4 out of 5 stars Salve Jorge!.......2006-06-09

Samba, funk and soul together with spiritual side of Jorge... This is another powerfull example of how great Ben Jor is.

5 out of 5 stars KA-BOOM.......2004-03-16

This deserves a spot on any soul/funk fan's shelf. I had Umbagarrauma on a complilation CD and wanted to hear more. I am familiar with other Brazilian styles and the unrelated Rock en Espanol styles but this one is the king. You can party to it, work out, or just groove to this man's genius in your car. I went through the Starbuck's drive through and the kid said,"who is that." Who says the best funk n soul comes out of America? Buy it you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Jorge Ben's sleek vocals and wah-wah funky style.......2004-01-01

Jorge Ben's sleek vocals and wah-wah funk style applied to samba, latin rhythms and afro-percussion are summary contained in this great album. I, a brazilian fan of black music, do believe in a 'world black music' whose universal conscious jazz also stated long ago, so that now is cheerfully expressed in multicolored palletes of percussions and blues. Jorge Ben also felt the groove as well as Curtis Mayfield did in USA: as Mayfield went through a protestant education, what means 'soul music' in his veins (like Marvin Gaye for example), nevertheless Ben's style is more softly, catholic as old samba can be but wicked as it can be too.

5 out of 5 stars ILoveJorge.......2003-05-06

Musically gorgeous and unique, great rhythm, Jorge's voice is amazing, the album has a lot of musical depth, is uplifting, tropical. It's an amazing work of his!

5 out of 5 stars Bumpin' Brazil.......2003-04-12

...So I throw this thing in my CD player for the first time and instantly I say to myself "I have NO idea what this guy is saying--but Damn! is this funky."

From the ridiculous, syncopated funk of "Ponta de la Africano (Ummbabarumba)" right into the bubbling bassline intro to track #2 "Hermes..." this things from Brazil straight cooks, man.

I'm not exactly a stranger to Brazilian soul music. But if you are, this is a sweet starting point. Best way to sum it up is a cross-pollination of latin smoke, jb funk, island rhythms and African stylings.

The funk flew outta of Brazil in the 70's so if you ain't hip and you're not sure, start with this Jorge Ben album and keep diggin...

2 out of 5 stars A lot of 70's Music.......2005-09-20

If you really like 70's themes, you should like this CD. It was a little too dated for me.

5 out of 5 stars Bond and beyond on an excellent career retrospective........1998-08-25

Imitation is often considered the greatest form of flattery. John Barry's oeuvre has been sampled by dozens of contemporary musical artists, and he is often credited as being the godfather of "trip hop" (check recent albums by Portishead and Mono to hear the Barry influence). The Academy-award winning composer has been producing music for over forty years, but this collection focuses on the artist's most commercially successful period, the 1960's. The instantly recognizable and inimitable Barry style is well documented throughout 23 varied compositions. Selections range from classic to obscure, and include all the title tracks from the early James Bond soundtracks. Barry's film and television music is the defining sound of that era - lush orchestrations, cool jazzy riffs, pure excitement. "Themeology" is an excellent starting point for the novice collector and equally attractive for the long-time admirer.

5 out of 5 stars Khaled is a musical genius.......2005-12-21

If you've never experienced Khaled, don't miss out. He is an extraordinary talent, blending musical styles native to his Algeria with hip-hop, funk and other genres. The variety on each album is also fantastic. His album Sahra may be his most accessible to Western ears, but this album as well as numerous others are well worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, romantic music!.......2005-06-25

When I bought "Ya-Rayi," I wasn't sure I would like it, but hey! It was a "Khaled" CD. I was introduced to Cheb Khaled in the late 80's. That being the case, I was concerned that this recording would sound too western and loungey, like something you'd hear in a Las Vegas show. Well, it is palatable to the western ear, but more than that, it's got amazing draw. The young Khaled's early roots are still evident in many of the tracks, but in a different, more polished presentation that I believe most will appreciate. My favorite songs are "Ya Galbi" and "Hagda." I find myself listening to "Hagda" and then replaying it- over and over. That song is so passionate - it brings chills to my spine. And I love the accordion and the Egyptian strings featured in many of the tracks. The only downside - I wish the lyrics printed in Arabic on the CD insert were also translated in English. Bottom line: This is a CD you'll want to own. You will cherish it as one of Khaled's best.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of the year.......2005-02-25

