5 out of 5 stars Long Time Looking - Awesome.......2007-01-10

I had been looling for the Climax Blues Band on CD for a long time, having had them in every other format (including 8 track). Finding this compilation showed the evolution from their blues roots to the pop/rock format of the early '80s. I think they were terrfic in everything they did.

5 out of 5 stars Climax Blues Band - bringing back memories.......2007-01-10

This is a great album for those of us who grew up in the 70's - takes you back to a much simpler time.

4 out of 5 stars Teach Your Children (to learn their bands!).......2006-10-22

In 1975 I was at a friend's house when he played an import album on the Harvest label called Climax Chicago/Tightly Knit. I was immediately hooked and that album remains one of the top five of my all time fav's. That album and the follow up F.M Live showcase on of the best muti-instrumentalist Blues bands of all time period! Listen to Derick Holt's slide solo piece "County hat" on the Live album and it's clear your hearing one of the best (and definitely the most overlooked)slide guitarist to ever wear the bottle . When I read reviews where people base their opinion of this band on the throw away "money grab" song I Love You it makes me want to stick my head in an oven! This song is Air Supply-ish gooey crapola that doesn't deserve to be mentioned in a serious discussion of this band and was probably written to pay off some lawyer or something! There's a reason you don't hear Paul McCartney playing Yesterday live anymore people! File that stuff under Mr.Phyliss's Chic Flick compilations and let's move on! Disco and apparently corporate greed killed this band with Gold Plated being their true swan song. Buy Tightly Knit, A lot of Bottle, F.M Live and this collection IN THAT ORDER! I promise you will be a better educated and much happier consumer (and fan!)

3 out of 5 stars Good quality sound, but not up to par.......2006-06-21

Let me start by saying I'm not an avid fan of Climax, or the Climax Blues Band. But I really enjoyed a few of their songs. Unfortunately, this was the only CD (set) that had one of those songs. I figured, what the heck, I'll see if I like anything else they've done. I did! Unfortunately, all you get is 2 CD's. No inserts. No background on the band. Nothing. Just 2 CD's. For what you have to pay for these 2 CD's, I really thought there'd be more. Just a little disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars passe.......2005-11-06

The album is the same old same old. Generic blues from a group that should not be generic.Buy at your own risk. There are many more new artists out there that your dollar will be well spent.

Rounder compiled this superb 50-song set to serve as an introduction to bluegrass in general and to their own catalog in particular. Obvious marketing motives aside, the collection has few weaknesses and offers a broad look at the ever-morphing genre. Perhaps more than any other label, Rounder gave exposure to the renegade progressive and "newgrass" musicians who worshipped the style despite the fact that they weren't from the mountains. Folks like David Grisman, Bill Keith, Tony Trischka, and Bela Fleck push the music in new directions while others such as Del McCoury, Don Stover, James King, Jim & Jesse, and Vern Williams represent more-traditional concerns. Still others--Tony Rice, David Grier, J.D. Crowe, Nashville Bluegrass Band among them--adeptly fuse elements of tradition and innovation. This collection also highlights the important contributions of female artists including Hazel and Alice, Laurie Lewis, Claire Lynch, and Alison Krauss. --Marc Greilsamer

There was some good music on these two CD's but I would NOT go out of my way to buy this one.

Windham Hill initially gained a sterling reputation through exquisitely recorded and played instrumental guitar albums. The label now commemorates 25 years of recording by picking the cream of its crop. A great harvest it is, too! Founder Will Ackerman rerecords the early "The Impeding Death of the Virgin Spirit." Then there's Alex De Grassi's gentle pyrotechnics and Doyle Dykes's jazzy inflections. Together, they've truly expanded the boundaries of acoustic-guitar playing--an effort that may have reached its zenith with the late Michael Hedges. His "Aerial Boundaries" remains a tour de force, while his live duet with bassist Michael Manring--"Rikki's Shuffle"--shows the synergy between two great musicians. --Chris Nickson

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music.......2007-01-16

Windham Hill is always great and this cd is right in that tradition

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, calming, romantic..........2007-01-10

I have never purchased a Windham Hill CD that I have not enjoyed and this one may be the best of them all. It is beautiful and, at times, hauntingly so. I took a deep breath at the first note of the first song and I don't remember breathing after that. I highly reccommend this CD for anyone who loves acoustic guitar or for someone who just needs a moment to relax.

