Customer Reviews:
Wonderful recording.......2004-11-18
This might be my favorite holiday album. It's one of the first I pull out in November and doesn't get put away until February.
Bright and sparkling!.......2002-11-29
A perfect way to celebrate the Christmas spirit any time of year with some truly "old" favorites, performed with spirit and heart by the Baltimore Consort. Period selections imbued here with the consort's singular sound and creative improvisations include "Ding Dong Merrily on High", "The Old Year Now Away is Fled", "The Cherry Tree Carol", "Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day", "Es ist ein Ros", "In Dulci Jubilo", and many more that may charm you for the first time. The Baltimore Consort is: Mary Anne Ballard, viols and rebec; Mark Cudek, cittern, guitar, viols and bandora; Custer LaRue, soprano soloist; Larry Lipkis, viol, recorder and gemshorn; Ronn McFarlane, lutes; and Chris Norman, wooden flutes and pennywhistle; with Webb Wiggins on organ.
why to get this disc (in rhyme).......2001-11-24
'Twas the day after Thanksgiving, and all through the house, Christmas spirit was stirring and starting to rouse feelings of joy and expectation in the hearts of the people who were there. Beautiful music and Custer LaRue's singing filled the air.
Wonderful songs, written by people long dead, caused pictures to form and stories to dance through each listening head. Stories of a virgin bearing a child, stories of the little Savior's entrance into this world...meek and mild.
Each song is sung with such haunting beauty and care. The Consort's playing could not be more wonderfully fair. Each song is a masterpiece--"The Cherry Tree Carol," "In dulci jubilo," and "Quem pastores laudavere." Each song's focus is on the true meaning of Christmas--no appearance made by St. Nick--but with singing like this, in your head they are sure to stick.
More beautifully than snowflakes this music drifts down. In sheer loveliness, "Christmas Is My Name" deserves the crown. Oh but each tune is strong--like "Ding Dong Merrily" and "The Wren Song." Most come in at under three minutes each, none is overlong. Each is stunning...how can the listener go wrong? How they twinkle...they are most merry. One even makes mention of Cherries.

I highly recommend this disc.
A Christmas Favorite.......2000-12-09
Had enough of animated snowmen and over-sweetened carol arrangements? Here's a hugely enjoyable recording of songs and dances done with flair by the Baltimore Consort. There are a few familiar tunes, such as the lilting arrangement of "Ding, Dong Merrily On High" and a beautiful solo flute version of "Lo, How a Rose 'Er Blooming." But most the songs are off the beaten track, and are therefore fresh and new despite their antiquity. Custer LaRue brings feeling and energy into the songs. This has become the most played Christmas CD in our household.
Excellent performances and unique music.......1999-12-13
This is my favorite Christmas CD, and it is very different from everything else we hear this time of year.

A Perennial Pleasure.......2003-12-09
Over the years we've collected a slew of holiday albums. Some we take out for a single favorite song or a humorous oddity. But this album, "Good People All" is a pleasure to listen to from the first track to the last. Great as background music at a small gathering (though it deserves a more attentive run-through) the album presents both a festive lively air and that ancient wonderful wisdom that comes with winter contemplation. Curl up, watch the snow sparkle, and listen.

Album Description
This classic yuletide recording has become a perennial favorite since it's initial release on red vinyl in 1989. Originally released by Skyclad Records as a 7-inch single, Vibro-phonic has now expanded the release to a 5 song CD EP.
The EP starts off with a brand new remix of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, showcasing heavenly harmonies and droning electric sitars. The song was remixed after the original 2 inch analog tapes were meticulously baked and transferred to digital. The next cut is a 2004 remix of Jesus Of Hollywood, a track that appeared on The Jigsaw Seen's long out-of-print debut album Shortcut Through Clown Alley. A previously unreleased instrumental version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen follows, featuring guest percussionist Joe Berardi on vibes. Next up is the acoustic single version of Jesus Of Hollywood, remixed especially for this release. The final selection is the original single mix of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen.
With a mint condition copy of the original single and picture sleeve valued at over $20 (Goldmine Christmas Record Price Guide, Krause Publications, 1997), this expanded, remixed and remastered version of God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen makes the perfect stocking stuffer.