This album is simply beautiful, and stylistically is all over the map. It opens with the cabaret-esque "Mani Hani" and from there each track seems to get better and better. My favorites include the unstoppable dance floor cut "Yema Yema" and the album's true highlight, the masterpiece that is "H'Mama," which starts as a traditional Middle Eastern piece and ends as a driving, relentless multi-layered extravaganza. Bravo, Cheb Khaled! Thanks for the remix of "El-H'mam," which is included in some versions of the album.

5 out of 5 stars A rousing, exuberant expression of passion..........2004-11-16

This is from the Observer Magazine review: In the past two years, each of the major world artists of the 1980s has chosen to turn around and look backwards, to make semi-acoustic, reflective albums in celebration of the music of their formative years. Salif Keita led the way with his wonderful Moffou in 2002, and already this year we've had milestone albums from the Gipsy Kings ( Roots ) and Youssou N'Dour ( Egypt ), with Mory Kante's Sabou due in September.
Ya-Rayi, the latest album by Algerian maestro Khaled, does not immediately sound as if it belongs alongside them. The accompaniment is mostly loud and upfront, Khaled's exultant roar is undiminished, and on the surface sounds similar to his four million-selling albums since his international breakthrough in 1992. But in several respects Ya-Rayi is a return to the singer's early inspirations.
Born in Oran in Algeria in 1960, Khaled burst into popularity as a teenager in the late 1970s, when his cassettes were street-market bestsellers throughout the north African diaspora. As well as being a unique singer, Khaled was also a superb accordion player, and accordion is featured on several tracks here, sometimes played by Khaled himself, more often by co-producer Philip Eidel.
Khaled gave one of the best live concerts I ever attended, in 1994. It was the first and still the only time I have witnessed the entire audience at the Royal Festival Hall leap to its feet the moment the singer walked on stage, and keep dancing until he left it. As Khaled filled that big room with his voice, I was sure there could not be a better singer anywhere. He had everything: a rich, thick tone, infinite vocal flexibility and that indefinable, heartbreaking quality which no words can convey. He can hold a note for ever, or leap from one to another, his voice flying across the beats like an acrobat.

There are perils in having such a good voice, that so often trap pop singers like Mary J Blige and Mariah Carey, who convince themselves they do not need inherently good songs but can disguise half-baked ideas in pyrotechnics. Without understanding the literal meaning of Khaled's songs, we can hear that he always starts with meaning, melody and structure. On this album, most of the songs are credited to his wife, Sam Debbie, but they have the same virtues as those written by Khaled himself in the past.
French co-producer Eidel started collaborating with Khaled in 1992, and the two seem to draw the best out of each other, and Eidel's broad brushstroke arrangements fill the canvasses with drama or subtlety as the occasion demands. This is a rare album in which each track feels like the best so far until it is replaced by the next.
The mood shifts from elegiac to intense, Khaled swoops from a shout to a sigh, the accompaniment is a fiery horn section one moment, a swirling string section the next. The first song, 'Mani Hani', starts with piano. Not an electronic keyboard, but real piano - fluent, easy going, like the musician has all the time in the world. A hint of classical, a touch of jazz. Checking the credits, the player is Jewish pianist Maurice El Medioni, famous in Algeria before Khaled was born. One-by-one, acoustic guitar, percussion and accordion fill out the sound, and 90 seconds have passed before the voice enters, softer and more gentle than we are used to hearing it. It's a brave way to start, and gives fair warning that we should expect the unexpected.
The album's title track 'Ya-Rayi', is co-produced by Don Was, the American who produced the international hit single 'Didi' on Khaled's self-titled album in 1992. 'Ya-Rayi' is much less intense than 'Didi' was, offering Khaled the luxury of stretching out on a double-bed of voices and horns. Meanwhile, 'Zine Zina' marks the first time Khaled has worked with Jacob Desvarieux, one-time leader of the zouk group, Kassav, and it's fascinating to hear Khaled's typical phrasing work so well with the Antilles-tinged horns and backing vocalists. This irresistible call-to-dance is surely going to blast out in nightclubs throughout the world for the next year or so.
Khaled's first studio album since 1999 is a rousing, exuberant expression of passion by one of the great singers in the world today, at the height of his powers.