5 out of 5 stars Masterfull & Wonderful!.......2002-10-16

This album has quickly become one of my favorite instrumental albums. Long a fan of the Windham-Hill label, I'm of the opinion that this compilation offers some of the best guitar music around. This CD is masterful and richly rewarding. It contains some of the most soothing instrumental music recorded, and as one other reviewer aptly put it, it's a great stress reducer. The cuts from the masters Ackerman, deGrassi and Hedges are wonderful as any WH fan over the years has come to appreciate them. My favorite selection is however, Snuffy Walden's "Who Lives Up There". In my opinion it is just the most beautifully written and performed piece of acoustic guitar music period. It is such a technically wonderful recording as well. This cut is worth the price of the CD alone. Another favorite is David Culen's "On the Way". I am not as familiar with his work but I plan to check out other Cullen offerings soon. There is not a misstep on this entire hour-long CD. And to think I almost hesitated buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Guaranteed to relax you!.......2002-07-24

This is THE most relaxing, beautiful CD I've purchased in years. It should have STRESS-BUSTER written across the cover. Three minutes after I hit the "Play" button, I'm off in another realm altogether. If you love acoustic guitar music, you'll treasure this awesome CD.

5 out of 5 stars A generous helping of each artist.......2002-06-26

This is a great commemorative album made up of the music that established Windham Hill. Thankfully, the principal artists are represented by two cuts apiece, making this CD more of a showcase than a sampler. Snuffy Walden got shorted with just his "Who Lives Up There?", but we have Michael Hedges opening the set with "Aerial Boundaries" and ending it with a duet with bassist Michael Manning, "Rikki's Shuffle".

Alex De Grassi then has the #2 and the next-to-last positions. Rather an interesting pattern is established, using those two noteworthy members of the Windham Hill family.

Will Ackerman is quite well represented with "The Impending Death of the Virgin Spirit" on the third cut, and "Sheila's Pictures" on the ninth cut.

In my most humble opinion, these seven of the twelve are the very richest cream of the crop while the other five are scarcely a step less enjoyable. This is definitely the Windham Hill style of guitar music and therefore will seem rather mild and bland to those with desensitized ears, but those who can enjoy the depths of really good and well-performed music will indeed be well rewarded by listening to this.

Another installment of the Cult Show That Will Not Die, the 25th anniversary edition of the Rocky Horror soundtrack has, of course, the kinds of things one would expect of an anniversarial edition. These include previously unreleased tracks and a CD booklet that attempts to explain the inexplicable: how character actor Richard O'Brien's little slice of weirdness became such a hit that, a quarter of a century later, it's a Broadway production once again. Even today, there are people out there being, well, exposed to the phenomenon that is Rocky Horror for the first time, and the reaction is always the same: either utter enchantment or utter mystification. There's no denying that the show has a certain appeal. Creator O'Brien has called it "something any 10-year-old can enjoy," and maybe that's the secret: something about Rocky Horror's barely controlled insanity connects with our inner children. Maybe it's Tim Curry's magnetic performance. Maybe it's the music. Maybe it's '70s nostalgia. Whatever the reason, Rocky Horror has proved that one need not be mainstream to become an icon of popular culture. While the images and ideas contained therein might hardly turn a head today, there's nothing else like it that's quite as much fun. --Genevieve Williams

3 out of 5 stars Close, but not quite there........2007-03-28

This album is so close to being a worthwhile release.
I don't regret buying it, because my copy of the soundtrack was the older release on tape.
I'm very happy to have the otherwise unreleased songs on this album. The sound quality is good, but not especially noteworthy.

But the dialogue clips are insufferable. A soundtrack album is supposed to be the music, not an "album of the movie." These clips drastically decrease the likability of this recording - that and the missing end of Planet Shmanet.

There's also the plus that those silly remixes of the Time Warp are absent. And splitting up the Floor Show music sequence is a real plus.

1 out of 5 stars PAGES WERE WATER STAINED AND WAVY.......2007-01-30

I WAS EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED IN THE QUALITY OF THE BOOK OF MUSIC I RECEIVED. THE PAGES HAD OBVIOUSLY GOTTEN WET AND DRIED, SO THE BOOK WAS ALL OUT OF SHAPE. WHEN TRYING TO COPY IT TO MAKE AN EXTRA ONE FOR MY ACCOMPANIST, IT CONSTANTLY GOT STUCK IN THE MACHINE AND IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET THE COPYING DONE. THIS BOOK WAS IN TERRIBLE SHAPE AND I WASTED A LOT OF MONEY TRYING TO COPY IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I WILL NEVER NEVER BUY A USED COPY AGAIN AS A RESULT. I LEARNED MY LESSON, BUT THE SELLER OF THE BOOK SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES FOR MISREPRESENTATION.!!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars ALMOST Complete.......2006-10-28

I am glad this came out but wish that the 1 minute missing of Time warp was in here and the You're a hot dog part of Planet Schmanet Janet.

KUDOS: For including Planet Schmanet Janet (albeit in edited form) I love the beat on it and love the part where Riff Raff and Magenta are laughing and he tells her to shut up.