Customer Reviews:
A terrific concert.......2006-12-10
My friends and I just saw Sandi perform this concert last night in Champaign, Illinois. She was awesome! The last time I saw her was about 25 years ago, and I was concerned that her voice might not be what it used to be. I shouldn't have worried, because her voice is better than ever. She was so charming and witty and fun; the audience was captivated from the very first note. This album is wonderful and warm and sincere, just like Sandi.
OOPS!.......2005-12-18
How disappointing to find out that this album is a re-recording of so many of her Christmas classics. I love them all...but I was expecting a totally new Christmas album from my favorite Christian vocalist (I've been a fan for over 20 years and I always have a CD of hers in a player someplace in the house or car!) I agree with another review...the absence of an orchestra leaves so much to be desired. I also agree that the album should have been promoted and sold as a 'best of'.
If you want THE very best Christmas album then purchase Sandi's 1990's "O Holy Night." (on this album, her performance of 'O Holy Night' is just out of this world!)
Sandi, there's so much Christmas material out there...and your last Christmas album, O Holy Night, is just magnificent...why, why did you do it???
What you've been looking for from Sandi Patty.......2005-12-08
Sandi Patty swings into top form with her sixth holiday project, Yuletide Joy. And while this album doesn't strive for the timeless perfection of 1983's The Gift Goes On, resplendent vocals and lively arrangements nonetheless make Yuletide Joy one of Patty's finest. While The Gift Goes On is an experience in the wonder of the holiday season, this album is as an experience in its joys.
Several reviewers have already covered the preponderance of remakes here. They demonstrate how Patty's voice has matured from the tightly controlled, every-phoneme-perfect delivery early in her career into a powerhouse of expression and persona today. While comparisons are inevitable, taken on their own merits, these songs are strong efforts. Collectively, they reveal the genuine Sandi Patty.
The album has an intimate feel that stems both from both Patty's evolving vocal style and complimentary arrangements. In some of Patty's albums, producers tended to overload the orchestration at times, leaving the vocals sounding shoehorned. In an inspired move, Patty's long-time concert music director serves as Yuletide Joy's producer and arranger. Those years in concert halls obviously provided insight into what has contributed to Patty's staying power: the voice. His spirited, though minimal arrangements support the vocals rather than competing with them.
And the vocals do shine, especially on the new material. Patty cuts loose with the entire range of octaves and musical genres, often within the same song. Not many singers could craft a feeling of meditative worship as in "Worthy is the Lamb," transition to a spine-tingling "Hallelujah Chorus" and end the same song in blistering gospel-soul mode. The same is true for the unlikely "Jingle Bells," which spans the globe in its lighthearted smorgasbord of musical styles. "Jesus, What a Wonderful Child" ranks as one of Patty's most relaxed and joyful worship songs with a rollercoaster of an ending that's not to be missed.
Sandi Patty has never sounded more vital. Whether you've never heard of her before, or if you've been away a while, Yuletide Joy is a prime opportunity to discover-or rediscover-this legendary vocalist.
A rehash of earlier albums.......2005-11-15
This was a disappointment. Many of the songs have been recorded on previous Sandi Patty albums, but "Yuletide Joy" is not publicized as such. Unfortunately none of the new arrangements better the original ones. "O Holy Night" from the 1995 "O Holy Night!" and 1992 Hallmark Presents albums is a much better arrangement (thanks to David Clydesdale). Ditto for "Worship the King", "O Magnify the Lord", and "Bethlehem Morning" which all appear on "The Gift Goes On" album to better effect. "Merry Christmas With Love" is the identical recording from "The Gift Goes On". "Home for the Holidays/I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Star of Bethlehem" are better recorded with a real orchestra on the "O Holy Night!" album.
What might be most disappointing is that synthesizers are substituted for a live orchestra (which Sandi has always used) and makes the production sound low-budget. Sandi still has a glorious voice as always, but the production and arrangements don't match up.
I had hoped for a unique and fresh album, considering all the resources and talent that surround her. Buy "The Gift Goes On" and "O Holy Night!" albums instead. Those will become perennial favorites.
Christmas Best Of - Sort Of.......2005-11-01
Over the last sixteen years, Sandi Patty is an artist I have come to associate with Christmas music, mainly because of her great CD THE GIFT GOES ON. Naturally, when I found out she had another Christmas CD coming out, I had to get it. It's wonderful. I just wish I had been a little more patient.
In a move I don't think I've seen before, she decided to release a best of from previous Christmas projects. However, instead of just doing a best of, she has chosen to rerecord the songs. This gives us the praise song "Worship the King" with a new intro of "A Christmas Carol," for example.
The advantage of this is that many of these songs are absolutely wonderful. "Bethlehem Morning" is one of my favorite Christmas songs because of the way it ties the birth of Christ through His triumphant second return. This new version doesn't disappoint.
No Sandi best of would be complete without a version of "O Holy Night." While my favorite is still the one from her first Christmas CD, this one is very good.
Also getting covered are "Home for the Holidays/I'll be Home for Christmas" and "Star of Bethlehem" from her second CD and "O Magnify the Lord" from her first, this time combined with "Angles We Have Heard on High."
Surprisingly, she chose not to rerecord "Merry Christmas with Love." This is the original recording from her first Christmas CD. It does sound a tad out of place, but it does still sound good. She follows it up with a new recording of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," and she makes one change to the lyrics which I really like - she changes "if the fates allow" to "if the Lord allows." I've only ever heard Twila Paris do this, but I like it.
There are new songs on here as well. "Jingle Bells Ala Sandra" is a version you have never heard before, I guarantee it. Starting out pretty traditionally, she soon goes to a jazzy version, German opera, and then finally Mexican fiesta. It's fun, but doesn't hold up well to repeated listens.
I had not heard "Someday" before. It's a beautiful ballad imagining the lullaby that Mary might have sung to Jesus that first Christmas night. I especially like the way in incorporates a vision of His future ministry into the song.
Even though she has chosen to rerecord these songs, she has still stuck with the inspirational sound that made her popular in the first place. While a few songs do tend to end with the operatic high notes she's employing recently, it's not as annoying as on some of her recent CD's.
If you have missed out on some of Sandi's past Christmas CD's, this will be a great addition to your collection. Even if you already have all of her others, this CD won't disappoint. You'll just probably want to wait until after Christmas sales to buy it.