5 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece!.......2004-10-15

Khaled, once again, has managed to maintain his ownership of the throne of Rai. I, like many others, have wondered what happened to khaled. It's been a while since I've heard from him. I thought that his last "1, 2, 3 Solies" concert would be his last best. But I guess that it was worth the wait. Khaled, as usual, is very innovative and is able to introduce a certain theme in every album he records. On this latest album, the theme is back-to-roots. Unlike many of his other albums where he included many modern and western music themes ranging from Jazz, Reggae, and Pop, Khaled this time is introducing a modern-classic Arabic-Rai music. He puts more Egyptian strings emphasis on many of the tracks (like El Ghira, Ya Galbi, El Hamam, Ensa El Ham) to offer a feeling of the his early music. However, in couple of tracks (like Lemen, Ya-Rayi), he offers the listener a great picture of the early days of how rai was transitioning to more modernized music. Also, Khaled's lyrics are more meaningful and understood in this album. He's using more common Algerian Arabic dialect than Algerian slang. I think it's due to the fact that most of them were written with a big support from his wife this time.

While many people believe that Khaled's best asset is his voice, but I would like to add that there are only few singers out there that can convey emotions and passions in their voice like him. When you hear Khaled's voice blending perfectly with his unique music, special mystic feelings overcome you. Only a few artists like Khaled have the ability to touch you with their singing. In other words, it's not only Khaled's voice that haunts the listener, but also his ability to convey a genuine message of love, sadness, happiness, or neutrality. He could sing with Chinese music and you would still be impressed by his ability to blend genuinely with that music and produce an outstanding song. This guy was simply born to sing!

I think that this is one of Khaled's best albums. It's a one album that you must own and I'm sure that you'll love it like I did. Believe it or not, I had to order this album from the UK because I could not wait for it to be available in the USA. If you get the special edition, the DVD may help you to know more about Khaled's background and how he made his latest album. It has video clips for Aicha, Didi, and Abdel Kader live.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best African musician.......2006-10-04

Lokua Kanza has one of the most exceptional voices of Africa. It is smooth, melancholichas and it has a clarity that rings out, calls you from what you're doing and begs you to chill and relax. Lokua Kanza is a musician of multiple talents, a singer, composer or arranger as required. As for his undeniable artistic feeling, it has attracted artists from many different horizons, from Youssou N'Dour to Patrick Bruel. Lokua has brilliantly ensured the renewal of African music, this genius artist delivers music beyond the usual ndombolo sound, and he does it with a lot of class, creativity and simplicity!

Plus Vivant is an album of guitar introspections ("Si Tu Pars"); some done in an R&B style ("Le monde est fou"), some haunting acoustic ballads ("Mal a dire"), and some upbeat tracks, which point towards the african style without being overpowering. There's some beautiful piano, some exceptional guitar solos and it's all very pleasant.

For those who like discovering new music genres, I strictly recommend this album to you. Lokua Kanza is the best African musician and my personal favorite. Trust me you will go back and buy all his previous works (especially Toyebi Te!). Bravo Lokua, we're proud of you!!!

If you haven't heard semba and other rhythms from Angola, you haven't lived. Paulo Flores is one of its best artists. His slightly raspy soulful voice complements the melodic percussive laden tracks on this cd. There's a few mournful ballads but that makes the heat on the other tracks even hotter. You'll hear Brasilian samba in here too. The label's Brasilian and I believe that semba has some affinity to samba. Most of all you'll hear a strong voice of African music at its best. He has quite a back catalog that's hard to find but worth the search. This is his first studio album available on Amazon. It would be a fine thing for the music world if they could locate and sell his back catalog. A true original from the source. Buy it and turn it up!