I think the reason I like the movie (Which I consider more of a Rock Opera than a musical) is the music. Although some of it is better with the pictures it goes to, The songs are great for random singing. Whoever the session drummer was on this was really good as well. Nice fills. I actually enjoy the movie and dislike going to the theater to see it.

Unless you want an idiotic remix of Time Warp, this is the definitive (for now) version to get. We complain but come on, you don't think at some point they won't do another anniversary edition?

Mr. O'Brien, if you read these sites, I heard you wanted to do a sequel, PLEASE DO! just give us more groovy music, be in it and bring back some of the characters from the first one and I'll see it!

3 out of 5 stars havent got it yet.......2005-10-20

looks like a great cd i have another rhps but doesnt have a few of the songs nor does it have a booklet to go wtih it.

as for the people who dont know where the song super heoreos goes is when the castle takes off and u see them on the ground. The crim.s line and "crawling on the planets face some insects called the human race lost in time lost in space" is the last verse. (yes the line was off the top of my head i've wtched a few times too many)

the once in a while song i havent figured oput yet where that goes.

4 out of 5 stars Fond Memories.......2005-08-04

This CD is great. It includes more than just the music from the movie. It has some of the dialogue as well. It also includes a song that was not in the actual motion picture, but it is a nice addition. Anyone wanting to be able to remember going to this midnight movie would truly enjoy owning this CD.

This tribute disc to the 25-year piano legacy of Windham Hill was assembled during a time of administrative reorganization for the label, which may explain why a showcase for such an influential catalog of music has been compressed into a single 54-minute disc. Such relative brevity does not negatively impact its quality or appeal, though label founder Will Ackerman, who sold the label in the 1990s, penned the liner notes and apparently chose the tracks. Label legends George Winston, Jim Brickman, and Liz Story are each represented by two tracks, though nothing from Winston's genre-defining Autumn release is found here. However, Story's superb Solid Colors ("Wedding Rain") is represented, a nod to a grand 1982 release that ranks as the label's finest moment. Among the less familiar names here (five tracks are lifted from past new-artist samplers), Richard Dworsky ("A Morning with the Roses") and soulful 16-year-old Taylor Eigsti ("Past Voices") merit special notice. Back in the early 1970s, every Windham Hill recording merited special notice. Each new release was a revelation to rock- and pop-rooted listeners, presenting a startling mix of new-acoustic purity, intelligence, and emotional expansiveness. Here's hoping the next 25 years generate some similar sparks. --Terry Wood

5 out of 5 stars Terrific painting music!.......2006-11-17

Just the kind of sound and background music one needs for creating and relaxing.Best quality for listening for any artist as they prepare to create!!Lovely and continously enjoyable throughout the whole cd.

5 out of 5 stars AAAHHHH, how sweet it is............2003-04-20

For a long time, Windham Hill has been putting out magnificent piano music. It comes as no surprise, therefore, that this collection highlighting some of the label's most distinguished pieces would be nothing less than perfect. If you like solo piano, then take my word for it: this is a beautiful, captivating album.

Each track is a finely-crafted original work and represents a significant piece of Windham Hill's legacy of piano music. This soothing collection of tunes is splendidly suited for a romantic evening by the fire, a morning stroll in the park, or an afternoon of lazy daydreaming. Whatever your condition, Windows is guaranteed to uplift your spirits and rejuvenate your soul. The album is that good. I recommend it without reservation to anyone who relishes the sweet sound of solo piano.

5 out of 5 stars Showcase for Windham Hill's Finest.......2003-04-19

As part of Windham Hill's 25 Year anniversary celebrations, this CD has been released in recognition of the prominent part pianists have played in the company's success over the last quarter of a century.

How they can do this in a single 53 minute disc is beyond me- the company has distributed some amazing piano music that is surely worthy of a longer compilation. However, to their credit, what they have chosen is of the highest order.

The CD features many well-known pianists and some not so familiar, but each track is strong in its own individual way. It even features a 16 year old's debut piece, "Past Voices".

Oystein Sevag's "Children's Song" holds some curious addiction to me; a very simple melody that you can't help but listen intently to.

Michael Harrison's "In Flight" perfectly captures the subject of the title- I see birds migrating as I fly along side them on their beautiful long journey.

"Rocket to the Moon" had to be included. It was the piece that launched Jim Brickman's career and will be instantly recognisable to many.

Another favourite is "To The Well" by Walter Mathieu. On this piece, Mathieu is accompanied by vocalist Bobby McFerrin. The founder of the company, Will Ackerman, states in the insert that this is one of the most beautiful pieces of music he has heard- and I would agree. It is one of those examples of music that you'll either love or hate; for me it is definitely the former. I tend to find that voice and piano does neither any favours; one gets in the way of the other and you end up not being able to concentrate on either. This is a rare example of when this doesn't happen. Instead, they complement one another, mainly because the piano is still the prominent sound and the vocals are wordless. They add a haunting, yet strangely beautiful quality to the music.