Best-known for his unashamedly romantic cycle of seven symphonies, Nebraska-born Howard Hanson (1896-1981) was a formidable pianist in his youth (he seriously considered a career as a concert virtuoso). All but two items here predate Hanson's three-year residency in Rome (where he studied under Respighi after winning the prestigious Prix de Rome in 1921). In the three Poèmes erotiques of 1917-18 (a fourth was lost), the ambitious Sonata in A minor (1918), and the Three Miniatures (1918-19), extravagant virtuosity goes hand-in-hand with a heart-on-sleeve emotional fervor. Both the Three Etudes (1920) and Two Yuletide Pieces (1919) are cleaner-cut; indeed, the latter diptych has all the potential for popular appeal. Other stand-out items include the winsome miniature Enchantment (1935), as well as Hanson's effective 1970 piano transcription of his own 1962 orchestral suite, For the First Time. Thomas Labé is a passionate, occasionally strident advocate of this rare repertoire. An enterprising anthology with excellent booklet notes and a decent recording, to boot--well worth snapping up at Naxos's absurdly low price. --Andrew Achenbach
Customer Reviews:
Hanson could definitely write for the piano!.......2001-11-28
Howard Hanson was a romantic, no bars about it. And for the time he lived and composed in, was anachronistic. His piano music was a surprise and delight from the first time I put it in the player. Long flowing lines, beautiful figured melodies. The sound of Labe's playing is full and lush, perfectly fitted to Hanson's simple yet beautiful development of melodic ideas. If you like the Howard Hanson symphonies, you should dig his piano music. It is the genesis of his later work. This is good stuff from one of our greatest composers.
A "must buy" at any price..........2001-03-17
...Howard Hanson's piano music is chock-full of romantic melodies, yet there is a very contemporary feel that permeates the basic structure of the music. There isn't a bad cut in the bunch, but I'm particularly partial to the Sonata in A Minor, which is aclassic-in-waiting, needing only broader exposure for its proper recognition. The Poemes Erotiques each fetchingly convey their name demotions: peace, joy and desire. The Three Etudes and Three Miniatures are full of feeling and emotion, and For the First Time, originally scored for orchestra, sounds (to me, anyway) even morenatural in this piano setting. Much, much credit must go to Thomas Labe, who not only plays this music with passionate intensity and virtuosity, but who also completed the Sonata, based on Hanson's own hand-written, but incomplete score. His understanding and love of this music is apparent through out the CD. The sound quality is top notch as well. Out of my nearly 100 classical CD's, this one jumped to my top echelon very quickly and has stayed there. Go get it - this is great piano music, at a great price.
Hanson's Piano Music receives a Well-Deserved Recital.......2001-01-19
Thmas Labé is eminently qualified to bring Howard Hanson's works for piano into the current repertoire. He has embraced this task with the authority of a musicologist as well as the enthusiasm of one who enjoys the lush sounds of the piano. As a result we have a refreshing experience of hearing little-known works that deserve more public performances.
Labé is well-known for viruoso playing, beginning with his recording of "The Virtuoso Johann Strauss" in 1992 on the Dorian label. However, with this album and fresh material, he comes of age both as a performer capable of an enormous range of color and an original interpreter of American keyboard literature.

Il est ne!.......2004-12-14
If you liked the first 2 albums in the "New England Christmastide" series, then you'll want to get this album. It is the third entry by the New England Christmastide Musicians, a collaboration of gifted artists from (where else?) the New England area, who got together and recorded these wonderful albums in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Using a variety of folk instruments such as the flute, banjo, and harmonica, they perform many well-known Christmas carols and even a few obscure folk ones. My favorite one on this album is "Oh Holy Night" with its haunting banjo chords and soothing flute melody. "New England Yuletide" may have taken 16 years to arrive after its predecessor ("New England Christmastide 2" in 1987), but it was well worth the wait. Yule love this album!
