    5 out of 5 stars Soothing sounds of Led Zeppelin..........2005-03-01

    Before I write my review, I thought you would like to know that I have not had a chance to listen to "Kashmir: The Symphonic Led Zeppelin". Keep that in mind if you are trying to decide between the two.

    I think I would consider myself an average Led Zeppelin fan. I appreciate their music, and I listen to them every so often. I'm not one of the hardcore Zeppelin fans, so you might not appreciate this tribute as much as I do. I would have to say that this tribute is very well done, and a lot of time and effort was put into making it. The strings are pretty much in sync with the original songs, and just a few seconds into the song, you'll be able to tell what it is. I'm not going to go through a list of songs and tell you what I think of them, but I will say that I think the best one is "Ten Years Gone." This album - or albums, I should say - are great if you're looking for a soothing and relaxing version of some of the great Led Zeppelin songs. Though, I must say that you will only appreciate the tribute if you know the songs themselves, because if you don't then the song just might get repetetive. I'm a fan of the whole String Quartet Tribute thing, and I'd have to say that this is one of the best ones I've heard so far.

    For some reason this CD just sounded really corney to me. I was really dissapointed. Your opinion may differ but I would recommend that if you are looking for a classical Zeppelin CD you get Kashmir instead. It is cheaper and shines a new light on some awsome songs rather than butchering them.

    A few of the selections are questionable for arrangment for a string section. I mean, Whole Lotta Love? Dazed and Confused? Give me a break. They could have replaced those poor choices with a number of other possibilities.

    Nevertheless, it is the first attempt of it's kind, and the songs that are suitable are gorgeously performed.

    Led Zeppelin's gifts for creating melodies and knowledge of music theory become more obvious in these classical performances.

    It's a double CD so it has lots of songs!

      I heard of this band by watching Manhunter, the great 80's film by Michael Mann that is greatly underapreciated. This is the only CD *anywhere* you can find the song Evaporate on. It's on the Manhunter soundtrack, but that's only on tape and record. It's also out of print and it's very hard to find. You can get the soundtrack on EBay, for 30 dollars. Yeah. Hey, i'm desperate. No i didnt buy it.

      This Shriekback cd is great, but i'm also reviewing for the Manhunter soundtrack because it is not sold on here. No one even looks at this page though, so yeah.

      There are more Shriekback compilations floating around than original albums, but here's one actually makes sense. For starters it collects Shriekback's first EP, "Tench" and their first LP, "Care" in their entirity, and adds a lot of material from their early singles as well. I was supprised how dated a few of these songs sound, and how similar to other british bands from the early '80's like Cabaret Voltaire and A Certain Ratio. While all these (and many other bands from this era) combined visceral funk rhythms with icy synths, drum machines and other electronic effects, Shriekback had a decidedly perverse sense of humor and strong, yet understated musicianship. The more accessible songs seem to have been placed on disc one (perfect for your next '80's dance party) and the more esoteric, "experimental" tracks are relegated to disc 2; for late night headphone contemplation. Fans of the group will probably deem this essential because it contains much otherwise out of print material. Casual listeners may want to check out another compilation which focus more on the group's hits.

      What I love about all these "Early Year" albums that it features all of Selena's stuff you rarely hear or people rave about. I love Selena but I get tired of the same songs and albums that seem to have all the same songs but in another order. Ever since her death, it's been a massive amounts of "Greatest Hits" albums. How many do you need?! I think they should either put out more of her older, less heard of stuff or more live albums if they want to keep milking out albums.

      But some of it does sound quite dated and maybe even corney. You probably have to be a true fan to truely appreciate it. So you may not enjoy it as much as her later stuff. I actually like her older stuff better. But if you appreciate the history behind the songs, you will enjoy this album. PLus, its tons easier than trying to hunt down the ACTUAL tapes and records with these songs ;)

      I't really hard to believe that selena is died but this cd is in her teenage year the cd includes "Te amo Solo A Ti", "Pensando En ti", "Con Esta copa", "Pero Como Te Ha Ido", "Dame Tu Amor", "Dame Un beso", "Soy Amiga", "Yo Te Dare", "Dulce Amor", "Corazoncito" in english from 1 to 10 it means I love you single (te amo solo a ti), thinking about you (pensando en ti), con esta copa (with this glass), pero como te ha ido (but since it has gone to you), Give me a kiss (dame tu amor), give me a kiss (dame un beso), i'm a friend (soy amiga), yo te dare (?), sweet love (dulce amor),little heart (corazoncito).       Selena the Early years cd tells it all. This cd is an example of what artist really is, the songs on this cd were recorded when Selena was very young, by just listening to some of the songs you can admire her beautifull voice. Also the lyrics on the songs are beautifull for example the song "Soy Amiga" , even though this song was recorded on 1985 it can be a hit song today. I'll recommend this cd to everyone , these days it is hard to find artist with a true voice.