Beautifully presented, this CD is a must if you are a piano lover. Congratulations, Windham Hill, and here's to another 25 years of creating some of the best instrumental music around.

Very highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2001-11-09

I have no idea why the last two reviews for this CD are so bad. This might be the best CD I ever listened to!

3 out of 5 stars The music is very nice but this compilation is weird.......2001-11-06

I always thought that the best way to listen to new age is in compilations. With very few exceptions (like George Winston) this kind of music becomes monotonous and boring after twenty minutes with the same artist. So, I have most of the windham hill compilations, piano, guitars, samplers, vocals, and I like them all. Since piano is one of my favourite instruments I bought this one without hesitation.

What a surprise it was to find that 5 out of these 13 tracks are taken from other samplers by the same label. I understand that this label is not the same it was 15 years ago, it was bought by BMG and they are really trying to cash on this popular and selling music, but we must say to them that this is too much, just way too much! A sampler from samplers, and at full price!

The music is good and if you don't have any windham hill cd, you could start here, although George Winston has some better tracks and there are a few more piano tracks in the windham hill vaults that could be added to a CD that is only 53 minutes long. I guess BMG prefers to do a vol.2 than give you value for your money.

I prefer the 'Piano samplers', vol. 1 and 2, with more tracks and more music to this one. And also the "first Ten years" dbl cd compilation is great. Other windham hills compilations that I recommend are the "Winter solstice", specially vol. 1, 2 and 3. There are too many Windham Hill cd's to buy before this one.

Somewhat unfortunately, it's impossible to access Smoosh's arresting debut without taking into account the ages of the group's two members at the time of its release: keyboardist/vocalist Asya is 12 and the drummer is her 10-year-old sister, Chloe. Try to get past the pre-teen status of the duo and listen to She Like Electric on its own terms and you'll encounter a striking collection of 14 playful, adventurous, eclectic indie-pop originals. Recalling everything from Ben Folds to Quasi to a young Joni Mitchell, Asya exhibits talent that's matched by considerable ambition as she glides through songs that draw on pop (the bouncy "It's Not Your Day to Shine), punk ("La Pump"), hip-hop (the truly rad "RAD"), and, honestly, `70s No Wave (the shrill, screeching "Bottlenose"). Strikingly unselfconscious and inventive, and yet oddly mature, She Like Electric delights at every turn. --Steven Stolder

Album Description

Seattle's Smoosh are a sister duo who make exceedingly endearing, piano/synth-based indie pop and have shared the stage with Death Cab for Cutie, The Presidents of the United States of America, Cat Power and Sleater-Kinney. Oh… and they're 10 and 12 years old.

But these self-directed musical prodigies can hold their own against any fully grown bands. ROCKRGRL magazine compared their sound to "a stripped down version of the first side of Pet Sounds." Seattle's The Stranger puts it even more succinctly in saying "Smoosh is awesome." We think you'll agree.

She Like Electric, their debut album, was recorded at the legendary Egg Studios (Posies, Young Fresh Fellows, Presidents of the USA.) in Seattle in a mere three days (with 2 more days for mixing) under the steady hand of engineer/producer Johnny Sangster. And, yes, every note of this album was written and performed by Asya and Chloe with no adult intervention.

The band has already gained a wide following of fans, including Cat Power's Chan Marshall, who has been finishing her shows of late by lip synching to a live version of Smoosh's song "Rad."

From the joyful and contemplative ("To Walk Away From") to the silly and giggly, ("The Quack") to the angry and bittersweet ("But Now I Know"), urgency prevails.

I don't know. They tried...but failed. 'Bottlenose' was just...it actually reminded me of the music they put on those Anime shows. It was crazy...really...the rapping is cheesy...what else? I have to give 'em props for the music they actually play. They are good at that. But otherwise...I just don't know what to say.

2 out of 5 stars Incredible talent that's still developing..........2006-09-14

I have listened to this band only during their interview with Nic Harcourt on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. I just think that it's awesome that some kids with potential and some success don't have huge egos and are still pretty wholesome. I don't think it's appropriate to compare their music to the other indie rock bands out there, being that they're 12 or 13 and they don't have any pedigree or training. The interview says it all. They're just starting out. I look forward to their music five years from now when they've had more experience.

