I highly recommend it.

2 out of 5 stars Good memories spoilt.......2006-12-27

The title of the CD is "Scary" but don't be fooled. The only thing frightening is that someone might be suckered by the reputation of the conductor and some fond childhood memories into spending good money for this crud.

While there are a couple of admirable tributes to classic horror theme songs, the cheesy vocals on Addams Family, Ghostbusters, Monster Mash, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Beware of the Blob and Thriller relegate this disc to the trash bin.

Instead of this, I'd recommend Nosferatu (James Bernard), Chiller (Cincinnati Pops), Fantastic Journey (Cincinnati Pops, also - more SciFi than horror, though) and Classics From the Crypt (RCA Victor). All available here.

4 out of 5 stars Superbly Bizarre.......2005-03-03

All I can say is wow- kitschy and delightful in a way. Though the "Thriller" is disturbing. But how can you deny the "Killer Tomatoes"? I mean, how can you??

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fantastic collection of rare tracks.......2007-04-07

''Super Predators'' is just superb with this sample of ''metal poscard'' of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Actually, super predators appeared in 1997 on the jackal movie soundtrack. I just simply love it, it's toxic.

The remixes will give you minutes of heady pleasure, especially the ones from 'mezzanine'.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any massive attack fan.......2003-03-24

This box set contains all of the remixes of massive attacks singles. If you are a hardcore fan -- you must buy this. My favorite single is the Unfinished Sympathy single.

4 out of 5 stars Complete & Enthralling!.......2002-12-11

This box set is, for lack of a better word, massive. All 11 Massive Attack singles from "Blue Lines", "Protection" and "Mezzanine" are collected here, complete with B-sides and a host of remixes. A quick breakdown of why this is a worthy addition to any MA fan's record collection.

Outstanding Remixes
1. Daydreaming (Luv It Mix)
2. Daydreaming (Brixton Bass Mix)
3. Safe From Harm (Perfecto Mix)
4. Protection (Underdog's Angel Dust Mix)
5. Karmacoma (Portishead Experience)
6. Karmacoma (Napoli Trip)
7. Risingson (Underworld Mix)
8. Teardrop (Scream Team Remix)
9. Inertia Creeps (Manic Street Preachers Version)
10. Back/She Comes (Mad Professor)

Premium B-Sides

2. Home of the Whale
3. Superpredators

Excellent Overall Singles
1. Daydreaming
2. Safe From Harm
3. Hymn of the Big Wheel
4. Teardrop
5. Inertia Creeps

Hidden Treasures
1. Any Love (Larry Heard Remix)
2. Be Thankful For What You've Got (Perfecto Mix)

The heat-sensitive packaging is excellent, and the only misfire I can think of is the Blur remix of Angel. An excellent representation of the evolution of MA, this collection is a treat for diehards and casual fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars You aren't a fan of MA unless you own this..........2001-10-17

I own the 3 albums of Massive Attack but I can't get enough from them 'cause I love their music too much. I just want more and I won't consider money or anything and I'd buy any product (cds, posters or whatever) related to MA..... and this Singles Boxset is like the ID for a real MA fan. You may not love all the remixes but it definitely worths the price 'cause you own the singles, you own the boxset, you own MA, you are a real MA fan!

5 out of 5 stars expect nothing but the best from Massive Attack.......2000-11-14

Ah . . .I picked this boxed set up a few days ago and let me tell you, as a fairly new massive Attack fan ( Just discovered them after the release of 'Mezzanine') this singles collection is just too good for words. Well, the b-sides from Mezzanine (SuperPredators, Reflection, and Euro Zero Zero) are just awesome, I wonder why they're not on the album? Reflection is my favorite, a little faster than the songs on Mezzanine, SuperPredators is very eerrie, I love it! It's an instrumental track that is great for night driving while having a cigarette through the cemetery or something. Euro Zero Zero is the weakest of the three b-sides, but it's still good, I think it's actually a rendition of Euro-Child from 'Protection'. If you're only buying this boxed set for the Mezzanine singles, you're in for a surprise, the GORGEOUS remixes to safe from harm and Unfinished Sympathy make this boxed set worth the cost. Safe From Harm's 7" remix is so much more dramatic, darker and just Perfect, much better than the album version. I could never figure out why everyone likes Unifished Sympathy so much, on the Blue Lines album, I think Daydreaming or Safe From Harm are much better, but when you hear the Nellee Hooper 12" mix, you'll fall in love, next to safe from harm and Teardrop, Unfinished Sympathy's remixes are the loveliest songs Massive Attack has ever done. I used to think Shara Nelson's vocals were annoying on Unfinished Sympathy, but I can't stop listening to Nellee Hooper's superb remixing now. I love Tracey Thorn's vocals on Protection, but the remixes don't do anything for me. Cocteau Twin's Elizabeth Fraser does a breathtaking job on Teardrop and the Mad Professor's remix is awesome.

4 out of 5 stars Love House Music From the Early 90s!.......2000-08-04

This CD is great if you, like me, love house music from the early 90s. It includes some popular tracks that were once played on the radio, such as Dangerous on the Dance Floor by Musto & Bones. I was so excited to find this song on this CD because I couldn't find it anywhere else. The CD also contains popular tracks from DJ mixes. For me, it just brought back memories from the early 90s when all I did was listen to House music. It is a great buy!

Nothing spectacularly new or different - just a solid collection of vocal & pop trance tracks. Nothing that will make you run to the DJ and ask 'what was that?' but it's all solid and professional.