3 out of 5 stars House and drum n bass with light ethnic accents........2004-08-31

If it's House and drum n bass you seek with light ethnic accents and overtones underneath, Keita's REMIXES FROM MOFFOU is the item of choice: his basic traditional sound has here been transformed for the modern dance audience who needs the bass heavy and the African light.

    4 out of 5 stars More Videos.......2005-09-17

This single should be an example for all other singles, I was looking for the seether song "Broken" for a long time and finally I heard that a single was coming out. this CD also comes with a high quality video of the song (BIG BONUS), there are some other seether songs included on this CD but if you want more seether songs you may as well buy an album.

4 out of 5 stars Amy's chunks sound good but the original..........2005-07-21

I must admit, YES, I absolutely LOVE the duet. But seriously, I like the original with just THe dude...uhm...oh god what's his name again? Shawn I think. Probably spelt wrong but oh well. >. < But yeah The one with just him singing it is amazing as well. <3 And don't think I'm just a "Only Seether" Fan, either. I was introduced to Seether and the incredible music they make through the duet. ::Sigh:: If you think they suck, go listen to the songs: "Love Her" "Fine Again" "Needles" "69 Tea" And just yeah. In that order, too. XD Wow this got long, and i'm simply ranting so i'm off. Toodles (I probably won't be back, so try not to reply . XD)

5 out of 5 stars Sooo cool, now rock bands are talking.......2005-07-01

Hi, I heard this song on-line (...) and I had to listen to it at least 7 times! I then heard it on the radio and I jumped, that one girl who said something about how Amy and Seather got together, well, it's true! Ok, you're thinking I'm just a kid, no one should listen to me, well, now it's time to!
This is the best song Amy did with someone else, she did do a song with Big Dismal called Missing You, that song is good, but this song is WAY better.
When Evanescence first came out, I got the album, Anyway, I love this song, and whoever said that us kids are sick that we think that stuff like this is awesome is lame, well, back off!
At least we have good taste in music, unlike you, who obviously
likes stupid pop stars. So stop making us think that pop stars are cool, when they are NOT! Keep thoughts like that to yourself.
Sorry, I just felt like doing that. Anyway, I love this song more and more every day.
Important - Amy Lee and Evanescence fans - the new Evanescence album will be out aroud the 5th of November, I know alot of stuff, so if anyone has questions, remember, (..), and I have lots of news, so write a review on any Evanescence thing, and you can ask a question, I'll give you the answer. Thank you, please, stop letting adults make things lame for us kids, 'cause then nothing is fun, I'm not saying that every review you write has to say happy happy joy joy, just don't make things make our day and other adults feel sad, or make our day feel as crappy as much as you can.

5 out of 5 stars Each to their own..........2005-06-09

I personally love the song Broken, and Amy Lee. I haven't listend to any other 'Seether' stuff, but yeah nonetheless. I used to think all rock/rap... everything but country... was crap, but the more I listen nowadays the more i realise Country is the crap- cause it's all about the same stuff, over and over again, recycled into different words and melodies. At least the rock/alt has some sort of feeling in it anymore. I can relate to alot more.

Broken is one of those that I can relate to- I just love it, plus her voice. And dude, the first guy who reviewed this- like the one kid said, get a life. These people actually worked to get on the charts- I'll bet you watch American Idol and think those people have talent.

1 out of 5 stars terribly overated and recycled crap.......2005-05-19

I can't believe people(mostly kids) think this garbage is "great", these idiots are blatant rip offs of Nirvana, hell even one song i heard by this "band" sounded just like, with one tiny little difference, Nirvana's "Come as You Are", and that sad poor excuse for "rock"song or "nu-metal"song,whatever crappy ass label MTV wants to give them, called "fine again" or something like that was so freakin weak and patheticly boring, no real climax in the song what so ever, i mean damn it just goes to show you don't need much "talent" to make it in the music BUSINESS nowadays