"Free to Stay"
by Smoosh
Barsuk Records
3½ (rounded up to 4)(out of 5) stars

When one looks into the genre of young musical groups, most of what you'll find is fluffy pop fare. Groups from Boyz II Men to Hanson to Britney Spears have become commonplace on today's musical radar. That's one of the things that make Seattle's Smoosh so impressive. They've managed to shed the fluffy pop sound of their contemporaries and do something wholly original. They may be the first mainstream child indie rock band.
Smoosh, a duo featuring thirteen year-old Asya (their parents refuse to give out their last names to try and grant their children and a normal childhood) on keyboards and vocals and her eleven year-old sister Chloe already have a resume that would make the most seasoned musicians blush. They've still got a few more years before they can drive, but they've already opened for Jimmy Eat World, Rilo Kiley, Sleater-Kinney, and spent the last summer touring with the eels. Their newest release, "Free to Stay" has been released on the quickly emerging Barsuk Records (also home to They Might Be Giants, Rilo Kiley and Death Cab for Cutie).
Asya's keyboards roar with a grungy flair closest to fitting a Sleater-Kinney record on the opening track "Find a Way". Songs like this is what makes young teen bands stars. With their big sound and catchy melodies, Smoosh picks up right where they left off from their debut album, 2004's "She Like Electric". Asya's sound is quite overpowering, especially using to two different keyboard effects at once. This creates a beautiful wall of sound behind Smoosh. Smoosh manages to make music that has an eccentric mix of Sarah Sleans, voice, beautiful harmonies, and piano-work, Hanson's incredibly smart, radio-friendly pop, with Le Tigre's grunge-movement rock. The record is never really groundbreaking (especially in lyrical continent), but it's great pop music from a duo with nothing but infinite possibilities of ahead of them.
Drummer Chloe's work, while not being very technical is very clean. She has a lot more control than drummer I've seen that are twice her age. Tracks like "Organ Talk" showcase both the bands humor and their musicianship as we can the start of the band branching off, ever so slowly, into other genres.
The record does have it faults though. "I Would Go" has some blatantly auto-tuned vocals. Asya's voice is still developing and with some more work, she's dto do more with her voice, but she seems a bit bound by her lack of experience. Tracks Clap On", would greatly benefit from Asya throwing in a bit of gravel into her voice. The sloppiness of the record, for the most part, offers irrereplacable charm, but can be a bit too much for musical perfectionists. The lyrical content is also very repititivie, but the fact is, Asya's a better writer than people three times older than her. Once these early emotions, the ones that a there in every teenage child grow up, she'll be better for it and finally read to leave foll
I recommend Free to Stay for any pop junkee. It's a good listen, a good record, and a lot of fun. I've gotten this record many spins before finishing this review and I'm likely to have many more in the near future. Shortcomings notwithstanding, music like this is exactly what the state of modern music needs right now. And just think. Their eight year-old sister just started bass lessons.

5 out of 5 stars Smoosh are Smashing.......2006-07-10

The pure innocence of this project is most appealing. In a day & age when provocative images and negative messages prevail in music, Smoosh are very refreshing. But never mind that, these girls ROCK! Highlights for me are "Pygmy Motorcycle," which demonstrates solid, sophisticated song writing, "Make it Through," a brilliant catchy single, and "The Quack," a playful creative cut that just makes you smile. The entire album shines, but I just decided to highlight a few personal favorites. Smoosh are extremely talented, fun, and passionate. The older you are, the further back they take you to a day when life was more simple and fun. The song writing is even better on the 2nd album, but this is an incredible debut. Good show, girls!

4 out of 5 stars Great job!.......2006-04-19

I found this album to be honest and genuine. Many of the tracks display real budding talent and intellect that is not often seen in 9 and 11 year olds. Other tracks are silly, with screaming and giggling, and there are moments when Asya doesn't sing on-key or mumbles the sometimes-repetative lyrics. MTV material they are not. But one thing I can't call them is bad. For a pair of youngsters who accidentally fell into the music scene with zero formal training, this is a fantastic piece of work. No, the songs on this album won't be winning any awards, but compare them to your average teen/pre-teen pop singer, and Smoosh is a refreshing breeze. If you're looking for manufactured-sounding music, digitally enhanced vocals, and generic love songs, look elsewhere, because what you're going to get with "She Like Electric" is two girls having a lot of fun.

Since releasing this album, the girls have grown up a bit, and their musical skills have improved vastly. Catch them live, or find some footage of them live on Google video or YouTube. "Sucks"? "No talent"? I think not.

Great job, girls; eagerly awaiting your next album!

5 out of 5 stars Review of the Complete Box Set (4 CDs).......2007-01-11

I really love this collection. It's not a greatest hits collection, although a good effort was made to select the best material. It is an anthology, giving an overview of many of the personalities, musical styles, and high-points of this incredibly durable band. The tracks are not organized chronologically. I really like this feature: I think significant effort was put into the choice and the order of the material; and it flows nicely.