      I was lucky to have purchased "Selena: The Early Years Vol.1" directly from the record label, basically the second I was aware of its availability. This album consists of the ORIGINAL versions of songs that were later revamped for tribute compilations, which originally debuted in the 1980's when Selena was in her early teen years.

      Produced and released by Selena's father, and his record label (Q-Zone Records), this is a first-class, long awaited release which will be the first in a 5 volume series.

      The best tracks on this CD are: "Con Esta Copa", about a woman who must drown away a love that ended and can never be again, Selena sings with such emotional passion that it is really hard to imagine a 14 year old behind the mike.

      Selena really shines with her first two hits in her career, which are included in this album: "Dame Un Beso" and "Dulce Amor", two very fun up-beat love songs.

      Other stand-out tracks are the original "Corazoncito", which is a fun dance tune, the fast paced yet smooth to the ear "Pero Como Te Ha Ido" and the great and powerful opening track, "Te Amo Solo A Ti".

      This record was not co-released with EMI Latin, but that does not prevent it from being a very good Selena album. Mr. Quintanilla and his staff have given to the fans a very worthy Selena tribute.

      5 out of 5 stars Gems from Selena's Early Years.......2001-03-02

      This CD contains remixes of ten songs from Selena's teens. Seven of the tracks originally appeared on Selena's 1986 album Alpha. The remaining tracks appeared on early albums released in 1987 and 1988. Four tracks appear on the recent Anthology collection and one appears on Siempre Selena. The remaining five tracks are not otherwise available on CD. These tracks are Pensando En Ti, Con Esta Copa, Pero Como Te Ha Ido, Dame Un Beso and Dulce Amor. All ten tracks are in Spanish and the lyrics are included.

      This is a Tejano album of cumbias and rancheras. It may not appeal to fans of Selena's mature style who prefer her popular and English recordings, but Selena's rich voice dominates throughout. It's hard to believe that she was in her early teens when these tracks were recorded. This collection showcases the early years of one of the greatest voices in popular music. Buy it and enjoy.

      I bought a copy of this CD the day it was released and never tire of listening to its bouncy, yet sensuous rhythms. And no, I'm not just saying that because I was librarian at the school where one of the performers, Bob Medina, was assistant band director!

        Back in my high school days in the 1970s, Led Zeppelin was by far my favorite group. I considered them to be the most talented rock group in the world; 30 years later I still think they were the greatest rock group in existence at the time.

        To hear a dynamic group like Led Zeppelin put to the music of a string quartet may sound like Muzak-ing Led Zeppelin, but the album doesn't come off that way. The string players are both respectful and playful, having fun with the bizarre mixture of Led Zeppelin music and the instrumentation of a string quartet without losing the feel of the originals, presenting an enjoyable performance of the songs, rather than a destroyed one that Muzak-ing would do.

        My favorite two songs on here are "The Ocean" and "Whole Lotta Love"--not necessarily my favorite Led Zeppelin songs in general, but I like the effect here. With this string quartet adaptation of "The Ocean," an almost Middle Eastern sound is revealed in the melody that I'd never noticed before. This is the kind of thing that makes such a project worthwhile--bringing things out of the songs previously unnoticed. "Whole Lotta Love" works much better than I thought it would--the cello line is great! This song is augmented by a distant, fuzzed-up sampling of the song's original vocals, the only song on this album to do that. But it doesn't lose the feel of this "classical" album.

        "Bron-Y-Aur Stomp" also works especially well, although I was never a fan of the song to begin with.

        The other titles are pretty good too. You'd probably appreciate this album more if you knew the original songs, though.

          A few years ago I took a chance on buying this album from Amazon and I've been glad I did ever since. The Emmanuel College Choir is not as well known as some of the other Cambridge choirs but they are on a par with the best of them. This choir has both male and female singers. The sound is pure and the diction is crystal clear. The musical selections are wonderful and include many less familiar songs as well as the old favorites. The choir does a good job in moving from more reverent songs to joyous ones. It's hard to single out any work but "Bethlehem Down" and "The Shepherd's Farewell" are especially beautiful. There are also some very fine solos in some of the songs. If you're wondering if you should buy this album, do yourself a favor and do it!