Four discs, 72 tracks, including 4 new songs, 5 unreleased songs, 2 live and unreleased songs, and 9 alternative mix songs, so 28% of the total is not what was on the released albums and singles. And the alternative material sounds great. (I don't have the remastered Fleetwood Mac and Rumours albums (yet), so some of this might be redundant.) My favorite FM album is Tusk; but I also like Rumours, Fleetwood Mac, the Bob Welch records, and much of the Peter Green phase. (I think the Burnette/Vito period is the least interesting.)

The first disk is dominated by Mirage, Tango in the Night, and Behind the Mask material. Disc 2 is dominated by Rumours, Mirage, and Tusk material. Disc 3 is dominated by Tusk and Fleetwood Mac (white album) material with some Bob Welch era. Disc 4 is dominated by Peter Green era and Bob Welch era material. I think the Bob Welch material gets short shrift, as well as Tusk. The set was released during the Burnette/Vito period and that's reflected in (in my opinion) an unrepresentative helping of that material. The thing that amazes me is how good it all sounds. Mick and John are just rocks (pun intended) behind whoever is out front. The breadth and depth of the material is amazing. Some complain about too much emphasis on the Buckingham/Nicks period. It's not possible to do otherwise. Although the Peter Green era produced more albums (7 vs. 6), the bands success, financially and (in my opinion) creatively, peaked in the Rumours/Tusk period. It's also the most long-lived lineup. What else is to be expected with 3 songwriters of the stature of Buckingham, Nicks, and McVie?

It's a bit hard to find (long out of print) but I located a like-new copy (perfect for a except cutout slice) on ebay express for $38. Well worth the effort and the money. It appears to still be in print in the UK. Check Amazon UK for a listing. It's fairly expensive, and shipping will be as well. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but a wasted opportunity (this review is of the full four disc boxed set).......2006-10-25

A lavish 4-disc boxed set that covers the band's entire first 25 years, including some rarities, a few previously unreleased tracks, four new songs, and a whole lot of big hits. All of the band's post-1975 hits are present here, except for the inexplicable exclusions of the hits "Hold Me" and "Seven Wonders" - the omissions of which are inexcusable for a thorough boxed set. An error was also made by attempting to incorporate the band's early years into the mix, which does not set well with the Buckingham/Nicks years of the band. The group's pre-1975 material is largely squeezed onto one disc, is hardly complete, and deserved to anthologized separately and better.

Having gotten those determinants out of the way, THE CHAIN still has a good amount to offer. There are four new songs, including Stevie Nicks' plodding and unfocused "Paper Doll" and two pleasant mid-tempo tunes from Christine McVie ("Love Shines," "Heart of Stone"). None of these three new songs are particularly memorable, but are somewhat significant in the sense that they are the final records by the BEHIND THE MASK lineup of the band, as both Nicks and Rick Vito abandoned ship in 1993. Lindsey Buckingham's sole new contribution, the haunting "Make Me a Mask," was probably an out-take from his 1992 solo album OUT OF THE CRADLE, but that's not a complaint as the neo-lullaby is easily the best of the new material.

The set also includes some B-sides and previously unreleased material, although I'm sure there's even more great material lurking the vaults somewhere. I was a bit disappointed that "Cool Water" (the B-side to 1982's "Gypsy") and "You and I, part I" (the B-side to 1987's "Big Love") were not included, but it was great to finally have a legitimate copy of the gorgeous "Sliver Springs" (the B-side to "Go Your Own Way") on CD. The highpoint of the previously unreleased material are two 1982 Lindsey Buckingham compositions, both left off of the album MIRAGE. The mid-tempo ballad "Goodbye Angel" is a beautiful fifties' homage, while the madcap "Teen Beat" is a wild instrumental (with some non-syllabic vocal ad libs thrown in) in the same vein as "Tusk." It is total mystery why these two tracks failed to make the cut the first time around.

There are also many terrific album tracks selected (which isn't that big of deal seeing that the band's entire discography is available on CD), and I was particularly pleased with the large amount of material from 1979's underrated masterpiece TUSK. The many tracks that are listed as "alternate mixes" are very misleading, however, as most sound identical to the original versions. The big exception here is the unedited version of "Gypsy," which has a has longer fadeout featuring more delightful interaction between Stevie and Lindsey and actually improves upon the classic original. Nicks' fans will also be delighted by the 1988 live version of her 1983 solo hit "Stand Back," which strips away the disco arrangement of the original and is performed as a straight ahead rock song.

Overall, THE CHAIN features enough fresh and interesting material to be a worthy buy for fans, but it is still somewhat of a wasted opportunity. The compilers obviously tried to cram in all of the many variations of this constantly evolving band into one package, and the results are simply not completely pleasing. This, the missing hits, the minimum of previously unreleased material, and the ho-hum new songs prevent the package from really hitting the bull's-eye. It may not be the definitive Fleetwood Mac collection that many were hoping for, but it certainly does have it's charms.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Box Set - The Chain.......2004-01-24

First off, I don't know why the box set is out of print. It's a crime IMO. So, since there is no box set, I will review it anyways under this title.

Basically this CD is a condensed version of the out of print box set- a sampler if you will. It is worth noting that this set includes a track not on the out of print box set - Bermuda Triangle (which orignally was from Heroes Are Hard To Find).

Now, as a box set, this is pretty good. It has tracks from all eras/line-ups of Fleetwood Mac represented up to that point (1992). It does include 1 b-side "Silver Springs" (which is also now available on The Very Best of FM), as well as a few unreleased gems from the Mirage period, a Danny Kirwin track titled Trinity, as well as a track from the proposed Jeremy Spencer EP called String-A-Long.

Also included are a few live tracks taken from FM Live '80 and other sources.

As far as "easily obtainable" material, the set does a good job at covering the band's most popular songs, although it would have been nice to see "Hold Me" and "Seven Wonders" on here as well.

The older material (aka Peter Green era) is concentrated on the 4th disc. They do a good job covering the basics of what the original FM sound was with most of the big songs by them during that period (Black Magic Woman, Albatross, Need Your Love So Bad, I Believe My Time Ain't Long (Dust My Broom), Oh Well, Rattlesnake Shake, etc). I do think that their "middle period songs" feel a little out of place on this disc, as well as the Hypmotized and Lay It All Down on CD 3. I believe they should have added another CD with the "middle period" stuff and add more to CD 4 of Peter Green material (maybe some live gems).

All in all, a very good set, if not for CD 4 alone, as there is not a good "compilation" of older FM material out there that can equal what CD 4 is (there are imports out there though if you look hard).

BUT, with this set being out of print, you'd be better off trying to look in a used CD store or auction site to find it.

In the meantime, enjoy this "sample" disc and relish in some of these great tunes.

5 out of 5 stars Something For Everyone........2001-08-22

If you've followed the various incarnations of Fleetwood Mac over the twenty-five year span this anthology covers and if you have an appreciation for all the genres represented here from Elmore James style guitar rave-ups to ultra-cool LA Pop, then you'll love this two-disc set.

What I find interesting, and other reviewers seem to loathe about this collection, is how it skips from the early Peter Green blues jams to the Bob Welch era pop ballards to the Lindsey Bunkingham light jazz classics and back to the Danny Kirwan / Jeremy Spencer Elvis rockabilly. Throughout all the changes in personel and all the stylistic experimentation, one thing has remained constant....Their rock solid rhythm section. The steady drumming of Mick Fleetwood and the ever so thick bass lines of John McVie have provided FM with the kind of heavy bottom most rock units would kill for.

So wheather your bent is hearing Stevie Nicks belting out Rhinnon, with a smokey rasp as only she can, or if your preference his hearing Peter Green's wailing guitar on his orginal version of Black Magic Woman, Green Manalishi or his Santo and Johnny sound-alike, Albatross...Then again you may prefer Lindsey Buckingham's vocal pyrotechnics on Big Love or maybe Christine McVie's classic Don't Stop is right for you, (it seemed to serve well for Bill Clinton's re-election campaign). Either way there's something for just about everyone in this interesting 25 year cross-section.

4 out of 5 stars Okay.......2001-07-07

Well...This item has always been my favorite. But I have one negitave reason, (I'll tell after). I liked Fleetwood Mac from age four. And when I had heard about the boxset, I was thrilled. It had all the music I liked of the new age Mac with Stevie Nicks, (she was always my favorite, with or without Mac.) Anyway, I was reading a review and I said to myself, well maybe, I do have some negitave things to say. When I look at the other albums, "Tango In The Night," and "Tusk," for instance...I look at all the songs from that CD that are not on the boxset. I didn't know all those songs at the time. I mean...there are alot of songs I like...but now when I think of all the other albums, I wish I had them other than this 4 disc set.

The Country Gentlemen saw bluegrass through some sea changes. One of the first groups to include rock and pop elements in their songs, they also deepened the music's appeal to urban coffeehouse and college audiences. The resulting sound remains influential even as their generation has become bluegrass music's elder statesmen. This double-disc retrospective from Rebel Records gives an admirable overview of what made the Gentleman so consistently innovative and exciting throughout their musical chair-lineup changes, which included at one time or another everyone from Charlie Waller, Doyle Lawson, and Bill Emerson to John Duffey, Eddie Adcock, and Ricky Skaggs. Appropriately enough for the first "progressive" bluegrass band, the song selection ranges from rock and folk covers like Bob Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" and CSN's "Teach Your Children" to lonesome bluegrass classics like Ralph Stanley's "The Fields Have Turned Brown."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Solid Introduction to an Amazing Band.......2007-06-04

I first purchased this collection on vinyl shortly after its original release in 1982 after seeing the Country Gentlemen play live at a festival. Over the course of twenty-six songs, the listener is provided with a concise history of this seminal band. However, while the title 25 YEARS implies a complete history, be aware that what you are really getting is a collection of songs recorded for Rebel Records from the mid-sixties through 1980 (although two tracks--"Come & Sit by the River" and "The Likes of You"--are provided by their then current label Sugar Hill.) Because the Country Gentlemen recorded for a variety of labels during their first twenty-five years (Starday, Vanguard, Folkways among them), this collection is not as thorough as it could be.

Despite those limitations, there is some excellent material here, especially the period from 1959 through 1969 when the classic lineup included Charlie Waller on guitar and vocals (the founder and lone constant throughout the entire band's history), John Duffey on mandolin and vocals, Eddie Adcock on banjo, and either Tom Gray or Ed Ferris on bass. Fully half of the tracks (1-12 and 20) feature this configuration of the band. [Note: Duffey and Gray would later team up again in The Seldom Scene in the early seventies.]

For the most part, the Country Gentlemen kept things fairly traditional. Even when they covered more contemporary material (Dylan's "Girl from the North Country," Gordon Lightfoot's "Redwood Hill," Graham Nash's "Teach Your Children"), it really wasn't much of a stretch to treat these songs as bluegrass numbers. It is worth noting, however, that the two Sugar Hill numbers have the Country Gentlemen updating their sound by adding a drummer.

My only complaint is that the Doyle Lawson years (1971 through 1979) are represented by a mere four songs. [That's Lawson singing lead on "Dixieland for Me."] That quibble aside, this is a fine collection and an enjoyable introduction to this amazing band. [Running Time - 72:16] VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Counrty Gentlemen.......2001-03-06

I grew up listening to these songs in Eastern KY. My dad was a banjo player and we spent lots of times at bluegrass festivals and the highlite of any show was the Country Gentlemen! We came to know Charlie Waller and Doyle Lawson on a personal level and these songs bring back so many fond memories. they are a must-have for any fan of bluegrass music. Matterhorn, Teach Your Children and 500 miles were my favorites and no one can sing bluegrass better than Charlie Waller. I learned these songs over 20 years ago and they still have a special place in my heart. If you love bluegrass music you will love these songs! I highly recommend them!

While Volume 2 of Saturday Night Live: The Musical Performances claims to draw on 25 years of history, all but one track is taken from the 1990s. The exception is Neil Young, who performed "No More" all the way back in 1989. A rundown of the rest of the tracks reads like a roster of the 1990s always-on-the-radio club. The delights on this disc are few and far between. Beck's George Harrison impression on "Nobody's Fault But My Own" is a great turn for the man associated with funky stoner grooves, but longtime fans of the show will remember George Harrison dueting with Paul Simon in the late 70s. That moment is neither here nor on Volume 1. If the companion volume strove for a bit of balance between the past and present, Volume 2 is shamelessly tailored for sales, and not as an archive. --Jason Josephes

3 out of 5 stars Attention: Neil Young Freaks.......2005-07-27

Rockin' In The Free World may have been the more incendiary performance but No More is a very, very cool song from the Freedom record that seems to have fallen through the cracks. This is a nifty live version.

I picked this set up used for about 2 bucks, I certainly would not have paid full price but I sure have enjoyed putting this Neil Young song on mix tapes.

1 out of 5 stars YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDIN' ME.......2003-10-08

One of the greatest if not the greatest live performance I've heard or seen is not presented on this CD. That's right the greatest. I don't know or have ever really know anything about Neil Young, but his live performance of ROCKIN'IN THE FREE WORLD on SNL almost put tears to my eyes. Utterly speachless. It was'nt that it was such an emotional performance or anything, but that the fact was that this old fart would have rocked Kurt Cobain's or anyone elses young butt. Trully a powerful and insperational song.

Get the DVD it's the only official release of the song.

4 out of 5 stars A rare set of performances.......2002-09-08

Sorry that the majority of other reviewers focused on what performers were NOT included vs. reviewing the actual merits of this compilation. There are some excellent performances here. Neil Young, Pretenders, Beck, REM and Alanis are superb...all very well recorded. I like the incredible variety-there is no better CD for a long car ride. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Mac Anthology - Sounds Great!.......2007-01-10

Enjoy.

Ideal gift for someone who really loves Fleetwood Mac. This disc set has many of their old and best sellers. I lost my cd box set to my 23 year old son so now i am retrieving the set. This is the first time I have found this set in over 4 years are better.
